Hello! Apologies for sending an ask out of the blue but considering your familiarity with localisation differences in persona 4/golden, I was wondering if anything comes to your mind regarding this aspect and how the game depicts queerness and queer themes? Thank you!

Heya! Don't worry, I was thinking people would probably ask stuff like this. After all, I already replied to somebody's tags asking this same thing previously, but I know not many people saw that, so let me use the chance to go into more detail:

Unfortunately, Persona 4's treatment of queer themes is not a result of the translation. The only things that were down to translation choices were small things, such as which pronouns are used in which situation (because Japanese does not at all have the same concept of third person pronouns as English, and the way first person classifiers that mean "I" work is very complex and a lot more vibes-based than actually tied to gender.)

But for the most part, everything is pretty much the same. Kanji's reaction to Chie mumbling about something being "off" about how he interacted with Naoto that first time, the tent scene, Yosuke's extreme insecurity in his own sexuality in addition to everyone else's... I think maybe the only thing that's a biiit better in Japanese is that Teddie is kiiinda genderfluid in Japanese, with the artbook outright stating that he doesn't necessarily consider himself "male" when he's in his bear form, unless it's necessary for a joke.

A lot of this can be traced to the really odd relationship the game's director, Katsura Hashino, has to queer themes. In interviews about Catherine Fullbody (a game which infamously has a rather weirdly handled gay romance route which, however, is notably also the only romance route in the game that cannot possibly result in a bad ending), he talks about how he's always admired queer people for being "strong" and wanted to write queer stories, but couldn't really do it until Fullbody because Atlus higher ups were afraid of backlash from the fans.

Traces of this are actually seen in Persona 4 Vanilla's data, where remnants of a surprisingly well done romance route for YOSUKE, of all people, are still present. That route made it far enough into development to have voiced lines in both, English and Japanese. However, it was dummied out in the final game and its script content was removed. Yosuke STILL has the "girlfriend flag" in the code that all the female romance options also have, but in the finished game it only checks whether you can hug him during his social link or not. Everything else was dummied out. You can still find the voice files on the cutting room floor if you want:

And yes, the "I like you" line is unambiguously romantic in Japanese. His wording is very hard to misinterpret.

However, in the finished game and the rest of the franchise Yosuke's bisexuality was reduced to an in-joke of the developers. It's most poignant in Persona Q (the first one), where if you get the "marriage" scene with Yosuke in the second dungeon, his reactions differ WILDLY depending on which Protagonist you are playing as, far more than other male characters. With Makoto Yuki he acts nonchallant and deadpan about it. With Yu Narukami he acts like a blushy Tsundere and panics constantly. So, yeah.

Okay, so, if the director had interest in writing queer stories since before Persona 4, why is Persona 4 the way it is then?

Well, because - and there's no way around it - he sucks at it.

Katsura Hashino has to be one of the clumsiest "gay activists" I've ever seen in my whole darn life. He finds queer people "cool", but seemingly never had any queer writers or sensitivity readers on his teams and it's caused enormous blunders in how these themes have been handled. For example, when after Persona 3 it was pointed out to him that the writing of the female characters in interaction with the male characters was bad, he immediately hired more female writers and gave them free reign for how to handle the female characters from then on out. But apparently the same thing never happened with his mishandling of queer themes. He wants Catherine's Erica and Rin to be empowering figures for trans women and gay men, but makes a lot of blunders in how he has other characters interact with them to the point it buries his good intentions. Erica's boyfriend having gay panic upon realizing she's trans is treated as "funny and cute", even by Erica herself. Rin technically being a monogender alien really undermines his story of becoming more secure in his sexuality. It goes on and on like that.

The intention with Naoto's story was to point out the extreme sexism in Japanese society and how it forces female nerds to find alternate modes of self-expression, but the clumsy choice of including surgery themes in Naoto's dungeon completely buried that for especially western queer audiences. Most people don't even remember Naoto's dungeon was outright modeled after a Kamen Rider villain hideout. They completely shot themselves in the foot with this one. Additionally, the way Naoto is handled AFTER the dungeon makes her (I'm using that pronoun because she calls herself a "woman" in Japanese in the game) seem more like someone who's on the verge of discovering they are X-gender (the japanese word for "nonbinary") than a repressed girl. Like, right down to how she has Rise help her experiment with clothes in the canonical drama CDs only to realize she really is uncomfortable with skirts and go for an androgynous but less restrictive look going forward. The way she dresses in the Golden epilogue and P4D is pretty X-gender core if you ask me. If they had leaned into that they could have genuinely have had something AMAZING, while also presenting the themes of sexism they wanted to explore, but the lack of queer sensitivity readers kind of ruined it.

Same for Kanji. The way they write him makes it seem like he's bisexual or pansexual, rather than straight, but they kinda shove that part of him aside after his dungeon is done, leaving his actual orientation up in the air and wasting a really good chance for representation. NOW, given what happened to Yosuke's social link, it's quite possible the original intent WAS to explore this more and it got cut, but as it stands, we'll never know. The huge problem of the internalized toxic stereotypes his Shadow presented never being reflected on and put into their right context in the rest of the game, when his social link could've given a great opportunity for that is also a huge shame.

