Final Fantasy VII Remake is garbage Part 2
And here's why
(7:57:47) Totally not inspired by Hbomberguy Note : this is a continuation of a repost of my twitter post with a few fixes here and there.
Chapter 4 : I'm a writer (Alan Wake, a writer)
Again, I really like what they did with the "timeline mixing". What I'm not a fan of are the TURKS. Already in Advent Children (the og one, not the Complete), I had TONS of problems seeing Reno & Rude hanging with Cloud and co. Like, "Hey, let's totally forget that you murdered thousands of civilians with the pillar including our friends Jessie, Biggs and Wedge ! ❤️". Advent Children Complete did acknowledge Reno & Rude still feeling that they can't be forgiven for what they have done and hope that someday they'll find a way for a redemption. It doesn't fix everything but it is still a massive improvement.
But in FF 7R ? Reno & Rude feel a bit guilt and then its ok, because Tseng says something "deep" (lol no). It's supposed to show that what Reno & Rude did actually hurt them and it is really troubling them. But nah, Tseng says "Well if you haven't done this, somebody else would've done it, so you helped someone, actually !". Yeah, fuck off Tseng. Reverse psychology my ass. Oh and speaking of the pillar.
Chapter 5 : La mu-si-que ! Oui, la musique !
When my brother played Secret of Mana for the first time with me, we let the game at the title screen for a moment because we saw many nice animations or story elements by just doing this in games like A Link To The Past or Link's Awakening. I was in awe with the Secret of Mana's title theme and the beautiful (yet very pixelated and compressed) artwork revealed (and the music goes even harder at that moment). So I did this too with FF 7 the first time I played it and got to hear the Prelude. And off course, when the music goes for the second part, I loved every bit of it.
When I was told that The Prelude was a very recurring theme in the series, I wanted to hear all versions of it. It's that important to me. I LOVE this theme. And while it's rendition in the remake is good, it's nowhere near the impact it had in the OG game.
And then there's the covers in FF 7 Remake. All around the maps, you can hear and purchase covers from the original game. And wether you purchase it or not, you are forced to hear it whenever you get close to where you can obtain the song. And they SUCK. They suck so badly. The Prelude cover is horrendous. It makes the FF X Prelude look like it's good ! None of the cover works aside for "Oh you hear ? It's that theme butchered from OG FF 7 !". But you know, it's just my opinion, people love it, I don't. But there's something I'm sure people agree.
The fall of the Sector 7 plate is a big emotional moment in the original game. Seeing the plate fall is showing that despite all your efforts, you failed. Your friends died and all of the citizens under the plate and on the plate died too. The CG animation in OG FF7 goes with no music, just a cold, silent, horrible depiction of thousands dying. And at the end, you see the Shinra President from behind, looking at the devastation from his window while listening to an opera music, the ONLY music you hear.
It shows how massively separated from the horror he is. He is listening to music. Outside his office, the sound of people dying is covered by explosions and then a terrible silence. This is incredible, especially for a 1997 videogame.
So off course the remake completely fucks this. In the remake, you get to hear, from start to finish, a rocky techno shit while thousands of people are dying and Wedge is supposedly crushed to death with his cats. WOW, DUDE ! And this time you actually see the President's face and he is smiling. But you don't hear the opera song.
Conclusion
The Nomurism are so full of their asses they can't even be bothered to respect "Show, don't tell". You don't have to see that he is smiling, you know it just by seeing him watching this with the opera music in the background ! It was more than enough to understand that he enjoyed what happened. What he ordered. What he did. Fuck this remake.
The same exact thing happened with Crisis Core's depiction of Zack's death versus Zack's death in OG FF 7. The exact same thing. A totally Overdrive-Nomurism Cosmo Nevismitical moment, if you will. The man can't help but make overtly complicated stories, UI, menus with pompous terms, pretentious writing (oh look, people are playing chess in KH, wow, so original) and it's not helped when his buddy from FF XIII is giving 80% of the lore and plot in the Codex you have to read instead of, you know, SHOWING IT.
Advent Children was the moment I gave up on Nomura and also made me stop watching shonens because I felt like they were all doing the exact same thing (oh, a tsundere, oh a geek, oh a woman with massive breasts, oh a pervert, oh a weird man with opaque glasses reajusting it all the time and saying "Fufufu" like a creep).
So for all of this, I didn't liked FF 7 Remake, a game I did twice (Steam & PS5).
Final note : Look at the pretty keys ! / 10

I'm tryna be better at writing Finn - what are your favourite Finn moments in the entire series that show his personality the best? Or just your favourite Finn moments in general.
I literally love all of his moments in the series. I'm kinda blurry with episodes titles especially when it comes to s3 and s4... but I'll try:
Pilot - this is a good episode that introduces us to Finn and his aspirations and some of his fears.
Showmance - continues to develop Finn and we see what he wants to be. He looks up to Rachel because she speaks her mind and isn't afraid to be who she is.
Aca-fellas - or the introduction to Sassy!Finn.
The Rhodes Not Taken - this is a very good Finchel episode in general, but it also shows us Finn going against his moral values to get what he thinks he wants. We do see that Finn holds himself to a different standard than he holds other people. Like if Rachel played him the way he did her, he wouldn't be happy or willing to forgive her as easily. But it's also the episode where he confirms he likes Rachel and wants to be with her.
Vitamin D - this is a very Finn-centric episode. We get to see a lot of his inner thoughts and his pressures and the way he views life. So this is very helpful to watch for the entire episode. Oh and we get to see whiny!Finn. I love him.
Mattress - we see Finn wanting to do the right thing by being in the picture but chickening out (ha!) because he's still worried about his image. He wants to be a leader, but he's not ready to put himself out there.
Sectionals - we get to see Finn fully step into his leader position in this episode. He's hurt by what Quinn (🤢) and Puck did to him, but in the end he puts all that aside because he has to be there for his team. Even though everyone on his team, except for Rachel, knew the truth but decided to lie to him. Tbh idk why Finn was friends with anyone but Rachel. They all sucked so much and were so horrible to him. But anyway, and we see Finn bringing his team together and saving them out of their slump. Like we really see that Finn is the leader of the club.
Hell-O - this shows Finn in a negative light but that is good too. He's kinda back to being concerned about his image and he's probably experiencing the high of winning Sectionals (we'll see douchey!Finn show up again in Silly Love Songs after another win too) so he thinks he's such a stud and that he can do so much better than just Rachel. And the important thing about Finn in this episode is him coming to the conclusion that he doesn't want to do better than just Rachel. That Rachel is actually way better than those bitchy popular girls and she's the one that he wants (😏).
Funk - because we see Finn just breaking the law because someone wronged Rachel (we see him doing this again in Feud in s4).
Journey to Regionals (or whatever it's called) - because he just tells Rachel that he loves her. He also has that conversation with her on the staircase that he needed her to be a leader with him for the club. That was a good talk.
Grilled Cheesus - we see Finn's innocent and naive side, which is very important to his character.
Rocky Horror Glee Show - because we see Finn dealing with his body image issues and that's not something we really get to see about male characters. And we do get Rachel telling him that he doesn't have to be super fit or muscular to be attractive and that's important.
Christmas S2 episode - this is peak whiny!Finn!! It's such a painful episode for Finchel, but Finn went full Mariah in this episode and it's great. Like Rachel decorated the auditorium to look like a winter wonderland and Finn was like "I only like real Christmas trees!" I died xD he actually expected her to drag in real trees for him. He's too funny. Finn was like "if she doesn't kill an entire forest for you, is it even love?" Oh and him looking at Rach longingly at the end of the episode and smiling.
Silly Love Songs - we see Finn as a hot mess in this episode. Douchey!Finn is back after he won the game and he does all the wrong things this episode and acts like a tool, which I used to hate, but it's actually very hilarious and a good side to his character because he is a teenager after all. I also like the scene with him and Rachel at the nurse office because you can see that he still loves her the most but he's just a self-destructive dumbass. Him and Santana shared one brain cell that episode and they couldn't decide which one of them should keep it during the episode. So they were both terrible with decisions.
Born This Way - because we see Finn be all about Rachel. So the episode actually feels good for once. He's all about making her feel good about herself and he just shouts it to the entire choir room that Rachel is beautiful, like a king. Just best moment!
Prom Queen - this and Laryngitis (which I didn't mentioned, but it also has very good Finn moments) are peak jealous!Finn. He always gets jealous when Rachel moves on and that's when he wants her the most. I do love him fighting Jesse (🤢) at prom because how dare he dance with Finn's girl? He did it for all of us when he told Jesse to back off. Oh also he's super sassy to Jesse earlier in the dinner scene.
Funeral - because of the F*inn (🤢) break up. Him going off on Q was everything tbh. Like that bitch was losing it insisting they stay together. It was good to hear him admit that he loves Rachel and that he's connected to her in a way he isn't with anyone else. It was finally him making sense of all his feelings and admitting to himself that he doesn't want some breathy, unfeeling, popular girl, but he wants Rachel and no one else. And I'm very happy that he stuck with this decision up until the end of the series.
New York - this is peak simp!Finn. He does everything in this episode to get Rachel back and I love that about him. We've seen him be all about Rachel before, but in this episode it's turned to 11. He's such a Chad for kissing her at the end of Pretending (that he wrote for them). He invented romance in that moment. And then him getting so excited about the kiss afterwards and saying it's the Superman of kisses and it came with its own cape. I love him too much. No other relationship was as iconic. Omg and him asking Rach out in the library at the end. Omg!!! 😍😍😍😍 that was such a Chad move. This is the Chad!Finn episode!
Purple Piano Project - I might be wrong about this, but I think Finn has a monologue in this one where he talks about his future or something. It's really good.
First Time - because we see Finn's insecurities about the future and him at his lowest when he's not selected by Cooter. I also like how he acts with Rachel when she tries to get him to have sex with her. He is the one saying they should wait and that he wants it to be perfect. Plus I like him forgetting that she's vegetarian/vegan whatever (which she is not because she ate pepperoni pizza in S1E5).
Mash-Off - I love this episode so much. And I love the whole fight between Finn and Santana and how they both bring up their own insecurities in order to tear down the other. We also get to see leader!Finn shine through again and sassy!Finn. He's not just Santana's punching bag anymore. He actually retaliates by telling her "You're scared Brittany won't love you back" which destroys Santana because she is scared of that. But Finn is also scared that Rachel won't love him back, that he won't be enough for her. And it's interesting to see him blurt that out and throw Santana's biggest fear (of Britt not loving her back) at her after she hit him with his biggest fear (of not being able to provide for Rachel and having to ride her coattails for the rest of his life). Also I love Finn and Santana's "are you thinking what I'm thinking?" "Yep. Dodgeball!" Idk how they both thought the same thing. I guess they sliced that brain cell in two and they each got a half for this episode.
Yes/No - Finn's proposal to Rachel is everything. I love it so much and he's so sensitive and romantic in that scene.
Saturday Night Glee-ver - this is a very good Finn-centric episode. We once again see Finn unsure about his future, but realizing that the only thing he's certain about is that he wants to be with Rachel. We rarely see male characters on TV wanting to be husbands as their life aspiration, but that's what Finn wants to be. She's the only thing about his life that makes sense and the only thing in his life that makes him happy so he wants to dedicate himself to her. It's perfect.
Heart - Finn and Rachel's fight is everything. And what's even better is how fast they make up after it. It really shows a lot of maturity on both their parts. It shows how much Finn has grown and how serious he is about Rachel this time around, like we've never seen this side of Finn in s1 or s2 (except the finale of s2)
S4 episode - idk which one it is, but Finn outsmarts Sue and records her saying something to blackmail her so she backs off the Glee club. I loved that a lot. It showed cunning!Finn.
I Do - Finn's speech to Rachel is everything in this episode. He's so sure about them being together. It's just so good. Especially his whole "she loves me, she loves me not" routine in the speech too. S4 gave us some really mature Finn moments about his relationship with Rachel. But also some very immature moments, which were honestly ooc af. But his endgame speech to her was amazing and it really shows that she's still his main priority.
Feud - simply because I love Finn beating the crap out of Brody (🤢). Like idk why Donkey Face even tried swinging at Finn. Finn was like twice his size and used to be in the army after being a quarterback in high school. Sooo like idk just bad decisions on his part. But it did give us the hottest scene on TV. Finn was so hot when he said "stay away from my future wife!" Go off King! 👏
With all that being said, you could get away with understanding Finn by just watching all of S1. Because he kinda goes through his entire arc but not in a very in depth way in that season alone. We see him dealing with thinking he's not enough, to being ashamed of being in Glee, wanting to be more than what it is expected of him, wanting Rachel, wanting to be popular again, realizing that popularity isn't what he wants and that he just wants to be happy with Rachel in the end, finally admitting that he wants Rachel and ending up being happy with her. The other seasons are basically them going in depth on what S1 already presented.

