You are never drinking again. Ever.

Your management would agree after what happened last night. You didn’t mean to spill the secret you’d been keeping. It wasn’t even that big of a deal, however, you had an image to keep up. The party girl, the kind one, the one with lots of friends, the girl who had good grades in college, the one who always donated most of her fortune to various organizations. 

Now, every tabloid was writing articles about your celebrity crush. 

Party girl and influencer drunkenly admits she’d love to sleep with lead singer of Corroded Coffin Eddie Munson. Sources have said they’ve been together for a while but decided to keep it under wraps. 

The dating portion of that article wasn’t true and you silently vow to figure out who the fuck these ‘sources’ were. However, you admitting to wanting to fuck Eddie… did happen. You have no one to blame but yourself. 

Now, there are three reasons why you’re so stressed about this. First, even though you party all the time, you were good. You know, like only went out on the weekends, did every single assignment, tutored people on the side, was probably the most unproblematic influencer out there. Second, the last thing you wanted was Eddie Munsons attention. You had this thing where you didn’t want the people you were fans of to perceive you. 

Theoretically you knew they did, most of them followed you on social media. But there was a difference between being a fan of someone, and them semi-knowing you vs your actual crush who you own a poster or two of? That makes you want to throw up and pass out at the same time. 

But, finally, the third reason this stressed you out was because Eddie and his crew were not good. You know like, partied every single day, smoked a lot of weed and snorted coke off of his groupies and fans. It was all over the tabloids and the band has even posted about it a time or two. You didn’t do that. And if the tabloids caught you doing that, you’d lose everything you worked towards.

“So this is how we’re going to fix it,” Case, your manager, says from where she’s standing next to the fireplace in your apartment. “You’re gonna go back on live and say it was an accident.” 

You look up from the article you were reading, eyes finding his. “That is the worst idea ever. I was tipsy not black out drunk. No one will ever believe that was an accident.” You huff, locking your phone, “and I have tickets to their show next week.” 

You loved your team, but sometimes they made the most insane comments on how to fix the unfixable. 

You stand, pacing the room, “he isn’t one to read gossip magazines. And-and I’m not on the same level as his band. They’re A listers and I’m C list at best.” 

Your manager and publicist look like fish after what you said. Anna, your publicist speaks first, “I swear to god if you ever say that again I am uppin your therapy appointments. You hear me?” 

You huff, sitting back down on the couch, “I’m not kidding though. I’m not giving up this ticket. It’s one of the few things I’m looking forward to.” 

Case answers after rubbing her temples, “you better pray this blows over without him seeing it. You may party but his partying is a whole other level.” 

… 

The call came two days later, an unknown number popping up on your phone. 

You knew, you knew before you even accepted the call who’d be on the other end of the line. 

It felt like it started in slow motion, first came the gossip mags with the original story. Then came Eddie following you on instagram. He’d like a few photos and stories you put up. Then came his interview. The interview where he said, “of course I know who she is. I’m flattered really. I hear she’s a sweet girl.” 

Now, your phone is buzzing in your hand and you can’t bring yourself to answer the phone. 

“Yes just a fucking person. Just like you’re a person. Answer the phone.” You look down at the phone and are thankful it’s just you in your house. You tap the answer button, a fake smile on your face, as you put the phone to your ear. 

“Hello?” you use your best interview voice, the one Anna has drilled into you. 

You can hear him breathe in before letting it out, long and slow, it’s clear he took a drag of his cigarette. Is he nervous too? There’s no way. Eddie always seemed to be this cool and calm guy, never afraid of anything or anyone. He gets into more fights in a week than you have in your entire 25 years of existence. 

“Good afternoon, Miss Asher.” You can hear the grin in his voice and it sends a shiver down your spine, your heart pounding in your chest. “It’s Eddie.” 

He didn’t have to introduce himself to you, you’d be able to pick out his voice in a crowded room. But only because you’ve listened to his music so often… only reason. 

“Oh! Hi! I’m s-surprised to hear from you.” You cringe at the stutter that came out of you. You had more than enough practice dealing with any situation thrown at you. From the funny to the uncomfortable to the scary. You were trained for this and you were fucking it up. “How can I help you?” 

“The band and I will be in town next friday, we’re playing a show.” You know where this is going and it makes your heart beat faster, so fast you’re scared it’ll burst. “I was wonderin’ if you were goin’?”

Oh fuck. Oh fuck. Oh fuck. Oh fuck.

“I am, actually. Me and a few of my friends actually.” You rub your hands down your sweatpants, nerves making them sweat. 

“Oh! Well that is fantastic,” his tone is chipper as hell and you know he’s high. On what, you have no idea. “I was thinkin’ that maybe ya friends and you’d wanna join us backstage. VIP area for the show? What cha think?” 

All of sudden you forget how the english language works, your tongue sticking to the roof of your mouth. This is what you’ve been wanting for so long. Well, in your dreams of course. But looking at it from a business perspective, it could bring his fans to your page and your fans to his page. It was kind of a win win. Well, win win lose because then Corroded coffin knows who the actual fuck you are and you arent just some fan. And that, terrified you,  

“Heeeeeeello? Are you there?” 

