Started reading The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins, which seems to be obligatory reading for any biologist.
I love how, as it is a book first published in 1976 in a field that has rapidly evolved since then, it starts with many forwards and comes with footnotes addressing the many criticisms and new research that has come since. I feel as if I were reading a Tumblr post with repeated clarifications from bad faith readings, or a list of terms and conditions. Science is self-correcting and humans are subjective.
One of the many notes he addresses is the title itself. While the word "selfish" has too many negative connotations, I would argue the grief over people only reading the title/first chapter and misunderstandings and further clarifications needed is worth it for the punchier title. I think most biologist students understand selfish to mean self-perpetuating. He makes a good argument regardless.
There are some publications that came out after that have since corrected/clarified many of the points in the book, so I need to read those too.

anti-intellectualism, classism, and capitalist bootlicking go hand in hand
Tumblr media
[ID: The meme from Spongebob of Manray attempting to return Patrick's wallet, while Patrick insists it's not his. Manray asks, "So you agree with this?", while holding up Patrick's ID card, which has now been edited to read, "Books should be accessible to everyone", with the word everyone underlined for emphasis. Patrick replies, "Yes, I do." Manray: So you agree that libraries are good." Patrick: Yes, libraries are good." Manray: And you also agree that if I buy a book, and let my friends borrow it, that's good too?" Patrick: Yes, that's good too. Manray: You agree that letting my friends borrow a book I paid for isn't stealing from anyone? Patrick: Duh. You paid for it, you can let anyone borrow it you want. That's not stealing. Manray: And you also agree that if people are able to borrow a book for free to see if they like it, they're more likely to buy their own copies? Patrick: Yeah, obviously. People buy books if they like them. Manray: So, to be clear: If I buy a book, and let 10 friends read it, one at a time, you agree none of us are stealing, because I paid for the book and my friends are only borrowing it. Letting people borrow something you bought isn't stealing. Patrick: It's not stealing. You can let people borrow your stuff. You own it, it's yours. Manray: So to reiterate: You agree that books should be available to everyone. You agree libraries are good. You agree its fine to let people borrow books you own, and you agree letting people borrow books from you isn't stealing anything from anyone. Correct? Patrick: Correct. Manray: So you agree the Internet Archive's lending library, made up of books they own, is good. Patrick: No. The Internet Archive is evil for lending out books they own for people to read. That's stealing. End Id.]

hey! could I get some hc’s for the series of Dave and the popular girl? swf and nsfw if possible. TYSM!!!💗
omg yes absolutely! so glad you asked, I really love writing for these two <333 don’t know if you wanted nsfw headcanons too but i kept it to just sfw ones for now, hope you enjoy!
would love to hear you guys’ thoughts and headcanons about these two as well :3
“so? whatever.” dave lizewski x popular!fem!reader: landing page.
Tumblr media
♡ even though your family is way wealthier than dave's, he still buys you gifts. flowers, your favourite snacks, those earrings you were gushing to him about. yes, you could easily buy them for yourself, but that doesn't matter to him.
♡ you make up for it to him by buying him expensive, rare, limited edition comic books.
♡ one time he cried because of how happy he was when you got him a special spiderman comic. you happily sat on his lap while he explained his favourite parts about it after.
♡ you know that meme that’s like “he asked for no pickles on his hamburger”? yeah. that’s you two. he may be tall, muscly and your city’s most popular vigilante, but he’s also dave. and dave is still getting used to sticking up for himself.
♡ it doesn’t make it any better that your brothers friends still mess with him sometimes. so, you’ve had to set the record straight to them a few times. cussing them out, threatening to beat their asses, or just pulling in your boyfriend for a deep kiss to really drive the point home.
♡ dave does the same thing when todd or marty make a comment about you being a bimbo, or a mean girl, neither of which are true. and he makes sure to remind them that the only reason they’re not getting shoved into lockers anymore is also because of you.
♡ surprisingly, your dad has taken a serious liking to your boyfriend too. he was skeptical of him at first, thinking he was some pervert trying to get into his daughter’s pants, but he sees that not only is dave is smart, he really, really loves you.
♡ and either way, he could never deny his little girl of anything. even if it is loving the biggest dork he’s ever seen.
♡ when you go shopping, he always carries your bags. all of them. not like it’s hard for him, with those beefy arms.