"Culture shock": 2009 interview with Rhys Darby about Rocked the Nation 2: 100 New Zealand Pop Culture Stories
from the July 5, 2009 issue of Sunday Star-Times
WHATEVER HAPPENED to Little Ted from Playschool? Where are hick wrestlers The Bushwackers and the infamous Ingham twins now? And just what is there to be proud of in our country's history? Starting on C4 tomorrow, six-part series Rocked the Nation 2: 100 New Zealand Pop Culture Stories attempts to answer these pressing questions and many more using a wealth of historic footage and interviews with almost every semi-famous personality and cultural commentator New Zealand has to offer.
Comedian Rhys Darby, of Flight of the Conchords fame hosts the show, using his naive humour and a few wellplaced expletives to take viewers from the ridiculous to the, well, even more ridiculous. Opening at number 100 with local hero done good Temuera Morrison, we learn that Elemeno P's Dave Gibson thinks Morrison's turn in Star Wars made it "a bit hard to take Maoris in space seriously", while film reviewer Dominic Corry more diplomatically thinks "seeing Tem in that environment helped us accept Kiwis in big budget movies".
Covering the length and breadth of the country, including Hamilton (claim to fame: The Rocky Horror Picture Show) and Invercargill (the arsehole of the world, according to Keith Richards, although mayor Tim Shadbolt swears the Rolling Stones were stoned and really in Dunedin that night) this is an obligatory and highly entertaining look at New Zealand's illustrious identity. Jaquie Brown is responsible for the voiceovers and in her own playful tone leads the show deftly through our most important pop culture moments. So what's number one? You'll have to watch the show to find out but we asked Darby a few questions to get the inside scoop:
Q: Why did you decide you wanted to front this show? What appealed to you about the idea? A: I love pop culture. I think it's important to learn and laugh at our mistakes as a nation. And this is the sort of show the whole family can watch. The parents can smile and remember the pop culture stories and the kids can not only learn stuff but laugh at me being silly between the interview bits. However the thing that really appealed to me about the show was the giant RHYS they made out of polystyrene.
Q: What do these various little factoids about local history tell us about "the New Zealand character"? Is there really such a thing, do you think? A: The most obvious thing that comes out of these wonderful stories is New Zealand's great sense of humour. I think we really are one of the funniest nations in the world and we've just kept it to ourselves. We laugh at ourselves and don't show off about it. That's our character. It's a very dry sense of humour. We don't take ourselves too seriously but on the odd occasion we do and that's usually when sport's involved, then we take ourselves far too seriously but that's OK. It just means we're very passionate people too. So there you have it. That's our character. Dry, funny and passionate.
Q: Working so much overseas yourself, how would you say New Zealanders are perceived outside this country? A: Dry, funny and passionate. But that's only a recent thing. We used to be mainly perceived as nice hard- working farmers who could pour a pint and play bloody good rugby.
Q: Programmes exploiting our national nostalgia are soooo yesterday, don't you think? A: No I'm afraid you're wrong. Who told you that? Some git on Facebook? Shows exploiting our national nostalgia are soooo today man! In fact I'd go as far as to say they are even soooo tomorrow and the day after! Soon shows exploiting our national nostalgia will be the only thing people are twittering about.
Q: Did you guys manage to find that breakdancer with the white gloves from the Patea Maori Club's "Poi E" video? A: Yeah he's now working in a fish 'n' chip shop in Kaikoura.
Rocked the Nation 2: 100 New Zealand Pop Culture Stories, C4, Monday, 8.30pm.

An intriguing post has crossed my dash that says “don’t just recommend media to people solely because it has queer representation: make sure to give some kind of summary or context.” The idea is to flag if the movie/series/game has content that could be uncomfortable or trauma-related. For e.g., I won’t watch a movie with queer characters, no matter how good it is, if one of those characters commits suicide. That’s just one of my own rules for comfortable viewing. (I have heard a similar pattern of argumentation from black Americans: not all of them enjoy watching a movie with a majority black cast if the movie is about the visceral horrors of slavery, so I assume this discussion of tailored recommendation also has some intersectional potency as well.)
I do very much vibe with these requests, but there’s something else about it that I’ve been tossing around in my head for a while. When people mention to me that a piece of media has a) queer representation and b) no suicides (my one plot restriction), that doesn’t tend to be a persuasive recommendation to me. I also want to know If the Movie is Good.
There are lots of ways a movie can be Good, or at least The Kind of Good that Currie Likes. The Handmaiden is good in the traditional sense of quality cinema — extraordinary acting, lovely cinematography, extravagant sets, meticulously romantic plot, and it’s one of my favourite movies of all time ever. Rocky Horror Picture Show is none of those things (and can be uncomfortably transphobic in modern contexts, so it doesn’t really score high on the “representation” card any more) but to me it’s Good because it’s Gothic, campy, catchy, and deeply embedded in queer culture.
The reason I care about this is because I think evaluating movies purely on whether they have good representation will have a few inevitable pitfalls. The first is one discussed in the post I referenced earlier, which points out that “good queer fiction” tends to focus on coming-out narratives and leave genre films by the wayside. Furthermore, if we fall into this trap of assuming that “good” queer representation means good movies, we’re going to inevitably give bad (in the aesthetic sense) works of fiction a pass — of course, “bad” is very subjective, and queer has a long history of embracing camp and so-bad-it’s-good filmmaking. I have heard good things about the representation in Sense8, Black Sails, and Gentleman Jack, but I’ve never actually committed to watching any of them because all people talked about when recommending them to me was representation. The “is it good” question is doubly important for genre narratives, at least for me. Like, Black Sails is a pirate adventure, so while the queer storylines are great, I would also like to know if there are some cool cannon battles. The reason why The Handmaiden is one of my favourite movies ever is because it’s an amazing con movie that just so happens to have adorable lesbians as its centrepiece.
But I think the real problem here is more that if queer representation is “enough” for acclaim, we’re going to get a lot of rainbow-stickered corporate schlock pumped out to attract queer viewers (what I would call a subtler kind of queer baiting). Asking for queer representation and nothing else reduces the queer consumer to a market demographic: to people who will inevitably support massive studios so long as their boxes are checked. We aren’t demanding quality, imagination, surprise, or even appeal in our artistic products; we’re demanding a checklist of tokens. This is especially disappointing to me because queerness is often the inspiration for a lot of very imaginative and revolutionary art, and not all of it is exclusively about love or gender performance. We should be asking for more than representation — we should be asking for good shit!

