âă»ă»ă» Crisp Leaves [Aoba Johsai Manager Series]
â Pairing: Aoba Johsai x Manager! Reader
â Warning: none
â Notes: Manager in this story will be portrayed as a girl. She will be tall, around 170.5 cm.
â· SUMMARY â¶
Yes, they were wondering about your almost nonexistent love live.
âHey, [Nickname]-chan, Iâve been thinking about this really hard,â Oikawa drawled after swallowing his favorite milk bread, cheek resting on top of the desk.
âKnowing Oikawa is thinking hard, must be something stupid,â Hanamaki commented.
âWhy did you say that so casually!?â sure enough, the slander managed to revive the captain from his slumpâshooting out from his seat almost instantly.
Currently, it was lunch and the third years were hanging out at Iwaizumi and your classâpushing your desks together and pulled up a few chairs to accommodate five people at the same time. While you packed your own lunch and Oikawa brought his milk bread, the rest was taking a short journey to the cafeteria for food.
âI couldnât help but agree,â Matsukawa added, hurting the boyâs pride even further.
â[Nickname]-chan!â of course, the best way for him to be out of this misery is to call out for your help.
âWhat is it?â you decided to indulge him this time because the captain seemed to be invested in this certain topic each minute passed.
Oikawa pointed at you before moving to gesture Hanamaki, Matsukawa, and Iwaizumi along with him including. âYou are surrounded by boys.â
Furrowing your eyebrows in confusion, you answered nonetheless. ââŠI can see that.â
âA lot of boys for more than three years!â
âWell, I am the manager of the boysâ volley club if you forget.â
âWhat are you on about?â Iwaizumi deadpanned, not liking how this certain topic stretched outâthe âridiculous alarmâ in the back of his head was ringing, signaling that indeed this conversation went from least normal to weird in an alarming rate.
âDonât you see, Iwa-chan!?â Oikawa gasped dramatically, pointing towards you in earnest. â[Nickname]-chan is surrounded by boys for more than three years! You bound to like some at some point! Why have I never heard about this!? I thought Iâm your best friend!â
Thereâs a pregnant silence before Hanamaki broke it by remarking, âYou really are a moron.â
Oikawa pressed a hand upon his chest, faking as if an arrow just stabbed through his heartânot believing this sort of betrayal. âIâm hurt Makki!â
âBut he does have a point,â Matsukawa, with his saving grace, decided to take this into his account for once. He looked at you for a moment and hummed. âI mean, everyone has been through that phase somehow. Wanna share?â
âThank you for making my point valid!â Oikawa harrumphed in triumph, which earned him a disgusted gaze from Iwaizumi.
You sighed in resignation, finally getting into conclusion. âTo put it simple, you want to know about my nonexistent love life?â
âIâve seen you getting confessed to by a senior so itâs not really nonexistent.â Hanamaki commented, pulling up a lazy smirk as he rested his chin on his palmâsuccessfully dragged out another resigned sigh. And how did he even know that was beyond you.
âWell, what do you want to know?â
âDid you have a crush on someone during middle school!?â Oikawa exclaimedâthe ruckus he caused managed to gather pairs of curious eyes diverting their gaze towards their table, and received a heartful smack on the back of his head courtesy of Iwaizumi.
âI did.â Your quick answer without a hint of hesitation made the four taken abackâdefinitely not expecting it. They were more ready with lots of stutter, reluctancy to reply, and flaming red engulfing your face as you confessed to themâthe usual routine if someone ever dug otherâs deepest secret.
âThat was fast,â Matsukawa remarked, shoulders eased up a little. True, even though youâre practically under the spotlight of sudden interrogation you didnât feel the need to be nervous or flusteredâwhich kind of intimidated them a bit. Contrast to it, they were actually the ones who were tense with whatever answer you had in storeâmaybe this is what you called an anticipation.
They would declare themselves a hypocrite if not once they thought of you as someone whoâs not attractiveâconsidering you were getting attentions from others especially during official matches. Theyâre the opposite gender so of course they took it to their mind at some moment.
âSo, who is it?â Hanamaki asked, rising a brow.
âTooru.â
ââŠPlease tell me youâre joking.â If short-circuiting is capable to happen in oneâs brain, then Iwaizumi had that undoubtedly. You? Had a crush on Oikawa during middle school? At this moment, snowing in tropical regions would likely be more possible than your statement. Even Hanamaki and Matsukawa found themselves rendered speechless by your revelation.
âSadly not,â all of his hope was crushed in an instant. You then directed a bored stare towards the said mentioned person. âTo be honest, Iâm questioning myself too. Do my taste really stooped that low?â
âY-Youâre mean, [Nickname]-chan!â Oikawa protested. âBut itâs nice knowing my charms works on you!â
âThank goodness youâve opened your eyes for the truth, [First Name],â Matsukawa sighed in relief, incurring another series of protests from the brunette and a satisfied firm nod from Hanamaki.
âIâm assuming youâre not currently?â the pink-haired boy added which earned him a nod.
âIâm over it, itâs an old story after all,â You took a short second for swallowing before continuing, smiling playfully. âKnowing heâs vowed his unending loyalty to volleyball, I know when to back off.â
âYou are a good person,â Hanamaki hummed in understanding. Itâs difficult to recover from heartbreak or backing down from a certain feelings, you managed to do that for Oikawa earn another respect point from him. You thought of the brunette thoroughly unlike the girls heâs been with, you respect and fully support him instead of telling him to tone down his ambitions for aiming higher in volleyball.
âThat, I can agree.â Unexpectedly, it came from the mentioned captain. His playfulness vanished as he moved to rested his chin on top of the desk. Thereâs solemn reflected on his eyes which you couldnât quite decipher; was it guilt?
âIf youâre thinking on apologizing then donât,â Stating firmly, you placed your chopsticks down to emphasized. Because thereâs nothing for him to apologize. Not with things which wasnât in his control to begin with. âI canât choose to who to like, and itâs my own decision anyway. If I felt hurt, itâs on me. Youâre not responsible for any of it, Tooru. Besides, either itâs romantic or not, I still love you.â
People would take it as cringe worthy or too dramatic in modern era such as currently. However, thatâs how feelings worked; sometimes extremely hard to put into words, sometimes it didnât even need to be vocalized. Your words held honestyâno matter what, you cared for Tooru, Hajime, and the others immensely.
â[Nickname]-channn!!â As usual, thereâs fake waterworks involved as soon as Oikawa successfully comprehended. As usual, he bolted from his seat to threw himself on you. Though, you keep it to yourself when you took a notice on how his hug was firmer than the usual playful ones.
Then there were more hands joining in; one settled on your head, one resting on your shoulder, and a little finger intertwined itself with yours. It was quite a sight to see, but you couldnât care less.
You love your boys.

âă»ă»ă» Crisp Leaves [Aoba Johsai Manager Series]
â Pairing: Aoba Johsai x Manager! Reader
â Warning: mentions of abuse and harassment
â Notes: Manager in this story will be portrayed as a girl. She will be tall, around 170.5 cm. And this is mainly my own indulgence towards Persona 5 because Iâm currently obsessed with Kurusu Akira/Amamiya Ren. Heâs such a lovely boy.
â· SUMMARY â¶
How about having a practice match at a school in Aoyama District which was famous for its dark rumors?
âMan, this feels like a school trip,â Hanamaki commented, eagerly drinking the view of endless stream of people piling in streets of Shibuya. Tokyo is one of the busiest metropolitan cities in the world, a stark contrast from their peaceful home in Miyagi. Everything never stood still, everything looked vibrant, everything made them feel like theyâre in another realm.
âItâs been a while since we go for a practice match this far,â Matsukawa hummed. Like Hanamaki, he studied their surroundings although almost too brief. Still, it satisfied his curiosity and adventurous heart.
âDonât wander off, everyone.â You sternly warned and it wasnât without any reason. âIf you got lost, you will be unsavable.â
Tokyo is an enormous city, Shibuya is a hectic area for 24/7âlosing one of your team member in a place where most population of humans gathered would be a disaster. Thankfully, your boys took your words to heartâprobably from the frightening image of getting lost in the seas of people.
All of them wanted to return home in one piece rather than stuck in a sleepless city.
âSo, what school are we heading to?â Iwaizumi asked, looking over your shoulder. Pulling up a map app, you inserted the place who graciously reaching out for Aoba Johsaiâs male volley team for a friendly practice match.
âShujin Academy,â you replied, without glancingâconcentrating on reading the route so all of you wouldnât get lost. âItâs actually not far from here. We just have to take the train and stop at Aoyama-Itchome Station.â
âThen, what are we waiting for?â Oikawa asked excitedly after stretching his arms to relief some build up fatigue from sitting too long in the bullet train. âLetâs go!â
Not wasting anymore time, it didnât even need a full 15 minutes for them piling into the trainâblending with other passengers (not really, to be precise. Their white and aqua uniform made them stood out). It was a nice choice to not departed from Miyagi so early in the morningâsaving them from being packed similar to sardines during morning rush hour. The train is still crowded but not to the point where they need to huddle up from peopleâs pushing.
âShujin Academy, huh?â Yahaba muttered thoughtfully, thumb and forefinger on his chin. âJust a while ago, Iâve seen them in the news. Something about their volleyball coach confessed his crimes in abusing his team and harassing female students.â
Watariâs eyes widened in horror from the information. âWhat? How could he do that!?â
âI heard itâs because he felt superior,â Kunimi frowned in disgust. How could he not? Abuse and harassment are inexcusable and unforgivable act, especially when itâs done by a teacher whoâs supposed to be a positive example for their students and made learning environment save and enjoyable. âApparently, he won a gold medal in the Olympics and because of that, he thought he could do anything he wants and got away with it.â
âThank goodness that guy is arrested.â Kindaichi sighed in relief. âThe volley team mustâve been suffering so much. Iâm glad this caseâs solved and brought to light.â
âThatâs also the main reason Coach Irihata accepted the proposal.â You remarked, smiling slightly.
âThereâs no way I would accept a practice match in a horrible condition as that.â The said man stated, his eyes softening. âHowever, the case is different now. They need support as much as they can and we can try bring the spirit of volley and friendly matches back to them.â
âThey lost the joy of volleyball. The least we can do to help is trying to return the joy back to them so they could be back on their feet.â Coach Mizoguchi followed.
âCoachesâŠ!â Kindaichi whispered in awe, clutching the front of his jacketâyou could see how he was touched by their words. âWhat an honorable purpose! I will give my best for this match!â
âArenât we always?â you remarked, smiling at your team. They were the best of the best in your school, of courseâeven so, they still pour everything they have into the match whether it was practice or not. âWell, we have to got off in the next stop, so watch out for your belongings.â
âYes, Maâam!â
.
.
Just like everything was different between Miyagi and Tokyo, it also included the schoolâs building and everything in it. Aoba Johsai had a grand and wide front yard with paved ground and even some greenery surrounding the area, meanwhile Shujin Academy didnât have that kind of luxury. They emphasized on the yard in between buildings, although it wasnât as big as your beloved school itâs still decent.
Once, youâve arrived, you were immediately welcomed by the Student Councilâs President went by the name Nijima Makoto. Sheâs an embodiment of a true leader in your opinion, it almost seemed impossible for you to be the same age as her. Although rather stiff and too formal, she graciously led the team towards the gym.
âWhat do you know about the team, assistant coach?â Hanamaki asked with a hint of tease.
Once you arrived at the gym, the boys instantly worked similar to a gearâplacing their bags on the floor and started stretching up.
âItâs manager, Takahiro,â you corrected but still feeling rather flattery from the title. Coach Irihata once mentioned you could replace him and all he would feel is ease because he knew you could handle the team well without his supervision. Itâs a high praise for you especially when it came from an experienced coach like him. âTo be honest, I know next to none.â
Matsukawa rose an eyebrow. âThatâs new from you.â
âWell, they did reach the nationals once, but I canât find the video for it which is a shame,â you sighed, tapping the end of your pen onto your notes. âI guess we have to start from zero.â
âExperience, observe, and adapt, right?â Oikawa replied, grunting as he tried to reach the tips of his shoe for leg stretching. âIt will be interesting!â
âIt wonât be if weâre getting pushed back like those times against Karasuno,â Iwaizumi stated, reminiscing the first practice match they had against the crows. Hinataâs agility paired with Kageyamaâs pin point toss was terrifying.
âWe have to see that during the match then,â you hummed in conclusion. âDo your best, okay?â
âSince when have we ever hold back, senpai?â Watari questioned, giving you a smile. âWeâre going to do our best even if itâs just a practice match!â
Snorting playfully, you grinned. âArenât you always, though?â
When the whistle rang throughout the gym, you knew it was time to go on full throttle.
.
.
Oikawa decided he needed to use the restroom for a moment after Aoba Johsai emerge as victors in two straight sets, officially ended the practice match. Of course, he excused himself after a short team meeting and a few words given from Shujin Academyâs new coach. He also made sure to at least inform someone about his absence.
He initially wanted to be back to the gym immediately, however thereâs a slight change in his plan.
âIs this yours?â Oikawa questioned, referring to the cute animal strap on his palm.
âYeah! Thank you so much! I didnât even notice it fell.â
The captain found a bright phone strap lying on the monochrome floor of the hallways and not far ahead, a girl with platinum blonde hair in pigtails. He connected all of it together and decided to chase after her, to return the object.
âNo problem,â he gave her the practiced smile he usually wore. Still, itâs impossible to notice the attractiveness of the girl standing in front of him. Sheâs clearly half European and her appearance spoke a lot of itânatural platinum blonde strands and blue eyes.
âHuh? Who are you?â then another student showed up, this time a boy with bright blonde hair. From the scowl he wore, Oikawa knew he didnât intend to be friendly. âYou wanna hit on her?â
As if it was a domino effect, another student (which he just realized stood far away back) with unruly black hair and thick-framed glasses also giving him a slight glare. This was going to a bad direction. Oikawa immediately rose his hands in surrender. âIâm just-â
âDonât be rude, Ryuji! Heâs just helping me!â thankfully, the girl hissed.
âWhat did I tell you about wandering around?â Now, he just needed to escape death. A vice grip landed on his shoulder sending a cold-sweat trailed down his temple. âAnd did you make this girl uncomfortable, Tooru?â
Itâs nice to know that his managerâs saccharine and chilling tone didnât only sending shivers down his spine because the three students in front of him paling slowly but surely.
