Gail's Blorbo Showdown
On the contenders:
Tumblr media
Gwen Stacy or Spider-Gwen or Ghost Spider (or or or... She's had a lot of names lmao) is the spider-person of Earth 65, a low-super parallel universe in the marvel multiverse. She was first introduced in the Spider-Verse comic event in 2014, and quickly establishes one of the core concepts of her story - in her universe, it's Peter who dies tragically. Her stories are interesting in their own right, with Gwenom and The Life of Gwen Stacy being my particular favorite arcs, but they also have immense value as reflections on 616 narrative choices, especially the famous fridging of the original Gwen Stacy. Also, she's in a band!
Tumblr media
Parker is one of the five main characters of Leverage, a television show where a bunch of criminals play Robin Hood with the 1% and their victims. I grew up watching the show while it was still airing, and when I rewatched it for maybe the third time in 2021 I simply lost my mind and spent several months thinking only of the Leverage ot3, hitterhackerthief, all three of which were on this bracket, although she's the last one standing! Parker is the thief. She's got her own traumatized background and is incredibly autistic coded, but both the narrative and fandom respect her strengths, refusing to fall into typical autistic coded character traps.

Superboy # 1 Review
*Spoilers!*
I know I primarily post about Academy X here…but I have layers people and truthfully….X-Men kind of sucks right now…
So I am reviewing instead MY FAVORITE CLONE of the DC verse- Conner Kent AKA SUPERBOY!!
The issue starts with Conner being super villain cockblocked…
Conner is feeling “replaced” and “inadequate” at Metropolis by all the Superkids around…which is kind of dumb considering no one in the DC verse is frankly as effortlessly cool as Conner…(I mean look how many times Diana has tried and failed to rock a leather jacket…)
Conner then flies somberly back to Smallville, to bring back coffee to Ma and Pa Kent…who suggest Conner is wasting his coolness on Metropolis… (I heard Metropolis is super gentrified now anyway Conner!)
Conner decides to go intergalactic and with an unstable teleportation device- teleports to a planet that’s being decimated by meta human clones based off of Earths superheroes and Cadmus cloning! (Well that’s super convenient!)
Conner battles the clones and let’s the
Main villain- the Dominator (sounds like a BDSM Marston villain…but okay…) scenery chew for several minutes while the aliens of the planet evacuate, before really cutting it loose with his TK.
Just as Conner looks like he has won and confirms to the Dominator that he’s alone; the big bad releases ship upon ship of clones.
As Conner is regretting his choice to go at this alone- the Cosmoteers show up to kill all the clones and plan to kill Superboy!
Review:
Truthfully I am disappointed. Conner feels pretty “blah” here.
Sure, we got some of the old Superboy ego and bullheadedness with Conner borrowing shady technology and totally not bothering to do any homework on the planet or the current conflict…But I felt like this book had pretty limited humor and snarkiness that readers more or less expect with characters like Conner.
It would be like if Hellion lost his “mean girl” edge to suddenly be written more or less like Sam Guthrie…
Reading this- I felt like it was often copying Kirkman’s “Invincible” (the meta humans even LOOK like Kirkman/Walker characters!) than really being a “Superboy” comic…
The problem with Conner, much like the problem with Laura, is Geoff John’s pretty much tanked his prior personality years ago…
Where Bendis totally killed Laura’s introversion to make her a generic “Logan”- John’s stopped having Conner be a total shit. 😕
It’s weird comparing it to the 90’s solo series- I know people complain about Conner being sexualized/“jailbait” in it now and his relationship with Tana being problematic…but the series was at least a fun commentary on current pop-culture of the time. Conner kind of IS the perfect character to talk about Social Media/shameless self promotion/influencer culture…Yet this book has none of that.
Conner should frankly HAVE an edge and yet he feels pretty dang generic in this book.
Much like Deadpool and Plastic Man- I think writers really struggle with writing these kinds of characters anymore.
You need someone who can write comedy and is willing to take risks instead of playing it safe…you need someone who has an eye for social criticism…you need someone who can break the fourth wall effectively without it becoming generic or annoying…and you need someone who can be pretty creative…and I just don’t think DC and Marvel HAVE these kinds of writers staffed there anymore.
Even Gail Simone, whose Deadpool run I LOVE!…her “Plastic Man” mini several years ago was pretty disappointing and played it pretty safe, in my opinion.
Part of the problem is- a lot of these characters feel sanitized to fit into the “superhero mold” they were originally created to criticize. Where they were originally SUPPOSED to be more or less outsiders of the world they inhabited…now they’re focal characters of the universe.
I am glad however that the writer went back to Conner having TK instead of generic “Superman” abilities- I HATED John’s for removing it.
Overall I thought the art was pretty “meh”. Not terrible but not memorable either.
Con’s telekinesis looks more stylized off of QQ and other telepathy/telekinesis- which is a bit disappointing.
I was confused if the Domineer is supposed to be Citadelian? I am always surprised more isn’t done with them, since they were always pretty frightening… (and I just want Tamaraneans to pop up!)
Overall- I would have rather had Conner do something in Hawaii again or Young Justice stuff or in a Mongul “War World” type of situation or pretty much anything else than where this story is gonna go (him befriending Cosmoeers and realizing he doesn’t “have to do things alone”….
Predictions:
Obviously “befriending Cosmoeers/realizing he doesn’t have to go at it alone” story…

[Book] Crowley&Aziraphale ~P100
GOOD OMENS!!! By Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. So, the reason I picked this book was because I thought it's written by the same author as Eleanor Oliphant, by Gail Honeyman. There's a lot of similiar syllables okay and I didn't check it again💀 Only after several tens of pages I realized the writing style seems to be a bit different.
