Escape the Night, Escape the Memories

a small bit about the Survivors and how they work within the mafia!verse. it’s sort of like ETN is there, but also... not. The Savant is also not in this (though he is a Survivor), he lost his mind after going through three different slaughters and ran off in a panicked fit. the other Survivors meet up once or twice a week to talk about everything that happened. also!, Tiv is the only one who made it out of the Circus. so he’s kind of double fucked in the sence that he doesn’t have a partner and the only other person who knows about everything ran off after losing his mind.

the good news is, i have a plan for this. the bad news is, you have to wait for it.

Tiv doesn’t usually sneak away from his brother. He doesn’t have to, of course, he’s allowed to come and go as he pleases. It’s just hard for him to admit that he’s going to what amounts to “grief counselling” for him and the other Survivors of the slaughterings.

Tiv ignores the shiver up his spine, ignores how it feels like he’s betraying his second family by not telling them. How is he supposed to tell them? Hey, I’m Tiv Setter, you’re long-lost twin brother. I have memory issues stimming from an accident when I was younger, and chronic anxiety. Oh and, by the way, I died and was magically revived! 

How are you supposed to tell your brother and your secondary family that? 

So, Tiv just doesn’t say anything. He only tells his brother that he’s going out and he’d be back later. He goes out, making sure he isn’t followed, and ducks down ally-ways to the Warehouse District. There, he meets old friends.

He’d met Nali in a bar one night. He was getting drunk, despite his policy to never touch alcohol, and trying to forget the memories of what he’d been through and what he’d done. Nali had found him, had recognized that haunted look in his eyes.

She sidles up to him at the bar stool and asks. “You know Sav?”

Tiv startles, then glancing over, he nods. “Knew him,” he replies. “He’s gone now.” Tiv knocks back another shot, grimacing at the burn. 

Nali hums. “The alcohol doesn’t do much. Not in the long-run. I have a few friends, we’ve been meaning to reach out-”

Tiv laughs, high and reedy. “It dulls the senses for a while,” he interrupts. “That’s all I need.”

The woman sighs. “You’ve had enough for tonight,” she says softly. She takes the shot glass out of his hand and waves the bartender away. “It’s time for you to go home.”

Tiv had followed her back then, just like he’d follow her now. Just like he’d follow any of them now. The truth was, Tiv trusted the four of them more than he trusted himself. More than he trusted anyone, even his own brother. 

It sounds terrible, he knows. But these people, they’ve seen him at his worst, when he was drunk and screaming about a Strongman or a Snake woman. Or that time he was concocting antidotes in his kitchen at 3am because he’d had a nightmare and thought he was still in the Circus. Or that time he was investigating a case that was remarkably like the cheerleader with the control collar. 

These people have seen him in just about every state of being, sleeping, awake, half-asleep, angry, drunk, sad, and more. They’ve watched him cry his eyes out over losing Jet and throw things across the room because he wasn’t able to protect Trouble. 

Tiv loves his group and he knows they’re always going to be there for him. He’s always going to be there for them as well.
