love when you can ask the Narrator why the Princess is a Princess and he's like 'well i uhhhh YOU did that. maybe it's because uh... something something about her being above you... but still approachable... look i don't want to analyze or anthropomorphize your--' my guy. i am a primal being of Order and Eternity and Shaping. You're the one who convinced me I was some dude and were quite willing to take credit for shaping my view on the world through narration five seconds ago. Are you gonna look me in the eye and tell me the desire to interpret something worthy of adoration and more powerful than me as a dommy princess is written in the very nature of the universe or are you going to show me your browser history like a man

I said I wasn't going to get started on the topic of Aveline ruining Carver's chances with the guard but I lied okay, it's Carver Hawke defense hours.
Here's the thing; it doesn't matter if you believe Carver was or wasn't fit for the guard. That's a different debate that I'll get to. What matters is Aveline's in no position to tell the guard not to accept his application. Why does she think that's her right to judge whether or not he's fit?
Carver should've had the chance to prove himself one way or another. If it turns out he's not a good fit, then let him fail. Let him learn from it.
"Oh but failure could mean lost lives-"
Aveline doesn't get to talk shit about failure and the people. Plenty have died on her watch yet she still believes she's a good guard and Guard-Captain.
"maybe Aveline's protecting him, Carver could die while on patrol-"
Carver could die working in the Bone Pit, or serving as a templar, or when he's running around with Hawke. Carver could trip and fall down a set of stairs and die. In fact, he can die in the Deep Roads, somewhere he wouldn't have to go if the Hawke's weren't desperate.
Either Carver fails as a guard, or more likely, he succeeds and proves himself worthy of it.
But let's be real, Carver probably kept getting rejected due to being a Fereldan with a past of smuggling/mercenary work and Aveline only reaffirmed the decision, either because they asked her what she thought or she stuck her nose in unprompted.
But what irritates me is that she admits to telling them not to accept his application, and then has the balls to call Carver too proud to take up a trade or find another line of work.
Carver tells her, "And who would take on a Fereldan apprentice? Maybe in another year I could work my way up to pissboy." He has a good point here. Aside from the guard, the only other place Carver could work and use his skillset is with the Templars. Or go back to mercenary/smuggling work.
And Aveline doesn't even have a real answer for him. No suggestions, no encouragement, nothing. Just "Fine, let's crawl down some holes. Good bloody luck for your sake."
Also, if you do the Mark of the Assassin DLC in Act 1-
Aveline: You should see if any of the noblemen are looking for new men-at-arms. Carver: Are you trying to get rid of me? Aveline: It's a role with some autonomy. A good fit with your training and... tendencies. Carver: After serving King Cailan? You want me to suffer some poncy git who needs two servants to wipe his own ass? I'll find my own way, thanks. Aveline: I wish you would.
You wish he would?? Aveline, he was trying to find his way into the guard, a position he'd make a good fit for, and you helped deny him of it because YOU didn't think he would be good enough, I just-
If I haven't made it clear yet, I firmly believe that Carver would've made a great guard. He wants to help people, to be a protector. He's loyal, and despite what Aveline claims, he can follow orders and take his duty seriously. We see him do incredibly well with the Grey Wardens, after all. If he were a guard, he wouldn't have to go down into the Deep Roads with Hawke, and I think he would've been okay with that! He's so hurt and bitter when you leave him behind because that effectively tells him, "I don't need you." Carver's spent the whole first act telling you he wants to go on the expedition aka that he wants to be needed.
But if he were a guard, he would be needed elsewhere. He'd be in training as a recruit. He'd look after Leandra while you go. He wouldn't be backed into a corner with no income and only the templars left as his chance at forging his own path and providing for his family.
He doesn't get that opportunity, though.
By the way, if he becomes a warden, you can get this banter:
Aveline: I'm glad you found a place with the Wardens. Carver: Well, it's not the city guard, but it'll do. Aveline: Carver... it wasn't the place for you. Carver: No, it's all right. It is. It cost a lot, but I get it. I really was a bit of a tit those days, wasn't I? Aveline: Well...
This banter makes me want to scream.
Aveline's just... she's so insistent that she's right. She's someone who will double down rather than entertain the idea that she's wrong and it's not just with Carver and the guard, it's with everything. The "my beef with Aveline" list gets longer and longer every time I replay da2, I swear.
Say what you will about Carver, whether you think he would've been a good fit or if Aveline's right and it wasn't for him, he was denied a chance and it cost him so much in the end. He either dies, or he joins the templars where he deals with Chantry's bullshit trying to brainwash him with "mages aren't people" and "magic is a cancer in this world", or he's infected with the blight and becomes a Grey Warden, forced to serve the rest of his life fighting darkspawn, tormented by voices and nightmares.
I will never not be bitter about this.

