i can’t not talk about free the final final stroke

mild spoilers so i’m gonna put a cut but basically i just gotta vent my feelings lol

ok this movie was so good haha i enjoyed it a lot from the acoustic oldcodex to the unexpected character interactions to haru’s emotional journey to the weird framing device for everyone’s introspection.... ugh it was really good!!

ikuya is so cute. he’s not the tsundere ikuya from high speed, he’s not even the angsty ikuya of dtf, ikuya has been really honest and joyful and cute and i just love to see him thriving! he deserves it!!!!! 

also rin and ikuya’s friendship continues to delight me... they are so wholesome and i was so happy that their bonding moments from part 1 weren’t a one off like they have fully become friends

speaking of rin... kyoani seriously put their whole pussy into making rin the most beautiful anime character in the universe???? why is he so pretty???? and rin also had so many good character moments. most of them involved haru lol. but yeah i just love rin and i love when he cries so... this movie pleased me haha

kinjou.... i’m just gonna say it i like him! according to the free! formula anyone who appears to be an opponent or obstacle will eventually become sympathetic due to their sad backstory and then become integrated into haru’s friendgroup so from the beginning i knew this was what was in store for kinjou and i was ready for it and it did not disappoint! he is a good guy! i would watch more of kinjou!!

makoto’s flashback from part 1 was expanded/explained.... it was a childhood memory of trying to comfort haru after they lost a race to some older kids. and like what had seemed like an unnecessarily angsty moment in part 1... it became so uplifting in this movie! 

also,,, ok this is about the popcorn set LOL but in the theaters they’re doing special popcorn bags and those also come with a clear file... and for part 1 they did a haru/ikuya clear file and also a makoto/rin clear file (makorin was sold out when i tried to get it last time ;;;;;) but this time the clear file was rin, haru and makoto. at first i was like.... this is nagisa erasure, this is sousuke erasure etc, but watching the movie, this trio makes so much sense to be the featured one and i love it... like basically when haru seems to have lost his purpose/path, when azuma starts to fear that he’s going to make the same mistakes he did in his youth, it’s makoto and rin who go after haru and try to make everything okay. like from the beginning those two have always represented his biggest sources of support but in different ways, makoto by accepting and loving haru unconditionally and rin by challenging him and spurring him to growth,,,, idk everything involving rin and haru and makoto was beautiful and i now have an ot3 clear file LOL

oh yeah but ok about kiyo... ok so azuma’s childhood friend/kinjou’s cousin was shown properly in one flashback and he was so beautiful and then there was no wrap up???? or at least not enough to satisfy me. what i really truly wanted was for kiyo, after all of azuma’s and kinjou’s angst over him, to show up and not be dead lol and be like “don’t talk about me like i’m dead” like i felt like that would’ve been hilarious. but now i feel like he’s actually dead for real and i’m so sad,,,, rip kiyofumi

ok ALSO i had kinda forgotten the timeline of the first movie so i wasn’t prepared for rei/nagisa etc to graduate high school but they did, and first of all there was a cute scene with gou, the mikoshiba sister, and ayumu videochatting like they became a lil girl group but they’re all separate because gou went to college (i think?) and it was just sweet how they kept in touch.... and then rei and nitori are 1st years together at i think ikuya’s college? and MOST IMPORTANTLY NAGISA AND UOZUMI/THE GUY WHOSE NAME I FORGOT (THOSE TWO EXTRAS FROM SAMEZUKA LMAO) GO TO KINJOU’S SCHOOL AND ALL THE FRESHIES ARE INTIMIDATED BY KINJOU BUT NAGISA PRANCES RIGHT UP TO HIM AND IS LIKE “KIN-CHAN CAN WE SWIM ALREADY?”AND STARTS STRIPPING AND KINJOU IS LIKE “OK” AND STARTS INSTRUCTING HIM HOW TO STRETCH AND THE OTHER GUYS ARE LIKE “PLEASE TEACH US TOO” AND KINJOU GIVES THEM A DEATH GLARE LIKE HE ONLY ACCEPTS NAGISA, LIKE HAZUKI NAGISA CHARMER OF MEN, HAZUKI NAGISA ANGEL ON THIS EARTH, BREAKING BARRIERS, WINNING HEARTS, I LOVE HIM