Pseudo-tagged by the sweet-as-shit @sleepyfacetoughguy to answer these fandom questions:
When did you start watching shameless?
Relatively late, tough I don’t quite remember when. Maybe mid/late S9? It had always been on my radar, but I was deep into some other shows at the time & I knew this one was gonna cut deep so I kept putting it off. Sure enough...
How did you start getting involved in the gallavich fandom?
I’d been creeping for a while, like a fucking... creeper. First on the peripheral sites, looking a fanart & fan-related theories. Then, I finally pulled the trigger on the fanfic *whew* let’s just say shit went real downhill, real quick from there.
Favorite shameless character? (other than IxM).
In a lot of ways, I identify a lot Lip. I'm born & raised in the Los Angeles inner-city. Right on the outskirts of Downtown L.A.’s skid row. This was many of he reasons why I was drawn to Shameless; those first few seasons were like a love letter to the inner-city. In many ways, I was the smart kid who figured shit out way too much & way too early for my own good, just like Lip. And just like Lip, it led to some stupid denial. *yikes* Don’t worry, I managed to get most of my shit together. Most.
(Shit. Sorry. I’m doing Tumblr therapy! LOL!)
What plotline from the show irked you the most?
Fiona magically becoming an alcoholic never sussed out with me; wrong personality type if you ask me.
Gay Jesus.
Ian bottoming for Trevor.
Lip never capitalizing on his intelligence & instead seemingly choosing a blue collar life. Again, wrong personality type.
Favorite line from the show?
Too many to chose from. But, I am particularly fond of the way Ian delivers “Get the fuck out!” As he’s holding/pointing the kill bat against Frank. The delivery Cam chose is reminiscent of an old gangsta rap song that I can’t remember the name of it’s either an N.W.A. or Eazy-E song.
**edit**
I found the song! It’s Boyz-N-The-Hood by Eazy-E. Ha, ha, ha, ha! Y’all can’t peck my research skills; they are impeccable!
Fanfic(s) you can’t stop thinking about (not comprehensive but some initial thoughts):
SO many! A few of them aren’t on Ao3 anymore, which makes me cry. I’ll just type out the first few that pop in my head & apologize to anyone I’ve forgotten. Apologies if some are WIPs.

Fuck there are so many more... I *know* I'm forgetting a lot of important ones. I'm so sorry if I forgot to mention you!
Best concert(s) you’ve been to:
The best concert I have been to lately has been the Rancid/Dropkick Murphys concert I went to this summer.
Not only was it my first concert in a really long time, but it was the first post-pandemic, big crowd thing that I had done. Plus, both bands played the old school shit that I grew up with!
Comfort movie franchise:
LOTR.
Nightmare Before Christmas.
The Crow.
Basically any good samurai shit.
I love the Resident Evil movies 'cause Mila Jovovich & Michelle Rodriguez are hot as shit running around with guns in their hands (Yes, I am a simple creature. So?).
Basically, any comic book movie out there.
Sports movies, especially the Rocky/Creed movies.
Music movies.
Piercings/tattoos:
A Thunderbird in turquoise surrounded by squash blossoms on my upper left bicep in representation of my grandmother. The design was taken from a ring that she wore on her deathbed.
A giant pink and purple dragon back piece. She's supposed to be a female dragon.
A jack o'lantern on my inner right forearm.
Both ears are double pierced. That's all the piercings I will do.
Most rewatched tv show?

Pet peeves:
Ugh. Don't get me started on this... Um, people who cannot say excuse me at the grocery store when you are in their way. Instead, they just stand there and stare at you until you somehow telepathically figure out that you are in their way. Then when you move over, they roll their eyes or give you a dirty look, as if somehow you were supposed to understand that you were in their way without them opening their mouths and simply say, "Excuse me, please."
Random fact about yourself:
I talk too fucking much. It's a sickness.