His voice breaks through your clogged mind, forcing you to respond. 

“Hi, sorry. I’m here! I um I got distracted. But, yeah that sounds great, actually. We-we’d love that.” 

“Good! I will have my people call your people, yeah?” 

“O-or you can just send me the information,” you say it before thinking and now you really want to punch yourself. 

He chuckles to himself, “okay, sweetheart, I’ll text you the information. See you next friday.” 

He hangs up before you can say another fucking stupid thing. You press the phone into your hands, foot bouncing on the floor with nerves. You can think of seven different ways that conversation could’ve (and should’ve) happened. One of which was with your entire team, another being with your friends, another being with your parents. Not alone to make a fool out of yourself. Your management team was really going to kill you.

Since a traumatic incident six years ago, Castiel Novak’s face has been disfigured by a scar. He’s resigned himself to being someone people can barely stand to look at, let alone love. Except his heart doesn’t seem to have gotten the message. When Dean Winchester takes over the convenience store down the street from Castiel’s bookshop, Castiel falls helplessly in love with his new neighbor. To make matters worse, Castiel’s sister Anna is also interested in Dean. Believing that Dean could never love him, Castiel decides to help Anna win his heart instead.

“Hey,” Dean says. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you. Just… wanted to say hi.”

“Oh. Hi,” Castiel says, one hand fluttering nervously down his face and across his hair in an attempt to ensure he’s looking presentable. The tips of his fingers catch on the ugly, jagged ridge of his scar, and he remembers that “presentable” stopped being an option six years ago. He clears his throat and arranges his face in the polite mask of a consummate customer service professional. “Anything I can help you find?”

“Um.” Dean looks uncertain now, as though it’s a question he wasn’t expecting — despite the fact that it’s easily the most predictable question one could be asked in a bookshop. “I don’t know. I was just gonna browse, I guess.”

This is the point in a customer interaction where Castiel would usually withdraw, because “I’m just browsing” is universal bookstore code for “leave me the fuck alone.” But Dean doesn’t give any sign of wanting to walk away. Instead, he simply hovers in front of Castiel’s armchair, eyes gliding aimlessly (and somewhat helplessly) across the shelves to his right.

“What sort of things do you like to read?” Castiel finds himself asking, because it’s impossible not to take pity on a grown man who is capable of looking so bashfully lost.

“Anything,” Dean says. One of his hands flies to the back of his neck, rubbing at it. There’s something terribly endearing about the gesture — perhaps the fact that it makes him look like a boy who’s been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

Belatedly, it occurs to Castiel that it’s his turn to speak. His prolonged silence appears to have made Dean nervous, because he’s speaking again, a little too quickly to be altogether natural. “I know that sounds stupid. Like those people who say they like all kinds of music — which I don’t, by the way, just to be clear. Big classic rock fan. Zeppelin, the Stones. Metallica too, which I guess is classic rock these days and fuck, that’s kind of depressing. But, yeah. Anyway. Pretty much anything. Love Vonnegut and Kerouac, but I’ve read just about all their stuff. I’ll read sci-fi, horror, mysteries… actually, I guess I should say I read all kinds of fiction. Non-fiction kinda puts me right to sleep. My brother, Sammy, he’s a big fan though. Crazy about true crime for some reason.” Dean blows out a heavy breath. He abruptly seems to realize he’s scratching at his neck and lowers his arm back down, fingers twitching as if unsure what to do with themselves now. “You probably didn’t need to know all that, huh?”

“No, this is helpful,” Castiel says, getting up. “I’ll show you the layout of the store so you can see which shelves you might be most interested in.”

Somehow, Dean’s shyness makes him feel more at ease. When he first laid eyes on Dean, he thought someone as handsome as Dean must be a smooth and confident conversationalist. But he doesn’t seem to be, and somehow, that makes it easier for Castiel to hold up his own end of the conversation.

Or maybe it’s just that Dean doesn’t know how to talk to someone like Castiel. He wouldn’t be the first one.

Well, I did it, I made an extremely annoying durge playlist for DU drow.

Because I can't help being pretentious, It turned out being a linear concept album. Some songs are about specific relationships and events, some are just mood setters. It's also split like this:

Childhood: Tracks 1-3

Teens: Track 4

Active Bhaalspawn, pre-Absolute: Tracks 5-10

It's a longass playlist and I reasonably don't expect anyone to sit through the whole thing, so here's a helpful little guide that lists the more stand-out tracks and what they're about, as well as whichever ones are specific to a character:

One of the issues with disney movies lately is some of the disney female protagonists is the adorkable personality. Which worked with Rapunzel and Anna but as time passed on, it seem to be the norm which the problem came once Wish revealed. Although despite that issues, all but Asha have reasons the way they are.

