Antis are now using the "it's pretty obvious" clip to support their own claim that the next book will he Azriel's, saying that she's made it plenty obvious with all the attention given to him lately and I'm not even gonna argue because... yeah? I mean I don't believe he'll get a book but the way after two sisters it's suddenly the third bat boy getting povs after povs for no fucking reason other than Janet having a boner for him I'm not even surprised some people are actually believing this. Even if the elain antis are being disingenuous in their argument and pushing Azriel to be the next prominent character, their claims aren't coming out nowhere. Miss Janet has given elain antis plenty of reason to think that and be delusional.

I just know when the next book comes out no matter what the ship is, the fandom will IMPLODE. I can already see people review bombing the book even if it's actually decent and giving it one star out of spite if their ship isn't canon. Can't say I'll feel sorry when that happens. She created this mess and let it fester and rot the fandom. Pushing Azriel while ignoring the third sister since acowar, erasing feyre completely and unnecessarily drawing out the Nesta vs IC rivalry that nobody asked for. I know they are, but like, WHAT in ACOSF indicated that he'd be next? She said 'i thought it was obvious' just a month or so after the book was published. If you are a normal reader, what would tell you, of all things, that Azriel is next? Yeah, he hung out with Nesta, but 'next book' material? A little rich.

Also, i know they dont want to acknowledge it, but maybe we needed more info about Azriel upfront, in order to tie him with Elain? We know little about her, but perhaps the stuff about him is needed to dive into her story. Because you know...it's HER Book. Not his. He clearly needs help from a Starborn, even to activate his special knife. It's not going to be Gwyn activating his Made weapon and going to the Human Lands or to Koschei.

Gwyn is a Valkyrie. Azriel isn't. His job is over, Mor is taking over for him. He has his own story to tell and live, along with Elain.

Hi, my mind has been wondering about how deltarune fandom mischaracterise spamton and make him completly another character for some reason

like i seen some people make his og form very tall, or completly get rid of his voice glitch (Which could be caused by not knowing how to write his glitch which is totally understandble tho), which are very small things to change but personally i think that still changing so obvious things about him is quite... Not in place, because there are just some aspects of characters that MAKE them their own characters, and taking it out of them is either "yeah i dont like that im going to change him So hes exacly to my likings now" or just making completly diffrent character

This also implies about how fanbase either treats him as

1. only joke character, that never intended to be anything else by that, which is very weird cause spamton plays quite important role in dr's lore

2. Too sad/scary character, spamton is totally intended to be goofy weirdo making every Player laugh, skipping it just to him being sad and obsessed about neo is Just not it!

3. Child some sort, where he cannot do a single thing himself and needs help, which is incredibly ableist, but i think this topic has been totally talked about already

Sorry for ramble/rant, but its quite common thing i noticed about deltarune fanbase and spamton, and wanted to know others opinion about it

Thank you for this ask! It’s a great one, and gives me a lot of room to talk, so it goes under a readmore. You do not need to apologize for your ask, feel free to ramble away anytime! I greatly appreciate it!

As usual I want to put in a disclaimer that ultimately, the only person that 100% knows Spamton is his creator, Toby Fox himself. All we as fans can do is interpret and speculate based on what evidence is given in the game, and as is fandom tradition, we can put in headcanons, alternate universes, and more to flesh out his character. All of this is perfectly fine and normal for fandom, however there comes a drawback in fandom, especially when we are met with a “tragic villain” type: woobification. The TVTropes link provided explains it well.

Let’s address your ask itself:

Making Spamton in his original form tall (in this case over 6′0″/182.88 cm, the average height for an adult cisgender man) appears to be a purely aesthetic, stylistic choice and is harmless. I do prefer him short (specifically 4′8″/142.24 cm), but there’s nothing problematic or offensive about changing his height. If you don’t like that, it can be safely ignored.

The voice glitch is another one...I think there’s nothing wrong with substituting the in-game text style for an easier-to-read format to make it accessible for screen readers and visually impaired people. As long as you can tell it’s Spamton, it’s fine. Here’s an example from my fic:

Original: “WH4T?” He set the spoon down, “S0METHING 0N MY [Hair Dryer]?” 

You can see how that would be difficult for some people to read. If I so desired, I would probably change it this way:

Revised: “What?” He set the spoon down, voice warbling in-between glitches. “Something on my--” He stammered, ad-speech taking over his voice yet again, “H-hair dryer?”

It makes the sentence a little longer since I have to translate this text in a descriptive way so the reader understands which part is the bracketed one. Again, nothing wrong with substituting the text in a way that stays faithful to Spamton’s character.

It would only be an issue if the author actively chose not to use the bracketed text because they dislike it greatly, or they want to “cure” his speech impediment. The latter stems from a rather ableist trope of curing a disabled character’s disability and therefore erasing that representation.

As for being unsure how to write his voice, there are some posts on Tumblr, and there is his Wiki page that you can look through for reference. While you might never get it 100% perfect and neither will I, looking through these references can help a lot.

As you said, these are minor examples compared to some others, but they are just as valid as the more major issues with the fandomization of his character!

Now, on to your list:

Points 1 and 2 work well together, and could easily be combined. People need to understand while he is not purely a joke character (example, The Original Starwalker is a pure joke character. Sorry, fans, but he is), he is also not purely a tragic and scary character that the player must fear. He is meant to be funny, but he is also involved in a big part of the plot even as a “secret boss”. Some of the greatest villains in fiction are, indeed, those who manage to be both hilarious and terrifying.

(Yes, he is, per traditional definition, a villain. noun: villain; plural noun: villains 1. (in a film, novel, or play) a character whose evil actions or motives are important to the plot.)

People should not forget that a large chunk of his character is based around internet meme culture; KEYGEN is the most obvious (for those who do not know, it is a reference to a YouTube Poop, and it involves rapidly flashing lights which were much toned down on Spamton’s sprite), and Weirdmageddon has made the connection to internet personality Dril, whose tweets seem eerily similar to how Spamton speaks. Pipis is essentially kid-friendly Viagra.

However, in point 2 there’s a slight mistake, his obsession with NEO is crucial to his character arc and the overall story. While flanderization can happen, you can’t “skip” to him being simply obsessed with NEO, it’s a core of his character and cannot be avoided. It would actually be problematic if you ignored this point of his character (Exceptions being alternate universes and post-recovery situations).