ok and the last thing i have to say is just that i love shiina asahi. I just love asahi so much. he’s such a good boy. he’s shown to be trying his best and supporting his friends and he has a really good scene with rin and he’s just a ball of sunshine and he’s perfect and i just love him. he wasn’t major in this movie but he’s major in my heart haha and that’ll never change

ok but actually the real last thing i wanna say is... the one thing about this movie and the last movie also is i do wish it had been a full series. i feel as though it was meant to be just a season 4, because a lot of the things that happened would have been better served with more screentime. like with kiyo, kinjou, albert, etc, i personally wanted to see more wrap up/resolution/general character development. BUT this is not to say i’m dissatisfied with the movies!!!! i enjoyed them a lot and i liked all the artistic choices with like presenting haru’s life as a movie and having different characters do like metacommentary on it lol it was really interesting! and like i thought the pacing worked quite well and the flow between the two movies made sense and... yeah i thought it was all executed well, it’s just.... i wanted even more because i’m greedy haha

yeah there’s definitely more i can say so i’ll probably write about this again but maybe i’ll save it for after my second viewing (gotta go back for that popcorn set and also to try and get the kinjou coaster 特典 LOL)

I've some bitter thoughts about Rika and how damaging her actions (or.. inactions) were to Satoko in Gou but it's weird- dunno how to say it without it coming out like she 'deserved all the hell she got' (when that's not the point at all). Hanyu warned her about /exactly/ this kinda crap in the original though, and without a leash on her so to speak she'd gone full escapist-fantasy at Satoko's expense to the point of even neglecting her through solitary confinement... yikes

Oh man, I’m so with you. I’m going to do spoilers underneath for obvious reasons (and maybe vague Umineko spoilers because Ryukishi07 loves re-exploring certain themes and it shows) but I will say, the bigger the backlash against Satoko got the more I got entrenched in my own position lmao - not the best attitude, but hey, might as well admit my biases upfront.

Like, even now I have to immediately preface this with ‘Rika doesn’t deserve this’. Of course she doesn’t. No one deserves this. But could she have prevented this with a little more thoughtfulness? 100%. And I think that’s what sets off a lot of people - on first glance, it does come off as very victim-blamey, because it seems to put the onus on Rika and really, that isn’t fair at all. Just like it wasn’t fair to Keiichi in Watanagashi/Meakashi that not giving the doll to Mion triggered those tragedies, or (to be as light on spoilers as possible) Battler’s ‘sin’ in Umineko has the effect it does. But the fact is, they do matter, and it is hammered home hard in their respective stories. Everyone acknowledges (and in canon, even Rika!) that if Keiichi had understood Mion’s feelings better and hadn’t thoughtlessly given the doll to Rena instead, then the tragedy with Shion wouldn’t have happened. And yeah, that’s messed up! But it’s true! Ryukishi07 loves the rippling butterfly effects of small, seemingly inconsequential thoughtless actions that end up hurting others in ways you don’t realize until it’s too late.

Like wow, it’s wild to me that even after all the terrible things Satoko did to Rika, the part of Gou that affects me the most is Rika’s impassioned plea for Satoko to come with her to St. Lucia’s (where all teenage girls go to suffer lol) after Satoko is completely upfront with her in her first loop, explaining how she’s not cut out for it, she’s going to struggle with studying, etc etc.... and then just. The juxtaposition of the same outcome that happens a few years later, when everything Satoko is scared of happens again. And maybe it’s because we don’t get to be dragged along the full years those two episode cover that makes it harder for a lot of the viewers to connect with Satoko’s misery and motive (I, personally, connect a little too closely with it bc of some personal experience and can confirm that for someone from a much worse background Satoko would be miserable and isolated in ways I can’t even imagine), but it just seems so odd to me how many people won’t acknowledge that Rika’s actions - or specifically, inaction - again, something Ryukishi07 highlights over and over again as a huge character flaw for her - led to this outcome.

