I keep seeing posts being like "omg. The kids don't know how to use computer! They don't know how to use a mouse! They don't know what a command line is! They can't even use a browser. The kids don't know anything about technology if not app on phone:("

And idk dude like. I'm not gonna accuse these people of lying but I am gonna accuse them of being completely biased with absolutely no self reflection at all. You sound like your parents. Like holy shit. First of all, LOTS of us [aged<20] have had computer classes. "Computer lab" was a class all throughout primary school for me, and in grade 8 I had a required course where I learned some Python, had to use Adobe Photoshop, that kind of stuff. I know so many people who go further than that (including myself) and take elective coding classes. Now, it would be incredibly fucking biased of me to conclude that, because almost everyone I know is at the very least functional with a computer and can use a mouse, this means everyone is. Of course not. But thats what these posts do. "I only interact with children who don't know this, therefore no one under 20 knows anything and they're all stupid with their little tik toks" you have a very incomplete sample of kids at this age, and you barely acknowledge it.

Secondly, more on the self reflection bit. This is absolutely a privilege issue. Not a "the kids are so dumbb omggg" issue. Kids don't have computer classes? It's a privilege I was able to get that education. Should we mock people who didn't have music classes growing up and don't know the difference between a rhythm and a beat? If your answer to that is no, then maybe we shouldn't mock kids for not knowing the difference between a search engine and a browser. I know plenty of people bring up the issue to try and get at this, but I cant shake the undertone that all of these posts have in common, which is essentially this air of superiority, like people who grew up with desktop computer access are somehow better than people who didn't, which is just kind of terrible?? Like no joke, I've seen people complaining about uni students who don't really know the ins and outs of programming yet in undergrad and its like,,, did you just not want them to go to school because they didn't know that prior to post secondary? Like, what do you think school is for? Being perfect all the time and telling the teacher that you know everything already? I was under the impression that school was for acquiring knowledge and skills that you previously didnt have.

I also know people who are much older than me, and could have been coding all of their life, but didn't so much as touch a computer until after college, and they learned how to use it, and how to code, and now it's their career! You don't need to learn how computers work when you are five! I grew up scribbling on ms paint and being confused how solitaire worked, and struggling to comprehend minesweeper strategy on a very old version of Windows. I could functionally operate a mouse at the age of one, and that's all privilege. I'm not smarter, or better or more refined or anything, I was literally just born into a family that had desktop computers. And again, to point out the bias, I know way more adults that fit the whole "don't understand it if it's not an app on my phone" than kids.

Finally, a minor nitpick but I feel like it's warranted since the people authouring these posts often present themselves as being more knowledgeable about computers than the average teen? Don't go just saying incorrect bullshit. If you mean PC, say pc. If you mean a desktop computer, or a laptop, say that. Phones are not "fake computers" they just ARE computers. They are computers that have been engineered to be tiny. Their size does not mean they are not computers, it just means they are small. Furthermore, an "app" isn't a "thing u use on a phone." It's literally just the word application shortened. Anytime you use an application that you download on a laptop, or a pc or whatever, you are using an app. Your browser application is an app. I hate to tell you, but it must be said.

Sorry if anything I said in this is straight up wrong, I am not immune to hypocrisy, yadda yadda you know the deal. I also AM NOT an expert on computers, I have (what I, a teenager consider to be) a relatively baseline understanding of computers. And I'm writing this exhausted because I can't sleep. Admittedly on the mobile app, (which explains any typos) but I swear to you that I have a laptop and I use it more than I use my phone most days. I doubt anyone will really see this post but thanks for reading if you got this far I guess. Maybe let's just not fearmonger about "the kids these days" when we should be trying to help kids become functioning adults. I didn't get past my struggles with reading as a kid by being told that I was stupid, or getting mocked. I got past them by finding a book that I loved, and by being encouraged to read by adults who genuinely cared about my education. I really don't see how computers are different, that's all I have to say.

Hi friend! I saw your post about the WIP game and I’m very intrigued by the one titled “timeywimey”

this was meant to be my big snowbaz magnum opus. and one day i really do want to return to it -- i have it all planned out and i think it could be really good! i was actually meaning to write it for COBB but then i was a dumbass and missed the deadline hahaha.

but anyway! the premise is basically that simon and baz, abt a decade post-canon, are in a little bit of a rough patch. not like "oh god are they gonna break up?" rough patch but just like... they're disagreeing abt something. but then thru a series of magical mishaps that involved me heavily researching the French win of the 1998 FIFA World Cup ( i cannot begin to explain this here), they get vaulted back in time to their eighth year of Watford. Not only that: but it's a TIME LOOP. so they're stuck in their 18yo bodies reliving the same day over and over trying to figure out why, and also coping with the fact that there's tension between them. AND ALSO fucking all over campus/living out other sexual fantasies lmfao because how could they not.

anyway. the pre-work i have done on this fic is unhinged. i have an hourly timeline of every event that happens on this day at watford, which includes the weather for each hour. IDK I JUST THINK IT WOULD BE REALLY NEAT IF I ACTUALLY WROTE IT!

i have a tiny bit written, so here's a snippet:

“We should head inside,” I say. “It’s almost four. Time for the rain.” He rolls onto his back so that he can look up at me with a frown. I smooth his hair off his forehead with my palm. Sometimes he complains when I do that — it makes his hair greasy. He’s letting me today. (Hair doesn’t matter lately. Not much matters anymore.) “Can’t you just magic them away?” Baz murmurs. He smirks at me, then pokes me in the stomach. “Worst Chosen One to ever be chosen.” I roll my eyes and pull at his hair in retaliation, but I’m smiling too. “I did move the clouds once,” I say. Baz’s smile drops, his brow furrowing. “What? Why didn’t I know that?” I pull his hair again. He frowns, so I go back to petting. “You don’t know everything about me.” “I bloody well do,” Baz grumbles, sitting up. He turns so that he’s sitting cross-legged in front of me in the grass. I take his hand, unwilling to break contact completely quite yet. (I’m sun-stupid and needy; I’m never ready to break contact.) “I kind of forgot about it until just now,” I say. Baz raises an eyebrow. “You forgot you controlled the weather?” “It was after the Humdrum attacked us. Eighth year, in Hampshire.” I pause, scratching the back of my neck. The memory bubbling up is unpleasant, but not unbearable. Baz’s fingers are cool in my palm. “You told me to run, and I flew away. I could see the forest smoking for the air, so I just sort of… pushed some rainclouds over it.” The sky is a deep grey now. It matches Baz’s eyes, which are open wide. His mouth hangs open just a second before he snaps it shut, shaking his head. “You’re unreal,” he says. I snort. “I’m a failed science experiment.” Baz pushes at my shoulders, and I let myself fall back onto the grass. He crawls on top of me, hovering over me with his hands on either side of my head. “Don’t start that,” he warns, then pressing a hard, brief kiss to my lips. “You’re a fucking miracle.”

Proof that Jin had developed feeling for yi ( in the movie part 2)

6. After Jin is taken by burnish and company we see how once again he wants to make sure himself yi and peng can get home safely and asks them if they can do that and reminder he doesn't really have to make sure yi is safe only really his cousin (at this point in the movie we can tell he actually likes Everest too like yi and peng but he gets swayed into seeing Everest as a monster lowkey because he kidnapped yi as I mentioned in part one) but then he finds out that the actual villan is planning on getting Everest but also hurt yi and peng if they really have to which leads to my next point.

7. Okay so here's were it honestly more about the character development of Jin but something about the montage were we see him give up his phone and allow himself to get dirty without complaining which up till this point in the movie he was more uptight and egotistical with only hints of his true nature of being really caring but why I'm bring this up is because to me(I think yi really made him realize why they should be helping Everest and he doesn't admit/hint at this till the most real proof in the movie along with the ending of the movie which I think is really Senifacant when I talk about the series and it's proof)

8. Finally the main four all are together again while escaping from "burnish and company" though nothing here is hard proof of Jin's possible feeling for yi (I think this is were I got some of the most married couple vibes or fling in the movie at least and honestly their so funny and cute like in these gifs because they would just finish each other's sentences Jin is doing so here but early on in the film yi finished Jin's in the blueberry scene I wanted to add more gifs but tumbler only allows 10 so I making sure that I can use them up properly)

9. After they escape this is when yi violen is broken which means alot for her since her dad also played and he passed away so since Jin knows the situation the best and know her since childhood he goes to talk to her in which he apologizes for what the said during their fight which I mentioned in the first post and yi tries to apologize back but then Jin makes a joke about he is in fact the worst and she was right causing her to smile after all that he and yi head back to (were peng and Everest was and we see that Everest fixed her violen with the strings being his magic fur )overall I love this moment be we really get to see how much he cares for yi through him and not someone else and how this is such a big character moment for yi (even just based of his expressions and body language you'd be able to tell how much he cares about her TELL ME THAT LAST LOOK ISN'T ONE OF LOVE LIKE COME ON!!!!!)

10. After this they continue on their adventure and then they figure out that with Everest fur as the strings of yi's violen are actually magic (ok but I loved the looks that Jin gave the whole time even before they started noticing the magic because its the type of looks I see/give when you'd have a crush on someone but idk I might be stretching on this one) anyways Jin afterwards goes up and gives her a flower and says : " we're so going to the Himalayas " which is contrasting what he would say at the being it the movie when he does this you can tell yi is confused by all the things that are going on but also and her greif is starting to heal that's why I think that momment lingers for a bit then moving on (also I have a whole thing about the flower he gave here because for one it actually probably relates to yi's greif but even Jin's possible feelings for yi which will be it's own post)

After the last 10 points their isn't really much showing proof of Jin's feeling since that's the climax of the film and any tiny moment the movie gave us we already figured out in the first couple of points I made or can be adressed in a future post of mine (honestly the climax is when there's like a tiny bit of proof that yi could also have feelings but I see more signs from her in the series which I'll probably talk about after my flower post and more moments from the film that I didn't post but I thought are Senifacant or cute/credits and even official books + concept art ) but here's a cute moment I love them so much

So I’ve always been curious, and this is just a little something I wonder about for all fanfic writers/readers: When you write your fics, specifically when you’re writing dialogue, how do you hear the characters’ voices? Like for example we know what Sherliam sound like because most of us have watched the anime and know what their Jap VAs sound like. But they’re speaking Japanese so when you write dialogue in english, do you hear it as if their Jap VAs are speaking in fluent english? OR are they talking in their eng dub voices? Because one thing I always love to see in your works is how you write accents and dialects, especially Sherlock’s 👌 And most of the time, I can imagine eng dub Sherlock saying those lines in a very authentic British way. But when it comes to Liam, I mostly hear his Jap VA, and sometimes I even roughly translate the eng dialogue to how it might sound if Soma Saito delivered those lines. So it can get a bit strange for me sometimes that one person is speaking ENGLISH english and the other is too but in a Japanese way?? IDK 😭 Just wanted to know your thoughts!