♡ he also loves it when you give him a little fashion show showing everything that you bought. then again, he’d think you’re beautiful even if you were wearing a trash bag.
♡ he always loves to watch you get ready. you think he’s not paying attention, reading a comic or scrolling on his phone, but he’s watching your reflection in your vanity mirror out of the corner of his eye. smiling at the way you look so concentrated when doing your eyeliner, or how cute the pout of your lips is when you apply your lipgloss.
♡ WILL sing along with whatever pop song you put on. taylor swift, ariana grande, olivia rodrigo, he’s humming along at first and suddenly you realise. he knows all the words. and he’s just fully singing along with you because he knows you love those songs.
♡ dave is not much of a gossiper himself, but he will always hear you out when you have some juicy tea to spill. like no way, jessica really said that? god, she would have the nerve, no wonder her boyfriend cheated on her— you giggle, it’s a funny sight, seeing your nerdy sweet boyfriend get so into the drama of it all.
♡ he’s really happy and really grateful that in the end, he’s never a secret for you. you’re very happy to have him as your boyfriend, and you’re not afraid to let the world know. anyone who has a problem with that would have to deal with your sharp tongue and biting remarks.

Moon Boys as Subject Teachers
Tumblr media
Warnings: None that I know of
Author’s Snip: This was inspired by @ominoose's post for Oscar Issac characters as school subjects teachers so shoutout to them for the inspo.
I’ll shut up now. Enjoy! And don’t be afraid to request.
Tumblr media
Steven Grant - History & English/Literature
A bit of an obvious choice but there's a reason
Steven 100% is a favorite amongst the students
He actually makes learning history and reading fun for them because he talks so enthusiastically about everything in each unit and finds ways to let the kids engage in what's happening
He tries his best to personalize the lessons with either making a worksheet for it to help the kids take in the knowledge or make a slide show for demonstration and visualizing what's being said
His slideshows are actually very iconic because he makes sure they look nice so that the kids will pay attention to them. He has an occasional outdated meme but you know what he's trying and the kids know that
Steven's classroom is also very decorated with both posters that he bought or ones made by students (matter of fact poster making is an extra credit thing if you need it)
He's very attentive to his students and believes that it's crucial for teaching. If a student is struggling then he gladly helps them and works on finding a way to help them learn the lessons in their own way, and if they need to spend some time after school then he'd be happy to stay and see what they need
Steven hates having to be strict and disciplinary but if he needs to then he will.
If a kid misses an assignment's deadline it's okay as long as they give him a heads-up and they turn it in before a unit is done or something. But if someone is actively not doing their homework or assigned work then he will have a talk with them and give them detention if need be and make them do that work
As for troublemakers who disrupt the class he does the whole politely telling them to quiet down or stop, to telling them more sternly, to standing outside till he tells them to come back in, and then the final strike is sending them to the office
On a lighter note, Steven is definitely the kind of teacher to let students eat in his classroom during lunch as long as they don't make a mess and clean after themselves and actually uses that to get to know the kids outside of the lessons
I firmly believe that Steven has talked to the school about creating a book club of some kind so that kids can be in an environment that treats reading as an activity you can do rather than something you NEED to do and sort of does the same with his literature and english students
For example, my senior year English teacher had us do fifteen minute reading time at the beginning of class each day with a book we checked out at the library. I feel like he'd do something like that
But anyway, yeah, he's definitely petitioned to have a book club or some other club similar to that
Marc Spector - Math
I actually see him being more of a student counselor but I just get this weird sense that if I had to pick a subject that he would teach then I'd say math like algebra, calculus, and geometry, for some reason
I don't know he just seems like he's good at math and would be fine with teaching it
His class, despite being a math class, isn't so bad.
Marc's one of those chill teachers who teaches what he needs to and lets the students do their own thing so long as it's not causing any trouble
The first half of class is him teaching the students a new formula, how to do it, how it applies to the world and stuff and then he writes some equations on the board for the students to solve on their own on a piece of paper that they give to him at the end of class just to confirm that they were listening
He's not an easy A exactly. He is when you actually try and listen though
Marc hardly has rules to be honest, they're basic as hell. His class rules are just "Pay attention, do your classwork and homework, yes you are allowed to use a calculator if you need/want to, yes they are allowed on tests, show your work on the sheet or a piece of paper as long as you write your name on it and staple it to the worksheet, don't cheat on your tests, and don't disrupt the class"
He's also very lenient on things. You can listen to music while you work so long as he isn't actively teaching. You can chew gum so long as you aren't chewing or blowing it loudly and sticking it on the desks. You can freely talk to your friends and classmates as long as you aren't bugging them, being loud, or doing it while he is teaching.