All of this happened because of Atlus being unwilling to let their writers go all out with queer themes in fears of alienating a cishet audience AND because Hashino never sat his writing team down with any actual queer writers to sort this shit out and learn how to get across what the team was ACTUALLY trying to say. Now, given, Persona 4 was far from the only Japanese media property with that exact issue at the time, but it hurts especially much in its case because of the game's themes of exploring the truth to its logical conclusion, as well as psychology. These are issues that a remake REALLY would do well to address and correct. I feel like they actually will HAVE to do that, because sensitivity readers have become the NORM in handling these themes now in Japanese media, rather than the exception. You can thank trail blazing mainstream works like Zombie Land Saga for that.

All in all, Persona 4's handling of queer themes is an exercise in frustration that I hope is corrected soon.

“Fuuuck.”

The only word running through Todoroki’s mind. They were either prolonged or short under his breath. His breath was labored, spending prior moments working out in his room, the dumbbell still within his hard grasp.

His forehead coated in thin sheets of sweat as beads fell from his damp hair. He snatched the nearby towel, roughly running the cloth on his sensitive skin while attempting to calm his rising pulse.

“Fuck” He muttered again.

The time read 7:12 PM, already behind his routine. He’d spent the day as normal, but something about recent events had his presence somewhere else.

Throwing the towel somewhere, he grabbed his phone. Inputting his passcode before clicking straight into his messages.

The screen’s light illuminated his sharp features, his lips cracking into a smirk as he scrolled up into the message feed dating back from last week.

Damn. You just had to prance around his mind, huh?

Who knew getting dragged into his gang’s matchmaking rendezvous would lead him to now? He still remembered standing broody whilst everyone else chatted and danced around, light strobing and flashing in his eyes making him want to escape.

In his silent ruminations, he was late to notice another suffering individual at his side, a little too uncomfortable in their skin. You were definitely in the same boat as him.

And the rest was history.

Because you lived on the other side of town (and went to an actual school), you both opted to text for weeks, promising to jump at any free time you guys had.

It was better than nothing, he thought.

Amid his floating, fluffy daydreams, a notification slid down from above the screen with a ding. His chest palpated when he read who the delivered message was from.

Hey, I’m heading downtown. Can’t sleep and I wanted to take a break from home :>

He bit inside his lip. Todoroki clicked on the message, sending him down to the very bottom of your chat room. His fingers hovered and deleted message after message, word after word. The chat bubbles danced for a while until he unintentionally pressed send.

He lurched forward with wide eyes, reading his sent message.

Sure, I’ll go shower rn

“Fuck!-- Nice going, Yosuke.” He breathed out, pinching the bridge of his nose as he dragged it down.

Another ring came from his phone, feeling his dread quickly pushed away as his throat banged as if he could choke his heart at any moment.

He peeked over the screen.

Haha, okay ^^ see u [NAME sent a location]

Seeing your lighthearted message, Todoroki released a breath he didn’t know he held. Crisis averted. Would you even mind? Did you get in the same situation as him some time ago? He kinda hoped so…

Brushing the embarrassment off, he got up and made his way to his shower, hoping to clear his muddled mind.

After dressing up nicely, Todoroki walked down the cool and uncharacteristically quiet streets downtown.

It only occurred to Todoroki that this would be your first time hanging out in person since the party. Hard to believe, sure, but with your schedules and his intent on never breathing a word about you to his gang, that insignificant time frame of one month suddenly became precious moments he’d never trade.

Todoroki shook his head, sighing as he curved the corner, hands stuffed in his leather pockets. He shouldn’t jump to conclusions. You were technically still acquaintances… Unless sending memes and funny cat videos were a sign of your affection— it was still too soon to call any shots unless this date– hang-out went well.

What were you planning? You mentioned something about cafe dates being a go-to, but would cafes even allow caffeine during this time? What do they sell in cafes other than caffeine? Is there anything you’d like?

“Over here!”

Todoroki raised his head and followed the voice, straight to you. Standing underneath the streetlight, you waved toward him. The fluorescent warmth made your features shine in the treacherous sea of strangers.

You didn’t look tired, or was that just the grin on your face? Todoroki couldn’t tell. He felt like he could drop all his worries now. You were there. Mere feet away.

Fuck… he was in deep. And as his body practically gravitated towards yours, Todoroki knew he wasn’t escaping from your fingers any time soon.

But, he’s honest with himself. He wouldn’t have it any other way.

Buddy Daddies Animedia February 2023 magazine article

No target they set their sights on ever gets away! Through a curious series of events, two assassin buddies find themselves taking in a 4-year-old girl. Kazuki is a softhearted caretaker, and Rei's "on" and "off" modes are like night and day. They live together and look after the innocent 4-year-old Miri; it's a rough ride, but it'll all work out somehow... or will it?

The original anime Buddy Daddies, a collaboration between P.A. Works and Nitroplus, has finally begun. In this series, you can enjoy the action scenes of the assassin duo dealing with their work, and the domestic comedy of the new fathers and the bubbly Miri. Kazuki and Rei are brimming with charm, both in their facades and their hidden depths; they're sure to get you right in the heart! This issue, we bring you an interview with Aniplex producer Toba Yosuke, with some hints about how to recover our hearts from this duo.