Okay. The premise is that... The last day of earth is going to happen soon. A devil was employed to bring havoc, but this one in particular have adapted with how humanity grows. Another one is an angel that's also a bit attached to the human world. Well, news is, armaggedon is going to arrive. That's the premise.
Not going to lie I enjoyed reading it, in my language, Crowley gak sopan... Like... He is a menace. I'm not too well-versed in Christian lore so honestly I was wondering if it's okay for me to read a fictional comedy book based on it but👁️👁️ The way it explains some of the atrocity happened in humankind and attributing it to the works of the devil...
I don't have lots to say tbh but I like how it made me feel like I'm watching a particular anime. Durarara, in particular. With how jumbled, ensemble-like characters who's like a chess piece standing in their initial position (Scarlett, Sable, White, the ministry, switched baby). All around while Crowley and Aziraphale wrecking havoc in the meanwhile. I'm just... very seated to see how things unfold eventually. The main cast also have something I'm super weak for, literal opposites attract trope. And lowkey why do I feel like they're going to adopt a child by the end of the book.
That's my first impression!!! I really shouldn't read this one sparingly so long inbetween each, since there's a lot of details I think and I kept forgotting why stuff happens.
OH. ONE MORE THING. I read this book in my native language, but although there's a lot of cultural thing I didn't understand, they put this footnotes to explain a bit. Which I appreciate it!!! Sometimes it's about a historic events or something about cult. I'm glad!!!

Gail Addams
Tumblr media
"The short answer to that is 'no.' The long answer is 'fuck no.'" ~ Stephen Fry ~
Basic Information
FACE/BODY CLAIM: Janeane Garofalo
NAME: Abigail 'Gail' Addams
AGE: This depends on the time period we're writing in. For reference, Gail was born in 1967.
EYES: Dark Brown
HAIR: Dark Brown; Long and wavy, but it's usually pulled up into a high bun on her head
PRIMARY OUTFIT: Jeans, combat boots, and usually a retro rock band t-shirt. Depending on the weather, she might also be wearing a dark flannel or hoodie, too.
Personality
Gail is a pretty straightforward and laid back person as an adult. She speaks her mind and doesn't really care all that much what other people think of her. However, she's not cruel, and doesn't go out of her way to say things that will upset people.
Powers & Weaknesses
Gail has all of the typical abilities a graduate of Hogwarts should have. Her magical strengths have always been in Potions and Herbology, while her biggest weakness has always been Transfiguration. Her patronus is a rhinoceros and you can read more about it here. Her animagus is a grizzly bear, which you can read more about here and here.
Romance
Gail is demiromantic and demisexual, so although a romantic/sexual relationship is possible, she’s not actively interested in either one. If someone she considered a friend were to show interest, she might be willing to see where things go, but she’s not likely to be the one to instigate things.
Where to Find Her
At her bookstore - Her store, Uniquely Portable Magic, is located in Muggle London. And for the people who know the right way to ask (and are willing to pay the price) she can find just about any book you might need.
Forest/swamp/beach/mountain - Just because Gail isn’t fond of the Wizarding World doesn’t mean she doesn’t like to experiment with magic. She is fascinated by potions and the things they can do, and she’s always on the look-out for rare bobs and bits to test in her concoctions.
Hogwarts - Gail’s time at Hogwarts doesn’t fit into any of the canon ‘generations’, and from what I can tell, the only canon student she might possibly have interacted with was Regulus because they were in the same House. However he would’ve been a 7th year while she was a 1st year. With that in mind, I would be willing to adjust her timeline for an RP set at school. I’m also open to RPs with a professor set during this timeline.
Verses
Just because a verse isn't listed here doesn't mean I'm not interested in writing it. I adore all kinds of AUs, and welcome the chance to get creative with my muses. If you've seen a verse that another of my muses has, and you'd like to see this muse in something similar, let me know. You can also check out my 'Plot Ideas' tag, too. ^_^
Main Verse:
To avoid repetition, Gail's main verse can be read about here and here.
Current/Ongoing Threads
If your thread with Gail isn't listed here it's probably because it's been long enough since your last reply that I thought you'd dropped it. Message me to let me know you're still interested, and I'll happily add you to the list (with no pressure for a reply.) ♡
Elizabeth/William/et al.:
Time Would Tell (Main Verse)
Stuff That's Good to Know Before Starting a Thread
Depending on the timeframe of the thread, Gail can sometimes be wary around other witches/wizards, especially if she doesn't know them. However, she's usually more friendly around muggles. (This is typically only the case in her post-Hogwarts years.)

Irony is realizing that had it not been for Damon and Stefan, Jeremy and Sarah Salvatore would or might've dated at some point. They were both born in 1994, which could arguably mean Gail (Sarah's birth mom) and Miranda (Jeremy's mom) were pregnant at the same time - and given she was a premature infant, we have no idea what her possible due date really was.
i mean sure i guess? Lol. it wouldn’t have sparked my interest that heavily though. I was tired of Jeremy and once the writers remembered Sarah was black they weren’t going to value her or do anything else seriously lol even with “Salvatore” behind her name. Though I would’ve liked to see more of her. Whether they did date one day or not. Plecverse doesn’t fuck with black people (or any other race beyond white) so I would’ve expected similar turn-outs regardless. Beremy went on for seasons and look how that turned out
If Sarah Salvatore/Tristin Mays became a more prominent character and got the “main character” treatment that was substantially better than Bonnie hypothetically speaking….Bonnie fans would have to see fans argue that there is no mistreatment to Bonnie or women/people of color which expands way bigger than Bonnie. But, there is a very different type of biracial between Kat & Tristin. Kat’s biracial, but Bonnie is fully black. That’s a whole different set of issues to unpack with this verse. :P

Death Battle is back in our corner of comics fandom, they’re now doing Babsgirl vs Spider-Gwen fight.
