Fakir's theme (Beethoven's Coriolan Overture) always struck me as funny because it stands apart from the other character's themes. Mytho has the delicate Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Rue the somber Gymnopedie No 1, Duck the cheerful Nutcracker Oveture etc... while Fakir's theme is well... LOUD.
It characterizes his most aggressive moments, mainly playing in scenes where he antagonizes Mytho and Duck.
youtube
This always sat a little weird with me as it is a very surface-level character theme for such a complex character. In contrast, Rue's theme tells us something about her motivations under the Kraehe persona. Fakir's on the other hand tells us that he's mean and aggressive... something any viewer who's gotten to a scene where the song plays already knows.
On one of my rewatches, though, I noticed that he has another song that functions as a sort of secondary theme: an excerpt from Scheherazade.
youtube
This song plays most notably throughout most of episode 12, while he is bonding with Duck. It shows up a few times later in season 2, mainly in scenes concerning Fakir's struggle to write. As such, I view it as a complementary theme to the Coriolan Overture.
Listening to the song, it feels much more in line with Fakir we've come to know him. The song can be a little delicate and a little sad with gentle wind solos that lead into loud, grand orchestral sections. The repetitiveness, tempo, and use of dramatic brass and strings give these louder sections a gallant, almost desperate tone. It's super fitting that this is the song that plays throughout the episode where we get the best sense of Fakir's natural personality when he isn't putting on the cold persona.
I don't really have a deeper analysis here I just think it's really fun that as his character develops he gets an additional theme. If you think about it the music in Tutu functions as a sort of jukebox musical--the world and characters are built around the songs. Once we start to get to know who Fakir really is, the music that represents him changes to reflect him better.

actually i do have something to say about this chapter and it's quite critical of it but also i'm tired tonight and i've been talking about it long and hard on discord already and putting it all together in a coherent post feels like too much of a task tonight. all i'm gonna say is that part 2 was very obviously going in a certain direction from the start, and i loved that direction, and to an extent it is still going in that direction but now very obviously missing a huge chunk of what stirred it in that direction. and i'm hesitant to simply say it's fujimoto that's dropped the ball on this (though it might the idealization, who's to say) because from the actual shape of the writing + slump in paneling/art + recent bitter interview by fujimoto + japanese audience is apparently vocally not a fan of asa + my own cursed knowledge of shounen jump and shueisha editors and how they react to a fall in sales = i think the lack of focus on asa has really hurt the themes of part 2 when she was an integral part of it + i think this wasn't entirely fujimoto's doing and it's very likely because she is apparently strongly disliked in japan and there's good reason to believe that fujimoto was told to not focus on her nearly as much bc sales slump and people complain as soon as she shows up. which sucks. becaue what made part 2 work as well as it did was the synergy and parallel between the two protagonists' paths, and the absence of asa's path in the past few months (both in universe and by real time in the comic) feels like a genuine writing and thematic and emotional hole in the comic that to me shows that she WAS supposed to be there. fujimoto had fully intended to write her in there bc there's a hole in the shape of her where she is very obviously supposed to fit. it isn't simply a question of "author forgets his female character" it's a question of "this crucial part of the manga is missing and the author is painfully aware of it and bitter about it too"

Touma Akagi is my son (and Kiria is my daughter so I drew her again bc I love and cherish her) and I just. Think that he's a funny fella. A little guy. The Mirage relationships are so funny cause it's like. Main guy > similar wanting to help everyone vibes and Mirage is supportive. Main girl > very affectionate looking out for her by Mirage. Touma and Cain > "Touma, you concern me" "that's mean to say out loud :c" "very well..."
Touma is just fun ;w; I like him. I want him to just be friends with absolutely everyone.

on one hand my stubborn refusal to make a lot of crossover verses (i refuse to ever separate dark and dai AND it's hard as hell to get the depth of their shared existence juuuust right) may someday be the death of all interactions for me, BUT on the other hand i also think it's very cute and potentially really interesting that dark and daisuke can world-jump already. it CAN add another fun fairy tail/biblical layer to things whenever it happens. here's alice in wonderland who's come through the looking glass, here's a monstrous boy-messiah fluttering out from the frame of a beautiful painting. here's a red-headed cherub lost and bewildered after dropping like a shooting star into your yard or your camp, here's a fallen angel landing at your feet from someplace beyond, suddenly lifting his head up and talking about/knowing completely bizarre things that nobody else in the world they've only just arrived in knows about. daisuke's sense of 'mundane' can be completely, utterly incomprehensible to some crossover muses, the same way he can end up lost and alone in their worlds. just like a real angel, even if daisuke is just an ordinary, albeit cursed boy by most standards. do u get what i mean!!