This is so interesting, it reminds me of the question that goes around sometimes about whether or not you see things clearly in your mind when you imagine them. And I'm kind of surprised by my own answer, because I hadn't thought of it in these terms before, but I just...I don't hear them? My internal narration in general is more like written word than sounds or visuals. Like my brain is a book I'm constantly reading. BUT I do think that, when imagining Sherlock and Liam specifically, if I were trying to hear the sound, I hear Soma Saito's voice for Liam and Theo Devaney's for Sherlock. They both just absolutely aced their assignments and stick in my head as THE voices for those characters (though I'd love Sherlock to be a little more Cockney, it's still really really good.) Which is maybe a little tricky to imagine with the two different languages, but I guess I just hear their cadence and tone?

The voice that's the absolute easiest and most natural for me to write in is the somewhat more formal one. I've complained before about writing Sherlock's accent, because it is NOT my default. On the other hand, writing Mycroft and Albert in my current WIP? Absolute joy, easy as pie. I grew up reading a lot of old novels, which probably explains my relationship to excessive punctuation and long-ass sentences lmao -- look at these banger sentences from The Red-Headed League, Jane Eyre, and Pride & Prejudice respectively:

That is what my head sounds -- or rather reads like -- inside. I have to make an active choice to not just talk like this all the time even irl out loud, because it would drive people bonkers. 😅

Okay, like, Matt’s been in AH videos BEFORE he was even hired. Wasn’t the first Minecraft we saw him in Griffball? And everyone in AH immediately liked him bc he smacked Gavin? Like, we as a community knew axialmatt, and were excited when the guys played one of his maps! And then he and Jeremy (AH fan artist AND fan fiction extraordinaire) get hired to do their DREAM job! And I hate to say a good chunk of the community took a LONG time to warm up to them (especially Matt, but Ray leaving soon after they were hired I think really threw a wrench in things too), but eventually they got comfortable and clicked into their places in AH, and it was like they were there the whole time!

And especially recently, Matt specifically has been KILLING it! He’s so creative, and funny, and his humor is sarcastic and dry, but he’s GENUINELY so kind, you can just tell. Like, this sucks, everyone’s pissed, WB are burning their company to the ground and idk if RT has any way of getting out of there, but they really need to, bc this is only the beginning.

Challenge Accepted and the Randomizers are, imo, the best content in AH right now. I even watched the Raft series, even though I have no interest in that game, bc Matt kept me there! Shark mage was the best! I love the rest of the cast, I really do, but at this point in AH’s life, Matt and Michael are def my fav members. It just sucks, I’m taking it better than when Ray left (I was a damn mess through that;;), but maybe that’s bc he’s still PT? We’ll see how long that lasts, I’ve really been enjoying seeing him in Chilled’s Among Us lobbys, and if he had more time to devote to streaming, he’ll prob hang out with that crowd more, which would be awesome tbh.

Does anyone know if he has a YT VOD channel? I have a thing, I don’t know why, but I don’t like watching livestreams. They make me anxious for whatever reason;; So VODs are a lifesaver for me, so please let me know if you know! 🧡

And yeah, that’s my jumbled thoughts on the matter. WB is ruining RTAH, and it sucks to see, and I really, really, really hope they SOMEHOW get out of that company. Easier said than done, I know, but it just sucks to have had to see all of the obvious change they’ve had to go through since they were put under them, and are still going through. AH cast and content used to be so colorful and bright and happy, but as much as I enjoy how they’ve matured, and still have fun together, the contrast from the past, more care-free AH is drastic. The past however many years, it’s just noticeable how dark their spaces have been, like, it’s kind of dreary looking at them compared to, let’s say, their tiny OG office. Like, that room was always so full of life! And their past few spaces have just been… sad looking.. and also, they’re not quiet about scheduling. Matt and Michael talked about how Sarah had been breathing down their necks for like, half the Wind Waker randomizers bc they were taking too long, and every time they brought it up it bummed because out, bc I HATE they’re being rushed to make content! Idk who thought a Zelda randomizer was going to be less than like, 8 episodes anyway! But that just suggests to me they’re not enjoying playing the game as much as they could be, bc they’re being bitched at about it behind the scenes. Plus other random, too-businesslike things I smell just bc I’m an employee of a big business, and like, I can TELL they don’t have as much freedom as they should have, and it sucks.

like, I really don’t like getting into the “AH was better when it was just the OG cast 😤”, because those people annoy me (I don’t know why they just don’t stop watching if they just complain every video how they hate current AH? But that’s a can of worms I don’t want to open), BUT I do hate what big business has been doing to them, I hope Matt settles into the path that is right for him, the AH members someday gain their freedom back, and WB burns in hell. It’s 3:30am, I got a bit off track with this post, goodnight.

Edit:

After seeing more information come out, Big Yikes, looks like RT has been shitty even before WB sunk their claws in. I know back in 2013 they would make shitty, offensive jokes and call people babies for being upset when they were called out on them, but as I said before, one of the biggest things I’m thankful for is the vast majority of them [AH] have matured, and realized slurs aren’t funny. The community still, for the most part, gets on my nerves for MANY reasons, but I never get too into any kind of community anyway (so I can actually enjoy the media I’m consuming). All that being said, this looks like the beginning of a real big garbage fire, and I just hope all the good RT/AH people find their way to a happier life, and all the shitty assholes get what’s coming to them.

ok i have two ideas but idk which boy SO either of the boys we discussed with someone who's never been in a relationship before? going through firsts with them? <3

I’m going to go with Nolan for this one, out of the two we discussed, as I haven’t written for him in ages and I have many thoughts about those first relationship moments with him:

I love the concept of Nolan Patrick never having had a serious relationship so I’m going to run with this and see where we go. Because there are so many sweet moments I can picture with him and I know I’m going to get carried away here.

