I don't have much to say about Magne other than there was an Attempt, but. That time when Twice and Toga got angry with Overhaul for misgendering her was already indicative of what I'm going to get at in a sec, and obviously it was especially relevant because it was a direct show of respect and support from people who very clearly cared about her (and who called her big sis already as it was!!) (×2 imo because Twice was intentionally written to be the readers' insight into the LOV, and the character with whom they were supposed sympathise with the most at/since the beginning, so it's especially important that the first one who spoke up was him), but the story's progression (especially in recent years) is what most assures me that despite a rather poor execution (definitely not the best, but also certainly not the worst) Horikoshi did mean well with her. "People bound together by the chains of society always laugh at those who aren't" :(
#^ when she quotes her friend. like had the manga not gone on like it has that could have very well been a generic#We Live in a Society moment. but it wasn't. and that's what's comforting tbh#in general i think a big issue with magne from what little we know of her is that her reason for joining the lov was fighting back against#a tangibile real world issue (transphobia) vs all the other villains. whose situations Are partially real world issues as well#(eg child abuse) but they also very much present fantasy elements to them (eg toga's treatment due to her quirk)#and i'm not saying this as a justification for killing her off but. when you're writing a superhero comic with a target audience of young#cishet men it is much easier to present them with fantasy solutions to fantasy problems. again not that i think it's right!!!#but i do assume that horikoshi's thought process was more or less this. like. tiger is there alive and well#but he passes and was confirmed to be trans only via word of god so his identity has no bearing on the story itself#while magne's did. which doesn't make tiger's transness any less ''real'' than hers ofc but again i think it was a matter of what horikoshi#could actually deal with (fantasy problems) with the average readers that he has. it sucks all the way around.#which begs the question. ''why create her character in the first place then'' to which i answer: i don't fucking know man#bnha#animanga#mytext#in general. i've seen lots of people do this even with eg toga and her bisexuality (and when it comes to her i completely disagree but w/e)#but. authors who want to depic queer characters in good will but make mistakes or do it awkwardly or anything else#should Not be put on the same level as actively queerphobic authors. at all. do criticise what's worthy of constructive#criticism when you see it but don't even pretend that those two are remotely the same thing#(jic i didn't explain myself well bc i don't think that i did. what i wholly disagree with is that ''toga is a bad bi stereotype''.#i am bi people and i disagree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is why I dropped off of Crystal after season 3, they keep pandering to the 90s fans and reusing stuff from the 90s anime that it became hard to enjoy it. Deadass wish that we could get another adaptation, this time one that's actually faithful to the manga instead of catering to nostalgia and hopefully not in Toei's hands because they haven't been treating it right.
Like this right here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know I made light of this situation which you can find the post right here but this really goes beyond homages to the 90's anime.
It's not a copy and paste but it's straight pandering to the 90's anime.
Because the simple fact the top pic is an VERY VERY iconic shot in the 90's anime first season. When people see it they know exactly what scene and episode it is to point they can tell you which song is playing and probably quote lines.
So of course when they show in the trailer a shot almost look like the first shot, the comparisons is going to happen. Which lord, I can not go on a SM FB group without seeing these two shots together being posted and people saying " Oh I like the 90's anime one better." and " Well this didn't happen in the manga." which we already know that.
I mean Dark Kingdom Arc and StarS Arc supposed to actually mirror each other if you really think about it since it really shows Usagi's growth as teenager on the cusp of womanhood but the 90's anime missed the memo .
But I also look at in this angle which I did touch on in the previous link.
I really wonder how Naoko feels about the second shot that going to be in Cosmos because lets think about this.
Naoko wanted to kill the senshi the Dark Kingdom so it only be one arc but was told not to by execs because they wanted another season.
The writers then killed the senshi off which episodes 45-46 still pack an emotional punch to this day which is 31 years ago. Then you have the top shot which is Usagi fighting Beryl by herself but with the sprit of the senshi beside her which is one the most recognizable shots in the 90's anime.
So they did something that she wanted to do but couldn't do because they told her not to do it which the 90's anime got a big emotional pay off for doing it.
So Naoko does Black Moon, Infinity, then Dream arc which arc feels like the end but they want her to do one more arc.
So she does it but does it her way and at last she does what she wanted to do in Dark Kingdom arc.
Kill the Senshi off.
But she does it in a way that you can tell that she's done for real and you can tell that she's done.
Have a villain that is a also Sailor Senshi gunning for the most powerful Senshi?
Yeah kill your main love interest when he's purposing to the main character?
Take out the main character best friends two by two and don't give you enough time to grieve before the next two is gone?
Take out the main character new allies by impaling one of them and killing them?
Then bringing the main character friends and love back in which she have to fight and kill them in order to save them?
Yeah she was done. If you kill your main characters the way Naoko kill her off in StarS ( even if she bought them back) she was really to let go of Sailor Moon and move on.
But then the 90's anime couldn't even do her last arc right as a simple thank you for all the work she done..
Which now we have the reboot that has been faithful to her content 95% of the time.
So I really can't imagine her seeing the top image and not going back and thinking about the fact how she wasn't able to do that and not 31 years later in a reboot that suppose to be faith to her work decided to pay homage to it in the bottom image is something that SHE couldn't do until that last arc when she finally said "Fuck it let me kill them all . " ( Which I know just had to be fucking satisfying)
Even if the 90's anime made her money just like the Manga did.
It's a like a slap in the face to me but I maybe reading to much into it..
It always feel like the 90's anime will take precedence over any other version of Sailor Moon which is completely not fair.
It maybe the version that got most of us into the fandom but it shouldn't be the one that should have the most pandering..
One more point than I'm gone
Like this Iconic scene right here in R Movie
Tumblr media
Some people want to say that Crystal was "copying and paste" this scene in episode 14
Tumblr media
Not realizing it is coming straight from the manga and really R Movie was paying homage to it...
Tumblr media
Because the manga scene came first. Because somehow anything the manga or crystal do is an " insultment" to the 90's anime...
Because let my say this then I am gone for real this time.
Sailor Moon Crystal come out in 2014.
When it finally ends with the two Sailor Moon Cosmos Movies being released in June, on July 5th 2023 with be the 9th anniversary of its premiere.
So we have been Nine long years into this Adventure that has been Sailor Moon Crystal..
Which people are still having a hard time gasping the fact that this reboot that been going on for almost 9 years with two very big hiatuses is based of the manga aka the original source material and not the 90's anime.
That when we had that two year hiatus between the initial announcement of the reboot and Crystal coming out, that's one the only piece of info we knew.
Something that has been over discussed?
Something that I know I have said to many times that I know yall tired of me saying.
I am tired myself saying.
Now we are at the end of the series after nine years.
Finally after character design changes, going from web format to t.v format to movie format, this reboot is finally coming to an end and people still thinking " Oh if it happened in the 90's anime its going to happen in the Crystal" and be downright ready to say Crystal got it wrong when Crystal is doing everything that was in the Manga aka source material. As if everything the 90's anime did is law and everything Crystal is doing is going against the law.
How many times people have to say " Read the manga please?" because people are tired of those hottakes?
Bitch I'm tired since I just turned 33 today and been on this site since I was 20 years old in 2010.
November 24, 2010
So almost 13 years of seeing a lot of shit. Good and bad.
I can really use this meme big time.
Tumblr media
I'm a damn old head on this site.
Let me wrap this up. lol

(Manga Spoilers btw)
I'm rereading the end of the wano arc and egghead cause I have shitty memory and I just 🥲
My baby Tama, she suffered so much but she clung to the hope Sukiyaki gave her that one day everything would get better and she stayed happy regardless of everything because she believed in the Kozuki clan and they came back in the end to save Wano and Luffy kept his promise
All her suffering, all the terrible things she had seen that no child her age should have to endure were so clear in this moment and her asking speed to stay with her as her mom before breaking down
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nami please hug her and never let go, she deserves so much love
The fact that she helped them fight despite not needing to and being a great help in lowering the number of pirates fighting for Kaido while probably exhausting herself (I can't remember if her using her devil fruit too much makes her tired)
She deserves all the food, happiness and love she'll get now that Kaido and co. are gone. I know Tama's parents are proud of her for holding out despite all the shit she went through
On a different note, I really love how much Nami empathizes wih struggling kids because while their situations aren't identical, she had once been a struggling kid and there was no around to protect her so now she wants to be the person she needed in that point in her life
She is the embodiment of the quote "Be the person that you needed when you were younger"
Her relationship with all the suffering children she encounters, the way she always, always defends and protects them despite her not being the strongest in the crew. The soft look on her face when Tama finally starts crying because the weight of all the trauma she had endured was finally gone and she was finally free.
She knows exactly what that feels like because Luffy had done the same for her and I just... I love these panels, I love these characters, I love everything about the wano arc
And Luffy finally smiling while sleeping because he knows he accomplished his goal and now Tama can eat as much as she wants and smile and be happy rather than suffering and starving because she's his friend and she deserves better than the shitty situation she was born into
I just realized this stuff will be in this week' or next week's episode, I'm gonna cry
Fuck you Kaido, you bitch. I hope that magma burns you and big mom

LO reasoning apparently: liking bigoted media like gone with the wind means ur racist, but calling a non-binary, Jewish person who had family that died in the holocaust, a nazi sympathizer is not antisemitic and totally doesn’t refect on me as a person. (This very funny coming from someone who defended family guy and big bang theory on very similar grounds)
Ontop of that she's now pretty much implied that Rebecca sugar just stole everything from her story from anime, and even went out of her way to post a person's response that claims she just copied an anime and changed it to be not violent due to a hissy fit. Even though said anime is not at all similar to SU and is pretty much a horror, so why would RS throw a fit because it was to violent, when it literally is about the main character eating people? Like they wouldn't get past episode 3, let alone be able to watch the whole thing and rip it off. (Also love how LO criticizes people for posting shit about her without looking into whether it's real, yet, despite obviously not watching this anime, she takes this person's response as true because it backs up her hate toward Sugar)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as someone that actually watched Tokyo Ghoul this is so incredibly wrong on every way possible and imaginable by everyone who has also watched either the anime or manga even. i don't usually say this confidently because you may never know, but for this anon i do feel comfortable saying that LO wrote it herself. what fan of a show is going to refer to the it as "the popular anime", as if they're quoting a wikipedia article? and since when LO values the word of someone so disgustingly racist, according to her own logic, that they'd actually refer themselves as a weeb? none of this makes any sense. i can imagine that she just pick a violent anime, read the wikipedia article and that was enough to declare it the biggest inspiration for SU... even though everyone knows already that the magical girl genre is a bigger influence than horror anime in terms of aesthetic, themes, colors and plot points. but LO doesn't know anything about magical girl anime beyond knowing Sailor Moon exist so she can't references it. all the "similarities" they listed are extremely common plot points on a lot of media, not just SU or anime. only someone who has barely watched any media at all would think that those are direct references rather than well known narrative paths. "start killing when they hurt their friends" is a whole genre of western movies too. promising young woman was inspired by Tokyo Ghoul according to this logic. futhermore, we're talking about a show that lasted 5 seasons and a movie. if you can summarize all your references on a neat little collage like that one, then that it's still a lot of original content.