Rapunzel and Anna have been isolated from everyone with Rapunzel in the tower with only a chameleon as her friend and it didn't help that Mother Gothel is abusive to her while Anna stays in the castle with her sister being distant to her. I am not sure she is close with any of the servants since they are servants. Of course, they are socially awkward but they improve with Rapunzel having to experience social interaction in her TV series while Anna no longer has this in the sequel.

Moana is mostly serious and adventurous, which overshadows her quirkiness as only shown during her time in the ocean compared to the island as she fulfilled her duty as future chief. She has some laughable moments, but it doesn't stop her to continue her goal to saved the world and she is usually the serious of the two which the other is Maui.

Mirabel's quirkiness is the way she is because of how she isolated by her family and her village didn't pay much attention to her due to her being giftless which is why she tries her best to fit in. Her main personality is being empathetic as she helps her family with Antonio being brave enough with her favorite cousin by her side, Luisa talking about pressure that Mirabel listened, and Mirabel helping Isabel to let go of perfectionist. She can also be seen sassy like how she talks about Isabel.

Whereas Asha has no reason for the need to be quirky and awkward, she seems to be accepted by her friends, family, and the kingdom before the events of the story. She could have been an introverted, graceful woman who admired the king that she wanted to fulfilled his footsteps before realizing the truth.

Raya, Judy, Elsa, and Merida are the four disney female protagonist (not counting Pixar, I only included Merida since she is a princess) to not have that personality which is why are likable. The only issues they have is the movie itself especially Raya's movie theme being the trust message that is dangerous to followed, Zootopia's twist villain, the way Elsa is handle in the movies, and the bear curse parts.

Disney TV shows also have this issues with female protagonists, but not gonna say much since I am not sure if you know or not.

I haven’t seen like 3 of the movies listed here (Moana, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Brave) 😂 but I’ll trust that you know what you’re talking about, since I’ve seen Asha being compared to previous “adorkable” female leads like Rapunzel, Anna, Moana, and Mirabel in other Wish reviews.

The other 4 can have their quirkiness justified by being extremely sheltered and/or an outlier in their respective communities. However, this is not true of Asha, who is not only well known but also loved in Rosas—by her family, her friends, and heck, even the QUEEN.

It definitely feels like Disney got too comfortable with its formula, and in trying to please both modern audiences and older fans, they ended up pleasing no one. They’re so focused on making sequels and live action remakes now (which I guess is… easier??) 😅 I don’t know why Disney doesn’t make characters that are unique yet strong in their own ways. They’re capable of innovative characters (even if the execution of the overall stories aren’t great), as we see in Frozen and Zootopia (movies I have seen).

I did hear there was a lot of executive meddling in Wish’s production, so I wonder if this is why Asha had an unexplained quirkiness to her rather than a character that makes more sense for what she is and where she comes from. With her dad being a philosopher, I could see Asha working better as a quiet and introspective type who learns to be brave and to speak up for her own dreams and the dreams of those she loves rather than being a passive stander-by. This would actually give her a stronger character arc and growth rather than remaining static as she does in the actual movie we got 😔

Fun With Jump Arm Variations

When jumping, different skaters put their arms in different places, but generally they are pressed flat against the torso, especially on higher-revolution jumps. This compressed shape increases the skater’s rotational speed, which is important for attempting triples and quads.

But as anyone who has watched much skating has seen, you can jump with your arms in different positions, too. There are two main arm variations you will see in modern skating programs:

One arm above the head - these are nicknamed ‘tanos’ after Brian Boitano, who did not invent but did popularize the variation. Ones where the arm is bent a lot may be derisively nicknamed ‘helicopter tanos’, as some fans don’t like how they look. (Brian Boitano 1988 Olympics SP, Brian Orser 1988 Olympics SP, Petra Burka 1965 FS, Wendy Burge 1976 Olympics FS, Ekaterina Kurakova 2022 Euros FS)

Two arms above the head - these are nicknamed ‘rippons’ after Adam Rippon, who also did not invent them but popularized them when he started doing it on his lutz. (He did tanos on it for a while, but then started using both arms when he trained with Brian Orser, because he felt bad doing ‘tanos’ in front of Orser, who famously took silver behind Boitano at the Olympics.) However, there are also other arm variations. These are all rare nowadays, although if you watch older programs, you are more likely to spot a variation that’s not a tano or rippon. Ones I’ve seen include:

Hands on hips - these used to be much more popular back in the day but have fallen out of fashion. I would guess it’s because they slow down rotational speed too much, as every one I have seen is a double except this one by Michael Chack, but I don’t know for sure. (Jill Trenary 1990 Worlds FS, Michael Chack 1992 USNats FS, Rory Flack 1988 USNats SP, Tonia Kwiatkowski 1988 USNats SP, Midori Ito 1987 Worlds SP, Anna Kondrashova 1988 Olympics SP, Yuzuru Hanyu 2010 JPNats FS)

Helicopter arms - this one has been used as a warm-up by Yuzuru Hanyu, and I’ve spotted it in competitions a couple of times with single and double jumps (Rory Flack 1994 US Open Artistic Program, Yuzuru Hanyu 2012 Finlandia Trophy SP warmup)