Kurusu Kazuki (VA: Toyonaga Toshiyuki)

A yang-type man with caretaker instincts

An assassin. Has strong communication skills, and is mostly in charge of gathering intel and setting up the plan for execution. Lives with Rei, and looks after his daily needs.

The irresistible smile of a charmer?!

The lovely thing about Kazuki: He just can't leave a human disaster alone! He's a very family-oriented maternal type

Toba: "Kazuki is very family-oriented; he's the so-called maternal type. The reason why he started living together with Rei is that he saw the complete shambles of Rei's lifestyle, went, 'This won't do!' and started fussing over him. He's a great cook, and good at cleaning and laundry too, and on top of that, he just can't rest unless he gets it all done right. He also tends to be a bit of a busybody. Though all of that goes away when he's on the job…"

Personal Data: Kurusu Kazuki

Age: 28 years old

Occupation: Assassin

Special Skills: Interpersonal communication. Good at cooking and cleaning too!

A taciturn man of contrasts

An assassin. A man of few words and fewer expressions. The elite assassin training he received has endowed him with outstanding physical ability, and he's at the top of the field in combat and marksmanship.

Behaves like two completely different people on the job and off it?!

His keen gaze lands a one-hit KO on the target ⭐

The lovely thing about Rei: The swoon-worthy, stark contrast between his ON (assassin) and OFF (personal) modes?

Toba: "Rei... when Rei is on the job, he's a cool assassin who coldly gets the mission done without a flicker of expression. But outside of work, he's a guy who just doesn't want to do anything, so he does absolutely nothing at home. (laughs) When he's out and about, he dresses in a sharp suit and has his hair swept up, but as soon as he gets home, he sits around in baggy loungewear and unkempt hair, and just spends all his time playing games. I think that on/off contrast makes for quite an adorable gap."

Age: 25 years old

Occupation: Assassin

Special Skills: Absolutely top-notch shooting!

Weaknesses: Housework. Just totally hopeless...

A truly broad heart is needed to fully embrace Rei and his total lack of life skills...?

Rei carries out his assassin work flawlessly, and is a dead loss when it comes to regular life. He tends to be overly indifferent to himself and others, so you may need to be very tolerant in gently accepting him and offering your patient support...

Unasaka Miri (VA: Kino Hina)

A little girl living with Kazuki and Rei

An affectionate, innocent young girl, who gets caught up in a gunfight while searching for her father. She is rescued by Kazuki, and so they begin living together.

A question for Producer Toba! Valentine's Q&A

Q: How do you think Kazuki, Rei, and Miri would spend Valentine's Day?

Toba: I think Kazuki would make incredibly delicious chocolate confections. The whole table is covered with everything from cakes to parfaits to chocolate fondue to ganache... He also has 95% cocoa chocolate for himself, but I think he prepares much sweeter chocolate full of milk, for Miri. He should really be the receiving party in the first place, but he ends up making everything to give to Miri. Then Miri gives him a little chocolate she bought from some supermarket or conbini, and Kazuki is so happy he bursts into tears. (laughs)

Interview with the Love Guru: Producer Toba Yosuke

We wanted to depict the changes in a contrasting assassin duo

Interviewer: How exactly was the theme of "Buddy Daddies" decided?

Toba: We were discussing potential themes for an original anime with P.A. Works, and the producer Tsuji-san suggested, "Maybe something about parenting a 4 or 5-year-old?" Tsuji-san himself was right in the middle of working hard to raise a child, and so he wanted to reflect those ideas in an anime. And then it occurred to us that we could get a lot of comedy out of a story where someone who absolutely isn't cut out for parenting has to struggle to raise a child. In that case, who should we saddle with parenting? We thought it over, and the direct opposite of "raising children" is "killing people". So how about an assassin? And then it clicked into place. The only issue was that a child who is 4 or 5 years old is still at an age where they "can't act freely on their own" - so how would they be taken in by the assassin? We were stumped for a while because of that. That's when I discussed it with Shimokura-san (Shimokura Vio) from Nitroplus, and he suggested, "What about making it an assassin duo? Say the two of them pick up the child during a fight - I think a setup like that has potential." Upon hearing him say this, I thought, "That's it!" A family with no blood ties, and two men raising a child - a story like this would truly embody our modern times and their diversifying values. It felt like a perfect fit to me. I thought, "This could really go somewhere!" And so we went ahead with production.

Interviewer: Was there anything you paid particular attention to when depicting them?

Toba: I think we stuck quite closely to the fundamental premise of "two polar opposites are paired up as assassins, but once they take in a child, their lives begin to change". Kazuki is an assassin but has plenty of warm human emotion, and Rei knows nothing other than killing people in cold blood. How will these two men change because of a child? We wanted to depict that very carefully.

Interviewer: Was any part of the production process especially memorable?

Toba: The cast was decided by audition, but honestly, Toyonaga-san and Uchiyama-san are so perfect that I have to wonder if Kazuki and Rei were already written with them in mind. (laughs) Toyonaga-san gives off this sense of "warmth, but when he wants to play his cards close to his chest, he keeps them very close - but he also has a free and uninhibited side to him", and that's a breathtakingly perfect fit for Kazuki. As for Rei, we were already saying "Rei is very Uchiyama-san, huh (laughs)" from pretty early on in the production process. The recording sessions blew me away - you could really feel how well their characters mapped on to Kazuki and Rei.