And to bring it back to what you said about Hanyuu - you’re right, she does warn Rika about this explicitly that she’s treating Satoko like some neglected pet (I think I referred to her as Rika’s ‘comfort stuffed animal’) in the VNs because she’s such a staple of Rika’s lives that she can’t imagine being without her. This also comes up with Saikoroshi when everyone’s lives are ‘fixed’, everyone’s families are perfect, Satoko and her aren’t friends (and admittedly she does bully Rika) and what happens? 1) Infamous ‘Rika beats Satoko with a chair’ scene and 2) Rika decides that her perfect Matsuribayashi ending is better despite Hanyuu telling her that this is the perfect world for everyone, so bye-bye Satoko’s parents & Satoshi lmao (yes I’m oversimplifying it because the moral of that story is that the lessons they learned from their suffering/struggles made them into better people and we’re left with the question of whether it was a dream world or not but like, especially considering the cost of returning to the Matsuribayashi fragment, that’s kinda... messed up, Rika!). a-also omg do you think Satoko saw that fragment as an option because if she did, ouch....

To wrap this already messy ask up in an equally messy bow, Rika is living with that ‘uncompromising happiness’ ideal from her poem which is great.... except in loop 1 & 2, she fully stuck to that at Satoko’s expense. There was a point that Satoko was willing to (and would rather have) stayed behind and let Rika go to St Lucia by herself. It’s only in Loop 3, after Rika chased her out of the bookstore, after Rika insisted that ‘she wasn’t going to compromise on her happiness, she wanted both St Lucia & Satoko at her side’ that it became an all-or-nothing game. And yeah, obviously the hell Rika’s been going through since then is absolutely disproportionate to her ‘sin’, but there is just no getting around the fact that this was entirely preventable.

I finally finished the Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni VN today after three-plus months of inching through it!

I'd already watched the 2006 anime (as well as every OVA I could find - yes, including Kira). I've also been intermittently watching the new anime, Gou, but with close to no knowledge of Umineko or any other related series.

My thoughts under the cut.

In short, the VN was absolutely worth playing even having seen the anime. While I still do love it, the shorter time it has to spend on comfy slice-of-life scenes and character backstories mean it does suffer a little bit, in particular:

Keiichi is so much better in the VN. In the anime he had his moments, but I almost felt like he was mostly there to make the cast into a pseudo-harem. In the VN, he's just great, right up there with all of the other kids (well, except Rena, but more on that later).

Meakashi was already my favorite arc in the anime, but in the VN the tragedy hits so much harder, especially with Shion's final line, "I wish I hadn't been born".

The Keichii/Rena fight in Tsumihoroboshi felt weirdly offputting in the anime, and I felt the VN did a much better job of slowly shifting from the dark mood of most of the arc to its almost-happy ending as Rena relearns how much she loves having fun with her club.

Irie's behavior is pretty concerning in the anime, but in the VN he feels a lot more like a genuine good person who just jokes around a bit too much.

I remember already feeling that Miyo was a kinda compelling villain, but the part in the VN where she just grabs all of her pain and hurt and channels it into an incredible drive to excel and succeed (Matsuribayashi, Chapter 4) is freaking amazing, and thanks to that I'm always going to associate its BGM with Miyo, even though it's also played when Akasaka rescues Rika.

There were a few pretty small things I felt the anime improved on:

The anime-original "Reunion" episode and the Yakusamashi-hen arc were really good, and in particular the latter has my favorite Ooishi scene when he just freaks out in frustration over how powerless he was to stop the disaster. I really like Detective Delicious in general, but that one scene, even more so than any of Rika's, was really the moment I felt most "God, please help these kids".