@escapedartgeek
"SURPRISE!!"
Zora's eyes widened once they saw the sight before them. The sign at the new bakery was covered with a banner reading 'GOOD LUCK Z!' The lobby was covered with balloons and the tables were catered with all of the artist's favorite treats and meals. Confettie poppers could be heard from behind the counter where the new Luna family popped up with wide grins.
Two fang toothed children grinned brightly at Zora. Jason and Regine Luna, the two new additions to the family of witches. Like the rest of the Lunas, they had adorable noses though one could see their mother's influence as well. While Jason had a smile similar to his dad's, his eyes were much softer like his mothers. Regine, of course, inherrited those iconic puppy dog eyes that Chris was known for.
A young woman of average height offered a chill yet kind smile, Delainey 'D' Luna (nee' Harris). Like her children, she held a pair of fangs thanks to her vampire lineage. With her hair in braids, she had an look inspired by the 90's celebrity culture. Thanks to a black bandana covering her head that matched the converse on her fee she gave hints of the cool girl, even with the vintage Dungeons and Dragons shirt.
Finally was none other than Christopher Noe Luna, their best friend and planner of said party. Despite a few years passing, Chris still looked the same as the day they met. No doubt thanks to his witch side and maybe a healthy skin care routine.
A smile spreads across their face, "You guys! You didn't have to."
Chris and D could only shake their heads.
"Dude, we gotta. You're literally about to make a big ass step off the planet, it would be wrong if we didn't. Plus, it was their idea." Chris replied, hand ruustling the young Luna's hair.
Zora was then greeted by the family familars of Dee and Lord Quas, happily offering them cuddles. Knowing Quas and his theatrics, he thought this would be the last time he would get a chance to see the family close friend.
Zora was making preps to live off planet, journeying into the beyond. While they didn't know if it would be for good, the Luna's knew they would be gone for a while. As always they had their friends back, even if they would miss them dearly.
The night was filled with food, laughs, reminscing on fond and outright silly memories. Zora let out an uprorious laugh when they told the younger Lunas about how Chris and Delainey met.
"Oh trust me, I'll never forget your dad's face!" Zora laughed. "She literally said and I quote 'I could kill you where you stand'. Now tell me why Chris walks up to me talking about 'I...think I like her."
An embarrassed chuckle comes from Chris while his wife nods.
"Sure did, so you can imagine my surprise when I saw him again. Red roses and a card in his hand. 'Sorry about the misunderstanding...I hope this makes it up to you'." Delainey imitated her husband before giving him a playful nudge. "But he was cute and made it up to me with dinner."
"Then we had dinner or went to a movie every weekend before you...staked your claim on me."
A collective eye roll ensued.
"Oooooooooh brother! This guy stinks!" D laughed with another nudge, making Chris smile.
The youngest, Jason, looked up at Zora. Presenting them with a small wrapped box. Unwrapping the young man's gift, the artist found a box for a CD player along with a homemade CD. In a childish drawing, the cover displayed a picture of him playing ukulele to a planet sized crowd.
"...Um...I made some songs you might like. Like my own but there's also other songs you like on there..."
Z offered him a smile, rustling the adorable dreads on his head. "Oooh! I get the first CD? I'll make sure to keep it so you can sign it once you're famous." they chuckled, bringing an emberassed blush to the boys face.
Regine on the other hand, offered up a drawing. No doubt influenced by the anime her mom watched with her. Depicting the Lunas and Z as characters in an action manga.
"Me and Mom drew all of us as characters in my comic, I'm still figuring out the plot. But you get the first concept art!" Regine grinned.
"Ah! Glad to see creativity runs in the family! I'll make sure to keep this around when I need inspiration." Zora chuckled, pulling the young Luna in for a hug. For a moment, just for a second Z the thought of staying appeared in their mind but they wanted to stick to their plan.
"Well since everyone wanna give gifts or whateva, me and Chris made you a little something too." Delainey said, presenting a medium-sized white box. "A little something for when you go back in a more human form and want to flex on some people."
Curious, Zora opened said box. Inside was a custom carhartt jacket. On the right chest piece was a red and green logo inspired by Tribe's low-end theory album. The back held a design of the various Tribe members in a comic book style, reminiscent of MF DOOM's All Cap video.
"Chris made the designs, I just helped get it onto the jacket. It's a Carhartt so it'll last you a minute." she shrugged.
"Oh...man...this is," Zora took another look. "Beautiful...you guys really went all out on this...! Thank you..."
Chris offered up a smile.
"I mean we had to you're family, Zora. Always have and always will be."
The family said their goodbyes, each giving Zora a hug and promises of seeing each other again. D offers up the bakery as a place to stay if they decide to return before finally leaving the two best friends.
The duo stared at each other for an eternal moment before laughing, though one could see a tear forming in the baker's eyes.
"I knew you were gonna crack first!" Zora teased, making Chris shake his head.
"Nah, I saw you hesitate when Regine hugged you!" Chris replied, hand wiping away the teardrop. They finally embraced one another, Chris offering a squeeze. He knew this day was coming but he still wasn't prepared for it. Chris couldn't help but tear up at his best friend leaving. Despite the oncoming waterworks, the baker finally found the words he wanted to say to his friend.
"...I love you dude, "Chris finally spoke. "I'm gonna miss you, just know that. I don't know if you're gonna come back...but you always got a place here."
Even Z couldn't resist their own oncoming tears.
"I love you too," Z replied. "You guys are gonna be missed too...I appreciate everything you guys did for me. I'll be around at some point. I promise."

*hands you the mic* top five favorite franchise? (Or more than five, however many you want to share)
*grabs mic* Alright, I had to think on this a bit. I always seem to have a hard time picking definitive favorites. (Also it took me a while to word everything just right.) Also, gonna add a read more since I think this is gonna get long.
5) Dragon Ball
The irony of this being being in my top five is that I remember when I was a dumb child who thought I wouldn’t like it.
Literally. When I was in early elementary school, my best friend and her younger brother were sleeping over one day; so we were in the basement and watching TV, and there was en episode of DBZ on that they wanted to watch, but I did not. Like, to the point of looking away from the TV with my hands over my ears. (Young me was so dumb.) All I remember was that it was an episode with King Kai in it.
And then in 2014, my older brother got into Dragon Ball, so he was telling me about the characters and stuff; and then one day he decided to show me a clip on YouTube, and that clip was Goten vs Ekosa (idk why that one). And the he introduced me to Abridged, so for a while all I watched was random clips on YT and Abridged.
And then later that summer Battle of Gods came out in theaters in the US, so we went to see it. A bunch of his friends were supposed to see it with us, but they didn’t buy tickets ahead of time and it was sold out by the time we got there, so it was just my brother and I. And then on the way home, he was telling me about this website (that has since been shut down I think) called dbz.tv that had all of DB/Z/GT and all the movies in English.
So it was with that website that I watched all of OG DB. But this was back when I had my old desktop computer with the 8pm curfew and all these website restrictions. So what I did was sneak downstairs whenever possible and watch it on my mom’s iPad. And then after that, I went on to Z, which I never fully finished; I either stopped at the filler episode of Gohan and the robot, or after the fight with Vegeta when they were loading Goku onto the aircraft to go to the hospital.
And a couple month ago, I thought to myself “I should revise DB” and now I'm here, spiraling in brainrot.
4) Fairy Tail
The second anime I’ve ever seen. Also I don’t remember if I knew that Pokémon was an anime when I got into Fairy Tail, so this might’ve been my introduction to anime in general.
I was introduced to Fairy Tail one day at a friend's house. Their family actually had Netflix so we watched the first episode together. And then I went looking for somewhere to watch it online, and I just ended up down the rabbit hole. (This was also the first show I ever made an OC for; if I ever revisit her, she's gonna need a lot of reworking.)
I’ve also been considering rewatching some time soon, and I gotta get caught up on the sequel manga, so probably expect more posts/reblogs on it some time soonish.
3) Fire Emblem
Another one I got into via my brother. I think Awakening had recently come out, and he was telling me about the plot, and then one day he let me do a playthrough on his copy. I remember after I got Donnel, he did the grinding for me to get him to a point where he’d be usable and good in battle.
Although, I was not very good at the game back then. I sucked at strategy and knew NOTHING of other class lines to reclassify into or skill inheritance, which is why my Donnel!Nah got Sol instead of Aptitude and my Frederick!Yarne got Luna (they did wreck quite a bit of shop on the battlefield though). And there were a number of characters that I never used, so there were a number of 2nd gen units that I never got. Like I said, I sucked.
That save file is long since gone. And over time, as the years have passed and I’ve played more games, I've gotten somewhat better.
2) Lilo & Stitch
A classic. I have seen the first movie so many times; I used to quote it with my best friend all the time; I still quote it quite often. I remember waking up real early some Saturdays just to watch the TV show. Also I recently got the remaining two movies that I did not already own on DVD for my birthday.
1) Pokémon
This may be kinda cliché, but I just really love Pokémon. Maybe it’s the nostalgia, but I can’t see anything else topping the list anytime soon. It’s always been there for me and always given the whole range of feels. Idk what more to say about it.