As is true for many of Toby Fox’s other characters, he is multifaceted. He has nuance, and reducing him to one or two traits does Toby’s work a disservice. It is definitely difficult to balance out his character the way Toby manages to do, but it’s not impossible.

 The best way to figure it out is to do research using canon material (fanon is extremely unreliable, even the best fanfiction, and my own humble one, gets a few things wrong), and practice some writing using his character, put him in specific situations and see how he would react according to canon characterization.

The infantilization point has been the most oft-discussed issue with how the fandom treats him, correct, and I’m always happy to discuss it. Not only is it ableist in treating him like a child who is unable to take care of himself (when he displays many symptoms of severe mental illness), it also ignores many other facets about his character, which is so explicitly adult (In the sense that this is a man who was at his peak in 1997 and speaks/behaves distinctly like an older man with severe mental illness, not at all like a child, or even young.)

 However, there is a distinction to be made between this ableist infantilization of his character being helpless, and the very real possibility of being unable to take care of yourself due to mental illness. The latter is something that happens in real life, and people whose Activities of Daily Living are impaired deserve just as much respect and understanding as any other person.

Going by my experience in the fandom. I come to the understanding that some people do not address this disability/impaired ADL aspect and rather focus on making him act like a child and force him in situations that would only be appropriate for small children (See, the personally infamous rubber ducky scene from a fanfiction I will not name).

People who are mentally ill may act irrational in the perspective of non-mentally ill people, and from there comes the harmful stigma that they are equivalent to, or must be treated like, children or wild animals. Great care must be taken to avoid these stereotypes which I already see used so often on Spamton.

This does not include symbolic animal traits such as birds; the bird motif is symbolic of his want of freedom, for example. But while I can make an example for the animal side, I cannot make any example for the child side. There is absolutely nothing to his character that implies a childlike persona, not even his short height.

Spamton can be alluded to being like a bird without being treated like an animal, but in my opinion there is no excuse for infantilizing him.

While you apologized for your “ramble”, I started my own! This may be the longest I have written an answer, and I’m willing to discuss with other people over this, whether agreements, disagreements or additions. Let me know if there is anything you’re still confused on.

ok here's the thing. (lil fandom rant that doesnt matter, you dont have to read this, just yelling into the void)

i'm so easily swayed when it comes to like fandom opinions, i almost never get pressed about things that actually matter.

like when i first watched ep one of season 4, i thought eddie and chrissy were cute, i lowkey shipped them, joe and grace had good chemistry and the trope was fun albeit well-worn territory, and then she died and i was like 'oh well, in another life ig', and then i saw the chemistry the joes had and i was like 'oh yeah that's fun' and that's kinda carried on more just bc of the conversation around steddie

like both are good. i'm not overly enthusiastic about either ship but the way some people act in regards to the actual actors make it an obvious choice about where my loyalties lie

and like, i dont hold hatred for anybody. unless someone is horrible to me or someone i care about, there's no reason for me to be negative to someone, i'm very chill about this

and that brings up another point. in terms of fandoms and tumblr (and tiktok too, lets not kid ourselves) cringe is a made up concept.

if people are happy, not hurting anyone and not going against people's wishes (bc some actors/people in the public eye don't want to be involved in fandom stuff which is understandable) there's no need to talk shit about how people choose to love a show or book or game or whatever it is.

cosplayers are fucking cool, they spend hours and hours painstakingly recreating costumes that a department probably took at least weeks to perfect.

fic writers are cool, they create new material sourced from the thing they love, purely out of passion, often asking for nothing or very little in return. some of the best literature i've read has been fanfiction, and that's not a lie. not to mention writing is a great way to keep the brain active, at least in my experience as someone who spends a lot of time in hospital and home alone sick, reading and writing fic has actively made me feel like a functioning person again.

gif makers are fantastic, you guys must go through so much and honestly are so underrated in fandom spaces for the work you do, seriously. gifs are the essentials these days and you guys just do what's expected of you with nothing in return.

artists, fantastic work. you guys bring the characters even more to life, and i love seeing different interpretations of the people we love

songwriters (this one is apparently controversial) you do amazing work too! sing writing is hard and its amazing to see yall take inspiration wherever you can! keep it up!

and if you're just someone involved, you're amazing too. as long as you're being friendly and positive, you make this community a place worth being in. and that's what's important

fandoms have been like this for decades, even pre-internet. and i hate that this new perception of being enthusiastic about something you love is being seen as cringe, its crap and i wish we could all just happily coexist.

Why s5 *might* be the season MacRiley happens

Okay so...Hear me out! I'm not crazy I promise!!

Firstly, after 5x03 (and probably 5x04) it may seem very unlikely that MacRiley could ever happen. But I thought of a few reasons why they might actually happen by the end of s5 after all.... (it gets a lil long winded and kinda complicated but just stick with me till the end!)

1. All the MacRiley moments including the ones in 5x03.

Every Macriley moment we have ever had- whether it's the hugs, Riley saving Mac, Mac saving Riley, the ultimate show of loyalty when Riley went after Mac during Codex or even just the looks exchanged between the two- to any outsider it would seem pretty obvious that they are dating or at least in love. Keep in mind the writers would have written each of those scenes and Lucas and Tristan have acted them out with a specific build up in mind aka MacRiley.(think about the date episode: Riley just got dumped but was still thinking about how Mac might be hungry. She didnt have to do that. She could have just shown up at his place..) I mean how can they write two people so perfectly in sync and so perfect for each other and not have them end up together? It would just be a waste of all that tension and slow burn. (not to mention all the hugs and glances)

2. They know we exist. 

The MacRiley fam is very active on twitter with the writers and while they were writing 5x01 they knew we were around. They know we are a huge group. They would not want to risk pissing 90% of the fandom off by not making MacRiley endgame.

[P.S.yes 5x03 was a bait and switch but if you were paying attention you would have noticed that neither Lucas not Tristan live tweeted or hyped up the episode. They knew we would probably hate it so they didnt publicise it too much! so in the future if you have doubts about the episode being a MacRiley one just check their stories or posts on twitter/intstagram]

3. Yes 5x03 happened. 

I really think it was an episode they HAD to write. Ok so after 4x13 they had 7 more episodes planned and were filming 4x20 (aka the finale) when the pandemic struck. So they have these 6 episodes but no finale for it. [Idk if anyone else has noticed but in 5x01 there were clearly some parts cut out. For example the conversation between Desi and Riley towards the end seemed a bit jilted. Riley asking Desi to forgive her but Desi replied with yeah we are cool (still no apology ofc) I feel like something happened during that which ended up getting cut out so it could fit with the final story.]