Some of the perviness is slightly toned down in the anime, or rather, confined to the fanservice OVAs. (The exception is Irie, as mentioned above.) I did start to tolerate the story's humor a little better as time went on, but it's still a little much on occasion. 

The VN getting more in-depth was generally good, but there were certain parts where I felt it could have been condensed. Like, instead of cutting repeatedly to Akasaka during Matsuribayashi, just have him show up and rescue Rika (it's set up well enough with the fragments mini-game).

Speaking of the pacing, I initially played the Steam version but at a friend's recommendation installed the "07th Mod" with full voice acting and updated graphics for Himatsubushi and Meakashi. But I switched back to unmodded afterwards, since while the voice actors do a really good job, it slows the story even more, which is generally fine during dramatic scenes but causes the comedic ones to be something of an ordeal (the mahjong chapter of Himatsubushi, not least since I have no freaking clue how to play, was slightly torture).

I also feel that having voice acting changes the atmosphere to something much closer to that of an anime. If you're planning on only playing the VN, I'd recommend doing it all with the VAs, but as I'd already heard Rika say "Nipah" about a million times I was looking for a bit of a different experience.

===Some Thoughts on the Whole Story===

Higurashi's overarching message - that all that's needed for a happy ending is for everyone to come together - is something I often disagree with, and a lot of my other favorite stories take almost the opposite perspective. One anime whose ending I absolutely adore has the main character go off by herself and talk the main villain into a puddle of tears, winning the "final battle" of the entire series thanks to character development gained mostly from introspection.

But in Higurashi, for all that, it really, really works. Ryuikishi07 absolutely goes the extra mile, and as idealistic as it often feels, you can't help but come out of the story feeling that just about everyone deserves more trust, compassion, and understanding. One of my favorite quotations, from a book I read in middle school about a rabbit, is "things only seem impossible before they happen". Maybe it feels like two people, or a village, or a nation couldn't possibly meet in the middle, but they actually can, and they can accomplish things nobody would dream of with their shared will.

(I guess you could nitpick and ask "hey, when does Teppei show up to help defeat the Yamainu"? - lol - but I think the story does a really good job nevertheless.)

One other thing I just have to praise Higurashi for is that it actually resolves nearly all of its mysteries with a minimum of hand-waving, which is pretty uncommon for a mystery story, and I know that at least when I first watched the anime I was sure it would kind of invent an ending out of nowhere. There are magical elements, but they're pretty well set-up, and the one "miracle" that occurs feels very natural.

Rena is still my favorite character, even though Tsumihoroboshi was middling as an arc (meaning still amazing). When she’s sane, she’s the best friend anyone could ever have - Mion and Keiichi try, but their specific flaws mean that they’re dumbasses sometimes when they just want to help. It takes a lot of skill to write a believable, super emotionally intelligent character, which is what Rena is. That - and the scene where she hides in her happy place in the car during the rain was atmospheric as all heck. Being all by myself somewhere out on a rainy night is my comfort and my healing. Fortunately my own problems are more manageable than what she had to deal with in Ibaraki.

Overall: 9.5/10, whatever you might imagine that number means to me. The anime gets one point less, but it's still really good.