Hellsing Commentary 9 Notes
This commentary is done by Taliesin Jaffe, the voice director and script adapter of Hellsing, and Katie Grey, the voice of Seras Victoria. Direct quotes may vary in accuracy, as these are written down from audio without transcripts. I also didn't write down every joke or piece of trivia because I feel like people who watch the commentaries should get to have some nice surprises for stuff that isn't covered here.
-Katie's audition for Hellsing was her first-ever voiceover audition, and she was very excited about not having to dress up for whatever character she was playing. Aside from Seras, she also auditioned for Integra initially. Taliesin chips in at this point and says "I had everybody read for everything, I didn't even have scripts yet. We were using snippets from the book Neverwhere, 'cause I didn't actually have any Hellsing yet."
-Taliesin notes that the speech Katie read from Neverwhere was the part where "Croup and Vandemar are threatening Richard Mayhew at the very beginning, it was the 'Do you know what your own liver tastes like?'"
-Katie was a background character on Friends.
-Taliesin was excited by Katie's "very very carnivorous" reading of Seras because he had the manga before the anime and knew where Seras would be going, "and I was like 'Oh, this is perfect, 'cause she can get there when we get there!' And it only took, like, twelve years to get there."
-Taliesin has always liked how Hellsing's cast "is very specific, and its ours." in that very few of the VAs have done other dubbing work. "Like, I'm occasionally covetous. They're all mine, they don't go anywhere. (evil laugh) This is Hellsing, it sounds like Hellsing, and nothing else does. 'Cause I've got my cast, my cast."
-In mentioning Alucard's backstory, Taliesin talks about how historically "it's largely assumed that he actually didn't have that happen to him, for no other reason than his brother was much, much prettier than he was. It's a statement, apparently, of record that Vlad the Impaler's brother was very attractive and Vlad the Impaler was kinda 'meh'. Poor man. Even as a child, it was remarked that his brother was the pretty one."
-Taliesin also returns to how Seras and Alucard's backstories mirror each other, "but she came out of it where he didn't. And I like to think, in my heart of hearts, that was why he turned her into a vampire, is 'cause it's 'Oh, she's just like me, except stronger.'"
-According to Taliesin, "This whole last two episodes, we just start dealing with everybody's death wish, and it just all boils down to- everybody's looking for someone to just put them out of their misery." He also mentions how Seras is one of the few characters who doesn't have a death wish, "it never even occurs to her that there's a reason to just let go."
-Taliesin mentions how "Very rarely do I have an idea when I start casting a show, like, 'That's who I want' and then a month later 'That's who I hired,' it's usually 'That's who I want' and then a month later I'm like 'Damn, someone else is just so much more interesting!' I was not- Liam (vampirized Walter) came out of nowhere with this really great, kinda sexy, lilt-y Walter, and I was like 'This is- this is fun.' It was not where I was expecting. And then when he gets young, it's a good bridge to young Walter, who's just, really- I don't wanna say sloppy, but it's this very young, very brash voice. It's not, all the cleanliness is gone."
-Heinkel's VA had to have a finger in her mouth while recording the lines after her cheeks were shot out.
-Taliesin very rarely ends up with outtakes, and guesses that that's because they're a release and the people he directs tend to not need it because they were all playing around with the canon lines already.
-The OVA 9 commentary was the last to be recorded: the OVA 10 commentary was recorded prior to it. Taliesin wanted to be able to "gush" as well as have the opportunity to get mushy. OVA 9 was also the last episode that Taliesin wrote: Patrick Seitz wrote OVA 10.
-According to Taliesin, Seras didn't go to college.
-Also according to Taliesin, "The theory we finally put together is that Walter was just not happy being second-best, and the only way that you could be the best is to make sure everybody else is second-best. And so he had to devise a very complicated scheme to uh, boost his self-esteem. (brief laugh) And beat Alucard and prove that he is in fact the scariest thing on earth."
-Katie apparently would pick up a guitar and start strumming it whenever there was a long break during voice recording. Taliesin encourages her to actually pick up the guitar currently in the recording booth and sing, and she performs a short folksy-ish improv about Hellsing and Seras.
-The scene where Schrodinger welcomes Integra and Seras and gets his head shot off is one Taliesin's favorites and made Schrodinger's VA laugh really hard.
-Taliesin says that there's a certain amount of relief being done with Hellsing, since he was working on it for 13 years and it's hard to sustain energy that long, even though he'll miss it. "I really enjoy the darkness, and I enjoy bringing all of this- this- what I would like to think is very cathartic- its cathartic violence, it's silly violence and it's not, it's never mean-spirited, very rarely mean-spirited, and when it is there's a point to it."
-Katie and Taliesin joke about him being a "vampippie," a mixture of vampire and hippie, since he is usually the one goth amongst a crowd of hippies at Katie's music gatherings.
-Trying to figure out where to switch actors from Walter's 20-year-old voice to his younger self was "tricky."
-Taliesin loves Girlycard's hat.
-Katie has several music albums out in her capacity as a singer.
-During the credits, Taliesin coaches Katie through saying the "Bitches love cannons" line several times in Seras's voice.

Appearance and Personality
Appearance: Allison has rather slightly with q muscular but slender female body build from up-close. She has shoulder-lenght medium grey colored hair which it reaches to the back of where her spine was. Like her companion Clementine, she too has heterochromia colored eyes, ash grey color on her left eye which it revealed to be her normal eye while her right is light wood brown colored which it revealed to be her inner beast eye, which her right eye can glow whenever she uses her inner beast abilities. Allison is on of the fire-arming assassins, she's stern and up-lightly serious.
Personality: Born as the only girl aside from her five older brothers in her family's side, when she was a child she was either watched by her mother or one of her five brothers, her father on the point didn't seem to have any plans on letting her to have the experience of an assassin's life, around at age ten, he had let her to have childhood freedom like a normal life alongside with joining her brothers and other of her family members.
That was lasted when she turned had twelve, when she had encountered one of the large monsters after wandering too far from home after school to the forest entrance one afternoon. Allison quickly acted fast despite getting scared and ended up eliminating it as her brothers arrived only to find her in a mess alongside with the corpse of the dead beast she had killed with a nearby weapon.
Nearly after about three weeks of slow recovery, her parents had asked her if she wanted to become an assassin, needless to say Allison agree to do it not just because of what had happened to her, but for other reasons. After hearing her statement, her father agrees as she joins her five older brothers training sessions till she became one of the rumored fire-arming assassins in the city.
The current Allison we're now looking is a sharp-headed individual and tends to be serious around with her duties around the dorm and other that she is assigned to. Is mostly seen with her fellow dorm member Clementine, either preventing her from clashing with another student or so on. She does get tired a lot from antics, such as Akira and Clementine's troubles for an example, does get worn out pretty well.
Although she can be a bit too serious from time to time, she can be wise on advices well mostly on battle tactics on assassins, offers her new dorm members demonstrations to show how it has to be handled to get the job done, she seems to hold a serious big sister figure to others. Won't change much if you get close to her.
To beware that her skills as an assassin and fire-arming is also another warning for her limits, being underestimated is something that she doesn't want to have in her life, will might give you a feed back of the same warning but perhaps in another method that can send a message to know your place in the end, after all sugarcoating her words are her specialty in the after fight.
She's both scary but seems calm, but Clementine would probably annoy her as much, pretty something to see.

Trivia
-The name 'Allison' means noble, while her surname 'Hill' means 'a person who lived on a hill'.
-She based on Tadaomi Karasuma from the series.
-Like Clementine and a few of her dorm mates, she too knows the other races.
-She too hides the 'real' venom queen's identity with Clementine as well.
-Would often separate Clementine and Akira whenever it's possible, even during dorm training sessions.
-She's annoyed with Toshihiro, whom that he had called her through a nickname that she dislikes sweets. Would get into a daily fight with him whenever it's possible.
-Is a fond of Himari, the two are seen in P.E. classes having a normal interaction.
-As mentioned, she encountered one of the monsters after wandering off to the first entrance. After her experience, she declared to become an fire-arming assassin.
-Is very skilled in fire-arming and shooting, making her being rumored in her homeland during her missions.
-Probably knows who to make customizinh weapons, such as guns.
-Her voice sounds pretty deep, needless to say but sounds sane however the tone changes whenever she's shouting. Which is why I chose Coco Hayashi to be her voice actor.
-Seems to have an interest at collecting some materials to make new useful weapons, although Clementine would have bragged her about it though.
-Has a pet black husky named 'Rion'.

" ... now i understand. i wanted everyone to love me. i sought for so much. to know everything when i had everything. but i never tried to find out what i truly wanted... and i can't have it anymore. ah, i could have turned back any time, but now it's all gone because of me ! "
dialogue from the houseki no kuni/land of the lustrous manga. can't remember which chapter but it's near the end. i won't talk about the context much in case i spoil someone but i really really really truly super duper resonate with this dialogue 🙃🙃

a game i played
today's game is... va-11 hall-a: cyberpunk bartender action! also known as waifu bartending and the true lesbian experience
Tumblr media
time to mix drinks and change lives.
i first learned about it when my friend told me it was the type of game i would like. i looked it up and, wow he wasn't wrong. it really did look like something I'd be into. so when the steam spring sale rolled around a few days or a week ago i bought it!
honestly the title is very direct with what the game is about. you play as Jill, a bartender in va-11 hall-a (referred to simply as Valhalla) in a technologically advanced world and a corrupt city. you serve drinks to your clients, have long conversations with them where stuff about the characters and world is revealed, and tolerate their weirdness. the game is visual novel heavy and focuses a lot on the talking, which is fine with me! i like the combination of lots and lots of dialogue and casual gameplay where uu still kind of need to use uur brain
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there's a lot of cute girls in the game (re: waifu bartending and the true lesbian experience)
to the left is Dorothy, a lilim robot (basically an advancedsex robot. her product line in particular is modeled to be on the younger side physically) she's really sweet and bubbly and she has a kind personality. to the right is Dana, Jill's boss. i don't know much about Dana yet but a lot of mystery surrounds her. a lot of characters say she's very strong and there's lots of rumors about how she got her prosthetic arm (a lot of rumors may have been started by her.) also Jill's wallpaper is of herself and Dana together and she apparently has lots of photos of Dana in her gallery. i hope i can see them get together
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i find the GUI very satisfying. there's also a home segment where uu sit at home with Jill's cat, fore, and browse Jill's phone. uu can also buy stuff. Jill gets distracted very easily so sometimes uu have to buy things from the online store so Jill would be less distracted at work (SO REAL she's the most accurate representation of ADHD lesbians ever)
since it takes place in a cyberpunk setting there's some political shit going on, the city they live in is a really Bad city with lots of crime and injustice, and the organization "white knights" (basically the cops but stronger and more organized) are known to be power hungry and use their power unfairly for the wrong reasons. also the prime minister seems a bit incompetent? there's also something about a hacker called Alice rabbit... but also at the start of the game, Jill had this weird dream about a girl and occasionally the girl appears on the bar's tv for a split second...... yeah there's a lot going on here
anyways i find the game really fun and i hope to play it more when i have more free time! im still super early in the game . i don't have a singular favorite character yet bc I'm still at the beginning so idk much about them yet and they all look cool to me!!

infodump about an oc
OKAY, SO! the oc i will discuss here is connected to nyxa, an oc i discussed here but reading that infodump isn't necessary to understand this one (not like anyone reads these anyway /lh)
remmeber when i said that, as far as nyxa knows she's the only surviving member of her family after they all killed each other?? WELL! that's wrong she's not the only survivor. her older sister survived as well!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is Amos faust! (or fraust... i spelled her last name differently sometimes) although Amos isn't really her real name, it's just an alias that she always goes by. shes the head of a detective agency! (in my phoebe and nyxa infodump i mention that nyxa becomes a head of a detective agency when she's an adult. she takes over amos' agency)
her backstory is she studied in cloud tower but in her 3rd year she dropped out and disappeared. no one came looking for her because.. no one really knew her, yk? she was quiet, mysterious, she avoided everyone and everyone avoided her. eventually after leaving cloud tower she began a personal investigation where she hunted down a specific person/group that had something to do with her family's demise (like an enemy of the family) and it led her to a detective agency. she concluded that her target was the director. so she entered the agency, climbed the ranks, became trusted and known within the agency, until she had the opportunity to get close enough to the director and kill them. except, she was wrong about her target, so now she had the blood of an innocent person on her hands. out of genuine guilt and regret (and also because she was emotionally attached to this agency and she figured she would have an easier time continuing her investigation within the agency) she pulled some strings and appointed herself as the new director. and she has been the director for the past ██ years.
Amos is a very eccentric person, and those who don't know her well might even regard her as scary. she arrives to strange conclusions, she comes up with strange plans, but somehow her plans always work. most of the time. the people working under her have learned not to question it. she's very skilled at fighting, spywork, reading and using people, etc. it's hard to know if any of her current personality is even true. but sometimes, one can observe that she genuinely cares for the few people who are very close to her, such as her sister nyxa and her assistant. shes also sarcastic, unafraid to speak her mind, really confident in herself and her abilities.
so how do Amos and nyxa meet again?
basically in their 3rd year at alfea, students can sign up as for different part time jobs with agencies that alfea partnered with. there's a wide range of jobs and it's meant to help the students get familiar with the work environment of the career they want to pursue in the future. yk, gain some experience, make connections, get a paycheck, etc. phoebe and nyxa try applying for many jobs but in the end they go with a detective agency. very few students applied for it so they easily get hired after they attend the orientation and pass the test, and also they think it's really cool
when they applied and worked there for a few weeks/months, the director was away on a long business trip so nyxa didn't immediately realize that her fucking sister was in the agency. and idk if she would realize it immediately either. because she hasn't seen her sister in YEARS and i like to think something separated them very early in their lives so they weren't close at all. but Amos would immediately recognize her i think
but yeah. skipping past the specifics of the situation: eventually nyxa learns the truth, she's no longer alone, she still has surviving family etc. nyxa and Amos try to rebuild a familial bond again but it's awkward bc its like.... honestly at this point in their lives they're like strangers to each other. but it's okay they take the time to get to know each other again
i like to imagine nyxa and Phoebe going on missions together with Amos as their chaperone/guardian/protector/guide ^_^
anyway yeah that's all i have to say i think