The matchup kinda makes sense, out of the Batfamily characters post-flashpoint Barbara is likely the one easiest to compare to Gwen. But it did made me think of a different kind of comparison between the two than is usually done.
In a way return of Barbara to being Batgirl could be seen as a result of backlash to the popular perception of the character boiling down to “Joker’s victim”. It is certainly an angle many of the “One True Batgirl” crowd members have been using to defend erasing her disability. Of course this ignores , I would even say deliberatelly, the work done by John Ostrander and Kim Yale and legions of writers like Gail Simone that follwoed their lead, to establish Barbara as Oracle, a heroic identity in her own right. Paradoxically, these attempts to “move away” Barbara from Killing Joke made her even more defined by it. The fact it is effectively a decision to cement work of a man as the character’s defining moment, while ignoring work of women to help her move past that, only makes the irony more visible to naked eye. When we add inherent ableism and the fact DC had to screw over royally two other characters, Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown, to get where they had put Barbara in 2011, it leaves any possibility of this decision being truly feminist, dead in the gutter. When paired with the massive propaganda game in Batman comics to portray time when Barbara was Batgirl as some sort of magical “best of times” in history of Batman, something that has started with Hush and continued all the way up to Flashpoint, it mires the decision purely into nostalgia.
Gwen Stacy for decades has been known for one thin - the Night Gwen Stacy Died, a story in which she has been killed by Green Goblin (coincidentially, often see as the Joker counterpart in Spider-Man mythos). Similiarly to Barbara the character has been ever since mitologized with a ton of retcons to the point she is nowadays portrayed as nearly a saint. And in similair vein Spider-Gwen’s popularity could be seen as a backlash against her being seen in nerd minds as just “a girl killed by Norman Osbron to make Peter mad”. But unlike DC’s very deliberate attempt at enforcing this, Marvel seems to have stumbled into that by accident - the character was originally little less than one among many new Spiders from across the Multiverse, curiosities for a big event with likely little plans to build on them further, not unlike Penni Parker or Aaron Aickman. Marvel was quick to leap on her popularity and milk it for what it was worth it but they didn’t need to screw over other Spider-heroines. I mean, yes, they did screwed over characters like Anya Corazon and Mayday Parker even in Spider-Verse itself, but it wasn’t done to push on Gwen (with exception of Web Warriors, which was poorly received even by Gwen fans). The stories of Spider-Gwen treat The Night Gwen Stacy Died more like a cautionary tale for this Gwen and underline that she is not gonna be defined by 616 Gwen. Hell, one of characters that usually is most bashed by the chuch of Saint Gwen Stacy - Mary Jane Watson - is argurably most important supporting cast member of Spider-Gwen books. In a way, as we can see in stories like clone conspiracy or Gwen Stacy miniseries, we could even read it that the people who never got over 616 Gwen’s death are not satisfied with Spider-Gwen. Likely because she is too different from the idealized version of Gwen they try to convince whole world existed anywhere outside their heads. I wonder if the insistence to push Spider-Gwen into 616 stories and the attempts to sink shiopping of Gwen with her world’s MJ aren’t editorial attempts to stop Spider-Gwen to truly growing into her own character, leaving reflection of main universe Gwen Stacy enteirly behind.
But that’s jsut my digression. Anyway, Gwen is probably gonna tear Barbara to pieces, Batfamily statistically tends to lose their Marvel vs DC matches on Death Battle. Also, I’m bitter that if it wasn’t for SOMEONE *glares at Dan Didio*  Cassandra Cain would likely have enough media presence for a match between her and X-23 be reasonable possibility to be featured on this show one day but as it is now once DB picks up Laura they’re probably gonna have her murder Damian. Through there is some thematic comparison there too, what with both of them having their character development yeeted through the window into oblivion and nuked from the orbit for good measure every time a new writer takes over the reins....

Unhinged Thinking’s Reading List for 2019
Tumblr media
Because I’m currently re-shelving my book collections sans depression cleaning and also in preparation for the last few “Happy Christmas to me” presents coming Monday, I thought I’d post my 2019 reading list that I want (or need) to read this year.
This is sort of an accountability thing for me to check back to as I only read like four actual novels last year. In my defence I did read like 100 journal articles and several academic chapters in lieu of novels, but I want to tap back into that whole reading for pleasure thing.
Also because I feel like @lovelikesummer would love some unsolicited book recommendations to add to her ever growing list 😉.
I’m a little more diversified this year (there’s even multiple poetry collections on the list!), though it’s still predominantly queer, Australian and canon texts. Links to books are even included for ease if you want to join me in my reading choices :)
Tumblr media
Queer Texts
The Monkey’s Mask - Dorothy Porter
A queer crime thriller written in the style of verse poetry. Porter wrote this when she was an in house author at CSU back in the early 1990s. It’s a really interesting bend on genre writing.
All Out: The No Longer Secret Stories of Queer Teens Throughout the Ages - edited by Saundra Mitchell
Queer fairytales written by some of today’s most prolific young adult authors such as Mackenzi Lee and Shaun David Hutchinson
All of It Is You - Nico Tortorella
Queer poetry written by that guy from that show Younger. It’s been on my to read list since early last year, so excited to dig into this one.