Am I excusing Satoko's actions? No. But I've had the same thing happen to me a million times. Your best friend becomes 'cool' and makes friends who hate you and abandons you because you don't fit into that friend group. Then you're all alone, lost and hurt while it feels like everyone hates you, even the person you trusted most in the world. That shit hurts. For Satoko is must be 1,000x worse. She gave up everything to be with Rika, she did something she hated just so she wouldn't lose Rika... And for what? She STILL lost everything. All because Rika was selfish and not considering Satoko's feelings. Satoko only went to St. Lucia's because Rika said they were in it together. Now she's all alone, and she hates it there. She hates her current life, being made to feel stupid on the daily for not thinking the right way. It isn't fair. Not to mention, she has to sit back and watch her friend move on without her. If she would've stayed in Hinamizawa she would've been sad, yes, but she wouldn't have had to watch Rika move on in front of her while she's left in the dust. It really seems like Rika only wanted Satoko to go so she was guaranteed to have a friend even if she couldn't make one, but she did make quite a few, and has left Satoko to be alone when she obviously really needs her. A good friend wouldn't have let Satoko leave when she said everything was fine. It was clear on Satoko's face and how she was acting that none of it was fine. Rika should know her best friend better by now. Satoko deserved so much better. Where's her happy ending? Her happy timeline? Rika should've left her out of her dream, because it wasn't Satoko's dream. I really do think Satoko would've been able to get past Rika leaving if she had the support of her other friends. It's obvious she misses them, while Rika hasn't even mentioned them once. I'm so mad guys.

thoughts on free! s3? what do you think went wrong/right/what you wish it would’ve went etc

I could quite literally go on FOREVER about season 3 and y’know what you asked for it so I’m just gonna ramble until I feel good about it lmao.

Now first I have to say that I wholeheartedly love season 3 with the deepest passion in my bones. I genuinely didn’t think that we were ever going to GET a season 3 in the first place, so the fact that it exists is just... so meaningful to me as someone whose favorite franchise is Free! and someone whose life was saved by these dumbass swimmers. 

I will say that season 3 isn’t what I wanted from it. I wanted it to be centered on Nagisa, Rei, Gou, Sousuke, Ai, and Momo. I love Haru with my entire being but I really really REALLY wanted to see a series centered on the Iwatobi trio. They’re so underrated and I felt like they were lowkey sidelined in Eternal Summer so I wanted to see them shine and grow together in their third year. But of course Kyoani has just been setting them aside more and more as time has gone on so I feel like that was nothing but a hopeless dream lmao. I have a lot of headcanons and AUs about what went on with everyone who was still in Iwatobi while the rest of the gang was in Tokyo. The little bits that Kyoani gave us of them were beautiful, I will admit. Episode 11 is my FAVORITE episode of season 3. The fact that Rei WON A NATIONAL RACE??? Like, come on. I wish we could’ve seen the work that he put in to even be able to do that in the first place. That moment where he ponders what he’ll be doing after high school really gets to me too because I would love to know what the fuck he and the others are gonna do. I wish we could’ve seen the moments in their third year that led to whatever decisions they will make. I wanted to see the Iwatobi trio go through the absolute wringer together lmao. I wanted angst I wanted to see their journey that led them to where they are now. I wanted to see more of them growing with the new trio too. I wanted to learn more about Gou and Sousuke’s past through their interactions in her third year. If the season was longer I feel like they could’ve had it be half the Iwatobi arc and half the Tokyo arc, y’know what I mean?

Nonetheless, I love season 3 for what it was. I’m so beyond happy that they brought in Asahi, Ikuya, Natsuya, and Nao, you have no idea. The High Speed! characters hold such a special place in my heart. I wish Asahi would’ve had more of an arc/character development though, and I wish Nao was more included. I think Natsuya’s character arc was my favorite of the whole season. Seeing the trash traveling man that he had become and his interactions with Rin and Sousuke really stuck with me for some reason. And that line that he had when he was talking to Ikuya and fucking crying like, “a dream to fight for my strength and pride, plain and simple.” That shit fucked me up bro. We all meme about Natsuya a lot but I feel like there’s a lot of deeper shit there that’s yet to be explored. When we met Ryuuji I was genuinely convinced that he was Ikuya and Natsuya’s father because it would explain a lot about Natsuya’s behavior. A trash dad who wasn’t really there for his family and just kinda fucked off to travel the world training swimmers until he found one that met his expectations? That would’ve added so much to Natsuya and Ikuya’s background stories and their character arcs. Like can you imagine? Natsuya not initially going into professional swimming because the fact that his father LEFT to find a swimmer to train instead of training his own damn son because he didn’t see that potential in him??? Natsuya being inspired by Ikuya to work hard to prove their father wrong??????? Nao punching Ryuuji square in the nose the moment he sees him???????????? A fucking gold mine that Kyoani could’ve dove into, but no he’s related to Shizuru lmao. 