Ok stupid question but I had to ask BC I love the way you answer things haha 💓💓 (Sorry if that was worded weirdly)
So Jonesy (I think that's the dog's name in House of Wax) from all the Sinclair brothers who do you Jonesy likes the most and who do you think likes Jonesy the best?
it's not weird at all!! now that my HOW brainworms are back, any excuse to ramble incoherently about this dumbass movie and the characters is like. PURE gold. lmao 💀
okay, so imo, vinny is definitely the favorite. the first place where we see jonesy in the movie is in the wax museum and that is def not a coincidence!! they were hanging out!! jonesy just got bored of watching her dad labor over the fine details of the wax titty & wandered upstairs.
they're best friends!! I just know it!! that shot where vincent's turning wade to wax? and jonesy jumps up on the bed? the CUTEST. rip wade 🙏 but?? I adore that sm.
and he takes the puppy w/him when he goes to murder blake & paige. unhinged dog dad behavior if I've ever seen it. I can 100% see them both quietly coexisting in the same space together for hours on end—vincent sculpting and sketching, jonesy napping next to him. padding upstairs in the middle of the night to have a midnight snack. UGH
I v much also subscribe to the line of thinking that lester doesn't live in corpsetown & has a lil shack of his own in the woods. but he absolutely hustles up to the house routinely to bring jonesy weird roadkill snacks and play w/her in the backyard. if anyone in the family is committed to getting her energy out, it's v much him. they're just outside for hours n hours tossing a mangled deer leg around and kicking up dirt. I feel.
as for bo. well. he v much strikes me as the kind of guy who pretends to be fairly ambivalent about the fact they have a dog running around. if jonesy ever stirs up trouble or chews thru smthn, he's the first one to be like, "UH??? it's your fuckin' dog?? I ain't never ask for this??"
v much onery dad energy. he catches vincent giving jonesy some food off his plate and immediately starts talking about how he's spoiling the damn dog and THIS is why she knocked over the garbage can & got coffee grounds and eggshells all over the kitchen floor.
never mind that he's always giving her scraps of whatever random concoction he's eating. she's chowing down on eggo waffles and beef jerky and hostess snacks whenever he's around. but no, it's vincent who spoils her. sure, jan.
he wants a huntin and fishin dog, but he's not much of a hunter or a fisher. so he gets a couch potato that sits next to him while he drinks beer and rewatches old spaghetti westerns. and he totally doesn't care about it or like her. totally.

Would you ever consider writing a one-shot (maybe for the 1 year anniversary?) with what would have happened had reg made it out alive (I would cry)
hi! i don't know if i'm going to put out anything for the one year anniversary of art heist but if i did it wouldn't be a regulus-living-situation sorry! any situation that comes out of art heist where regulus lives is an alternate ending to me. and regulus living was just,,, never the story i wanted to write. and tbh my fear is a lot of people would read that ending and say "this is the ending we deserved" or "this is how it should've gone" or "i'm pretending this was the original ending" and none of those things feel super great i can't lie! and i feel like it detracts from the original intent of the story i wrote which makes me :((( yk? (maybe you don't know and that's okay) but regulus was always supposed to die! he was never meant to make it out alive in this story so as far as any writing from me goes in the ahb! universe,, regulus will be dead

I do not have the time or brainpower to go into it in detail tonight because it's part of a much longer essay I've been trying to string together for ages but.
Someday, I need people to understand that everything you think you know about the infamous "Batman and Robin are gay" section of Seduction of the Innocent is wrong. It's not about sex. There's not a single implication that the comics depicted or even implied a sexual relationship. And it's not some out-there interpretation that Fredrick Wertham pulled out of his ass because he was some weird, paranoid conservative weirdo.
It came from his patients. His gay patients. Gay men and boys who described, in interviews with Wertham and other psychiatrists, how they discovered their sexuality by reading comic books and finding themselves attracted to the idealized depictions of masculinity depicted therein.
With Batman and Robin specifically, the focus is entirely on their emotional bond, the way they care about and constantly look out for each other. There's a quote from one of the patients that starts with, "I think I saw myself as Robin," and ends with, "I thought I would like to be loved by someone like Batman or Superman" that's stuck with me for years.
Mind, this is still framed as a not-good thing, because this book came out in 1954 and homosexuality was still pathologized... but it's always stood out to me that Wertham is not the one going, "Ewww, the icky gays got their gay in my superheroes, so immoral, get it away." That was the mainstream audience's reaction to being told that some gay people were fantasizing about being in a safe, happy, and loving relationship based on that of a superhero duo.