i saw your post about Charles and what his personality past and part in the story line so i was wondering if u could do the same for vlad? :)
Ah, well, I can at least let you know what I’ve seen so far? I haven’t delved too far into Vlad, and some of his general impressions can be confusing, so I’ll do my best to make it sensible and unbiased! Here you go lovely <33333
Fair warning, there will be mentions of a lot of JPN app content since Vlad and his boys aren’t around much in the ENG app yet.
My general sense of Vlad is basically discount vampire Sasuke Uchiha.
What I mean by this is to say–according to what I’ve read so far–his clan/family were murdered by vampire hunters in cold blood when he was just a young boy. Presumably as a result of that traumatic event, he harbors a sizable enmity towards humanity and kind of lashes out on them in weirdly specific moments of violence. Another aspect of his motivation is something that’s mentioned within Comte’s route; which is that Vlad went through the timespace door on his own one day and allegedly saw a devastated future, where nothing remains of life on earth more or less.
I guess the reason I find him to be so perplexing is that he speaks about his actions in terms of efficiency, while most of the things he does just feel like unhappy outbursts (v often a product of unresolved trauma symptoms, I’d wager.) I also say this because he appears to have no larger pattern to his fury beyond the original event of his loss. Most of the human beings he attacks aren’t much of a threat to him and hurting them really doesn’t bring him any dividends beyond revenge.
For instance, he insists his disdain for humanity and insistence on controlling them is for the sake of ensuring they do not destroy the future–the horrifying wasteland he witnessed when he traveled through the timespace door. However, I’m not really sure how his current movements really speak to that goal? I mean sure, maybe he’s relying on Faust to create an immortal human so that humans will be forced to care because it will be their future too, but he doesn’t allow Faust to draw his pureblood blood for experimenting. (One can most certainly argue this was more about a lack of trust, and perhaps for plenty reason: Faust is vindictive enough to try to turn the tables and exert control over Vlad, or act on his own whims with his findings.) But if that’s the solution he’s waiting on, turning the rivals of the men in the mansion doesn’t really bring him any closer to that vision either? I mean, what good does it do to bring back Gilles de Rais–a prominent French serial killer? How would unleashing him on the populace help humanity “realize the error of it’s short-sighted and wasteful ways” and move to a brighter future?
Can’t help it, I ask these questions as I read.
In Comte’s main story, Comte hammers home that Vlad is not somebody to be taken lightly. One day when MC goes out to buy flowers, Vlad poses as a human florist to sell them to her–which is how Comte finds out he’s in France, and that he’s made contact with MC. When prompted, Comte describes him in a very particular way; and I think people really overlook this when they talk about their relationship. He says that Vlad is frighteningly pure in terms of the way he thinks and acts. The way I understood his description (given what I’ve seen of Vlad) is that Comte really does mean it point blank: Vlad is very simple in terms of why and how he does things. The issue with this is that nuance and context are lost on Vlad as well–and that’s where the problems start to flood in. Vlad is angry at humanity for what they’ve done to him. Baseline? That’s fair, they killed his damn family. However, Vlad thinks that by extension he has the right to decimate the general public and attack people completely uninvolved in his hurt.
And that isn’t right either–it’s ignoring so many factors here. He’s ignoring how much vampires use and toy with humans as pawns, it’s ignoring the massive power imbalance between him and his victims (this really isn’t a case of self-defense most of the time, nobody but Comte/Leo is a sizable threat to him), and he’s ignoring whether or not a person even did anything to deserve his retributive violence. While murder is never okay, it is perhaps more understandable when we see Jeanne’s frenzied and violent belligerence in response to a man who murders a boy’s mother for the sake of his own amusement/convenience. Vlad literally sees almost every single one of the rivals he created begin to heal/improve and murders them in cold blood because they are no longer of any use to him. That’s uh……..that’s a little messed, not gonna lie to you chief.
While part of me understands the efficiency here–he doesn’t want to leave any traces of his involvement, he doesn’t want any loose ends–it’s also just kind of foolish and cruel ultimately. From my understanding of the narrative, all the people he turned had some visible sign that indicated their origin to Comte. So even if he claims it was for the sake of concealment, it was more likely about his personal convenience. Which…..also yikes.
[Comte clearly does not trust Vlad to be reasonable, and I think there’s plenty of good reason enumerated above, but I actually don’t sense quite so much hatred? I think he’s just given up on the idea of Vlad growing up, even if he doesn’t like giving up on people. And considering Vlad’s behavior, I think it’s overkill to say that Comte just abandons him because he doesn’t care lmao. Even when Comte expresses real anger at the end of his own route, it was more because Vlad was fine with endangering MC’s life just to get back at him. I think Comte’s unhappiness with Vlad has more to do with Vlad’s treatment of human life as meaningless and worthless. It’s fascinating but also kind of sad? Vlad’s traumatic experience results in behavior that is a direct exacerbation of Comte’s trauma, and as such--no matter their potentially fond history--they can’t stomach each other.]
In Comte’s route, Vlad also has Shakespeare abduct MC and take her to the cathedral. Later on in the castle, we see an immediate display of Vlad’s shocking powers: he has the ability to manipulate people’s desires/thoughts. I’m not exactly sure how this works, but he is able to give MC visions of the mansion and Comte coming on to her–which shocks her into realizing it’s all just a dream. It’s not reality; it’s all manufactured by Vlad.
After that...weird introductory note...Vlad gives MC the rundown on his life together with Comte, which as always is subject to a question of bias. My assumption is that he did not lie, only because he was trying to convince MC that he was “right.” Furthermore, he does not omit the most damning evidence of his erroneous judgement, which suggests a continued inability for him to see where he went wrong.
We get a series of three flashbacks. The first is them as young kids. I don’t know if Vlad had already experienced the horrors of his family being destroyed, but this particular flashback focuses on Comte. His parents, in an effort to teach him that vampires and humans have no ability to co-exist, send away all of his teachers/mentors/nannies/the servants--pretty much everyone and anyone he was closely bonded to. Think about it this way: we can see that Comte is very sociable and affectionate by nature. He was living in a house full of people, all of whom cared about him and looked after him in their own way. Now the house is entirely empty. Naturally Comte is very very upset, and Vlad appears to try to cheer him up with little success.
[When I look back on this scene I don’t think I initially registered the sheer dissonance of Vlad’s reaction, versus Comte’s catatonic misery. There was a very solemn feeling to that memory, and the correct choice in terms of extending comfort is to hold his hand believe it or not. There is a sense that he feels very alone. When young boy Vlad enters one can argue that it was the proper thing to do; he was trying to cheer up his playmate and friend. But at the same time, I think I need to double check. Because I’m beginning to wonder if I was wrong. What if Vlad was happy to see someone as alone as him, and that joy is accordingly dissonant for that reason? He can’t see what Comte needs or how he’s hurting because he’s so glad he isn’t alone anymore in a way.]
The second flashback is the war nurse scene that I have spoken at length about. The important thing to focus on here is Vlad’s surprise that Comte would opt out of turning her out of respect for her wishes. The way Vlad frames the situation is starkly different from Comte’s. Comte sees himself as an outsider, somebody who invaded her life as a result of the timespace door and therefore has no right to suddenly change the course of her fate. He had no idea if she even wanted to live (considering the horrors she’d have to cope with and remember) or leave that time period at all, for that matter (considering the only thing keeping her going was helping the wounded/victims). Comte really was listening to everything she had to say, and he was taking her concerns and motivations seriously.
Vlad simply says: if you want her, take her. It’s as simple as that for him. And in one way that’s not entirely wrong--assuming Comte would have every intention of looking after her and actually cares a lot about her. But what’s being ignored here is her agency and the fact that they really don’t know each other that well? Something like that could begin and be rocky, if it doesn’t end in complete disaster. Worse, I get the feeling Vlad is perfectly fine with the notion of turning her and if things don’t work out, just kill her or get rid of her. Again, the simplistic thinking comes into play here: it ultimately comes down to Vlad being self-centered. He’s thinking only in terms of satisfying his needs, he doesn’t seem to have any concept of a larger pair or group feeling. There’s an inability to bend/be flexible for the sake of maintaining a greater harmonious feeling.
[For the record, I don’t think this makes him irredeemable? Only that it makes it very hard to live with him or love him, probably. There’s an inability to live at a joint pace? It’s always answering to what he wants without room for anything else most of the time, which to me is not living and it’s not love ;;;;]
Following their escape back to their own time, Vlad explains how he wants to use the door to turn geniuses and control humanity. He eventually wants to create a surveillance state, which would mean everyone is forced to move with his explicit approval, more or less. (He almost reminds me of Louis XIV, can’t tell if that’s what they were going for.) I have my doubts that his abilities could extend that far, but human history shows us that we are plenty susceptible to fascist and totalitarian rhetoric. In a shocking display of anger, Comte draws the line at controlling humanity and forcing them into a regime in which, and this is Vlad’s description not mine, “we (purebloods) would be like kings.” There’s definitely a concept of evolutionary superiority at play here, which echoes what I mentioned earlier; vampires seem to have this awareness that they’re apex predators in a sense, and enjoy the power that comes with that. Unfortunately, that probably makes for a fairly toxic/uncomfortable larger species culture, which is exactly what Comte and Leo hate lmao.
Vlad does not seem to find any issue with this sort of outlook, and asks MC to decide which of them--Vlad or Comte--is right. Who is more realistic, who best understands the future? As expected the MC replies that it's Comte, and Vlad goes from beseeching to big mad at record speed. He's p much that gif of the teddy bear that smacks its head down on the tables and then has the angry eyebrows.
This is where Comte intervenes, firing a warning shot that grazes Vlad's cheek and demanding he let MC go. In response, Vlad shoves MC into the turbulent timespace door--p much guaranteeing MC's death. (Essentially timespace is a void of sorts, a human being could never survive in that environment for long. Vlad fully knew this, and yeeted her anyway.)
So uh, yeah. Disagreement? Death. Moving on? Death. Nuanced approach to reality? Death. Beginning to think he doesn't really have a lot of patience or open-mindedness or any other kind of problem-solving approach.
He raises flowers and gardens like a fiend, and he openly plucks any single flower with a blemished leaf. Even if a single petal is slightly damaged, it will be removed and destroyed. So one could argue his extremism reflects a kind of perfectionism as well. No room for errors or troublesome dissent. No ugliness of any kind. I mean in all of his interactions with Faust and Charles this is the overt undertone. Don't ask more of me than I'm willing to give. Behave like good children, mommy's busy. Is that insubordination? boss music begins
One thing I actually don't understand very well is his decision making in Dazai's route. Dazai finds out about what Vlad's doing in a nanosecond when he senses MC is in danger, and yet Vlad makes absolutely no move to eliminate Dazai? He just watches from the shadows. Even when Dazai grills Charles about his loyalty to Vlad, no retribution.
My best guess for this specific situation is that Vlad does derive some level of satisfaction thwarting the future of human beings/former humans. Dazai--being somebody with no great desire to live, no rivals to speak of as far as we can tell, and no larger aspirations--is a life that is easily extinguished. There's no satisfaction in it. When Vlad's clan was murdered and he saw the future decimated, it could be that he felt humans had invaded and eradicated every potentiality that was important to him. Where he might have lived happily with his family, that future was ripped from his grasp. Where he might enjoy his flowers and the creation of an immortal for the rest of conceivable time, that too was ripped from his grasp with a desolate future.
So much about who Vlad is is about control, so it's very possible his lashing out is an extension of that. Dazai does not awaken any of the disdain he feels, and he does not succeed in overthrowing Vlad's control over Charles, so Vlad simply lurks in silence.
And last but not least, I've seen the preview to Vlad's newest birthday event story. The contents are incredibly revealing, in that MC wishing him a happy birthday and offering him a gift has him saying that it was "the best birthday ever." Granted idk if that’s sweet or just...beyond sad, but here we are. It’s only compounding my curiosity about the wound on his chest--I really do wonder if he was attacked and locked away by vampire hunters or hostile human beings or something. I say that only because that line speaks to a lot of isolation, and given how little he seems to care about turning people/subjecting them to his whims it feels odd. Why the isolation or lack of people who care about him? Is it a perceived lack where his actions alienated all the people who wanted to be close to him, or is it a more involuntary lack?
When she says let’s celebrate again next year, he seems a pleasantly shocked by the notion, and remarks “Ah yes, it’s a promise c:”. The preview was also mega horny: “You make me feel so loved, I don’t think I can be gentle with you tonight. If you enjoy it so much, then I won’t stop. I want to see you completely lost for me. I’ll teach your body what it means to be loved by a pureblood.” Aaaaaand pretty sure the CG was alluding to him licking the good stuff from her basement, though not entirely sure given it was only the preview.
The brief POV they give us is also very revealing:
“You always keep your promises, and I think I underestimate all the time how much you saved me. You are good, only you are good in this world.”
“Will we continue to make promises to each other in the future? Well in that case--you will always, always be mine, my vampire.”
Tbh he’s...v sweet? In his own way? Honestly he feels like a crabapple that is just so sick of the world and wants softe wife to take comfort in. While granted that’s not really my thing, I know a fanbase appeal exists for these types--so if that’s your thing, have at it!
So now that we have reached the end of my ridiculously long analysis (when am I ever brief, I’m so sorry. If you made it all the way here you deserve a cookie at the very least, if not the right to chase me with a bat) perhaps it’s more clear why I said discount vampire Sasuke Uchiha? “My clan is gone, every other second I’m going to be in retraumatization insanity, when I’m not I’ll be seeking power/hobbies, planning the demise of people who wanted the best for me, building a team to my advantage and unquestioned control, and eventually settling for a lifelong love who sees the best in me despite my more difficult moments and perceived hollowing loneliness. Not the most ideal comparison, but I will say if Vlad was not already named the historical figure, would have pointed and yelled Uchiha.
That’s all from me folks, hopefully this was a fun way to get introduced to him? And again, hope I didn’t alienate--I fully respect what people do and don’t enjoy o7

