Summary: One of the Bridgertons calls on Penelope, and a secret is spilt.

A knock on his chamber door alerted Colin to the outside world, when he allowed the person on the other side entrance, standing there looking at him was Violet.

"Colin, what's the matter dearest? You've missed breakfast, and you came home early from the ball last night," she wondered.

At the sheer mention of last night's ball, Colin very nearly burst into tears. He started sniffing.

"Colin?" She hurries over to his bedside, as Colin curls in on himself. "What happened last night? You came home after you went outside after you spoke to Penelope."

"She heard me," Colin said, holding a yellow pillow close to his chest. "At her family's ball, she heard me."

"Oh, Colin," Violet reached her hand and started running her hand through his hair. "I'm so sorry, my darling boy."

Colin had cried himself back to sleep, and Violet headed downstairs to see Anthony and Kate reading over the race results in the overstuffed chair in the drawing room.

"Anthony, can you wait here? I need to speak to Penelope," Violet said, finishing off her cup of tea.

Anthony gave his mother a nod, despite him being Lord Bridgeton, he would always obey whatever his mother would tell him.

"Why are going to visit Penelope?" Kate asked, running her fingers through the hair at the nape of Anthony's neck.

"Colin has messed everything up. Penelope overheard him last season. He has fallen back asleep, he has missed breakfast, and he has told me he adores Penelope. I'm going to sort this out before it slips through his fingers," Violet says.

Anthony nods, knowing what it feels like to nearly lose the love of your life. He lashed out at everyone whilst Kate was unconscious, and Colin was hurting over the thought of losing Penelope forever.

"The Dowager Viscountess Bridgerton to see Miss Penelope," Ludders introduced, and Portia motioned for him to let Violet in.

"My Lady," Portia bobbed, and Penelope nodded her head.

Violet waited until the door shut behind her. "May I speak to Penelope, please? Alone?"

Portia blinked repeatedly. "Erm, of course," Portia walked over to the door and left the green drawing room. Leaving Penelope and Violet.

"What can I do for you, Mrs. Bridgerton?" Penelope asked, getting up from the long chair by the window, and putting her book down.

"Oh Penelope, I have told you to call me Violet," she says sitting on one sofa as Penelope takes the sofa opposite.

Penelope nods, she knew Violet was coming here with a purpose. Violet Bridgerton always came with a purpose.

Violet let out a sigh and then spoke. "Colin told me what happened last night."

Penelope shook her head, got up from her spot and walked over to the window. "Then you know what he said to me the night of my family's ball last season."

Violet got up from her spot and walked over to Penelope's side. "Penelope, darling. He feels terrible. After you spoke yesterday, he went straight home. He went straight to bed and hasn't moved since. He missed breakfast," Violet says, making Penelope look at her with surprise.

"Colin loves food."

Violet wraps an arm around her shoulder. "I believe he loves you more."

Penelope shook her head. "He doesn't. Colin doesn't love me, he never has. If he did, he never would have gotten himself engaged to Marina, he never would have said what he did last season."

Violet knew there was no altering Penelope's mind. "Ok, Penelope. But, when Colin speaks to you and lays his heart in front of you, please listen to him?" She asks.

Penelope nodded, turning her head from Violet and to Bridgerton House across the street. She saw Eloise sitting in the Bridgeton drawing room, she knew Eloise wouldn't look over at her.

"Now, what is happening with yourself and Eloise?" She asked, and it made Penelope drop her head and very nearly cry.

Penelope didn't know if she was going to tell Violet the truth, because Penelope knew her surrogate mother would never look at her the same way ever again. But she trusted Violet more than her mother. She knew Violet would be able to come up with a plan to help her make it up to Eloise.

She let out a heavy sigh. "Penelope? Whatever's the matter?"

"It's me," she tells her. "I'm Lady Whistledown."

Violet looked at Penelope with surprise. Penelope was the last person she expected to be Lady Whistledown. "It's you?" She whispers, making sure she was still holding onto Penelope's hand and she collapsed into the lounge chair.

"I'm sorry, Lady Bridgerton," Penelope said, removing her hand from Violet's grip.

"Penelope, Penelope, darling," Violet said, reaching for the young woman she has always considered her fifth Bridgerton daughter. "You have punished your family with nearly every issue. Especially with Miss Thompson."

"Marina planned on trapping Colin in a loveless marriage and would nearly pass off her twins as his," Penelope explains, and Violet nodded. The older woman knew that Penelope always did everything with other people's interests at heart. "I had already spoken to Colin to get him to see what she was doing, but he wouldn't listen to me, I had to resort to Lady Whistledown."

