Week 43.4/52: October 24th - October 30th 2022 | Day in KTown 🥔 

Haven’t gone to Coquitlam for food adventures in ages! Went to try Arirang Hot Dog with Jesslyn and it was pretty huge and yum!! I got their poutine corn dog which is basically just potato corn dog with gravy and cheese curd on the side.... LOL.... but it tasted quite good. Had a cheese pull for days. A bit bigger than Chungchun but it’s also more expensive so it evens out lmao. We only ate one corndog each so we went to have early dinner at Kimbap Cheonguk. Got cheese gimbap & beef gimbap. Also got a plate of spicy rice cakes - long time no eat. Their rice cakes were super spicy and yum I LOVE IT. The rolls kept falling apart when I was trying to pick it up LOL FAIL. WAS SO FULL AFTER. Ended the day with green grape ade from Cafe Bono. I LOVE GREEN GRAPE! 💚

Creating Unlimited Blessings

In a tug of war, the side with more people and more strength wins.  Right now, the side of mundane beings, those who create negative karma, has many people.  The side of living bodhisattvas, people who do good and create blessings, has a lot less people.  Because our world has more negative karma than blessings, we see many disasters happening, from natural disasters to manmade disasters to the pandemic.  To turn the world’s crises around, we need more people to create blessings. 

Given that the number of living bodhisattvas are so few compared to the world population, it seems like a daunting task to inspire and convince people to join the bodhisattva side to do good and create blessings.  Yet, Dharma Master Cheng Yen tells us to develop the mindset of “creating unlimited blessings”.  She illustrates this concept using Tzu Chi’s rice bank program in Myanmar.

Fourteen years ago, Tzu Chi volunteers went to Myanmar for a disaster relief.  Cyclone Nargis flooded a swath of farmland and impacted the livelihood of many farmers.  Tzu Chi distributed food to the cyclone affectees as well as rice seeds and fertilizers to the impacted farmers.  Since then, Tzu Chi has established charity work in Myanmar to help the poor.  While helping the poor, we inspire the aid recipients to give and help other people in hardship. 

Myanmar has a tradition of people setting aside a handful of rice for donation before they cook their meal.  After the farmers received aid from Tzu Chi, saving a handful of rice daily became a way for poor farmers to give.  It started out with one farmer who then influenced another farmer to do the same.  As this practice spreads, it became Tzu Chi’s rice bank program in Myanmar.

As of now, there are over 57,000 households participating in Tzu Chi’s rice bank program.  Many of them are poor farmers.  Even though they are poor, they can work, so they have food to eat.  By donating a handful of rice from their rice container every day, it does not impact their livelihood.  Yet, a little bit of giving, when pooled together, can help a significant number of people.  Every month, the rice collected from these 57,000-plus households goes to help over 3,000 poor families.

In over ten years’ time, the number of donating members grew from one to 57,000-plus households.  Donating one handful of rice daily accumulates into a large pile of rice that can feed 3,000-plus families every month.

Master says we are to learn about numbers.  By accumulating those numbers, we can feel its significance.  The number 57,000-plus rice bank members means 57,000-plus families are doing good and creating blessings.  Seeing these numbers, we are to develop faith.  With faith, we can create unlimited blessings. 

To create unlimited blessings, we mustn’t get attached to numbers.  Having faith in ourselves that we’re able to help countless people, we turn these countable numbers into something uncountable.  Through words of mouth, if each person in the 57,000-plus families can inspire additional 57,000-plus people to do good, and this process continues on and on, the number of people being inspired to do good would grow to be very large.  When our heart is so vast that we don’t set an upper limit, we’ll not get attached to the numbers.  When there’s no upper limit, there’s no need to calculate the numbers.  When no calculation is being done, there will be no attachment.  This is how Master creates blessings continuously, yet at the same time, not get attached to how much blessing is created.

Master encourages everyone to believe in themselves that they can create unlimited blessings by spreading wholesome teachings so that more people can receive the teachings, and be inspired to do good and create blessings.  Then, together, we would create unlimited blessings for the world.  Having blessings, the world will become prosperous and peaceful.  With blessings, climate will become favorable and make people healthy.  For this, let’s give of ourselves without limit to create unlimited blessings.
