Stories that use the "rejected by my fated mate" just kinda make me mad, cause what was the point of being someone's fated mate if that's not the person you're gonna end up with?
What? The one person who's supposed to love, cherish, protect and be there for me against all odds doesn't want me?
What is this REALITY?
Gross. Hard pass
Let me live in my delusion that someone would care about me, flaws and all,
just because

Okay but I'm going a bit insane about the growing disconnect of "maybe we're meant to harness it"/"maybe we're meant to fight it". They both thought they were on the same page when they said it, when actually they were on polar opposite ends of the same spectrum. Imogen meant "I never plan to give in to this power even if part of me wants to, I will continue fighting it, but it’s a comfort knowing there’s someone who understands the temptation and who I know won't judge and will still love me and understand if I ultimately fail and give in". Meanwhile to Laudna it meant "I've been in this struggle for longer than I can remember and I don’t know if I can do it much longer. I don’t know if I want to. I don’t know if I even should, or if giving in would be better for all of us because I'm a lost cause. You understand this about me and won't judge as I inevitably am doomed by the narrative, and you won't demand of me that I fight an inherent part of myself, even if it’s destroying me". And Imogen is finally catching on to this disconnect, is realizing that to Laudna their connection isn’t just understanding but an excuse, not too different from Lilliana. And, desperate of losing Laudna to power just like she did her mother, she says, 'if you let me go, I'm gone', meanwhile Laudna is going 'all I can do for you is die and let you go to lift you up' and both of them are going 'why are you so upset about this. i love you'.

I find it deeply aesthetically pleasing, character-wise, that Arthur and Merlin are both very much like their mothers, which is especially meaningful in Arthur's case since he's never known his mother beyond a single painfully brief meeting in "Sins of the Father."
Not only does Arthur look like Ygraine (which adds several layers to the clusterfuck of his and Uther's relationship) but it's clear that he takes after her temperament, too. Yes, he sometimes shows his father's temper, and yes, he does stupid things when he's in a temper, but unlike Uther, who literally took his prejudices to his grave and beyond, Arthur never stays mad at people, and he's overall a far more caring and kind person than his father, which is an interesting case of nature vs nurture.
And then on the other hand, we have Hunith, who told a mounted, armed brigand to go fuck himself, later fought another (also armed) brigand with a twig broom, harboured fugitives on multiple occasions, and raised an illegal magic child out of wedlock, and Merlin "Fuck the Police" Ambrosius, who got in a fistfight, got thrown in jail for the fistfight, called the prince a bitch to his face in a public market square, got in a second, armed fight all within his first 48 hours in Camelot, and then committed treason on a daily basis for the next 10+ years, compared to Balinor, who became a weird antisocial hermit that lived in a cave for twenty years.
couldn't have said it better myself bestie
also, there's a reason hunith and ygraine never met in the show. their dynamic duo would outshine everyone, they'd be unstoppable, untouchable, I FEEL ROBBED

hdkwhdkw god how i HATE the way every sakura-center fanfic is always about sakura realizing she isn't strong and that she needs to take her treaning more seriously AND THAT'S GREAT i love that but i definitely don't like that they always make her like, give up on sasuke(? or don't care about him or whatever. and i mean that doesn't make the fics less good or anything but c'mon, she's a twelve years old, let her have a crush at least. where are the fics where idk she realizes that sasuke (strong, and from a strong family sasuke) wouldn't like her if she's weak and doesn't take the ninja life seriously enough and blablabla and decides to do better because of that??? idk that's something I'd like to read i guess

I know this isn't going to have any effect on those who feel justified in hating the adaptations they do - all sorts from comic to screen, book to screen, animated to live-action - but in my re-watch of ATLA (animated), I've noticed a lot more 'eeehhh' storytelling than I did in my other watches. Because I'm looking for it to compare specifically how they did it in the animated to how they did it in the live-action.
And let me tell you - the animated story is amazing, phenomenal, one of my favorites ever...and it has storytelling issues.
So maybe, if you were convinced the PJO adaptation was shit, the ATLA adaptation was awful, the Wheel of Time show was a tragedy, try going back and watching/reading the OG LOOKING for things to gripe about. Treat the OG like you treat the adaptation - with the most critical eye for any inconsistency, character work you don't like, plot holes, expositional dialogue, and pacing issues.
LOOK for those issues, and I guarantee you'll find them. Because, let me let you in on a secret: no story is perfect. We love them anyways because the story is still good. It's still meaningful. It still has merit.
Imagine the OG is actually the adaptation and (if you're able to honestly do that) you'll find things the adaptation did better.
Again, I know the people who've made it their personality to hate all adaptations and pretend they're storytelling geniuses who know best aren't going to pay attention to this, but idk, maybe one person will? Or for us more forgiving watchers, we'll be able to catch ourselves if we start to make some uncharitable, knee-jerk arguments about certain pieces of media.
Idk, just try it maybe.