âN-no! This is a misunderstanding! Heâs just helping me picking up the phone strap I dropped! He didnât do anything!â Bless the platinum blonde girl, she just saved his life.
âReally? Thank goodness, then.â The previous chilling aura instantly gone and replaced by a polite tone you usedâthatâs when Oikawa could release a relief sigh. âYou three are Shujin students, right? Nice to meet you.â
âY-you too!â the girl stuttered before smiling. âThe match before was awesome! Your team is so strong! You completely crushed ours, oh by the way, my name is Takamaki Ann!â
âCheer for our school more, would you?â the blonde sighed, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. âSakamoto Ryuji, sorry for glaring at you.â
Oikawa was impressedâthe boy may look and dressed like a delinquent, but his manners were decent. For image maybe?
âAmamiya Ren,â the last one introduced simplyâheâs a quiet one, the captain assessed.
âThank you, my name is Otohaku [First Name] and Iâm the manager,â you introduced yourself with a smile before gesturing towards him (and he certainly noticed the slight blush present on the boysâ cheeks when you introduced yourself). âAnd this is our volley teamâs captain, Oikawa Tooru.â
âIs this what an elite team looks like? None of our sports team even have a manager!â Takamaki commented, blue eyes shining in amazement.
âProbably, they have a well-balanced and organized team,â Amamiya added, pushing his glasses which slid up to his nose.
âYouâre right, though!â Sakamoto nodded enthusiastically. âMan, itâs been a while since I saw a match that good. You have a great attack and defense combination and rotation! It feels like watching the preliminaries!â
âI donât think you should be excited especially when your teamâs lost, but I get it,â Oikawa chuckled. âOur coach specifically accepted the practice match here to support you guys. We knew what the team have been through, itâs all over the news, so maybe we could help bring the spirit back up.â
ââŠReally?â Amamiya muttered, gray eyes slightly widened.
âDefinitely,â you replied. âIt mustâve been hard for you guys with all the negativity. But everything is okay now, right? Although, it will be a hard time for everything to settle down.â
âW-wowâŠâ Takamaki put a hand over her mouth. âYou guys are too nice, seriously.â
âYou have our coaches to thank for that.â Oikawa grinned. âAnyway, do you want to meet the team? We still have some time before going back to Miyagi.â
âSURE!â both Takamaki and Sakamoto exclaimed at the exact same timeâOikawa couldnât help but feeling the influence of their enthusiasm. Theyâre nice kids.
âThen, come on!â you added. âWeâll introduce you to everyone!â
âIt will be an honor,â Amamiya stated, a simple smile present on his face.
Oikawa smiledâthe day went from great to even greater than before, especially when you gained new friends along the way.

Aaaah, thank you so much for loving Crisp Leave series, itâs an honor! And here is your request! I hope I did justice to the Seijoh third years! Thank you for requesting!
Best Friends
â Pairing: Aoba Johsai's 3rd Years x Fem! Reader [Platonic]
â Warning: mentions of creeps, mentions of violence
â·SUMMARY â¶
Affection and protection, they didn't have to be in a relationship because it's what they always did to you.
Oikawa Tooru
It wasnât a surprise to know Oikawa was best of friends with Iwaizumi, however not many people know that youâre also his best friend. You were his childhood friend and was always been there through his thick and thin until he was now crowned as one of the best setters in the prefecture. The years of his hard work, sweat, and tearsâyouâve seen it all and always by his side.
Oikawa was an affectionate person for sure and he wasnât afraid to let it show in public.
He would wrap his arms around your waist as he begged to see your homework or needing help in tutoring for his tests and failing subjectsâdidnât even bat an eye from the onlookers around. He would hug you from behind when he saw your figure in the hallway and getting smacked by the head by Iwaizumi in the process.
(He would tone it down when he had a girlfriend and you didnât mind either, to prevent misunderstandings of course.)
Other things he would do would be leaning onto your shoulder when he felt bored, using your lap as a pillow when heâs tired from practice, placing his chin on your shoulder for being playful, and many more. You didnât mind.
Oikawa despised people who made you uncomfortable in any sorts of way. Someone pestering you for your number? Leave it to him slide-in, wrapping an arm around your waist, and peering down in a mocking way towards whoever lowlife being persistent. Stalking? Heâs on a sprint, my dear. Just one call, he would be there in a flash to chase that guy away with his snarky remarks.
Despite looking really carefree, Oikawa was an extremely observant person. He would immediately take a notice of how your shoulders slumped, the way you sighed more than one time in a dayâwith just a look, he knew and you couldnât hide anything from him.
He would come with giftsânot the type that would dent his wallet, but the small comforting things he knew could make your day a little bit better. Oikawa would shove candies, chocolate bars, or sweets to your hand, or he would take you out afterschool to buy snacks like crepes, ice cream, or even dinner like ramen from his favorite shop.
Oikawa would try his best to distract you from whateverâs bothering you, and heâs also all ears if you want to talkâhe wouldnât push you into telling him because he knew you would talk when you want to.
Iwaizumi Hajime
If youâre best-friends with Oikawa then it was almost impossible to not be best-friends with Iwaizumi tooâyou three were a package and no one dares to say otherwise. Without him, you and Oikawa would be in shamblesâIwaizumiâs like an anchor in your three-way friendship.
Unlike Oikawa, Iwaizumi was extremely subtle with his affections mainly because he didnât want attention or lingering gazes from the others. Cold? Iwaizumi was the first person to know and draped his jacket around your shoulders. Carrying heavy things? He would instantly snatch it from your grip and walked away as if it was nothing. Classes? He would lean against the wall to wait for you so you could walk together.
He did have those kinds of moments when he was outright with his affectionâif he won a match and youâre there watching, after that he would hug you and spin you around in glee or if you got a good great after working so hard for it and showed it to him, he would praise you and gave you a pat on the head.
Creeps bothering you? His fist would be there in an instant to send them flying to kingdom come. He saw someone hitting on you to the point your shoulders tremble from fright, then he would march forward, shielding you and glare menacingly at the guy without a second thought (his glare screams murder and the guy would be scrambling for his life). If he witnessed someone touching you without your consent, that guy would be on the floor writhing in pain from an uppercut he graciously gave.
If youâre not having the best day, Iwaizumi instantly knewâhe called it best-friend instincts and heâs always right. He would buy you your favorite drink from the vending machine and pressed it to your cheek when youâre staring off to spaceâthen asking whatâs wrong.
If he found you crying, then he wouldnât say a thingâjust pulling you into his arms and letting you cry until you couldnât. Bringing tissues along, he passed them to you and you would start talking automatically. Then, he would make it a movie night with lots of snacks at your house to make you feel betterâdraping an arm around your shoulder the whole night while you leaned your head against his shoulder.
Hanamaki Takahiro
Hanamaki would be a really playful typeâsomeone whoâs like Oikawa in some ways but he done it so casually as if it was just a breeze passing through. However, unlike Oikawa, Hanamaki wouldnât do it as frequentlyâstill heâs done it and anyone wouldnât question it because everyone knew how close you two were.
Hanamaki would wait for you so the two of you could go to the class together or even if heâs on the different class, he would still walk you and then ended up sprinting towards his own class like a goof he is. He would also sling his arm around your shoulder nonchalantly whether youâre walking towards the cafeteria, home, or even on your way towards his practice.
Other things he would do probably including dragging you to the convenience store in order to get his favorite cream puffs and ended up treating one for you, or even showed up at your house in a godly hour for an unscheduled movie time or just for bothering the heck out of you.
At least he brought offerings, so more reason for you to not just dump him on your yard.
Guys looking at you with ill intent? He was immediately high on alertâhe would wrap an arm around your shoulders, bringing you closer to him so he could shield you from the creeps. No worries because he would tell you and youâd follow his lead until he guided you to a safer place. Them being pushy, Hanamaki gladly took this matter with fists.
Not having the best day? Hanamaki Takahiro swept you away to your favorite food booth or led you to the arcadeâhe promised you a bunch of games and gifts he won from the crane machine. He hated seeing you down and wanted to help ease the burden.
Unlike Oikawa and Iwaizumi whoâs calm and composed, this boy would be a little flustered and panicked if you cry. He would tense and asked what happened in light stutters before pulling you into a hugâonly letting go if he heard you finished. After that, he would buy cold drinks so you could rehydrate and compress your eyes so it wouldnât be too swollen.
Matsukawa Issei
Matsukawa is similar to Hanamaki at some point and Iwaizumi the other halfâsubtle and casual. He wouldnât be too touchy in public, however he also didnât mind to slung an arm around your shoulders in the hallway with people present. But he made it clear that you and him were close.
He often ruffled your hair, itâs probably the thing he liked to do the most. He done it so often whatever the conditionâhim finishing a match, him greeting you when you bumped to each other in the hallway, him congratulating you. Aside from that he loved playing with itâif you leaned your head against his shoulder, he would comb your hair with his fingers almost automatically.
Other things? He would be the type of person whoâs already standing near your class when studyâs over so you two could walk to the next class, he bought yours and his lunch if both of you want to eat in the cafeteria so you wonât have to be pushed around in the crowd of hungry students, he reminded you about important things.
Creeps bothering you? Matsukawaâs height was already an intimidating threatâhe would tower over, glaring at the guy menacingly until he ran out of fright and out of sight. Them being pushy? He could just shove them forcefully until they stumbled and fell on their bottom embarrassingly before talking out loud about how disgusting heâs being so people could hear.
How about sad day? Matsukawa brought offeringsâhis best friend senses are tingling and itâs rarely been wrong. Handing you your favorite pack of snacks, he would coax you to talk. Of course, he didnât have any intend to be pushy but he though for you to let out whateverâs bothering you could make it a little bit better. He would stick to you a little longer until you feel better.
Crying? Matsukawa gave you a bitter smile before bringing you into a gentle hugâpressing your head to his chest and pat your back gently until you had your tears dry. After that, he would order a take out and made it a spontaneous sleep-overâinsisting itâs not the time for him to go home when his best friend needed him.

Let The Games Begin!
âă»ă»ă» Feathery Ink [Karasuno Manager Series]
â Pairing: Karasuno x Manager! Reader
â Warning: none
â Notes: This is a separate series from Crisp Leaves. Similar to Crisp Leaves, manager in this story will be portrayed as a girl. She will be tall. This is just my appreciation towards tall girls, you guys are amazing.
Previous:  âč Celebration âș | Next:  âč A Simple and Pure Strength âș
â· SUMMARY â¶
Preliminaries for Interhigh in Miyagi commenced today and Karasuno vowed to blast through and win them all.
âIâm sorry that you have to cheer from above, Hitoka-chan, [Name]-chan,â Shimizu apologized in advance because while she could watch the game on the bench, the two of you could only watch them quite far away. It couldnât be helped, only one manager was allowed to be on the bench during the game.
âItâs alright, Kiyoko-senpai,â you replied with determination. âIn fact, leave the cheering to us! Right, Hitoka-chan?â
âThatâs right!â Yachi nodded in agreement.
âThen, weâre counting on you two.â Shimizu smiled at both of your eagerness. While Shimizu called you by your given name, you decided to ask her if itâs okay to call her also by her given nameâshe instantly agreed, seemed extremely happy even. Since then, you started calling her by her given name still with a suffix.
âH-Hinata, are you okay?â Yachi asked in worry because the said orange-haired boy was holding his stomach and trembling.
âDo you still feel sick?â you also questioned, immediately kneeling and rummaging through your back for medicine. Which made you aware of another trembling figure sitting on the ground. âY-Yamaguchi-kun, are you okay?â
âIâm fine,â Hinata replied. âI threw up on the way here, so I feel better.â
âOf course youâd feel sick after eating all those katsudon for breakfast.â Tsukishima snickered.
âItâs normal to eat katsudon on game days!â Hinata defended himself.
âAnd by ânormalâ, you meanâŠâ Tsukishima deadpanned.
âYou dumbass! Hinata, you stupid dumbass!â as if adding more salt to the wound, Kageyama was there to yell at himâmaking you almost burst out laughing from the limited insult he had in his vocabulary.
âI-I feel like Iâm going to puke too, after remembering Hinata pukingâŠâ Yamaguchi pressed a hand upon his mouth, speaking in a very low voice which you almost missed. Both you and Tsukishima immediately snapped your head to face him.
âHuh?â Tsukishima replied in disbelief. âGo to bathroom, already!â
âH-Hereâs a plastic bag you could use!â you yelped thrusting the item into his palm. âThereâs also a medicine if you want! Donât hold it, Yamaguchi-kun!â
âI thought you were busy concentrating but you were actually trying not to puke!?â you could hear Sugawara exclaimed and now you could confirm that Azumane was somehow in a similar state as Yamaguchi.
âDo you need medicine, senpai?â youâre instantly kneeling on his side with yet another plastic bag (just for caution), a bottle of warm water, and a small package of medicine. âI also have warm water you could drink!â
âT-thanks, [Name]-chan,â Azumane whispered. âYouâre a life-saver.â
Even before the game, your team was in shambles.
.
.
Your first game would be against Ohgi Minami High Schoolâyou made sure to keep in track of the games and read the whole pamphlet to know about the teams who could be your opponents in the future. The warm-ups were smooth until it was time for the gameâthe first official game of Karasuno.
âThe spring tournament⊠Karasunoâs battle is about to startâŠ!â You could hear Yachi muttered from right beside youâupon the wall, hung the pure black banner for the team. Just like her, the nerves were getting into you the moment all of them assembled to hear a little bit of advice from Coach Ukai and encouraging speech from Takeda-sensei.
âOh, so you watch the game too, Ukai-sensei?â the older man beside you questioned, both of you looked to the side and you instantly recognized older man who helped Hinata nailing his control.
âYeah.â
âGood morning,â you greeted, bowing down which Yachi hastily copied.
âOh, so youâre the manager,â Coach Ukai also recognized you and didnât think twice to reply. Although he looked extremely strict (and he does on the court that is), but heâs not an entirely stiff person. And from his history, you put an absolute respect for him.
âUkai? Grandson?â Yachi tilted her head in confusion.
âHeâs the former Coach Ukai,â you explained. âHeâs the famous coach who brought Karasuno to nationals and also the current Coach Ukaiâs grandfather. The Little Giant was in his team.â
âHee!?â Yachi yelped.