I could go on forever about Natsuya in season 3 cuz I just really, really loved his arc but I’m gonna keep rolling haha. Hiyori was probably the most unexpected thing from season 3 and I just... love him so much. Like his absolute snakey behavior gave me the same chills that that scene of Sousuke pushing Haru against a vending machine in episode 2 of Eternal Summer gave me. I LOVE that shit. The Free! antagonists just keep getting bitchier and bitchier lmao. I also relate to Hiyori on a deeper level. I too have been selfishly protective of my best friends in a way that... really just wasn’t the way to go. Like jeez Hiyori I understand how you feel but maybe let them talk to Ikuya at least once??? Chill with the possessiveness? Idk I know Hiyori is the source of a lot of discourse lol, but that’s just how I feel because of my own similar experiences with myself and others who’ve acted in a similar way. I do wish his beef at the other boys wasn’t solved by just fuckin... swimming with Haru lmfaoooooo. Like I wish they just would’ve added more to his conversation with Ikuya when he asked him to join the relay with him.

I was quite satisfied with Rin’s arc in season 3. It just like, made perfect sense to me I guess lmao. I know he wasn’t there much but I don’t know what else they could or should have done with him, if that makes sense. The fact that his coach is Ai’s uncle is just the best thing ever too lmao.

I was also very happy with Haru’s arc actually!! Seeing how much he has grown makes me feel like a proud mom. Ya boi is tired of the bullshit and the miscommunication haha. Of course I’ll always wish he didn’t go into pro swimming but alas, gotta deal with it I guess. I love his dynamic with Ryuuji and the way that he has dealt with pro swimming though. And his decision to go into the individual medley absolutely made me lose my mind. I didn’t know I needed to see him swim the other strokes until it happened and I just, I loved that so muchhh. 

I alsooooo enjoyed Ikuya’s arc. Seeing someone from your past again like that can 100% have that effect on you. I just kinda wish we understood more about like, why he just randomly faints while swimming sometimes? I feel like they didn’t solidly explain it? Cuz I don’t think it was always from overworking himself. Idk maybe I’m just a dumbass and remembering incorrectly.

Kisumi deserved better. YOU CAN’T TELL ME THIS BOY DOESN’T HAVE UNDERLYING ANGST THAT KYOANI HASN’T DELVED INTO. He gave us that line of “We’ll never make friends like the ones we had back then” and then him worrying about whether or not there was anything he could do to help with the Ikuya situation. This boy feels left out and you can’t tell me otherwise and it is 100% because of the fact that he’s not a swimmer. Someone give this boy a basketball team that he can experience that kind of bond with PLEASE. I AM BEGGING ON MY KNEES!!!

Makoto also deserved better. Like, okay, don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved his arc with the kids and Nao and all that. I love his new dream. BUT!!! Kyoani has yet to go into depth with his insecurities with Haru. I’m still not over that damn dream he had on that bus. All we got in season 3 was Makoto’s aNGSTY looks when it came to his relationship with Haru lmao. GIVE MAKOTO A BIGGER ROLE AND A BIGGER ARC DAMMIT. He’s one of the most popular characters I’m surprised his angst hasn’t been touched on more. This dumbass just needs to stop holding things in i SWEAR TO GAWD.

I thought the inclusion of Albert was kinda weird, dunno what the point of him is aside from making Haru shake in his bones. Kinjou is definitely interesting. He scares me lmao, but I am here for that. Give us an antagonist who is just absolutely unhinged at this point LMAO. I have some headcanons about him too but I feel like the new movie coming up is going to crush my dreams soooo yeah.

