Yuuma Game

Time spent: Around 5 hours

It's a Touhou fan game I got from somewhere off Twitter. Like the series it's derived from, it's a bullet hell, but with a twist! You can EAT the bullets the enemy shoots at you, and you're able to SHOOT them back at them!

The game has you paying attention to two screens. On the left is a bullet hell where you have to both dodge and eat the enemy's bullets. On the right, the bullets you eat get stored similarly to those mobile game ads where you have to press all the blocks of the same color to clear them. It's the exact same principle as that. You click a bullet you ate to shoot it back at the enemy, and if there's multiple of the same color around it, you deal more damage.

The game is this super enjoyable mix of watching your left to make sure you're not getting hit while getting ammo, and watching your right to micromanage the blocks around to launch a powerful shot. It's a super novel concept! The bosses of the game will even sometimes throw in their own custom block that you either have to use against them, or are actively disadvantageous for you. I'm a huge sucker for divided attention setups like this one, so I was pretty quickly sold. If that sounds worrying to you, don't worry, there is a time stop mechanic in the game for when you need to stop for a second and ponder your surroundings. You can't move in that state, but you can click whatever you want on the right side and even shoot bullets while paused. I felt like it was an unnecessary feature for most of the game ... until I got to the post-game. Then I had to start using it so my ass would get kicked less.

The overworld of the game has you running around a modest map full of Touhou characters to fight. Don't worry, you don't need to know anything about the series to play. The dialogue between the characters is mostly just a lot of swearing, anyway (nothing serious, just the fuck word and the shit word and the like). The humor of it does eventually wear off, but the game still lands some decent jokes from time to time, it's just that it sometimes feels like it's trying a bit hard to be funny.

The overworld also contain little puzzles and obstacles to get through that remind me of Undertale. I don't know if that's a good comparison or if my naivete is showing. It also has the option to level up your stats, which I think is a neat addition. Feels like there's more progression.

Overall, pretty decent game! Again, super love the main gimmick, and would definitely play a sequel for it. The dialogue is a bit weak, and the game has a few pretty rough difficulty spikes, and it can take a bit to get the hang of the game, but overall? Pretty solid, can recommend. i think in general zanmu quietly ended up being my favorite character in udoalg. reimu but fucked up. touhou's first actual corrupt monk (rather than byakuren who is basically heretical in the same way jesus was heretical and a little bit of an idiot.) chatgpt wearing shorts. the way she's so chill about everything.

❤️ What is one of your OC's best memories?

So there was this one time where Nosaka took the kids to the library to check out some books and while Nosaka was distracted with getting several picture books off one of the higher shelves for Mitsuka, Ikuto wandered off towards one of the children's computers that just so happened to be on the other side of the wall directly behind the one Nosaka and their siblings were at. The computer was normally occupied every time they came to the library but by some miracle, it was open that day! Seeing this as their one and only opportunity to play on it, Ikuto booted it up right away to play whatever games had been pre-installed on it for as long as they pleased! Which would turn out to be a good 15 minutes before Shinzo came rushing over, asking if he could have a chance to play as well, followed by a slightly distressed looking Nosaka and Mitsuka.

((For slightly better context, the computer came with a pair of children sized headphones that pretty much canceled out any noise around them. So while Ikuto was happily playing games with character from popular children shows, Nosaka, Mitsuka, and Shinzo were searching all over for him ksjhuohgsvb)).

🧊 Is their current design their first one?

Yup! Or mostly yes - Here's the first ever sketch of him too!

((As you can probably tell, Shinzo is the only of the Nosaichi kids who actually changed... Like three times before we got the one we know of today))

🎯 What do they do best?

Ikuto's pretty fond of playing video games - More specifically rhythm based games! They aren't like a master at them, but just give him an hour and you can bet you'll be seeing Ikuto's hitting all kinds of combos without missing a single beat!

I love how the plot of 17.5 is absolutely something that would happen in a fanfic but in the BEST way possible.

An ancient eastern creature with the power to absorb anything is beaten only by an equally ancient western creature with the power to destroy anything who also happens to be a fan favorite people have been obsessed with for years. An infinite power versus infinite power situation, Kirby vs Flandre, it's almost TOO cool for a fanfic, yet it happened in canon!

Tulip ; Which one gives the most gifts? Do they know the other well enough to give them something they'd like?

ĪRinka is usually the one who gives the gifts. Since the beginning of the relationship, she has difficulty expressing her love verbally or with physical gestures, such as kisses and hugs, so she shows her feelings with other love languages, including giving gifts. She makes an effort to notice something he likes or wants so she can gift Yuuma. At first, he was a little embarrassed when she handed him the gifts, but after a while he got used to it and started appreciating each gift and guarding them very carefully.

They both know each other well enough to know what the other would like to receive, but Yuuma is much better than Rinka in this regard, he always finds a way to pick out exactly what she wants or needs.

Cherry Blossom ; Who takes the longest to get ready for a date?

Both are very handsome and can dress well without effort, and neither of them is particularly concerned about their own appearance, but it's usually Rinka, mainly because she likes to wear well-defined curls and wants to look pretty in a way that doesn't draw attention. Although Yuuma cares less about his appearance, he dresses up much more than usual because:

1- He likes to feel well dressed, because he knows that when one feels good about himself, things improve. 2- In his words, he has to be well dressed to be able to go out with a person as beautiful as Rinka (her face turned red for a long time after that). 3- He doesn't want people to judge or talk bad about Rinka for dating someone poor, because it has happened before that he or even Maehara and Kataoka were discriminated because of that and he would hate for that to happen to another person important to him.

Various picrews of my new Diabolik Lovers OC Amoretta. I've more or less got her appearance down pat, I want her to be short and curvy, but I'm currently working on developing her character and personality. I'm trying to think of traits associated with the color pastel pink. While she has some traits in common with Yui (in a lot of ways Yui is my spirit animal, I love her to bits), such as being sweet and shy, I want to have Amoretta be her own person. A story starring her, as well as others, is in the works. I'm officially in diahell and I love it.

17. Your favorite character to write this year?

I don't remember if I actually worked on "I Will Go With You" this year. If I did, my answer is Kyan Reki from SK8 The Infinity. If not, the answer is Isogai Yuuma, no doubt. For both it's the same reason. I really feel like I connect with them emotionally. The version of them that is in my head is one I can really relate to in many ways.

18. The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?

Korosensei. I mean, some idiot thought it was a really good idea to write a story in his POV for some reason. I don't regret it now, but while writing "Just The Way You Are" I really regretted that choice. It's my own bad luck for being stubborn. I am still worried that someone will come along and tear that work to shreds because I didn't do a good enough job writing him.

28. Favorite work you wrote this year?

There are many good ones to choose from, actually. "Hell on Record" was really fun to write because I was free to put in as much lore as I wanted. I like how the end of "Escaping" turned out. "Nightmares" felt good to write for several reasons. I enjoyed writing "Maehara's Christmas Trilogy" too, and I look forward to editing and posting it. But I think my absolute favorite would probably have to be "Knights and Princesses". I can't believe the story it's supposed to be connected to is not up yet! I enjoyed writing it and I enjoy reading it. I was honestly a bit surprised that "Kings of the Climbing Frame" got more response, but I guess that's because it had some art to go along with it.

Thank you so much for the ask Tuuli! This was just what I needed to take a break. I'll see if I can get some more work done.