â[Name]-nee-chan!â
âYuu-chan! Youâre here to watch, too?â Ogasawara Yuu was the little kid whoâs watching Hinata and Kageyama practice the day before and before you knew it, the two of you became friends. He didnât hesitate to ask you questions and you found yourself enjoyed in indulging his curiosity.
âYeah! Nee-chan, youâre from Karasuno, too, right? What are you doing up here?â
âT-Thereâs only one manager allowed on the bench. You didnât know that?â Yachi argued.
âThatâs why Iâm here too,â you added, pointing to yourself.
âOoh.â
The game itself was a sight to seeâeveryoneâs moves were full with confidence, they had a full control of their decisions and movements. For example, your captain was waiting for the opponent to do the feint and managed to received it cleanly.
âS-so fast! Itâs like he was waiting for it!â Yachi commented.
âItâs because they have been practicing with powerhouse schools with different kinds of power in serves and spikes. The diversity of their opponents from the training and their defenses and high level of it, the team is already used to it.â You pointed out, which made your friend gasped in awe.
As the game continued, you were immersed with the thrill of it. Kageyama successfully pulled off another service ace. Yachi was bouncing giddily from it.
âNice serve, Kageyama-kun!â you called out. He turned to glance at you and gave you a fist.
âAnother service ace!â Yachi cheered.
âNow weâre on set point,â You added, looking at the score board. Â
The match was going on smoothly for Karasuno, sure there was a little bump but thatâs because you felt Ohgi Minami didnât really give it their all after knowing they would loseâsometimes, people who witnessed someone whoâs more skilled than them felt a tug of helplessness. However, not doing your best isnât acceptable.
Thankfully, they seemed to change and blasted through after their former captain pulled up a speech. Even though they still loss, you knew it would make them even stronger. The frustration would linger and push them into working hard to win.
Thatâs that and now, you didnât even have a chance to bask in your victory because another threat was looming.
You peeked over Kageyamaâs shoulder, your own shoulder trembled slightlyâyou didnât even need to look to know how Hinata and Yachi were both terrified out of their wits from the sight. While waiting for the results, your team watched the on-going match and at the same time witnessing something downright terrifying.
Kakugawaâs #9 basically pushed the ball over the block with ease and it almost send you into an early cardiac arrest. Hinata and Yachi squeaked in fright.
âThatâs creepy!â Tanaka commented, words muffled from how he munched on a banana.
âItâs a weaponâŠâ Azumane muttered in disbelief. âHis height is a weaponâŠâ
âI think Iâm the one who needs the medicine now,â you whispered, feeling your heart threatened to jump out from your throat.
âItâs just height,â Kageyama said, peeling on a banana.
âItâs almost astronomical on how youâre still calm after watching that,â you sighed.
âI guess we know who weâre playing next,â He then continued, chewing on his food. After the match was over, the team had slight break and decided to study the charts. Your next opponent would be Kakugawa High School, who has an absurdly tall member who messes with your depth of perception.
Yachi squeaked in fright when the said tall member walked pass byâclearly towering over everyone with his two meters height.
âT-two meters is super huge,â Hinata stuttered, shoulders trembling.
â201 centimeters and 162 centimeters, huhâŠâ Yamaguchi muttered, looking at the orange-haired boy.
âIâm 163 if you round it up-!â Hinata argued.
â201 centimeters and 162 centimeters, thereâs a 40 centimeters difference.â Tsukishima cut him off.
âListen!â
âF-forty centimeters is the same size as Ketty-chan,â Yachi tried to cheer him up. âItâs not that big.â
âIs that an attempt to cheer him up?â Tsukishima commented.
âIt sure is.â You confirmed, smiling nervously.
âTekachu is also 40 centimeters,â Yamaguchi added.
âSo is a Fujikujira,â Tsukishima followed, which made all of you confused.
âF-Fujikujira?â you questioned. âWhatâs that?â
âItâs a kind of shark.â
âYouâre smart, Tsukki!â Yamaguchi praised.
Hinata sluggishly walkedâface pale and filled with resignation. âIâŠwant to combine with that shark⊠If I combined with a Fujikujira, Iâd be two meters tallâŠâ
âHey, what are you talking about?â Kageyama was thoroughly confused with his antics. He rose an eyebrow. âAre you really scared?â
It made Yachi worried but Shimizu was quick to reassure her that it would be fine, half of it was directed to you too. You tried your best not to worryâhe sure has height, but Karasuno had strategies. Everything should be alright.

Celebration
âă»ă»ă» Feathery Ink [Karasuno Manager Series]
â Pairing: Karasuno x Manager! Reader
â Warning: none
â Notes: This is a separate series from Crisp Leaves. Similar to Crisp Leaves, manager in this story will be portrayed as a girl. She will be tall. This is just my appreciation towards tall girls, you guys are amazing.
Previous:  âč Cogs âș | Next:  âč Let The Games Begin! âș
â· SUMMARY â¶
Last day of training calls for celebration for everyoneâs hard work, so itâs barbeque time!
âAll right, meat!â
âIâm starving!â
While the boys freshened up after practice matches, the managers were already on the move to prepare for the barbeque. Since there were quite a lot of people, the coaches decided to held it on the backyard of the gym, where the sharp hill stood just beside it. The coaches helped setting up the grills while the managers divided to cater different things.
Yachi decided she would get the utensils they needed; paper plates, chopsticks, paper cups, trays for rice balls, and other things. Shimizu would cover for the rice ball making, Yukie and Eri were in charge on cutting the vegetables in bite-size, Kaori and Mako would clean the vegetables before it was cut.
Meanwhile, youâre in charge of preparing the condiments and sauces, unwrapping the meat cuts, and arranged them on a bigger plate. Aside from that you had to make sure the meats searing on the grills werenât charred.
â[Name]-chan, please replace me for cutting the onions,â Eri sobbed, reaching out to you with grabby hands.
âAlright, senpai,â you giggled in reply because Eri was clearly needing a break and watching the meats seared was a great break for her. Quickly, you stood on her place and started slicing the tear-induced-menaces after washing your hands.
It didnât take long for you to suffer the same fate as the Ubugawaâs managerâthe first seven slices went through without a hitch, but when you reached the tenth your eyes started to sting and blurry from the pain. Then tears began trailing down your cheeks, and you wiped it youâre your shirt sleeve.
âD-Donât cry, [Name]-san!!â you looked up, seeing Hinata with his place face quivering on his feet. âW-what should I do!?â
âItâs fine, Shoyo-kun, itâs just the onions,â you sniffled pointed towards the bowl full of it. âIt hurts my eyes.â
âI can take your place, Otohaku-chan!â Lev popped up beside Hinata.
âInstead of cutting the onions, youâll chop your fingers off,â Yaku deadpanned before offering. âHere, let me do it.â
âNo, itâs alright, Yaku-san,â you shook your head. âItâs time for you to have a break, not working.â
Being persistent sometimes has itâs perks, it took numbers of rejection to finally have Yaku gave up. You knew he was just trying to help, but you didnât want to rob his time relaxing. When all the preparations were done, the boys were already surrounding the grills with hungry faces. Coach Nekomata gave them a light speech along with praises for their hard work over the week, and they dived to grab on the meat straight from the grill.
âTHANKS FOR THE FOOD!â
Just like Kaori, you brought a plate of rice balls to offer and managed to witnessed Yukieâs enormous appetite. She practically inhaled four rice balls in one go and youâre not the only who was dumbfounded from it.
.
.
Konoha and Komi almost had their souls went to heaven from the frightening circle Nishinoya, Tanaka, and Taketora made. Well, they did elbow each other to encourage one another getting close or at least having a talk with Shimizu. The girl walked pass them holding a paper plate with foodâlooking extremely gorgeous and she didnât even try.
âThat was scary,â Konoha muttered underneath his breath. The three finally stopped because of Karasuno and Nekomaâs captain scolded themâthe three immediately shrunk.
âThey really had their guard up, huh,â Komi added, feeling his energy drained from such a scary encounter.
âUhm, excuse me,â the two turned to look over their shoulder and thatâs when they noticedâKarasunoâs other first year manager whoâs Bokuto constantly talking about. The owl captain wouldnât shut up about her much to their annoyance and now they knew why.
âWould you like some rice ball?â
âSure,â Konoha replied dumbly.
âIâll take two,â Komi followed with a daze. You placed one on Konohaâs empty paper plate and two for Komi upon his request. Smiling at them, you proceeded to excuse yourself so you could offer to someone else.
Following your figure dazedly, they noticed how the light shone even brighter and basked you in a beautiful glow. Thatâs when they thought of a conclusion.
A goddess just graces us mere mortals! They screamed in their head.
.
.
You tried to calm Yachi down from her traumatizing experience being surrounded by absurdly tall boys (âTitans, [Name]-chan! Titans!â). Thankfully, all of them were nice enough to made room so your friend could reach for some meat. Yachi almost cried in happiness from the real taste of meat.
From the sidelines, Shimizu and the other managers were watching the two of you while talking about the boys sometimes.
âHow much are you going to eat?â Kaori questioned because Yukie was having a ridiculous amount of food towering on her plate and she just kept munching away without care.
âThe third-years in Karasuno all seems pretty mature,â Mako commented.
âOur ace is weak-willed, though,â Shimizu smiled sheepishly.
âWhat? Really?â Eri replied in surprise. âEven though he looks that scary?â
âThough, I think thatâs still better than our simpleton ace,â Kaori commented. âStill,â
Their eyes were directed towards where the said simpleton ace was standing and placing meat until it towered on your empty plate.
âEat more, [Name]-chan! Or you wonât get even taller!â he stated.
âAnd eat more vegetables!â Kuroo added, placing cabbages and carrots to your plate, adding even more food.
âHave some rice balls, too.â Somehow, even Akaashi participated in this whole fiasco and put a rice ball onto your plate. Now, thereâs a ridiculous amount of food on your plate.
ââŠI canât eat this much,â you commented, staring at the food filling your plate.
âNonsense, I donât see you eat anything even when the others are,â Akaashi stated. âYouâre too busy handling other things nonstop.â
âHave a break will you,â Kuroo patted your back. âEveryoneâs having fun and you should too.â
âHave more meat, [Name]-san!â Hinata said.
âYou can have my share, Otohaku-chan!â Lev followed and you immediately shook your head.
âAt least he and Akaashi took care of our baby manager well,â Kaori sighed in relief.
â[Name]-chan is close with Fukurodaniâs captain and setter, huh? Even Nekomaâs captain,â Mako giggled. âSheâs drawing everyone in.â
âWell, itâs rare for a first-year to be as tall as her,â Eri grinned. âThe boys are especially poles so itâs probably great not to strain their neck once in a while from looking down.â
âKarasunoâs pretty lucky to have her, huh?â Yukie said after swallowing her food.
âYeah, we are,â Shimizu smiled.
.
.
âDid you have fun?â Sawamura asked you when youâre helping other managers to clean up the remaining plates left behind on the table along with other scraps littering around. He picked up a few paper cups and placed it into the trash bin.
âDefinitely,â you answered without hesitation. âEveryoneâs so nice, itâs probably the most fun Iâve had.â
âThank goodness, then,â he gave you a smile.
âIâm really glad I joined the volleyball club,â you commented, grinning.
âAnd we glad to have you here,â the captain chuckled and replied.
Everything was over by the time the sun started to sink into the horizonâtime truly flew by when you enjoyed it. Since Miyagi was quite a distance from Saitama, they needed to depart first or they would be back extremely late at night. Yukie and Eri were fake-crying and joking about refusing to let you goâin the end, youâre all exchanging numbers so you could keep in touch.
âDid you have fun, Otohaku-san?â
âCoincidentally, you asked the same question as my captain, Akaashi-san.â The Fukurodani setter, like before, helping you on carrying the extra luggage in hand although you did tell him itâs only until you reached the stairs. âAnd to answer, I am. These one week of training camp is fun. Somehow, I donât want this to be over.â
âDonât worry, weâll meet again,â Akaashi replied. âAt the Spring Interhigh.â
âIâm sure we will, Akaashi-san.â you smiled. âAnd thank you for helping me with luggage.â
â[Name]-chan!!â Bokuto bounded over with a grin plastered on his face. âWeâll be waiting at the nationals!â
âKarasuno, Bokuto-san. Otohaku-san doesnât play volleyball.â Akaashi deadpanned.
âJust agree with me once, Akaashi!â
âWell, whatever he said,â Kuroo piped up, approaching the three of you. âMade sure your team go to the nationals so we could meet again and make the battle came true.â
âIâll do my best, Kuroo-san.â Then Kuroo reached out to ruffle your hair, itâs been a while since he did that and you werenât even going to lie about enjoying it. The cat captain was similar to an older brother now.
âOff you go then, [Name],â he removed his hand from your head. âAnd donât miss me.â
âHow could I when I have your phone number, Kuroo-san?â you snickered. âYouâre probably going to bombard me with chemistry puns at 10pm.â
âThen, Iâm gonna call you every day so you wonât have to deal with Kuroo!â Bokuto declared before laughing victoriously.
âPlease block his number immediately, Otohaku-san,â Akaashi stated. âOr you wonât be getting any sleep. His talking is endless.â
âWhy, Akaashi!?â the said boy whined.
âAside from that, be careful on your way home,â Akaashi decided to ignore the captain and gave you a small smile.
You returned his smile. âWill do, Akaashi-san.â
With that, the whole week of summer training camps has come to an end. The whole team watched you guys drove away into the other way back to Miyagi.
.
.
âYou have a match tomorrow, donât you?â former Coach Ukai questioned, brows creased from the insistence of your combi. âThatâs probably enough, then!â
âOne more! Just one more!â Hinata pleaded.
âWeâll finish after this one!â Kageyama added.
Two days of practicing to prepare for the preliminaries, just a day before the match Sawamura dismissed them early to get some rest. Since it would be impossible to use the gym unless getting an earful from him, Kageyama and Hinata needed to look for another place. Former Coach Ukai lent them the court only for a bit, just until the others who wants to practice comes.
And you were there to hold a leash if theyâre being stubborn or something.