On Ashrah/Reptile and Kuai Liang/Harumi
I've noticed that most people feel like these two pairings need more backstory to make sense. As much as I enjoy the story overall... I agree. I feel like if they were fleshed out a bit more (What drew Reptile to Ashrah so soon after his family's death? We know how Kuai Liang felt, but what did Harumi find attractive about him?), more people would be open to them. The potential is there, but maybe the NRS writers weren't given the opportunity to spend much time developing these ships.
I actually have a Kuai Liang/Harumi fic that I've been working on, and eventually I'd like to write one for Ashrah/Reptile, too. Again, the potential is there. I feel like imagining the scope of what their motives could be will help me accept NRS's decisions more.
Anyways, I hope to start posting the first fanfic on here soon!

Trans boy Percy can be a lot of fun
just a lot of people have a tendency to make it something he comes out about Pre-canon and that it changes nothing
while I'm over here like I firmly believe that Molly would not have continued having kids if she thought she already had a daughter
and i think she would be annoying as hell about him figuring himself out I just think she would be so disrespectful about it
Molly would be a "but your ruining yourself! you are my baby girl!" while crying type of parent and I believe that in my heart
She would guilt trip Percy like crazy about it while feeling 100% like she's doing the right thing.
Do I think that maybe she would realize after a few years that she's being absolutely terrible? I mean like I would hope so

in a similar vein to my last post: i can't stop thinking about ludinus not just. killing caleb and beau when he had ample opportunity time and means
and I can't stop thinking about the way they were front and center during the keyleth and vax bait and switch
i severely doubt this is happening but I'm doing pretty good with success rate on theory prophecies recently
i just can't stop thinking about:
1. caleb and beau being specifically kept as bait to lure in their partners and to a logical extent the nein, with the intemt to use them as heavily as he used vax and showing them vividly how well it works
2. caleb being dominate person'd at like ninth level with no way to stop it with the collar [i would love to include beau in this too I'm just not sure anything would stick with stillness of mind. but maybe she'd pretend to keep an eye on things] and him becoming the high level wizard sympathetic villain essek could have been. ESPECIALLY if the wildemount team finds essek in uthodurn for even more parallels. i just think the empire kids deserve to be a little bit uncontrollably evil because that's all i wanted in the somnovem arc and taking away player agency isn't as big of a deal now that they're npcs ♥️

Recently Viewed: Re-Animator
[The following review contains SPOILERS; YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!]
Tumblr media
Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator (an extremely loose adaptation of a serialized story penned by H. P. Lovecraft) comfortably resides at the intersection of horror and slapstick. The scenario of a zombified corpse carrying its own severed head, for example, wouldn’t feel out of place in a Chuck Jones animated short (albeit a particularly grotesque, macabre one)—though actor David Gale’s talent for nonverbal communication elevates the classic gag (sheer annoyance has never been so palpable).
And no, I won’t elaborate on what exactly that decapitated torso gets up to. If you know, you know.
The true MVP, of course, is young Jeffrey Combs, who is seemingly impervious to the inherent absurdity of the film’s premise, delivering an utterly earnest, straight-faced, unironic performance. In his capable hands, ambitious medical student Herbert West epitomizes arrogance, vanity, and egotism; despite his formidable intellect, the aspiring scientist is neither wise nor self-aware enough to recognize his increasingly obvious madness. Thus, Combs’ unwavering sincerity merely reflects his character’s humorless disposition and unflinching confidence in his academic brilliance—a compelling, insightful, thematically appropriate creative choice.
Tumblr media
The movie is hardly flawless; indeed, Arrow’s recent 4K restoration inadvertently exposes some rather lackluster cinematography (flat lighting, bland compositions) that might otherwise have been disguised by the fuzzy grain of a VHS transfer. Such minor blemishes, however, are ultimately inconsequential. The artistic value of a production like Re-Animator is measured not in the quality of its craftsmanship, the structure of its plot, or the depth of its narrative, but in gallons of gore and volume of sleazy subject matter—and on those dubious “merits,” it is an undeniable success.

a while back i made a post (that of course i now won't be able to find) that was like, two really popular (complementary!) fallacies are (1) thinking an experience is universal, when in fact it's specific to one's particular body/psyche/milieu; and (2) thinking an experience is specific to a particular body/psyche/milieu, when in fact it transcends such divisions—
anyway i get that the phrase 'purposelessly cloistral' is fun to sneer but i'm afraid that, like rhetoric about 'touching grass,' i actually think it's both unkind and intellectually unrigorous as analysis. yes, exposure to a broad variety of people is good for you, and can help you realize that positions you've taken for granted aren't shared by everyone; but people tend to cluster into insular echo chambers anywhere they congregate, whether that be in chatrooms or churches or cities, and i'm frankly very tired of this recurrent urge to, like, resurrect middle school ideas of coolness and use them as cudgels. clubbing—of either variety!—doesn't make you a better person.