Halloween Prank Gone Wrong | Luke Patterson
Request: hi! firstly i love your series & imagines! they are so wonderful! <3 okay secondly can i request a luke patterson x reader where reader is friends with julie and it’s Halloween so Julie decides to prank reader with an ouija board and has the boys behind everything but reader can see them? sorry if this doesn’t make sense ):
Pairing: Luke Patterson x reader, JATP x reader, Julie x Flynn x Reader
Warnings: Use of OUIJA board
Words: 2,239
Songs used: Time Warp - Glee Cast Version
Y/N: Your name Y/L/N: Your last name Y/M/N: Your mother’s name
You and Julie have been friends since you were both in diapers, along with Carrie. The three of you used to be inseparable, and then even Flynn joined your Squad in Middle School. People used to call you the Los Feliz Four. Then came the worst year of your squad’s year. Julie lost her mom and with it, her love and connection to music, one of the many things that connected the Los Feliz Four. Carrie stopped hanging out with Julie after a humongous fight, and when Flynn picks Julie’s side, you’re stuck between the two fires. You love Julie with all your heart and help her wherever she needs it, but you also still hang out every now and then with Carrie. Though the drama in Dirty Candy sometimes gets a little much.
On the day of the spirit assembly, you’re on the sidelines, cheering on Dirty Candy and Julie herself when she takes her spot behind the keyboard, starting a song you don’t know. Her voice echoes through the gym, capturing every student’s attention. Even more so when a band flashes onto the stage, joining her into the song. You have to blink a couple of times, to make sure you’re really seeing things correctly. These are three of four boys from Sunset Curve. Your mother used to be the biggest fan of their music back in the 90’s and showed you all of their work. She even told you about Bobby, who now goes by the name of Trevor Wilson and how he used to be part of the band as well. You never told Carrie what you knew. But seeing the boys up there, knowing they died, only means one thing. These are ghosts. The ghosts of a 90’s band. You can’t help but jam along with them, though the song is completely unfamiliar to you. And, once the song is over, you can still see the boys on the side of the stage, talking amongst each other whilst Julie explains the hologram-thing. You witness the dark-haired boy run up the steps and shake his booty, checking if no one can see them. You’re somewhere at the back of the crowd, hidden behind the tallest guy in your class. He can’t see you, but you can see him. You have to ask Julie what’s going on. There needs to be an explanation to this. You don’t know how to tell her you know. It might be weird to just go up there and tell her ‘hey! I know about your ghost band!’. Besides, how fun would it be to know about her secret and catch her in each lie she comes up with as an excuse for their behavior? You hold it out until October. Halloween, to be exact. It’s been hard, trying to keep this from Julie, but it has been fun seeing the boys squirm whenever you looked straight into their eyes as if you could see them. The hardest part was trying not to laugh whenever they said something dumb or funny, but you just about managed. You managed enough for Julie to believe you didn’t know about her ghost band and to come up with a scheme to prank you this Halloween. You didn’t know, at first, since she just asked to hang out on Halloween, watch some horror films and just enjoy the holiday you both loved so much, along with Flynn. The three of you had decided to dress up for your little get together. Dressed as Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls, you make your way to Julie’s garage. To no surprise, finding the boys there too, along with Flynn -- dressed as Buttercup -- and Julie -- dressed as Blossom. “Hey,” you greet as your eyes land on the Ouija Board, surrounded by dozens of candles. “Playing a game, are we?” You already have a hunch what’s going to happen, but decide to play along anyway. “Yes! No better moment than Halloween to break this bad boy out, right?” Flynn exclaims as she sits down on the floor at the coffee table where Julie had set up the board. “Sure,” you agree with a shrug before taking a red cup from Julie. She’d gone all out with decorating the studio with cobwebs and pumpkins and skeletons. She really went to town, even on the beverages and snacks. All of them Halloween-themed. “Are we ready?” Julie asks ominously whilst sitting down next to Flynn and extending her arms, so they’re resting on the plaque in the middle of the board. You bite your bottom lip, trying your hardest not to start laughing at your best friends, and sit down with them. The three boys surround you, placing their hands onto the plaque at the same time you and Flynn do. “It’s really important you keep your hands on the plaque at all times,” Julie warns you and Flynn. It’s really hard to concentrate on the board and not on the extremely cute guy on the opposite side of the table, staring at you with a grin on his face. “Let’s do this,” you state, your eyes flicking from Julie to Flynn, stopping briefly at the lead singer of Sunset Curve. You catch a flicker of confusion in his eyes, but decide to ignore it and focus on Julie and Flynn for now. “O Fortuna, Velut luna, Statu variabilis, Semper crescis, Aut decrescis; Vita detestabilis.” You furrow your eyebrows at Julie’s sudden outburst in Latin. You don’t need much to recognize it though. That’s from O Fortuna by Carmina Burana. The most famous choral number in existence. You feel a little offended Julie thinks you wouldn’t know that. “Are you ghosts out there?” she asks in a menacing voice, trying to build up the tension. You can feel the boy next to you go through you with his shoulder as he pushes against the plaque to slide it over to the ‘yes’. You press your lips together to keep you from laughter, your eyes widening in fake shock. “Who are you?” you ask as you look into the lead singer's eyes, pretending to look ahead into the abyss. The boy now leans forward and starts moving the plaque to the L, then U-K-E. You glance at Julie and Flynn, who exchange glances too. “Were you in a band?” Luke’s eyes widen at this, frantically glancing at his best friends in need of help. The blond one, who’s sitting next to Flynn, cocks his head to the stereo before getting up from his spot and moving to the corner. He presses the play button, a song you recognize as Now or Never by their very own band. You nod your head, impressed by the lengths these boys are going to keep up this prank. “Hey, Luke,” you’re still looking at him instead of Julie or Flynn. “Are your bandmates here too?” “Bro, she knows,” Luke scoffs, which makes you burst out laughing. You can’t handle it anymore. The disappointment in Luke’s face is just too much. “I’m sorry guys, but I can literally see you…” you tell the three guys, leaving them and your two best friends in complete and utter shock, laced with a bit of disgruntlement over their prank failing. “My mother used to be a really big fan of yours. She showed me all of your music and told me about Bobby-slash-Trevor.” Julie’s head snaps up at this. “You knew?” she asks, eyes wide and bewildered at this new information. “Yeah, I never told you or Carrie because one, I didn’t think it mattered, and two, there must be a reason why Bobby hasn’t told his own daughter about his past band.” You shrug, letting your eyes dart over to the boys again. They’re all sat on the floor, frozen in shock. “How do you see us?” the darker-haired boy with the rosy cheeks asks. “I guess my mother being such a fan of Sunset Curve gives me a connection to all of you?” you offer them your best guess. Luke’s eyes widen, clearly realizing something as he gets up from the floor to start pacing the garage. “What’s her name?” he asks, remembering one girl he had a real connection with. “Y/M/N.” He visibly swallows a lump in his throat, and scratches the back of his head awkwardly. “Yeah… Let’s say I know her very well…” Your mind immediately jumps to a conclusion that leaves you a little weirded out. “Remember that one girl our age at the book club we played at?” He directs this question to the boys. “Right! She was the daughter of the hostess!” the brunette, who you’re guessing is Reggie by the way he expresses himself, remembers. “No, you didn’t!” His eyes widen at the sudden realization, he then turns to you. “You’re her daughter?!” You nod your head slowly, trying to comprehend what’s happening. “It doesn’t matter who Luke had a special connection with,” Julie interrupts, “Why didn’t you say anything? It killed me not telling you!” You shrug your shoulders. “I guess I thought it would’ve been weird to just come up to you and say ‘yo, Jules, I can see your ghost band!’ Besides, it was fun seeing these boys squirm whenever I looked at them a little too long.” Your lip turns upwards on one side. “I knew you saw me!” The blonde guy narrows his eyes at you. So, that must be Drama Queen Alex… “Can we just drop it and enjoy the rest of our night together?” you exclaim, raising your hands in defense for ever lying to your best friends. “I heard…” you start, glancing at all three of the boys, “You guys are very good at jamming whatever song is thrown at you.” “Yes! Please! Sing! So I’m not the only one not seeing you!” Flynn groans in frustration, walking through Luke, not realizing he’d gotten up from his seat earlier. “I just stepped through someone, didn’t I?” Julie and you simply nod your head, amused smiles stifled. Luke and Reggie grab their instruments whilst Alex makes his way behind his drum kit. “Y’all know Time Warp, from the Rocky Horror Picture Show?” you ask. As an answer, Alex counts all of you in before the band starts playing and Luke’s voice fills the studio.  “It's astounding, time is fleeting Madness takes its toll But listen closely,” You, having received a microphone from Julie, walk over to the lead singer your mother had a fling with once -- apparently -- and chime into the song.   “Not for very much longer” “I've got to keep control” He shoots you a wink before changing to his head voice to go into the chorus. “I remember doing the time warp Drinking those moments when The blackness would hit me And the void would be calling” Then, all of you join into the post-chorus together, singing at the top of your lungs. “Let's do the time warp again Let's do the time warp again” Reggie then takes the next part whilst all three girls do the choreography from the musical, and alternating lines with Reggie. “It's just a jump to the left” “And then a step to the right” “put your hands on your hips” “You bring your knees in tight But it's the pelvic thrust That really drives you insane Let's do the time warp again! Let's do the time warp again!” You dance your way to Reggie whilst taking the next verse, all while Julie’s behind the keyboard, getting some melodic notes into the jam. “It's so dreamy, oh fantasy free me So you can't see me, no not at all In another dimension, with voyeuristic intentions Well-secluded, I see all” Reggie looks into your eyes as he uses his best seductive voice to sing the next line. “With a bit of a mind flip” And then you imitate that tone on your next line. “You're into the time slip” “And nothing can ever be the same” Flynn then takes the next line, dancing in front of Alex’s drum kit, facing him with a wide smile on her face. She’s glad she can see the boys now too. It makes her feel a little less left out. “You're spaced out on sensation” Alex then sings one line before the rest of you join in again for the chorus. “Like you're under sedation” “Let's do the time warp again! Let's do the time warp again!” “It's just a jump to the left” “And then a step to the right” “put your hands on your hips” “You bring your knees in tight But it's the pelvic thrust That really drives you insane Let's do the time warp again! Let's do the time warp again!” The boys play their last chords or hit their last cymbals while Julie plays her last note. All six of you giggling like crazy, oozing happiness and contentment. This is probably the craziest and most fun you’d ever had on Halloween. “Oh, man!” Flynn whines, a pout on her face. You don’t know why at first, but then remember she can’t see the boys like you and Julie can, which sends all of you into a fit of laughter. If your life is going to be this fun and crazy with these boys in your life, you’d never want to die. Or maybe you would, if that meant spending even more time with them.