Ch221-250
i see i no longer have a choice about using the new post editor, but it also gives me 2 choices of heading size, so...win win i guess
i was thinking in general this morning about isane's "cell phone for tall people" idea from one of the omakes i read yday....that's actually pretty handy, as a tall person who used to drop their phone a lot, heh
Ch221: Let Eat the World's End
haha "thrust down on his blade"
ooo ken-chan in his mind.....nice. i do love the parallels between them
"battles are different from quarrels. and if both sides end up living afterwards, it definitely ain't over." i love him...."we're always gonna keep on searching [for power]!! ichigo!!"
(and again they are on a first name basis....even tho this is just a mental image. it's interesting that that's what his mind would choose to show him...like yeah the first time this kind of thing happened was in the kenpachi fight so it sorta makes sense...)
Tumblr media
(so is the new one 10 images per post or is it 10 images per image set)
also interesting to note that realgetsu stabbed ichigo right where grimmjow's hollow hole is
Tumblr media
and the same in return.....wrow
Ch222: No Shaking Throne
i do like the king/horse extended metaphor...and that realgetsu calls ichigo 'king' in general
Tumblr media
KUBO!!!!!
tatsuki :(
oh yes speaking of aizen's objective....why did he go through all the trouble of what he did when he knew he could have just taken the hogyoku from rukia's body? even if he thought she wouldn't survive he could make that the red herring...tho it did serve him to throw the SS into internal turmoil and try to get them to off each other, slaughter c46....and well it's aizen he likes things complicated
Ch223: The Scarlet Creation
yes the royal key...the royal guard...the soul king....launcher of 1000 fan theories
'we have time...it's 4 months :)' yamapls
i do love the way the manga is anchored to the seasons/time passing tho
well it's obviously gonna be momo who's talking to him right?
Ch224: Imitated Gaiety
yep it's momo...man aizen really did a number on her. the way she still talks about him, even tho he straight up said 'that person was a lie' (tho perhaps not to her or mb she totally blacked it out)
idk i think aizen's villainy is, well. it's a battle shonen so ofc it's gonna be somewhat ott but it's a mix of 'totally evil let's destroy the world' + complete narcissism + on a personal level, it's...idw say realistic, but he makes people want to believe the best of him even when he shows his true colors and idk. it's easy to see that quality transferred to irl stuff
Tumblr media
teehee i'm just a shopkeeper! ily urahara <3
nnnn love & rose as the peanut gallery
Ch225: Slip Into My Barrier
oh dear is she gonna upset it
nah...but damn ichigo you're so cool, saying "it'll be alright; i'll be the one to stop aizen"...baby
Ch226: Right of My Heart
Tumblr media
ASDLFKJ all of u pls....
ryuuken wow he's totally unscathed...
why is the moon always a crescent? it was just like that the other night; it should have waned.
anyway, uryuu and ryuuken continue to be incredibly similar. we love a generation xerox.
Ch227: The Swordless Soldier
wait is the moon reversed....oh that's hueco mundo
so did urahara say that to orihime sos that she would get captured or what. does he know about what happened with hachi and the barrier.
Ch228: Don't Look Back
is this like a rukihime ver of that john & yoko album
oh that is very rukihime well well
Tumblr media
SHE!!!!!!!!!!!!
"the 'how to' is not important. it is the 'how do you want to do it' that is" HACHIIIII
Ch229: Howling Tempest
speaking of pretty, i talk up rukia & urahara a lot but...
Tumblr media
ulquiorra is lovely
wait it's been a month? has he been skipping school this entire time? is kon in his body? what about his grades? what about his family? sure isshin knows and karin has a guess but he doesn't know isshin knows and what about yuzu?
Tumblr media
peas in a pod i see
Ch230: Dead White Invasion
oh! shuuhei!
"friends are a good thing even if they tread a different path" ukitake T_T
man shuuhei does all the work of captain and vice captain and doesn't even get a promotion for it in the end....how sadly relatable
OH grimmjow's scar is to cover the tattoo....yeah ok i get it (how many times can i repeat that haha)
Ch231: The Mascaron Drive
(why does the title page say 221....a misprint?)
Tumblr media
nnnn
lovely kubo panels....especially the last one with urahara......
Ch232: The Mascaron Drive 2
wrow so bloody grimmjow....again, i see i see
Tumblr media
redacted
10 images per post...? >:( i guess i'll have to go back to 20 chaps after this. pretend i put the kubo panel in anyway, it's there, it's beautiful, the screenshot's on my hard drive
Ch233: El Violador
falling together like that huh
candyshop.mp3
O SHIT ITS HIM
Ch234: Not Negotiation
We, / in the first, / shall never blend together. / In the second, / shall never hold the same form. / The third, / as he who has no eyes. / The fourth, / with no direction. / And the fifth, / lies in the heart.
"what you hold i your hand is the rope to the guillotine above your friends' necks. Nothing more." godDAMN does he know how to get her already
"if your weapon is 8 arms, mine is all the water in the atmosphere" DAMN HITSUGAYA!!!
Ch235: The Frozen Clutch
RUKIAAAAAAAAAAA
Ch236: The Sun Already Gone Down
idk how to say but i do like how so many of the fights just end interrupted, only to resume after everyone has a chance to level up or think about things more (or both)
but lol @ ulquiorra just grabbing grimmjow and peacing him out of his fight with shinji
Ch237: Goodbye, Halcyon Days
well i guess if it's been a month it's fine for the moon to be crescent again
"If only I had 5 lives! Then I could be from 5 different towns and stuff myself full on 5 different types of food and have 5 different jobs...and I could...fall in love with the same person 5 times"
i do think about this quote a lot. idk i feel all kinds of ways about it....
Ch238: Eagle Without Wings
oh long time no see! byakuya & ken-chan!
Ch239: Winged Eagles
TATSUKIIIII :'((((((((
i just. yeah. it would be easy to drop the high school stuff and vanish it from the plot but i just. ouch.
"Believe in us, Ichigo; don't carry the burden by yourself. That's what friends are for!" CHAD :'((((((
Ch240: Regeneration
garganta....just like the black hole in interstellar! (or maybe that was gargantua)
nnnn grimmjow impaling luppi with his hand....i would screenshot but i wonder if it is sfw enough for this website (also i am, still, out of images) it is also a brilliant kubo panel
nnnn ulquiorra's done face at grimmjow
Ch241: Silverflame
alskdjf uryuu rules lawyering PLS PLS PLS (and technically, ichigo is other things as well....helping out a fellow quincy, that's fine :D)
"that's some messed up logic." "just admit that i've found a paradox in the promise." uryuu PLS
"i'm your enemy!" ICHIGO PLS
RYUUKEN CALLING ISSHIN "KUROSAKI" & ISSHIN BEING SURPRISED BY THAT :O
dr ishida you shouldn't smoke! you're a doctor! well i guess he stresses himself out huh
"what a shitty dad" "just trying to one-up you" THEY REALLY GO LOW!!!!!!
Ch242: Two Men Are Burning
"We'll take care of this" :'))) chad & uryu so dependable!
(nnn flashback ryuuken is doing the glasses thing just like uryuu)
"shall we counterattack?" i love him
Ch243: The Knuckle and the Arrow
"My king, / we gaze upon you in the same way / that we gaze upon a peacock / and that is framed by hope, / adoration, and a bottomless something / that resembles fear"
i wonder what exactly this is referencing...aizen as king? is the peacock thing yumichika? or is it ichigo and realgetsu? or everything at once?
oooh it's a longbow....be glad you aren't in fire emblem, uryuu
and in the cover page uryuu is dressed like ryuuken too
FLYING LEGS OF PURITY URYUU PLS
(alsdlfkj the shady translator's note...'bad spanish for')
Ch244: Born From the Fear
cool_guys_dont_look_at_explosions.mp4
"Tell him the quincy are here, and that, in reality, it os not the shinigami he should fear but rather the quincy!"
WELL. TECHNICALLY. ICHIGO AND BACH /shot
path like a moonbeam eh....would it happen to be.....a moonbeam on the water..........kyoka suigetsu........
i've come to like the reverse moon
interesting that grimmjow did not have orihime heal the scar from ichigo! also....SZAYEL IS THAT YOU
ah yes teatime with aizen-sama
Ch245: The Way Without Enemies
oooh what a fancy pourover setup aizen-sama! and in what, 2007? 08? sighs the wiki won't tell me >:( my kingdom for a better bleach wiki....maybe wikipedia would have it but i'm not gonna trawl rn no time
asking the blind guy for a visual seems kinda insensitive but
grimmjow's '!!!!' well well
ooh man i can just hear the scolding tone in aizen's voice....if i were him i'd curl up in shame like those plastic fortune fish
another good reaction face from ichigo
Ch246: The Great Desert Bros
enter_sandman.mp3
yes yes...sand weak to water....just like pokemon and one piece...
Ch247: United on the Desert
is it a lil hammered down straight through the plaster that ichigo needs to rely on his friends more (and in general that reliance on others isn't weakness)? maybe. do i like it? yeah.
byakuya runs on the same logic as uryuu lmao "i brought you back but no orders after that :)" also....the filthy-looking boy line!!!! *
a lively bunch
oh this is a bit of a mirror of rukia in prison and hearing from renji about everyone coming in...."for them there is no other reason than that" :')
orihime you are loved! (and, thinking about this in a metaphorical sense, the symbolism of being captured in a prison of low self-worth and your friends lifting you out....nnn) but then going back to tasuki....do they ever tell her, and i wonder how that makes her feel bc obv she doesn't love orihime any less even tho she can't understand her or physically rescue her ah (cries in tatsuhime)
Ch248: To Live and Return to this Place again
i wonder who was faked out by all this, like thinking she really switched sides....i prob woulda been
"you know how it goes, rudolph with his nose so bright" ICHIGO PLS
Ch249: Back to the Innocence
so uryuu meets szayel....rukia meets aaroneiro..../squints who else does what. or is that later.
damn ulquiorra....it's logical and manipulative but. still flawed.
im very sure aizen know what orihime is planning....that or it's totally irrelevant given later events
Ch250: Five Ways to Three Figures
well ichigo is in a place where he's protecting someone so that's how he fights best....when does nel get her magical ageup tho
asldkfjslkd the reaction faces....gold
right, dordoni and the privaron
lsdfkj gin and tosen....give me all of them
"splitting up lowers their chance of winning, don't these kids know their limits?" "no"