Due to the free talking he knows all the gossip around school simply because the kids will be talking about it while they work
He says he doesn't care/isn't into gossip but he secretly moves the kids who gossip toward his desk so that he can hear it while he works at his desk when he changes up the seating chart every once in a while
On top of that he gets to know his students because he will walk around the classroom to stretch his legs and will start small talk with the kids that sometimes leads to full conversations
Marc is very no-nonsense or slacking off though. If a kid is not doing their work then he tells them to start doing it or else they'll need to do it at home along with their homework if they don't get it done at the end of class. As for troublemakers, he just sends them out or to the office since he's learned that more want the attention
Jake Lockley - PE
I know a lot of people say that Jake would be a Spanish/foreign language teacher, and I can see that, but to me, this man gives off PE teacher energy (in a good way)
Jake is sort of the tough love kind of PE teacher that still makes the kids do the activities but he's not cruel
He also doesn't just stand there. If he can he will do the exercises with the kids so that they don't try and be a smart ass with him. He will run the mile with the kids but stays behind so that no one can walk it while he's not looking. It also helps boost the confidence of the kids who don't run as fast and fall behind by being there and praising them for keeping it going
"You're going great. It's about being active not pushing yourself."
If a student feels sick or is on their period and having cramps he'll ask how bad it is and depending on how severe it is he'll let them sit out on that day if it's bad or walk a few laps around the track if they can. "Just as long as you're doing something, okay?"
He's not an idiot though. If they use the sick or period card too many times and it doesn't add up then he calls them out and tells them to do the activity
"Matter of fact, do double because you think I'm stupid."
Jake also isn't oblivious to the fact that he's "the hot teacher" that the female teachers and students blush and giggle at. Of course, he doesn't do anything about either because it's unprofessional and one is a literal crime
But he's not dumb. He knows that some teachers check him out while he's running and exercising with the kids outside
Jake is a part of after-school/extracurricular programs too.
He's definitely a coach for one of the school's sports teams, he finds it to be a great way to give kids something to do after school instead of running around and possibly causing trouble. Jake also likes seeing the kids who've got something going for them and encourages them to do something with it
He also loves seeing all the other clubs and extracurriculars too and is so supportive.
Cheer and dance team going to a competition? Knock 'em dead!
Theatre doing a production? He's buying a ticket and encourages his students and players to go if they can.
Speech and Debate off to a tournament? The other schools have no idea what's coming.
He's sending his love to all of them

Monster au but mini Yuu accidentally picks up a cuss word and hilarity ensues
Tumblr media
Hoo boy, this can either be like that “gasp!” meme or Yuu just so happens to be nearby when someone oh so casually bellows out a curse word after getting their tail stomped on. Either way, it’s bound to be chaos for sure! XD
Warning: Mini!Yuu drops the f-word and the first years hear boss music 😂
The first ones who heard mini!Yuu curse was—no surprise—the first years. As soon as they heard what clearly sounded like the word “dammit”, they immediately began to panic as they tried to figure out how the toddler picked up that word.
Cue flashbacks:
Ace got collared by Riddle again for breaking a rule, the lock getting caught on something and causing him to get stuck in an awkward position. He cursed.
Deuce turning too fast and slamming his haunch against a cabinet, knocking it over and spilling all the contents on the floor. He cursed.
Jack getting trapped in a hole Ruggie dug up for Leona and spilling his books everywhere. He cursed.
Epel trying to pluck out his eyebrows under Vil’s guidance before trying the wax. He cursed (loudly) and got scolded by the unicorn.
Sebek after a student ran into him and destroyed the gift he had bought for Malleus. Cursed up a royal storm!
With growing dread, each of the freshmen realized that Yuu had been present each time they’d said the word. Now it was a race against time to get Yuu to never say it again before returning them to the professors for the evening. How were they going to do that? Simple:
By recreating the situations that caused them to curse in the first place!