First time you hold hands – Nolan seems like the kind of guy who is pretty low-key, not very into PDA because he’s pretty introverted (at least during the season) so the first time you hold hands with him he would definitely blush. Like, straight away, there’s no doubt about it. He’d definitely have a little pleased smile on his face though.

First kiss – initially I was thinking that oh yes Nolan would be shy about a first kiss, but then I started thinking actually once he gets that confidence he’s just going to quietly power through into what he wants. I feel like he’s a kiss goodnight on your doorstep kind of guy, would just casually lean down and kiss you ever so softly, so nonchalantly because he knows what he wants.

First time you sleep together – I feel like Nolan’s such a big guy that he probably doesn’t realise how much space he takes up in a bed, so when you stay over at his for the first time, he would definitely end up wrapped around you like an octopus, no doubt at all. And that sleepy morning smile, that low rough rumble of his voice say hello? Damn.

First time you sleep together – not necessarily coinciding with the first time that you stay over at his or he stays over at yours, but all the same it’s pretty damn special. That boy knows what he looks like so there’s no way he hasn’t slept around a little bit (no judgment here) so when it comes time for that first time? He would go out of his way to make sure it memorable for you in all the right ways.

First time you say I love you – I don’t feel like Nolan would say it first at all. Maybe it’s a little bit of self doubt, but I get the vibe that he would need it said to him before he could make himself vulnerable enough to say it.

First argument – I get the feeling that Patty keeps things pretty close to his chest, so when those little things bubble over, it would definitely be a yelling match. I feel like he’d also leave wherever you are to take a walk/crash on someone’s sofa because he just needs that space, but after that he wouldn’t hesitate to make things up to you/hear you out/discuss things much more calmly.

There are so many more things I have thoughts on but I’m going to round this up with first vacation together – Nolan Patrick in tiny colourful swimshorts rubbing sun cream on your shoulders with those big hands? Bliss. And he wouldn’t complain in the slightest about how much time you spend putting cream on his pale skin either.

You got it spot on with your earlier rant but I think that's what really gets me about the whole Mitch discourse, the specific nature of the insults they're using like 'soft' and 'whiney' etc and how it just feels so insidious. They definitely have an idea in their minds of how a hockey player should look and act and because Mitch isn't masculine enough for them they make assumptions about his work ethic and status inside the locker room rather than his on ice performance, which is what they claim this is really about. I don't think they would call Auston a crybaby even if he outright said he complained to the coach about something. It's kind of funny because Mitch actually is a proper jock he's just... pretty. But it changes their entire perception and reception of him as a player. Even something like smashing his stick is normally received as a display of passion and masculine anger but when he does it he's being petulant and whiney- he can't win. It's like they want to be misogynistic but there's no women in the league so they focus on the men who don't care about presenting particularly macho

i don't think they realize how pitiful and pathetic they are? or is this an extended bit at this point and they want us to peer into their sad lives and scoff :( it's funny because auston is the one who loves to wear pink and has watched gossip girl 3 times and love is blind and knows how to sew (all of which i think is BRILLIANT and celebrate thoroughly btw) and i guaranTEE you if mitch did any of those things these men would grab mitch by the scruff of his neck and fire him into the sun for being girlypop.

also the litigation of the stick breaking thing as if he violated the Geneva Convention is - i...am?? is EVERYONE OKAY? he trotted off to go do it in the hallway in private away from his teammates and coach and fans who were already having a really bad time. like - at its most simple level i see that as considerate behavior from a coworker? i know WAY WAY WAY WAY too many men who make THEIR bad moods EVERYONE ELSE'S FUCKING PROBLEM (including my own father like hello dad) without a single OUNCE of thought about the impression they give or the impact they're having on the people around them, y'know? he clearly wanted that to be a private moment for himself to get his emotions under control because he - duh - uh... CARES about winning, contrary to what these very same fans have been accusing him of for years and years now.

and you're right about the stick breaking! the laughable thing is - like we see players break sticks all the time! and it's FINE. we get it - games get emotional. you get emotional. at least they're getting emotional about their actual jobs at work. why are these ontarian NPC's getting this ANGRY in the middle of THEIR workday about a bunch of men they don't know? go scratch your balls and do YOUR job instead of screaming at willy nylander and mitch marner to play a full 60 minutes ("wah wah well I'm not getting paid $11M like marner is" they'll cry. ok then go out there and hustle and GRINDSET your way into making $11M instead of complaining online like a DIVA BABY, bro? like bro, it sounds so simple to me!!! idk! just a thought! throwing it out there!)

as a decade+ fan of geno, i roll my eyes at all this discourse i am vaguely detecting in my peripheral vision (i say this because i refuse to look at any of these angry armchair GM's takes directly. i heard some of them last night and i no longer respect them because most of them are actual idiots desperate for scapegoats and twitter clout to fill their hollow tiny homunculus lives who would shit their sweatpants at the very prospect of coaching 1 pee wee hockey game and are content to sit around having the audacity to say that sheldon keefe should trade marner, play morgan rielly on right wing, and calle jarnkrok on defense. like. that's dumb. i just don't respect you.)

like im sorry to all these whiny babies but PLEASE get back to me when your favorite player and BRILLIANT franchise SUPERSTAR gets moody and sulky and suddenly crosschecks someone in the head and gets suspended for 2 games for no reason. then we can talk.

complaining about changes and the immense stress they bring and also stupid societal standards

