welcome to my little studyblr / dark chaotic academia life. 18 - german - currently finishing public school with the Abitur - nonbinary - wants to study something like biochemistry or just chemistry
I started this studyblr because - apart from loving sciences and learning - I didn’t see many things on the popular studyposts about studying with mental illnesses. I have depression, probably for 5 years by now, and I’m still trying to get better and get a grip on realising goals like studying at a university despite my illness. I have had a bad depressive episode, chronic stress and a final breakdown just days before my exam period started in the middle of april, and as a final straw i took the first week off, tried my best to recover some of my sanity and still finish school, so that at that point I can actually take months off without having to worry about not finishing. I have to retake the two exams I missed though, and my last exam is on wednesday. I had some pictures I wanted to post and just general study progress, but here we are:
i am under immense stress again, and i will do my best to work through this, but that means taking tomorrow off, writing my exam and talking to friends and family again (as i have my birthday this week but its kinda too much right now). I am trying to learn how to cope with stress and work on strategies to study with taking the depression into consideration. I will go offline for two days and hopefully, when I come back from my small isolation, I can share stuff with people that also try to study with mental illnesses.
For now, keep trying; the sun will rise and we will try again

the future freaks me out but this seems like solid good advice
I see a lot of people who tell young people–especially young people who are heading into college–that they should “do what they love.” And they’re right. You should do what you love.
But there’s a world of difference between doing what you love for you, and doing what you love for a paycheck.
I went to undergrad for graphic design and 3-D design–art and more art, I usually say–and I loved it. You know what I didn’t love? Trying to collect my fees from clients. Trying to meet unrealistic, over-simplified or over-specific briefs from people who didn’t know what they were talking about. Coming home, having worked creatively all day, with no creative juice left for the things I wanted to do.
You know what I would tell you instead? Do something that you can be interested in, with people you like.
You don’t have to love it. Loving your work can be a lot, and it often means you have to live in your job 24/7. Some people can do that. Not everyone can, or should. But if you can find work that’s interesting enough that it doesn’t feel tedious, and people you can enjoy spending your 9-5 with, and you can make money, that’s great! It means you can do the things you love for you.
I’m in law school now. It’s interesting work, and difficult, and I like doing it. I like how complicated it gets, and I like the stories it tells. But I don’t come home and read law journals for fun. I come home, and I sculpt, and I draw, and I paint, and I read. I do these things for me.
Some tips/ideas for things that I do to ground myself when I feel anxious or distracted:
Make tea or coffee. I especially love looseleaf tea or pourover coffee for this.
Touch something real and solid, like a book or a tree or a flower.
Drink water, or the hot tea or coffee you made!
Write down a list of things that you love, or just make life worth it.
Take a nap.
Create something! It can be anything—a painting, write a story, make jewelry, a collage, etc.—as long as you made it.
Listen to a song to which you know all the lyrics, and sing along.
Go for a walk.
Play with a pet.
Light a candle.
Talk to yourself, or build an imaginary world.
Exercise!
Plan a trip to somewhere you've always wanted to go, even if you can't really go at the moment.
Do something adventurous, like go hiking, trespass somewhere (just don't get caught!), get on a roof, climb an electrical tower, go cliff jumping, run through a field, whatever!
Please add to this if you have any ideas! I'd love to hear them!
looking forward to this once my exam period is over at the end of may, but also great break ideas inbetween study sessions or general life
dark academia - self care edition
i’m on a school break this week and i’ve been trying to find ways to rest/recharge while i have the time, so here’s a list of some academia-themed self care ideas <3
brew a cup of your favorite tea and look out the window for a bit
cut up some fruit to eat and arrange it nicely on a plate
reread an old favorite book - or just your favorite chapters
bake something or make a nice dinner for yourself
lie on the floor for and listen to music
watch a documentary about something you find interesting, even if it’s one you’ve seen before
put on classical music and take a long bath/shower
make origami with book pages
read some poetry, or write some of your own
light a candle and watch the flame
if you’re religious or spiritual, spend some extra time on your prayers/meditation
buy flowers for yourself (optional: press them between heavy books so you can keep them forever)
tidy your desk
go outside barefoot and stand in the grass until you feel just a little bit cold, then wrap yourself in a blanket to warm up
write yourself a love letter and seal it with wax
as lovely as it is, learning can be quite rigorous and it’s important to avoid burnout. take some time and do something kind for yourself - you deserve it! i love you all and i hope you do something beautiful today <3
a while back i read a post along the lines of “if you feel like everyone hates you, it’s time to rest… if you feel like you hate everyone else, it’s time to eat” and honest to god i’ve never used any piece of advice more than i have that one
The weather is changing quickly, and I've been trying to study chemistry the past 3 days, though i haven't achieved much yet. It's so weird to study the topics i've already written exams about the past two years but now we're expected to do it all over again. I get bored so quickly because I already understand it and because we have worked on it again and again.
I love rain and storms, they're perfect study weather.
When Homer said, "Everything is more beautiful because we are doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again." I felt that.
Had my philosophy exam yesterday so 3/4 exams are done :3 so relieved. My bday present arrived early, now I get what all that hype is about. Only 20 pages in but its so good already. Prepare for some fanart if it turns out well and chemistry studying in the next few days too
I have my next exam on tuesday so it's time to study three semesters of philosophy class :) at least its not actually much, one semester only took 2 hours to review. This was yesterday, and i'll review the other two semesters today.
we’ve all been in this situation for different reasons, anxiety, procrastination, work, way too many assignments in a week. but fear not my friends, hopefully, this masterpost will help you get A’s and organize your study schedule.
also please only do this every time you need to study for a test, cramming is not good for learning and pulling all-nighters frequently isn’t healthy.

Love this, I'm 18 turning 19 soon so we'll see but hopefully I'm headed in a similar direction.
(05.06.2021) || I just finished and submitted my last assignment for my first year of grad school. I also realized that it has been over six years since I started this blog to document my education journey. I was 19 when I began this blog, it feels strange to look back at who I was then and who I am now. I don’t think 19 year old me ever believed she’d be happy and content living at her parents house as an adult. I definitely don’t think 19 year old me could have ever imagined that she’d be pursuing a masters degree while doing biomedical engineering research. Take some time today to be proud of where you are, appreciate where you came from, and get excited about where you’re headed.
here is your reminder to take care of yourself and to keep up with your hobbies and things that bring you joy, instead of risking your (mental) health for studying and school.