This makes me think that they have rewritten a few bits to tie into the new finale episode. In 5x03 when Mac asked Desi to come fishing with him which was clearly something very personal to him she was like no do better.. then we see Mac's disappointed expression. She could have easily said okay but maybe not for our first date? Or its not really my thing? Or just about anything else rather than laughing in his face like that. Eventhough MD is together they still arent compatible. Mac’s final words in 5x03 was him being desperate. I truly think he is so broken and lost that Desi is the only safe thing left, the only thing he feels like he can fix right now. Once he finds himself again and heals...then it's going to hit him like a pile of bricks!!

4. But Riley doesn't have feelings anymore...WELL doesnt she? 

When it comes to Mac, Riley is always in denial. We saw it in s4 when she tells Bozer not to make her say it. I think s5 will show her finally accepting it. Finally accepting that she is in love with her best friend and that it definitely isnt Codex adrenaline because she caught the feels when Codex wasnt even around. While Mac's arc would include realising he and Desi are never going to work and that he is unhappy and that RILEY is the one for him.

[why else would they give Riley feelings for Mac? Something has to come of it.]

5. The slow burn rule.[this point is a lil complicated] 

Now season 5 is rumoured to have 13 episodes. So here’s what I think: If MacGyver follows the pattern that most shows do when it comes to slow burns, then technically MacRIley should have happened at the end of season 4. But since the season got cut short and they didnt get to air/finish their final episode the writers had to improvise. 

From what I know, 4x19 which is 5x04 for us is the episode where Mac meets Desi’s parents and 4x20 was supposed to be the finale that was left unfinished.(they are definitely moving the timeline ahead if a pre finale episode is suddenly a mid season one.) There might have been a 4x21 or 4x22 but I haven't heard anything about those....EVER.

So what I think they have decided to do instead is extend the MD storyline a bit longer just so they dont end up scrapping all their s4 episodes where they would be together and write a new finale that ties everything together, aka MacRiley.

If you think about episode counts, s4 and s5 together would have 26 episodes which is a how long a normal season runs. Basically what im trying to say is if we follow the ‘slow burns end by s4’ and take season 5 as an extension of 4 then MacRiley should get together in the season 5 finale or maybe the episode just before. (IM REALLY TRYING TO GET SOME LOGIC INTO THIS)

This would be a typical TV thing too where the couple finds out about each other’s feelings while the main arc of the show is also at its peak, which perfectly sets up a future season where fans are hyped but still has a satisfying ending.

6. So what about MacDesi?

So far the macgyver writers have given us characters we love. Think of every character on the show apart from maybe Desi... Mac, Riley, Bozer, Jack, Matty, Leanna, Samantha, Russ and even Murdoc. WE LOVE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. So then why is Desi such a strange character? I think shes purposely been written as an opposite to Mac or even Riley (I get she’s supposed to kinda replace Jack but Jack is really irreplaceable). 

It's not necessarily a bad thing its just not a great thing to do or have great execution. People have said things like Desi is a badass and shouldnt have to apologise or say I love you back to her boyfriend because she is a strong woman...I'm sorry but your opinion of who a strong woman is, is EXTREMELY skewed. A strong woman is someone who can make mistakes and when she does, she is ‘strong’ enough to own up to it, she is loyal and fierce and also caring while being a badass who can take down bad guys. And for GODS SAKE, RILEY DAVIS IS A STRONG WOMAN...people have called her mushy and feminine on twitter and I'm just very confused by that.....

Anyways before I go off on a rant, it seems like Desi is intentionally being written this way. Every opportunity they get to redeem her and make her more relatable or just a better person they just dont take it. While Rileys character arc is one of the best I've ever seen. Either its intentional or they’ve forgotten how to write characters...which is worrisome but ill give them the benefit of the doubt.

The writers also know we dont like Desi. The amount of times we've tagged them in the toxic posts or pointed out problematic things we can be sure they've seen at least half of those. So theres no way they dont know. RIGHT?

So why then is MD still a thing you may ask??

Well for one they cant break them up again off screen because of those unreleased s4 episodes. (not to mention the other parts of the audience who arent as invested in mac’s love life would probably be very confused.)

Secondly Mac has to be the one to pull the plug, not Desi. 4x13 made it seem like Desi was the annoyed one not Mac. He apologised to her which meant he wanted to fix things. 

Thirdly, they are opening the chpt one last time before they permanently close it. MD is going to be a stark contrast to macriley(it already is in every way possible). Every issue Mac and Desi had can be used to show how amazing macriley really is as two people who arent even dating yet.

Fourthly, MD being together is a sort of commentary on Macs mental health as well. We can see how happy he is with Riley but around Desi he becomes some one else. If the writers are doing this on purpose or subconsciously still remains to be seen.

And Yes keeping MD around for a few more episodes seems like a necessary risk right now but I have a feeling its going to be worth it later.

[I know we have had like 4 desi entered episodes already but I really think 5x04 will be the last of it since 5x05 is the Jack episode and 5x06 is Mac+Riley+Bozer episode with no mention of Desi at all!]

The writers know we are a dedicated bunch and they know that once MD breaks up for the last time the entire fandom will be waiting and watching. That's when the show will be at its peak. That will be the perfect moment to bring in MacRiley’s arc to a new start!

Well Anon, I will say... I know EXACTLY who you're talking about.

I have talked to her myself and we did have a bit of a friendship a while back but... We don't talk to each other anymore. I won't go into the reasons why because we'd be here all day but... Yeah. I know who you're talking about.

Currently, she likes to be HEAVILY involved with the band, namely Davey and... Yeah.

Now, personally, I think you're just listening to rumors and probably other people who talk to this girl online. If I recall, some of these newer fans who discovered the band because of her, like to "ship" her and Davey together. Which is weird. Hell, I'll even go as far as to say that this girl could be the one fueling the rumors to begin with, but who knows.

You see, when I was "friends" with her, we would fangirl ALOT over Davey. And well... There would be times that when we talked, that it was obvious, to me anyway, what her intentions were when it came to him.

Long story short, she messaged him on Instagram one day and... She hasn't left him alone since.