My thoughts on ch. 139
Some of you may be familiar with my previous writings - I usually try to stay as collected as possible, but today's post will be different. Ever since the chapter came out, I've been reblogging a lot of rants and memes about it. Those of you who follow my blog (thank you so much, really happy to have you here! ❤) know that I didn't really enjoy this ending. I want to elaborate more on that in this post - my only advice is to buckle up, because today we may get a bit heated (I apologize in advance for the sassy approach - I usually try to stray away from that, but guess today's post is more of a stream of conciousness/rant) :'D
1. Ymir
Starting up with one of the most controversial things about this chapter. Up to this point, I felt really bad for Ymir. Her life was terrible - she was a young girl, who was enslaved and abused by king Shitz Fritz. After she was forced to run away from his hounds, she acquired the power of titans and used it to help the king's cause. For that, she was awarded with the king's seed (🤢), and eventually became a mother of three girls. Through her entire life, she was treated as a slave and a lesser-being by the king - she also died while protecting him, and her daughters were forced to eat her remains after that (🤢🤢).
It felt so tragic to see her 2000 years later, still walking blindly in the paths. It wasn't enough that she was hurt so badly when she was still alive - she remained enslaved to the abusive king even after she died. I was rooting for her to finally be freed from this nightmare - hence I was so happy when ch. 122 came out and we got this scene:
Tumblr media
I was genuinely emotional when I saw her reaction. Finally, someone expressed some authentic care for her and tried to snap her out of this blind state. She would finally think about what she wants and try to free herself from the paths because, as Eren said, she was never a slave or a goddess - just a regular person. It's just like she finally let out all the pain that she's been suppressing for all these years.
Yeah...except, as it turns out, her awakening here changes nothing. She doesn't come to any conclusions, like, perhaps, that she doesn’t want to let herself be hurt and mistreated any longer...or that she should fight for herself, try to change her fate - because, after all, her life belongs to her - not anyone else.
Nothing like this happens. Why? Because, as it turns out, she's in love with king Fritz and needs to be proven by Mikasa that she can break this bond first.
....
💀💀💀💀
Excuse me, but...what?
Okay, first and foremost...am I supposed to believe that, during these 2000 years, no one else has gone against their unhealthy affection to someone toxic and unworthy of their love? No one? 🤡 Come on, we even saw that happen in the manga. What about Historia, who thought that her own mother hitting her was a sign of love? Who wanted to believe that her father was good, despite wanting to turn her into a titan? Where was Ymir when Historia stood up for herself against her father's wishes? Or when she flew up to him and delivered the final blow against him?
On top of that...what a disappointing conclusion to Ymir's story. I hoped that she would take her fate into her own hands, and - for example - be reborn and experience life as a free person, surrounded by people who actually care about her. Free herself from paths and destroy it - not because someone shows her that she can indeed detach herself from it, but simply because she wants to.
Instead, 80% of the world population is gone, because she needed to see that Mikasa is able to "free" herself from Eren in order to do the same.
🤡🤡🤡
2. Abandoned plotlines and plot-holes
Mikasa being a Hizuru princess? Never heard of that. Hallucigenia's fate? Who cares. Eren directing Dina's titan in Carla's direction in order to save Berthold? Nah, who would want any more info on that - guess he just couldn't direct her anywhere else. The Ackerman's headaches? Pfff. The fact that Mikasa shouldn't be affected by the memory altering, but somehow still is in the ending? "I guess she just forgot that she should be immune to this". Why was Historia's pregnancy implied as relevant if it wasn't in the end? So many precious panels wasted on that, when they could be used to help solve some other "unanswered questions" instead. Ehhh...🤷
3. Blatant character assassination
There, I'm saying it once again. I have no idea what happened in this chapter but the characters are off. What about Eren - the one who has always believed that freedom was his birthright, and has been fighting and moving forward for his goals? Yeah, turns out he has no idea why he was doing all of that.
Remember Kenny's quote - everyone is a slave to something? I thought that this implication was pretty poetic in context of Eren's character. Through all his life, he sought freedom, but ironically, he was a slave to that dream...
...turns out it may have been a bit too poetic for this story because Eren is a slave to destiny. Literally - he's going on auto-pilot in order to reach that one moment in which Mikasa beheads him, so Ymir can watch and understand that she can do the same.
Nice joke...except not. Here go our main character's motivations 🗑
He casually commits unjustifiable crimes against humanity - not because he wants to be free or because he found the world beyond the walls disappointing, (...as we were led to believe). He did that because he doesn't know why - and then, he cries that he doesn't want Mikasa to ever find another guy.
:'))
Turns out Eren was somehow always in love with her too...? Yeah, weird way of showing it. Or should I say - not showing it at all.
If you read my previous writings, you know that I'm not very fond of Eremika. The way I interpreted it while reading the story: it was unhealthy, suffocating and one-sided. I hoped for Mikasa to move on and start thinking about herself for once.
Right, what about Mikasa? Has she finally moved on? Is she content with her life? Are her dreams coming true? What's her daily life after all this? Sadly, I don't have the answers. The thing we are shown instead, is how she's sitting next to Eren's grave and, once again, thanking him for wraping the scarf around her. The only thing that implies that she may be somehow still seeing other people is one bubble of text. After all 139 chapters of hoping for her character developement, that's it.
Keep in mind that all other characters are shown together - with their spouses, families and friends - yet Mikasa is still separated and alone. That's right - after she disappears with Eren's head, she's not shown with anyone else until the end of the manga.
Tumblr media
While we're on the topic of others, too...do I have to talk about the scenes in which everyone shows some level of gratitude to Eren...for wiping 80% humanity for them? Because I have no words for this.
One last note: I found the humor to be slightly out of place, too. Seriously, after all these terrible events, with so many unanswered questions and character developement of these two...Reiner is still weirdly simping for (now married) Historia and Jean is called a horse face :') Idk, but it feels somehow surreal after everything that's happened.
4. Conclusion
What else can I say...the final chapter disappointed me and I'm pretty sad about it. I'm happy for the people who liked it, but also can't help but feel like it was very far from perfect. I've been following SnK ever since 2013 and it's a bittersweet moment for me. The series had a lot of amazing moments that I'll definitely remember forever. Meanwhile, I would like to read some of the author's thoughts about the way he chose to end the story - perhaps it would clear some confusion (...although I can't help the fact that my first opinion is already formed).
Thank you very much for reading my thoughts - as always, it means a lot to me! ❤ The images used in this post are obviously not mine!

Can I just compare Bakudeku to Korrasami for just a moment
Not as in, their relationship, but in terms of fandom experience, perception and how it became Canon.
So, some years ago, LOK was on it's 4th and final season. So of course, shipping discourse was high. Who would Korra end up with? Would she end up single, be back with Mako?
Or....there was a big calling for the couple Korrasami, that is, Korra and her female friend Asami, to get together.
Now, up until the point of the finale, (and grant that I haven't watched in a while so I'm speaking in an overall sense and recalling my experience) Asami and Korra had been teaming up more and more. Korra had been really, badly, injured in the last season, leading to her isolating herself in the SWT for about 2 or 3 years to heal with Katara, and upon heading back to Empire City, she takes an abrupt turn to spend more time isolated and on a sort of spirit journey in the wild because she didn't feel ready to face her destiny and her friends and was suffering from PTSD. She later returns to EC, and to Asami, and they are close together for the season.
This all caught the attention of the Korrasami shippers who had, at the time, kind of only been casually shipping them because, hey, wouldn't it be nice? and they were slowly and steadily getting more crumbs, and the ship gathered momentum as the seasons progressed.
But lo and behold, everyone else was saying such things as:
"they're a female/female ship, it will never happen, even if you want it to" (even shippers of Korrasami were resigned to this because the precedent in youth animation in western cartoons at the time, was of course, not inclusive of same sex couplings).
We SAW the subtle development between the two and DARED to hope and dream that it might one day become canon, even though we thought it unlikely because of the trend towards heteronormativity. We saw their interactions and toiled over if they were trying to hint at something more between them.
"They're just friends. You're reading into it"
Because the "just friends" behavior of Korrasami in later seasons were:
-Asami being deeply supportive of Korra when she was injured (and for a time, disabled) Like, literally, getting on a knee, putting her hand into Korra's and saying "I'm here for you, for ANYTHING you need" kind of supportive, even offering to COME to the SWT with her. (Korra sacrificed her desire to have Asami close because she didn't want Asami to drop her duties as basically a CEO to tend to her)
-Korra receiving letters from all of her friends during her healing period, but ONLY responding, in a very beautiful letter, to Asami's.
-Korra honestly apologizing for being gone so long without writing more than one letter or sharing more of what was going on or where she went
-Asami complimenting Korra's new hair and Korra BLUSHING and looking SO charmed(and returning the compliment of how amazing Asami always looks) --there is no hetero explanation for this.
-being battle partners and constantly having each other's backs
-Asami protecting Korra from pursuing enemies while she's in the Spirit World(leaving her physical body vulnerable)
-other characters in their circles being literally like "What's going on with you two??"
-Culminating in the final episode after the final battle with Asami breaking down, confessing that she wouldn't know what she had done if she had lost Korra in that final battle(she'd even lost her father the same day) AND THEN Korra comforting her and suggesting that they, the two of them, alone, take a trip together, to get away from it all for a bit.
-It ends, when They literally walk into the spirit world portal holding hands and staring lovingly into each other's eyes as the camera pans from them into the spirit portal
Which, LET ME TELL YOU, watching this when it first premiered, for the first time, WAS AN ALMOST TRANSCENDENT EXPERIENCE. It was a soft scene, emotional, beautifully animated, and the MUSIC just hit you right in the heart. Like, they didn't even kiss to really hammer it in that THEY ARE IN LOVE, however, it was an EMOTIONAL PAYOFF and there was NO arguing that they were not a couple. Creators soon after confirmed, yes, they are both bisexual women, and they are in love.
And so, you could definitely say that Korrasami could have been interpreted as just "Very Good Friends" behavior, of "Gals being Pals", and many people DID argue that, and would later claim that there wasn't "enough build-up to the relationship". And part of the atmosphere in media back then(esp. Nickelodeon at the time) they really couldn't be blatant about it up until that ending. It was even a thing that Nickelodeon had been kind of shooting them in the foot for a while with switching around air times, and eventually taking it off air and putting it only available to view ON THEIR WEBSITE. There was a lot of fuckery with the studio at the time, and It wouldn't have been far off to think that they had issue with the idea of this series ending with two girls together romantically.
..
It just kind of makes me think of people telling BKDK, not only "They're m/m, it'll never happen in shonen manga" but ALSO anything from "they hate eachother" to "They are toxic because Bakugou bullied him(blatant disregard for any current development of Bakugou's character) and so it can never ever happen" to "Ok sure they're becoming friends again, but that doesn't mean they love each other or will by the end of the story"
When arguably, Korrasami was basically given the same dismissal.
And my dudes, it's only gonna get more intense from here.
Like, Bakugou and Izuku are friends now(again). There's no denying that. They would literally die for one another. Their relationship, and the emotions between the two of them in the coming arcs will only be compounded, with how the last arc left off and how Izuku SUDDENLY left and how Bakugou has so many unresolved feelings, and how, like Korra being the Avatar and having to save the world multiple times over(and the PTSD she got from it), Izuku is carrying a heavy burden that Bakugou is determine to help him see it through to the end without LOSING Izuku in the process. Their stories are so closely tied together and they are SET to return to each other, and it CANNOT end WITHOUT them being together, in some capacity, even if it is just platonic.
So...I wouldn't write BKDK off just yet. We're at the same spot right now that Korrasami shippers were when they were starting to seriously think that there was something canon about Korrasami.
So, Am I saying that I for sure, 100% believe that BKDK will become romantically canon? Not really; the hurdle of it being a Shonen-oriented manga being actively marketed for boys, is admittedly a huge hurdle to overcome, and I, as an American, cannot begin to understand all of the cultural barriers, or implications breaking any of those barriers would have to a Japanese audience or for Horikoshi/his career as a manga-ka.
I still don't know what Horikoshi is thinking when it comes to BKDK, he's obviously very private and all we can do is speculate on what he feels about it; there's still a possibility, however small, that he may actually be the biggest BKDK of us all, and "telling the story he wants to tell" may yet include BKDK becoming canon(that quote may also have nothing whatsoever to do with any romance, but we don't know)...But, much like I was at the point in the Korrasami tale, I'm still painfully aware of the precedent that remains in the way.
Like the Korrasami tale, though, I suppose there is that possibility that we will see something completely amazing and groundbreaking, and I will once again have that transcendent experience where an unlikely ship suddenly becomes reality. At this state in the Korrasami tale, I had NO IDEA that we were shipping the real, canon deal, and it honestly surprised me, being that I usually attach myself to something that never becomes canon, lol(*cough*Zutara).
We're in the thick of it now, we just gotta wait it out and see.

