A lot of discussion lately about whether or not jason fans hallucinated a character who cares about his community (the ‘protects women and kids’ thing), but i think that’s doing us a disservice and frankly letting DC off the hook.

Its not unreasonable to dislike that DC consistently makes the kid with the poorest background the most violent and selfish. (And the second poorest, Steph, the most incompetent).

Its not wild to extrapolate that someone who was first characterised as being Too Upset About Rape Victims and later characterised as prepared to take action where others won’t, could be getting involved in that kind of work.

It’s not crazy fans being blind to canon when we don’t want the sole voice of reason on the subject of community support to be the benevolent billionaire.

It’s not delusional behaviour to make fanworks where the guy heavily implied to be a child victim of sexual assault takes on responsibility for other victims.

Christ, I can’t even imagine what the takes would be if, like, “Titanic” came out today. “What did Jack do to deserve to die?” “Why was the narrative punishing Jack by making him die?” “The story is clearly problematic because Jack died instead of Cal.”

Like holy shit, sometimes characters die because it’s tragic. Because the creators are trying to make you feel something. Because fiction isn’t always about some Calvinist view of a character deserving their fate because all stories are meant to be one big religious passion play about who deserves to go to heaven and be redeemed or whatever and who we’re allowed to stone to death.

Sometimes it’s narratively unjust because you’re meant to be pained and outraged and feel a gaping hole in your heart wherein resides emotions you might never experience in day to day life because the whole point of fiction is to take you outside your everyday experience.

(And for the record, I’m sure those takes on Titanic would have existed if it corresponded with the existence of Twitter but thankfully I was blissfully unaware of all that because I was ten years old. Still. Dear lord, people.)

So one thing I’ve noticed is that people’s DnD characters may vary but there is usually an underlying thread that they all have in common. This thread is typically related to what that person struggles with the most.

For instance, my betrotheds DnD characters: a bitchy warlock we had to bust out of two different pacts, a sassy barbarian, a reformed drow cultist, and a sunshine fighter cleric.

All these characters were wildly different but at their very core struggle was them grappling with their self worth. My betrothed struggles with their worth a great deal and even with different facets showing their characters all have that too.

Mine all tend to contend with different themes of loneliness and acceptance. Surprise, surprise, the little autistic gremlin yearns to have been met with more love and lasting friendships.

So we’re at breakfast. I am meeting a new friend of my betrotheds for the first time. It’s been twenty minutes since I’ve met this man. I say my theory. He laughs. He starts to describe a few of his characters but specifies that he often has healing aspects. He gives a very broad overview of their character arcs.

I ponder for a moment then said, “Would you like to have my assessment?”

He laughed, “Sure!”

“We’ve just met. It’s gonna get real.”

“Bring it on.”

“I think your struggle is that you feel you must offer something of value or service to people to be worthy of their love.”

His jaw dropped. His fork froze midway to his mouth. A potato fell. He stared into space as this sank in. Quietly he said, “Oh.”

I wish more people were normal about POC, and specifically black, characters in the MCYT fandom. I mean, for obvious reasons related to CCs and all that, but also bc I often feel like I’m doing something wrong because sometimes I’m one of the only people I know how is getting like? We need to talk about Alastor and aroace rep.

My qualifications: I’m an aroace who also, at times, feels attraction to others. I don’t know the specific name for it, but I like to think of it as my sexuality being in fluctuation. Sometimes romantic and/or sexual attraction is there, sometimes it isn’t and I’m completely repulsed by it all.

So, Alastor is canonically Asexual (and very much implied Aromantic via the VA and Viv, let’s be honest), and it seems the majority of you have taken that as a challenge of sorts? Like you see one off limits character and feel the need to ship him with everyone under the sun.

Don’t get me wrong, as long as you can separate fanon and canon- this isn’t really about you. But I am sick and tired of people drawing Fanart or writing FanFictions and excusing themselves by saying “Aroace is a spectrum!” Or “He’s in a QPR with so and so!” (let’s be so real, half of those ships I’m seeing are not anything close to a QPR). Please just say you did it because you wanted to- don’t try and make excuses to seem like an ally to the aroace community. I’d really much rather you draw it and not justify it than scramble to seem morally right. You’re not. Let’s all move on.

I would have no problem with this if it didn’t seem like such a big thing. Alastor is the ONE character who’s shipped THE MOST with every other character in Hazbin. That’s why this whole thing seems really icky to me. We don’t have much representation in media- I could count all the ace characters I know on one hand- and the one thing we have, no one seems to have any respect for.

I’m not really mad at anyone participating, I’m honestly just disappointed in a (mostly) queer community.
