Year of the Witch
Temperance Alden 4/5 Published in 2020
Tumblr media
As someone who is pretty new to her Practice, I am very happy to have found this book. Going into my practice I was always informed about the 8 Wiccan Sabbats and that most everyone observed them. Not that I really knew if everyone did, but it was a widespread piece of information that, when you are first entering into the craft, you believe. Temperance Alden did a wonderful job of changing my mind on the Sabbats in the best way. She helped me to realize that I don’t actually need to practice the Sabbats if I don’t find myself attached to them. Not only does The Year of the Witch address that you do not need to celebrate only the Wiccan Sabbats, but it gives you insight on how to adapt the Wheel of the Year to your practice and make it work for you. There are my positives, there are a few negatives that I need to give as well. Yes, she helped me realize that I did not need to only practice the 8 Wiccan Sabbats, however, I am sure that other books say the same thing. The way it is written was a bit confusing for me. There is a lot of information but at the same time, everything is glossed over. Now that could be put down to just wanting to give an overview of different topics that can help one to form their own Wheel of the Year, but in some places, there was just not enough information to make it make sense. Following my point above nearly half of the book, 40% is about the 8 Wiccan Sabbats. I went into this book thinking that it was supposed to take us away from those Sabbats and the ways we can make our own Wheel. While it did this, it seems a bit redundant to make nearly half the book about the Sabbats themselves. Now I understand that she does celebrate 6/8 of the Sabbats herself, however, she states at the beginning of the book, “My goal with this book is to give you what you’ll need to create your own personalized wheel of the year. In the following pages, we will explore the basic concepts of intuitively guided witchcraft, its role in the wheel of the year, the traditional wheel of the year, climate change, and more.” Yes, she states that she will be discussing the Wiccan Wheel, however, I see no point in dedicating such a large chunk of her book to correspondences and history lessons about the 8 Sabbats that we can find elsewhere. The other information given is in such short bursts that it is hard to gather any information out of them. There are a few points that she addresses that are longer and do delve deeper but they are far and few in between and do not reach the depth of time that she put into the 8 Wiccan Sabbats. Overall I the book fell short of my expectations. I am also unable to recommend this to a true beginner witch, as it would be easier for you to understand it with prior knowledge of the Wheel of the Year. Do I recommend it though, yes just be sure to gain insight on the Wheel of the Year before reading it.

GTKMaMC Day 1 - Divination
GTKMaMC means Getting To Know Me and My Craft, this is a series of posts that I am doing that I will end up repeating in about a year or so to see just how far I have come in my Craft.
Divination
Divination is what originally drew me into my craft. I started using divination, specifically Oracle cards, about six years ago. I had always been drawn to them and the idea behind them as I have always been a rather intuitive person. I use a few different forms of divination and I am working on learning a few more. I work with Tarot, Oracle and Lenormand. I am working on learning Runes and how to use a Pendulum properly. Other forms that I feel drawn to and wish to work with are Bibliomancy and Scrying.
Oracle
Tumblr media
Oracle is the first type of divination that I learned. I was about 14 when my mother bought me a book with two small oracle decks in it. She found it at Walmart. When I came over to her and saw it I was immediately drawn to it and she noticed this. So she bought it, she didn’t have much money but she still got me started on my journey. The decks are Celtic Animals and Celtic Trees. I adore them still to this day. I read Oracle cards without using any spreads, unlike the way I read Tarot. I find that I connect to the cards better when I read without a spread, I read them as they fall, with my energy telling me when to stop pulling them. I tend to notice that I pull in numbers divisible by 3. Though I do not use Oracle as much as I used to, I still rely on it quite a lot and i will always rely on it.
Tarot
Tumblr media
Tarot is the second form of divination that I learned. I found myself getting into it the more I worked with Oracle, I delved into Tarot about a year or so after my beginnings with Oracle. My first deck was the Tarot Illuminati. I still find myself connected very strongly with this deck and it is one of my favorites to read for myself with. I do have a number of other decks that I use as well. As I began working with Tarot I noticed that my decks tend to choose a few types of readings they favor. I have one deck that adores working with romantic energies and another that strongly calls to me when I am in need of quick and precise answers.
Lenormand
Tumblr media
I do not have the most experience with Lenormand yet. I never knew that it existed until I bought a deck combo pack with Tarot, Oracle, and Lenormand. When I got the cars and began looking into how they work I found that I enjoy reading with them a lot. They still confuse me a bit, like I said, I am still inexperienced a bit with them, but I have the basics down. I only have one deck of Lenormand cards right now, I am interested in making my own set as I haven’t found any other decks that call to me yet.
Runes
Tumblr media
I am not sure when it happened, but one day my heart just yelled at me to try divining with Runes, so what did I do? I made a set and began working with them. I adore them so far, I just began working with them about two weeks ago, but they are amazing so far. The set I made is made of wood, but I would like to make a set out of stone and possible seashells as I have always loved shells.
Pendulums
Tumblr media
I love the idea of Pendulums, I think they are absolutely wonderful. I do not own one, so I made one using a ring and a chain from a necklace. I have yet to start working with it, but have plans to soon. I think this is one of the forms that I am most eager to work with because I can wear it and take it with me should I need to ask a question on the go. I don’t carry around a purse or bag and really don’t like to, so taking cards or Runes with me is not feasible. A pendulum seems like a wonderful solution.
Bibliomancy
Tumblr media
This is another form of Divination that I never knew existed until I began my path of Witchcraft. I have always loved books and reading, I own quite a number. I am working on making a book specifically for Bibliomancy, one that is unique to me with quotes and passages from other books and people. I am excited to get this book to a point where I can begin using it, until then I am going to be working with a book that I haven’t decided on yet, that has a number of poems from different authors and time periods.
Scrying
Tumblr media
Scrying is something that I have known about, but never thought I would try until recently. I wish to get a crystal ball to work with, but until then I am planning on using water and fire, as well as a mirror. I am hesitant to begin working with this method until I get further on my path and am able to focus my energies better.
Closing
I, obviously, believe in divination, though I know a number of people do not, my boyfriend included. I have had so many experiences with divination working that I can not not believe in it. When I first began using it I was a bit skeptical, because I was always told that these types of things do not work. I have learned from that. I believe that those people helped me on my way to where I am now. They helped me realize that I have my own beliefs and they are valid, divination was the first step for me and one that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