Interviewer: Please give a message to our readers about what they can expect from here on.

Toba: Before Miri shows up, Kazuki and Rei are essentially living without any thoughts of the future. Given their line of work, they have no idea when they might die; they live like they could die at any moment, and they're fine with that. But once they have Miri - a child they need to protect and raise - their life rapidly changes. Is that good news or bad news for them? And what will their changes mean for the people around them? I hope you'll observe these "changes" for yourself.

persona 4: general date headcanons (yu narukami, yosuke hanamura, kanji tatsumi)

notes: gender-neutral reader, fluff, reader implied to be a part of the investigation team

yu narukami

kind of a classic romantic. starts with going out to a movie. will take you out to dinner and buy dessert. maybe even a quick trip to the hot springs to unwind before going home.

holds open doors for you and stuff (bc he's a GENTLEMAN!!!) and insists on paying when he can. but, if you really insist, he won't put up much of a fuss.

will stop on a walk to pet a cat he sees across the street. you join him (unless you're allergic in which he will carry some hand sanitiser on him at all times to wash his hands before going back to holding yours)

gives you a hug and kiss on the back of your hand before saying goodbye, but doesn't keep up the gentleman act seriously for long before bursting into giggles.

he's just a rlly sweet boy

yosuke hanamura

a bit less formal than yu, but still tries his best.

as much as he'd like to go all-out, taking you to the nicest places and spending the night dancing under the stars...... he's still just a part-time worker.

so he'll have to settle for something a bit more homey. buys all your favourite snacks and candy and invites you over to play video games with him.

does the thing where he sorta-spoons you (sits behind you, wraps his legs around your torso, and rests his chin on your head as you two play games). it makes him feel like The Man in the relationship, irregardless of your gender. you keep telling him he doesn't have to be this macho image of a strong, providing boyfriend, but he feels confident when he's the big spoon so yk, you go along with it

steals kisses whenever he can (usually to distract you from your game (bastard.)), but again, he's just too cute to get really mad at.

kanji tatsumi

cooks for you! he's actually a pretty decent cook (not as good as yu though) and along with cooking dinner, will probably have made something for you beforehand and gives it to you.

i imagine you and kanji would really be into stuff like journalling or colouring books. a date with kanji is Floor Time(tm) with some tv on in the background and doing a colouring date.

sometimes you'd do the thing where you put on a timer and after it goes off, swap drawings and finish what the other has drawn. kanji, despite being amazing at fabric arts, isn't the best artist. he tries his best though!!!!

sooner or later you'd probably end up cuddling with a mountain of plushies or other soft material while talking. such is life at the tatsumi household.

• He got stronger, put an end to it and he changed

• Although we saw him as a power-hungry and ambitious person for a while, we know that he has matured quite a bit and now has "friends"

• I don't think Todoroki is the type to fall in love at first sight.He needs to know his partner well and spend time with her.

• I don't even think he was aware of his feelings for a long time.

• In time, he will realize his feelings.

• Maybe his friends will make him realize

• I think he will like someone ordinary

• He needs a calm and kind hearted person who is absolutely free from fights and gangs.

Yosuke sucks in an interesting way so it feels almost like he was meant to have an arc where he learns how to not suck so bad even though that's not true (because atlus very obviously agrees with him and his bigotry lol). It's easy to read into him, he's a pretty multifaceted character. Meanwhile akechi is barely around for most of p5 and his confidant is automatic so you don't get to know him organically and has no relationships to be interesting in outside of akira who he is fake to 100% until the last 15 minutes he's on screen but the game is constantly trying to tell you how you're both sooo alike and you're two sides of the same coin rivals when like. I don't know that kid. He just trauma dumped on me about his dead mom while I was at work one time. The fact you don't know adachi like that is the point because his age is a distancing factor to clue the player into the fact souji could have GROWN UP to be like him as a potential end game so the lack of consistent interaction works. It doesn't work if they're the same age unless there's some other external factor keeping them from connecting and there kinda isn't? And he was the character so popular we centered the rerelease around fixing him and ignoring the rest of the phantom thieves??? Make it make sense

ALL OF THISSSSS SPEAK YOUR TRUTH! and the insistence that 'you're both the same' is what really annoyed me flkkfafkff. cuz beyond your fools' power you're not? yeah akechi and the protag have had tough upbringings bc of adults but idk it doesnt really read the same. ironically akechi and ryuji have the more similar backstories what with a fucked up father making their lives miserable. and i loveeeee the two side of the same coin trope and usually persona does it really well. like hellooooooo all of the shadow self/reflection selves in persona 2 was saur fucking good. and they even had villians mirror the protags but they dropped hints! the motifs were similar! it just didnt work w akechi like it worked in persona 4 bc their entrance into the persona power wasn't similar at all. personally i think they shouldve ditched the 'youre the same' to focus on akechi just having an intense irrational jealousy of the protag that you actually get to see building. im talking cut scenes of akechi fucking going rabid alone bc he HATES that you have the same power but everyone is being drawn to the protag despite being a 'criminal' and only just now getting powers etc etc. like you can't not show us a character but also expect us to give a fuck which is a big problem of persona 5. npcs will get barely any time but we're supposed to like. be throwing up and screaming over them girl i don't know that mf!