Me ranking the Alice in Borderland characters based on how they'd react to me being trans (non-binary)
12: Niragi. Man would call me some slurs and I would not surprised if he just shot me 😩 his existence is a hate crime to me.
11: Hatter. Wouldn't care but may also say something completely offensive and think it's fine.
10: Shibuki. I feel like she wouldn't care and the conversation would get a tad awkward and we never talk about it ever again.
9: Karube. He'd mess up my pronouns a couple times and he'd ask if I've had the "surgery" yet but overall would be nice and would defend me from transphobes. Very much the quote "he's confused but he's got the spirit"
8: Chota. He's a little more up to date compared to Karube and would ask me how I picked my name 😌
7: Tatta. This might just be the manga English version I read but he canonically did say something transphohic to Kuina 😩 but I'm ignoring that for tv show Tatta and he would tell me I'm handsome but then follow it up with "but no homo". Would punch a transphobic militant for me. I am 100% gay for manga Tatta so I am projecting here based on the fact I want him to like me.
6: Arisu "You're transgender? Wow...that's...so cool 😳" Ryohei
5: Aguni. This man is literally gay and has probably gone to pride or something before. He has trans friends.
4: An. She's studied science I'm pretty sure for her career, she'd pull up some stats and charts to prove that I'm 100% valid and real. Advocates for non-binary people 😌
3: Usagi. She'd hug me, maybe cry when I tell her about my family, tell me I'm beautiful. I just love her so I'm 100% projecting here.
2: Chishiya. Transmasc solidarity but also he's literally friends with Kuina he does not care and will never judge me for being trans. He'd instead judge me for being a fucking idiot 😔 would reguarly remind me to not wear a binder to any of the games.
1: Kuina, obviously. She'd be like oh same bro 😎We'd share trauma stories and discuss politics and shit and idk maybe kiss for that transmasc and transfem solidarity 😳

BNHA Common Misconceptions
I’ve been seeing wayyy too much bs on my dash lately. So I thought I’d share some of my thoughts on some Controversy™
***Spoilers For The Manga***
1. “What the HPSC did to Hawks wasn’t bad”
A government organization putting a young child through rigorous training so that he can be used as a tool is bad. I don’t know why I have to spell that out
Hawks had to abandon his real name at a very young age. That’s damaging for a kid’s sense of identity. His identity as a person no longer has any separation from his work as a hero. Being a hero is all he is now. I wouldn’t be surprised if (provided Hawks’s wings are gone for good) he has an identity crisis after this arc because he can’t be “Hawks” anymore.
Hawks is based on Lionel Messi, a soccer player recruited at a young age in return for paying for his medical procedures. I’ve seen people say that Hawks chose to be a hero. One, he was a child, young children shouldn’t be making decisions like that. Two, we know based on context clues that Keigo was more than likely living in poverty, possibly with alcoholic parents, and we literally are told that the HPSC payed for his family’s living expenses. Do you really think Keigo had much of a choice here?
I’ve seen people say “it’s just like what UA is doing”. First of all, UA is called out for being irresponsible and endangering their students IN UNIVERSE. Second, Keigo was a young child, the UA kids are 15+. There’s a huge difference.
2. “Mitsuki isn’t abusive”
Honestly when it comes to her smacking Katsuki, I could excuse it as a joke done in poor taste and not hold it over her as a character.
Hitting him WASNT just discipline tho. You should never, ever, under any circumstances hit your kid. Fuck that noise.
What I really have an issue with is what she SAYS to Katsuki. Her guilt tripping him isn’t a throwaway line either. He repeats the sentiment that he is responsible for Kamino during Deku v Kacchan 2. It’s one of the main reasons he fights Deku.
Horikoshi says that Katsuki has a good relationship with his mother. In that case, he did a horrible job at presenting that. What is written in the canon is what should be used as the basis for how we interpret her character.
3. “Shigaraki chose to kill his family/was born evil”
No...just...no. He was FIVE for crying out loud.
He wanted to be a hero, and took extra care to play with kids that had no friends. He definitely wasn’t born evil lmao.
His quirk manifested while he was having an emotional crisis. Decay is controlled by emotion so of course it went haywire.
He didn’t even know it was him doing it at first.
“But Shigaraki said he WANTED it to happen” Shigaraki is an unreliable narrator. What we actually SEE tells a very different story. He reaches out to Hana and his Mother for help. His grandparents are just caught in the shockwave. The ONLY person he killed on purpose was his father.
Now when it comes to his father, he had just beat him and locked him outside. He’s FIVE, and he has no healthy outlet for his anger and frustration. Hell, we see that in his “itchiness”, he only feels like this in the house, because his father makes him suppress his love for heroes and his dream to become one. He takes joy in killing his father because it’s the only release he’s ever experienced.
The fact that you guys forget that this is an abused child with no real control over his quirk that just got beaten and locked outside... Nope, no reading comprehension here.
4. “The League of Villains are justified/are a revolutionary group”
...Shigaraki has stated over and over again that he just wants to destroy everything. He doesn’t care about reform or improving anything. That one panel in Ch. 222, where he says he wants to destroy everything I think sums it up perfectly.
Tumblr media
He wants to destroy EVERYTHING good or bad or neither or both. There’s a newborn baby, a field of flowers , Nine, various heroes, the UA kids, etc all varying in innocence.
The rest of the league have very different goals and reasons why they continue to support Shigaraki. Twice wants to protect the only people that accepted him. Spinner just wants to have purpose for his life. Toga wants to live the way she wishes with no consequences. Compress is also here.
The only “revolutionary” is Dabi. But his views are not universal throughout the league.
Even if they were trying to improve things. They have killed countless innocent people, they’ve tried to kill the UA kids too. That’s not ok. And it’s not erased by the fact that they’ve done good. (I do appreciate them for killing the MHA version of the KKK, truly epic of you)
5. “Hawks is abusive”
It’s not abuse to manipulate someone for info when you’re a double agent. It’s kinda shitty, and you could argue that it was unnecessary for Hawks to do so in context. But it’s not abuse.
Y’all need to stop using the word abuse/abusive tendencies to describe all immoral actions
I’ve also seen people say that Hawks has abusive tendencies (as in he’s abusive in all his relationships with other characters) and...do I really need to explain why that makes no sense at all?
6. “Twice deserved to die/it was necessary to kill him”
Feel like I need to remind people that we’ve only ever actually seen Twice kill one guy and that was one of the KKK guys.
Twice isn’t evil, even Hawks admits that he is a genuinely good person. Good people don’t deserve to die.
It wasn’t necessary, and here’s why: Hawks could’ve just knocked him out or even just severely injured him. (Or the HPSC could’ve just grown a brain cell and sent more people to back him up, making it easier to hold back his quirk and arrest him)
Hawks shouldn’t have killed Twice, he only killed him because he’s been raised as a child soldier and I wouldn’t be surprised if what he told Twice about taking out villains was a direct quote from the HPSC
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Also, Hawks would’ve killed Twice with or without Dabi’s intervention
Something I do have to say though is that Hawks was right not to just let Twice go. It’s tragic because Twice WAS leaving to help his friends, but the other side of that tragedy it that his friends are terrorists. If he was allowed to leave a shit ton of people would have died (again that doesn’t mean he deserved to die either, don’t get it twisted)
The WHOLE POINT of Hawks v Twice is to make you question who the bad guy is. Both characters are morally gray and the only reason they even have to fight is because of the outside forces controlling their fates. It’s supposed to be tragic it’s supposed to be unclear who is in the right, so stop arguing about it.
7. “Bakugou is abusive/irredeemable” (I know it’s been talked to death but I still see it everywhere)
People are, in fact, allowed to grow past the person they were in middle school.
Most people get hung up on the “throw yourself off a building” line. Which is fair, but again, he was in middle school.
People also say “he hasn’t apologized yet”. Yeah? And? The story isn’t over yet. Horikoshi has already acknowledged that too. I don’t know what you want? People who like him know that his arc isn’t over yet.
I’ve seen a lot of people denying his character development. In the beginning of the series he was a bully and let his ego control him. I don’t think he’s bullied...anyone since Deku v Kacchan 2. He insults people but they obviously don’t take it seriously.
He’s also gone from preferring to fail a final exam to avoid working with Deku, to following him into battle against Shigaraki.
Also, when he actually likes and respects someone he doesn’t mistreat them. This is the same thing with Hawks where y’all NEED to stop misusing the word abuse. He was an abusive friend to Deku when they were kids, that’s it.
8. “Rei was abusive too!”
I’m BEGGING YOU to learn what the term “abuse” means istg
She had a psychotic break. She genuinely thought it was her abusive husband coming through the door, and she acted out of fear.
“Well that’s not an excuse” yes it fucking is. Not to mention that as soon as she realized what happened, she sobs hysterically because she hurt Shouto and tries to use her quirk to help him.
I genuinely don’t understand why people think this
9. “Dabi actually does care about the league”
Listen, I know it sounds harsh, but y’all need to get your heads out of your piles of headcanons.
We know next to nothing about how Dabi feels about just about anything. But we do see that he’s aloof and distant with the league, he doesn’t put in more than he needs to. The rest of the league think of each other as family. Dabi straight up says he doesn’t give a shit about them.
“What if he was just putting up a front for Hawks” Why? Why would he do that? When asked who he was he answered him. He tells him how he feels about hero society and Stain. Not to mention that he was getting ready to kill him. If he was hiding his true feelings about the league I doubt he would’ve so easily said that he didn’t care about them but rather how useful they were.
At this point it’s just wishful thinking. Based on everything we’ve seen in the series so far and everything we know about Dabi, I think it’s safe to say that he doesn’t care about them all that much. If he secretly does care about them, I’d say it’s likely that he doesn’t even know he does.
Idk why all of a sudden villain stans and hero stans are feuding over things that shouldn’t even be up for debate in the first place. Sorry if this came off as super aggressive, I’m just sick of seeing this stuff all over the place. If anyone has anything to add go ahead