“…this isn’t going to work,” Jack said with a frown.
“You got any better ideas?” Ace asked.
“Why don’t we just explain to them that it’s a bad word and they shouldn’t say it?” Jack pressed.
Despite his best efforts, the others went ahead with the plan and he reluctantly followed suit.
Cater and Trey were confused when they witnessed Ace break several rules in a row, and the moment Riddle collared him he ran off. They later found him getting the collar stuck on something, his rabbit legs scrabbling at the ground as he tried to free himself while Yuu was sitting nearby. Growing frustrated, he opened his mouth to shout, “Daaa-!!...da-da-daaaa-da-da-daa~!” Somehow, he managed to roll into a sing-song voice, a strained smile on his face while Yuu watched him in confusion.
They were even more confused when Deuce seemingly knocked over another cabinet on purpose, saying loudly, “Daaaa…rn it, what a mess! I better clean it up!...gh! Wait! Yuu, no! Stay there, don’t move! There’s glass fragments on the ground!”
Trey and Cater looked at each other in confusion. What was going on with these two?
/
“…ah…Jack? What’re you doin’ down there?” Ruggie asked, peering into the large hole.
“…I…fell in,” he said, clearly looking embarrassed.
“You fell in…”
“Yes…”
“Inside the hole you dug.”
“…yes…”
"...o...kay..." Glancing up, Ruggie picked up Yuu and held them close as he said, "Hey, lil' bugaboo. You watching your big brother acting weird today?"
"Heehee...JackJack is so funny!" Yuu said, the toddler smiling happily.
"Well, let's get you a lil' snack then!"
"Yay~!"
Jack heaved a heavy sigh, uttering, "I told them this wasn't a good idea..."
/
"...Epel...what in the world are you doing?"
"...um...maintaining my beauty regiment?"
Vil and Rook glanced at each other with raised eyebrows before staring at Epel, who had a few strips of cloth sticking to his eyebrows. Then, Vil said, "And you're waxing your eyebrows...again...when we did it just the other day...why?"
With a cute smile, Epel said, "Because I...noticed a few hairs still there! So I wanted to make sure I got them all."
"Then why not use a pair of tweezers?"
"...efficiency?"
"And Yuu is here...why exactly?"
"...uh...teaching them good habits?"
Vil's gaze turned stern, Epel's ears lowering as he tried to maintain his now wavering smile while Yuu looked between the two. Their eyes then turned to focus on the cloth on Epel's forehead, and--remembering what Rook told them about being quick when it comes to hunting--their tiny hand reached up, grabbed the tape, and--
"YEEEEOW!!!!!" Epel shrieked. "DAAAAA--hat's okay! I needed that. Thank you, Yuu~!"
While Yuu giggled happily, Vil and Rook were sharing a confused look with one another.
/
"Okay, what's going on here?"
"Um...what are you talking about?"
"Don't lie to me, Ace. You five have been acting strange all day."
"I don't know what you're talking about, right guys?"
The first years were smiling nervously as their seniors stared them down, several with their arms crossed over their chests while others looked curious or quietly furious. It was Lilia who spoke as he said, "Oh come now, you truely didn't think we wouldn't notice unusual behavior from the very students in our dorms? After all, it's not every day that Sebek sings 'dashing through the snow' instead of bellowing when angry."
Sebek's face flushed as the other freshmen stared at him.
"Just spill it: what's got you guys freaking out so much?" Ruggie asked.
No one wanted to answer, each one mumbling under their breath and avoiding everyone's gaze. Then, Yuu toddled over to Ruggie and said, "Dannut!" while reaching up to him, the first years gasping in horror.
"I-It's not what it looks like!" Epel tried to say.
"It was Deuce's fault!" Ace shouted.
"My fault?! You said it in front of them too!"
"Don't go throwing blame around, Ace!"
"As if you're one to talk, Jack! You cursed too!"
"It was an accident!" Epel said frantically. "We've been trying all day to get them to not say that word--honest!"
"I'm ashamed! My pride has corrupted the small human's innocence! Forgive me!"
Among the ruckus of the first years, they were eventually silenced by a stern look from Vil and Lilia, heads bowed in shame. Then...Ruggie pulled out a doughnut from the box he'd been carrying and held it up to Yuu. "This whatcha want, bugaboo?" he asked.