Long story short is I wanna cut my hair. My whole life I've been back and forth, very very long hair, then super short hair, back to really long, straight bald at one point... 3ish years I cut my hair when I started T (it had nothing to do with being a Real Boy or whatever I just wanted to) but now it's very long again. I really love my hair, I always have and it's always been the only thing I liked about myself. I also very heavily imparted this on Jay lol I've always cut and colored it myself too cause I dont trust anyone else

I look good with short hair, and I look good with long hair. But long hair is so hard and expensive to keep up with and it's hot and it's a pain to manage. It looks really good though because my hair is very fluffy, curly and thick. I also seriously freeeaakkkkkkkk when my hair touches my face or my neck wrong so it's pretty much always up in a bun or clipped up which is a downside or short hair cause I can't get it out of the way the same way. Can't have cute hair styles. But having cute hairstyles is also kinda a problem. Cause the people I live with are transphobic and they taught the toddler in the house to ask me very inappropriate questions and make stupid ass comments about 'girl hair' all the fucking time like so often I literally just go hungry, run out the front door as fast as possible, or don't go to the bathroom until they leave so no one can say/ask me anything. It's annoying as hell. But it has nothing to do with me wanting to cut my hair, idc about the stupid society standards of my hair equaling my gender. But I don't want THEM to see it as that. I don't want the stupid smug satisfaction. Because I KNOW they'll get the kid to start saying shit. My rm would probably deny that but I know they will, I'm not stupid if they didnt do shit like that the questions and comments wouldntve started in the first place. I want short hair cause it's easier and cheaper to take care of, because it's cute and I look good, plus the summer is coming up and my hair is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo hot every single year But then. Like I have schizophrenia and I very very frequently have hallucinations where I already don't look like myself imagine shaking that off and I REALLY DO LOOK DIFFERENT?! But like I said I've cut, dyed, shaved my hair a shit load of times through out my life! And every time it's been ok in the end. I get over it, it's no big deal in the end and grows back pretty fast, but taking that leap is very, very scary. And idk what to do. cause at this point it's all I think about, just cutting my hair and wanting to and I keep going into the bathroom with my scissors before I shower and brushing out my hair and looking at it but ultimately deciding not to. What am I supposed to do??? Schedule with my therapist and be like hey....... should I cut my hair? No I dont wanna talk about my stress or the austism or whatever I wanna talk about my hair lmao

Life would be so incredible if I could just go back and forth whenever without like, wigs cause then everyone would know of course cause irl you cant cut your hair long and back again. But god that would be incredible

They are soooooo cool looking: Self explanatory. Renji just looks cool, whether he’s a skrunkly little howler monkey or flashing the most ludicrous drip that could only ever look good on him, or when he’s covered in blood, or sleeping in a warehouse in the middle of a blood war. Best-dressed in all of Soul Society, and also Karakura, and Hueco Mundo, and Hell.

They’re deeper than they seem: Like the Ukitake and Kyouraku one, I waffled on whether to choose this one or not, because I think Renji is exactly as deep as the text suggests he is. There is plenty of depth right there on the page. But I think about how Renji might come across to general audiences who don’t have weird Tumblr hyperfixation illnesses of the brain—like, what impression my mom would come away with if she were to watch random episodes of Bleach on TV—and that version of Renji is a less interesting Renji, if perhaps an easy one to end up with.

A bit ago I ended up on a Reddit thread (after Googling "when was the Quincy genocide?"—as one does) that was a bunch of people complaining about how… useless??? Renji???? was???? (Well, they were complaining about both Renji and Hitsugaya, but this post is about Renji.) I mean, I disagree, but I was fascinated by what the thread’s frames of reference were, and what assumptions they were built on. It was a very different world from the one that floats around in my head. It had a lot to do with kill counts and win/lose ratios. I don’t say this because I don’t care about the fighting element of Bleach (I like the fighting quite a bit). But I also feel like if you don’t die, and no one else dies, then that counts as a win for a shinigami. They’re fighting monsters, not participating in some kind of sports tournament. XP Even irrespective of that, though, Renji is easily one of the most capable and dependable out of all of these fuckers, both because he has a giant bone snake AND because he’s "deeper than he seems." Aggressive and quick-acting, yes, but also kind of a planner? He clearly thinks about all of these things a lot. He thinks a lot about both bone snake things and about things in general. And he has about 80% of all the interpersonal skills in the entire Gotei. He has character depth and roster depth.

Didn’t Get Enough Screen Time: Okay Renji probably got a lot of screen time, but I feel like we could have done with more, right? Always more. He is in my Top 5 Favorite Characters, which obviously means I’m completely unbiased when it comes to how much Renji I think should exist. Where’s my filler episode about Renji instituting the 6th Division Caper Chart, where’s the futsal episode (don’t you dare @ me, Episode 132), and idk, I would have loved to have seen him have more interesting things to do in the Hueco Mundo arc. That was a great arc for Rukia, Orihime, and Ichigo, but I don’t really remember what anyone else got to do (minus Byakuya, but I attach that to Rukia). I mean, Renji looked good in a travel cloak, so there’s that. But if that arc lacked for something it was probably in excellent and plentiful Renji content, I guess? For comparison, please bear in mind exactly how many chapters we spent on that ELEPHANT ARRANCAR GUY.