It also doesn't help either that it's really simple to send him a message on Facebook or Instagram and you can basically talk to him whenever you want. I understand he just wants to talk to us fans, but still. Some people can take advantage of that.

Personally, I wouldn't help fuel those rumors only because I'm sure Davey isn't saying anything, because he can probably see those kind of comments about him and her and it's making him REALLY uncomfortable. Especially if they're not actually dating.

Just to give you some peace of mind, he did mention a while back that he was "too busy to be in a relationship right now" anyway so, I hope he still thinks that way.

I would hope these rumors aren't true, because well... This girl is something else and I would feel bad for Davey if he did want to be with her, BUT what can you do if it is real, you know?

It's hard to say right now. All I can say now is this, the main reason I've distanced myself from the Calabrese fandom is namely due because of that girl in particular. I know it might seem silly to hear, but her and I did end up having a falling out, things were said and personally, I would like to leave that behind me.

I really don't want to be around the fandom anymore if she gets this involved with the band like she has. That's just how I feel. Other people who know her may not feel that way, but that's because they didn't have to go through the things I did with her.

If I were you, I would keep my eye on her. She may seem friendly when you first talk with her and what not, but that will change once her true colors start to show.

I’m quite active on the free! Fanbase and something that I’ve noticed is that the reason makoharu is as popular as it is, is because majority of its stans are people who watched free! Once like 5 years ago. They also tend to be Makoto stans and they just want it because “mako deserves it” A lot of the people who actually are into free! or focus on Haru’s feelings always ship Rinharu, and it’s because if you look at what Haru wants it’s clear that he wants Rin.

Yeah, it’s true. Lots of ppl told me that they’ve seen it completely differently after rewatching it at a mature age. But even though I can’t relate to it when it comes to anime, cause I’ve started watching it at 19, I still don’t get for what reason you can hate Rin at 13, but love at 20, you know. Just because I really can’t find any reason to hate Rin. At all. Maybe it’s cause my mom stuffed me with books since I were young, but I’ve never had such thing like I hated some character and then reread some book or rewatched some movie later and it was like a complete opposite. But at the same time, my mom recently showed her kids in class BNHA and she said that many asked “why Bakugou is so evil?” which I think is pretty dumb for a 13/14 olds to be so shallow minded. 

I mean, you can not fully understand grown up stuff, like you know, disney cartoons have something that only adults will get, but generally you should be able to see past the surface. But also I just don’t think you can appreaciate Free! being very young, cause as I said before, even tho it’s not that deep and silly at times, the beauty of it to me is that it’s so fucking relatable to ppl who’s been though stuff like that. Like not knowing what to do with yourself after school even tho you have great options.. I’ve been though that. Wanting to do what you love, but being afraid that this being your job will ruin it for you... check. Recently I’ve lost my grandpa, and this was the first time I went through smth like that, and it was a horrible time for my mom and I don’t live with my parents, but actually that picture of Rin from Yakusoku was stuck in my head and it moved me to get it together and do stuff for her, I probably wouldn’t before. So it’s not as silly as it seems if you know the feeling.

When it comes to Makoto, I’ve talked about it in this post already, I do not get why he has so many fans. I find it super sad. Cause every smart adult would never see Makoto as a reliable person in life (and that’s like the main button makoharu try to push). This fandom constantly markets him as an extremely good and etc while they dont even see that usually he’s either spineless, either plain stupid (that ocean saving Rei scene just pisses me off so fucking much to this day). I feel like the “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” is about him seriously. Every good friend can bring food, but at the end of the day it’s the tough situations that counts at least to me. And when it comes to them, if anybody noticed we’re on our own. Or we need to call Rin.

About “he deserves it”... And Haru doesn’t deserve anything in their opinion? Being with the person who makes him feel alive and his heart go boom-boom, who makes him reach for the stars and see the world, makes him want silly things like rainbows in the pool... that doesn’t matter, right? haha 

I think when you ship something, you should think about both sides. You can’t just love one and don’t care for other... it leads to... well, this. Cause Rin makes Haru the best version of himself and Haru makes Rin the best version of himself. And that’s how it usually works in literally all of my ships.

Also this whole thing the makoharu fans are saying remind me of Yokozawa from “Sekaiichi Hatsukoi”, who went “but I was with him all the time, when you weren’t.. you left”. That’s not how it even works dude, and just because there was a misunderstanding doesn’t mean they can’t love each other anymore. It wasn’t Onodera’s fault and Rin’s fault, yeah, they left in the heat of the moment, but sometimes circurmstances play a bigger role. Plus let’s be honest, it needed to happen, otherwise they wouldn’t be this amazing and strong as they’re right now. That “I loved you before, but the person I’m in love with right now is you in the present.” got stuck in my head forever. I truly believe that Haru loves Rin even more as he is right now, same goes to Wangxian, Mikayuu and lots of ships. Separation is sad, but sometimes its needed for characters to get to where they are now.  

I feel like this ship also started at times, when it was “very cool” to brand every ship ever as “abusive” for no reason and I laughed a lot at this phase, especially young ppl tended to throw stuff like “he’s not good for her/him”, when even a light argument happened. And that’s just so dumb, cause I felt like most didn’t even know what they’re talking about, it was just “cool” xD. I’m glad this phase has passed tho, cause it started to get.. not funny lol

I find it extremely hilarious tho that after all it’s been proven that Rin is what best for Haru, which I think was obvious from the very beginning. And I haven’t seen any new makoharu related anything for ages, nor on youtube, nor on “free!” tag, so I sometimes even forget that it’s the most popular ship in Free. In 2014 maybe? I’m just happy here, cause Harurin are together, they’re happy, they got evething they wanted, and Rin is glued to us right now haha What else do I need. I’m gonna edit the kisses myself haha I’m working on stuff to get better at this lolz

Sometimes I wonder if the reason they dont give levi or schmico a storyline is because this is a show with a mainly female viewer ship and the writers feel they cant relate to a m/m relationship.

That’s definitely a point. Because we mostly see the majority of the relationships from the female character’s sight. I think that’s why Calzona was so, so popular. Not just because (or should i say despite?) them being LGBT rep, but because many viewers could see themselves in both of them.

I think it also has a lot to do with the age of the (female) viewership. Because I do see the tendency (throughout several different fandoms) of young (female) viewers taking a liking to mlm ships. With that I don’t just mean those who fetishize mlm relationships, but who actively enjoy seeing that representation, with many of them being LGBT themselves or just in general not conforming to heteronormative norms.