“Hey, Yosuke I…” Your voice trails off as Yosuke gives you a hug. You feel your heart pound as Yosuke soothingly runs his hand up and down your back.

“Yeah? What’s up?” Yosuke gazes at you with eyes full of curiosity.

You were waiting outside of Yasogami High for Yosuke, and he finally arrived. You two have been pretty close for awhile now; you are one of his closest friends, aside from Yu Narukami.

Recently you’ve felt overjoyed whenever Yosuke entered your line of sight, and you’ve wanted to spend more time with him as of late. He’s been quite busy with his other friends so he hasn’t been spending as much time with you.

One afternoon your friend noticed the way your eyes lit up when Yosuke walked over to give you a hug. They teased you saying, “Looks like someone has a crush.”

You brushed the comment off at the time, but ever since then you’ve been thinking.. Maybe your friend was right? You've never experienced romantic attraction before so.. maybe they're on to something? Honestly, you’ll never know unless you’re upfront about your feelings with Yosuke.

And that’s what you’ve resolved to do today.

Yosuke waves a hand in front of your face, bringing you back to the present. “Helllooo, earth to Y/n. You there?” You take a deep breath as you push your nerves aside to have an honest conversation with Yosuke.

“Well… I think I like you. Like, romantically… maybe.” Yosuke freezes as his cheeks slowly turn to a pink hue. Your words were a little awkward, but he got the message.

He looks down at his feet as he nervously runs his fingers through his soft hair.

“Oh… well, honestly Y/n… I.. I believe the feelings are mutual.” Your eyes light up with joy at Yosuke’s confession. You both stare at each other for a few moments before you move in for another hug.

This time, Yosuke pulls you in a bit closer as he rests his head on your shoulder.

Your heart flutters, but otherwise.. you don’t feel any different. You assume it’s because of how close the two of you are, so you don’t worry yourself over it as the two of you walk to class.

₊˚ʚ ᗢ₊˚✧ ﾟ.

“Hey! I’ve missed you.” Yosuke waves to you as you meet up with him in the halls of Yasogami High. “Hey!” You move in closer to give him a hug, and his wide grin causes you to sport one of your own.

You think you two should do more than hug and hold hands, but you aren’t exactly sure if you.. want to do more. I mean, you two only confessed your feelings for each other a few days ago. There’s no need to rush.

Although, you do recall how uneasy you felt when you first held hands with Yosuke. The two of you gradually stopped holding hands for unspoken reasons.

You stare at Yosuke once you pull away from the hug as you think about this. Yosuke chuckles as he raises an inquisitive eyebrow at your expression.

“Uh… you good?” You don’t respond to Yosuke’s question since you’re preoccupied with calming your nerves. You take a deep breath before you step closer to Yosuke.

His eyes follow your movements as you gently raise your hand to rest on his cheek. You feel all kinds of awkward doing this, but you figure it’ll feel better once your lips are actually on his.

These feelings have to be a part of the process, right?

Yosuke’s eyes look comically wide as you lean in to give him a kiss. As your lips meet his you expect fireworks to go off and for your heart to pound, like your friends have told you it feels. None of that happens. Instead, honestly you feel..

A little uncomfortable.

You quickly pull away to stare at Yosuke with an awkward grimace on your face. Will he be offended if you tell him you felt uncomfortable?

..Even if he is, it’s better to be honest…

As you open your mouth to speak, Yosuke beats you to the punch.

“Um.. as much as I love hanging out with you, and as close as we are.. Um.. I’m thinking that kissing and like, doing romantic things like that just.. isn’t for me. Now don’t get me wrong! You’re an amazing person, but every time we’ve done something remotely romantic it just doesn’t… do anything for me.” Yosuke sheepishly looks away as he explains his feelings to you.

Instead of the angry rage he expected to see from you, there’s a smile on your lips. Yosuke doesn’t know if that’s a good sign or a bad one, but when you hug him he realizes everything will be okay.

Air finally enters his lungs as he releases a breath he didn’t know he was holding.

“Don’t worry about it, you dork. Honestly I wasn’t really feeling that kiss either, so the feelings’ mutual. …I think our classmates at Yasogami High put a lot of importance on romantic relationships, but they aren’t for everyone, you know? I think our relationship is fine as it is, without the romance. Agree?” You pull away from the hug to look at Yosuke.

You’re a bit startled when you see tears in his eyes, but your surprise quickly turns into joy when he grins at you. “Agreed! Now, wanna go annoy Teddie? I have today off from work, and Teddie got roped into helping out at Junes since he decided to “upgrade his wardrobe” if you know what I mean.”

I laugh as Yosuke rolls his eyes at the thought of Teddie being his usual self. We walk side by side as we head to Junes, minus the hand holding, and everything feels just right.

It was that time of the year when you grew a year older.

You had to be honest. You did not care much about your birthday. Even though it was a special moment, you never made it a big deal. In fact, throughout most of your life, you have never made it a celebration unless your friends and family had planned something extra. Therefore, the most you spent on your birthday was opening presents and maybe going out.

That was, until today.

At first, it started with you waking up to breakfast in bed. And yes, all of it was made by your boyfriend, Yosuke. You did not want to discredit him for his cooking skills. It was only the fact that he must have had to wake up early to make it. And he was one to only sleep in late whenever possible.

