Near Trælanípa by Zeb Andrews Via Flickr: In my previous post I was writing about the mental process I went through deciding whether to bring my Hasselblad or my Pentax 67 to the Faroe Islands. (Spoiler alert - I brought both). While those cameras do share some overlap I also packed them along with very different purposes in mind. Among other things, my Hasselblad is my long exposure camera. It has no need of batteries so there is no worry over battery drain while doing long exposure work. Plus my Pentax 67 is prone to some type of occasional internal flaring during these long exposures that happens just often enough to make me not trust it enough for such journeys. Anyway, this is one of the images I made in the Faroes with my Hasselblad where it was fulfilling its purpose quite nicely. I will add though that these islands are windy. I love wind. It is one of my favorite weathers. But by the time I had left here I had had my fill of wind for some time. Since I had opted to travel with just carry-on luggage I had left my large Manfrotto tripod at home and took a lightweight travel tripod instead. Normally it works just fine, but it would never be my first choice for holding a camera stable in a wind storm for long exposure work. During my stay in the Faroes I did a lot of long exposure work with this tripod and spent a lot of time huddled protectively over and around the setup like a mother bird, trying my best to shelter the camera from being buffeted by the ever-present winds. I was a bit nervous coming home not sure how many images would be lost to camera shake. I must be better at being a windbreak than I had given myself credit for as I didn't notice any images lost to blurriness. Anyway, I will have more to say about that wind in a later post.

- A noi stessi - risposi.

The thing about fictional languages is that they are always going to be incomplete in ways that just completely ruin them for me. They're always going to be missing words that are so fundamental to humanity that I cannot comprehend leaving them out. High Valyrian doesn't have any canon word for grandparents. No word for grandmother or grandfather. Nothing. Finding that out just completely killed any interest I had in learning it.
Saw this post in the asoiaf tag and I'm just like ??? I mean, I have my own issues with High Valyrian, but this is not at all true.
Muñāzma (paternal grandmother, lit. "great mother")
Mumuña (maternal grandmother, lit. "mother's mother")
Kekepa (paternal grandfather, lit. "father's father")
Kepāzma (maternal grandfather, lit. "great father")
They might not be in duolingo or wherever, but they're definitely on HV's wiki. Along with many other names for relatives, as would be expected for a fictional language for a family so focused on legacy. Among many, many other words. Pretty decent for a language that started with just five words by GRRM (and a bunch of names).
Also, High Valyrian is an active conlang -- that is, it's literally being created right now as David J. Peterson translates dialogue for HOTD's scripts for upcoming seasons. Which may be the source of some the OP's issues, I suppose? HV wasn't initially intended to be a language for life, it's a language created to tell a specific story. Albeit a story that has recently shifted to be much more about Valyrian life, and thus the language has grown accordingly. But it is a constructed language and not a natural one (despite strong attempts to make it feel natural), and its duolingo is sold to fans to help pay for less popular but actually necessary languages, so yeah, it should really only be learned for fun, and if you're not having fun, welp.
But heck, if anyone needs a word you can't find on the wiki, especially one you think should fundamentally exist, you can just ask. DJP's back on tumblr now (with an open ask box), or there's his AO3 (where he responds to comments), or elsewhere. There's also a fairly active HV reddit (and from a brief glance, looks like people sometimes coin words on request). So if High Valyrian is a language you want to learn, for fun or to study a conlang or just for fanfic purposes, hope this helps!