Isuzu is a goddess. I’m so happy she’s finally here and she has a name and a FACE. We learned that the Mikoshiba bros had a sister before we even knew that Momo existed lmao (Sei mentioned her in a drama cd from season 1). I almost thought they were never going to give her to us but she’s here and she’s beautiful and she’s everything that I wanted her to be. I’m so happy she thinks Gou is cute and that GOU LIKES HER and I just ugh yes thank you so much Kyoani I never expected that we’d actually get this but I’m so happy we have it. I hope she goes to Hidaka Uni and gets to race Haru like she wanted haha. And I’m so happy we got to see her swim! Our first in-anime female swimmer with a name. I love her.

Speaking of FEMALE SWIMMERS. Sighhhhhh.... My biggest disappointment. Aki Yazaki. Where is she? We deserve her!! I promise we do!! She was SUCH an important character in the High Speed! novels and kyoani decided that she just doesn’t exist anymore lmao (biggest reason why I’m not the biggest fan of the Starting Days movie). At this point I’ve lost hope that she’ll ever be included in the anime, and it makes me so sad. I love her so much and there’s so much potential for an amazing beautiful story arc with her if she reunited with the boys. I don’t think we’re going to get a season 4, (the new movie is scaring me making me think it’s the end of the series with the way it’s been advertised...) but if we DID get one I imagine it beginning with Haru walking through a snowy day, huddling close to himself to shelter from the cold, when he passes by a tall figure and catches a glimpse of familiar caramel hair with a loose little braid peeking out from behind one ear and a large scarf that has gotten quite messed up over years of wear and tear, a memory clicks in his mind like a light switch and he stops in his tracks to turn around and let a long forgotten name slip from his lips: “Yazaki Aki?” ... cue opening sequence. LIKE WOULDN’T THAT BE SO AMAZING???????? I WOULD FUCKING SHIT MYSELF OKAY YOU DON’T UNDERSTANDDDD. Aki is one of my favorite characters I’m so mad she wasn’t in season 3. I’m also mad that Satomi Nii wasn’t there either like!!! She would make a great trio with Ikuya and Hiyori that’s all I’m sayinggggg. I would probably start crying if either of them showed up at some point like genuinely I would just be a mess sobbing on the floor. ALSO I FEEL LIKE GOU AND ISUZU WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM LIKE PLS GIVE ME THE GIRLS THAT WE DESERVE!!!

The art style of season 3 was pretty good. The only thing that bothered me about it was how fucking WIDE the characters’ shoulders were sometimes. Especially with the big bois like Makoto and Sousuke. Like please god no stop that. I’m always gonna miss the art style from season 1 tho, the crazy expressions n shit that were there were just too GOOD lmao. I feel like in season 3 they kind of attempted to bring that back but it just wasn’t executed the same and done to the same extent. R.I.P. the comedy from season 1, it will be forever missed.

I love the opening and ending themes, always. So fucking good. I’m so happy all the characters were included in the end theme animation sequence. I’ll never get over Gou and her BEAUTY.

3. That would be a good story, Asahi surprised me this season, I truly think he deserved the front line more than these two. At least he will see Rei again this season. I personally wanted Natsuya with Nao story, I was kinda disappointed that he talked so much about missing him and all they did was sit in a cafe for a minute talking about Ikuya.

Some scattered messy Saikoroshi thoughts upon rereading cause why not:

I actually... much more enjoyed Saikoroshi than in my first read? For some reason in my memories that chapter never really did anything for me before that, and I think it has quite to do with the fact I’ve always found “bonus arcs when the story’s already over and don’t need any more additions” kind of annoying. But, reading it now, it does have a lot of interesting elements and do a really good job about fleshing out some parts of Rika’s character and diving into her thought process and struggles. Honestly, I actually think it legit does a better job at this than Minagoroshi (probably partly because of the fact we get no weird and unnecessary Keiichi POV transition here), and I truly some bits of it had been imported in her dedicated main arc.