You were impressed by how full you felt after eating. But little did you know, that was only the beginning.

That was when Yosuke took you to Okina City, where you met up with the rest of the Investigation Team. You never thought you could have had this much fun on a day, but holy shit. It was a blast, especially in the shopping mall. Yosuke was spoiling you like you were royalty. Although you were concerned that his wallet would end up empty even before the end of the day (which surprisingly did not happen. But it almost did).

It was not as if you were not grateful for what your boyfriend and friends had planned. You were thankful for everything they did during the celebration! However, Yosuke had another surprise. After being told to close your eyes and open your palms, you felt something in your hands.

Opening your eyes, you swore your face had gone pale. It was two tickets to see (F/A). What shook you was that the concert was happening today, and Yosuke had bought them without your knowledge.

You had no words to describe how fun the concert was. All you knew was that it was one for the memory books.

The moment you walked into the bedroom, you rushed straight to the bed, collapsing onto it back first. Yosuke chuckled, placing almost all your gifts on the floor (Of course, he wanted to be extra and carry almost everything. You were worried that his arms would fall off from how much was in it). “Had a pretty busy day, right, babe?”

“Tell me about me,” you grinned. You slowly sat up. “But it was fun. I never expected to be spending my birthday like this. I can’t even believe you planned all of this out without my knowledge!”

“Well, you are my (s/o), so I gotta treat you like royalty on your birthday! But then again,” Yosuke sat down next to you, wrapping an arm around your shoulder and pulling you closer to him. “I have to treat you like royalty every day, regardless. I would be a pretty shitty boyfriend if I didn’t do that,” You felt yourself blushing as he turned to place a kiss on your cheek, but then you smiled.

“You’re the best. Do you know that? You made this one of the best birthdays of my life. Ever.”

Yosuke smiled softly. “I guess I did a good job planning your birthday, then!” He chuckled. “But anything for my baby.”

A few minutes of silence passed. During that time, Yosuke unreleased his arms from your waist, and you decided to check out your presents again. To say you were happy with what you received on your birthday was a bit of an understatement. All your friends knew you so well!

However, unbeknownst to you, Yosuke was staring at you with a nervous feeling crawling up inside him. He never thought he would be this nervous, especially since the day he asked you to be his (S/O). Yet, here it was, the butterflies in his stomach. He could almost feel his heartbeat increasing.

It was when you turned around to put your new (F/A/C) statue on the shelf (given to you by Yu) that Yosuke stood up. “Babe?” As you turned around to face him upon hearing your nickname, he found himself blushing. You tilted your head when he said nothing, and your boyfriend sighed. “Sorry. I..uh…”

Damn it, you better not chicken out! Just do it!

Yosuke internally grimaced at the voice in his head. Suddenly, it was almost as if you were fading away, and the only thing present was himself and his inner consciousness. Was he about to get into another argument with himself again?!

I will, but not now!

You got the perfect opportunity to do it, and you decide to back out?! Get on with it!

How can I when I’m nervous?!

THEN STOP BEING NERVOUS! I SWEAR TO GOD IF YOU FUCK THIS WHOLE THING UP–

“You good?”

Yosuke blinked at your voice. That was when he made eye contact with you, and Yosuke noticed a somewhat concerned look on your face. “Hon, you blanked out.”

The brown-haired man sighed and ran his hand through his hair. “Sorry, (N/N). I'm...nervous. I don't wanna mess up this surprise, you know? Especially not on your birthday.”

Your heart clenched, watching as Yosuke looked off to the side, not wanting to make eye contact with you. And at that point, you could sense his nervousness. If there was one thing you hated, it was your boyfriend being insecure and nervous. So you carefully placed your hand on his cheek, caressing his skin with your thumb, and that was when he looked back at you.

“Yosu, you could never do anything to mess up my surprises,” you cooed. “Haven’t you seen how well your surprises went on my birthday? I literally could not stop thinking about them! So whatever you have planned for me next, I’m ready for it. No matter how big or small it is.”

Seeing your smile and hearing the cute nickname you gave him shot a tang of happiness in his heart. God, you were just so cute!

With his anxiety almost fading away, Yosuke sighed again and cleared his throat. “Well then, I guess I’ll get on with it.” He started. He scratched his cheek with a finger before staring at you again. “(Y/N), I first need to ask you this question, and I want you to answer me as honestly as possible.”

You raised an eyebrow but nodded your head. “Got it. What’s up?”

Yosuke then looked straight into your eyes, but not in a creepy way. “Do you see yourself being with me forever? Like for the rest of your life until the day you die?”

You were taken aback by this question. It almost made you curious about the surprise, wanting to know about it now. But you knew this would not happen, so you might as well give Yosuke a reply. “I’m not lying when I say this, but yes,” A blush crept on your cheeks. “Considering how many years we have been together, you make me so happy, and without you, I dunno what to do. I don’t think I could have asked for a better boyfriend like you, not that I think I would ask for another one.”

God damn, Yosuke almost wanted to tear up. But not now.