Hot take: Bakugou's character wouldn't survive if not for the one he kept abusing all his life. 90% of his character revolves around his victim and yet the fandom paints him as this super developed, fleshed out character when in reality he'd never be anything bigger than a side character if not for Deku.
Also the concequences he supposedly received are just him being teased or not getting the win he wanted, no being kidnapped doesn't count, he literally got away with his shit while even been treated like a victim and the privilege to know something about Deku that isn't any of his business. And now because he sacrificed himself that one time the fandom acts like Izuku owes his ass anything. It's disgusting.
I have given up on him actually being half the decent character ppl make him out to be and the fandom reaction to him makes me hate him even more.
He's not complex, he's just a pretty boy, asshole archetype who gets nicer and has some more cooperative and ppl love to eat that shit up while making up stuff for him. He changes but he's doesn't change for what matters and definitely pales in comparison to other characters who are better written than him.
(holy shit, did they remove the character limit on asks?? omg a GODSEND)
Well yeah, if it weren’t for Izuku and how he treats Izuku he wouldn’t have anything to improve from; people only think he’s developed because he no longer outright bullies him and “””worries””” (I say in heavy quotes) about him, and “reflects” on how he treated him even though he.......... comes to the absolute wrongest, most idiotic conclusions imaginable, that put the brunt of the excuses on Izuku instead of himself, but Toshinori validates him because Horikoshi has made Toshi into Bakugou’s uwu stan and stan of the two boys’ “friendship” (completely ignoring the fact that THIS KID FOR TEN YEARS BULLIED HIS SON). He’s basically already been devolved to acting like a side character for a long time now, with his funny anger quirk pun partly intended that’s just treated like a joke at this point, just like everyone else’s character quirks, even though it would be far more interesting for him to, you know. actually get some therapy and learn to calm himself and become an actual pleasant person to be around. But that’s not what makes him “funny”, that’s not him, according to most people, so he’s always going to stay like this, a boring angry pomeranian who flies off the handle at everything for no reason, who has done the absolute bare minimum of “changing”, which makes him a perfect character in everyone’s eyes.
“He changes but doesn’t change for what matters” pretty much sums up the problem with him in a nutshell, and is the exact reason he frustrates me so much, that I’ve ranted about plenty before. Bakugou has never been viewed through the lens of a bully, an abuser, he was never set up to be that, at least not realistically, and so his development hasn’t happened in accordance with that setup either, and people don’t have a problem with it and actively praise it because the manga actively downplay(ed)s the severity of that origin story. People can ignore the reality of how seriously traumatic being bullied for ten years of your childhood, verbally and physically would be, and how seriously and with such sensitivity such a relationship and character arc must be handled, because aside from the very first chapter when Izuku and Bakugou are still in middle school, really, with the “take a swan dive off the roof” comment and others, it’s never focused on in that way ever again; ever since, it’s just been treated as a typical anime “rivalry”, that both of them need to better themselves to overcome. The story and teachers say “the two of them are so alike but they just keep missing each other; if they just made up for each others’ weaknesses and understood that they both want the same thing, they’d be stronger together!”, and Izuku HIMSELF tries so hard to reach through to Bakugou, always still considering him his friend, always feeling like he’s the one equally at fault for their relationship being as rocky as it is, when BAKUGOU!!! FUCKING!!! BULLIED HIM!!! FOR TEN YEARS. bullied a DISABLED CHILD, which again, as a disabled person who relates to Izuku and how he felt about his quirklessness, feelings that continue to affect him even long after he gets a quirk because of how he was treated when he was younger, is DEEPLY unsettling to me. You CANNOT read/watch MHA without the metaphor of quirklessness = disabled being very apparent, and so that makes Bakugou’s bullying and how it is so utterly glossed over and purposefully forgotten a hundred times more disturbing and aggravating than it already is! If this were any other shounen rivalry then yes, it could be resolved with effort from both parties, because both parties have their own personal reasons for why they have trouble getting along with the other, and the fun is watching to see how they will overcome those, but Izuku and Bakugou were never on an equal playing field to begin with; this is a bullying story, with its victim trying desperately to win over and befriend his abuser, when he owes him absolutely NOTHING and has a BOATLOAD of unresolved issues thanks to said bullying, with no outside help from adults for either of them because none of them are acknowledging it as fucking bullying. I guarantee you that if the manga went into much more painful, bleak detail and showed many more flashbacks of how Izuku was treated by Bakugou in the past, and then still continued with the “development” he’s had since, people would be unable to ignore it like they can now, and it would make all of them extremely uncomfortable like it does those of us now who already dislike him. Hori himself has said he doesn’t understand why Bakugou is so popular, but he’s able to just continue as he does with him because no one is complaining, and because he said he regrets making him so awful in the beginning, as if that magically makes it disappear as much as it already has in 90% of the fandom’s collective mind. You wanna know an actual good manga that also deals with a bully of a disabled child growing and improving himself and forming a close relationship with his former victim? A Silent Voice. Such a journey is long, and hard, and it is painful, with many ups and downs and many nasty, hateful, guilt-filled, depression-filled feelings from both sides, along with from other characters who either also partook in the bullying, were bystanders to it who did nothing, or were indirect victims as well. The bully is bullied himself after what he does, and then grows up nearly suicidal, closing himself off and struggling to be social and make new friends because he doesn’t know how and doesn’t entirely feel like he deserves it (and the story notably doesn’t go the route of “he was abused too at home and so that’s why he bullied”), and tries and fails many times to make amends with the person he hurt before he finally is at peace with himself and everyone; the victim, meanwhile, drowns in continued guilt and suicidal feelings over feeling like she’s a burden to others, both from her disability and from watching all the infighting and victim blaming and finger pointing that ensues between her old classmates when all of the nasty emotions are brought back to the surface, along with dealing with budding romantic feelings for her past bully when he genuinely starts being kind towards her and making an effort to connect with her. ASV is entirely about this complex narrative, it’s able to dedicate everything it has to telling this story tactfully and with all the time and attention it needs. MHA, meanwhile, is a shounen battle manga, and so it was never going to do this narrative and Bakugou’s arc justice, even though I honestly think it could have if Hori really wanted to, because Izuku and Toshinori’s relationship has such masterfully subtle and touching emotions and care, at least early on; Horikoshi knows how to write good, subtle character arcs. I’m not asking for something ASV level, of course not, when the series has so many other things it has to juggle. I just wanted Bakugou to be treated as exactly what he is: a former bully, who can be taught, and learn, and reflect, and change, and become a better, more humble, more interesting person, and actually become someone worthy of all the praise and love he gets, not only for Izuku’s sake, but for his own, as well. They don’t excuse his actions in the slightest, but it’s still undeniable that Bakugou himself is a victim of how the adults in his life have treated him and raised his own expectations of himself, giving him the crippling insecurity issues he has, and that they continue to harm him (and Izuku) by simply letting him continue to go on angrily the way he does, instead of getting him help and some therapy in order for him to change and heal from things like being kidnapped by villains (which is no small thing to go through!! on top of his guilt over Toshinori’s final battle!) and becoming a better person to the one he hurt in the past, and it all just makes me so sad, not because I’m all “uwu poor Bakugou”, but just cause his character deserves better, as a person he deserves better, just like Izuku deserves better than everything he’s gone through because of him. This is all just a very long-winded way of agreeing with you OP that yes, none of Bakugou’s “punishments” for his behavior mean anything because he’s punished as a rival student who needs to humble himself in order to get along with his friend he doesn’t like, not as a former(??) bully who needs to be separated from his victim. The bar is set so low, was never set where it should be, and so absolutely no progress to “better himself” Bakugou makes either will mean anything, as long as it’s never acknowledged that he needs to make amends as a bully and abuser.