REBLOG IF YOU SUPPORT TRANS WITCHES.
I saw some posts and accounts that really bummed me out tonight. Some people are so proud to be transphobic and it’s disgusting. I’m terrified that I accidentally follow some TERFS without realizing it.
Show trans people some love in the midst of all of this hate that is still going around.

A Pause
My last post was three days ago about dreams in my craft. In this post I mentioned my grandmother and how she was in the ICU. This same grandmother is now dying due to kidney failure. Please do not worry she is at peace with this and I am as well. That being said I am going to be taking a few days to be with her and get adjusted to all this information before I continue this self imposed 30 day challenge. Thank you for you understanding.

GTKMaMC Day 8 - Dreams
GTKMaMC means Getting To Know Me and My Craft, this is a series of posts that I am doing that I will end up repeating in about a year or so to see just how far I have come in my Craft.
-----------------------
Since I was a child I have had dreams of the future. They are not always 100% clear at the moment though they eventually show what they meant. I always thought that I was imagining things until one day when I was 17. I was staying with my mother for the weekend when I had the only, what I would call, nightmare I have ever had that made me need to go to my mother. The energy in my room when I woke up was terrifying and heavy. In the dream my grandmother was there and she was just standing there smiling at me, the rest of the world was dark and rainy. I was terrified for a reason that was unknown to me, I was just so scarred. It actually woke me up. I was scared that something was going to happen to my grandmother. A few weeks later and my grandmother ended up in the ICU for a week and a half. It was because of this incident that I began to listen to my dreams and write them down so that I am able to remember them better. In the months following this dream my life began to spiral out of fear that I had. Now that I have gone through this time I have learned how to use my dreams and not be afraid of them no matter how scary they may be, they are warning for me to be aware of what is to come and it is something that I have actually began to treasure.
Now that I pay attention to my dreams better I have found myself to be having more dreams of this type. I hope to work on this skill and develop it as I go on in my path as a way to help connect myself to the universe as well as myself better.

GTKMaMC Day 7 - Meditation
GTKMaMC means Getting To Know Me and My Craft, this is a series of posts that I am doing that I will end up repeating in about a year or so to see just how far I have come in my Craft.
---------------
I have tried to meditate before when I was in my teens as a way to help me to get through school and my anxieties, but I was not able to actually do it. I believe I was doing it wrong at first. I always tried not to think about anything, which caused me to think of everything that I possible could. Not something that you want to happen when you are trying to clear your mind. Now that I am doing it more often and actively making time for it I have noticed that I am able to do it better and easier, I feel that this is because I am doing it for something that matters more to me than just trying to calm myself for school.
Now that I am meditating on the daily I am noticing myself being calmer and more focused, I did have two days where I did not meditate and I found that my entire day was different in the way that I did not find myself to be able to focus as clearly on the things that I needed to.

GTkMaMC Day 6- Grimoire or Book of Shadows?
GTKMaMC means Getting To Know Me and My Craft, this is a series of posts that I am doing that I will end up repeating in about a year or so to see just how far I have come in my Craft.
Both
When I first started I didn’t know that there was a difference between the two. I guess some people may not see a difference either. A Grimoire holds strict information and a Book of Shadows is more like a diary or a journal of ones path. I have found myself combining the two of them into one book. It may be because I don’t like having too many books with the small amount of space that I have, but I have also found that I like keeping all of my information together in one place so that I do not need to pull out a few to cross reference and look at. This is something that I ay end up doing differently as I go forward on my path, but right now I combine them together.