“I’m glad you think so because I feel the same way,” Yosuke continued. “Honestly, sometimes I can’t help but be in disbelief that I’m dating someone as amazing as you. Despite some of the stupid things I did in the past or just how ridiculous I can be, you have never once thought of leaving me. You have always stayed by my side and helped me whenever needed. That is why I just had to ask you.”

This is it, me. No going back!

Yosuke almost felt like he was shaking when he slowly got down onto his knees, pulling out a small box. Your eyes widened at first at this action, but they widened even more as soon as he opened it. In it was a small golden ring. It sat there in front of you, showing off its beauty with the way it shone. Oh my God, you thought to yourself.

Feeling as though a tear was going to trickle down his cheek, Yosuke looked up at you and smiled softly. “(Y/N) (Y/L), will you stay with me for the rest of my life and marry me?”

An overwhelming feeling washed over you like the waves on the beach. You could not believe what was happening.

“W-Wait, are you serious?” you had to ask out of disbelief. “You want me to marry you?” You had to admit you had moments where you wanted to be married to your boyfriend before. But never have you thought of proposing to him or making him propose. If anything, this almost felt like a dream.

Yosuke chuckled. “Yes, babe. I’m being a hundred percent serious! More than anything in life, I want you to be my spouse. And I want to continue living with you for eternity. So what do you say?”

That was it. There was no holding back. Tears started forming in your eyes and immediately poured down your cheeks. “Yes,” you answered in a shaky voice as you nodded your head. “Yes, of course, I will marry you!”

Yosuke decided there was no other choice but to let his happy tears fall. He stood up on his feet and took your left hand, carefully placing the ring on your finger.

“G-God, Yosu, this ring is beautiful!” you gushed, looking at the finger. You have not done anything to it yet, but you were already starting to get scared that something would happen to it.

Your now-fiance chuckled. “I had to get it for the most beautiful person I know. And I’m glad I bought it. It looks perfect on you.”

The waterworks in your eyes kept on running, and you doubt they would stop anytime soon. You looked up at Yosuke with tear-stained vision. “This has been the best birthday ever. Not only did I spend it with the best people in my life, but now my long-time boyfriend is my fiance!”

“That proposal was the best present ever, am I right, baby?” Yosuke winked, poking your cheek.

“Damn right it was,” you grinned.

Then you placed your hands on his cheeks, pulling his face in for a kiss. There was no hesitation as he returned the kiss, wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling you close. At that moment, you and Yosuke felt like the only people in the world.

Pulling away, you looked up at Yosuke. “I love you so much, Yosu. So Goddamn much.”

Yosuke smiled softly, leaning forward so his forehead would be resting against yours. “And I love you so much too, (N/N). Happy birthday, baby.”

aaand before we end the fanfic, i have a message for you, nikki:

damn. you’re 26 now? just 4 more years until you’re 30, you old hag. LMAO JK JK.

but anyways, i hope you enjoyed this fanfic! i’m sorry i couldn’t actually buy you anything and then give it to you as an early present when i saw you last weekend. unfortunately, i couldn’t find anything good to give you, but i felt bad for nothing getting you anything, so i might as well write you another yosuke fic (don’t worry, hopefully by this christmas, i’ll find you something good hehe 😉).

has since become very close, often spend time together during their school years and can understand each other without the need of saying a word. And YES i also think that their relationship doesnt evolve into romantic one until post-reunion bcs of internalized homophobia on nanjo's side, thinking if they did get into relationship it'll ruin his family's name, and they had mutual feelings but werent brave enough to actually confess it, though they might've picked (3/?)

i love this version of naokei a lot too!! it's a very common idea i see when absolutely scraping the tumblr barrel for naokei content. it is worth noting that whenever i write persona stuff i always just delete homophobia from the world (unless it works for a very specific purpose, like me explaining yosuke's actions in persona 4 as internalized homophobia) bc i enjoy not having to think about it in my fictional universes lol HOWEVER of course nanjo would suffer from internalized homophobia (if it existed in my world) !!!!!!!!! also i hope u dont mind me putting this in a new post to respond, this is a side blog so i can't respond directly. also also don't worry about persona 2 spoilers i've already spoiled myself plenty cuz i'm too lazy to play the games just yet but i do need to know some of the stuff for my writing

"We can wait for your water before we begin, if you'd like." She says this, but she's already pulling papers out from a binder she'd had sitting on the table-- Yosuke's application forms. Face down. "Uh, w-whatever's convenient to you. I can be flexible either way." Fujiwara smiles kindly. "Then we'll wait." She makes small talk, but Yosuke answers mostly on auto-pilot; he figures he can get away with that, considering these aren't the important questions he'll no doubt be asked. Is it really just Fujiwara? No one else? No committee? Unless this is all just a formality, and the committee has already chosen... Yosuke closes his eyes; they are all there, in his head. They're still waiting to hear about his support system. Who will he rely on when it all falls apart? When he opens his eyes, the water is on the table. Fujiwara has a clipboard in her hand, and a patient look on her features. "Shall we begin?" Yosuke closes his eyes again. His father's words come back to him: "No use fretting over things we don't have control over. Whatever is going to happen, will happen, regardless of your efforts to summon or discard of it." And suddenly, he knows what he would say to that imaginary committee about his parents if they asked. Yosuke freezes, takes a sip of water, and then nods. "Yes."

