*Black vet on regrets of joining and inspiring his kid to join.
"You were a hero."
'A hero? Oh, shit. You know they awarded the medal of honor for that prison escape? But they didn't give that medal to me! A lilly white boy from Kentucky got that. All I got was a medical discharge and a lifetime of fighting the VA for my medical benefits. I wanted more than that for you. Your mother wanted more than that for you.'
"...I know."

"14th of Torenheart, 1889
Citrinne, Seinne and I near the Sovereign Valley Excavation Site. Seinne insisted she come along, even though I told her how dangerous it was. Bright-eyed as always, that one.
I just know the "mythical" Vetaran Kingdom is anything but. Too many pieces of evidence in this region alone point to that civilization being as real as the day is long. The worker boys were pitching a fit but I gave them a little pep talk. Might have been too hard on them though, saw one crying afterwards. Either way, I hope to uncover something soon."

Veda: So you're telling me it's a coincidence that, within the span of two days, I meet a Khajit from Elswyr who gives me a staff and is assassinated by a Thalmor agent, and now suddenly the literal heir to the Thalmor throne is in Solitude claiming to want to aid me.
Caryalind: Yes! I swear this is all just a huge misunderstanding, please!
Flit: *frantic beeping, floating in front of Caryalind, facing Veda*
Veda: You think he's telling the truth?
Flit: *agreeing beeps*
Veda: *sigh*.. Where's Kaidan?
Lucien: Guarding the outside in case anything happens.
Veda: Gods above, he's going to be pissed. Fine. *pulling the dagger away from Caryalind* You get one chance, Thallery. Any funny business and your ass is getting sent back to the dominion in a box.
Caryalind: Duly noted. I can promise it won't come to that.
Veda: Good. Let's go introduce you to everyone else. *walking away*
Caryalind: She's.. rather scary, isn't she?
Lucien: You have no idea. In any case, it's a pleasure to have you on board, Caryalind! My name is Lucien Flavius!
Caryalind: As in the researcher Flavius? And the war vetaran? Your family name carries some weight in Cryodil, as I understand.
Lucien: Ahaaa, yes, that would be my father and mother. I, erm.. I do hope the Aldmeri Dominion doesn't.. think of our name as a negative weight?
Caryalind: By all means, my father finds your family relatively harmless, at the moment. You've nothing to fear, if that's what you mean.
Lucien: Oh.. oh good. Brilliant, even! I'm sure we'll get along just fine, then!
Caryalind: I hope we do. Who exactly is this Kaidan that Veda mentioned-?
Kaidan: *from outside* WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN THE THALMOR-?!
Lucien: That would be Kaidan!
Caryalind: Oh dear..

It's About Control: Tackling the Question of Abortion
Video here: https://youtu.be/jRF2iLE1m3U
After the overturning of Roe v. Wade, numerous anti-abortion and anti-reproductive rights bills have been brought to national and state legislature. I wanted to spend some time talking about reproductive rights, going through some of the common arguments that anti-woman, pro life people talk about in relation to abortion.
I think talking about whether life begins at conception or at birth is almost besides the point, because I find that the line you draw for that is hard to argue someone on, so although I might make mention of my reasoning on this, I don’t want this to be the focus on it. I find that a lot of folks come to their conclusion about abortion first and then decide the humanity of the fetus afterwards to support their point.
A lot of folks who oppose abortion, besides talking about the humanity of the fetus, overstate the importance of the fetus compared to the woman. If a fetus is a person, and the woman is a person, why do we make such a big deal about saving the fetus over the woman in situations where the pregnancy could lead to the death or severe injury of the woman? In situations where the pregnancy is not life threatening, why do we not offer government services to help all mothers with their newborn children? Although I am extremely pro choice, banning abortion would be a lot more defensible to me if we had services that helped mothers take care of their child, like free classes on how to raise a child/take care of a baby, baby-caring supplies provided to the mother at no cost, and even further down the line, better schools for all children, so the mother (and broadly, the parents) can rest assured that, whether the baby was planned or not, the child will have a much higher chance of having a good life, regardless of the mother’s personal financial situation. It is odd to me that we talk about children as if they are so precious and necessary to defend, but don’t actually do anything for them. The rhetoric shares some parallels with our vetarans. But, that’s a little off topic.
We’re talking about the unborn. Oftentimes, pro life folks like to ignore cases of sexual assault when talking about abortion. So, is it fair for a man to force a woman to take care of a person for 9 months and then 18 more years, when, in the case of a man assaulting a woman, it is the man who instigated the pregnancy, and is ultimately the most responsible for it, but it is the woman who actually has to deal with the consequences of the pregnancy. Maybe some of the more degenerate members of the right wing would talk about how in those cases the woman did something to provoke the assault. I think when they say things like this, they completely take away the agency of the man in this scenario. The man does the assault. The man is not a mindless robot, he makes decisions just like the rest of us, and in that moment, he decided to interpret the woman’s actions as a provocation to conduct the assault, but also decided to ignore any signs of the woman resisting. This is therefore deliberate, and those ignoring cases of abortion in situations like this are making a choice to prioritize a man over a woman, much like they seem to also prioritize a fetus over a woman.
Let’s take the least emotionally charged situation of all of these unwanted baby scenarios. Simply consensual sex that leads to an unwanted pregnancy, no complications. Where do we go from here? Does the unborn baby have a say in the mother’s decision to keep them? Note that in this situation, the fetus came into existence by sheer chance, foisted upon the mother without her consent. Although the sex was consensual, pregnancy was not. Sex might result in pregnancy, but in that same sense, eating food might result in food poisoning and driving a car recklessly might result in crashing. The difference between these unwanted consequences and the consequence of pregnancy from sex is that pregnancy can be terminated, the consequence can be reversed, and if an unwanted pregnancy is not reversed, the consequence of having a child is quite hefty if the child is unwanted.
Then why draw the line at the birth of a child? Well, it’s easy. The birth of a child is when the fetus is certainly viable outside of the womb, when the mother develops an actual attachment to the child, a chemical attachment and bond that is biologically programmed into mothers. Attachment, or love more broadly, is what gives someone personhood more than anything else. If the mother was attached to the child before it was born, abortion wouldn’t really be in question here. And if that’s not enough, the child is not reliant on the mother in the same sense as it was before, the burden of raising the child can be transferred very easily. There is a deeper conversation here about the awful foster care system, but I think that is out of scope of the video.
I find that most of the ambiguities of the arguments I’ve posed in this video don’t come from actual issues with my reasoning, but instead the pro-life folks’ attempts to make the process of pregnancy, birth, and the raising of a child more complicated than it needs to be. Birth control, if widely available and easily accessible to all economic classes, would eliminate the need for most abortions. In the event that birth control fails, the pregnant person can opt for an abortion as needed as soon as they find out they are pregnant, and any of the emotionally charged language behind “killing a baby” would be gone because, well, the clump of cells that will grow into a baby would look nothing like a baby. Educating people on what it means to be a parent, how to prevent pregnancy when they don’t want to have a child, and informing them of the last resort option of abortion would make the issue clean cut: if you want to have a child, here is how you do it, if you don’t here is how you can still have sex without having a child.