They are So Cool Looking/If They Were Real I Would be Afraid/Why Do They Look Like That: We all know Renji looks cool. 90% of the time, he’s the one bringing the swag. He looks awesome, and honestly I think he knows it. At the same time, you have to admit he looks terrifying. He is 6’2”, built like a brick wall, has flaming red hair, and intimidating tattoos. He also works as the equivalent of a Soul Society cop. If I were to just meet this guy on the street, I’d be afraid. This also brings up the age old question — why does he look like that. What’s with the tattoos that he is so proud of, but also very sensitive about? I’ve seen lots of head canons about Renji’s tattoos and I think they’re all very fun to consider. (But also lol consider that maybe the tattoos are something that happens every time Renji gets drunk. It’s like a series of low inhibition decisions are just being displayed for the world to see, but deep down he never would’ve gotten them if some part of him didn’t also think they were awesome.)

They’re Deeper Than They Seem: I’m a bit conflicted on this, because I don’t necessarily think Renji is any deeper than he is presented in the series. Which is not to say he doesn’t have plenty of depth. But I also think this because I have spent a long long long time thinking about Renji and picking apart his every appearance, and I don’t think most people have spent quite so much time doing so. During my first brush with Bleach, Renji was one of my favorite characters, but it was because he looked cool and acted flashy and beat people up. He has a freakin awesome zanpakuto that’s a skeleton snake! It wasn’t until this time around that I began to appreciate Renji for his thoughtfulness, leadership skills, and friendship. I’ve mentioned this before, but one of my favorite Renji moments is when he has the group do an old-fashioned team chant in Hueco Mundo. It’s so defining for how conceive of him, and why I think there’s a lot more to him than initially meets the eye.

They’re Like a Blorbo/They Didn’t Get Enough Screen Time: Look, I love Renji. He’s definitely in my Top 5 Characters. I might even go so far as to say Top 3? I spend a lot of my idle time thinking about him just because. And we have plenty of Renji screen time, but I could always do with more. Like, I would love to see more about how he spent his time in 11th. Or, as whipplefilter said FUTSAL EPISODE.

Free Space: I’d love to learn more about his relationship with Byakuya. Because at the time story starts, Renji has been Byakuya’s vice captain for what, a month? And even by the end of the series, it’s barely been a couple of years. In the shinigami scheme of things, that is a relatively new relationship (consider how long Yamamoto and Sasakibe were working together). I’ve seen quite a lot of fic that touches on how Renji’s presence influences Byakuya, but how much does Byakuya influence Renji? Certainly Byakuya has influenced Renji quite a bit from afar (in fact Byakuya was a major contributor in Renji’s life trajectory for 40yrs), but that was more Renji’s conception of Byakuya. Now that Renji works with real flesh-and-blood Byakuya, what’s changed?

They Work Better as Part of a Dynamic: Don’t get me wrong, I think Renji stands his own perfectly well as an individual agent. To be honest, his fighting style and zanpakutou type don’t really lend themselves all that well to group fighting. BUT, I love Renji in a team. Hueco Mundo Team Chant. Renji’s futsal team. I really love the Ishida & Renji vs Szayelaporro fight because of the teamwork involved. These two barely know each other, but they make it work (largely because of Renji, I think). Now imagine what Renji and Byakuya could look like 5-10yrs down the line. I still think Hitsugaya and Matsumoto are Captain/Vice-Captain Teamwork #goals, but I’d love to imagine a future where Byakuya and Renji have conceived of some kind of Senbonzakura/Zabimaru bone-snake/cherry blossom tornado or something.

I saw the Mario movie yesterday and honestly it was really good! I give it like an 8/10.

Unfortunately I missed the first couple minutes or so of the movie because the theater was lined up with people, so it took a bit to actually get in haha. My friends and I all went dressed as Mario/Luigi too, which was awesome.

tl;dr the Mario is very good and I want to see more

I was kind of expecting Chris Pratt's Mario to be not great, but surprisingly Fred Armisen's Cranky Kong was even worse. The only voice in the movie where I was like "wow this really doesn't fit." Now that I've seen the full movie rather than just the trailers I can tell that Chris Pratt at least tried. I still think that someone else probably would have fit better, but he wasn't horrible. Like even Charlie Day as Luigi and Seth Rogen as DK were pretty much just their regular voices, they still kinda fit somehow. Keagan-Michael Key's Toad and Kevin Michael Richardson's Kamek were spot on. Anya Taylor-Joy's Peach was serviceable—she sounds like a girl. And Jack Black's Bowser was freaking amazing. If I could tweak it a little bit to be pitched down slightly and maybe more growly then I think it would've been absolutely perfect, but as is I think he did a fantastic job. Charles Martinet as Giuseppe (basically Mario's design as Jump Man from the original Donkey Kong arcade game) was so great, and casting him as the Mario Bros' dad was a great choice.

The score was brilliantly done, the direction of having Koji Kondo as a composing consultant was an excellent choice, wouldn't have had it any other way. While I figured at least one pop song to show up, I think five has more than I was more than I was expecting. I'm not exactly bothered by it, but it was very noticeable haha. Also I wasn't expecting (yet not surprised) by the full on musical number that Bowser did performed by Jack Black. It was great lol, well done and got me to laugh. Also the DK rap was a welcome surprise, although Grant Kirkhope went uncredited which kinda sucks. Plus all the sound effects were great too.

The story wasn't intricate, and I keep hearing this as a complaint, but it's a Super Mario Bros. movie so idk what people were expecting on that front. It was a really fun ride from start to finish and I actually already want to watch it again. It's a great kid's movie and all the details, references, and easter eggs they put in for the fans of the series are greatly appreciated too. I wasn't expecting them to show so much of the Mario Bros' family or Peach's origins (which is to say not much, but I wasn't expecting any at all. And I also wasn't expecting them to show where the blue shells come from, so that's neat. I'm mildly disappointed at how large a chunk of the movie Luigi was captured. I understand they wanted someone to get captured because that's kind of Bowser's thing and they probably wanted Peach to shine on her own and do girl boss things, but I'm just disappointed that he was in a cage for like most of the movie.