Violet nodded again, reaching over for Penelope and making sure the youngest Featherington was sitting next to her. "What happened with Eloise?"

Penelope nearly collapsed in on herself. "I had to do it. The Queen was becoming suspicious of Eloise. I had to do something to throw her off."

And with that, Penelope burst into tears.

"Oh, Penelope," Violet said, wrapping her arms around Penelope. She looked out the window and saw Eloise stood by the window with furrowed eyebrows.

Please let show-Colin be like book-Colin, implying to Violet & Portia that he & Penelope have been sleeping together for a while so they’ll let him bump up the wedding date because he’s in love & doesn’t want to wait a month to marry Pen.

I need a scene where both their mothers are horrified & having flashbacks of different times they remember seeing Penelope & Colin together. Violet thought back to watching her son walk away from dancing with Cressida Cowper and immediately taking Penelope by the hand in front of the entire party and walking her out of the ballroom for some time before they returned to dance together. Portia recalls Colin leaving Featherington house when she hadn’t even known he was there & then she found the two of them alone behind closed doors at their family’s ball.

Both mothers are mortified at their children’s behavior and fanning themselves, they agree and immediately begin modifying wedding plans desperate to change the subject.

„One of those days you will get us both in trouble, Eloise.”

Due to some miracle, Y/N and her second-in-age sister in law managed to escape the watchful gaze of all, lady Danburry, Violet and Daphne, and rushed forward on the promenade. It was generally frowned upon, that the married lady strolled in the presence of a girl, who wasn’t even a débutante yet, but neither of those two seemed to take much interest in ton’s opinion.

“Trouble from merely speaking the truth?”

“Shall I remind you that this virtue is long forgotten in the society full of hypocrisy and deceit?” Y/N whispered taking Eloise’s arm to at least keep the pretences of being discreet. It would be unwise to let anyone else eavesdrop on the little exchange of words between close friends.

“It’s almost like you don’t trust me, my dear sister-in-law.” Eloise chuckled feigning the pompous tone.

“Please don’t ever call me like that again. You were my friend before you were my family. Don’t put the distance between us now. ”

“If anything I’d dare say I’m the reason you met with Anthony and –“ the sentence was cut out abruptly, as Eloise realised that Y/N was currently in the middle of a heavy argument with her husband. An argument that made her flee the house and turned out on the doorstep on the other Bridgerton’s house announced, in search for a friendly soul to talk to. And now she actually realised that all that may have been her fault from the beginning. If Y/N and Anthony have never met, they never would have fought and never—

“Stop overthinking it, dear.” The current viscountess chuckled observing her friend’s slightly hazy gaze and recognising it instantly. Clearly Eloise was getting lost in her own head.

‘Do not call me that!” the girl’s eyes became sharp and conscious again “I can hardly stand being called that affectionately by my mother, let alone by you.”

“Worked just as planned though.”

“Well, my biggest congratulations on being effective in the matter. You are almost as good at me with it.”

“Oh, almost? From what I can recollect I taught you most of those tricks.” Y/N smiled brightly.

“Really?” Eloise raised an eyebrow “I can’t remember. Hey what do you say we run away from our chaperones and have a proper, meaningful discussion on what’s troubling you?”

“I wish it was that easy. But I’m a wife now and apparently –“

“Viscountess Bridgerton!” a sudden voice came from in front of them and Y/N felt like actually taking Eloise advice and rushing off. It was almost like the whole world decided to prey on her misery on that particular day. First lady Danburry, now lady Featherington. “How lovely to see you! Marriage serves you well. You are beaming, dear.”

Y/N gritted her teeth in hardly hidden annoyance at such obvious show of nosiness and lack of tact. She knew instantly that she had to cut the conversation short before another wave of unwanted questions about her blessed (or not) state would come.

‘Lady Featherington. Pleasure to see you there. Are your daughters accompanying you or are they occupied with their upcoming prenuptial agreements? I surely hope they would be as fortunate with their future husbands as I am with mine. And speaking of which, if you excuse me, I need to discuss a very urgent matter on the subject with my family.”She put an emphasis on two last word and not waiting for response, abandoning all the rules of the lady behaviour, tried to drag Eloise away almost sighing deeply in frustration.

„Oh, but viscountess, once Penelope weds Colin, we will be a family.” lady Featherington stopped both girls in their tracks before they managed to escape.

„I beg your pardon, what now?”

‘Oh, you didn’t know, viscountess? Your brother-in-law is about to marry my youngest daughter. By some miracle, clearly, since Penelope--” Portia started rambling without a care in the world.