Looking how the show handled Schmico, all i can is shake my head. It was an obvious short-sighted attempt to get new (and younger) viewers. I say short sighted, because they got a nice storyline for a season and a half that wasn’t even great anyways and then played bullshit bingo with them, because they didn’t know what else to do with them (and especially Nico).

So yeah, I think it is a mixture of not knowing how to write a storyline for them. To be fair it’s their 17th season, but that’s no excuse. If you don’t know what to write anymore, please just end it or hire writers who do have the knowledge.

The only ending everyone seems to ignore is v3 because it’s just... it’s just a mess.

Honestly nonny, having only finished the dang thing yesterday I... don't know.

(I kinda went off into a spiel, so feel free to skip to the part where I talk about survivors and what I think happens next)

I understand the mixed response a LOT. I mean- I see what they were going for. The 4th wall break was cool, and the (sorta?) reappearance of past characters was pretty damn awesome. I like that the creators are definitely self aware- and there's a kind of 'learn to laugh at yourself' sort of thing.

On the other hand it can almost seem a little too mocking?

I get the whole yaknow. 'Fictional characters are aware they're fictional and rebel against their creators' thing but- like-?

As I mentioned before, thing is, Tsumugi is not us? We aren't exactly intentionally cruel? There's a BIG difference between the kind of fiction in our world and in their world.

What does Tsumugi call it? "Real fiction"?. Yeah- thing is- we don't have that. We don't have the technology for it, and I certainly hope we wouldn't abandon ethics for it either!!! We can't have 'real' fiction, because in our world, all fiction is fake! The closest you have is fiction about real people, perhaps, but- that's not even remotely the same thing?

So it does come across as a little... um- preachy.

We're supposed to represent the audience but... like- the audience fucking suck! What was that they said during the argument armament? "This guy should have died instead of Kaede!" Like- fucking hell. Imagine saying that to someone, who can HEAR you say it, and who's MURDER you could potentially watch unfold before your very eyes as a result of YOUR actions. I mean- look how empathetic some of us are to ACTUAL fictional characters. Could you imagine if we were in a similar situation to the outside world in V3???

Maybe it's because I keep imagining the v3 cast as like- sentient AI, instead of "just fiction". Because I can't imagine anyone being so sadistic or apathetic otherwise.

So uh- yeah. I don't... know how I feel about that. It's not- very satisfying?

With sdr2, the whole "none of this is real, the killing game is all a lie, you're in a fake world!" felt like a relief ! Whereas here it's more like- "what?? It's all fake? What the hell was the point then?!"

"Nothing matters!" vs "nothing matters..."

The whole HOPE VS DESPAIR, FUTURE VS PAST thing worked, because, well, it's something we can all understand. We have all felt hope and we have all felt despair. We've all, at some point in our lives, felt stuck in the past, unable to or scared to move on.

(Hey- some of us still feel like that now, even).

The first game was very simple- hope and despair. Still relatable, but fairly basic- effective to set up the foundation for the follow up.

The second game made things a little more complicated. Sometimes it's more complicated then just- choosing between Hope and Despair. We refuse to fall into Despair, but we can't just blindly have Hope.

So we choose the Future. We can't promise it'll be a good one OR a bad one. But whatever happens- we need to move on. The only way we can make things change is by making that choice, to create our OWN future.

V3 felt very... complex. It started to get kind of... uh... philosophical? And- don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with that. It just... it kind of shifted from TRUTH VS LIE to FICTION VS REALITY. And whilst the latter definitely sounds interesting- I don't really know if I liked the direction they took with it-? I wish they'd kept the focus on TRUTH VS LIE a lot more.

(Fiction and Reality are like extensions of Lie and Truth but- only to a certain extent? Really?)

It's kind of harder to get into the final fight in V3 because... what are you fighting? The outside world? I mean- I can't speak for the rest of you, but as far as I'm aware I'm not a fictional character.

(If I am- then wow someone's a reallly bad writer huh?)

I can relate to Hope. I can relate to Future.

I can't relate to Fiction.

I THOUGHT maybe the message was a warning of the dangers of escapism ('please dont go as far as to erase your own personality just to be a part of a type of fiction you like' definitely seems fitting for this fandom)- but the message "fiction has the power to change the world!" kinda contradicts that. I mean- I do like that message, but- I don't like the idea of a series about killing games being heavily influential-!

The whole problem was that people grew so obsessed with the series that they threw away their lives! Is that not the point you should be focusing on-!!!!

The outside world in this universe fucking sucks. So they changed their mind, big DEAL! that's not comforting knowing they let this shit continue for 53 seasons-! I mean, maybe Makoto and Hajime were all 100% fictional, but at some point they started putting real people into these games, and everyone was ok with that!

I'm glad Shuichi got through to them at last but...

Someone said something which resonated with me- "in a vacuum, this is good". Like... on it's own, I thought the ending was great! It was entertaining, for sure. And the whole concept and stuff was unexpected and interesting. You gotta give em points for originality.

The problem comes with it being the 3rd game in a series. (Ignoring UDG I mean-). When a series becomes a Trilogy, you gotta make it good. This is presumably the last game in the (main) series too. And- after the UTTER NARRATIVE DISAPPOINTMENT of dr3- can you blame people for wanting more? People fell in love for THH and SDR2 (and UDG even if its not part of the main series) for a reason- and, for me at least, a biiiig part of that reason was the continued storyline. The last chapter of sdr2 was the hypest shit EVER. when you see glimpses of the previous game bleed into this one, only for it to turn into what's like- a full crossover???? The previous game isn't just mentioned, it's a straight up sequel!!!! I had absolutely no idea Makoto and co would return (i thought the games were separate) so when i saw that they'd be interacting with the new cast- yoooooooooooooooo-!

Hell, even seeing alter ego again made me go WILD.

V3 plays upon these expectations, and subverts them, but... not necessarily in a good way? You- kind of feel cheated? (Idk if you're an avengers fan, but- it's like expecting *Endgame* and instead getting...

Well- Endgame).

The ending isn't bad persay it's just- not quite what one would expect? I can definitely understand why people are disappointed. The problem is, instead of standing alone, you can't help but consider it as part of the series. Individually, I don't think the ending was that weak or bad, but in comparison to the series as a whole?