âThis is the last, alright?â you scolded the two. âWe shouldnât bother the others who wants to practice here. And you should rest before the match.â
Thankfully the older man letting them had the court just one more time and you couldnât help but feeling grateful of it. You sighed before turning to face former Coach Ukai and bowed down. âOn their behalf, I apologize.â
âItâs fine.â Former Coach Ukai dismissed it. âTheir eagerness is a great thing, but even eagerness isnât going to magically give them energy. It would be bad if they burnt out even before the game started.â
â[Name]-san! Can you throw us the ball?â Hinata called out.
In the end, the two managed to successfully killed the quickâand sure enough, it also impressed former Coach Ukai which added more reassurance that your team would be more than okay to face the entire preliminaries and became champions.

Hello, you can hcs with Hibari, Tsuna, Reborn, Dino x gn reader who feel inferior because they cannot fight, but only gives them a shield and healing, they are also really kind and tenacious. Please?<3
Sure! I hope I could write Reborn right. Itâs been a while since I wrote about him! Anyways, enjoy and thank you for requesting!
If you have a mundane life, then itâs not crucial thing to have. However, your life has been turned upside down completelyâbeing involved with the darker side of society called mafia, ability to defend and fight is extremely important. Why? Because your life depends on itânobody will always be there to protect you.
You did try, but reality slapped you in the face almost immediatelyâyour progress is too slow and without a doubt it would get you killed the moment you entered the warzone. Others around you are completely fine handling things on their own while you need to stay in the far back.
Sawada Tsunayoshi
Much like Kyoko and Haru, you didnât have any fighting skillâthe best you have will be at least manage to defend yourself using shields. Which was why Tsuna didnât want you to be involved in any kinds of condition.
Tsuna strongly refused having you in the battle fieldâyou should stay in the back with Kyoko and Haru and let him, Gokudera, Yamamoto, and the others fight instead. Knowing you will be safe under Bianchi and Fuutaâs care was enough for him to tackle anything.
However, he noticed you didnât back down and practically ignored all his pleading and warning. Reborn wasnât being helpful eitherâfor a hitman like him, having experience in battle and lending a hand when your comrades in need was what a subordinate do. Especially when Tsunaâs a boss who needs people he could trust.
Well, your stubbornness clearly was a correct choice because Tsuna wouldâve been killed if you didnât cover for his blind-spot. Either way, you managed to prove yourself to be useful and wanting to help as much as you could.
He was quite upset, sure, but he didnât have a heart to be upset with you forever since you saved him by shielding him from an enemyâs attack. You accepted the scolding he had when you patched him up and healed him using your sun-flame.
But, after that, Tsuna thanked you for your help and you couldnât help but being proud of that achievement. Tackling him into a hug, he was quite flustered from the affection you showed him with Gokudera yelling at you to let go of his dearest boss.
Hibari Kyoya
When Hibari bit to death anyone he considered enemy, Kusakabe and you would always be in the back. The raven-haired boy didnât even bat an eyeâknowing Kusakabe was there, he knew the older would refrain you from doing moronic things.
Sometimes, you wondered why on earth this boy hasnât yet to kick you out or anything similar. In Hibariâs point of view, power is everythingâwith power you could make anyone kneel down beneath your feet. You couldnât fight and he still kept you around anyway. Content? No way. You felt extremely uncomfortable in your own skin.
But he learned your tenacity the moment you jumped to cover his blind spot. When the enemy strike, you shielded him with anything you could get your hands on. The moment they caught off guard, he bit them to death instantlyâof course, not forgetting to glare at you menacingly from being so incredibly stupid and impulsive.
You knew Hibari hates having debt unpaidâwhich was why he just grumbled underneath his breath when you asked to patch his wounds. He didnât shove you away as you hovered sun flame upon his woundsâwatching as the injury healed from the regenerating ability.
Usually, he would push your hand away or extremely reluctantly obeyed youâyou need to at least prepared a deal involving Dino or Reborn to have him sit down while you tend his injuries. Now, he just sat down with no resistance and somehow, it made you incredibly happy.
While Hibari usually didnât even bother to notice any details, now he began noticing details. Your sun flame is warmâsimilar to how a blanket draped over on chilly night, or how the temperature he prefers for his tea. That and how youâre so stubborn to do it even against minor injuries he had.
And he found that itâs not that bad (and he would never admit it out loud, hell could freeze over first).
Dino Cavallone
Dino swore, no, he basically has an oath to never let you into his fight as a boss. Sure, youâre his subordinate and he understood that his subordinate needs to assist him in every way possibleâbut, you could do more in the back rather than joining him in the field.
You protested at first for this, however he pointed out rather sharply at your inability to fightâit stung more than you thought, especially when it came from your kind boss. Dino immediately apologized for his wrong wordings, but he didnât apologize for not letting you follow him to the dangerous side.
However, in a time of pinch, you knew you had to step in somehowâthatâs how you ended up covering for him when an enemy tried to strike his blind spot. Clearly, you defied his orders and you prepared for the punishment for it.
Dino did give you an earful as soon as you were back at the base along with the others, but in the end he thanked you and pulled you into a tight hug. He whispered how he was terrified of possibly lose you or any of his comrades, and how he was extremely relief knowing youâre fine.
Reborn
Just like Hibariâs case, you would never have an understanding about this manâs mindset. Clearly, youâre a liability to him with your inability to fightâyou could only patch him up and updating him about his work list or something. He made you his personal assistant (kind of).
Sure, he did train you a bit so you would at least have a fight rather than die a dogâs death someday. But the only thing you could do best was defending yourself with a really low chance of attacking backâit was already an embarrassment on its own.
Still, Reborn kept you around anywayâfor whatever reason you couldnât understand.
However, you finally proved him that you could be at least a bit help on the battle fieldâby being his shield to deflect an enemyâs attack, which he instantly shot right after.
Magically, he didnât scold you or giving you glowering stare full of threat. Instead, he looked amused with your choice and applaud you for it indirectly when you tried to patch his minor injuries. Receiving a praise from the worldâs number one hitman wasnât something you could have every day, and itâs simple to say that youâre extremely proud about it.

âă»ă»ă» Crisp Leaves [Aoba Johsai Manager Series]
â Pairing: Aoba Johsai x Manager! Reader
â Warning: sick, fainting
â Notes: Manager in this story will be portrayed as a girl. She will be tall, around 170.5 cm.
â· SUMMARY â¶
Next time, Iwaizumi will strangle you for your stupidity for sure.
Youâre sickâthe only word to summarize the symptoms youâre currently having. Opening your eyes, you felt your head heavy as if was stuffed with cotton instead of being refreshed like usual. Soon, you noticed on how only with a slight breeze your body shivered instinctively even if youâre buried under thick layers of blanket.
Someone could fry themselves from how hot it would be under there, but you were your best in terms of health currently and it already answered a thousand questions. However, rather than calling the teacher you would be absent for today, you decided to be a complete moron and just went on to school like you always do as if it was nothing.
And you instantly regret the idea, cursing yourself for your stupidity while doing soâit was tremendously hard to focus on class, your body felt really sluggish even though you didnât move an inch from your desk, worst every part of your body was now in pain from the strain you put it.
Iwaizumi certainly didnât miss thisâusually youâre sitting up straight on your seat, writing, or even reading something. But this time, youâre slumped against the desk, chest rising in faster pace than the normal ones. However, school was more hectic than usual and he found the only class he shared with you for the day was homeroom.
He decided to confront you at practice in order to kick you outâan extremely well-made plan and he would take no for an answer. As he thought, youâre in the middle of writing notes on the benchâface flushed unhealthily from the normal one. And itâs not only him who noticed how unwell you wereâthe whole team did. Good, he would have everyone agree on sending you home and you couldnât argue about it.
âYouâre having a freaking fever, [Name],â Hanamaki is usually playful, but this time his voice was stern when you offered him the water bottle. âYou have to go home.â
âGet some rest,â Matsukawa nodded in agreement, brows furrowing in concern. âOne day off practice isnât the end of the world. You could just catch up the next day, weâll fill you in.â
âThe prelims are in a week and I canât afford to slack off either,â you protested.
âYouâre not slacking off, youâre sick.â Oikawa remarked, the usual teasing and lightness in his voice being forgotten at the moment. âThatâs different.â
âHajime, tell them Iâm fine-â
Iwaizumi knew you would turn to seek for an argument from him in the end, but he once never expected for you to crumpled right in front of him so suddenly. Thankfully, his reflexes saved you from hitting the groundâan arm around your back. Instantly, the place was in chaos from how panic was quick to spread.
âShit!â Oikawa cursed, dropping his water bottle and immediately kneeled down beside your figure.
âSomeone get a clean towel and cold water!â Iwaizumi barked to anyone who could hear him. âWe have to cool her down!â
Watari was the first one to snapped out of his panic-induced haze, and he instantly scrambled to reach for his bag. Kindaichi and Kunimi bolted towards the entrance, searching for Coach Irihata, Coach Mizoguchi, or whoever teacherâs around.
Iwaizumi tried to fix his hold around you as gentle as possibleâhe wouldnât want to have you draped over his lap because of respectful purposes, however this time he decided to ignore it. Your head was leaning heavily on his shoulder, forehead resting on his neck.
The temperature youâre radiating felt as if it burned himâit was frightening. Even in your unconscious state, youâre having trouble with breathing, your skin was extremely pale, some strands of your hair stuck onto your skin from how youâre drenched in cold sweat.
âWe have to go to the hospital at this rate,â Matsukawa muttered, voice grim. âHer condition is way worse than before.â
âHereâs a few jackets, senpai!â Yahaba dropped onto his knees, in his hands were their team jacket piled up. Oikawa muttered a thank you before taking the jackets, wrapping you up to keep you warm. Watari approached and quietly handed a cool towel heâs searching for, Iwaizumi accepted it and immediately placed it upon your burning foreheadâhoping it would cool you down.
After a few moments, Kyotani burst into the gymâheavily panting as if he ran a mile. Still, he managed to jogged towards the little circle formed in the gym. Wordlessly, he slapped a package of cooling patch for fevers down to Hanamakiâs hand. The pink-haired boy wasted no time to rip the package open and pulled one out.
âOikawa, hereâs a cooling patch.â Oikawa removed the cover sticker and reached out to push some strands of your hair away, he then gently put the patch onto your foreheadâreplacing the warm towel.
It seemed to work because your harsh panting started to subsided a little bit. At the same time, Kunimi and Kindaichi arrived back at the gym with Coach Irihata and Coach Mizoguchi on tow.
âHow did this happen?â Coach Irihata asked, kneeling beside Iwaizumi to check on you. âGo to the infirmary, I already made sure the schoolâs doctor is there.â
âSheâs feeling unwell since morning but still refused to go home even with a fever,â Oikawa explained grufflyâknowing he would give you an earful once you get better.
Iwaizumi didnât say anything, instead he immediately slipped an arm under your knees and lifted you upâjogging towards the infirmary with the rest of the team on tow.
.
.
âWhat should you say to us, dear manager?â Oikawa questioned and giving you a smile, the smile which hold his annoyance.
You wished you could shrink down to your bed or praying that the ground suddenly opened up to swallowed you from existence. You laughed nervously, scratching your cheek lightly while doing soâwhich earned series of pointed glares directed towards you.
You sighed in resignation. âIâm sorry.â
âStop trying to send us to early cardiac arrest, dumbass.â Iwaizumi scolded, hitting your forehead lightly with his fist. Itâs been a day since youâre admitted to the infirmary, thankfully the doctor said that you only needed restâshe even wrote you an absence letter for your homeroom teacher.
Currently it was afternoon right after class, and the team decided to visit you in your home. Coach Irihata excused them from practice today so they could check up on you. So, here you were, in your room with the boys piling in.
It was fortunate that your house was a traditional Japanese homeâyour room was wide enough for them and with only slide of the shoji door on the right, it connected to the porch so they wouldnât suffocate in a secluded place. You sat on the futon, thick blanket draped on your shoulders while another one covered your waist down.
âIt was scary,â Matsukawa commented, frowning as he did so. âYou passed out so suddenly.â
âYou better pay for my hospital bills if I have a heart attack one day,â Hanamaki added, laying down on his side.
âI banned you from practice tomorrow,â Oikawa grumbled, draping his body over your lap. Caressing his hair, you knew your childhood friend was upsetâhis decision was rather petty but you understood. Oikawa would pout or whined but it was rare for him to be truly upset.
âAlright, captain.â
âYouâre also forbidden watching matches and take notes at home. Just rest.â
âUnderstood.â
âOh, I almost forgot,â Watari piped up, and then handing you a paper bag filled with snacks. âUs second years bought this on the way, hope you feel better, senpai.â
âThank you, Watari-kun, Yahaba-kun, Kyotani-kun,â you noticed they filled the bag with your favorites and a few bottles of honey lemon water.
âN-No problem, senpai!â Yahaba replied, face tinged with red and you gave him a smile meanwhile Kyotani, who sat farther away just nodded.
âNo fair, senpai, you stole a head start!â Kindaichi hissed at his senior, eyes narrowing.
âWe brought fruits,â Kunimi followed, pushing a basket filled assorted fruitsâthere were apples, pears, lemons, and oranges. âI donât know what to choose and Kindaichi is unhelpful, so we just grab the most common ones.â
âOi, Kunimi!â
âSomehow this became a competition.â Hanamaki snickered from the obvious display.
âYou donât have to bring me anything, though,â you smiled sheepishly, but couldnât help feeling warm with all the things they did to make you feel better. âStill, I appreciate it. Thank you.â
âAside from that, rest so you could go back to school,â Iwaizumi stated, folding his arms across his chest. âWe need you. The preliminaries coming up.â
âPractice would be boringgg without you, thatâs what Iwaizumi meant,â Matsukawa added, earning a distasteful glare from the said brunette. âBesides, the only one who can keep Oikawa in line aside from him is you.â
âAww, I donât know youâre this sweet, Hajime,â you teased your childhood friend whoâs not quite honest with his feelings constantly. âThis is why I love you more than Tooru.â
âYou take that back, [Nickname]-chan!!â Oikawa snapped his head up and almost hit your chin in the process. Then he proceeded to wrapped his arms around your waist and buried his face to your stomach. âI know you love me more! Who loves a brute like Iwa-chan?â
âWhy you, Shittykawa!â
âFine, fine, I love you too, you big baby,â you cooed. âAnd Hajime, please donât kill him in my house. You can do it elsewhere.â
âYou love me but youâre fine with me being killed by Iwa-chan!?â
Ah, a peaceful day for your recovery.