„Oh I know about that part.” Y/N faked a smile that didn’t reach her eyes „I merely have the deep conviction that us becoming family is rather an improbable claim.”

„But--”

„Dearest lady Featherington, do not push my hand here. I would rather stay in amity with you. A very fragile alliance shall you pry into my private matters. I dare say you have a certain interest in using those bold statements? ”

„I beg your pardon?”

„The viscount, is still in the charge of his famliy’s - our family’s finances. And that shall include the future fortune of Colin. Shall you insist on intruding me during my leisure time I might have a word with my husband.”

„You truly do not disgrace yourself with being modest, do you, Y/N? Has social advancement changed you so much? I clearly remember you being a scrawny child with no aspiration and position and look at you now. A snake in a sparkish dress.”

„She can at least choose the colour that highlights her beauty and doesn't make her look like--”

„Thank you Eloise.” Y/N cut her off before she could cause some more havoc. Lady Featherington was an onerousness but her gossiping nature was something Y/N did not need in the current situation. „I shall believe lady Portia will keep our little conversation in mind for the future purposes. Hers and her daughter’s.

„Actually if the viscount is around --”

„Unfortunately, matters of utmost importance kept him at home today.” Y/N responded with the most patience she could gather at the moment. There was always a possibility of farewelling the unwanted company, but as previously stated - there was no need of spreading the rumours of some discrepancies between the newlyweds. This hydra had to be beheaded immediately before the news spread throughout London.

„Such a shame you were left to tend for yourself then viscountess.”

„I shall believe I’d receive the most warm welcome back once my husband free himself of all the duties and occupations.”

While Y/N was having a lively discussion with indefatigable Portia Featherington, someone was observing her closely from behind the tree, staying unnoticed themselves.

“Are you spying on her now?”

“I’m not spying!”

“Oh really? Then tell me brother, why on Earth would you hide in the bush instead of accompanying your wife on the promenade? If I were you –“

“Good thing you are not.” Anthony muttered grumpily keeping his eyes fixed on his wife’s silhouette. Even with her cheeks reddened from the indignation and eyes sparkling with cunning intelligence she was the most beautiful woman he has ever laid his eyes on. If anything, those characteristic may have only been adding to her charm.

he viscount may not have heard all the words exchanged between two ladies, but the way Y/N was keeping lady Portia at bay, standing her own ground and not wavering in the slightest was admirable and worthy of a viscountess. Serving as a reminder that his wife was not a fragile bird who was - in his opinion- in dire need of his protection and care, but rather a capable, strong woman, who would survive on her own.

Which brought him to another conclusion - that she didn’t rely on him as much as he expected her to. That she was proud enough to get the audacity to leave his home, leave him and decided (solely by herself!) to pay a visit to his sister.

“If I were you—“ Benedict grinned mischievously “I would run and drag Y/N away from Eloise before those two officially call you an idiot and make a plan for Y/N to leave you for good.” apparently the second son was capable of reading his older brother’s mind and pointing out all the worries that were already inside viscount’s head

“She would never.”

“I am unaware of the scope of your failure, but given the fact your wife rushed to Eloise, out of all the people must have been immense.”

“That’s it!’ Anthony hissed, almost crawling out from behind the tree, ready to clear this misunderstanding immediately.

„Oh, my dear!” Lady Featherington placed her hands on her hips as if she wanted to emphasize her higher position and knowledge of male-female relations. „Do not occupy yourself with the romance fantasies. Courtship is gone once the knot is tied. And after a child is born--” her gaze landed on Y/N’s stomach „you put all the efforts into keeping the family afloat and secure the future of the offspring.”

„I believe--”

„Viscountess, you are so young. So naive and innocent. Fed on the novels and stories.”

„Most of which cover the topic of history, literature and medicine rather than Shakespeare plays.” now the young woman was getting angry her cheeks flushing „topics which I boldly presume are far from your interest.”

„I beg your-”

„I kindly forgive you, lady Featherington. Now if you excuse us - I shall wish you a good day.”

„I am not--”

„Lady Featherington.”

The sudden deep voice coming from behind made all the ladies turn around at once.

„Viscount.” Portia bowed slightly „I was just having a little chat with your wife.”

„Educating her on the specificity of marital relations?”

„Giving her some of the knowledge that her prematurely deceased mother - God rest her soul - did not have the opportunity to teach her”

„How kind of you.” Anthony almost smirked and Y/N had to muffle the chuckle forming in the back of her throat looking down. It was like she saw the old him. „However I suppose that once I am here, you shall be free of your educative duties?”