This Monstrous Thing - Mackenzi Lee
A queer play on the codes and conventions of Frankenstein, set in the period as Mary Shelley’s classic is published. I got this one from @sanityiscracked for Christmas and I’m super excited to read it as it’s written by the same person who wrote The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue.
The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy - Mackenzi Lee
This is the sequel to The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, which focuses on the sister of the original’s protagonist, who is a badass asexual scientist. Enough said.
Where the Trees Were - Inga Simpson
Australian indigenous novel that is more of an incidental queer text. I found this one from a list done by Readings and I was drawn to it because a) Aussie queer reads and b) it’s an indigenous text that isn’t set in post-colonial Australia. I’m looking forward to digging into this one to see if I can use it in a classroom context.
Heat and Light - Ellen van Neervan
A three part exploration in storytelling that is by one of the more prominent writers in Australian literature right now. It was shortlisted for the Stella Prize back in 2015, and won the 2016 NSW Premier's Literary Awards Indigenous Writers Prize.
General Fiction
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine - Gail Honeyman
The sister bought this for me for Christmas, and I’m intrigued as to its premise as it’s gotten some good recommendations in a lot of my circles.
The Wisdom Tree series - Nick Earls
This is a set of five novellas written by a Brisbane author that I got (and personally signed!) at state conference. He recently completed his PhD looking at the novella, and he’s really fun to listen to. The keynote that I got to listen to he outlined how he came to formulate and write each novella. Plus he introduced me to my new favourite ice cream, so that’s cool too.
Burial Rites - Hannah Kent
This one’s off of the current senior text list, and I really want to dig into it as it seems right up my alley. It’s set in 1829 Iceland and based on a true story about a woman’s last days as she awaits her execution for her involvement in a double murder.
The White Earth- Andrew McGahan
Another one from the senior text list. The premise of the novel really grabbed me. It looks at (relatively) contemporary rural Australian life and the power of land and families.
1984 - George Orwell
Yes, I am a horrible person for not having read this one I know. I did in all earnest start this last year, but I got pulled away by about seven other reading commitments and never got back to it. But there is potential that I’ll be teaching it this year and I want to gun for that opportunity because I’m a massive Foucault nerd and any opportunity for me to teach impressionable children about disciplinary power, panopticism and the surveillance state I will take.
If on a Winter’s Night a Traveller - Italo Calvino
This one’s been on my to read list for the better part of a decade, and I recently got a copy of it late last year. It explores different writing genres as you the reader tries to track down If on a Winter’s Night a Traveller.
Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck
Another one that yes, I should have read by now but haven’t. This one I might also end up teaching, so it’s more of a “well it’s been on the list but not that high up so I might as well” for the year.
Non-fiction
Note to Self - Connor Franta
This was an impulse buy at the end of last year as I remember wanting to read it when it first came out. I still haven’t gotten around to reading his first book, but this one stood out to me as it’s like a part diary, part memoir, part creative expression book where he explores the concept of self and authenticity.
Poetry
Milk and Honey and The Sun and Her Flowers - Rupi Kaur
I’m trying to get into more poetry and Milk and Honey was a best-seller from last year that from the excerpts I read whilst in line buying some other books at the bookstore were really good, so I’ve got both of them to read this year.
Academic Literature
The History of Sexuality Vols. 2 & 3 - Michel Foucault
The Second Sex - Simone de Beauvoir
Towards Queer Thriving - Adam J. Greteman
Undoing Gender - Judith Butler
There will undoubtedly be far more academic literature that I will end up reading this year, but these are the main ones that I want to make sure that I read for my studies (and general personal interest).

Aaand that’s it for the baseline reads. There’s others on my list, but these are the ones that I want to get through this year

ED BOOKS
I stole this from mpa (because I wanted to save it) but I’m going to highlight those I’VE READ... also I might add some others as time goes...
Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson (it was a good read!)
Solitaire by Aimee Liu * (Considered first anorexia memoir. Thus, there are points when EDs aren't completely understood, but still totally worth the read. Available through KU.)
Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain by Portia de Rossi (it was really good and real tbh)* (One of my faves! A memoir that really captivated me)
Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia * (Really is what it says on the tin and so much more. This memoir captures the darkest parts of EDs and is done very logically, stabilizing itself with facts that are intermixed by the chaos of EDs).
Just Listen by Sarah Dessen (Romance)
Thin by Lauren Greenfield (Nonfiction elements. Like the TV documentary of the same name, but of course, the book has more details.)
The Best Little Girl in the World by Steven Levenkron (NOT like the movie. Based on research of EDs in figure skating and gymnastics.)
Perfect by Natasha Friend
Purge: Rehab Diaries by Nicole J. Johns
Skinny by Ibi Kasliky
Loud Girl in the House of Myself: A Memoir of a Strange Girl by Stacy Pershall
Gaining: The Truth about Life After EDs by Aimee Liu (same author as Solitaire)
Identical by Ellen Hopkins * (Written in same manner as her other books, which is basically more like a poem than traditional novel format. LOVE this book and recommend the authors other, non ED books)
Letting Ana Go by Anonymous
Massive by Julia Bell
Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen (Romance)
Hungry: A Young Model's Story of Appetite Ambition and the Ultimate Embrace of Curves
She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb
Thin by Grace Bowman (memoir)
The Disappearing Girl by Heather Topham Wood (Romance, KU)
After the Strawberry by Adrienne Maria Vrettos
Purge by Sarah Darer Littman
Beautiful Me by Natasha Jennings
Hunger Point by Jillian Medoff (it was okay, the sister of mc has an ed)
Pointe by Brandy Colbert (Very dramatic. Deals with sexual abuse and also kidnapping in addition to an ED. Still not sure how I feel about this book, but a read that is very interesting, especially for those who like reading all things ballet. Also, this is nice because a black girl is not only a ballet dancer, but also has an ED, which is not portrayed enough!)