everything update / the next few weeks.
hey everyone!!! i just wanted to update you on what’ll be happening over the next few weeks in case im not as active as i usually am!
i’ll be going to the opposite coast of the US for thanksgiving, so there’ll be a time change that’ll take me a minute to get used to. im going to keep regular EST in mind on the next two saturdays so i can post PTC at its usual time. i usually have it queued but sometimes tumblr doesn’t cooperate with me 👹 so if im a few hours late, that’s why!
the 27th is my birthday! im thinking of having another celebration or maybe taking a few days to post some new one shots since i haven’t done that in a long time. at the very least, there’ll be a new chapter of PTC out that day. i have some good ideas in my notes that i just need to actually take the time to write lol (btw my list is still on amazon and my ko-fi is linked in all of my work 👀)
the name thing- i’ve gotten a few messages about that. if you didn’t catch it when i said it earlier, i’ve been going by my middle name on here. i’ve always gone by it so it’s not like it’s an alias or anything. i always used to hate my first name but lately i’ve been trying to switch it up, i’ve grown to like it more as i’ve gotten older. i’ve always gone by both my first and middle names interchangeably, so whatever you all feel comfortable calling me on here i am also comfortable with! nina, christine, christie, chris, nc, c, n! i’ll usually sign everything “n.c.” but im okay with anything.
also, finals season is approaching for me. these finals are pretty important bc they’re the last finals i’ll be taking in my college career. if im not interacting as much, that is why! i love interacting and being on here, but i also love good grades jshdksh. everything should be done at the beginning of december, and that’s when im opening my requests back up!
a few months ago i updated you all about an awful family situation i was in, if anyone is still concerned, my brother is doing fine and is back in school! he went as a horror movie character for halloween (sam from trick r treat? i’ve never seen it but he looked cute as heck in it bc he’s so little) and as far as i know, is doing much better. thank you for all your kind words during a really rocky period of my life. i can only hope that he continues to stay better.
ik ive said it already today, but i genuinely am so happy you’re all loving my new series! i can’t wait for you to read future chapters and other new works that’ll come eventually 💞 thanks for all the love on this blog, im so excited for what the future holds!!

Twelve Dreams of Dr Sardonicus by Spirit
My parents were desperate for me to like classical music, but I just couldn’t buy into the length of the pieces. Then they played me Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber and it was so beautiful, I cried. My school music teacher, Mr Vassal, asked for our favourite composers; I said Samuel Barber and he laughed at me. But eventually everyone caught up.
There was a Beatles versus Stones vibe at school. I was on the Beatles side. The first single I bought was Wild Thing by the Troggs and the first album was Bookends by Simon and Garfunkel. I loved Father and Son by Cat Stevens, because it made me think of me and my dad. My tastes weren’t shocking; they just needed to open up. Then, when I was 17, I went to hospital to have my tonsils out and my brother bought me some records and this mobile turntable in a suitcase.
Twelve Dreams of Dr Sardonicus by Spirit had the most amazing way of manipulating stereo. I was just blown away. I have to thank my brother; he turned me on to Joni Mitchell, Andy Pratt and Little Feat and opened up my boundaries.
Little Brother, Little Sister
My mother, Helen Shingler, was famous during my teens for playing Madame Maigret in a BBC series based on the Georges Simenon stories. My father, Seafield Head, was a producer and director at Verity Films, the documentary film company. Every year, a family friend’s mum would hire this huge barn and put on a play. I had a bit part in The Jackdaw of Rheims. The next year, I got to be the Emperor in The Emperor’s New Clothes. As I walked through the audience, all heads turned towards me and I remember thinking: “This is what I want to do for a living.”
I applied to the National Youth Theatre and the Central School of Speech and Drama, but I didn’t get in, so my father hired me as a runner and assistant editor. Working in the cutting rooms was fascinating. Then I enrolled at The Young Stagers at the Thorndike theatre in Leatherhead, run by this lovely woman called Joan MacAlpine. She directed me in an extraordinary piece called Little Brother, Little Sister, which got me into the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. My teacher said: “If anybody can make me cry, I’ll take them to the theatre.” I did my piece again and made her cry.
The Rocky Horror Show
I remember being taken to The Rocky Horror Show on Kings Road when I was at drama school in my late teens. Tim Curry was playing Dr Frank-N-Furter – the role that he repeated in the film. Watching The Rocky Horror Show ignited something in my core. I knew I had acting in my blood because of my mother. Now I couldn’t wait to finish drama school and try to make it in the real world.
I finally got to play Dr Frank-N-Furter when The Rocky Horror Show came to the Piccadilly theatre in 1990. The exciting thing about acting is that you shouldn’t know what’s coming out of the actor’s mouth next – and I didn’t hold back. I just let whatever was going on inside of me come out in the character. That was life-changing for me as an actor. It made me realise that there’s nowhere that you can’t go.
Friends would come to see me perform and later say that they hardly recognised me, I was so out of character. As an actor, that’s a huge compliment.
Judi Dench

One of Judi Dench’s early roles was this show on BBC Two called Talking to a Stranger, with Michael Bryant, Maurice Denham and Margery Mason. It’s about this family who are at odds with each other. Each of the four parts focuses on one family member’s view of what is going on around them. I thought it was beautiful, amazing and absolutely genius and I just fell in love with Judi. I thought that she was the most amazing actress – and still do. Judi taught me that acting can be at its best when it is very subtly underplayed. The core of believing an actor is buying into the fact that they’re not acting.
I got to play the rather unpleasant suitor of one of her on-screen daughters in Love in a Cold Climate on the BBC in the early 00s. I’m sure I must have said to Judi: ‘I think you’re so wonderful.’ Actors need appreciation and recognition. I suppose for me that will always be for Buffy, because Buffy was so different and so pivotal for its time. The episode called The Body, where Buffy’s mum dies, is the most extraordinary piece of writing and misdirection. I’m very grateful to have done so many evocative things that so many people have latched on to.
Paul Newman