„I--”

„do not preoccupy yourself my lady. My wife shall not lack the company from now on.” having said that, Antony walked right to Y/N offering her an arm and - a sight truly unexpected - bid the older lady goodbye while leading the viscountess away.

„I didn’t need you to save me.”

„such a shame I happened to be around then.”

„My undoing indeed.”

„Unforunate event that you might have to keep the externals for the duration of a stroll.” Anthony held her tighter and closer to him while nodding head to the acquaintance.

„Did you gather some intel on the current situation of our brother and his lovely wife?” Benedict, who followed the two of them without any hesitation, asked Eloise.

„I am Y/N’s confidante, I shall never-”

„You cannot trick me sister.”

„Anthony is an idiot.”

„I had quite a feeling you would say something like that. Now- shall we interfere or remain passive observers as Antony makes a fool of himself begging for her forgiveness?”

Eloise smirked as they continued their following.

She and Benedict always understood each other without words.

Chapter 1: a visit

Sage

Sage stepped off the bus from Portia as a cloud of dust floated up into the air and she reeled back breathing it in, eyes watering and nose tickling. She sneezed into her sleeve and reopened her burning eyes to be greeted by Logan. Taller than her by at least half a foot, and eyes as blue as the oasis, Sage understood why her twin sister was immediately magnetized to the man the day she saw him. On a wanted poster no less. It still made Sage chuckle to this day.

Logan stole her suitcase right out of her hand and beamed at her.

“Where’s Violet?” She asked.

“I’ll give you one guess.”

“You need to make her take days off.”

“You think I can make her do anything? She’s as stubborn as a boxing jack. Worse actually.”

Sage sighed. “Yes. She is.”

“She says you ain’t much different.”

“Perhaps. But have you considered there is a reason she gets that first place trophy every year?”

��She told me once, that you let her win.”

“I’m here to tell you she’s lying.”

Logan chuckled at that while curling his hand around his belt buckle. “Well, come on, maybe once she sees you, she’ll realize her commissions can wait.”

“I do admire your optimism,” Sage said as she trailed after Logan.

It was just a short stretch to walk from the bus stop to Violet’s workshop. But it was enough for Sage to realize she’s over dressed, roasting under her long sleeved shirt with a matching belted harness and cape. Her trousers were loose at least, and laced boots knee high to keep all the sand out. But every piece of her outfit was too much black for a desert sun. She mumbled an almost inaudible incantation to keep herself cool while lagging behind Logan’s long-legged stride, hoping he hadn’t noticed. Though, the man probably knew their family secret. Still, better to be safe.

“Does my sister have to run to keep up with you?” Sage commented when they arrived at the gate.

She steadied herself on the fence to catch her breath and wished she would’ve kept up her training with Arlo the past year.

Logan laughed. “I have to run to keep up with her!”

He held the gate open and Sage peeled herself off the fence to follow him into the yard. Somehow she believed that what Logan said was true. Violet was always flitting about like a bee, buzzing along to her next task. Veering to the right, past the stables, Sage spotted her sister slouched over, painting steady strokes of blue onto some flower boxes. Her white shirt sleeves were rolled up to her muscled shoulders, sweat shining in rivulets that trailed down her tanned triceps. Sage was similar in build, though she’d been kissed more delicately by Portia’s summer sun, her freckles less prominent.

“Hey Darlin’, look who’s here,” Logan said.

Violet glanced up from her work, her dark blue locks pulled back into a thick braid while a few strands framed her face, her grin spreading wide as the bright sunlight glinted off her nose ring. The brightness almost obscured the freckles that dusted her nose and apples of her cheeks. She set the box aside, wiping her hands on her red and white striped work apron and threw her arms around Sage. She wrapped her sister up in a long, overdue hug and squeezed. When they finally parted, a string of half dried paint clung to her shirt and Violet swept it away with a chuckle.

“You want to take a tour of the town?” Violet asked. I need the paint to dry on those boxes so might as well give you the lay of the land.” She plucked her leather work gloves off and pocketed them in the front of her apron.

“You act like I’ve never been here before.”

“A weekend at the Blue Moon Saloon and the church, mostly cluttering up your schedule with wedding duties is hardly what I’d call getting a feel for Sandrock. Besides, Mi-an, Wei and I have spruced up so much more since you were here last month.”

“Very well, show me your pride and joy,” Sage said with a smile and Violet clapped enthusiastically.