Arms behind back - I’ve only seen this one performed by Jason Brown in his Riverdance program, where depending on the event he placed either one or both arms behind his back during the second jump of this combo (2013 SA FS, 2014 Nats FS)

Arm switching midair - I’ve only seen this one in this lovely axel variation by John Curry (1976 Olympic SP)

Hands by the head - I believe I may have seen this used by at least one other skater, but the only example I have at hand is this one by Nancy Kerrigan (1990 Goodwill Games SP)

Beginning in 2009, ‘varied position in the air’ became a positive GOE bullet point for jumps. This was because they are supposed to add to the difficulty of a jump, although I’ve seen arguments back and forth from skaters about how true that is for some arm positions (and even if which arm is raised makes a difference for tanos). Years later, they exploded in popularity, particularly in the women’s competition. The trend had its beginning around 2014 or so; the previous season, junior World medalists Evgenia Medvedeva and Serafima Sakhanovich were given programs constructed to include raised arms on a couple of jumps, which wasn’t too unusual, but in 2014, their programs contained many more of them. Medvedeva would go on to dominate the senior circuit for several years and notably used raised arms on most of her jumps during that time, which started the trend in earnest among other skaters.

This GOE bullet point was removed for the 2018-2019 season. But if arm variations no longer get that bit of GOE, why do we still see them so often? There are probably a few reasons:

Skaters who trained them for GOE a few years ago got used to doing them that way and don’t want to mess with their muscle memory

They can add to a program aesthetically

Skaters and their teams may still hope to impress the judges by using them

Skaters have said that rippons help straighten their jump axis

I’ve also seen speculation that rippons can be used to help muscle jumps using the upper body in some cases

I would also like to shout out arm variations on jump exits that aren’t the standard check-out position. These aren’t as common as mid-air variations nowadays and rarely get talked about as their own thing - probably in part because they were never a GOE bullet - but they can add difficulty to the exit as well as give a nice choreographic touch to a program. You can see a few in the above gifs, but here’s a few more:

Chapter One: The First Stop

I sat in the back of a white SUV, next to my best friend Jimmy. I was the scrawny one. He was a bulky mix of fat and muscle, feathery brown hair and a pinkish face with a kept goatee and rectangular glasses.

Jimmy's mother Anna sat in front of him, and her husband was driving. Kyle was Jimmy's stepfather, a heavy, tall man with a thick beard. He took up every inch of his seat.

Jimmy and I had been best friends since high school. We were well over adults now, both of us 23. He was the only person I could never tire of. We always had fun, and we always laughed our asses off.

A heavy, guttural smell hit me. I glanced at Jimmy, who was already grinning. I was used to the intense smell of his gas, though sometimes he pushed it beyond my limit.

"Oh, James!" Anna rolled down her window, fanning a hand in front of her face. "Please don't stink up the car on this trip, you two!"

She wasn't referring to me but Kyle. The bear-like stepfather was also gifted in the fart department, though I couldn't stand his. Too bad.

"This'll be the longest trip we've taken together." Jimmy got into another lane and scratched his beard. "I'll try to hold it for stops."

"Thank you." Anna grasped Kyle's free hand.

"Are we getting food?" Jimmy yelled.

"If you stop shitting," Kyle responded, a smirk cutting through his facial hair.

"I can't promise anything," Jimmy returned, bumping my shoulder with his own. "Ask Zac. I never hold it."

"True," I confirmed.

"It's about respect, son," said Kyle.

"Well, respect that I fart a lot." Jimmy shrugged emphatically.

Fifteen minutes later, we stopped at a rest area to eat some fast food at a picnic table. Anna was afraid we'd make a mess in the car. He might've been smelly, but Jimmy wasn't messy.

"You know we're not kids anymore?" Jimmy asked his mother.

"You'll always be kids to me, James," she replied.

BWOOOOORRRT!

The sound emanated from the bench beside her, where Kyle's obese form leaned away from his wife. Her mouth fell open.

"Bad idea!" Jimmy and I chimed in unison.

Anna gasped and coughed, only seconds before Kyle's hot garbage and egg fart reached across the table.

Anna turned away to cough more and spat in the grass. She turned back to Kyle with a glare and her lips in a straight, serious line.

He shrugged as he grabbed for his triple cheeseburger in the bag. "It's a stop, ain't it?"

"You're not funny." Anna slid away from him, grabbing her salad bag.

"I think he's funny." I took two medium fries out of our bag and set two burgers in front of Jimmy. It was our constant for fast food; I took his fries, he took my burger.

"Don't encourage him," said Anna.

We fell into silence as we ate. I looked around at other people at the rest area. I had a feeling much of the trip would be gassy, especially after this meal.

"I can't wait to get to the cabin," I said. "I can't stop looking at the pictures."

"Don't get too excited." Kyle burped and smiled. "My brothers are gonna give you so much hell."

"For being gay?" I asked.

"No. It's just what they do." Jimmy rolled his eyes behind a glare on his spectacles.

"And fart, just like him." Anna pushed Kyle's shoulder.