The animation was also really well done if you were worried about that. I've seen some critics complain about that, but it almost feels like they watched a different movie as far as that point goes. The lighting was spectacular, the screen was almost always packed with detail, and the characters were expressive.

One last tiny gripe: Hearing the koopas being referred to as turtles more than once felt off to me. I know this complaint is such a nerdy one, but Nintendo has always gone out of their way to specifically call them koopas and not turtles. I usually only ever hear people call them turtles when it's someone who only vaguely knows about Mario. Having Mario call them turtles kinda makes sense since he's from Brooklyn transported to the Mushroom Kingdom, but Peach and even Bowser himself referred to them as turtles which was weird to me.

it is worth noting that i would simply be entirely unable to get into minecraft if i was introduced to it today. the old easy cooldownless combat was necessary to me as an on-ramp. now the only officially endorsed as correct and up to date version of this game whose playerbase includes a huge contingent of clumsy children has this hard combat just seems bananas.

(some of this was the only first person game i had even tried to play previously was halo at my friend's house in middle school and he kept getting mad at me for struggling with the controls. i suspect any game that needs two directional inputs and hard-needs the granularity of sticks/mice for both of them will always be permanently inaccessible to me, which is why hbomb saying "just don't lock on and control the camera manually mid fight, idiot" in that dark souls video kind of rankles me a bit even if on balance i think "games should have an easy mode, for Accessibility" is condescending and also anti-ArtSpecificity)

idk “this game gets too easy once you know what you are doing” feels better addressed by adding harder lategame challenges or just acknowledging that it's supposed to get that easy bc it's about mastery over your environment than just fucking patching an allegedly finished product to require 3-4 times the dexterity it used to to fight tiny groups of the most basic enemies.

like i don't want to come across as hating all reflexy games because i reckon my critique of factorio combat possibly came off like that. i beat the pantheon of hallownest and had a generally good time of it. i would still be pissed if they made you solve equations in the boss fights because a group of deranged players were complaining about how the hardest mathematical challenge in the game was budgeting your geo

AU rant AU rant AU RANT tell me about the Chrysijacks AU that came to mind once you finished reading this ask 👀

OKAY SO THIS IS KINDA HARD TO EXPLAIN, BUT!!! i’ve been playing with chrysi and jacks being childhood….. acquaintances, at the very least. they weren’t rlly friendly to each other, so i wouldn’t describe them as friends, but they sure did spend a lot of time together.

jacks was a new fate that was made by ???? idk, it’s just like he was born a fate (versus the actual canon, where i think he was made a fate as a young man… regretfully, i can only have this confirmed via the new book…. :(( but at least i get new jacks info from it) and chrysi’s fate-adjacent. since they’re close to each other’s age, they were engaged since they were young. mistress luck acts as jacks’s guardian—she’s overlooking his development into a full-grown fate—and she encourages all the fights between jacks and chrysi, since she thinks it will help develop jacks’s cruelty and ruthlessness. she doesn’t like that he’s the prince of hearts, because she thinks that’ll make him a weak fate.

anyway, you’d think the kid that’s a fate causes the most trouble. nope! chrysi gets jacks into a lot of trouble—but since she’s not a fate, and since she’s a charming little kid, she always has jacks take the fall for whatever chaos she causes. this clearly pisses jacks off quite a bit, so when they’re kids, there are many times where they get into a scuffle. (just to be clear, jacks didn’t start the scuffle at all!! he just will complain / be mean to chrysi, and she’ll respond by fucking launching herself at him and biting and kicking. jacks calls her a feral girl-thing instead of her name because of it.)

ACTUALLY, HERE’S SOMETHING THAT DEMONSTRATES HOW ALL THAT CHILDHOOD STUFF WORKS:

anywayyyy, this continues until they’re abt 14—both of their families keep shoving them together, despite the continuous disastrous results—before chrysi’s shipped off elsewhere for a more “well-rounded” education (which is rlly code for her older sister trying to cover up a scandal of chrysi’s. she wants chrysi to come back a proper young girl.)

before she goes, however, she and jacks make a deal where they’ll happily break off their engagement if the other finds someone else to get married to. jacks leaps on this deal, since um. chrysi’s been tormenting him for years. find someone else? hell yeah, of course he’ll do that.

tiny detail jacks forgot: his kiss kills ppl. he actually never tested it on chrysi before, but i think his hope was that if their engagement ever went through, he’d kill chrysi with his kiss at the wedding.

and so jacks becomes notorious for burning through fiancées while chrysi’s off “learning” (little did nessa know that chrysi’s now hanging out in graveyards unattended—she became friends with many a ghost in the meantime 🥰—and hunting ghouls and the like).

by the time they reunite at the age of 22, both of them have been largely unsuccessful with finding someone to marry them. chrysi fell in love with a boy that, uh, did not like her fate-adjacent powers (more on that later), and so she’s not so happy about talking about fiancés, and jacks has. killed all of his. some on accident, some on purpose.

they both aren’t happy with the situation.

jacks doesn’t even know chrysi’s back from her “education” until she’s at one of his parties. he’s courting tella, turns a corner, and almost fucking screams when he sees chrysi hanging out, holding one of his special apples. she thinks it’s very funny.

actually, he doesn’t recognize her at first either 😭 he’s flirting with her (or threatening her. you can never tell with him), much to her amusement. eventually jacks catches on, and he’s horrified that he didn’t recognize her.

they’re both irritated that the other hasn’t found anyone yet (jacks could’ve sworn chrysi would succeeded in seducing that tris boy. chrysi immediately shuts that down, and jacks is suddenly concerned he’s going to be bitten by chrysi again), so they SUPER promise that they’ll find a way to break off their engagement.