Violet practically vibrated with joy. “You’re gonna love our little town, Sage. Can’t wait to show you around. Maybe I can even convince you to move here, yet.”

The valley stretched as far as her eyes could see but Sage’s drifted up to the sky. Inside the tram cart, she imagined herself flying and free. The way the fluffy clouds swirled on the horizon, soaking up the sun's rays and glowing in orange, with ruffles of purple, made her wish she had wings. She was ready to float on air after a day of endless introductions and small talk.

“It’s gorgeous up here.” She dangled her arms over the side of the cart and watched a bird flit across the sky and disappear behind a distant peak.

“It is,” Violet replied from beside her with a little sigh.

“Can’t believe you built this.”

“Me neither. I didn’t do it alone though,” she continued. “The Sandrockers are just always working together to pull through for me. They’re good people. Real good.”

“They are. The way you talk about this place, plus the views and the warmth of the people—makes me want to leave my old life behind and live here.”

“So why don’t you?”

“Because—well, Vi.” There was only one reason really but she didn’t know how to say it. “I just can’t.”

“You can. You’ve told me time and time again how you’ve never wanted to be a builder. So, why don’t you stop holdin’ yourself back and start working toward your future? Logan and I would be more than willing to get you settled in here.”

“You would?” Sage cocked her head sideways at her sister.

“Of course.” She grinned while throwing her arm around Sage’s shoulder. “Plus you know me, I always want you around. It would be so nice to have you here in Sandrock. You could come with me to Saturday night story time with Owen and Sunday fireside meetin’s that always end up with a little party back at my place and—”

Violet launched into a speech of activities to participate in together as Sage turned back to the view. The sun sunk halfway below the horizon, brushing the sky with hues of pink and orange that had her believing her sister's words. She could move to Sandrock. Minus all those activities she was planning.

There was nothing holding her back. Well, nothing except her misplaced hope that he might return.

Sage pulled fresh rolls from the oven and slid the tray on top of the stove. The savory scent of caramelized onion and garlic she added to the dough before it baked filled her nose and her stomach rumbled.

“That smells heavenly,” Violet told her in a sing-song voice and then the doorbell rang.

“Did you invite someone over for dinner?” Sage asked.

“I sure did. But it’s a surprise so you’ll just have to wait and see.”

“This better not be a blind date. You know I’m not ready. I didn’t come here for that.”

Violet booped her nose and chuckled. “Not a date. I promise. He’s a friend and I just think you’d get along. He’s quiet. More than you, even. But he’s real kind.” She hurried towards the door but stopped in the frame and glanced back over her shoulder. “But it wouldn’t hurt to put the feelers out.”

Sage inhaled deeply to keep from shouting at her sister and turned back to the rolls. Violet disappeared and Sage reminded herself that her sister’s intentions came from a good place. Sweet even. Another deep breath and she noted that the tops were perfectly browned and ready to serve and smiled to herself with pride. She dug around in the cupboards for a basket to put them in and spotted one high up on the refrigerator and climbed the counter, stretching herself across the small gap. The tops of her fingers curled around the basket. She teetered but regained her balance, snatching the basket and clenching it against her chest, she crouched down and then jumped to the floor.

She busied herself with setting the table and then stirred the stewed mushrooms on the stovetop. Adding just a hint of extra cilantro, she left them to simmer a tad more while tossing the alfalfa salad with a few extra fresh veggies and a light vinaigrette. She set the salad bowl on the table with tongs and returned to the stovetop just as her sister ushered in the most beautiful man with blue eyes and long silken black hair she’s ever laid eyes on. He was nearly as tall as Logan but much more slight, dressed in a simple white button up and slightly tattered trousers, she gathered before averting her gaze. It’s rude to stare, she reminded herself.

“Sage, I want you to meet Doctor Fang,” Violet said.

The name sounded so familiar but she couldn’t quite place where she’d heard it before. She raised her hand in a small greeting. An awkward wave. “Hi,” she said.

Doctor Fang’s expression was unreadable as his eyes fell on her. A raven suddenly swooped in from behind him and landed on his shoulder. It whistled then said, “Pretty bird! Who’s this?”

“It’s—the builder’s sister,” Doctor Fang said in the softest, most comforting voice Sage had ever heard. She wanted to wrap herself up in it like a cozy blanket and fall asleep under the stars.

Picking her jaw up off the floor, Sage blinked. “That’s right. I’m Vi’s sister, Sage” she said to the bird.

“This is—X,” said Doctor Fang.

“Well it is a pleasure to meet you, X.” She offered a small smile. “And you, Doctor Fang.”