â· SUMMARY â¶
Last day of summer training camp is here!
For the first time, youâre kind of reluctant rising from the warm and comfortable futon you slept on. However, once youâre mind began to work and realizing yourself that youâre still in the training camp, you jolted awake almost instantlyâremoving the blanket and began tidying up.
Gathering your facewash and toothbrush to freshen up, you found yourself yawning in betweenâitâs not just you fortunately, because Yachi did the same.
âIâm sure youâre pretty tired, Hitoka-chan, [Name]-chan,â Shimizu giggled at both of you. âAre you two okay?â
âYes! Weâre sorry!â Yachi was quick to apologize for the both of you.
âTodayâs the last day, so letâs do our best.â
âRight!â this time, youâre the one who answered her.
Yachi said she was going on ahead, and that left you still tidying upâyouâre thinking of just packed everything because in the evening, youâre already be on your way back to Miyagi. That and Takeda-sensei informed the managers about something so you would have no time to pack freely. After you finished everything, you finally could freshen up and start the day.
Descending downstairs towards the womenâs bathroom, you bumped into Kageyama who went to fetch on something he left behind.
âOh, Kageyama-kun, morning.â You greeted.
âMorning, [Name]-san.â He replied with a nod.
âYou seemed energetic, werenât you practicing with Hitoka-chan the night before?â
âOh, about that,â you could see the excitement glittering from his eyes, he definitely had good news to present because for the past few days the boy was frustrated. âThe tosses finally worked. Coach Ukai gave me some directions and it worked.â
âReally? Thatâs great!â the excitement was infectious, alright. You knew Kageyama had been working extremely hard to make it successful and after days of failure, he finally nailed itâyou were incredibly happy for him. âI canât wait to see it!â
âIf that dumbass could keep up that is,â the raven-haired boy them grumbled underneath his breath.
âDonât worry, Shoyo-kun changed,â you assured him. âHim, you, and the whole team too. Even Tsukishima-kun. Thatâs why I canât wait to see this new Karasuno and the new quick.â
âWe will make that quick happen,â Kageyama stated without hesitation. âBecause we want to go to the nationals.â
You smiled at him. âI have no doubt.â
.
.
âUhm, not to be offensive, but,â you found your shoulders shook violently from you tried your best to withstand the urge to burst out laughing and rolling on the floorâit practically costed you your whole will to hold it. âWhy are you drooling, Kageyama-kun?â
Yachi watched from the sidelinesâyou approached Kageyama to gave him his water bottle and from whatever youâre talking about with him, he seemed to be extremely embarrassed. Then the raved-haired boy proceeded to lean closer and whispered something beside your earâwhich made Yachi squeaked.
â[Name]-chan and Kageyama-kun is quite close these days, right?â Shimizu suddenly said.
âYes,â Yachi answered almost immediately. â[Name]-chan said Kageyama-kun asked for her advices and Kageyama-kun usually walked her home after club when itâs too dark.â
âDo you think something else happened between them?â Yachi couldnât help but feeling fire engulfed her face instantly from Shimizuâs (not-serious) speculation.
âWHA-NO-HEEE!?â
âIâm just kidding, Hitoka-chan!â still, Shimizu pretty much enjoyed the extremely flustered girlâs reaction. âOh, [Name]-chan, what did you talk about with Kageyama-kun?â
After distributing half of the water bottles, you jogged back to where Yachi and Shimizu stood. You tilted your head before snickering underneath your breath and answered. âHe asked something about barbeque this afternoon.â
âHow did he know!?â Yachi yelped because mainly the info was shared only between the coaches, who arranged the whole thing, and the managers, whoâs in charge to prepare all the ingredients.
âSawamura probably accidently eavesdropping the coach,â Shimizu pointed out, smiling. âBy the way, Hitoka-chan shouldnât you give the other half away?â
âI-IâM SORRY!!â
.
.
Final match for Karasuno was against Fukurodaniâeven from all the losses, the boys were still in high-spirits thanks to Sawamuraâs short speech. You knew they wouldnât be disappointed even though they loss so many matches because now they earned several new weapons for the preliminaries.
Through the match, you understood how Fukurodani is called a powerhouseâthe players are skilled and knew the opportunities to score even when their receives a bit off. That and Akaashi truly lived up to his name as a setter in the line-up. Also, Bokutoâs insane angle of spikes were sights to see every time.
âThatâs an insane cut shot,â Sugawara commented which made Yachi looked at him questioningly, thankfully Shimizu was ready with an explanation.
âHitting at a sharp angle against three blockers is really tricky. It can be hard on your shoulders if theyâre not flexible, too.â
â[Name]-chan, [Name]-chan! Did you see that!? Did you see my awesome cut shot!?â Bokuto called out way from the other side of the court, looking at you expectantly after he pulled-off the move. You glanced towards Sawamura in search of his approval to reply to the excited owl-captain, to which he nodded.
âI saw it!â You replied with a smile. âItâs amazing, Bokuto-san! Do you think you could hit like that again?â
âANYTHING FOR [NAME]-CHAN!!â
You almost laughed at Akaashiâs look of disapproval, both at you and the owl captain and clearly sent the âdonât encourage himâ message to you indirectly. Surely, todayâs match was filled with many surprisesâHinataâs feint attack, Kageyamaâs unexpected dump, and even the one youâve been waiting for; Hinata and Kageyamaâs new quick. Both you and Yachi instantly screamed in pure gleeâhugging each other in excitement.
âYou did it! You did it!â Yachi even cheered and jumping. âNice kill, Hinata! Kageyama-kun!â
âNice toss, Kageyama-kun! Nice kill, Shoyo-kun! You two are amazing!â You added, grinning widelyâthe two have been practicing hard for three weeks, and those three weeks of cold-shoulder towards each other too. It was putting quite a strain but now, the two were finally back in action.
The two thrusted their fists to you and Yachi in replyâyou two were probably the happiest ever currently.
And the excitement only lasts for a few minutes because they nailed it one time, but not so for another. Probably just luck, still itâs happiness thoughâthey needed to practice more, however it wouldnât be a problem for the two.
This also could be count as Karasunoâs lucky dayâNishinoya and Azumaneâs back attack pulled off perfectly although itâs still out. The libero, of course, was very much frustrated. The synchro-attack worked and you swore Tanaka was crying out of happiness and relief because he could score comfortably.
âTanaka-san, nice kill!â you cheered, which made him perked up and then laughing in victory.
âThanks, [Name]-chan!â
From all the matches youâve watched, Karasuno clearly made a difference in this oneâtheyâre in their top shape. When the score reached 18 for either team, a technical timeout was commenced. Both you and Yachi immediately worked on distributing water bottles and towels.
âGood work, Tanaka-san, Nishinoya-san!â you said, handing them their water bottles.
âRyu!â Nishinoya suddenly gripped his chest tightly. âOur manager just praises us!â
âIâm feeling blessed, Noya-san!â Tanaka replied, mimicking the liberoâand here you thought the heat maybe started getting into them. You panicked for absolutely no reason and then decided to excuse yourself.
âGood work today, Tsukishima-kun,â Tsukishima nodded and muttered a thank you in reply, taking the water bottle from your hand.
ââŠIs there a way to make your finger stays in place while doing one-touch?â now youâre surprised because he made an attempt to ask first, however you didnât let it show because you knew how it would piss him off.
âYou could tape it to made it stiff enough to receive one-touch,â you suggested in the end. The taller boy hummed in reply before giving you the water bottle back so he could return to the match.
The next match wasnât going wellâfor the other team that is. You noticed how Bokuto seemed to be agitated and rash with his movesâhe almost hit his teammate with his serve, demanding tosses from Akaashi, and finally, third timeâs the charm, when he failed scoring from hitting the net instead. Another score for Karasuno, who managed to turn the match to their favor for the leading score of 20.
âW-was that a block?â Yachi questioned.
âNoâŠâ Shimizu replied, rather taken aback by the event. âIt didnât seem to make it over the net, so it was spike miss,â
âBokuto-san, I mean #4âs movement is also unnatural,â you commented, making the two managers turned to look at you. âHeâs been rushing things and has been on the edge ever since the time-out.â
âNow that youâre talking about itâŠâ Shimizu nodded in agreement.
âAkaashi, donât toss to me anymore!â Bokuto exclaimed, which sounded extremely out of place in the middle of a volley match. Sure, it not only confuses you but your whole team even Coach Ukai and Takeda-sensei.
âDo you know about this, [Name]-chan?â Yachi asked and you shook your head immediately.
âNo, this is the first time Iâve seen Bokuto-san acts like that,â you answered. âAnd it looks like the teamâs already used to this.â
True to your words, the team played like usual as if nothing happenedâBokuto only stared and follow the ball dazedly while the other working to attack and defend. Whatâs more amazing, with the lack of Bokutoâs participating theyâre just as strongâsomething you would expect from a powerhouse school.
It caught your team off guard for a bit, however on the other hand, Tsukishima also wasnât fazed a bitâcould be seen from how he managed to shut out an incoming spike from #7. If Karasuno scored another, it would be deuce and a chance to turn the tables.
âNice block, Tsukishima-kun!â you exclaimed, earning a glance and nod from the said boy.
When Asahi went for a usual serve rather than jump-serve, you understood he didnât want to mess up their chance at winning. Fukurodaniâs libero received in cleanly and Akaashi immediately went for a high-toss. Noticing how Tsukishima rushed towards the left, you knew your team lowered their guard.
âThe left! Donât let it open!â you yelled almost instinctively. Yachiâs soul jumped out of her body from your sudden loud voice, even Coach Ukai and Takeda-sensei was taken aback for a few seconds. Bokuto blew the blocker away because theyâre only 1.5 block, itâs not even enough to had a one-touch. He killed it with a straight shot down the court and Fukurodani won with two points leading.
Disappointment flared in your teamâfrom the ones on the court, the ones watching from the sidelines, even Takeda-sensei. Coach Ukai could only sigh, Shimizu resumed with her notes, and Yachi felt her shoulders slumped. You smiled bitterly at the turn out events.
âWhoo! Ace!â
âYouâre so cool!â
âNothing beats the ace in the end!â
Fukurodaniâs team members started throwing compliments and it made you blinked in confusionâmoreover, Kaori and Yukie even jumped in to join.
âBirds of prey!â
âYour hairâs like a great-horned owl!â
Was that supposed to be a compliment
âOtohaku-sanâŠ!â the call was in a form of a hissed whisper and unexpectedly came from Akaashi himself. The message he sent to you was clear, âplease, help us this timeââyou replied indirectly with pointing to yourself with a look of disbelief present on your face.
âMe!? What should I say!?â
âAnything. Just praise him.â
Probably taking a bit pity for the setter, Sawamura nodded to your direction and gave you a smile of reassurance. You wanted to cry from how compassionate heâs beingâbless his beautiful soul. That and the look of doneness and a little pleading from Fukurodaniâs team was extremely hard to reject.
âY-Youâre amazing! Nothing less from top ace of Japan!â You wanted to slap yourself from the poor excuse of praise. Thankfully it seemed to work magic because Bokuto was instantly revived back to his cheerful and boisterous persona.
âIâm the best afterall!!â he cheered, laughing in victory. âHey, hey, hey!â
Meanwhile, Akaashi took his sweet time to get off the court to fetch his drink and towel. Although, he did give you slight a bow of gratefulness. In the end, itâs losses all the way for Karasuno, however they acquired several weapons to fight on the national courtâitâs not overall a loss because they also gained something new in exchange.
â[Name]-chan! Iâm the best, right!?â
âYou sure are, Bokuto-san.â
âStop bothering Otohaku-san, Bokuto-san.â

â· SUMMARY â¶
A new special move!
The third day of summer training camp and the temperature was still rising. Under the cool shade of the tree upon the hill, you, Shimizu, and Yachi were preparing cool electrolyte drinks for the team. Usually, you three done it in the gym but experiencing how hot the weather was, you three decided brought the bottles uphill so the team could drink immediately in order to avoid dehydration.
âThatâs a different type of brand you use, [Name]-chan.â Shimizu commented, seeing a different colored package of electrolyte drink in your hand.
âOh, Kageyama-kun usually used this particular brand,â you replied, pouring the powder into the bottle and turn the lid close, then you shook the bottle so it would mix thoroughly. Your upperclassman hummed in understanding from your answer.
While it was the third day of training, itâs also marked the three weeks of Kageyama and Hinata not talking to each other even though it didnât hinder their practice. It worried you a bit, but you knew the two of them would talk eventually.
âGreat work,â you said, offering the bottle to Kageyama when he and the rest of the boys arrived uphill. He rasped out a thank you before immediately downing the drink.
âHinata-kun, this is yours!â
âThank you!â
You purposely be the one to delivered the bottle straight to the personâHinata was keeping a quite distance from Kageyama and you didnât want to force the orange-haired boy to get closer with the raven-haired setter.
âWuaah, itâs nice and cool,â Hinata sighed in content, placing the bottle upon his cheekâenjoying the coolness radiating from it. After satisfied in cooling down his face, he soon downed the drink. Now that you think, you rarely talk to Hinata these days with him busy with his practice.
â[Name]-san, is your arm okay?â ah, he must be referring to the long cut on your arm.
âItâs already a month, Hinata-kun, itâs healed but it does leave a scar,â you lifted your arm, showing a faint lighter line present on your skin where your wound previously at.
âOh, sorry,â frowns donât suit Hinata at allâheâs a bright ball of beaming energy, a warm figure who could lit your day in an instant. Itâs his nature, and seeing him becoming dejected from the start of the day was worrying.
âItâs fine, Hinata-kun, itâs not your fault anyway. It was an accident,â you dismissed his apology. âAnd if you need anything, just call out for me, okay? Iâll do my best to help you.â
You didnât know what force that made you say those words, but you know you couldnât take it backâyou didnât intend too anyway. Hinata always worked hard by himself, so you want to support him as much as possible. The orange haired boy looked taken a back before a giving you that infamous wide, sunny grin.
âOkay! And call me Shoyo, then! I call you by your first name so itâs fair if you call me like that too!â
âAlright, then, Shoyo-kun.â
.
.
The temperature was still risingâthe burning hot atmosphere exhausted your boys even further than before. It would get rough, both for their body and mind eventually. You could feel your skin pricklingâthe tension was rising faster than before, tiredness building up, and sooner or later it would get to them.