Rika sounds so incredibly hurt when Satoko acts codly towards her and treats her with indifference and it just breaks my heart... Especially that passage where she thinks ‘Oh maybe I was just a replacement for Satoshi after all’ really killed me, and made me think back about how in Tatari she’s the one who pushes Satoko and Keiichi to get closer, and tell him to act similarly to Satoshi because she can’t play her big brother’s role for Satoko and... in that sense, thinking that a part of Rika genuinely believe Satoko cares so much for her only because she acts like a replacement to her brother is so deeply sad.

The famous scene where Rika lashes out at Satoko and hit her with a chair is a very good, chilling scene, but it is pretty baffling when I rememer the reactions a lot of people had to this was "Wow Satoko totally had that coming! That’s what bullies deserve, go Rika!" because... Rika is definitely portrayed as the one being in the wrong here. Actively rooting for Rika in that moment is so weird, cause her behavior is extremely creepy and it's very much a manifestation of her more damaged personality and trauma that's acting up (aka, her Bernkastel side). Obviously what Satoko did to her wasn't good, but saying Rika's reaction to this was deserved is, like, completely missing the point of the scene to me, which is very much here to illustrate just how badly things can escalate when she lets her darker, negative feelings surfaces to the point where she has no hesitation to violently assault one of her loved ones -- specifically her best friend who is usually the person she wants to protect the most.

This has been said before, but there’s really something bittersweet abotu the fact the club wouldn’t exist and that these kids wouldn’t be as close if it weren’t for all the tragedies that brought them together, and that’s a part of the story that’s very meaningful to me.

I’m a very bitter we didn’t get to spend more time developping the whole thing about the twins having never switched places to start with. I mean, that’s such an interesting concept that would make SO much difference for Mion and Shion, but somehow it’s just mentioned once like an after-thought! I’m a bit perplexed about Shion as her original Mion self being so close to Normal Mion, I think she’d still be pretty different, and I don’t like the implication that if the twins had never switched then it’d miraculously solve all their problems (like, lol, no, the Sonozaki family would still be fucked up as hell), but god I wanted more of this. 

Hanyuu and her relationship with Rika in there is so... uncomfortable and unpleasant. Not sure I can explain it well, but it’s basically this pretty disturing and unhealthy dynamic of their original relationship that is never properly addressed in the main game, except that it is much more glaringly obvious and worse here. Also the whole backstory about Hanyuu’s daughter should’ve definitely been present in the main VN.

I kept thinking about Gou a lot while reading it for multiple reasons, but principally what got me the most is Rika’s psyche and mindset as a looper that is much more explored in it. Like, theses passages especially (translation’s not very good but it’s the only one we have for now):

This is 100% the exact same mindset Satoko gets in Gou. “All that happens in those worlds don’t matter cause they’re just like dreams, so I can do whatever I want with whoever until I get to my Ideal World, even kill and hurt others." This is honestly one of the aspects of Rika’s character that I find the most interesting (and unfortunately the most underexplored), how the loops consistently make her dehumanize everyone around her until to her those people become just ‘pieces’ in a game, how much it twisted her perception of reality and human relationships (and how, at its extreme, we end up with Bernkastel). It is amusing to me because I remember how many people got so offended about this peculiar cold part of Satoko’s in Gou, when Rika actually had the exact same approach to this, just in a more passive way. And Rika thought this way even while knowing the mecanism of the fragments and having Hanyuu guide her. Satoko doesn’t, and it’s pretty clear in Gou she thinks she’s only ‘repeating’ time.

Speaking of, did we ever get the confirmation that Gou takes place after Saikoroshi? Like, I guess it’s implied it does, but Saikoroshi is never referenced at no point by Rika so it’s a bit confusing. Then again the first part of Gou is a mess with it seemingly not being sure what it exactly wants to be, so that’s not all that surprising.