Maki- I liked Maki quite a bit! She's a bit cold, yeah, but I warmed up to her after hearing her backstory.

I found it annoying (if understandable) that no one trusted her at first. I thought it was sweet that her, Kaito and Shuichi had this friendship trio. They really trusted each other- it was very refreshing. I also love me a strong girl. Her romance thing with Kaito was a little... forced. I'd have found it more meaningful if they kept it more subtle/ambiguous (though i suppose they needed smth to use against her in the final trial sooo-).

Himiko comes across as like An Actual Child at times and at the start it was VERY annoying. Surprisingly, I warmed up to her eventually. I knew in advance she'd be a survivor so i kinda thought "well she's gonna stick around so might as well try to like her". I do appreciate that she underwent a character arc too, and it was sweet to see how she became a more active, determined person. I wish it hadn't taken Tenko's death for her to finally start changing but whatever. She is quite a cute character and after a while became more endearing then annoying.... (for the most part).

Was she in my top 3 picks for a survivor? No.

Tsumugi- ah. She's not a survivor, is she? I knew well in advance she was the mastermind so I didn't really warm up to her all that much during the final chapters, for obvious reasons.

Shuichi- if shuichi hadn't survived I think that would have been the breaking point for me, honestly.

Overall- uh... they aren't... the ideal picks. Shuichi is the only one I really wanted to see survive, I was neutral towards the others. Tbh I was just happy anyone was alive by the end of that.

Waking up- for the sake of my sanity, I like to think that after the survivors wake up, they threaten to sue and/or maim the shit out of the dr team if they don't start on reanimating their 'dead' friends right fucking now. Surely they gotta keep their consciousness' somewhere in those memories banks right? I mean- what if they ever wanted a "surprise return from the dead" plotline? Surely they gotta keep em somewhere? Right?

Whether or not they reawaken as their in-game or pre-game selves, who knows. Whichever you prefer, I guess. Maybe a mixture of both.

After fighting a lobster-man with nipples drawn on him with a Sharpie, Saitama decides to do a workout routine every day, and somehow ends up becoming the most powerful known being in the universe. His main issue is that now, he literally can take down any villain with a single punch, and he’s very bored of it.

Best Qualities: Animation is bomb, music is dope, humor is funnie, and Best Boy is a man whose superpower is riding a bicycle. Also Saitama egg head

If you were in a coma for all of 2015, this is the main thing u missed. Moving on.

Genre: Romance/ Comedy/ Slice of Life

Expectation: Smol shoujo protag girl grows closer to her oblivious crush through a fated, if awkward, incident which reveals an embarrassing secret that has to be kept at all costs. Through one another they gain more quirky friends, help each other grow, and, eventually, the male lead realizes that what he needs has been beside him all along.

Reality: The crush writes romance manga, and that is literally all the man cares about. It’s not a secret, but when he told people they didn’t believe him. Nozaki and Sakura grow closer, but only because he confuses her confession with a request to be his Beta. They gain quirky friends through one another, but there is zero character development throughout the entire fucking cast. Every episode is run by Idiot Plot. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. / Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan

Genre: Shounen/ Supernatural/ Fucking Everything tbh

Expectation: Slice-of-life supernatural where protag has psychic powers, albeit limited ones, and has to keep them a secret at all costs for fear of his safety. He has a few friends he loves and cherishes, and at least two girls who are in love with him that he has to choose between-- all of which are people he wants to protect from his double-life.

Reality: Kusuo is very aware that he is the protagonist of an anime, and he does not want to be. Born with pink hair? He rewrites the human genome to make colored hair normal. End of the world looming? He just keeps rewinding time so he doesn’t have to deal with it. Harem situation? He actively uses his powers to avoid all love interests at all times (see the above). The plot of each episode is him trying to stop the plot as quickly as possible without killing anyone. The main issue is that everyone around him is either dumb or just generally attractive to plot-driving circumstances, and they all, for some reason, want him to be in on their adventures.

Best Qualities: Heavy “me and the boys” energy, plenty of Idiot Plot, so funny that my 47yo mom who hates anime admitted that it’s funny, meta as fuck, occasionally sweet scenes, equally good dub and sub, Saiki is babie

The fandom for this shit is like. Nonexistent. Apparently it came out the same season as Mob Psycho 100, so that might be why. I almost didn’t watch it, but I got bored and it turned out to be a serious gem. Go watch if ur having a bad day, it will make u cry laughing

Sakamoto Desu Ga/ Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto

Genre: Slice of life/ Comedy

Expectation: God I don’t even know. I’d say a typical slice of life where the quiet kid is bullied but makes friends, there’s a love triangle as they grow up together through high school, yadda yadda, but look at this dude. I can’t imagine him being anything other than what he is-- a legend.

Reality: The entire show is just a question of how extra one man can be, and how well he can pull it off. Sakamoto is an “average” high school senior (in the sense that he has no supernatural abilities), but he’s....far more than that. He’s Sebastian Michaelis if he’d never been a demon. Everything always works out for him in the most ridiculous of ways-- he’s just that good. He makes a McDonald’s uniform look like Prada. He’s so smooth his bully ends up having a crush on him (and yes, it is a gay crush. no heteros in this show). 

Best Qualities: lots of homo content. the side characters, inspired by Sakamoto’s grace, all become better people, and you root for them. The circumstances are always average, but the presentation is fucking riveting. Watch to send ur depression into remission.

Nichijou/ My Ordinary Life

Genre: Slice of Life/ Comedy

Expectation: Cute girls do cute, girly things and have fun with Their Close Good Friends (TM).

Reality: Cute girls get into very bizarre situations with extremely manic energies. Sometimes, the situations are normal, but the girls react in a bizarre, manic fashion. It will make you alarm-laugh.

Best Qualities: Adorable art style, little continuity, relatable as fuck

A nice little watch if you’re bored. I think the eps are on YouTube.

Pop Team Epic/ Poputepepiku

Genre: Only God Knows

Expectation: Probably a cutesy 4koma-type thing with 2 schoolgirls having shenanigans.

Reality: A regular acid trip with lesbian icons Popuko and Pipimi who are not schoolgirls, but gods. Like if Eric Andre and Hannibal Buress were turned into omnipotent anime icons. Watch at your own risk.