âDamn it!â you gripped on your hand a little tighter after hearing Hinataâs scream of frustration. He failed to get the ball over the net because he lost in terms of strength with Lev. For the past three days, he couldnât hit any ball comfortably, and with the battle of height always looming over him he had nothing to fight it with.
The match continuedâNishinoya tossed the ball perfectly, and then Kageyama went up to made a toss. Hinata, noticing there was a chance for a quick immediately jumped. Even though the ball barely being hit, it still got over the net and fell on the opposite court.
âYou held back, didnât you!?â his upperclassmenâs praises went over his head as Hinata yelled in anger at Kageyama.
âHeld back?â the raven-haired setter also didnât like the approach, glaring back menacingly. âMe? With volleyball?â
Thankfully before a fight could break, Takeda-sensei already asked for a time-outâwith that, at least the two could cool down for a bit and not causing ruckus on the court in the middle of a match.
âThat wasnât the falling toss!â Hinataâs next words, caught you off guard. He noticed somethingâs different with the toss? It looked the same to you.
âIt wasnât?â Takeda-sensei questioned.
âI mean, looking back, it technically may not have been.â Coach Ukai answered, a thumb under his chin. âI think what just happened is that the toss right now wasnât like the falling tosses heâs been getting, but more of a parabola.â
It clicked in your mindâthe abrupt change suddenly made sense. âDoes that mean Kageyama-kun is trying to get Shoyo-kun to hit the ball no matter what?â
âItâs on purpose?â Yachi turned to look at you.
âBut what for?â Shimizuâs brows furrowed in confusion.
âHinata hasnât hit a spike comfortably for a while now,â Coach Ukai was the one who answered to their question. âThatâs pretty stressful for a spiker. Kageyama might have subconsciously been worried that Hinataâs might not play as well because of that.â
You frowned in worry, seeing how Hinata still rooted on his spot despite Tanakaâs attempt to dragged him off the court. And it also worried you that Kageyama was looking utterly dejectedâmaybe he realized for a moment that he pulled his punches. Thankfully it was only a momentâeverything was resolved rather quickly and practice resumed.
.
.
After practice at night, you found yourself helping Bokuto, Kuroo, and Akaashi in the third gym. The owl captain immediately dragged you away as soon as the last practice was over (you swore you could hear Tanaka and Nishinoyaâs screams of fury), so here you were, throwing balls to Akaashi so he could toss it to Bokuto. Surprisingly, Tsukishima was present as wellânow, heâs learning to block with Kurooâs guidance.
âOh? Tsukki, [Name]-chan, did you bring a friend today?â Bokuto suddenly asked, which confused the two of you.
âPardon?â Tsukishima questioned.
When you threw a look over your shoulder, you immediately took a notice of an extremely familiar figure with orange hair by the door. Calling out, you gave him a smile. âShoyo-kun!â
â[N-Name]-san!â
âWhat happened to your partner?â Tsukishima asked.
âKageyamaâs practicing on his own again,â Hinata answered. âI was trying to get Kenma to throw me tosses, but he ran away after the fifth one.â
âItâs amazing that you got Kenma to even give you five during practice,â Kuroo remarked.
âSo, please let me practice with you!â another surprised for you because Lev showed up and asking the same thing.
âLev!â
âOh, Hinata,â the silver-haired boy then noticed you and immediately waved his hands enthusiastically. âOtohaku-chan!! Youâre here too!!â
âLev, quit flirting with the manager and I thought you were practicing receives with Yaku.â Kuroo said and of course, the mention of Nekomaâs libero, Lev stiffened.
âHe said I was doing well today, so he let me go!â
From the looks of it, it was no doubt he ran away while Yaku was having a bathroom break or something else that required him for leaving the gym. But Kuroo, being the lenient and laid-back captain he is, dismissed it.
âWell, whatever,â he sighed. âThen, we have the right number of people, so letâs play three-on-three. [Name], youâre in charge of the score.â
Nodding in understanding, you pushed the score board closer and changed the names aboveâcats and owl, it reminded you of the two captainâs characteristics. You were fine in looking over the match, but this match was quite ridiculous. Thankfully, youâre not the only to think so.
âUm, isnât this just a bit unbalanced?â Akaashi questioned. He was in the same team with Bokuto and Hinata, whereas the opposite team was clearly having more advantage in heightâKuroo, Lev, and Tsukishima are all above 185cm. Still with the disadvantage he got, Hinata was excited for sure.
The match was interesting to watchâeven with the lack of extra height for Hinataâs team, they were still on par with Tsukishimaâs team. But soon it was stopped by Yukie and Kaoriâs appearance.
âIf you donât wrap soon, the cafeteria will close and you wonât get any dinner.â Yukie informed. âOh? [Name]-chan, youâre here too? That explains why you donât show up for dinner.â
Frustration was clear to Hinata because he clearly enjoyed the match and he didnât want it to end, however, with Kurooâs reassurance that they would continue this tomorrow, he was back bouncing on his feet. You couldnât help but smile at the captainâs attentiveness.
âThank you for cheering Shoyo-kun up,â you said, as the seven of you walked towards the cafeteria. Yukie and Kaori said they had to handle other things first so they couldnât accompany you (it was hard for them to let you go with the boys). âTodayâs not a good day for him so this match definitely cheers him up.â
âItâs nothing, and we probably have to apologize to you too,â Kuroo remarked. âBokutoâs dragging you here, you stuck with us, and missed dinner. Bokuto, you have an apology to make!â
âThatâs right, Bokuto-san, you made Otohaku-san missed dinner.â Akaashi piped up. âTomorrow she has to wake up early to prepare breakfast, too.â
As if struck by lightning, Bokuto froze and turned stiffly to look at you before he went on a full apology-modeâas far as dropping on his knees, taking your hands in his, and begging for apology. You laughed nervously, but you knew he was sincere with it.
âIâm sorry, [Name]-chan!! Iâll make it up to you!! Do I need to replace you handling breakfast tomorrow!?â
âN-no, itâs alright, I will be fine and you donât have to apologize, Bokuto-san. I donât mind helping you practice.â
âBokuto-san, youâre making Otohaku-san uncomfortable.â
âHave my back for once, Akaashi!!â
.
.
Now that you think of it, your after-practice time was automatically reserved for the third gym. Bokuto would bound towards you, asking for your help as soon as youâre done with your managerial duties. With your nod, he then reached out for your hand and pulled you to ran towards the third gym.
Akaashi already informed you to just dismissed his captain, but you found yourself couldnât possibly rejected Bokutoâs invitationâespecially when his eyes practically shining, you didnât have a heart to ruin it. That goes for Daichi also, he even offered to talk to Bokuto about it if it bothers you. You were grateful for the twoâs offer, still if you could help, you want to be helpful as possible.
Itâs probably the third time you helped them practice by throwing balls and keeping an eye on the score board. Well you did your usual managerial duties as wellârefilling the water bottles, giving them towels, sometimes wiping the floor when it became too slippery. Kuroo mentioned that you didnât have to do it since your work hour was over and him, Bokuto, Akaashi, and Lev werenât from your team.
Again, you dismissed itâitâs not a heavy duty, anyway. In between water break, Tsukishima asked about why on earth Kuroo wanted to help them when they would end up being rival in the end.
The captain cleared his throat. âI want to make the Battle at the Garbage Dump a reality. Itâs what our coach wants more than anything. But who knows how much longer our coach is going to continue coaching? So, because of that, we need you guys to keep winning too.â
Overall, you understood Kurooâs reason, but there was something that piqued your curiosity.
âUhm, I know this question might sound strange, but, what is Battle at the Garbage Dump?â you asked.
âOh, thatâs right, we havenât explained anything to Yachi-san and [Name]-san!â Hinata said.
âTo put it simple, itâs like destined match between Karasuno and Nekoma.â Tsukishima explained. âItâs been going since the previous Coach Ukaiâs time.â
âKarasuno and Nekoma will climb up until they could go to nationals and then will meet up on the orange court.â Kuroo grinned, reaching up to ruffle your hair lightly.
âThatâs⊠so cool,â you muttered. You couldnât find the exact words to express the awe youâre feeling. A match in the orange court between destined rivals, itâs almost like straight up from a manga or a movie. Other teams could research but playing against a team that knows you really well is going to be an absolute thrillâprobably the best match Karasuno could get.
âRight, right!?â Hinata went up to you and asked excitedly.
âCome on. Letâs get back to practice!â Kuroo informed and all of you immediately went to your assigned place.
Practice went onâstill between the Owl and Cat group. When Bokuto had to score against someone tall like Lev and Tsukishima, he didnât kill the ball instead he hit it purposely against the blockâreturning it to the team for a more proper toss. Knowing how Hinata was hungry for development, surely he wouldnât miss this.
After Bokuto managed to kill the ball with an intense straight towards the back line, he instantly approached him to ask about it. Soon, the game continued. This time, it was Lev who went for the score but managed to be soft-blocked by Akaashi. The last ball went to Hinata and you witnessed an absolutely underhanded way of blocking.
âAh! Hey!â Bokuto screeched, also feeling the unfairness. âYou guys are playing dirty!â
Hinata had to face three blockers above 185 cm with not a good toss.
âNowhere to aim,â you muttered, narrowing your eyes in slight annoyance.
However, Hinata intended to face themâhe hit the ball to Levâs fingertips and it flew over before dropping to the inner-side of the opposite court. He jumped high enough and landed on his back instead.
âShoyo-kun, youâre amazing!â running and kneeling beside him, you praised. Technically, youâre supposed to check on him but it flew over your mind for a second. âItâs an amazing block-out!â
âDidâŠyou actually aim for that?â Kuroo questioned in disbelief. âThat was an amazing wipe!â
âWell, I did aim for Levâs fingertips.â
âWhat!?â Lev took a full offense in this.
Still, Bokuto was impressed by the lack of fear the younger had. The owl captain was showering him with praises as the rest of you watched from the sidelines. It went well until Bokuto proposed a âspecial moveââwhich made almost everyone dropped their beliefs, Hinata seemed to be excited by it though.

â· SUMMARY â¶
What do people need besides pride?
âOh, Tsukishima-kun, great work today,â Youâre kind of expecting bumping to Tsukishima on your way towards the gymâheâs always been the first one to returned to the sleeping quarters because most of the boys chose to stay behind and practiced more. You, yourself, decided to return to the gym to watch the other practice or maybe lending a hand.
Tsukishima only nodded as a reply to your words. You didnât think much of it since itâs his personality. Continuing your steps, you didnât expect him saying anything,
âWhy arenât you asking me if Iâm practicing or not?â halting your way back to the gym, you turned to face the taller boyânoticing him already looking at you, you know he was waiting for an explanation.
Between many questions thrown about how why he wasnât in free practice, youâre one of a few persons who didnât bring it up. You didnât comment much about his routine in sticking just to practice matches during training camp, didnât nag him for every little thing like Hinata does, itâs refreshing for Tsukishima but also confused him a little.
âWell, it seems youâre in the middle of thinking about something,â you replied, looking at him straight in the eye. âThat and you probably knew what you should do, thatâs why youâre on your way to the third gym, right?â
Tsukishima had his eyes widened slightly, before narrowing. âAre you some kind of psychic or something? Itâs beginning to creep me out.â
âSeeing how sarcastic you still are, youâre in tip top shape,â you deadpanned, folding your arms across your chest. âAnd itâs called observation. You want to take a turn, and the turn only led to the third gym.â
Thereâs a silence fell between of youâit wasnât uncomfortable for you however for Tsukishima it shook his nerve a bit. This was probably the first heâs talking to you more than a sentence since the two of you merely shared important information in a conversation. The once dark surroundings became brighter the moment the moon peeked out between the clouds.
âI donât exactly know your reason, but I know itâs serious because you kept mulling over it.â You decided to continue. âWeâre not going to pry on anything. At least I know you like volleyball because if youâre not then you wonât be joining the club.â
âWhy do people still trying when they know that thereâs always someone above them?â Tsukishima asked, you noticed the grip on his towel tightening until his knuckles were taut.
âBecause if you lose, at least you lose after a fight,â you replied without hesitation. âPeople have pride to uphold, Tsukishima-kun.â
The taller blonde didnât expect your bold and borderline raw answerâhe didnât accept it immediately but he found himself considering it almost automatically.
.
.
The very next day, you sitting down beside Shimizu and Yachi as you watched the match between Karasuno and Fukurodani. Despite being a simple-minded person, Bokuto is a threat when heâs standing on the courtâliving to his title as top five ace of Japan. The ball hit the ground with a loud echo after Bokuto killed it, successfully forming a cross.
âEekâŠâ Yachi commented, trembling slightly after witnessing the sheer force of the spike. âThat #4 is really intense again today.â
âHe is one of the top aces in Japan,â you replied, smiling nervously.
âSensei,â Coach Ukai called out, referring for a time out with your advisorâs cue to the referee.
While the time out was commenced, both Yachi and Shimizu began to distribute the water bottles and towelsâyou couldnât join them because Coach Ukai asked you to stay, so here you were, facing the boys as they circled around to listen to the coach.
âEven if youâre not able to stop #4âs spikes, at least try to touch it.â
âRight!â
âWe donât have to stop it?â surely Tsukishimaâs question stole the teamâs attention, but the said person didnât even acknowledge the stares heâs receiving.
âWell, if youâre able to actually shut the ball out, thereâs nothing better.â Coach Ukai answered. âAnd, Otohaku, about the straights and crosses?â
âOh,â you replied dumbly, shoulders tensed as pairs of eyes immediately focused on your figure. Swallowing hard, you tried to make your voice as steady as possible. âYou could notice where Bo- #4 is aiming actually, so read block will be enough to stop him. Still, if you want to shut him out them, you have to put more force in your block so you wonât be blown away. And a guard at least one for crosses and straight routes.â
âAlright!â
The moment your boys turned to be back at the court, you sighed in reliefâthis was actually the first time you gave the team advice in a match. Coach Ukai patted your back and gave you a smile, it was enough for you to be proud of yourself.
Now you resumed watching the game while Yachi took a note about blocks after Shimizu explained it to her. Bokuto was already jumping for a spike, but he instantly reverted to a feint. Shivers ran down your spine when you noticed Tsukishima went up for a blockâhe was clearly trying to kill it. The intensity of it made your eyes widened.