I love Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Each act is so brilliantly put together; it’s a stunning piece of writing. Both Robert Redford and Paul Newman are phenomenal, but Newman especially I’ve always loved, because he’s so believable that he instantly transports you into the story. I also loved Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West, in which he plays the baddie, which is unusual.
I often get cast as baddies. I don’t know why. I play Rupert Mannion on [the Apple TV+ sitcom] Ted Lasso. He’s a particularly unpleasant character and a complete narcissist, but you know where he’s coming from. To make somebody believable, you have to see their point of view. You don’t need to like them, but you have to be on board with what’s driving them.
I’m also in an episode of the new series of Back with David Mitchell and Robert Webb. I get to play a totally self-absorbed character called Charismatic Mike, who was great fun to play. It’s always been my theory that actors are hugely insecure, which is why we love dressing up and being someone else, because we don’t have to be in our own heads and bodies. Then we can express things that we may feel deep down and blame it on the character.
Lord of the Flies
At drama school, I really liked the people on the stage-managing course who were studying things like costume, lighting and prop-making. People used to say: you have to behave like a star to be thought of as a star. So, traditionally, a lot of actors take stage managers for granted.
I get very cross with actors who just throw their clothes on the floor. I said to one actor recently: “Costume are here before you, setting up your clothes, and they’re here after you’ve gone. Pick up your clothes, put them on a hanger in your cupboard. It’s not a big deal.” Teamwork is important.
At school, one of the books that blew me away was Lord of the Flies. It’s also about teamwork and not necessarily someone standing in front becoming the leader. In your teens, the world is yours to do what you want with. As you grow up, you realise you’re just part of something much bigger. Now more than ever, life should be about teamwork and for the cause of the greater good.
School’s Out Forever is available on digital from 15 February and DVD and Blu-ray from 12 April

Dear AQ;
Another reader shout-out from me; this time with screenshots! I’m presenting the following comments from @tumble4rpdr without much further comment except to say that as a writer, the highest praise I had never even considered could be a thing before reading her comments- was that someone would respond to your story, with a story of their own. Her comments are a masterclass in the art of commenting- and I’m not joking about that in the slightest; because they read like stories of their own, that take details from your story, and weave them in and out of directions that I, as the writer, had never even thought of, and she has a gift of matching the exact cadence of a story to the line-by-line commentary that leaves me seeing my work in a completely different light.
We’re all used to following our favorite authors, but when I started reading in this fandom, I knew of this particular reader and was thrilled to find her on tumblr because she’d left these awesome comments on every chapter of a series that I was reading at the time, and I loved seeing the comments, almost as much as I loved seeing the story/series update- because they felt like two experiences that built on each other, and was so surprised when they commented on my own work in the same way. Even though I wrote the thing; it still felt like this amazing parallel experience which was not only incredibly motivating, but something I looked forward to with everything I published after that. Here are some of those first comments (not the very first ever, but far enough back for everyone to get the idea!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s no surprise that comments like these, are the kind that authors (well, just speaking for myself here!) go back to time and time again, because they remind us why we write these stories. Not only is it fun to “make the Barbie dolls make out”, but because writing stories, and making things, help us connect with our people and build spaces where we can celebrate the kind of stuff that makes us happy- no matter how unusual or “cringe” it might be. For me, knowing as a writer that the little tidbits and in-jokes and worlds I build in my mind don’t go unnoticed and give someone else the same joy in reading it; is pretty much like having a million dollars put right into my bank account (or at least, it sure feels that way!)
Here are some more recent examples of this incredible reader’s work:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And; since these shoutouts are supposed to be about spotlighting what every kind of reader can take with them into their own reading and commenting habits; for me it’s the dedication:
Tumblr media
This story ended up remaining unfinished, but again, I can’t overstate how incredible, fulfilling and important it is to see readers and to hear from readers like this for myself as a writer, and again, in the whole community. I love to see the same people comment on my work and am sure I’m not alone in that. It’s even more extraordinary to me, when I see those comments come in from someone whose work I respect and can’t get enough of- these comments are absolutely golden and you’re the Bruce Lee to me in White Belt Community Center Karate- and are an example of how I want to be in the community and as a writer: encouraging, engaged, creative and passionate.
Unsurprisingly, she’s also a writer and in the interest of being promotional, I REALLY encourage everyone here to check out her writing, as well! It’s under the same username on AO3 and will show up in a search over there. Like the comments above; her stories are some of the most unique and well-thought out AUs in the Branjie fandom, particularly in the M/M niche, and incorporate a lot of elements that are rare in non-sci-fi/fantasy fandom fanfics as well- like a full Rocky Horror AU; body swaps, magical realism, and more and ground them all in the “realities” of developing the characters as people, who despite the situation they find themselves in, really want to connect and fall in love and talk to each other! Please, if absolutely nothing else, check out her work, and leave those COMMENTS!

AO3 Tag Game
Thanks for the tag @captainjimothycarter
This was a wild fucking ride, and I invite ANY and all of you to hop in my ask to discuss any and or all of this. because I’ve been writing fic since the 90′s...
1. How many works do you have on ao3? 223
2. What’s your current AO3 wordcount? 1,016,444 (Holy shit I had NO IDEA)
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they? 10 Main fandoms (Captain America/MCU/Agent Carter, Once Upon a Time, CSI, Big Bang Theory, X-Men, Doctor Who, X-Files, House, Nolan-verse Batman, Stargate Sg1/Universe) with crossovers that included 9 other fandoms (Operation Endgame, Ravenous, Indiana Jones, Monster’s Inc, 10th Kingdom, The Santa Clause, Outlander, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Return to Oz)
I also have some questionable Lois and Clark the new adventures of Superman and MacGyver fic I’ve never published.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
The Silly Stocking Supposition (995)
The Attractive Enchantress Extension (656)
The Unexpected Evening Encounter (518)
The Descending Spiral Derivation (430)
Nobody’s Baby (406)
I don’t know why it surprises me that the top four are BBT Sheldon/Penny. The Shenny community I was a part of was AMAZING and to this day I don’t think a SINGLE day goes by where I don’t get notifications about kudos on my S/P fics.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not. I didn’t in the beginning- I came from ff.net where that wasn’t something you really did unless you DM’d the person, and I felt like it was “inflating” the number of comments. BUT i have since learned how important it is to thank people for their comments, and how much fun it can be to talk to people there, so now I reply to EVERY comment, even if it takes me a while to get there. Because I appreciate you. I really, really do.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? I mean... In most of my other fandoms I was the QUEEN of angst. Especially X-Men. Like- there’s a story where Rogue commits suicide. And the one where Logan watches his children grow old and die because he can’t die. I’ve done a few for Steggy- Steve talking to Peggy’s AI, Steve replacing Peggy’s picture in his compass, Old Steve living through the snap again... My House fics are are pretty angsty... and some of my S/P ones, too. Like- there’s a lot of angst. Probably more than happy endings.
7. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve ever written? Ha. ha ha. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
I mean, let’s start with the ones that make sense, shall we? Cap/Indiana jones. Totally makes sense. As does Doctor Who/Avengers, because Doctor Who can be anywhere, right?? And Outlander/Captain America sort of makes sense because of the time period and them both being in the same war.
There’s my still unpublished (shh, i know, I know) Stargate SG-1/MCU crossover... As soon as I manage a plot that’s getting posted because I LOVE IT.
Once you get to the Rocky Horror/Captain America TFA, that’s when things start to take a turn.
And then there’s the “Anyelle” from the OUAT fandom.... where we shipped all of Bobby’s character’s with all of Emilie’s characters and THAT IS HOW YOU GET CANNIBAL PORN CHILDREN.
But... but Once Upon a Time really did me in. I crossed that shit over with The Santa Clause, Monster’s Inc, The 10th Kingdom, Stargate Universe, and Return to Oz.
Seriously? If it makes even the TINIEST bit of sense, I will fucking write it.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic? Yeah, but nothing horrific. Just your run of the mill stupidity.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? YES. Most of the time it’s pretty straightforward M/F. Sometimes it’s Cannibal. Sometimes it gets a little kinky.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen? YES. And it sucks. don’t do this.
11. Have you ever co-written a fic before? YES. Twice. I did an X-Files series with a friend who I’ve lost track of about Mulder and Scully getting drunk off their asses and hooking up, and then I did a forever-unfinished self-insert fic in the CSI universe. Neither of these are on my AO3 because I don’t have/never got permission to post.
12. What’s your all time favorite ship? ALL OF THEM. God... I don’t pick ships because they’re cute- I pick them because the CALL to me on a basic level. Mulder and Scully were my first love, Steggy is my latest, but these pairs- UGH. They all kill me and I will happily die with them over and over again.
13. What was the first fandom you wrote for? The first fandom I wrote anything on paper for was actually X-Files. I started writing stories before I knew fic was a thing on the internet. But I’d been writing episodes of Quantum Leap in my head long before I ever wrote that first (awful and will never see the light of day) X-Files fic.
14. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? How can I answer that? Like, LITERALLY HOW CAN I ANSWER THAT? I love them all, and I am so proud of so many of them for so many different reasons!! Don’t ask me to choose amongst my babies. I can’t.
Ugh, this was crazy and so much fun.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT MY FIC I WILL TELL YOU ALL THE THINGS!

