16. Do you research for your fics? If so, how deep of a rabbit hole have you gone down by accident when researching?

Depends on the fic but generally I do at least a little bit.

Deepest rabbit hole I've been in was probably a while back when I was doing some research for the Ashmaker AU. I started at Fire Nation locations, went to the social class structure of the Tang Dynasty, went to the Bushido code and the history of the Japanese shogunates, and ended up at "Black Sam" Bellamy via Zheng Yi Sao (aka Ching Shih). I still don't know how.

This was all so I could give Lt. Jee a minor backstory and a reason he was busted down from Senior Captain to Lt. Commander.

I'd love to know more about your post-canon Mai fic if you're willing to share! I saw a previous post from you about how it's nearly ready to publish - is it fully written? How long have you been working on it? What's something in particular you're really excited about? Is it Maiko? (You don't have to answer all or any of these questions, of course lol. Just anything you feel like talking about, if you feel like talking about it!)

Truly thank you so much for asking @myargalargan I have been working on this thing for the better part of the past year so the brainrot is sooo real, and I have been dying to gush about it 😆

I'll post the summary here and then everything else below the cut because you gave me the opportunity to ramble and I will happily take it haha

Mai had always wondered what it felt like to be stabbed by the point of her blades. The 100 year war is over, but not everyone is happy.  Mai’s not happy either, but she’s beginning to suspect that her discontentment might be self-inflicted.  Fortunately, an old Master sees her potential. OR Mai finds her place after the war.  And gets a sword.

I've spent the last year plotting, outlining and drafting all 13 chapters - so in a way yes it's fully written, but also no because I edit everything to death. I finished the rough drafts at the end of last year (and some of the chapters are still truly rough but that's what second drafts are for i guess). I'm currently working through the second draft of chapter 5 which is the goal I gave myself to reach before I started publishing to give me a buffer of a couple of chapters at the ready. So it's close.

I'm really excited to get to the ending honestly and how everything comes together. The story came from a mix of scenes I had made for other fics that I really enjoyed writing, but I couldn't make sense of the rest of the plot so I ended up abandoning those wips. So it was really exciting finding a place for them that made sense and seeing the full picture with those scenes. And then also it was important for me to put Mai in a spot after the war that I think she would actually enjoy instead of just blending back into the background of royalty and politics.

I also really enjoyed writing her relationships with other characters, especially with those she's closest to - Zuko, Azula, and Ty Lee. I know you're a Sukka/Sokka fan so you should also know I am continuing my Mai & Sokka besties agenda and there's a fun little arc where they get to work together full of shenanigans (and Suki also gets to knock some sense into Mai)

And yes, it is maiko because I am incurable. I'd say it's:

A-Plot: Mai finding her groove

Followed closely by B- Plot: Maiko romance

Distant C-plot that could probably have been better developed but then I would never publish: some background political scheming that moves the plot forward

The most important rule is to have some Sukka fun! But here's a few guidelines to help us all have a good time

1) First and foremost, to submit a work for Sukka Week, please tag @sukka-week in your post.

You can also use the #sukkaweek and #sukkaweek2023 tags on your post, but the best way for me to see your submission is to @ this blog (and keep in mind that this blog has a hypen; there's another another blog without a hyphen so just watch out for that).

2) Sukka (romantic relationship between Sokka and Suki) should be the primary ship in your work.

Including other ships in your work is totally fine, but they shouldn’t break Sukka.

For the purposes of this event, poly ships that contain Sokka and Suki don’t count as Sukka. Stories where Sokka and/or Suki are in another relationship towards the beginning but Sukka is endgame are okay! However, the work should contain more Sukka than it does the other ship(s).

3) It's okay for the work to focus primarily on Sokka or Suki as independent people, as long as Sukka appears somewhere (and fits the criteria above).

For example, if I wanted to write a fic that's mostly about Suki's character development after the war, and Sokka appears in less than half the story, but they're still a couple and they think about each other/write to each other/visit each other once in a while, then that still fits for this event!

Or, if I wanted to draw a picture of a grown-up Sokka and a grown-up Foo Foo Cuddlypoops charging into battle, and I put Suki's face in the background with big pink heart eyes, that would also fit for this event!

4) Please tag all your content appropriately!

This includes mature or potentially triggering content like NSFW and violence, as well as content like additional ships.

5) Yes, NSFW content is allowed.

Intimate content should be consensual in nature, and please make sure to follow the guidelines of whatever platform is hosting your work.

As an FYI, this blog will use the tag #spicysukkaweek for any NSFW content in case you’d like to block these types of works.

6) Submissions should be previously unpublished.

One of the goals of this events is to inspire people to create brand-spankin’-new Sukka works! If you would like this blog to promote your existing works, I’m happy to do so during the lead-up weeks prior to the actual event week. Feel free to shoot me an ask or DM with a link.