The Circe Saga is coming close, so here are some reminders for everyone!
1. "There Are Other Ways" is NOT the same as "Say No To This".
Whether we go by the original context or the musical context, Hamilton was blackmailed FOR sleeping with a woman, while Odysseus was blackmailed INTO sleeping with a goddess. Hamilton can say "no" and go on his day, but Odysseus will get smote.
I get that the vibes of these songs are similar, but they are NOT THE SAME SITUATION!!! Please don't fall for the thought trap that Odysseus was seduced or purposefully cheated on his wife. He was terrified of Circe but had to do what he could to save his and his crew's lives.
2. Either you love, hate, or have complicated feelings with Circe, PLEASE DON'T ATTACK OTHER PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT VIEWS OF HER!!!
Circe is a complicated character, and there are mixed opinions about her. I know that people who read "Circe" novel, The Odyssey, or any other works with Circe in it will have disagreements, but please resolve them on your blogs instead of the Epic comment sections.
We don't want people to break into fights and ruin the musical experience for everyone.
Thank you for your cooperation!

for real WHERE does the idea that [utdr humans] are nongendered so that "you can project on them" come from. their literal character arcs are about NOT being a blank slate to be filled in by the audience
i think i understand the assumption on some level for undertale, because there is a very intentional effort to make you identify with the "player character" in order to make your choices feel like your own (the beating heart of undertale's metanarrative lies in giving you an alternative path to violence against its enemies after all, and whether you're still willing to persue it for your own selfish reasons. YOUR agency is crucial).
of course, the cardinal plot twist of the main ending sweeps the rug from under your feet on that in every way, and frisk's individuality becomes, in turn, a tool to further UT's OTHER main theme: completionism as a form of diegetic violence within the story. replaying the game would steal frisk's life and happy ending from them for our own perverse sentimentality, emotionally forcing our hand away from the reset button.
i think their neutrality absolutely aids in that immersion. but also, there's this weird attitude by (mostly) cis fans where it being functional within the story makes it... somehow "editable" and "up to the player" as well? which is gross and shows their ass on how they approach gender neutrality in general lol.
but also like. there's plenty of neutral, non PCharacters in undertale and deltarune. even when undertale was just an earthbound fangame and the player immersion metanarrative was completely absent, toby still described frisk as a "young, androgynous person". sometimes characters are just neutral by design. it's not that hard to understand lol.
anyone who makes this argument for kris deltarune is braindead. nothing else to say about it.
#this is a very difficult topic to discuss imo because on Some level I don't completely disagree with people who make that argument for chara#in SPIRIT. if not in action. like my point still stands characters can just Be neutral. and if that level of customization had been intended#well Pokemon's been doing the ''are you a boy or a girl'' shtick for ages. no reason why that couldn't have been included as well#but i do feel that we're supposed to identify with chara within the story. not as in chara is us but as in we are chara#and i think someone playing the game without outside interferences and (wrongly) coming to the conclusion that chara IS literally#themselves in the story. and thus call them by their own name (the one they likely inputted at the start) and pronouns#will be someone who grasped undertale's metanarrative more than someone who went in already spoiled on the NM route who thinks of chara#(and on some level frisk as well) as completely separate from us with independent wills and personhoods at any time#who treats them as nonbinary. even if their approach is more ''appropriate'' to a gender neutral person#systematic error vs manually changing every measure to fit what you already think is going to be the correct result. ykwim?#of course this opens a whole new parentheses while discussing the game outside of your personal experience#because even if you DO see chara as a self insert then they are a self insert for EVERYONE. women men genderqueer people#i don't call chara ''biscia'' even though that's what i named the fallen human in my playthrough. neither do i use they because i also do#if you're describing the character/story objectively in how they are executed then you're going to talk about them neutrally#because you ain't the only sunovabitch who played the darn game sonny#so like. either way you turn it. even in the most self insert reading you'd STILL logically use they/them so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ git gud#answered asks

btw while I’m still being annoying, my favorite example to bring up in the “hygiene products that you can just pick up off the shelf at the store can have KNOWN carcinogens in them” conversation is coal tar. This one’s still crazy to me. It’s used in anti-dandruff products for its “anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties" but it’s also LIKE. a hazardous substance... but it can still go in your shampoo bc “aww but it’s only SOME poison, it’s not like, a LOT of poison, so we can still sell it and it’s ok”