“Now that we’ve got all the introductions out of the way,” Violet clapped excitedly, “let’s have a seat, dig in and eat!”

Sage slid into the chair next to her sister and filled her plate with salad and then buttered her roll liberally, delighting in the way the softness just melted in her mouth as she took a bite. Meanwhile Violet told a story about her most recent adventure. Something about trying to collect cactus flowers for Doctor Fang when a boxing jack (which Sage had heard about plenty of times but fortunately had never come across) knocked her on her ass. Thankfully Logan had been at his outpost and spotted her in time to assist. Violet and Logan took turns telling the story of his heroic save and Sage listened while filling her stomach with the delicious foods on the table. By the end of their storytelling, Sage was done eating and collected her dirty dish from the table. She didn’t learn a thing about Doctor Fang because he barely said a word. Not like he could really get a word in edgewise anyway.

Eventually Logan and Violet dropped their plates in the sink and she was surprised when the Doctor joined her, drying the dishes she'd set in the drying rack.

“The rolls—did you make them?” He asked as he pulled open the cupboard, stacking the plates he'd dried.

“Yes,” she replied.

“They were very—good.”

“Thank you,” she said as she worked at cleaning the pot next.

She bit down on her lip while she scrubbed, channeling all her focus into cleaning. She almost forgot that Doctor Fang was with her and that she’d left him in silence for a decent length of time. But she only had one dish left.

Sage wiped the last dish clean and handed it to Doctor Fang. The walls shook and there was a low groan that

filtered through the floorboards as she briefly grazed his long fingers in the dish exchange. Flushing red, she muttered an apology. But Fang acted like it was nothing.

“I must—return home,” he said as another moan, much louder and longer than before, washed over them.

Sage refused to be left in the house with her sister and Logan, so at the risk of sounding desperate she asked, “can I please walk you home?” She cringed.

“Yes,” he stated simply, unaffected by the sounds going on around them. Or at least appearing not to be anyway.

Sage wished she had half his decorum.

“Thank you,” she breathed, following after him as he made his way toward the door.

The cool air washed over her as she sighed with relief, easily keeping pace with the Doctor as he led the way to his home in the night.

“You live in the clinic?” She asked once he stopped just outside the door, one hand pushing on it, letting the light spill out, grazing the top curve of her black boots.

“Yes,” he said simply. One foot was in the doorway, the other with her.

She wasn’t sure if he was waiting for her to go or for her to come in. Each minute passed made her second guessing worse.

“Come in!” Squawked X. “Don’t be shy! Shy!”

“X! Be quiet,” Doctor Fang said softly.

Sage took that as a sign.

“Wanna go back?” X squawked again.

Sage stared at the two of them a bit baffled. “Not particularly. I need to find something else to do while—” she hesitated. There was no need for an explanation. He was a stranger. They owed nothing to each other. “I hope you two have a good night,” she said instead and turned around.

“Thank you.” Fang’s words were a whisper of a hand on her shoulder but as she glanced back, the door clicked shut as the clinic bathed her in its warm red lighting.

Sage knew she couldn’t go back to her sisters just yet and she didn’t want to go to the Saloon. There was just too much noise and brightness there and she was far too exhausted from the day. She wandered over to the bench, situated between the clinic and the Golden Goose, and took a page out of her good friend Mint’s book. Curling up with one arm under her head as a pillow, she closed her eyes and let sleep take her.

But it wasn’t long before she dreamt of the Rogue Knight again. He had pinned her to the ground, his sword at her chest and his laughter echoed as his mask melted away. The kind brown eyes of a betrothed betrayer mocked her. She thrashed and glanced away, not wanting to see the face behind the mask. Pain rippled through her nerves as the edge of his blade tore through her clothes and nicked her skin. Then he plunged it deep. A sharp intake of breath and she threw her eyes open, jolting upright. Five years gone and she hated the hold he had on her even after all this time.

X was pecking at her shirt and she didn’t mean to swat at him. “Wanna go back!” He was shouting over and over as she came to, blinking. It was still night.

She sat up and X landed on the shoulder of Doctor Fang. “Are you okay?” He asked.

“Yeah. I just—I had a nightmare. I’m sorry.”

Doctor Fang stared at her, tilting his head quizzically then turned away. He gestured for her to follow. “Come with me.”

"How weird seeing you here, Doctor Devorak" Asra sarcastically hummed upon seeing his long-time friend nestled in his favorite chair in the Rowdy Raven.

"I can say the same about you, Asra" The doctor raised his face to look up at the magician, giving him a slight smirk.