I've been in fandom for just over 2 years, and I've met some incredible people along the way. Here's what I love about them:

@neurologicaldamage as one of my oldest fandom friends, I have long enjoyed screaming excitedly at each other over new ideas or plot developments in existing fics. It was a thrilling ride waiting for each update of "These Scars of Ours". Your angst is the most exquisite type of pain I will gladly subject myself to over and over again.

@authorjoydragon JOY! My beloved multishipper. You are one of, if not the, biggest reason I have blossomed into the fully fledged multishipping trash that I am today. Your fics are like the sweetest, fluffiest piece of cake I can enjoy. I can't even remember the first fic I ever read from you. I definitely remember "Accidental Rendezvous" though, and I am forever honored you commissioned me for it! @orangepanic you took someone who wasn't even that into the LoK fandom and gave her a whole new OTP while she was on hiatus from Zutara. You are the captain of Irosami, and I am humbled to have become your first mate on this wonderful little ship. I have adored everything that I've read from you so far, but I am deeply enjoying "Hotman" and "Starvation Paradise", as well as your new gift for me, "There Was Only One Bed".

@homeagainrose Not only are you a talented writer, you are also an endless well of knowledge that has become invaluable to me (and many others, I'm sure). @asajjvxntress You were one of the first Zutara writers I stumbled across. It was "I've Got A Dark Alley" if memory serves, and definitely contributed to my love of modern AUs. I fell in love with "New Girl" and then watched the show, which is now one of my favorites and it's all because of you! Your output feeds our ship so well, and we are honored to have you.

@myargalargan O Captain, Our Captain of the lovely Sukka ship. Your writing is so darling. Sukka is so wholesome, but somehow it feels even more like that when you write them. You take a side pairing and make them a main pairing. "Our Little Remedy" was much anticipated, and I must thank you for introducing all of us to...you know *wink wink*.

@krastbannert My dude, the way you write is so...hauntingly captivating. Even on your happiest fics, there's always this slight air of melancholy that I just adore. The way you get into a character's head is so amazing, too. It feels like you've cracked them wide open and studied them to understand them as well as you do. "Brave Soldier Girl" captured my attention with just one chapter. @heavensenthearty you give 100% to everything you do with your writing. You have such a poetic way with words. It doesn't feel like first person works often with fanfic, but you always make it work perfectly. @its-sooz-again Where do I begin? The pairings, the topics, the characters you explore are sometimes things I never would have thought of, but when I read you writing (or look at your art) I think, wow, this just makes sense. I've always loved Jet, but you've given him such a profound sense of humanity for me that has deepened my love for our favorite traumatized orphan of war. "The Break in the Bend" lives rent free in my head.

@lone-star-ranger you write some of the best fluff! The way you seamlessly weave canon into AUs, AtLA with LoK, Azula with Star Wars, is incredible. You've gifted me so many wonderful fics and have truly become my first mate on the S.S. Yuten, for which I am always deeply indebted to you. "Perks of Matchmaking" is short and sweet, and I'm forever honored that my gift for you inspired a fic that you gifted to me. I've rambled on long enough, and thank you if you've made it this far. It’s funny how creativity works.

About two years ago, I got an image in my head that was so persistent, it drove me to write and publish fanfiction again for the first time in over a decade.

About six months ago, I got another image in my head, and this time it was so irresistible that it compelled me to figure out how to do digital art, which was almost entirely new to me.

Anyway, all that’s to say that, I guess Sukka is a pretty effective muse, and yesterday I finally finished a drawing.

It’s too spicy for tumblr so I put it up on AO3, but here’s a little sneak peek.

37. Promote one of your own “deep cut” fics (an underrated one, or one that never got as much traction as you think it deserves!). What do you like about it?

Other than the sort of cheesy title, I'm proud of my Tangled fic--I love New Dream and the Lance & Eugene friendship, so that was fun to write. I always look for fics where Lance and his relationship with Rapunzel is a main factor in the central plot and even though there are some really great ones, there are so few that I wanted to write one myself. I feel like I was able to incorporate some interesting aspects of Rapunzel's character, such as how her trauma impacts her relationship with her mom. Also I felt like it was very important to include Pascal and Maximus in some way, because they get ignored a lot, lol.

42. Have you ever received a comment that particularly stood out to you for whatever reason?

Honestly @myargalargan commenting on bruise belies the break made me SCREAM because they are basically the Sukka queen! (I am still working on that by the way, I promise! I have 2/3 of the next chapter done and hope to post it soon.)