Looks by Madeleine George
Kessa by Steven Levenkron (I'd say this is probably for younger readers, but hey, you're never too old to read any book in my mind!)
My Sister's Bones by Cathi Hanauer * (Really liked this book and it isn't necessarily because of the ED part of it. I just like the whole feel and author's style)
Parperweight by Meg Haston
You Remind Me of You: A Poetry Memoir by Eireann Corrigan
Chalked Up: Inside Elite Gymnastics' Merciless Coaching, Overzealous Parents, Eating Disorders and Elusive Olympic Dreams by Jennifer Sey (Wow, that's a mouth full!)
Believarexic by J.J. Johnson
Feeling For Bones by Bethany Pierce
More Than You Can Chew by Marnelle Tokio
A Dance of Sisters by Tracey Porter
Gravity Journal by Gail Sobat
Elena Vanishing by Elena Dunkle (A memoir written with her mother)
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver (Haven't read this in a long time, but I remember liking it)
A Trick of the Light by Lois Metzger * (One of my favourites! About a male with an ED.)
Starved by Michael Somers (Another good male ED novel)
Reckoning Daze by Michael Beaulieu (Currently free kindle edition is available)
Thin (Sharing Spaces Book 3) by Alicia Michaels (This is part of a romance series and is the third book. This one focuses on the ED character, but there are hints to the ED in other books. You don't necessarily need to read the other books in the series and can figure things out without reading them first. I actually read this book before the others)
Cake Dreams: A Memoir of Survival by Hoyt Phillips * (Another male ED book. Great multi-faceted portrayal of EDs and general metal illness. Available on KU)
Not My Father's Son: A Memoir by Alan Cumming * (It's been a while since I've read it, but I recall there being an ED. The book does not focus on the ED, but it is thrown in there, adding to an already fascinating, interesting read.)
Nothing by Robin Friedman (Another male ED book)
Lighter and Weightless (books 1 and 2 of Begin Again Duet series) by Gia Riley (Romance and available on KU)
...And All Shall Fade to Black by Layla Dorine (Gay Romance, male with ED, available on KU).
Still Water: A Boys of Bellamy Novel by Ruthie Luhnow (Gay romance, male with ED, available on KU)
Four Weeks, Five people by Jennifer Yu * (A male wannabe rock star with an ED. He is 1/5th of the main characters who all have other mental disorders and have been sent away to camp to help with their various mental illnesses).
Phat (Escape From Reality series) by Taylor Henderson (Part of a series. KU)
Life-size (no, not like the Lindsey Lohan movie) by Jenefer Shute (Available through Kindle unlimited)
Love Struck (Star Struck Series) by Amber Garza (Romance series. KU).
Fake Perfect Me by Cari Kamm (KU)
Out of Breath (Exposed Series) by Hazel Kelly  (KU).
The Kaitlyn Chronicles series by Elaine Babich (Series, for younger readers. KU).
Please Don't Go by Elizabeth Benning (A bulimic sent to a residence to recover and teams up with anorexic former enemy in hopes of escaping)
Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen * (very great!! I loved this one, it’s not only about the ed, but human nature and emotions) (A classic novel that everyone interested in metal health should read).
Do or Die (Fight or Flight Series #4) by Jamie Canosa (Romance series. KU).
Hungry: One Woman's Battle and Victory over Anorexia and Bulima by Jessica Skinner (The title pretty much says all you need to know. KU).
My Perfect Little Secret by Rebecca Coppage (KU).
Anorexic: The True Story of An Anorexia Survivor Who Found Love by Anna Paterson (This is romantic, but I wouldn't call it romance. KU).
Balance of Control by Stephanie Nance
Running in Silence: My Drive for Perfection and the Eating Disorder that Fed it by Rachael Rose Steil
My Not-So Secret by B.P. Morrison (KU).
26 Beats per Minute by Dez Wilder (Male with ED. Memoir. KU).
Summer Fades by Amanda Bews (KU).
It's Never Enough (Book 1 in Never Series) by Susan Soares (Series. KU).
Restricted: A Novel of Half-truths by Jennifer Kinsel * (KU).
Chrysalis by L.A. Field, Gary Thaller * (KU).
A Slow Fade by Brooke Melius (KU).
All We Ever Wanted: Unmasking the Silent Battle by Alexandra Wnuk (KU).
Life Hurts: A Doctor's Personal Journey Through Anorexia by Dr. Eliabeth Mcnaught *
A Fork in the Road by Rebekah Wilson (KU).
Skin Deep (Stolen Breaths series) by Pamela Sparkman (Romance Series. KU).
Feeding the Heart (Heart Series) by Marion Myles (Romance Series. KU).
Anorexic Annie by Sarah Burleton * (KU).
The Downside of Being Charlie by Jenny Torres Sanchez * (Male with ED, the ED is not a huge part of the book, but also deals with family dysfunction, which I always find interesting).
The Art of Starving by Sam J. Miller * (This is very interesting. Male with ED. Deals with super powers! Though, it could just be the ED causing the protagonist to think he has powers, but I'll let you be the judge!)
Skinny Boy: A Young Man's Battle and Triumph Over Anorexia by Gary A. Grahl
It Was Me All Along: A Memoir by Andie Mitchell * (about binge eater who lost weight)
Safety in Numbers by Brittany Burgunder *
Skinny: She was starving to fit in... (False reflections book 1) by Laura L. Smith (Currently free kindle edition is available).