He closed one eye and leaned forward. VWAAAMP! Anna slapped his arm again, and Kyle laughed into his burger.

"Farts sound so funny on picnic benches." Jimmy's mouth was full, but I was fluent in full-mouth. To prove his point, he leaned to point his ass towards me. BRRR-WAP!

"James!" Anna exclaimed in the exact way she had hundreds of times before.

"We want them to get it all out now, right?" I bit a pinch's worth of fries. Jimmy's stink was hot and thick, but I'd been smelling that smell for seven years.

"That's not how digestion works, Zac." Kyle talked with his mouth full, too. Crumbs from the bun and salt from the fries were stuck in his beard. "It'll take a lil bit for all the red meat and cheese to kick in."

"You're so gross." Anna stood with her empty salad container and bag, throwing them in the closest trash can. "I'm gonna use the bathroom. You guys should try, so we won't have to stop as soon."

"I'll have to stop to fart," said Kyle.

"Oh God." Anna rolled her eyes and walked towards the small brick building.

Kyle swallowed his last bite and stood. He walked to the trash can and threw his stuff away, then turned and walked back. This time, however, Kyle headed towards our side of the table.

"Incoming!" I shouted.

Jimmy put his head down as Kyle jogged past us. FWRRMP-BLRRT-PWRRT!

I stood and hurried away from the table, before his cropdusting could enter my senses. Kyle was a notorious cropduster, but only when Anna wasn't around.

I threw mine and Jimmy's bag into a different trashcan. I wasn't going to follow the path of the fart. Kyle's farts stank so bad, and I suddenly became worried about the rest of the ten-hour drive.

Don’t know if it means anything but GT’s post on the happy couples studies thing on her Instagram….. isn’t that exactly what she’s been doing the past few weeks posting about David and recording him everywhere he goes?? Isn’t she literally outing herself??

(Grouping these together since they are about similar subjects. The third Ask is referring to this post, for those who might have missed it.)

I did indeed see the Insta story Georgia posted today and was as equally perplexed by her reasoning for sharing it. Here's the visual, for those who haven't seen it yet:

I was and am definitely surprised to see Georgia post this, for a number of reasons. What mainly came to my mind was, if she didn't want to invite speculation and open the possibility to people talking about her and David's relationship, then why post this? Because that is almost certainly the guaranteed outcome, as evidenced by the Asks I am now answering.

The second thing I wondered was, "Is this a moment of self-awareness?" It actually reminded me a lot of Anna calling herself a third wheel when she and Michael went to see David in Good last year, but in both cases it's this thing of where you wonder if they know that this is how a lot of fans perceive their respective relationships and are riffing on/making fun of that, or if there is some kernel of truth buried inside the joke. As I've mentioned previously when talking about the "other wife"/poly stuff with Michael, David, and Georgia, there is no better place to hide the truth than in plain sight, and so it really does make you wonder.

As to your comments @angelsadvocate96, these are some very interesting questions, especially given that Georgia posted this new Insta story just one day after posting a photo of Birdie and Lyra trick-or-treating together, letting us know that they were together on Halloween, which likely means that Michael and David were together as well. If this was the case, it does make you wonder what might've occurred when Michael and David were together to make that post resonate with Georgia and subsequently share it to Insta. Again, all we have is the optics of these little slices of their relationship that Georgia chooses to share, but those optics are increasingly becoming difficult to ignore.

I also don't know that I would say Georgia was punishing David with the Morrisons video, but as many people mentioned following her posting it, it was both confusing and upsetting to see her seemingly ignoring David's obvious discomfort. I know folks have said that he looked to be playing along, and that may well have been true to an extent, but David could also be the type of person who reflexively smiles/laughs nervously when he is uncomfortable, simply to conceal that fact. And we also know that David is an incredibly kind person who does not enjoy confrontation, so given all of those things, I'm not sure that it would be easy for him to tell her just how uncomfortable he really is. As for the videos being something he has to do in order to keep Michael, that was not something I had previously considered, but I don't think we can completely rule it out, either.

Whatever the case may be, it seems clear that something has shifted recently, although what specifically, I am not entirely sure. But given the reaction first to Georgia's birthday post about Birdie where she mentioned David, the reaction to the Morrisons video, and then alluding to David and Michael being together on Halloween, it's hard to think that Georgia didn't post that story today for a reason...

I don’t think it’s like that tbf. It’s very difficult to tell what the exact arrangement is and we will never know, let’s be honest. Below I’m going a little bit into my thoughts regarding GT/DT based on the stuff I’ve learned recently here so please don’t read if it makes you uncomfortable. I know it’s a sensitive subject and frankly I’m unsure of a lot myself when it comes to them so it’s mostly wondering really and trying to look at a few facts.

I can’t make my mind up regarding GT. I will always acknowledge the nice stuff she does but I can’t ignore the questionable things either. Ironically this should technically make me fairly objective I guess...