"Dannut! Dannut!" Yuu said, a beaming grin on their face as they reached up with grabby hands.
"Well first, ya gotta say it right: it's donut," he told them, kneeling down so he was eye to eye with them. "Can you say 'donut'?"
"Doh...nut...donut!" Yuu said.
"Shishishishi~! There we go! You've earned it, kiddo," Ruggie said, snickering as Yuu took the pastry and toddled off with their prize. Standing up, he said, "Let me guess: you guys thought that Yuu was saying the word 'dammit' and thought to try and teach them a different word, right?"
"Uh...y-yeah," Deuce uttered. "How did you...know that it wasn't a curse word they'd said?"
"Oh please, it was easy to tell what they wanted. You just gotta pay attention to what the kid says and narrow it down. Compared to talking to animals, it's a piece of cake!"
On hearing this, the first years heaved a sigh of relief. "Don't think you're out of the woods yet," Trey said, his smile--though playful--holding a dangerous look as he stared at them. "You all are going to watch what you say around Yuu from now on...right?"
They gulped, none of them liking the looks their respective dorm and vice dorm leaders were giving them. "Y...yes sir..."
Meanwhile, Yuu was happily skipping around with their donut half-finished--before they tripped and fell, dropping their donut. Their little face contorted into a look of anger and frustration as--in the loudest voice they could--they shouted, "Fuck!"
Multiple pairs of eyes went wide, and in an instant all five of the freshmen could swear they heard boss music playing as the others stared at them intently. Then, pointing at each other, they shouted, "He said it!!!!"

Smth happened with the Hugo awards last year? Never follow it, don't care only thought AO3 being in it was funny for the meme. While at it: Does winning a Hugo even do anything for the winner? Never bought a Hugo book. Don't even think I've seen it advertised in bookstores. Anyway, fucking fishy what went on, and kinda funky seeing the ship burn. Probs not gonna change anything tho.
--
The Hugos have frequent drama.
The main reason this particular round is an issue is that it calls into question whether Worldcon should be held in China at all. On the one hand, this clearly fucked up a round of the awards. On the other, trying to make a major sff thing stick to only certain countries is pretty xenophobic.
Other rounds have usually been more about community in-fighting and gatekeeping and were often much funnier, especially when Chuck Tingle was involved.
I generally regard the Hugos as an annoying relic of a part of publishing I don't care much about, but yes, winning one does often lead to more sales and have an actual impact on an author's career. The newer and less successful the author, the bigger the impact.
For people into traditional sff publishing, they're a big deal.

i just read a little life and here's a messy review of the book by saying my opinion on people's takes on it
[THERE WILL BE SPOILERS] also dont expect this to be professional etc
i want to start off by saying that this book is like willem's movie "life after death"; either people absolutely loved it or people hated it. and i fucking love this. would i be rereading it? probably not. but would i think of jude for the rest of my days? yes.
the thing i keep reading about from the people who didnt like it is that a) it's a trauma porn, b.) it's lengthy with various of unnecessary parts, and c.) its just a sad book with a sad ending.
something that i dont really understand is people's need and urge and want to always, always read a book expecting a happy ending. ("and books lied, they made things prettier"). spoiler alert: life isnt like that! its ugly and u cant always run away from its ugliness, no matter how hard you try. no matter how hard jude tried. and i always had this hunch, when i was first reading it, that it wont end the way i'll like it, but still i hope and hope and hoped for jude and for all of them, and thats just the Human part of me. my in denial.
as someone who struggled from mental health, i actually guiltily thought in the middle of the book, "why hasnt he k!lled himself yet?" even before jude's attempt. i cant handle the thought of putting myself in his situation and pushing through, and that's the reality as well. you thought about it and yet , complying to it somehow makes you think that the hyenas won. that brother luke won, that dr traylor won. and the thing about jude is he always try. he tried to get through life, he tried to accept romance in his life, he tried and he tries to accept everyone's devotion and help because even though he feels like he doesn't deserve it; he feels like he owes them that at least. to try.
