Listen I do like Kuwei and think he had a very difficult time of it and deserves to just vibe in Ravka for the rest of his life but I need people to stop claiming that "they both had informed consent" when Jesper kissed him because Jesper didn't. Jesper literally thought Kuwei was Wylan and would not have kissed him otherwise. Kuwei knew this and did not make a move to stop Jesper or to tell him that he wasn't the guy he thought he was kissing.

As far as gay roles go, I think Lestat counts(Despite what Anne Rice claimed in the past) So Tom has played a canonically a queer character. As far as an intimate scene goes, I think that's less likely, but only because it's been a while since he's filmed one anyway. (I constantly laugh at the intimate scene in TGM because Tom is the only one who is shirtless, but i don't mind that in actuality) my general thoughts boil down to: I think it would be cool if Tom played another canonical, without question, queer character but i also think because of how people speculate on his sexuality, combined with how people tend to hold the stance of: "you must be queer openly to play a queer character" it won't happen. people are already weird about Tom when he plays presumably hetero characters, I can point to any number of Rogue Nation reviews that state that Ethan's potential romance with Ilsa is unbelievable because Tom is Gay (like hey i don't love Ethan/Ilsa but I'll become a hardcore shipper if i have to keep reading that take, just out of spite)

I'm happy projecting my own hc's on any of his characters, but I'm also sad that he's never played another queer character but i understand why he hasn't.

Sandman Episode 2 thoughts.

There's been a heavy shift in focus towards Dream's relationship with the Dreaming. It's not that he doesn't have one in the comics - or that it doesn't stand out in contrast to, say, Desire, that Dream fills his realm with people, but it's way more evident here. The Corinthian's behaviour wasn't really tied to whether Dream did or did not care about him before. Nor were the other dreams leaving tied to them thinking Dream didn't care.

Or perhaps I should say it wasn't a focus until much nearer the end, when Matthew demands to be treated like a friend.

It's an interesting new perspective to start there, to include the perspectives of the dreams who were made by Dream and have to handle living under his rule, but also love him and are valued by him in turn - however bad he can be at showing it.

(Also, intriguing to see where the wider DC universe has been neatly excised. Very neatly, since Sandman never had huge amounts of crossover with superhero stories.)

The storytelling in general feels smoother, more polished, since the first volume of Sandman was written episodically and still figuring itself out.

I do kind of miss, so far, the emphasis that Dream is equally the king of dreams and nightmares. He obviously has created nightmares, but that side of his personality is heavily de-emphasised. The Corinthian seems to be the one standing in for the nightmarish side of the Dreaming, even though he's just one dream.

Hmm. I think I really miss Alex's curse of eternal waking? It was so horrible, but it really got across the fact that Dream wasn't a moral entity but something older and harsher.

On the other hand I do love the Corinthian's wider involvement. He is just very cool. And at least someone around here is an asshole.

So usually when an imaginary friend is a real thing in a story, it’s either a demon or a ghost or some supernatural boogeyman that probably wants to eat the kid they’ve befriended (Mama, a couple of the Paranormal Activity movies), or “imaginary friends” are just treated as a real thing in the setting, and if a child just thinks hard enough they can manifest a friend into existence (Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Happy).

And somewhere in the middle is an area where the imaginary friend in question is real and they are supernatural, but they aren’t malevolent, and they aren’t entirely honest about what they are. Like maybe they’re a fairy or a god or some kind of boggle from mythology, but they just got caught by a six year old and they don’t have time to get into it, so they just go “…Yes. I’m your imaginary friend. We haven’t met. How do you do.” And then they stick around because they do love this kid, and if you’re a boggle from mythology in the modern day good food is really hard to come by.

And at some level. That’s what I think Hobbes is.

the funniest part of any Robin meeting the JL is that every Robin is so distinctly different from the previous one in terms of personality and vibes that the league literally gets backlash. and like, I don't blame them. not to mention that they are non-meta children that dress as a traffic light and fight crime alongside batman in gotham on a nightly basis. i'd also be a bit concerned.