When You Fall by Alex Karola * (through Wattpad. Not finished yet, but is a great read!)
Inner Hunger: A Young Woman's Struggle Through Anorexia and Bulimia by Marianne Apostolides
Empty: A Story of Anorexia by Christie Pettit
Inside Out: Portrait of an Eating Disorder by Nadia Shivack
Not Otherwise Specified by Hannah Moskowitz *
All Good Things Die in LA by Anhoni Patel *
Jane in Bloom by Deborah A. Lytton (Another one for younger readers. Still, a nice read)
Gravity Journal by Gail Sidonie Sobat
What I Lost by Alexandra Ballard *
This Impossible Light by Lily Myers (told in verse)
Sad Perfect by Stephanie Elliot (the girl has avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder)
Beautiful Bodies by Kimberly Rae Miller * (this is a KU book and is a fairly new release as of 7/28/17. It is about disordered eating and chronic dieting, not a full blown ED; however, I still enjoyed it and recommend it).

Staving in the Search of Me by Marissa LaRocca
Feast (True Love In and Out of the Kitchen) by Hannah Howard
The Solitude of Prime Numbers by Paolo Giordano (the mc is anorexic but it’s not focused on it only. This book is about two outcasts who connect to each other and its effect of it in the course of their lives)
The Vegetarian by Han Kang (it’s very good and wild. It also tackles on feminism and societal issues as well)
Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki  and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami (it’s a great book. The ed is not the main point but there is a character suffering from one)

the Crew - people
One of several groups of teens that tend to hang around together, the Crew is not as... hardcore as other groups. They were one of the first groups of teens to be known, before we really understood that the vast majority of the system falls within the teenage range.
rayna lynn is 16 and is Donna Marie's twin sister and was one of the first of us to make herself known to main Renee in 1999.  She had often fronted when main Renee couldn’t handle it, and her thing was games of all sorts, especially cards and video games.  She’s very much the tomboy and is also prone to wrestling with people. She’s nominally the head of the Crew. When she first became known in 1999 she was often seen with another, Selena (different from Selena of the Overseers).  Selena eventually changed her name to Selene to separate herself from the associations most had to the name “Selena”.  rayna and Selene called themselves the “Gruesome Twosome” and would often post that way at a message forum we frequented at the time.  An event in the fall of that year (1999) involved a traumatic blending and Selene was one of the ones involved with that.  rayna took the loss hard.  rayna looks a lot like our real life daughter but with dark blond hair and hazel eyes.
Kayla aka Kaylana has been known to sign posts either BWA (bitch with attitude) or DWA (dyke with attitude). She's 15, freely calls herself a dyke, is as much of a tomboy as rayna and was the one most involved in the marching band when we were in high school.  She loves to watch DCI (Drum Corps International) competitions and has really hated the fact that we didn’t get to see our sons march in marching band.  She’s red-headed with green eyes and the temper to match.
Despair is an age slider who ranges between 13 and 17, usually hovering around 15.  She is depressed almost all of the time.  She sees the world in black and white and shades of grey. She tends to write free verse poetry and has a certain way with words when journaling.  She stays mostly to herself or can be found with her sister ‘Kat. Her other sister is Jackielynn. Despair is dark skinned with black hair that she wears over her dark dark eyes.
Cara and Casey spend much of their time inside.  They are both 15 and are identical twins.  They have been known to come out when a song they know is on and they like to dance.  They are bouncy and full of energy.  They are also mischievous and like to play jokes on people.  But only in fun.  Neither of them seems to have a mean bone in their body.  They are both petite brunettes with brown eyes.
Alex15 is brother and protector to Alex5.  He is 15, as in his name.  Both boys came about because of certain things that happened usually involving physical abuse of some sort.  They were also often front when the girls felt that they should be a boy instead.  He has not actually fronted since our early teen years.  He and his brother are both white with dark hair and dark eyes.
Terri is 15 and we don't know hardly anything about her other than the fact that she is there.
Alejandro first became known to us in 2003 during one of our hospital trips.  He’s 15, he’s queer, and he has a tendency to flame.  He likes to dress up, is usually one of the ones who can actually put on make-up, and he’s got pretty good taste.  He’s very shy, and tends not to speak much. He’s black with very short hair and dark eyes.
Matthew and Marcus showed up with Todd and Tyler sometime in 2004.  It was a shock to main Renee who had always maintained we had very few males in the collective.  The four of them showing up was just part of something that proved her very wrong.  Matthew and Marcus are identical twins, are 17 and both have a noticeable southern accent.  Matt loves to read and Marc loves to sing.  Todd and Tyler are identical twins and are 16.  We don’t know much about them except that they can joke with the best of them and they tend to try and cheer people up.  All four brothers are biracial, again with dark hair and dark eyes.
Bitch #2, so called because Kayla had already been using BWA, is antagonistic and proud of it.  She’s somewhere between 16 and 19, ornery, short tempered and is often impatient with people in general.  If she had her wish we would live like hermits.  She doesn’t really like people much and certainly doesn’t like to put up with any kind of emotional display.  She looks much like the body.
Tony (aka Anthony) is 19 and was one of the main fronters for a while.  He used to just be the guy who sat in the corner of the Front Room and listened to Linkin Park. In 2005 he took charge of Bane and Blade when Malice wanted to kick the shit out of Bane for daring to say what he thought about the father.  Tony kept the twins with him to prevent Malice from getting her way.  He started being a regular fronter late in 2006.  He and ShayRisa are the two who used to front the most frequently.  Tony tends to try and act tough, and he’s protective as hell of those he cares about. Although he was first freaked out at the idea of being a “mom”, he has come to adore our outside kids.  He was one of the ones who was called to the Kids Castle summer of 2008 to help a group of children who had come forward with new info about our parents.  Unlike many of us, he definitely has the ability to get angry and to express it.  Sometimes the way he expresses it isn’t the best, but he’s been trying really hard not to do anything that will hurt the body.  He’s a pretty complicated guy.  He’s white with black hair in a skater’s cut and dark green eyes.