i can see how people, especially the first ones when it just came out, may be put off by the tones and the topics of this book, but as years went by and it grows in popularity, the trigger warnings had been set. one thing ive set my mind to when i bought the book is the advice i was given: to only read it when im in a stable stage of my life, and that's why it took me almost a year before i started reading it after buying it. the triggers are listed for anyone to see. YES. those things do happen in real life. those things, esp the rape and physical mental and verbal abuse DO come in hand majority of the time. the book is not trauma dumping or a trauma porn: it simply tells. (imo, its on YOU if u think this is a trauma porn. imo, it says a lot about you as a person).
the book is lengthy because it is intended to be, the "unnecessary parts" are not just fillers but a stepping stone to unraveling jude's past, to fully grasp the situation. they are there for a reason. you can skim through the book if you want to avoid them: but believe me when i say you wont fully get the book if you do. the book is not meant to be enjoyed. its meant to tell a story, to make you feel things for the characters, may it be pity or joy or anger.
jude is not meant to be understood or to help or to be pitied at, hes meant to exist. and those things are something that was given to him willingly by the people he loved. and the characters are all flawed. andy is a bad doctor, willem is lovable and maybe had too much love, malcolm is perfect (i love him so much), jb is infuriating most of the times, harold shouldve pushed more. they all shouldve pushed more, but they cant. because the way they love is also flawed and it gets in the way, because judy is also flawed. hes stubborn and confusing. but those are traits that makes them all human.
ive reblogged this before but ill say it again: ik its a meme, but not everything can be solved through therapy. again, it took jude YEARS to finally tell willem his past– willem. willem who jude probably trust with his life, who he lets help him and seeked out for him when he was bleeding to death from cutting too much. you think jude would talk to a shrink he barely knows? someones whos literally paid to talk to him? not even jb and malcolm knew.
smth i wanna address that i rlly dont get is people who claims it's homophobic, and i really and genuinely cant see it, as a lesbian person myself. every talk about sexuality (if there even is any thats worth noting for this part), had come naturally. everyone existed how people exist with each other. even when willem and jude got together, theres barely any talk about willem's sexuality. also, hot take (/s): sexuality is confusing!! not everyone wants to label themselves. ive known multiple ppl who majorly likes girls only, but have fallen for their recent boyfriend. it happens, surprise! not everyone wants to put themselves in a box.
in conclusion: i think people expects this book to turn out for the better as a psychological response. surprise, it doesn't. my opinion? it's not meant to be enjoyed. i dont recommend this to anyone but only because it IS devastating and im a sadist if i want people to experience those feelings the book will brought. however, the characters, the delivery of the story and the pacing, and hanya's god bowing writing style are what makes this book GREAT. great ≠ happy ending, just like how sad ending ≠ bad book. thanks!

So Assassin's Creed. I have a surprisingly long story with this game. I heard about it a lot during its peak in popularity (I think back when Brotherhood was all the rage). Obviously I couldn't play the game but I kept hearing about how fun It was and most importantly how amazing the cinematics and visuals were so I was hooked by proxy. To satiate my needs I devoured the books. I read and loved all the Oliver Bowden (that I was this day old when I learned it was a nome de plum of Anton Gill, an actual historian) but fell of the wagon when the writer changed and the narrative felt weaker and weaker. However back when Origin was announced I had the pleasure to see the game presentation at Lucca Comics and I bought
A cookbook.
Yes, I own the Assassin's Creed cookbook and it is very good but beside that.
Today, 17 years after its release I booted up Assassin's Creed I.
And despite the control clunkyness, despite the much memed low profile mechanic, despite the very drawn out cinematics.
I get it.
I get it now.

Fantasy Book Review: The Tarot Sequence (Books 1-3) by K.D. Edwards
JJ’s rating: 4.5/5
How feral did it make me: 5/5
My book reviews
Okay, I read these kind of randomly, not really sure what I was getting into, and oh my god. Oh my god!! Okay, so most of the sci-fi/fantasy books I have read other than these were written by AFAB authors in their 20s and 30s. Which is great, and fine, but that’s a fairly limited perspective. These novels were written by an asexual man in his forties (sorry Keith, just sort of guessing on your age here lmao) and is it weird to say that it’s kind of refreshing to read a mlm romance actually written by a queer man? No, I don’t think so. These books, despite the dark topics they sometimes cover, feel like warm coziness to me. Reading these books feels like following along with a group of your beloved friends. God. I love them.
