Draupadi from MahaBharat (2)
2nd attempt to make a depiction of Draupadi according to her description. Even if Mahabharata is full of those, this one is all i could find in English:
«And there arose, after this from the centre of the sacrificial platform, a daughter also, called Panchali, who, blest with great good fortune, was exceedingly handsome. Her eyes were black, and large as lotus-petals, her complexion was dark, and her locks were blue and curly. Her nails were beautifully convex, and bright as burnished copper; her eye-brows were fair, and bosom was deep. (...) Her body gave out fragrance like that of a blue lotus, perceivable from a distance of full two miles. (...) When this girl of fair hips was born an incorporeal voice said, ”This dark-complexioned girl will be the first of all women, and she will be the cause of the destruction of many Kshatriyas. This slender-waisted one will, in time, accomplish the purpose of the gods, and along with her many a danger will overtake the Kauravas.”»
(Adi Parva)
(according to the internet, because i've never seen the original, and don't even know Sanskrit)
Just a few words about the character.
Her name was Krishnā (with stressed long "a"), which is feminine word for "Black". She was born after her brother Dhrishtadyumna from sacrificial fire of yajna as a daughter of Drupada, king of Panchala. Her more known names were Draupadi, which means "daughter of Drupada", Panchali, which means she was a princess of Panchala, and Yajnaseni, because she was born from yajna fire. Later she became a wife of five Pandavas.
I looked at her costumes on different adaptations of MahaBharata and on old pictures, and also i really love photoset "Recreation of Draupadi" by Focuz Studios! And i suppose, on my art, there might be some "mistakes" in her costume or jewelry, because indian jewelry is very complex. But anyway, i tried, because i like this character and wanted to make her portrait.