"Are you waiting on Portia? Or maybe.. someone else?" The magician teased Julian about his almost non-existent romantic life, but as he said it, an unknown feeling of jealousy spread throughout his chest.

"No, just me tonight-"

"Great!" Asra didn't even ask whether he could slide in the chair next to him, but he knew Julian wouldn't mind. Yeah, sure, they snickered and bickered, but both of them silently agreed they loved each others company.

The ginger didn't move an inch, staring right into Asra's sea-deep violet eyes.

"Julian?" Upon noticing this, Asra practically purred his friend's name, never missing a good chance to tease.

"Hm?" The doctor simply hummed, way too tired and drunk to form words.

"Do I have something on my face for you to be staring like that? If I didn't know you, Devorak, I'd guess you were admiring me~" Every his word was meant to raise embarassed blush in Julian's cheeks. However, that surprisingly didn't happen. He only started chuckling sweetly, placing his hand on top of his mouth.

Asra liked that. It was cute, in a way. Oh god, did he just think that Julian was cute?!

"No, Alnazar, you certainly don't. You're just- Your eyes are just- Damn it, Asra, have your eyes always been that pretty?"

Even though it could've just been the ungodly amount of alcohol he drank talking (since Julian was never bold like this), Asra was practically floored.

No, this wasn't how their little teasing game would go - Asra was the one who teased, and then Julian would blush and deny it. No, this was never supposed to happen. It wasn't fair. Shit, it was so unfair! Julian wasn't supposed to be that smooth and kind, he wasn't supposed to look that cute with that slight tint in his pale cheeks and with his aburn locks furrowed!

These kinds of feeling- Were they here all along, and Asra was too blind to notice them? Or did they spring up just now?

Have Julian's eyes always been so pretty?

Helloooo so I have this question. Are you going to explore Polin's obsession with eachother from an outside perspective? more umportantly Colin's obsessiveness because speaking as someone who would be labeled a wallflower if I were to live in ye old England, wanting to see an outside perspective (maybe Lady Danbury's cuz that woman sees all ) is tremendously gratifying. Like I want him publicly pining over her and I would love seeing one half of the ton completely gobsmacked at the utter devotion Colin is showing to Pen and Pen alone while the rest who knows Colin (eg. his family) are just shrugging and are like "I knew it was gonna happen eventually."

Have you somewhat snuck into my mind and had a peek at my muse? How did you know this is exactly what I planned for Chapter 13? lmao. I intend for Chp 13 to be from everyone's POV but POLIN until the very end where I might leave it on a Cliffhanger. Again, I never know what's gonna make the final cut of a chapter until its all written but you can expect something along the following:

Miss Felicity is only the beginning of Poor Colin's torment (she is very much in bratty little sister mode again)

And she'll have the brilliant help of her two eldest sisters Prudence and Phillipa who are determined to make Colin work for Pen's attention. (They missed having her focus, and ever since Pen fancied herself in love with him, she's been obsessed with the Bridgertons. Its only because they love their little sister they are accepting the match lol)

Also, let's not forget that Penelope technically has brothers now too, in the form of her sister's husbands.

Then there's Ant, Ben and Simon trying to make sure Colin stays gentlemanly and proper while making his intentions to court Penelope clear at the ball.

We also have Eloise, who while not actively going out of her way to interfere, 100% will be offering her unwanted commentary. Cue Daphne with her ill-timed attempts to keep Colin from becoming an unhinged spectacle. Add a dash of Hyacinth adding fuel to the fire with her misguided assumptions about Colin's interest in Felicity Featherington.

While we're at it, let's peek at where Francesca is an unwilling witness to a verbal battle of will between Portia and Violet, where history is remembered and accusations are made. (Franny will argue this to be the reason she escaped back to Scotland)

How unfortunate of Lady Whistledown to retire just before the juiciest most scandalous ball (as of yet) came to be..... Oh well, at least Lady Danbury won't want for entertainment again.

Summary: Colin calls on Penelope, but finds that Penelope already has callers.

The morning after Lady Danbury's ball, Colin got up early and barely ate his breakfast as he thought over what he would say to Penelope when he called on her.

"Colin, what is the matter?" Violet asked over her cup of tea. Before Colin could Evernote spit a reply out, in rushed Eloise with the latest Lady Whistledown's Society Papers.

"She'll make up anything just to get our attention!" Eloise exclaimed. "Miss Penelope Featherington danced with three different men last night. Duke Harry Dankworth of Flintshire, Mr. Marcus Anderson and Lord Debling. Maybe it's time she hung up the shrine she holds for Mr. Colin Bridgerton." This made Eloise laugh. "Penelope having feelings for Colin, it's absurd!"