Summary time! In a world in which Atlantis was a secret society of demigods called the Arcana (all named after tarot cards) before being destroyed in a civil war with humanity, the remaining Atlantean society has relocated to the island formerly called Nantucket. Rune St. John is the last son of the Sun Court, the rest of the Sun Court destroyed in a mysterious attack that left Rune with emotional, mental, and physical scars. Rune and his Companion (think platonic soulmate meets bodyguard), Brand, hire out their work essentially as mercenaries to scrape by. When a son of Lady Justice goes missing, Rune and Brand are hired to find him. Also, they acquire an orphaned teenager? Are they fathers now? They might be fathers now.
These characters guys. Holy shit. They are perfect to me. K.D. Edwards was really out here like, what if I just… smash every toxically masculine stereotype out there? What if I make a snarky bodyguard character who unabashedly loves his best friend? What if these two men who have known each other all their lives are not afraid to be open about how important they are to each other and how much they genuinely LOVE each other? What if I make a romantic interest who is patient and kind and loving and not at all threatened by the relationship between his boyfriend and his boyfriend’s oldest and most important relationship? What if I create a relationship between these three men that blurs the lines between romantic and platonic?? What if I create an urban fantasy society in which queerness is normal and accepted, and where polyamory is normal and accepted? What if I make a group of characters who need a family and then FIND ONE WITH EACH OTHER???? WHAT. THEN????? (then we all cry, that’s what)
FUCK!
These books are fun, witty, full of monsters and villains, but also some of the most heartwarming characters and relationships I’ve ever read??? Like, god. These are some of the few books that I have bought both audio book and e-book copies because I could not put them down. I *had* to be reading them, if I were at home, or at work, or in the car. And as soon as I finished them, I picked up the first one and reread them.
This series is planned to be a trilogy of trilogies, with books 1-3 currently finished, and book 4 being written right now. I am so excited for more of this series, I can’t even tell you. Dear god.
There is some dark content covered in these books, specifically based around what happened to the Rune on the night when his father’s court was destroyed, so if you have any questions about trigger warnings, don’t hesitate to ask.
These books are an absolute DELIGHT. They are the queer fantasy I’ve always wanted to read, because Edwards understands that what makes the queer community special is the COMMUNITY. It’s about finding and CHOOSING your family, bitch!
Here’s a meme I made a while back to convince people to read these books (yes I spelled dinosaur wrong. oops):

17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
yes! one of my favourite books this year was The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna, which i bought last year and forgot about entirely until i was browsing a B&N specifically looking for a romance to read and came across it again. i went straight home to read it, and was blown away. it's about a woman who is a witch in a society (modern Britain) where being a witch is so dangerous that they're forbidden from being in contact with each other. she is recruited by a family who have adopted three young witches and asked to educate them. mandanna wrote it during 2020, and you can really, really tell. it's about loneliness so profound that you can't imagine any other way of being, of being offered an alternative and having to convince yourself that it's real, that you can have it. the writing was genuinely lovely and the romance is really, really good. i fell in love with everyone in it.

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Welcome to Throwback Thursday!
Many thanks to everyone that contributed to WEDNESDAY WORDS. Thanks to those that read and leave a ‘like’ or ‘love’. As you can see, some contributions really resonate with people. Yesterday’s winner was The Party Girl (again) with, “Just because I loved you at one point doesn't mean I will always love you. I’m not Whitney Houston!” Not credited to anyone, merely an internet meme classic.
On this page, ‘Throwback Thursday’ is all about memories. So, what do you remember? If I was to say the word HOME what immediately comes to mind?
‘The Wizard Of Oz’? It wouldn’t surprise me. For many of us, when we step through our front door, Judy Garland’s iconic words echo in our ear. For many of us, there is no place like home but, for some, the last place they felt ‘at home’ was in their mum and dad’s house! Me? I guess I’m just bloody lucky! Well, you knew that already! I’ve always lived in amazing homes. Not big, posh or plush homes, just lovely, homely homes. Just before The Trouble and I got our first flat, we actually lived in her parent’s house. Yes, that was ‘home’ for a while. I was not (strictly) a member of the family, I was just a guest, but her mum and dad made me feel ‘at home’. Bless them! In fact, it was a bloody weird house because The Trouble’s twin sister had her boyfriend living in her bedroom too! Nevertheless, dysfunctional as we were, we were our own mad version of The Waltons. I suppose my fondest memory of The Trouble’s mum was cornmeal porridge and thin slices of buttered white bread. Initially, it seemed like a weird combination but, when I tucked into it, it felt like the best comfort food ever! Mrs. Patterson has sadly passed now but I will always remember her for the comfort she gave me. The place I live in now? It’s a bloody mad house! The Trouble is not just a hoarder but a messy hoarder, and her son takes after her! And once The Mighty Josiah arrives for the weekend, he just adds to the mess! Me? I try to keep things neat, tidy and simple. Between you and me, this place is driving me nuts but, in its own chaotic, rundown way, it still feels like home, and I still can’t wait to come home to it.