GT and DT are a weird mix. GT put a lot of work into creating a brand out of their marriage over the years and when you read about how it all began it makes sense why because there was a lot of dirt to cover. There is also the issue of her whole thing being DT because she didn’t accomplish anything on her own no matter how much money DT has put into everything she has ever tried over the years and it’s still going on (I just wish I didn’t need to suffer from that - sorry but she really can’t act). But creating a brand out of their marriage, a whole perfect image, is her biggest accomplishment. Girl should have went into PR.

Do I feel pure love out of their relationship? Not exactly. He often appears irritated. Her posts are usually focused on showing that she scored him and eg when she had him take a pic of them with her lying behind him with her holding his award and writing “mine”… really? That’s how you celebrate your man’s accomplishment? Especially compared to how much he was beaming with his boyfriend that night and how MS celebrated him… It was a harsh difference. More recently DT did BAFTAs and it’s her looking at camera with him on the side “Look the cool guy is into me! This is about me!”. I just… eh not my style. Gives me the cringe. Gives me an attitude of a woman who’s jealous of her man’s accomplishments when her only one is scoring him and she wants to show off to young fans and make it about her every time. Why it’s never purely about him? Im not even going into the PR kiss and articles.

It’s sad really.

I don’t know how much *real* love there is between them and how much an arrangement that worked out for them for many years. So I guess fondness has grown too? Acceptance? Maybe actual love developed? Everyone screams “kids” but it’s really not that difficult to make them, just in case anyone wonders. Especially when alcohol is involved which she let everyone know herself.

Maybe it did develop into true love. I don’t see it but that doesn’t mean I’m right. Maybe it’s a mix of PR and love.

Her job did change recently with DT changing the arrangement though because MS is now involved. The rumour is that their marriage has always been open which doesn’t surprise me, especially since she wasn’t seemingly against MS/DT since the beginning but I do wonder how it feels when it’s not just fucking around and actual genuine love that develops between the man you perhaps never had the real deal with and now he found it with someone else.

I don’t think she’s going anywhere. She’d never support MS/DT if that was the case. So that’s where the poly idea is coming from - it’s DT and GT and separately DT and MS. Nothing else. I think it was once more of a marriage plus a romance on the side but now it’s two “marriages” hence the change in narrative since December.

Those are my thoughts and guesses. Maybe I’m completely wrong. I really don’t know. The one thing I know though is that things are never as pure as a celebrity is trying to force you to believe and a lot of work has been put into creating a brand out of GT/DT.

And that’s always for a reason.

Last week, the New York Times ran a nearly 5,000-word piece about Taylor Swift in its opinion section. The thoughtful essay, by editor Anna Marks, specifically considers the superstar’s creative output by asking the question: What if, as so many of the references in them suggest, some of Swift’s songs are about being in love with women?

Marks is only about the millionth person to suggest that Swift might be dropping clues that she is gay in her work, a theory known as “Gaylor”: Here’s a 2022 feature about the fan theory that ran in Jezebel; here’s an explainer from later that year in Vox that gets into it, which, oh, also references a Vox deep dive from the height of the COVID-19 pandemic on “the queering of Taylor Swift”; here’s a Rolling Stone piece pegged to the release of Midnights; here’s a piece that ran in Slate after the re-release of Red that explored similar theories. I could go on and on. You get it. The Times is not exactly breaking new ground here.

Marks’ piece does stand out in a few ways: It’s very long. It’s in the New York Times, the “paper of record,” and that apparently confers some vague special responsibility to every word it publishes. It does not report on what the fans are saying but instead identifies Marks herself as the fan with the corkboard and red string. If it’s even a conspiracy theory at all, the piece openly muses about its subject: “There are some queer people who would say that … she has already come out, at least to us.”

The opinion piece has “prompted a fair amount of outrage online,” writes Danielle Cohen in the Cut, “where even those of us who enjoy the occasional Gaylor theories found these assertions—and the fact that they were made in an esteemed national newspaper—a few steps too far.” Among the outraged are Swift’s “associates”: “Because of her massive success, in this moment there is a Taylor-shaped hole in people’s ethics,” a “person close to the situation” told a CNN reporter, noting that, were Swift a man, this article “wouldn’t have been allowed to be written.”

Leaving aside that this very same author wrote a piece about Harry Styles’ potential queerness, it’s true enough that Swift isn’t a man. But she’s a cultural phenomenon. Her songs were streamed over 26 billion times last year on Spotify alone. Her celebrity is everywhere you look right now. It has made her a billionaire, and boosted the economy to boot.

Quickly and poorly reviewing and ranking adaptations of Jane Eyre (1996, 1997, 2006, 2011) by their pros and cons:

1996 pros:

Best fire scene, easily. It actually gave me that excited feeling that good cinema gives a person. Much of the cinematic art was enjoyable altogether, including the costumes.

This film probably has ond of the best Bertha's in my opinion. She's truly sympathetic, beautiful, and fierce. probably tied for my favorite Bertha actress with 2006. She and Poole are given little time in the story, however.

Most adaptations shit on St. John. Here, that isn't the case. What little time he has is spent in making him much more appealing than I've ever seen him, both physically and characteristically. I like this, because many forget that Jane did love him in her way, and he is supposed to be attractive and nice despite his zealotism.