I'm obsessed with the concept of time on this show since it's one of the themes of this slow burn.
Since season 1- with the sound of the alarm in the pilot, time looms over Carmy's head.
This is also a tool used to set Carmy and Sydney's relationship apart from the rest. The viewers can't consider her like family because he still makes time for Sydney, and when he doesn't make time for her, shit hits the fan throughout the show.
This concept of time is prominent in season 2 and it shows up as-
18 weeks until friends and family. Sydney wants to hire Natalie, and Natalie says time could be better on her side. Time is presented with clocks around Claire and scheduling issues with plumbing and drywall. Time is against Donna to prepare a festive meal. For Carmy, he needs to spend his time correctly. It's checking the efficiency of the stove and island placements, and it's Carmy trying to be present. For Sydney, it's having a short amount of time to lead her team to victory and always wondering if she has enough time to be successful.
Along with the clocks in season 2, there's the theme Every Second Counts, which shows how time is perceived differently for most of the characters on the show.
For Marcus, every second counts is having more time with his mom. It's about where you spend time, who you’re spending it with, and if being a chef is worth the time.
For Richie, time reminds him that not much has changed, and in Forks and through Chef Terry, it’s not about being too late to live life; it’s finding ways to have more time well spent.
From Chef Terry's dad, Every Second Counts is embracing the moment.  Hundreds of entries with details about Palm trees he'd seen, escargot he tried, how purple the ocean was. And he signed each one the same every time.
But every second counts against Sydney and Carmy. Their anxiousness sees that time can sometimes move too fast to really embrace the moment. It's their quick-paced lifestyle as chefs and a reminder that they don’t have much of it. Sense of Urgency is the motto.
That is until they’re near each other. The audience even gets a reprieve with Sydney and Carmy on screen because they're also experiencing time standing still together. When they can focus on each other, it becomes plentiful and expands so they can develop their relationship.
Now I'm excited to see what role time plays with season 3- will there be so little of it, and will we continue to see the consequences of Sydney and Carmy not making time for each other? Or will Carmy, with his lesson learned, attempt to make more time for Sydney?

Does your heart resemble a den fit for a fanged king? Or simply a fragile insect, emitting desperate strength fluttering for its peace? Scars on the outside tell stories. However what’s inside… actually carries out our definition, that’s worthy of treasured representation. Are you a clutched puppet to that pledged great blue devotion, a servant of their design? Or does freedom course in your blood stream? Can you continue to bury your beloved early graves? Castaway their impactful memories that marked your days, either to fortunes or misfortunes. We lose an essence layer no matter the level of the depth of what’s cut. Is your spirit capable enough to rise to unseen heights? That tower, even the giants? Many wear masks to hide concealing those nasty truths. …Ours. Is a missing key. That door… Is what’s left. Behind is everything. Everything we can be, or left to become. Our drummed history and identity remains. There is a Power Beyond Potential in knowing and finding out all we are.

I just want to make one thing very clear. Black and brown people, especially Muslims right now, don't owe white people for your allyship in racial justice. Not even those who are themselves systemically marginalized in some way. Not white Jews, not white queers, not white disabled, not white working class, not white poor.
Whiteness is the most lethal kind of oppression because it built the current colonial capitalist, imperialist world order. Every white person benefits from and is complicit in its systems in some way because white supremacy is global. Whatever marginalization has white people in it can be and is easily weaponized against the mellanated. When charged with your racist, exclusionary and oppressive behaviour you hold up Black and brown people of the same marginalizations as tokens. This is the only time they are ever visible; more often than not you profit off their labour, hoard their gains, throw them under the bus and make them part of your iconography for liberal progress points once they're dead and have no inconvenient opinions about your conduct.
This is why it's very hard for Black and brown people to take accusations of bigotry towards you in good faith. We also have a duty of care towards others but more often than not it feels like you want us to do what you want while holding a knife to our necks. Even when you don't do it directly, you issue demands like "if you don't do x and y you clearly don't care about my people and deserve the worst!!!" without considering for a moment that the full brunt of that policing will always fall on Black and brown people, because punitive justice exercises itself first and foremost on the vulnerable. If your demands for allyship carry disproportionate punishment for Black and brown people should we refuse, you're just on some power trip and never needed our help in the first place. This also obfuscates the needs and disenfranchisement of Jewish, queer, poor, disabled BIPOC and Global South people, especially because, without racial justice, few of your gains will ever materialise in their lives. It's always trickle down liberation for the rest of us.
Your allyship is supposed to be the work of conscience, a recognition of injustice and a drive towards privilege equal to your own. For white people, it's an individual reparation on your part. It is not an act of kindness, or benevolence, or a transaction that must be repaid in kind. The worst of us deserve the same rights the worst of you already have. That's the meaning of equality. If you're willing to let us get fired, deported, or brutally murdered for bad behaviour, then not only were you never an ally, you were also just waiting for the opportunity to use that weapon you claim you never wanted. There is no justice in an asymmetry of power.

It's funny to me that so many people are insistent on "fixing" Astarion. It's not as if he is entirely devoid of sympathy for one, and it is clear that even with his more violent and selfish tendencies traveling with a more good aligned PC, as well as his other more good natured companions, does have a positive effect on him ESPECIALLY when he finds out that he is genuinely CARED FOR. So what is this fixation with "fixing" him? What is broken in him--his sense of self, of personal agency--becomes repaired to a degree organically through conversation and action of the PC, if they so choose. Some people are naturally more selfish and we love them anyway. Some people can't be arsed to bother with grander problems beyond themselves and we still love them anyway. And neither person is any less valid than someone else, but we're always going to be biased based on our own experiences with people and whether or not we know them personally. There's something there, something in that, and it bothers me because it smacks of wanting to change who he is at his core because you like the package but not the whole product. It feels like saying he is only TRULY worthy of love and acceptance when he falls within certain expected and "respectable" social parameters, and that just doesn't sit right with me.