As Eloise continued to laugh, Violet looked over at her son, who seemed to have sunk further into his chair. Could other people see the crush Pen had on him, but somehow he couldn't? As he came to realise his feelings, Pen was pushing hers to the side.

"Eloise, why don't you go show the new Whistledown to Francesca and Hyacinth?" Violet asks her second eldest daughter, who shrugged her shoulders and walked away. Once Eloise was gone, Violet took a seat closer to Colin. "Colin, darling."

"She hasn't, hasn't she? She's had feelings for me this whole time?" He asks, looking over at his mother.

"Truthfully, darling. She's loved you for years..." Violet tells him, and Colin nearly slips further into his seat.

An upset noise left Colin when the words left Violet's mouth. "Mama, what do I do?" He nearly whines.

Violet reached over and fiddled with the hair on the top of his head. "Flowers. That's always a good place to start," Colin looked up at her. "Get her roses."

Colin had heard for years between his mother and younger sister Daphne that different flowers and colours mean different things. "Yellow roses? Yellow will-"

"No."

Colin looked over at Violet, surprised she cut him off so suddenly.

"Never give a woman you intend to court, yellow roses. Never. Do you hear me, Colin Bridgerton?" He nodded his head, almost scared of his mother. "Now, they can't be lavender roses, because she's not your first love," Colin looked at his mother confused. "You were engaged to her cousin during her first season."

Colin blinked, remembering the time when he was engaged to Marina. He wished he could wipe that experience off the face of the earth. "What I feel for Penelope, it's a lot stronger than anything I felt for Marina."

Violet looked at her son, he had the same look on his face as Edmund when she was doused in flour at eight years old. Of all of her children, Colin was the most like her late husband, and she could see so much of herself in Penelope as she was once a wallflower and clung to the safety net of the edge of the balls.

"Lavender roses will do nicely then, my darling."

After a visit to the florists, Colin arrived at the Featherington Home, there were already three carriages sitting on the road. Judging by the crests on the side, it was Dankworth, Anderson and Debling. The same three men were seen dancing with Penelope at last night's ball.

Colin muttered a curse and jogged up the steps. Standing by the door was Ludders, Featherington's loyal butler.

"Mr. Bridgerton," Ludders greets.

"I'm here to see Miss Penelope," he says, rolling the bouquet over in his arms.

Ludders blinks. "I will go see with Mrs. Featherington if you will be accepted," he says, allowing Colin in and then he waits at the end of the corridor in front of the door which leads to Featherington's green drawing room.

But the door opened, and he was allowed in, the first face he sought out was Pen's as she sat on the sofa next to her mother, looking at him with scrunched eyebrows and judging eyes. It was obvious it wasn't Pen who allowed him in.

"Mr. Bridgerton, we weren't expecting you," Portia Featherington says, sitting up straight as if she had a wooden ruler stuck down the back of her dress. "Would you like to take a seat next to Lord Debling?"

It should be noted that sat on the other side of his Pen was Prudence, the only other unmarried Featherington lady.

"Thank you for seeing us on such short notice," said Lord Debling, who stared Colin down out of the corner of his eye. That's when Colin remembered Lord Debling, from the night of the Featherington ball, when he was so drunk out of his mind he couldn't tell his left from his right.

"It's my pleasure, Lord Debling," Portia smiled, not taking notice of Colin. It had been well-known that Portia wanted to marry one of her daughters off to one of the Bridgerton sons.

Colin didn't pay attention to anything Portia was saying, as he just kept looking at Penelope, wondering what was going through her head. The sun was shining off her hair, and sometimes in her eyes when it came out from behind a cloud, which would cause her to squint for a moment.

"Penelope, would you stop squinting!" Portia very nearly demanded of her daughter.

"The sun is in my eyes, mama," Penelope said, raising her hand to give her eyes some shade. The sun made the freckles appear like stars on her arms and cheeks.

"Who are your flowers for, Bridgerton?" Asked Anderson, who stared down the sofa at Colin.

For a second, Colin forgot he was holding the lavender roses. He could see Portia motion to Prudence for her to sit up straighter.

But, Colin handed the bouquet over to Penelope, who stares up at him, very surprised.

Lifting her hand to take them, she gave him a small smile which made his heart flutter. "Thank you, Mr. Bridgerton," and his heart stopped fluttering.

He got used to her calling him both Colin, and Col on the rare occasion, but it wasn't often she called him Mr. Bridgerton. He didn't like it.
