In the far reaches of an ethereal plane, nestled neatly in its own corner of nothing rages the realm of a nightmarish being - as it always has, as it always will. Known in whispers as many monikers - the world eater, the eldest god, the entity, all there is and all there will ever be - is a wicked existence, a black hole of a creature that knows only hunger, an insatiable craving for power and control. Though confined physically to its own realm, millennia of growth have nurtured a set of abilities that extend throughout all universes, slithering its slimy hands of magic outward and grasping.

The powers of the entity manifest as manipulation, as coercion and deceit - a promise of power, the whisper of love, the hope of a reunion, though all of these gifts twist grimly upon the arrival in the nightmare realm. What was promised is quickly realized to be a lie and what awaits the newfound arrivals into the plane is nothing but pain and fear. The entity, you see, feeds on rampaging emotions - fear, anger, hope, loss, grief - and has woven its world with trials and tribulations designed specifically to invoke high, tasty emotions ripe for absorption.

But bubbled safely within a mismatched, puzzling city known to locals as Polaris - stolen artifacts of different worlds, borrowed and misplaced by the entity - is the heart of hope, the archivist, a scholar that dedicates his life and his learned magic to keep alive one singular safe haven for all the realm’s borrowed residents.

Within this city and during the trials, each resident has to make a decision - band together, fight through the pain and suffering, and find a way home, or acclimate to the settings and accept their fate. Some find their situation despicable, abhorrent - others are more inclined to neutrality, to acceptance.

Tbh? I don't like Paul. I don't want Paul. I understand that Paul serves an important narrative function and that Paul is the best possible ending for Camilla and Palamedes given their situation, personalities, and relationship. However what I really want is for Camilla and Palamedes to attend the ATN wedding as two individual humans and for Pal to be a lightweight who loses his tie in the garden fountain after three drinks and for Camilla to do exactly one shot with the group, keep Gideon from ripping the sleeves off her dress shirt, and absolutely kill it at lawn games during cocktail hour. Since this scenario is a wild tonal mismatch for the series and also Palamedes was already dead, this was unlikely to ever happen. However Paul is the final nail in the coffin for the theoretical existence of this scene and I can't help but resent them for that

#I don't think we as readers are supposed to welcome Paul. at least not without grieving Pal and Cam #Paul's existence is both a horror and a triumph #however my concerns are much more petty and involve Camilla winning at cornhole #I can't yet properly characterize Paul. would Paul lose their tie in the fountain??? would Paul win at cornhole?? #or does everything that made Pal and Cam individually delightful cancel out into a person who is mostly competent and boring. #they balanced each other out you see!!! so what happens now that they're combined into one person!!!! #the locked tomb #nonasbirthday #nona the ninth spoilers #the locked tomb spoilers