Daniel, whose age we have recently learned is 13, carries some very specific memories of the father.  He isn’t very well time-oriented and only sort of knows those we are around.  He seems a little vague, and when he first showed up he inadvertently scared most of the kids in our system.  We later learned that they weren’t scared of him, but of what he carried.  Daniel is also bi-racial with dark hair and green eyes. He is linked to the child Daniel in the Kids’ Castle the same way Alex5 and Alex 15 are.
Teesha, 14, is another of the video game teens.  Other than knowing that, we know next to nothing about her.  She looks like the body does.
Abby and Gail (both between 14 and 16) are both members of the graphics team.  They are usually behind pattern design.  They do patterns for more than just computer graphics.  They also help come up with our quilt patterns and with our beading projects.  Those of the graphics team are in general fairly artistically inclined.  If it’s any kind of arts and crafts project, the graphics team most likely has a hand in it.  Both girls are white with brown hair and brown eyes.
Kyle, Kevin, Kristin, Kylara and K’Tara all came forward at one time.  We refer to them as the K-clan and Kayla is in charge of them.  The five of them are 15 and were the ones who were the most involved with our first boyfriend.  Of all of them only Kevin is really oriented to the here and now.  He is the head of the graphics team.  His is the final say so on any graphics project.  He is also the coordinator between the graphics team and the code rats (web design).  He and Tony often butt heads when trying to design a page, usually because the graphics team wants it to look one way and the code rats are telling them they can’t code it like that.  Kevin tends to get obsessive about graphics projects.  He and other members of the graphics team have the ability to completely block out awareness of the body when they are focused.  We have to sometimes yell pretty loud to get his attention and get him to give the body a break.  All five of them are biracial with skin tones like our outside children and dark hair and eyes.

hey! I saw that you made a list of lgbt oriented comics from marvel and I thought it was really cool, I was wondering if any member could make one but from dc? thanks anyways!!
Hello! We made a DC list before, but I feel like I can make a better one so here we go:
Those who came first in the list are the ones I think are more relevant, have better representation or a larger number of LGBT characters, but that’s in no means a perfect ranking. You can also check out our recommendations tag.
DC Bombshells - The. gayest. comic. It’s a good start because you don’t need to be familiar with the DC universe to read this one. It’s an alternate WWII universe where Batwoman saved Bruce Wayne’s parents and he never became Batman, so the main heroes and the “Justice League” are all female. It features many DC characters (mostly women) that are already LGBT - and yes all the letters - in the main universe, like Batwoman, Wonder Woman, Harley & Ivy, Constantine, Alysia Yeoh, Dr. Victoria October etc. but also other characters are in wlw relationships in this verse, like Vixen & Hawkgirl, Doctor Light & Big Barda etc. It’s written by Marguerite Bennett, who’s an amazing author and a queer woman, so her books always have good representation.
Batwoman (2017) - Speaking of Marguerite Bennett, Kate Kane’s current solo comic is also written by her. In my opinion, one of the best DC Rebirth titles. Kate is DC’s most iconic lesbian and such a great character. If you’re not familiar with her, you can start with Batwoman: Elegy (Detective Comics #854-860) or read her appearances in chronological order - here’s a list that will help you.
Midnighter (2015), Midnighter and Apollo (2016). Written by Steve Orlando, who’s openly bisexual. Midnighter and Apollo, aka the world’s greatest couple, were introduced back in the 90s, on the Wildstorm comics - a former DC imprint. The Wildstorm characters are now a part of the main DC universe. You don’t have to be familiar with the characters to read this two comics, but you can check out the original Authority, which also features two bi women as leads. Here’s a Midnighter reading list, if you want to know more about this awesome character, and an Authority masterpost.
Constantine: The Hellblazer - Written by bisexual author James Tynion IV, this is the comic with the best representation of Constantine as a bisexual character (because that’s what happens when LGBT writters write LGBT characters). And if you want to know more about him (which you should, he’s DC’s most iconic anti-hero), check out these reading lists: x x x. The original Hellblazer is a must read but please note that he only started being written as bisexual many years after his first appearance. I can make a Bi Constantine reading list if you’re interested.
Secret Six (2006, 2008, 2015) - Written by Gail Simone, it has a lot of LGBT characters (as her books usually do!). Scandal, Catman and Porcelain are some of them. Personally, it’s one of my favorite comics and I believe that team deserves more popularity.
The Movement - Another comic by Gail Simone, it also has a lot of LGBT characters, including the couple Sarah Rainmaker and Holly Ann Fields.
Detective Comics (2016) - Also Written by James Tynion IV, it features Batwoman in the main cast. Other characters are Harper Row - a bisexual blue-haired girl, and Dr. Victoria October - a wonderful trans woman. (And i personally feel like he wants to reveal more characters as gay or bi really soon - but that’s just speculation).
Demon Knights  - Really underrated comic. I’ve only read a few issues but it seems great. You don’t have to be familiar with the DC universe. This comic is set in the Dark Ages and features genderqueer character Sir Ystin/The Shining Knight and Exoristos, a lesbian amazon. It also features Madame Xanadu, who’s bi/pan, but I don’t think she’s portrayed as such in this title.