June 18, 2021: Young Hard and Handsome by Walt Disco
*Bandcamp here
Per i-D:
“Our music has got theatre and glamour to it; it’s never really understated. The best review we ever got was someone saying: Walt Disco should rewrite The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
Because it’s Pride Month:
Here’s some queer history from around the world, not just the United States.
Here are some LGBTQIA+ GoFundMe campaigns: Rent Fund For Black LGBT Family, Help Roze get somewhere safe (Non-Binary LGBTQ), Survival and Gender Affirming Needs for Black Enby, College Fund for a Black Trans Woman, Tito’s top surgery and recovery fund, Omi’s Transition Fund: Health, Housing, & Security, Help Emmett Pay for Emergency Surgery
If you’d like to get involved with stopping the atrocities against Palestine, here’s where you can start (text in bold for readability):
DONATIONS: This Carrd is full of information, petitions, and places to donate, these are some additional organizations to which you can donate and a list of corporations to boycott, and this post has some information about the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund and a list of other organizations.
PETITIONS AND ACTIONS: This is a petition for the UK government to formally recognize the State of Palestine, this is a petition for them to introduce sanctions against Israel, and this is a petition for them to condemn Israel for their treatment of Palestine and Palestinians. This is a list of actions you can take (somewhat UK-specific) and a reading list of texts.
HISTORY AND BACKGROUND INFORMATION: This is one Jewish person’s explanation of the conflation of Jewish identity with the modern Israeli state. They mention the Nakba – read about it here. This 2016 Vox video and this 2015 CrashCourse video both give an overview of the conflict from its inception until the mid-2010s, this video explains the history of the Israeli settlements in Palestine, and here are some podcast episodes about Palestine. Decolonize Palestine has an FAQ about Palestine here and this post has some resources with background information and updates about the current situation.
PRESENT DAY: This is the Wikipedia overview of the current iteration of the crisis, this is a report about U.S. foreign aid to Israel, and these are the Wikipedia pages for Palestine-United States relations and Israel-United States relations. Here are some perspectives from on the ground in Gaza; this also explains why spreading the Palestinian point of view is so important. Vice News has a series of videos entitled “The Israeli-Palestine Conflict”. I particularly recommend “Life Inside Gaza After Nearly 2 Weeks of Bombings” (June 4, 2021), “Israel Is Vaccinating ‘Everyone’ – Besides 5 Million Palestinians” (January 28, 2021), and “Why Evangelical Christians Love Israel” (May 15, 2018). The latter provides some insight into why Israel is such a big talking point for the religious right. This Vox video from October 6, 2016, discusses one way that Palestinians are being pushed out of East Jerusalem: gentrification.
Black lives matter and here are some ways you can get involved in the  fight against racism, specifically anti-black racism (text in bold for readability):
This Linktree and this Carrd are full of ways to confront and fight against anti-black racism: places to donate, advice for protesting, educational resources.
Donate to: Families Supporting Families Against Police Violence, the Racial Justice Network, Communities United Against Police Brutality, the Bail Project, the Black Trans Advocacy Coalition, the NAACP, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the Okra Project, the Solutions Not Punishment Collaborative, For The Gworls, G.L.I.T.S., the Marsha P. Johnson Institute, the Black Trans Travel Fund, the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, and the Black Trans Femmes in the Arts Collective.
GoFundMe: Justice for Breonna Taylor, In Memory of Jamarion Robinson, Rent Fund For Black LGBT Family, Esperanza Spalding’s BIPOC Artist Sanctuary, Survival and Gender Affirming Needs for Black Enby, Jaya and Dylan’s Move out Fund, Janet and David’s apartment burned down, Help Revay get to medical school, Help Dai Parker Get Back into College Fund, Help Send Howard to Berklee College of Music, A Home for Harriett’s Bookshop

Pride Spotlight: DEERE
Hey Tumblr, this Pride Spotlight is no fluke—she’s serving you lewks, kooks, & spooks! DEERE is a partnered Twitch broadcaster with a focus on drag content and scary video games. As a proud TwitchCon Ambassador—someone from the community selected for showcasing positivity and diversity—DEERE founded the Stream Queens team. Ready to learn more about this lady-gamer extraordinaire? Read on.
How do you bridge gaming and queer interests in your streams?
As a kid, gaming was an escape for me. Naturally, I would go for the super powerful, badass women in fighting games. My parents are huge fans of drag and queer culture like Divine and Rocky Horror, so I started to be super inspired by the attitudes, fashions, and storylines of queer characters and strong women. I’m very lucky because not everyone has an upbringing like that, and I am forever grateful and indebted to my parents for instilling values of acceptance in my upbringing. I was encouraged to express myself authentically from a young age, so I thought, hey, why not play video games in drag—effectively intertwining my two favorite passions! Bam!
What does Pride mean to you?
First and foremost, Pride means unapologetically being yourself and being happy with yourself. When you are happy and kind, others feel it, and it can rub off on them too. It’s also about showing appreciation and giving back. I’m lucky to have supportive family, friends, and fans because I know there are people out there who have it much harder. That’s why Pride is also about supporting your community. This year Twitch is partnering with The Trevor Project, a non-profit organization aiming to provide crisis intervention and suicide prevention services for young members of the LGBTQ+ community. I am supporting this cause in my streams for the whole of June.
How can we continue to support the LGBTQIA+ community?
We can all make this world a better place to live in by showing kindness and understanding. When it comes to the queer community, representation and visibility are key. Pride is about equality, something the LGBTQ+ community hasn't quite reached yet. So, when given the chance, we need to prop each other up so we can say, “we are HERE!” It's important to showcase the fact that many different types of people enjoy fun activities, such as gaming—especially if the avenue is dominated by a certain ethnicity, gender, orientation, or class.  That way everyone has a role model and can be inspired to pursue their passions. I’m hoping that through my drag and video game interests, I’m showing lots of people that you can play games and be authentic about your identity at the same time!
Is there a gaming-inspired drag cosplay you always wanted to do but haven’t yet?
I have cosplayed as the Pokémon Jynx, the Great Fairy from Zelda, and Poison from Street Fighter so far. I would love to do more Pokémon, Birdo from the Mario series, and Jeanne from Bayonetta 2!
How can others follow you?
Do you like video games? Do you like drag? Never fear, DEERE is here! You can check out my livestreams, and while you’re at it check out my Stream Queens family—a whole network of drag content creators on Twitch! Or check out my Twitter and Instagram. Thank you so much for having me!
Thank you for the interview, DEERE! Want to check out some more amazing LGBTQIA+ gaming content creators? Check out our other Pride Spotlights here!

Name 7 of your comfort films and tag 7 people.
I was tagged by the lovely @bunn1cula! I have quite a few comfort films, but these were the first to come to mind.
Rocky III (1982)
Tumblr media
I would consider all of the Rocky films to be comfort films for me, but the third will always be my favourite. It was the first film in the Rocky series I ever saw and it has only hit me harder as time has gone on. The struggle of being hit by harsh reality when you are completely unprepared is displayed with such honesty and sincerity, that it still resonates with me though I am neither a man, nor a sportsman.
Scum (1979)
Tumblr media
Not what one would imagine a comfort film to look like, but I have loved this film for a very, very long time. It is about as bleak and brutal as any youth story can get, and I think is difficult for me to articulate what is comforting about it. It is brilliantly acted, coldly realistic, highly quotable and very English. I first saw it as a young teen (the original TV film version) and it made a huge impression on me.
License To Drive (1988)
Tumblr media
This one is comforting for a very specific reason; I always watch it when I have a driving test coming up. Though it has not helped me pass, yet, it does give me immense joy and helps me feel better about being on the road. This is a fun, chaotic coming of age film to it’s core, and it does not try to be anything else. It has a wonderful innocence to it as well, lacking the usual level of sleaze you expect from a teen film made in the 80s. Besides “The Lost Boys” I think this is the best and most fitting film that the Two Coreys starred in, together and definitely one of Corey Haim’s most lovable and relatable roles.
Chopper (2000)
Tumblr media
Another film that one would not usually describe as comforting. This is just a film that I enjoy every single time I watch it, and I have watched it many times. My parents and I have been quoting it for years. I find a lot of modern organised crime films to be annoying, or pretentious, but I have never gotten that from “Chopper”. It’s pace, cinematography and soundtrack have an oddly soothing quality, but the script is hilarious and the acting is so gripping.
Phantasm (1979)
Tumblr media
It took me a couple of watches to fully appreciate this film, but I’m so glad that I went back to it. It is now one of my favourite horrors and the series is one of my favourites. The whole film has a hypnotic, dreamy quality, like a dream we’ve all had before. The enclosed feeling of the setting sort of cradles you as you watch. The three main heroes are some of the most likeable I have seen in any horror film, which really lets you really feel like you are experiencing everything with them.
From Beyond The Grave (1974)
Tumblr media
This is one of the first horror films I can remember watching and it remains one of the best. Though it begins to drag a little near the end, all of the stories it presents are timeless, giving a perfect balance of heartbreaking horror and levity. Most veterans of the genre have likely already seen it, but I would recommend it to anyone. It is a film I feel everyone should see once. I just feel so cosy and nostalgic when I watch it.
The Lost Boys (1987)
Tumblr media
You all probably saw this one coming. I feel I’ve rabbited on about this film enough, but I still want to explain why it is comforting. I love multiple horror films that do not scare me, but I am still usually there for the horror elements. In the case of this film, however, while the horror is of the utmost importance, to me it merely pushes forward other elements which I enjoy more. I really love the portrayals of familial/brotherly relationships and youth in this film. It really makes me feel joyful, confident and younger. It is brimming with tenderness, but it is also full of relatability and levity. It is also one of the most aesthetically pleasing horrors, or films I need general that I have seen. There is just a touch of perfection about this film to me and it makes me so happy.
Any of my followers who want to do this, consider yourselves tagged!