âWow, I totally thought they were going to come with a full-on attack there,â Takeda-sensei gasped in surprise. âTo think it was actually a feint. I guess thatâs what you get with an ace that went to the nationals.â
âI did not!â you knew Akaashi mustâve said something to make Bokuto keen on arguing back. âI just got around it! And really well! I got around their block! [Name]-chan! Tell him I got around it!â
Well, you surely didnât know you were going to be involved somehow.
âDonât look for her support, Bokuto-san.â Akaashi deadpanned and gave you an apologetic look.
âYou let your guard down.â Washio added, completely shutting down the ace.
âUgh! Yeah, yeah! Iâm sorry!â
Finally, the troublesome baby bird came out of his shell, which was something youâve been waiting for.

â· SUMMARY â¶
Itâs finally summer vacation training camp!
After the fight, Hinata and Kageyama werenât really talking to each otherâCoach Ukai even separated them during practice, Hinata in team B while Kageyama in the other. When practice was over, Kageyama was working on his tosses with Yachiâs help while Hinata drive elsewhere with his bike to practice on his own.
âAh, heâs with my grandpa.â You asked where on earth did Hinata go, and thatâs your answer from Coach Ukai. Apparently, Hinata was training with the previous Coach Ukai at their home. That left you with managerial duties and some extras like buying supplies for the training camp.
The injury you received of course was noticeable by the teamâit almost send both Tanaka and Nishinoya into rampage, but you quickly said itâs not a problem and it would heal in no time. While you could make up some excuse for Daichi, Sugawara, and Ennoshita, you couldnât with Shimizu. With a stern look from, you finally spilled the beans and she promised not to tell anyone.
While Kageyama wasnât talking to Hinata, heâs definitely talking to you more nowâalong with walking you home if you chose to stay at practice longer. With that, you learn more about him and how heâs undoubtedly a volley ball dork through and through.
The time you had to depart from school to Tokyo for the training camp at night, he offered to picked up from your house so you could walk together to school.
âC-can I sit next to youâŠ?â the raven-haired boy asked. Of course, you agreed wholeheartedly since Yachi will be sitting next to Shimizu and sitting alone didnât seem to be fun. At first, you talked about some mundane things and watched a few videos saved in your phone before falling asleep leaning to each other.
âKAGEYAMA!!â
âHOW DARE YOU STEAL A HEADSTART!â
And it incurred the wrath of both Tanaka and Nishinoya when they realized. Thankfully, Ennoshita was quick to shut them up by slapping them on the head and Daichi glared at them menacingly for causing a ruckus.
.
.
âWell, the grand guest finally arrived,â when you carried the big bag filled with your essentials outside the bus, it was immediately gone from your hands. Kuroo plucked it from your grip so he could carry it instead, sending you a small smile.
âKuroo-san, itâs been a while.â Greeting the older boy, you stepped to the ground.
âItâs nice knowing you stick to your promise,â
âWell, itâs impossible for me to not join the training camp. And,â you looked up to the building upon the stairs. When it was in Nekoma High School before, this time training camp was held at different areaâhowever, you didnât complain because even during summer, the place was cool with many trees surrounding and breeze swept by. âWhy are we in a different place? I thought itâs being held only in one place.â
Kuroo hummed. âItâs a tradition for training camp during summer vacation happened in Shinzen. This place is cool, so itâs great. Why? You wanted to be cooked under the sun instead?â
âIâd rather not.â
âHinata! Did you grow any taller!? Oh! Otohaku-chan!! Youâre looking pretty as always!!â
âLev, shut up.â Kenma scolded.
.
.
â[NAME]-CHAN!! Make sure to cheer for me, alright!!â
âShe wonât, Bokuto-san. And please donât call her by her first name when she didnât mention you could.â
Thank goodness, Akaashi had a say because you didnât know how to reply that without wanting to upset Bokuto in the process. The first match was Karasuno against Fukurodani and it didnât go wellâyour team splendidly didnât sync because everyone went to try the new moves their practicing, resulting they had to take a new kind of penalty.
Along with Yachi, you watch as everyone sprinting uphill. And it didnât happen only one time, every time they lost a match, they had to do one before walking down and downing their drinks. It went until the last practiceâwhich they splendidly managed to lost.
âHitoka-chan, could you look over Kageyama-kun and Hinata-kun in my place,â you whispered to your best friend, referring to the duo whoâs clearly itching for practice but couldnât exactly say it clearly as they still in bad terms with each other.
âYeah! I was thinking about that too!â the two of you nodded in determination.
âUhm, [Name]-san,â Yamaguchi called out to you, rubbing his nape sheepishly. âI want to practice serve, could you watch over?â
Smiling you nodded, âSure Yamaguchi-kun! Let me get my notes first, okay?â
The taller boy blinked in confusion. âEh? Notes? What for?â
âTo look over your progress overall,â you kneeled down to put on your outdoor shoes. âIâll be back as soon as possible.â
âO-oh, okay.â Yamaguchi could only reply that as he didnât know how exactlyâhe knew he shouldnât be flustered or feeling special, but he couldnât help to feel warmth bloom in his chest. He knew you were an attentive person, and itâs nice to know that applied to everyone on the team even though youâre mostly stick with Kageyama, Hinata, or Yachi.
Jogging towards the sleeping quarters, you couldâve arrived faster to pick up your notebook if Bokutoâs call didnât halt you from doing so.
âOOH!! [NAME]-CHAN!!â he called out from the third gym. You noticed that he wasnât alone, Kuroo and Akaashiâs also there and surprisingly Tsukishima. From that, you concluded that Kuroo must have something to do with itâprobably taunting the blonde into joining. âCould you throw us some balls!?â
âEh?â you blinked. âBut, I have to get some notes for practice-â
âJust a few, come on!â Bokuto didnât even give you a chance to explainâinstead, he dragged you by the wrist.
So here you were, arranging an apology speech for Yamaguchi while throwing some balls for Akaashi to set. That and giving Lev some glances to check if heâs still alive or not on the floor. The setter already apologized to you in Bokutoâs place, but you immediately dismissed it since you didnât mind either.
âGeh!? Otohaku-chan!?â Lev must be exhausted seeing as he barely noticed youâre in the same area.
It amazed you on how Bokuto still managed to kill the spikes viciously after series of practice match all dayâhis stamina is top-notch, nothing less from one of the best players in the country. Watching Bokutoâs spikes meaning also watching Tsukishima tried to block them.
Not once did he managed to successfully shut one out, but with Kurooâs finally joining the cross was killed almost in an instant. While Bokuto is a formidable opponent in attacking, then Kuroo would be terrifying in defense. No wonder Coach Ukai was making him a great example for a solid blocker.
Tsukishima is indeed smart and calm as he read the opponentâs movement, but,
âYour blocks are pretty weak.â You flinched as Bokuto blurted out what you had in mind regarding Tsukishimaâs blockâand it sure pissed the taller blonde off. âYour arms are so frail that Iâm scared Iâm gonna break them. You need to stop the ball like you mean it!â
âIâm still a growing boy!â Tsukishima replied, clearly trying to hide his annoyance. âIâve just started gaining muscles and getting taller!â
âTalk like that, and the little shrimp is gonna hog all the glory.â Kuroo remarked. âYou guys play the same position, right?â
Ouch, you couldnât help but thought. That hits the sore spot.
âI donât think it can be helped,â Tsukishima said with a smile after a few seconds of silence. âThe difference in natural talent between me and Hinata is too great.â
Before Kuroo could argue, the players of Nekoma began piling into the gym and Tsukishima finally managed to excuse himself successfully this time.
âLooks like you stepped on a mine, Kuroo-san,â Akaashi commented.
âYou pissed him off,â Bokuto dragged. âAt long last, Kuroo-kun, the master of provocation, has failed.â
âWell, I wouldnât have thought that.â The black-haired captain sighed.
âThought what?â Bokuto questioned.
âKarasunoâs shrimp is definitely strange and a threat, but in terms of technique and experience heâs like a baby bird. Plus, heâs really short. I never wouldâve thought guy with glasses, whoâs far taller and much smarter, wouldnât only think theyâre not equal but actually think the shrimp is above his level.â
Sighing for the second time, he rubbed the back of his head before giving you an apologetic look. âSorry, I pissed off your middle blocker.â
âI donât think you pissed him off,â you couldnât exactly say that itâs fine because itâs not your place to do so. âBut you did hit a sore spot, Kuroo-san.â
âOtohaku-san, shouldnât you get going? Weâve hold you long enough from you whatever you want to do.â Akaashi reminded.
âThatâs right, then Iâll excuse myself.â You bowed down and walked towards the exitâyou immediately retrieve your note before finally helping Yamaguchi with his serves after being held for some time.
.
.
The next day, youâre helping Eri, Kaori, and Yukie cutting watermelons given by the parents from Shinzen High School. Surely, on this hot summer, sweet and cool watermelons would make anyoneâs mouth began watering. It was also a great short break for the boys as they enjoy the watermelon while sitting on the grassy hill beside the gym.
âDo you want extras, senpai?â and just like other managers, you distributed the watermelons while asking if the boys wanted seconds or not. This time, youâre offering a few thatâs still on your tray to Tanaka, Daichi, and Asahi.
âOoh, donât mind if I do, [Name]-chan!â Tanaka reached out for another slice.
âMe too,â after him, Daichi also took a slice from your tray.
âIâm okay with mine for now,â Asahi politely rejected your offer. âHow about you eat some too? Itâs quite a hot day.â
âIâll go it after everyoneâs seconds are done,â you remarked, intending to circle around the separate crowds for the nth time but Tanaka quickly interrupted.
âEverybody has their share already! Iâm sure they donât mind.â Your upperclassman commented. âBesides, our beautiful manager deserves to have rest!â
âSomehow, it doesnât correlateâŠâ Asahi muttered, smiling nervously.
At the end, you ended up sitting down beside Asahi and munching on a slice of watermelon. Your upperclassman was right for one thingâenjoying the fruit in a hot summer day was a great way to cool down, you instantly felt refreshed.
âSorry, by the way.â The four of you looked up to the call, seeing Kuroo approaching and out of blue apologizing. Surely, your upperclassmen were confused with this except you.
âAbout what?â Daichi questioned.
âI think I might have pissed off your glasses guy yesterday.â
âWhat?â
To make it clearer, the cat captain sat down with his back towards you and began explaining the situation occurred the other dayâyou admired how both parties didnât once interrupt nor getting things heated up, they knew this wasnât something big and could be resolved by just a simple apology.
âWow⊠Tsukishima actually helped out with free practice even if you cornered him into it,â Daichi hummed in understanding.
âYour manager too, but thatâs Bokutoâs idea,â you didnât know why on earth Kuroo decided to brough it up but seeing your upperclassmen were nonchalant about it (except maybe Tanaka, though he was quickly being shut up by Daichi) itâs also not a big deal.
âSo, what did you say?â
âI provoked him and said he was going to lose to your shrimp over there.â
âIâve definitely noticed that Tsukishima seems to feel inferior to Hinata somehow.â Asahi remarked, probably remembering a few words Tsukishima said to him.
âIâm not sure if this is relevant, but my sister mentioned someone tall named Tsukishima also joined the volleyball team during the Little Giant times.â Tanaka mentioned, surely this is new to all of you because Tsukishima wasnât the type of person who talks about himself much.
Daichiâs head perked up. âTsukishima has an older brother?â
âOh, Iâm not sure.â Tanaka quickly replied. âThey couldâve just had the same last name and not be related. Do you know anything about this, [Name]-chan?â
âI donât, but if I know, I think itâs not my place to tell since Tsukishima-kun would undoubtedly be annoyed because of it,â you answered, which made Tanaka hummed in agreement.
âHey, weâre about to start!â Sugawara called out.
You didnât know about Tsukishima having a sibling or not, however,
âThis is just a club. Why do you put so much into it? Itâs because you put so much into it that you suffer later.â
You couldnât help but think itâs somehow related to what he muttered the night before.
.
.
Yet again when the sky softly bathed in orange glow, Karasuno had to pay their losing with penaltyâyou along with Yachi and Shimizu also Takeda-sensei and Coach Ukai watched as the boys bolted uphill accompanied by yelling (well, this was mostly Hinata, Kageyama, Tanaka, and Nishinoya).
âHere,â you offered a water bottle for Kageyama. He couldnât even reply a âthank youâ from how harshly he was panting and you could only sympathize with himâmore than five matches in a day plus penalties were rough.
âThanks,â the raven-haired boy finally rasped after downing probably a half of the water from the bottle. You also handed him a towel so he could wipe away the sweat dripping down from his temple.
âSo, howâs training going?â you finally asked, which triggered a sighed from him.
âNo progress.â The frustration was getting to him definitelyâwhile you were only watching for some time since Yachiâs already there to help him, you understood that Kageyama failed more than he succeeded. He knew he was getting nowhere and time was short, if heâs not geared up it will be a problem.
âI canât give you any helpful advice but I think you should practice under Coach Ukaiâs watch,â you mentioned, and Kageyama listened carefully. âHe probably has ways that could help you. You couldnât do this on your own Kageyama-kun, you need guidance.â
Nodding firmly, he replied. âYeah.â
âI canât wait to see your toss,â you then added, giving him a smile. âItâs going to be amazing for sure. You did pinpoint toss to Hinata all this time.â
The boy fell silent for a while, and you almost regretted saying those wordsâdid you somehow step on a landmine? Did you piss him off? Did you touch the nerve-
âI promise to get done and youâll see it.â The negative thoughts were gone from your mind as you stare at those blue eyes filled with determination. You found yourself smiling at his promise.
âI will be waiting then.â
.
.
âSensei, what do you think of Tsukishima?â Coach Ukai asked your advisor while the five of you were watching the match between Karasuno and Ubugawa.
âI think heâs taking this seriously,â Takeda-sensei answered, although rather confused from the question.
âHow about you, Otohaku?â and you didnât expect to be involve in the conversation also.
âUhm⊠heâs doing his work, but lack of effort? I think heâs not giving his all.â you replied but somehow became an unsure question in the end.