An Ode To Miyazaki:
Hi everyone! So for my final paper for film, we had to pick our own director of our choosing and talk about them extensively between the attributes that make them special. Our course focused on the narrative and technical styles of directors. For my final project, I have chosen my biggest hero in the world of animation and somebody that drastically changed my life as a young child, Hayao Miyazaki. Learning about him for this project gave me so much insight into not just his films but who he is as a person. I hope that my paper is as interesting for you to read as it was for me to do research for!
1. Hayao Miyazaki, often referred to as the Japanese Walt Disney is the front runner of his animation studio Studio Ghibli. I picked him because I already have sufficient knowledge and love of his films. One of the first memories that my parents love to remind me of is my first time watching Totoro and laughing at the introduction characters. Miyazaki himself stands out for a number of reasons. Over the years, Miyazaki has made a humongous name out of himself, one of his most famous movies Spirited Away became the most popular film to ever be released in Japan and also won the academy award for the best-animated film that year. His most “popular” films (I say popular in air quotes because it is nearly impossible for people to agree on a favorite) remain the aforementioned Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke. Beginning his career as a simple animator for Toei animation, he worked as an in-between artist. It was here that he met his future collaborator at Ghibli, Isao Takahata. His first big directorial debut in film before founding Ghibli was a team effort without Takahata was Lupin The Third, The Castle Of Cagliostro. His first successful movie was one that was based upon his own manga Nausicaa of the Valley Of The Wind. The first official Miyazaki movie that was made with Ghibli was one of my personal all-time favorites that had ever been created, Castle In The Sky. For many children, especially ones with parents who are lovers of a film like mine, Miyazaki was one of the first animators that I was introduced to. His films have become classics for every fan of animation, being referenced in culture, specifically back when Disney owned Studio in Toy Story 3, Bonnie has a Totoro.
2. So, this brings up the question, how does one recognize a film by Miyazaki? You can always expect for him to be critically acclaimed, for there to be some element of magic and whimsy in the way that he animates, for there to be something to do with flight (whether it be dealing with airplanes like in Porco Rosso, the idea of flight in Howl’s Moving Castle, or a floating castle up in the sky in Castle In The Sky.), his heroines are always strong-minded and live by their own rules never bowing down to anybody, his love stories are dynamic and fulfilled, a sweeping score by Joe Hizashi, and they have a meaning about nature somewhere, mostly about why it needs to be protected.
Let’s start by breaking him down narratively. The thing that is always in every Miyazaki film no matter which one you decide upon watching, is that his female characters are always strong-willed no matter what. In many ways, I think that he writes women better than Disney does. He has gone on record saying “Many of my movies have strong female leads—brave, self-sufficient girls that don't think twice about fighting for what they believe with all their heart. They'll need a friend, or a supporter, but never a savior. Any woman is just as capable of being a hero as any man.” Sometimes, this will cause them to come across as reckless, or stupid, but in my opinion, I have always looked up to his female characters and the way that they are portrayed. My personal favorite female character that he has ever brought to life through the screen is Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle. She is strong-minded, not willing to put up with any of Howl’s dramatics, kind, an incredible adult figure for Markal, endlessly sympathetic to her friend’s plights (namely Howl and Calcifer), and somebody that I can always look up to. I spent most of my childhood looking up to characters like Kiki in Kiki’s Delivery Service, Chihiro in Spirited Away, or one of my personal favorite underrated girls, Fio in Porco Rosso. All of these female characters are independent and never let themselves be taken advantage of by anybody.
Another trait that can always be found narratively in his films is that Miyazaki is an airplane/ air travel fanatic. He absolutely loves airplanes, even to the point where his latest film, The Wind Rises was based upon the life of one of the first airplane manufacturers in WWII. Almost all of his films will involve something about flying in the air. Even with the ones that he didn’t direct and he just simply wrote. His obsession with flight is something that stemmed from his childhood and he never saw them as a thing to be used for war “airplanes are not tools for war. They are not for making money. Airplanes are beautiful dreams. Engineers turn dreams into reality.” My personal favorite of all of his flight animation is used in Howl’s Moving Castle when Howl and Sophie “fly” over the heads of all the people below them.
Narratively also one of the biggest things that set apart his films from any others is his focus on nature. The idea of protecting the beauty of nature is something that he has always stood by. A lot of the time, America tries to prove that it can make films about nature as well to usually varying results. I think that nobody can sell an environmental message quite like my biggest hero for Japanese animation. One of the main movies that focus on his will to protect nature above all else is Princess Mononoke. He always manages to animate nature in such a beautiful and majestic way no matter where the film is set.
I also think that a narrative trait of his that often gets overlooked is how beautiful the romance in his films can be. He never has a romance between two characters that feels stale or boring. I love the fact that you can pick any number of his films and the chance of there being a romance that you’ll get sucked into is a very large one. Everybody has their personal favorites, I love Howl and Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle but my best friend loves Sousuke and Ponyo from Ponyo. He has on record saying that “I’ve become skeptical of the unwritten rule that just because a boy and girl appear in the same feature, a romance must ensue. Rather, I want to portray a slightly different relationship, one where the two mutually inspire each other to live - if I’m able to, then perhaps I’ll be closer to portraying a true expression of love.” Writing romance between two characters can be a very tricky thing which is why it’s always amazing when he can continually pull it off despite everything and how many films that he has made over the years. The beauty of having both a strong and independent male and the female character is that they can both lean on one another for love and support. Probably the biggest supporter of this is Whisper Of The Heart, a film that he wrote instead of directing. The romance is what makes up the entire film. It’s a beautiful love story about how two young teenagers fall in love with each other. The romance is something that continually keeps me coming back for more every time.
Technical style Miyazaki can always be assured to deliver breathtakingly stunning animation. There is a reason why so many people leave his films starving because the food that he draws always looks so good. For me though, it’s the backgrounds that stand out above all else. It’s nearly impossible to have one favorite shot in one of his films but I as a matter of fact do have one. The most breathtaking animation in any Miyazaki film is the scene where Howl takes Sophie to see his secret garden. Everything about this scene never fails to make my breath catch. It’s such a profoundly beautiful moment and how it is animated is something that I haven’t forgotten since my first initial viewing of the film when I was seven.
Another iconic technical trait is that Disney did a fantastic job dubbing the films from their original Japanese language into English. Back when Ghibli films first started to become popular, they needed a way for an American audience to see them. So Pixar’s CFO at the time, John Lassater made a deal with Ghibli that they would dub all the films from their original language for a brand new audience. Growing up, this was how I watched all of Miyazaki’s films. I fell in love with the way that they sounded in English. To this very day, I have yet to see one of his films in any other language. I don’t think that anybody could have dubbed them better. Ever since Ghibli and Disney went their separate ways and they went to GKids the dubs haven’t been the same.
Finally, the last technical trait is that a Miyazaki film will always have a score done by his longtime collaborator Joe Hizashi. The score is such a big part of what makes Miyazaki’s films his own. They are what get you sucked in through their whimsical and magical tones; they always fit the vibes that he’s going through at that moment. There is also the element of sound. Every Miyazaki film has a distinct sound effect that will set it apart from the one before it.
3. The first film that I want to look at is my personal favorite of all his films that he has made so far if you were to force me to pick just one Howl’s Moving Castle. Released in 2004, it was the 9th film that the director came out with. It has an 8.2 out of 10 on IMDB and an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. The storyline for the movie follows a young woman named Sophie. She gets a curse set upon her by the Witch of the Waste and when she leaves home she finds the infamous Howl’s Moving Castle. This is the second Ghibli movie voiced by a Batman live action actor. Christian Bale voiced Howl Pendragon after Michael Keaton played the titular Porco Rosso.
Narratively this is definitely a Miyazaki film. From how strong of a female character Sophie is I spent most of my childhood looking up to her as a character. Strong female characters are everywhere in his films and in my opinion, Sophie is one of the strongest. Another strong factor is that flight plays a major part in this film. One of Howl’s main powers is that he has the ability to fly around. This leads to my favorite scene of flight in any Miyazaki film when Howl takes Sophie’s hand and they “fly” over the tops of the city down below them. All of his early films up until the last few were set in someplace other than Japan. This one is set in Europe, and he takes a lot of time while in the cities to show off all the different types of buildings while Sophie tours around the city.
Technically speaking this is also a Miyazaki film and holds all the titular traits of being so. The animation is utterly for lack of a better word, magical and spellbinding. It takes my breath away every time that I rewatch it. The food looks incredible, one scene that most of Miyazaki’s fans always think of when this movie is brought up is Calcifer making the food for Howl, Sophie, and Markal to eat. The dub for this film is also one of Disney’s best dubs for Miyazaki films. It even brings actors to the table that I usually would not like to see in other films like Christian Bale. I haven’t loved him in any other films than this one. Billy Crystal is a stand-out as well as my favorite fire demon Calcifer. The score is done by Joe Hizashi as well. My favorite part of the score is the main theme which has Howl and Sophie floating above the people below. The sound effect that follows throughout this film is the steady creaking of the castle itself.
Princess Mononoke was the first time that Miyazaki ever “retired”. Most of the time, whenever he tries to retire, he always comes back. A lot of his colleague's joke that it’s because he physically can’t stop working. He animated most of this movie by himself. Before Spirited Away it was Japan’s most famous film to date. The story about a young man who is just trying to erase the curse that was set upon him by an angry boar and it leads him to a place called Iron Town is something that never fails to amaze me. While in Iron Town, Ashitaka meets a young woman named San who was taken in by wolves and he finds himself caught between a war involving humans and the gods of the forest.
Narratively this is definitely a Miyazaki film. It has a strong female lead, focusing most of its screen time on how important it is to protect and preserve nature as a whole. The idea of protecting nature is such a moving part of the film, as we see what it does when man takes over the forest. We see how distraught it makes the Gods of this world and how they wish that the humans would just go away. However, you also see it from the point of view of the villain of the film Lady Eboshi, who also regularly helps lepers and people who would often never get work outside of her offering them a home and a family. I have regularly gotten into a debate with my mom over which side is “right” and which side “wrong” over the course of the last few years of me being a massive fan of this movie. She takes the side of the forest while I see Ashitaka’s side that everybody should just get along and interact in peace and harmony. Miyazaki never shoves the idea of nature down your throat. That is not what this film is. It’s instead about the beauty of what we have and learning to appreciate it.
On a technical level, this film is fantastic as well. It blows my mind that Miyazaki-san animated most of it all by himself. The backgrounds are sweeping and utterly gorgeous showing off the time period of the film. The fight sequences which make up the bulk of the film’s running time are engaging, thrilling, and fabulously animated. Mononoke’s score was done by Joe Hizashi as well. Its score is beautiful and I always find myself getting sucked into it, especially for the more dynamic scenes with Ashitaka and San. The sound effect for this film uses nature as a backdrop for brutality. Ashitaka’s arrows don’t just come out of his bow, they screech through the air.
Finally, my last film that we will be focusing on, Kiki’s Delivery Service was made in 1989 a year after his cult phenomena My Neighbor Totoro and was his fifth animated feature. Kiki is a young girl that is hoping to become a young witch in training. However, to do so she has to train a year away from home. She and her cat Jiji find a town by the sea where she learns her true strength and what she can really do to help others. Hayao Miyazaki didn't want to bore the audience during the film's end credits by using just the names. He set it up to be like a mini-sequel so that the audience would leave the theatre feeling happy.
Narratively this has all the traits that one should be familiar with and associate with a Miyazaki film. It has a strong-minded female character at the source of it that young girls can look up to and admire. As a kid, Kiki was my favorite female character of his because I loved her strength and her dedication to what she was good at. She knew that she was still young and had a lot to learn but even though she gets depressed she doesn’t let that stop her in the long run and will still save her love interest Tombo. The romance in this film is by far one of the sweetest. I love the interactions between the characters and the way that they both inspire one another to be better than they are. The idea of flight is basically the focal point of everything. Kiki finds that her best trait is that she flies incredibly well and decides to create her own flying delivery service.
Technically this also has a lot of traits that Miyazaki made a name for himself in doing. The animation is spectacular, especially for Kiki’s flying. I could watch her fly around all day and that was the idea that he was going for while making the film. The sweeping score by Joe Hizashi, especially in my favorite song A Town With An Ocean View, is something that I’ll often listen to outside of the film itself. The sound effects for the film are meant to be calming. From the first sound that you hear of the wind rolling through the reeds while Kiki lies against the grass to the waves when she finally finds a home.
4. Miyazaki as a director has inspired me since I was way too young to even remember. When I was a kid I would pretend to run around my apartment building's front yard imagining that I lived in a big house in front of a camper tree like the one in Totoro. His movies are perfect for children that “suffer” from having an overactive imagination. His movies are everything that is bright and beautiful in the world. The animation never fails to take my breath away, the characters and stories are unforgettable, the soundtracks sweep me away and tell stories themselves. His movies are something that even my parents, who are not anime fans, can watch over and over again. I think that speaks for itself. Miyazaki makes films that are art, not just animated films.