Wonder Woman (2016) -  (Greg Rucka’s Run - issues #1-25). In a subtle way, Rucka portays Diana’s homeland Themyscira as a - in his words - “queer society”. It’s almost certain that Diana has had many lovers on that island. It also features a romance between Etta Candy and Barbara Minerva (aka the villain Cheetah). This may be a controversial suggestion since the representation isn’t as “explicit” as in other comics, but it’s there and it’s a great run.
Deathstroke (2016) - Because Joey Wilson deserves more appreciation. Introduced in The New Teen Titans back in the 80s, he was originally intented to be gay by his creators, but they gave up because they thought that it would be a stereotype, since he’s a sensitive, artistic guy. However, author Priest decided to make him bi/pan in his Deathstroke run. It’s another controversial suggestion, since he’s revealed as bi/pan by having a relationship with an older man, plus he’s a “no labels” kind of person… But the thing is, he is a bi/pan disabled character and I love him. Deathstroke is also considered by many people the best of DC’s current titles.
Outsiders (2003) - It features bisexual amazon Grace Choi and lesbian superhero Anissa Pierce. They’re girlfriends.
Superwoman (2016) - It features adorable couple Traci 13 and Natasha Irons and, more recently, lesbian alien Maxima.
Deadman: Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love - A graphic novel starring a bi/pan character who falls in love with her nonbinary friend.
I hope this helps!

Sketchy thing I did to decide if I could make simplicity 8159 work for asylum (providing I can go of course :') ) A little bit inspired by my steampunk 'verse a little bit inspired by the wonderful Gail Carriger's badass ladies. The main thing would be keeping it sufficiently steampunk, me thinks

JJ Project - Tomorrow, Today “A song you can relate to if you’re wandering in your youth.” This statement was taken from a comment section in a post from pannchoa about JJ Project’s latest comeback song, Tomorrow, Today. The song 내일,오늘 (Tomorrow, Today) released last 31st of July (Monday) is a mellow, pop rock alternative type of song which is very laid-back or what people may describe as “feel-good” song. The music video which showcases the simplicity and beauty of Hokkaido, Japan (where the MV was shot) also adds an aesthetic appeal to the overall turnout of the song. Watching the video for the first time, I was already moved to tears not only because of the beauty of the video or the feels of seeing JJP comeback after 5 years, but mainly because of the meaning of the song. The message of the song is what everyone can relate to. As a lot of ahgases would say, it is a song which speaks to them in a deeper level. This is what I have felt while listening to the song. Delving into the common troubles of the youth, it is not just about being lost. The song ponders about our choices, figuring out life, and finding what we really want. It gives us a glimpse of what is really happening in our world and what humans are facing. Living in a world where everything is fast-paced, we are forced to choose, and in the process, a lot of time, we fail to consider some things, and forget the main reason why we are making those choices. We choose for the sake of choosing. Here are some lines/verses in the song which really caught my eye and got me reflecting about a lot of things in my life: “My visions and dreams are fading away You keep pushing me while my eyes are half-covered. Telling me to pick which one to go with, Somebody let me know, Tell me which way to go, Cuz I don’t, don’t, don’t know Today I hesitantly answer the questions again, That I don’t even know the answer to Is it this way or that way My decisions are getting scary With an unstable state of mind, I’m confronting the next decision What will I be at the end of the road? Will I regret looking back later?” As kids, we have those hopes and dreams we keep close to our heart, vowing to make them all come true when we become adults, but growing up, we realize, some of these dreams may be impossible to reach. We wake up to the how the reality of the world we live on works. How harsh the society we live in is. Our dreams either get crushed or forgotten. Forgotten because we often sacrifice to follow our dreams for practicality and comfort in life. You want to be a painter? A writer? Society says no because according to its standards, you’re not gonna be successful. It’s not a high paying job. Why not try to be a doctor or a lawyer instead? Oftentimes, we encounter these kinds of situation where our dreams are sacrificed and forgotten. Today’s society is all about having your life figured out, and sometimes, this starts even at such a young age. Having your own identity. And because of this, we have to comply, even though we are still struggling to find our purpose. We lost our identity because society keeps directing us to do this, do that. We become lost. Confused. We’re like those fallen leaves getting drifted by the wind. We go where the wind goes. We go with the flow, join the bandwagon. We lost ourselves because we become too overwhelmed with everything. In our lives, we always come at crossroads. This isn’t just a phase being experienced by the youth. No matter how old you are, 20s, 30s, or even in your later adult life, there are times when you just don’t know what to do. We become clueless. We don’t know what to do with our lives anymore. We know what we want but we don’t know if can achieve them. We have to quickly decide which path to take, what career to take, because if you take too much of your time, you get judged. And at these moments, we just say “f*ck it, I’m doing this,” even if we aren’t sure if will impact our future in a good or a bad way. We have to choose without thinking. We become reckless with our decisions. We have these thoughts plaguing our minds, if I choose this decision, will I regret this later on? There is uncertainty lingering inside us. And it stays inside us, growing slowly and slowly until it occupies most of our thoughts and affects our feelings. We become suffocated. We feel anxious about ourselves. In this world where everyone aims for perfection, we are expected that the decisions we make are also perfect. We become so blindsided by "the perfect life" that we forget what we really want. Tomorrow, Today is a song which ponders on the reality of life and how the society operates. It is a song that speaks to everyone’s inner struggle. A song that makes you reflect your life. It makes you ask yourself, “Is this really what I want?” “Have I been living well?” and I commend JJ Project (and JYP) for penning and producing a song which speaks so much about life and the everyday struggles people go through. -Antonette Gail ♡