Best Qualities: Lots of unexpected parodies and references amongst a shitpost of a show. The OP is a bop. Popuko terrifies me, but also empowers me as a young woman because she will not hesitate to kill a bitch. She and Pipimi love each other a whole lot, so it is LGBTQ content, which is always a plus. 

I’m sure you’ve seen this one floating around. It will make you feel fear, and then laugh. Now, finally...

Ouran Highschool Host Club

Genre: Romance/ Comedy

Expectation: The protagonist is a girl who is mistaken for a boy and must be the servant of six rich, handsome young men, all of which are in love with her, and her secret must be kept at all costs. A reverse harem anime with plenty of fanservice.

Reality: Haruhi is a genderfluid queen who doesn’t give a fuck what others think she is. Because she broke a Conveniently-Placed Vase and is relatably poor, she has to pay off her debt by being a host herself-- which means male-presenting when flirting with her female classmates to make her dough. The six rich, handsome young men all share three brain cells, and most of those cells go to the character who has one line per episode (usually, it’s “Yeah”. I hope that VA got paid well). The only love interest-- the “leader” and most popular of the six men-- is so dead-set on their club being his Found Family, he confuses his romantic feelings for Haruhi with paternal ones. This is obvious to everyone but him. He never gets the brain cells. 

Best Qualities: Trans characters!! Lesbians!! Extreme “me and the boys” energy, except they’re all rich, so shenanigans skyrocket. Many 4th wall breaks. The most powerful Host looks like he’s 5. Any “fanservice” is never played straight. Takes the Found Family trope to a whole new level. Nice Parks & Rec-quality balance between hysterical and sweet. Everyone is in drag at some point.

I know all of us senior citizens grew up on this shit, but you younguns need to watch the classics to appreciate the newfangled stuff. I recommend watching when you’re in a cheesy rom-com mood.

well tom king has good titles like mister miracle obviously and i heard the vision one was a great one too but personally anything he wrote ever gets canceled out by the heroes in crisis debacle . he killed wally west bro i’ll never forgive him. also his bruce and selina ???? i don’t trust them. he writes them way too horny to the point they were [redacted] on a beach while alfred...i mean i don’t need to say anything about alfred. so yeah i think i’d deck him if i saw him

on a more serious note, i think you need to analyse why you see heroes in crisis as a ”debacle” (is it perhaps because fandom people on here have a grudge against tom king?) instead of a good standalone story that treads uncharted territory in a respectful and realistic way. discussions about heroes’ mental health is immensely important (on an objective level as well as personally speaking) and you can’t praise mister miracle while hating hic for doing the exact same thing unless you acknowledge that mister miracle didn’t involve any fandom darlings and thus gets a free pass from the general public despite both stories accomplishing their goals in similar ways. a view of mental illness that isnt needlessly sanitised or framed as an “us vs them” issue (which is to say: villains are often written off as mentally ill but not heroes) and faces the ugly, human reality of it is literally what makes tom’s writing absolutely incredible in all circumstances

personally i don’t consider “i’ll never forgive him”, “i don’t trust them” to be actual reasons without a genuine cause behind them. for example, i dont trust geoff johns because his work lately has been consistently tending towards genuinely harmful opinions in an irl sense. you don’t need a deep reason to DISLIKE something, of course, but when the tom king hatred is so prevalent in every dc-related fandom space to the point of him regularly getting death threats on twitter and at cons while he was still writing batman (2016) then it does start raising questions and most of the answers are “big name fans dont like to see their faves actually written well” or “reading comprehension has left the building”

i need you to understand that bruce has always been written that way. it’s not selina he’s got an unplanned kid with! that’s talia! it’s not selina he’s slept with on the cave floor or in a hospital or who calls him deedee because they Did It so many times they hit double digits, that’s silver in the widening gyre (2009)! yeah, it’s ridiculous or awkward or whatever but none of these things are written by tom king and they’re still very much bruce being unbelievably horny on main. whatever he does with selina isn’t ooc and doesn’t take anything away from a good story. if you’d actually read tom’s batman then you would know that the entire point of bruce’s little unwilling vacation with selina is that he thinks it’s all fine on the home front. remember that? remember him saying he literally got a mssg from alfred saying everything’s going as planned? characters dont have to be aware of everything the readers are and vice versa. it’s called writing.

I really, genuinely don’t understand why people think Isa, and only Isa, is irredeemable? All textual evidence points to Isa having been a vulnerable teenager brainwashed by an older person in a position of power over him, exactly like Terra and Riku.

This is a really good post. I totally agree, I miss pre-KH3 Saix/Isa, too. His character was handled so much more respectfully. I think the lack of sympathy for Isa was a major reason why Nomura decided to pretty much write him off in KH3, which is such a waste. I think it was fairly obvious that Isa was supposed to be possessed and not really a bad guy. Anyone can see that after BBS he was going to be redeemed in the end. TBH, I think the reason why so many people in this fandom had no sympathy for him and demonized him was because he got in the way of their preferred ship/trio. 

Saix was a child when he was kidnapped by the Organization. He and Axel clearly did not want to be there; they’d been planning how to get free for ten years, under pain of death if they were discovered. They were being held captive. Xemnas literally mutilated him so that he could never get away even if he ran (Recusant, btw, is a word that means ‘a person who refuses to submit to a higher authority’).

Yep. Saix was a prisoner of the organization. There was never anything suggesting he was there of his own free will. He was mutilated so they could keep track of where he was at all times. The organization has certain rules. You cannot leave on your own. By changing this about his backstory, you ruin his whole character.

Everything Saix and Axel planned against the Apprentices was completely justified. Except for Ienzo, all of the adults were complicit in holding them captive, even if they didn’t actively abuse either of them personally. Xaldin even advocates killing children who don’t want to be there; he was the one who said they should kill Xion for being a traitor (Saix was the one who defended her).

Yeah, I always thought so, too. Axel seemed to have a very good reason to kill the apprentices. By changing his backstory, they make him look like Rambo for no reason. It does Axel a disservice. And yes, Xaldin is horrible. He faced NO consequences for anything he did. It’s strange how Isa had to atone but not Dilan.

Saix did no worse than Riku did, but it took him years of brainwashing to get that way, where it only took Riku a few weeks. Riku turned on Sora and tried to kill him for completely petty reasons, whereas Saix only turned on Axel when it was a case of killing Axel or being killed himself, a position Axel had knowingly put him in.