SO. A LOT OF STUFF STARTS GOING DOWN. because jacks is doing his jacks thing—scheming for… what purpose? his own amusement? okay—and chrysi’s hiding things from him. which isn’t new, but it bothers jacks a lot more now, for a reason he can’t quite put his finger on.

ANYWAY, TURNS OUT that while chrysi was away, she started to develop powers similar to jacks—but rather than use love to her advantage, it’s fear. chrysi’s disgusted with herself for being able to do this. it terrified tris (for supernatural reasons and for normal reasons) and that’s why he broke up with her. and in addition to that, chrysi got the attention of a certain elias bloom. so she’s been dealing with a stalker and her new horrifying powers.

so jacks has his whole attempt of an engagement with tella, he’s worrying abt chrysi at the same time (but he swears he’s not actually worried about her), and chrysi’s dealing with the fact that she might be turning a little more into a fate than simply remaining “fate-adjacent”.

i don’t rlly have anything planned for right here, tbh. my thoughts pick up where jacks realizes he’s actually in love with chrysi, BUT APPARENTLY stalker elias bloom finds a way to break off jacks’s and chrysi’s engagement by getting engaged to chrysi (?? chrysi didn’t agree to it, so jacks is even more confused—since she’ll make it very clear that she only does what she wants to do). jacks immediately starts scheming (w a purpose this time!!) and yeah!!! yeah. idk where this is going BUT I WANT ELIAS TO TRAP JACKS IN A CARD AGAIN 🖤🖤🖤

mostly i wanted to explore jacks being a kid, so the most i have planned is the kid stuff 🥰

AU in which Zuko is painfully aware that his dad is an asshole and decides to vibe on his ship rather than chasing Aang-

rewatching ALTA rn (cough quarantine really do be like that) and- I cant help but laugh when watching Zuko act like a spoiled brat with heavy daddy-issues throughout the first season, knowing how awkward he’ll become later on (”Zuko here” is all I’m gonna say rip-)

now, instead of waiting for uncle Iroh to spill the tea (no pun intended) about his scar and chasing the avatar without telling his crew a word about wHY he’s so hellbent on steering his ship all over the fucking world to chase a ghost... Zuko’s just aware of why exactly he was put on this ship and decides “well, might as well enjoy the ride”

One of the first things he does after boarding the ship (after waiting for his injury to heal rip) is ask Iroh or Lieutenant Jee to cut his hair for him, since,,,, well he’s a banished prince that was sent out to chase a ghost,,, no real reason to cling onto the illusion of royality any longer, is there? so off with the hair-knot

*cue tiny, 13 year old Zuko with a bandaged eye and freshly shorn head walking up to the ship-railing and chucking his hair overboard. he waves the severed hair-knot goodbye, Uncle Iroh just brews himself another cup of calming tea-*

He knows his dad’s not expecting him to come back, or... even wants him back, for that matter.

“Sir, where is our next course leading?”

“Idk, you decide.”

Either spends his time holed up in his private quarters or fucks around on the ports whenever the ship needs to stop for supplies. Instead of spending his ‘pocket money’ on anything that could help him find the avatar he just buys whatever crap would unnerve the crew the most. (last time they let him run off on his own he came back with 67 tiny, wooden sky-bison figurines and has hidden them all over the ship. It’s been 3 years and the crew is still finding bisons hidden in their belongings.)

If it weren’t for the nasty scar you’d just assume he’s the bastard-child of one of his crew-members they’re letting tag along, not, y’know, the crown-prince of the fire-nation.

He still trains a lot- just not to capture the avatar. Just because there’s literally nothing else to do on the ship-

Because he doesn’t have such a nasty temper, the crew doesn’t wanna throw him overboard all the fucking time. Instead they just all collectively decided that they’re adopting the brat- no one’s sure how Iroh feels about suddenly having to share his nephew with 20-something sailors, but no one caught him complaining so far.

Zuko can and will take advantage of that. Watch him yell “Uncle!” on the main bridge and grin like a demon as he sees 5 old sailors’ head snap around and give him a concerned look.

His dad may be an asshole but at the very least he got 20 new uncles-

People tend to recognoze him, because... uh. Well. When he was freshly banished he easily took offense when he was recognized as the banished prince of the firenation, even in the middle of bumfuck-nowhere.... as he grew older Zuko just came up with creative ways to change the topic.

“Nah, his scar’s on the other side.”

“Oh, no, I was just seeing a firenation-girl for a while and learned the hard way why you shouldn’t get them too excited in bed.”

“A scar? What scar- OH MY GOD UNCLE WHY CAN’T I SEE???”

When he eventually stumbles into team avatar, he *could* technically capture the avatar and bring him to the firelord to restore his honor and reclaim his throne... but he’d rather fuck with his old man for a bit.

Cue him inviting them onboard to play Pai sho with uncle. Zuko and Sokka going around, terrorizing the locals with Sokka’s terrible humor and Zuko’s scar. Toph and Zuko befriending each other, using the excuse “We only have one eye between the two of us.” whenever they end up in deadly situations together-

He sleeps in the rhino-pen. No real reason behind it, it just terrifies Lieutenant Jee and if anything brings Zuko joy, it’s terrorizing his crew by endangering himself in the most creative ways