1996 has the best Adèle, which is amazing for me as a big Adèle fan. There is more focus on her and her relationships with Jane/Rochester. I particularly love the scene where J draws R and Adèle tries to play cupid a little, and when Adèle is offended when the ladies insult Jane.

Best Lowood plot by far. This is the first time I've been able to stand the Young Jane scenes, and little time was devoted to her early life with the Reeds, just enough to let us know she was abused. I like this choice. The young actresses playing Jane and Helen were the best and most rebelious I've seen yet. Their hair cutting scene brought tears to my eyes, which rarely ever happens for me.

Good Blanche plotline. I absolutely love the cinematography/aesthetic & set design.

1996 cons:

the actors are individually endearing in some ways (the scene of Jane and the mirror is particularly touching, as is their reunion). However, The biggest downside to this adaptation is that the chemistry between Jane and Rochester was lacking in my opinion. this is particularly notable in their meeting scene and first proposal scene.

William Hurt is a fantastic actor, and he's likeable, but he's not my favorite Rochester ever. He's alright. On a rewatch I could see myself warming to him more.

I love Charlotte Gainsbourg more for her music than her acting. Granted, she was young here like Jane is supposed to be, so I do not blame her. Visually, aside from her height, I can absolutely see her as Jane. As the film went on I warmed to her acting style; Jane Eyre is a hard role to perform due to her inwardness. I don't think she was horrible, but Anna Paquin (of later True Blood fame) as Young Jane Eyre somewhat outshined Gainsbourg.

I was disappointed in Adèle being sent away to school before the disaster and her not coming back in the end (why couldn't they have had her running with Pilot in the landscape shot!!!).

1997 pros:

Maybe the most accurate Jane and Rochester. I wasn't expecting to like him at all but he blew me away. excellent chemistry between the actors. The dancing scene was very captivating, as was the scene with him jumping from the walkway, their outdoor talks, him chasing her down the stairs — really, I was impressed, because I thought I'd hate this film. Like in the novel and in 96, both actors are a bit conventionally unattractive (well, compared to 11 and to some extent 06) - and like them, the characters grow on you.

BEST ST. JOHN (although 2006 has the best Rivers sisters) - St. John is described as being nice though serious, and looking like a statue of a Greek God with all the coldness AND beauty - and this movie is the only one who relatively understood that assignment (96 came close emphasizing his niceness). Most adaptations adapt his coldness but not his conventional Eurocentric good looks, which not only symbolize his colonizer attribute but also his appeal to Jane and the others. It's also important to have a conventionally handsome actor play St. John just as it's important to have a conventionally less attractive Jane Eyre because one theme of the novel is the critique of Victorian physiognomy & beauty; Jane/Rochester being unconventionally attractive is a contrast to Bertha, St. John, Blanche, Georgiana being attractive, so I think this element is not inconsequential. The difficult part is that beauty is highly subjective, so relying on conventional standards is key, as is the reminder that Victorian standards were a bit different from our own.

good Lowood plotline, good Gateshead plotline, fantastic Adèle with lots of adorableness & miraculous though OOC bonding between her and Rochester, fantastic costuming (though I don't know about accuracy), good Blanche plotline overall. Probably my favorite Bertha plotline for being sufficiently creepy.

1997 cons:

this isn't really a con for me but many people may dislike 97 Rochester for being passionate to the point of coming off crazy, and physical domineering as when he grabs Jane when she tries to leave — however, this does kind of fit for canonical Rochester & I don't mind it since he's supposed to be that way, but this is still arguably a con nevertheless. he does come off as too forward but i get they were trying to capture the whole overpassionate thing. it does come off as a little more toxic than other depictions perhaps!

I have very few complaints overall. I don't think the chemistry is as appealing as 2006, but it is accurate. I wish there was more Adèle, but you can't have everything.

The posters are bad and make the actors look worse than they are which subsequently turns people away. I think 1996 was marketed a bit better but that 2006 also suffers from bad poster syndrome which had an effect on me also. Presentation is important; marketing and advertising are also important in cinema. The aesthetic isn't as good as 1996 although I don't think the visuals are bad overall.

Jane is a little dissociative seeming, which can be off-putting for myself and other viewers I assume, but to be fair she is described as being like a weird little elf creature in the book, and the actress plays this very well, actually looking quite ill when Rochester asks if she is.

2006 pros:

Best chemistry between Jane/Rochester by far and for this reason will always be my favorite because it actually made me fall in love with Rochester in the end though I didn't like his portrayal at all at first (that's power! — and my love for this Rochester should arguably be a con for the sake of my sanity and pride). best Rochester imo and a fantastic Jane. I love love love the way they did the Rochester storytime flashbacks and fleshed out his character as a result.

Best and most enjoyable Blanche Ingram plotline by far (although no one likes the lack of Rochester-in-drag, the party scenes & insertion of the twin flame theory was delightful).

some of the best dialogue, fantastic Adèle plotline, good Bertha plotline, best Pilot, best Rosamond, good costuming, good sets/locations (the fairytale ambience of Jane walking outside before meeting Rochester! Rochester's weird study!), I like the extra focus placed on themes such as nature/genetics/science, religion, travel, sexuality, etc.