GTKMaMC Day 5 - Altars
GTKMaMC means Getting To Know Me and My Craft, this is a series of posts that I am doing that I will end up repeating in about a year or so to see just how far I have come in my Craft.
Do I Have One?
Right now I am in a space that is fat too small for me to have a full altar set up. I do have a table that I use when I do spell and things that I turn into a tear down altar. For know I find this to be a wonderful alternative to having permanent one.
My Plans For The Future
I have a very beautiful cedar chest that I plan on using as a place to store my things as well as using as a tear down altar and hopefully I can find a nice table to turn into a permanent one, or perhaps a shelf as I do have cats that like to get into some trouble.
My Thoughts on Them
I love altars. Absolutely adore them. all of the ones that I’ve seen have been beautifully decorated and dedicated. I am a very creative person and I feel like an altar will add another way for me to bring my creativity into my craft and take that part of me and use it to help dedicate my craft as well.

GTKMaMC Day 4 - Covens
GTKMaMC means Getting To Know Me and My Craft, this is a series of posts that I am doing that I will end up repeating in about a year or so to see just how far I have come in my Craft.
Solitary Practice
I am a solitary practitioner as of right now. I find that at this point in my life this is the best thing for me as I struggle with social anxiety and general anxiety. I have never done well in groups of people. I always feel as though I am not welcome, in the wrong and so many other felling and thoughts cross my mind it is hard for me to focus. Not only do I have anxiety but because of it I can not drive. This means that I would need to find a group of people that meet where I could walk to. In the town that I live in that does not seem very likely. All in all my circumstances at the moment allow me and limit me to working as a solitary witch, something that I really do not mind and actually enjoy.
Eventually?
Will I eventually join a coven? Possibly. If I were to ever get to that point I would need a decent amount of time and preparation until I reach it. I believe that if I were to want to work in a coven be it in person or try and online one I need to get to a point in my life and with myself that I am able to love myself and open myself up to other people.

GTKMaMC Day 3 - Deities?
I am a ware that it has been a bit since I posted number two, however my boyfriend recently got back to work so my schedule has been crazy along with me dealing with a stomach bug.
GTKMaMC means Getting To Know Me and My Craft, this is a series of posts that I am doing that I will end up repeating in about a year or so to see just how far I have come in my Craft.
Not Yet
I am aware that there is a large number of witches that worship and work with deities in their practices. I honestly have no clue if I am ever going to work with them outside of small things to honor them. Throughout these past few months or so I have seen and read a lot about how time consuming it is to work with them, not to mention the shear amount of respect that goes into this part of a practice. I am at the point where I feel that if I am ever going to work with them it is not going to be for a few years. I do not want to jump into something as large and as delicate as working with deities without more knowledge and know how on the subject. I refuse to jump into this type of work with my current living situation and without having a set schedule for myself to follow so that I know exactly when and where I can make time for them and work with them respectfully and without rushing.

GTKMaMC Day 2 - Magick
GTKMaMC means Getting To Know Me and My Craft, this is a series of posts that I am doing that I will end up repeating in about a year or so to see just how far I have come in my Craft.
Magick not Magic
I feel there is a difference between magic and magick. Magic being the type of magic you see in movies and on tv as well as the little tricks illusionists do. This type of magic is not ‘real’ in the sense that magick is real. Magick to me is what we witches do, it is our craft it is our intentions, this magick is what flows around us. In short magic = supernatural or fake, magick = natural or real.
What is Magick really?
This is something that I have been thinking about since I began my journey and to me Magick is my intentions, my energies in combination with the worlds energies and the energies of others. It is the thing that connects all things living and not. It is what links everyone together.
How does it work?
Magick works as I know it right now at the beginning of my journey as a force to strengthen ones will. It boosts one intentions and leads one to what they need.
Is it powerful? How powerful?
Right now I believe that magick holds as much power as you let it. If you do not believe in it then it will not work, if you do not help it then it will not work. You are the power source, if you give it power than it is powerful.

🍊 𝑪𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝒑𝒆𝒆𝒍 🍊
Tumblr media
Despite how much I wrote for the steps, this is a very simple recipe!!      You can use your orange candy for edible spells, gifts, offerings, or to add into other recipes. I will later make a post detailing how to properly make chocolate bars with it, if it’s up it’ll be linked [here].
🍊 𝑰𝒏𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔: 🍊
2 large Oranges  - ✧  Good fortune, luck, divination ✧
1 cup of sugar  - ✧ Sweetness ✧
~½ cup of sugar to coat the peels, this is up to taste.
Water
🍊 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒑𝒔: 🍊
First, wash and peel the orange. For that, slice away the top and bottom of the orange, then make a strip down the middle: you will get a long rectangle type deal! If you want to to reduce bitterness, you can scrape away the white part (this is optional, though). Then, cut the oranges into thin vertical strips, around ¼ inch or 1cm thick.
Boil the peels in water for 15 minutes, then rinse them with fresh water and repeat.
Add the cup of sugar and then fresh water to a pot then bring it to a boil, until sugar is dissolved. At that point, add your peels, reduce heat, and simmer for 20/25 minutes. Be sure to stir every once in a while!
Remove bit by bit, letting the excess syrup slide off the peels. And don’t throw away the syrup!! You can use it as a sweetener for stuff, just like honey. Delicious.
Coat the peels with sugar. Then, spread them on a wire rack and let dry 8-24 hours (one day is best) And bam! They’re ready!!
Put them in a ziplock bag and you can keep them in the fridge for a month or freeze them to conserve them for longer!