Yeah, I always thought KH1 Riku was pretty bad. I liked him, but his reasons for turning evil in the first game were extremely petty and hard to sympathize with. I was hoping BBSV2 would retcon things and “fix” him somewhat.

Terra was also brainwashed and manipulated by Xehanort, but nobody is calling for Terra’s head. He’s been enslaved by Xehanort for ten years, but no one holds him responsible for the things Xemnas did, which were far worse than anything Saix has ever done.

Completely agree. Terra doesn’t have to atone for what Xemnas did. So why should Isa have to atone for what Saix did when Saix was also a Nort?

Saix never lies to the player about his goals. In fact, Saix never directly lies, period. His objections to Axel’s behavior are all ‘Your friendship is an illusion’ and ‘your feelings are a lie.’ Saix has a stated objection to self-deception as a moral rule. His last words are begging for his heart back. This is not a man bullshitting about genuinely feeling empty and incomplete.

Saix was always a sad character. Literally the only the only two organization members that Sora felt sad for in KH2 were Axel and Saix. Both of them were the ones that were longing for hearts the most. Even in Days, you could tell that Roxas felt pity for Saix too when he got on his knees and was begging for his heart.

There is literally no way Saix knew about the Nort thing. Xigbar taunts Saix to his face in the Days extra cutscene about the heart thing and Saix fails to understand what he means. Saix is also being deliberately kept in the dark about Xion’s actual development for the same reason. He had no way of knowing he was running his head into a snare and did not choose to be a Nort.

Absolutely! That was one of the most interesting things about Saix. Saix was NOT like Xigbar. He did NOT voluntarily become a Nort. Days built up a mystery about him. And then they just completely threw it away!

His treatment of Xion was reprehensible, but he had at the time no way of knowing she was a real person. This obviously doesn’t justify his behavior but it explains it. He believed her to be literally a machine and treated her as though she were just a clever facsimile that didn’t work right. The fact that he defended her from Xaldin (by saying she was just malfunctioning and had no free will so therefore couldn’t be punished as a traitor) proves he didn’t think she had feelings.  

Yeah, I think when Saix defended Xion when Xaldin called her a deserter was interesting. I don’t think he cared about Xion being eliminated. But she wasn’t a “deserter”. She was just a “broken” machine. Leaving is against the rules. And so is losing control. Broken things are more likely to go berserk and lose control. Hmmmm.

Kingdom Hearts is a Disney game about the redemptive power of friendship and healthy support networks. Saix’s main reason for falling to Xehanort was the belief he had to do everything himself, and his rejection of friendship as a force that could help him. Riku and Terra did the same thing. Riku was redeemed because Sora forgave him. Terra will certainly be redeemed by Aqua. There is no textual reason why Isa should not follow this pattern.

Exactly! I love Riku and Terra, but I think Isa was even more innocent than either of them. He was a victim of mind control! I don’t even think he needed Lea to forgive him. He just needed to be revived by him.

I've talked to a couple of people in fandom who are in their early 20s or late teens (18+), and after they come to trust me a bit, with a lot of hand-wringing and "oh my god I know this is wrong and sick and evil what is wrong with me" they'll confess their kinks. I'll give them a couple of rational reasons why that's fine so long as fiction stays fiction, and they may not release all of that shame right away, but they relax just a fraction. These people aren't active antis, they're not interested in going out of their way to bully anyone, they just heard a lot of messages that these things are Bad, and that seemed pretty reasonable to them. If someone else was accused of it, they couldn't really argue that that was Bad, in their worldview. The only problem is, they're Bad too, and no one must know of it. To some degree, the shamelessness is in their eyes harder to accept than the kinks themselves. Yes, plenty of them have dirtybadwrong kink alts, where they talk to other people on their dirtybadwrong kink alts, and keep that off their main identity. But they're not just doing it as some of us might, to avoid bullying and harassment, but as a way of signaling that they know right from wrong, even if they are human and sin too. I think about how attitudes towards piracy also changed in the past 15 or so years. It went from "friends share links of the new episode with friends," where plenty of people would have the links on their LJs for their followers, to something where...eh, we all pirate, I mean we've all done it at some point, none of us is without sin there, but you're not supposed to talk about it, and if you do, you're supposed to say it sheepishly, showing you know it's wrong. People will even outright fight someone who says piracy is morally fine, they'll get dogpiled, but when any of those people can't find something legally easily, or ehhh you have to sign up for a whole new streaming service for that, or that's a bit expensive but I want it, or whatever, they never uninstalled utorrent or anything. It's a "necessary evil," or a thing we all do but the good people feel bad about. Most of the people who feel this way aren't really invested enough to lead any anti charges. But when you get Canceled, they won't defend you, either. They'll avoid you to protect their own reputations, nothing personal. Privately, they may think your content was fine, but you went just a little bit too far being so brazen and shameless about it, that if you'd just chill and make a dirty fap sock like everyone else you'd be fine, but they can't very well say so, for obvious reasons. Another example of this: look at the posts for any "problematic" ship. Like if you want a really problematic one, how about RickMorty. All the shippers on their Rickmorty socks are all "ahh yes delicious sin! :D" The owners of those accounts wouldn't give you the time of day from their mains if you got "canceled," even if it was for some much lesser infraction.

i just. dont even know how to deal with this. like how is this an anti-lite thing instead of just. normal. like yeah the amount of Shame about it is unhealthy but i also dont trust anyone on ffa to be reporting honestly on that, like i dont think anyone is going crying to this person like Ooohh im such an evil person im so sowwyyy, theyre probably like. ‘i like gross stuff but i know its bad irl.’ like i just cant get past how anything they talk about anti-lite stuff its just... literally normal... i know i know that enforcing ‘normalcy’ is bad and all i just dont know how else to like. put it. i just dont think its puritan or weird or evil to keep private things private. theres a difference between the friends i rapidly made then lost in 2016 who were like ‘omg yikesy’ because i like... watched hannibal... vs the friends i still have who i know are very uncomfortable with certain interests or kinks or whatever so i just like... would not bring those up with them... because thats basic human courtesy... its okay to curate a space where you talk about that stuff and a space where you dont... online and especially irl... and like sure if you want everything to be on your main thats your choice because online doesnt have to be real life but you also have to kinda understand that you cant expect it to always go smoothly if you like. interact with random sfw accounts from your nsfw. because thats a bit like entering a certain type of space in like a provocative manner. like this is just....... how the world works, dude...