Top five favorite lizards

What specific dishes do you care about enough to grow everything require for in the event of supply line collapse? How feasible is this for your location or expected location, or are u gonna move to make it happen?

i would definitely go for a big bird of prey... like maybe an eagle or something, cause i want to be able to fly around!! but i want him (my beautiful steed) to be combat ready

man, that's a lot of zucchini... i like zucchini, but it's kind of watery unless you cook it right :") i think it would take a few months if i forced myself

i'm not very reptilepilled so i dunno... i like the charmander line of pokemon, and salandit and helioptile so that's 5 right??

this is a crazy question, my favorite foods are super spiced so i honestly don't know if i could do any of them :( i guess maybe some sort of sweet loaf cake... i like baked goods and they're not too hard to make!! tho the sugar...

Too tired rn to work on the scenario I'm supposed to be so here's persona (3-5) characters as gift givers

Minato: good but the timing is never expected. He'll just see or make something, go "hn, they'd like this" and not wait for a holiday or birthday to hand it over. On the flip side unless he's made promises he's probably forgotten to get gifts ahead of time.

Hamuko: excellent gift giver, and she even gets the timing right. It's never something you'd thought to ask for though. Always something useful or that you really like, but never what you'd think up on your own.

Mitsuru: It's not that she's a bad gift giver- far from it- it's just that she's got a sort of limited idea of the kinds of gifts to give for any specific event. Unless you ask for something specific, you can probably sort every gift she gives into a few categories. Still, whatever she gives is either extremely high quality or super sentimental. Or both.

Akihiko: help him. He's not "the worst gift giver ever" or anything but he never knows what specifically to give someone. Well not never. Occasionally he strikes gold and we love him for the effort either way.

Shinji: I don't want to say bad, but how often do you really expect he'd bother at all? Not a big "gifts" guy. More likely to cook for you if you're close enough for him to bother doing anything at all. He's sweet under everything, but that doesn't make him great at gift giving.

Yukari: decent gift giver. Consistently gives good, appropriate gifts. They may not be "the best gift from x holiday" but you know you'll like anything she got you

Junpei: mixed bag. On one hand he can absolutely figure out great gifts, on the other hand he might get sidetracked and get you something he'd like without realizing. Unless he really likes you, in which case he may take it far more seriously.

Fuuka: she's good at it! As she gets older she gets better at giving gifts. She may even make you little tech things if she can.

Aigis: that super depends on how close you are. If you're not very close you might get, like, a gift card. If you are close she may try to find something specific for you. Whether she succeeds in getting you something good also is kind of a coin toss. She's not awful at it though.

Ken: he tries! He usually even succeeds!

Koromaru: he is a dog. He gives you his time and love, what else could you ever want.

Yu: Great gift giver! He cares so much all the time. Probably the type to go "Oh they would like this" and get something right away to give later, at a more fitting time for gifts.

Yosuke: man he tries is best. He would be the best gift giver we're it not for money. As is he does what he can with what he's got.

Chie: im so sorry to say, middling gift giver. She's perfect at giving gifts to certain people, and awful for others. Hope you'd be on the former side.

Yukiko: so long as she hasn't decided to cook for you? Genuinely good a giving small gifts. Larger gestures are a bit awkward so she's more likely to give you a dozen small gifts than one bigger one.

Kanji: FANTASTIC gift giver. 10/10. He makes all his gifts himself and they're perfect and if you have any complaints you're wrong.

Rise: good! Rise is a pretty solid giver of gifts. Might even give the occasional super great gift if she really likes you.

Naoto: solid gift giver. She rarely if ever disappoints with her choice of present. You will always be happy with something if it's from Naoto.

Teddie: his gifts are sweet, that doesn't necessarily mean they're good. Like when a child gives you a gift and you cherish it, of course, but it's not the best thing you were given objectively. Maybe a little better than that.

Labrys: she's okay at giving gifts, but the lack of experience with others shows in how much she struggles to pick one

Ren: great. Maybe a bit spontaneous with when he actually gives gifts, but great. Always has something for holidays/birthdays, but the best gifts you'll get will be the random ones

Ryuji: actually great too, but he doesn't have the ability to actually get as many gifts. Besides most of his gift giving is to his mom, so any other gifts to other people are second priority.

Ann: also good! You will never be disappointed in a gift she's given you. Her gifts are also probably pretty sentimental, so you know she didn't just pick something at random last minute. Unlikely to randomly give gifts, though.

Yusuke: boys broke so you're not getting anything that isn't homemade. If he does make you something- or let's be real just if he paints you something- it will be incredible. It's just a matter of if he'll actually remembers to

Makoto: she's doing her best. Sometimes her gifts are a little generic or underwhelming, but you know she's trying. She may even strike gold once in a while.

Futaba: oh she's great at it, she probably has your search history to reference- okay but seriously if you have wishlists she also has your wishlist, so you'll get something you wanted

Haru: sometimes her gifts are a little weird but she's not bad necessarily. Just a solid attempt every time.

Akechi: man I don't know. Could he be good at it? Absolutely. Will he actually go out of is way to get you a gift? Ehhh maybe. Depends where he is in his own life.

Morgana: where's the cat getting gifts? He'd be fine if he were able to.

Sumire: good! Just a solid gift giver, I don't have much else to say.