âYouâre right,â Coach Ukai remarked. âI feel like Tsukishima gets a passing grade but never tries for 100%. Iâm not asking for him to become more passionate, but if heâs not going to give his all, Iâm gonna have to change regulars. I need players who can win a match on the court. Heâs the tallest and essential to the team. If Tsukishima could become a strong blocker, our defense level would go up a lot.â
âI see,â Takeda-sensei nodded in understanding.
Not long into the game after Tsukishima served, thereâs a collision between Daichi and Nishinoya for the ballâat first, it was nerve-wracking because if one of them was hurt it could be bad. However, seeing that the two dismissed it as if it was nothing was relieving.
âEveryoneâs so motivated.â Yachi commented.
âEveryoneâs more motivated now than Iâve ever seen them before,â Shimizu frowned in worry. âBut sometimes itâs almost scary. Collisions like the other day can definitely lead to major injuries.â
Another spike went through but received perfectly by Kageyama, the ball bounced to the air and Tanaka was the second one to get it, passing it immediately to Asahi.
âItâs a little short,â you muttered, noticing the ball was hovering near the netâexactly to where Hinata was. From how heâs staring at it, heâs most likely to steal itâbut then he tensed up, snapped his head to the side to give Asahi a stare and stayed in his place in the end.
âLet him know the ball is yours.â
You stared as Asahi successfully killed the ball even with three blockersâgrinning from how he stole a score and holding them team together so it wouldnât become lawless. The attempt was enough for you to let your shoulders relaxed.
âMaybe I didnât need to worry after all.â Shimizu sighed in relief.
Asahi turned to face you, giving you a smile and an outstretched fistâyou immediately returned it with the exact same gesture.

â· SUMMARY â¶
Hinataâs overwhelming greed to growâwill it be a blessing or a curse for the team?
As the temperature rise, so was the tensionâat first you didnât really acknowledge the heaviness present in the air, but now it was suffocating. Your team certainly had it around them at first, however it now increased tenfold after Hinata bumped to Asahi for the ball. The prickling in the air almost felt as if it was scratching your skin.
âI wasnât imagining the tension between Hinata and Kageyama-kun, right?â Yachi asked uncertain, but Shimizu nodded in agreement.
âYeah. But itâs not just Hinata and Kageyama. Ever since Hinata and Azumane bumped into each other, theyâre all on the edge.â
âThat, and Hinata-kun just blurted out what everyoneâs thinking right now,â you added, making the two turned to face you. âHinata-kun wants to rapidly change, if everyone couldnât keep up or made their presence clear in front of himâŠâ
Theyâll be eaten by that overwhelming greed the orange-haired boy has.
.
.
When the penalty was over, you quickly distributed the water bottles and towels with Yachi while Shimizu handled the notes. The absence of Hinata, Kageyama, and Sugawara were clear because as soon as they finished their penalty, the third year asked them to have a private chat outside the gym.
âAzumane-san, you felt that, right?â you asked the older boy, handing his water bottle. âThe feeling of being eaten up.â
âYeah,â Somehow, Asahi didnât really surprise hearing those words from you. For him, youâre rather differentâmaybe itâs because youâre quite knowledgeable about volleyball and a quite observant person.
âI think you should try putting him in his place,â hearing those rather bold words from you made his eyes widened.
âP-putting him to place!? L-like scolding him? I donât think I can.â
âN-no, just declared out loud that the ball is yours? From what I saw, Hinata-kun is trying to steal that ball away from you. You need to tell let him know that itâs not his.â
Asahi fell silent at first, thinking over and assessed what you just said. He found that youâre rightâitâs aceâs job to get everyone in the team grounded. He gave you a smile and a nod. âYeah, Iâll try. Thank you for the insight, [Name].â
âOh, Hinata-kun, let me see your chin!â Asahi then watched you jogged towards the shorter orange-haired boy.
âHuh? Why?â he asked in confusion.
âYou hit it when youâre doing the diving drills, right? At least let me check if itâs bruising or not.â You bent down to take a closer look, although still keeping a respectful distance from the boy so he wouldnât be having a heart attack.
âA-alright, thank you!â
.
.
Your team didnât stay for too longâonce the last practice of the day was done, all of you were already packing to return to Miyagi. This practice camp was short, but you heard Coach Ukai mentioned that it would be even longer the moment summer vacation startedâat that time, you will be staying around for a week.
Huffing, you lifted up a big luggage with the teamâs necessities and began walking towards the bus in the parking lot. Ennoshita mentioned that if anythingâs too heavy, you should ask for someone in the teamâs helpâhowever you were reluctant, especially after knowing all of them were certainly tired from practice match and diving penalties.
âHere, let me help you,â suddenly, the weight was removed from you. You were greeted with Akaashiâs figure with the bag in hand, you almost felt jealous on how he could carry it with ease.
âThank you, Akaashi-san,â
After that you didnât exchange any word as you approached the bus, but the silence wasnât uncomfortable either.
âSo, how is it being the manager?â his question threw you off guard, not expecting him to start a conversation.
Laughing nervously, you replied. âIt felt like being thrown into a room full of color and being doused in ice bath.â
Once again, you didnât expect him laughing slightly at your metaphor. You cursed the moment you laid your eyes on his figure because how can someone be so goddamn gorgeous from just laughing. Your heart skipped a bit and blood rushed to your face almost instantly.
âI could relate to that,â he hummed. âEspecially having someone eccentric in the team, like Bokuto-san for example.â
âHey, hey, hey, Otohaku-chan!!â As if being called, the mentioned boy jogged towards the two of you. Akaashi put the bag onto the ground after asking if itâs okay to do so. âBe sure to join the summer training camp so you can cheer on me, alright!?â
âThatâs a wrong thing wrangled into one sentence.â Kuroo commented, accompanied by his infamous smirk. âAnd why would you drag other teamâs manager when you already have two?â
âPlease donât request anything weird to Otohaku-san.â Akaashi deadpanned.
âWhat?? Why!? The only one hereâs nice enough to compliment me is Otohaku-chan!!â
âYou pushed her into doing so, Bokuto-san. Otohaku-san, if heâs bothering you feel free to ignore him.â
âAKAASHI!!â
âWell, Bokuto do have something correct, though,â Kuroo folded his arm across his chest. âBe sure to join the summer training camp. The more, the merrier, you know?â
âI will,â you smiled. You had no reason not to joinâa managerâs duty is to help the team grow by letting their mind off doing mundane things, so you would do your best to support your team.
Kurooâs hand reached out, finding itself on your head again and ruffling lightly. âThen weâll be waiting.â
â[Name]-san is already good friends with Fukurodani and Nekomaâs captain,â Ennoshita, who watched the interaction from the sidelines, commented. Sugawara and Sawamura nodded in agreement, smiling proudly. You were known for being rather reserved, but seeing you began to have more friends were a huge development.
âItâs good she begins to open up and make friends, but,â Ennoshite flinched from the murderous atmosphere surrounding Sugawara. âI hope they could limit the physical contact with our dearest manager, though.â
âRight? Theyâre too close to my liking.â Sawamura added, smiling but with menacing intent.
âWhoaa!! Youâre so tall!â as if the world was trying to spite the two, Lev joined into the pictureâhis hand found yours and immediately had them in his grip. âAnd pretty!â
Ennoshita had to refrain Sugawara and Sawamura from murdering the oblivious first year.
.
.
It was quite late at night the moment all of you were back at the school. Assuming it was late, you didnât have any reason to stay longer and need to go home as soon as possible. However, noticing how the gym was lit, both you and Yachi decided to check it outâfinding Kageyama and Hinata were in there with net fully set along with volley cart.
âHuh? You two arenât going home yet?â Yachi asked.
âItâs quite late. You should get some rest instead.â You added, knowing how harsh the practice match and penalties combined together.
âYachi-san, [Name]-san, if you donât mind, could you throw us some balls?â instead of answering, Hinata requested some help.
âHuh? I can do that?â Yachi yelped.
âYou just have to throw the ball above Kageyamaâs head.â Hinata pointed out.
âS-sure, Iâll give it a try.â
âIf youâre tired, switch with me, Hitoka-chan.â You said and she nodded.
Yachi throw ball after ball for Kageyama to toss while Hinata tried to hit itâand he failed. The ball didnât sync at all with him, his movement didnât fully pull out because heâs too focused on the ball. Itâs not just second or third, with every ball being tossed, not once did Hinata successfully spike it.
âOne more time!â Hinata called out, however thereâs no ball this time because they already used it all.
âInstead of practicing an attack weâre not sure youâll ever be able to do, you should be working on the attacks weâve been using as well as serving and blocking!â Kageyama spat.
âBut if this quick doesnât work, thereâs no point in me being on the court!â
âAnd I told you, your will isnât needed for that quick! Iâll give you tosses that wonât be stopped by blocks!â
âBut then Iâll never get better!â Hinata argued.
This is bad, you internally said. Itâs not the usual bickering the two always do.
âThe prelims for the spring tournament start next month! Theyâre right around the corner, what do you think will be an effective weapon for us? A complete quick or an absolutely useless quick!? Huh!?â Kageyama yelled, his hand already clutching onto Hinataâs collar.
âN-no fighting, guys.â Yachi stuttered, trying her best to get situation under control. âCalm down, Kageyama-kun. You, too, HinataâŠâ
âI want to be strong enough to compete by myself!â Of course, the two wouldnât give any spare second to your friendâs pleading. And Hinataâs words seemed to be the trigger that snapped the chord.
âYour selfishness is going to destroy the teamâs balance!â shouting in anger, Kageyama threw the shorter boy to the groundâthe sound that echoed throughout the gym made both you and Yachi winced.
âL-Letâs all be f-friends, o-okay!?â Yachi stuttered.
âStop it you two,â you stated, making sure to said it out loud so it could be heard. âFighting doesnât solve anything.â
Your heart thumping against your chest, your ears were ringing from the adrenaline rushing in your bloodstream. If you or Yachi couldnât do anything, thing would escalate to a bad degreeâthe worst would be fist fight. And that would result the two being suspended from club activities. Separating the two physically wouldnât be a good thing eitherâas much as you want to, youâre a girl and it would be dangerous.
âIâll toss to anyone whoâs essential to winning.â Kageyama declared. âBut I donât think youâre essential to winning right now. And I donât feel any different now.â
âKageyama!!â
Hinata certainly didnât accept those wordsâpicking himself up, he threw himself to Kageyama and clutching on to him.
âDamn it, let go!â
âI wonât let go until you give me a toss!â
The second time Kageyama threw Hinata to the ground full force, you knew you had to stop this somehow. Turning to look at Yachi, whoâs standing behind you, you said, âCall someone, Hitoka-chan. We have to stop them!â
âB-but, what about you [Name]-chan-!?â she yelped, not wanting to leave you alone in a place where two boys were fighting.
âIâll be fine, now go!â Yachi immediately bolted towards the exit to search for anyone whoâs nearânow that left you with the two. âStop it, Kageyama, Hinata!â
âDonât be ridiculous!â
âThat quick was stopped!! Today and during Seijohâs match!â
âAre you trying to say that my toss was a fault!?â
âEnough!â You tried to pry Hinata away from Kageyama, holding onto his arm and pulled it. And it didnât end up good for you. Maybe he was too blinded by anger or desperation or your existence currently didnât exist in his mind, he shoved arm to shook you off.
His elbow hit you right in the stomach, which made you winced in pain and the sheer power you never thought he had thrown to the ground. If itâs only the ground then you wouldnât have any difficulties, but you forgot thereâs a volleyball cart near by and your back just happened to hit that first before the ground.
There will be bruises without a doubt.
Their yelling flew past your mind because the pain from your back and stomach already had your mind occupied. Soon, you heard another yelling and another set of footsteps. Yachi immediately ran and kneeled beside you.
âY-you okay, [Name]-chan!? B-blood! You have blood on your arm!â she yelped, hands trembling.
At the mention of blood, you lifted your arm automaticallyâYachi was right, thereâs a long cut running from your elbow to your wrist. You didnât even feel any pain from it, maybe it was being overshadowed by the pain from your back and stomach even though the cut was dripping blood.
It was a rough night for the four of you.
.
.
âThis will be enough,â you said, making Kageyama stopped on his track to look at you. âMy house is just around the corner. Thank you for walking me home, Kageyama-kun.â
âY-YeahâŠâ he replied in stutters.
You didnât immediately turn your back to him and walked awayâbecause he was shuffling on his feet while looking here and there, you knew he had something else to say. Kageyama isnât the best in pouring his mind into words, thatâs why after knowing that you tried your best to be patient and let him composed himself to talk.
âIs there something you need?â you coaxed, noticing he couldnât get his thoughts straight.
âUh,â Kageyama lifted his hand, finger picking on the band-aid you put upon his cut from where Tanaka punched him. âY-your arm,â
âItâs fine,â showing him the long cut, he stiffened when he rested his eyes on it. âIt stopped bleeding and I already cleaned it so itâs fine.â
Silence fell between the two of you for the second time.
âSorryâŠâ Kageyama finally saidâyou almost didnât hear it from how soft he spoke.
âItâs fine Kageyama-kun, itâs my fault anyway. I shouldâve waited for Tanaka-san instead of trying to stop you two on my own.â You sighed. âIâm worried about you two more, to be honestâŠâ
The raven-haired boy outwardly grimaced at your statement.
âBut, I know everything will fall into place soon,â you quickly added, trying to ease the guilt Kageyama was feeling. âHinata will find a way to have mid-air battles, and you will look for a way to do something with your tosses. Then in the end, everything will connect and Karasuno will have a new weapon.â
ââŠYeah,â
Seeing Kageyamaâs shoulders shook slightly, you understood this also took a toll on him somehow. Stepping forward until youâre one foot away from him, you reached your hand out to gently hold on to his. You didnât really know how to comfort the opposite gender, usually you would just pull Yachi into a hug when sheâs not having the best feeling. Kageyama replied to your gesture by tightening his grip on your hand.
Not caring for the time, you choose to stay with Kageyama until he let go.

hii so not trying to be rude when i say this but 5â7 isnât tall, thatâs just average height. if you want to write something for the tall girls out there then you should make y/n 5â9-5â10 and up, thatâs actually tall for a girl.
Hi! Thank you for the insight! 170.5 cm maybe average in your opinion but for my country, Indonesia, it's not. The average height for women here is around 151 cm, in Japan the average height for women is around 158 cm so 170 cm is considered quite tall!
But thank you for the critics, I'll consider it for future references!