2006 cons:

I dislike the way they did the Lowood and Gateshead plots, and although the Rivers sisters were good, I resent their St. John plotline for the most part. I disliked the lack of mystery surrounding Bertha; I think they made it way too obvious & not creepy enough, especially in showing her perspective from the window and giving her lines (one line, calling Jane a whore in Spanish) which no other adaptation does. I was sorely bored before and after Thornfield and only really revived when she got back to Ferndean (although Jane's flashbacks and some of the St. John plotline [the references to love, reminding us of her inner thoughts of Rochester] kept me alive). I suppose there were prices to pay for the excellence of the Jane and Rochester moments. - in comparison these seem like small prices, but still!

2011 pros:

deciding to go with a non-linear structure was a fantastic choice though I was skeptical of it at first, good St. John plotline for the most part & which they put emphasis on, really fantastic Jane with a lot of good fierce moments & lines, maybe the best Gateshead plotline including Mrs. Reed & the Red Room scene (although the lack of red was disappointing, and the lack of explanation for the chimney monster is conflicting – was it all in her head?), good young Jane, one of the best Richard Masons, star-studded cast, good dialogue, maybe the best costuming, Aesthetic™️

2011 cons:

least favorite adele (not insulting the child actress, this is the fault of the writers/directors)

— this is where i call security to protect me from an onslaught of jane eyre 2011 fans here on tumblr. alright, maybe i should watch it again — but i was expecting a lot more. particularly from michael fassbender as mr. rochester. probably my least favorite rochester by far & the least sympathetic. this rochester captures the dark and dangerous part of him but imo not so much the higher feelings that define him. the lack of humour & lack of unrepressed passion/drama/rage is noticeable - rochester isn't supposed to be quiet; as toby stephens (2006) said in an interview, rochester never shuts up in the book, he's really too eccentric to even be adapted accurately; he has to be toned down to be realistic, but here he's muted too far. - i felt like mia was carrying all of their scenes on her back & that the chemistry really rested on her primarily.

Cinematography-wise, there are some gems in the stills (famous hand holding gif), but I dislike the overall muted palette of the film; many will think this suits the tone and in some ways I agree, however, I will always prefer color and dislike the epidemic of desaturation we've seen so often in 21st century cinema. For this reason, 96, 97, 06 all triumph against 2011 aesthetically for me personally, although I still recognize some of the artistry of 2011, it is not my preference.

My overall ranking: 2006 (primarily for Jane/Rochester), 1997 (excellent overall), 1996 (good but flawed), 2011 (I tried but overall did not enjoy it).

did you see this 5,000 word article that's speculating on taylor swift's sexual orientation that was published earlier this month? i can't believe this was in the new york times. anna marks must have some blackmail on someone important there lol.

but, like, if you're taylor swift's management, how do you even respond to something like this? i know her fans have speculated for years that she's some unspecified flavor of queer, but that's on twitter. not the new york times. if she puts out a statement that says "i'm straight", it's going to come off like she's treating this as an accusation and she'll look reactionary, conservative, or like she's lying. there's no version of events where she can say "i support the lgbt community, but i'm not part of it".

i know one person on her management team talked to cnn anonymously and said it was invasive and over the line. iunno. i'm trying to contextualize this article against the history within the hollywood gossip press of speculating but in a very cagey way about the sexuality of closeted celebrities. it used to be a real thing in, like, 1950s hollywood with celebrities like tab hunter and rock hudson to sort of wink at the fact that these men were gay. and people kind of knew they were gay and there would be a little bit of a conspiracy within the studio system to obscure the truth about these men's sexuality by setting them up with these faux-romances with their female costars. and this would give the gossip press something to sink their teeth into so they wouldn't write the true thing that would be a huge scandal and ruin people's careers. it was kind of a symbiotic relationship where tab hunter would go on "dates" with natalie wood, and they'd write "oh, he's going out with natalie wood, but is he really the kind of guy that she wants? is he really the right type of man for her? wink wink nudge nudge." but there was a line. it was restrained.

and i think to see something like this in the nyt, even thought it is in some senses on a continuum with that kind of thing, it ultimately hits very differently. it does feel like, from a paper of record, acting as sort of cultural enforcer, trying to conscript taylor swift into this sort of culture war that she's been very actively trying to avoid involvement in for basically her entire career. prior to this, there was all this kind of pointed coverage about "why doesn't she disavow her right wing fans?" they've always been trying to drag her into this and kind of back her into a corner where she has to come out in support of democratic politicians, or she has to come out as an ally to the lgbt community.

to me, this article feels much less like the wink and nudge of old gossip press, and much more like, say, if at the height of when the biggest news story was the end of roe v wade, they published a 5,000 word op-ed that read more like an investigative report saying taylor swift had an abortion. it leaves such a bad in my mouth that they did this.