So, on this Throwback Thursday, what kind of memories, thoughts or emotions does the word HOME conjure up for you?
Big love and many thanks to Steven George, better known to his followers as Frostie, hardworking Canvey DJ legend. Got a missive from him yesterday saying, “Just a short message to say that I finished ‘Whatever Makes Them Dance’ last night and thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.” What a top man! As soon as he reviews the book, I will post his review online. If you’re looking for an easy-peasy and very breezy light read, grab yourself a copy via Amazon and I guarantee it will make you smile. One girl bought it for her holiday and finished it before she could pack! It’s a love story about a DJ. I wrote it for people like us!
Have a throbbing and thrusting Thursday (with hopefully a few thrills through your thoroughfare?) I love you all.

went to the thrift store again! once again walked to the place. a nice driver let me cross as i was on my way to the place.. i was awkward because i didn’t realize they were stopping for me. did the raise hand thing people usually do when a car stops to be polite, still don’t know why its a hand up though. also scampered like a little chipmunk.
not much stuck out to me— got a tiny, tiny tea cup with some cute birds on it. also got a trick or treat halloween mug to feel a bit spooky.. along with a necklace! has a blue-green seahorse on it. the glasswork is truly memorable.. wearing it right now.
then crossed the street to the obligatory crystal & hemp store. took longer to cross than i’d like to admit. don’t exactly believe in crystals & chakras, but went anyway! bought two crystals (carnelian and moss agate) and an olive green star.. the star was five bucks. still, it’s very pretty. whoever tumbled these is very talented! i know its rather silly to buy something if you don’t believe in it, but i found them quite beautiful.. there were also very complex crystal displays. should’ve taken pictures..
…speaking of pictures, i took a few as i walked! saw a weird sphere out and about. also saw someones bag of sliced pepperoni on the side of the road.. made me chuckle. reminded me of that one meme my friend edited and showed me in september of misato, which only made me laugh harder. mind kept going back to that image as i walked to and from the two stores and back home.. also took pictures of some wires & electric things. didn’t pass by a radio tower, cause thats a distinct structure— very uncultured on radio & electromagnetic towers and their names.. something which ill most certainly look up now because if i don’t know what to describe what im talking about ill get aggravated. utility poles! makes sense. anyway, yes, passed by a ton of utility poles and a few rectangular circuit um.. things. took a picture of a few of them. why? they made me smile, and made the trek to the thrift store more bearable. looking out for small things which i know my friends find interest in is like playing one of those iSpy books from my childhood.. i treasure it dearly! also looked to see if there was anything my friends would like at the thrift store. there was an odd lookin clown i almost got.. alas, i did not. i have very little space for him..
also passed by a few stray bees pollenating the flowers beside the concrete sidewalks. one flew beside me, even if for only a split second. made me ask myself if i correlate anyone to bees, as its a rather common staple of my mind to correlate my friends with atleast one animal or so— realized i didn’t have anyone fit the bee agenda. as of typing this, maybe im the bee.. who knows.
…anyway, thanks for reading yet another tangent! if you have, i mean. still have a ton of things to do, but i take solace in writing about tiny things i do to then publish them on the internet.

Are you planning on writing anymore non Disney books?
Yes!
My next non-Disney book is That Devil, Ambition, and it's currently set to release in summer 2025.
Tumblr media
It's too early for a preorder link, cover, or even an official summary, but it is a pretty great book if you ask me. I have some behind-the-scenes peeks tagged on my blog for it, and it was bought at auction, fulfilling one of my author bucket-list goals. I'm planning on organizing a street team for it and everything.
here is the goodreads link
and here is a meme

Thank you for asking!
PS - and here is a playlist because why not