Also, SO many of the comments on shadows & steel warmed my heart!!! Of course @shrinkthisviolet and @ohsalamanders' commentary was vital to the piece, and hearing from so many writers I love like @raspberrylimonade, @avrelia, annavale23, starbunny86, Dilittantism, etc. was incredible. I think my all-time favorite comment journey though was this from @savethelastdan (Shespitsfire on ao3) when she was live-reacting:

"You would have simply found her waiting on your bed, draped in silks, ready for you to unwrap.” Somebody's been reading Lo and Li's smutty bodice-rippers in her spare time

"If they’d been caught in a forced marriage, that reunion would have been far more romantic than the one he had just described. They probably would have run away, rejecting the archaic tradition of betrothal altogether. Two heart-eyed outlaws shunning sexist ideals, enjoying plenty of meat and sarcasm along the way" looks like Zuko's been catching up on his own collection of romance novels

"The way the lanterns illuminated her mouth as it moved was fascinating, and he wondered if she knew this. If she was using the fact to her advantage." Maybe I'VE been reading Lo and Li's bodice rippers in my spare time because this is *chef's kiss*

Honestly if you read comments on fics that aren't yours I highly recommend you take a look at hers for each chapter because she is HILARIOUS.

9. Tag 3 fic writers you think are underrated/unknown in the fandom/fanfiction community.

@lone-star-ranger. He's kinda migrating to the Star Wars fandom lately, but all of his ATLA stuff is incredibly well done, with some very unique stories. (His Star Wars stuff is really incredible, too, although I haven't read as much of it.)

@myargalargan. Her Sukka blog is pretty well known, but it seems like her writing isn't quite on the same level, and it is fantastic. One of the best Sukka writers out there, and up there, in my opinion, among the ATLA fandom's writers.

@twinkle-toph. Couldn't go without mentioning at least one of the Kantoph crew. I don't know about her Tokka stuff, but her Kantoph stuff is incredible, and deserves all the recognition in the world.

(To be clear, this is just three of them. I could name another...probably thirty or so, you included.)

13. Do you outline your fics? How much of a headache would someone get if they just looked at an outline of yours without reading the fic?

Oneshots, not at all. Multichapter stuff, I'll...do some outlining, but not very much, usually. I'm starting to do more and more just so I can actually keep track of things and, you know, tell a half-decent story. The outlines I do have are...probably rather headache inducing, not gonna lie.

33. What do you like writing better: one shots or multi-chapter stuff?

Oneshots. Much easier to do. Admittedly more instant gratification, which...yeah, isn't always good, but still. They're just easier for me to actually get done, realistically. I say that like I'm not stuck on...well, all of the oneshots I'm working on, at the moment. Meh. Minor details.

Anyway, enjoy this tiny Sukka ficlet that I cooked up on the fly as my valentine to you!

“I’m telling you, he forgot,” Suki grumbled into her phone, kicking off her heels at the front door. “Our first Oma-Shu Day as a married couple, and he doesn’t even acknowledge it once. Can you believe that?”

“Hey, chill out,” Katara chuckled on the other end, “This is Sokka we’re talking about. He’s, like, the ultimate corny romantic.”

“He definitely was while we were dating.” Trudging up the stairs, Suki pulled her hair free of its bun. “But now that we’ve tied the knot, it looks like your brother is going to just coast for the next sixty years.”

“Nah, we both know Sokka isn’t like that. My guess is that he’s just trying to trick you into thinking that he forgot so he can surprise you or something. Maybe there’s a giant stuffed platypus-bear waiting on your bed! Or a super-sized box of chocolates! Or a whole garden’s-worth of roses!”

With a frustrated snort, Suki shook her head as she stepped across the landing to her bedroom door, giving it a light nudge. “Please stop trying to get my hopes up. He’s probably going to come home late from work and try to apologize with a…”

She trailed off as the door swung open.

“Well helloooooooooooooo!”

The phone slipped from her hand, landing on its side with a solid thunk as Suki just gaped at the masculine figure sprawled out on the bed.

“Suki? Suki?” came Katara’s voice from down at her feet, “Is everything alright? Did you…? Ah, shit. He’s naked, isn’t he? Damnit, I should’ve known. Alright…well…I’ll just talk to you tomorrow.”

Finished Fic: Starvation Paradise

And it's done! You guys, this fic took me TWO AND A HALF YEARS but hey who's counting? 80,000 words of blood, sweat, and tears, and for the most part I mean those of the characters. As one reader put it, "If you enjoy near-constant suffering with copious amounts of character development and pining and the occasional sex scene in a cave or natural spring, this fic is for you."

I really ought to do something nice for Asami and Iroh after this.

Title: Starvation Paradise Fandom: Avatar: Legend of Korra Summary: A drunken accident leaves General Iroh and Asami Sato stranded somewhere in the frozen north. The oasis they find is their salvation, but as long as winter lasts, it is also their prison. As hopes of rescue wither and die, they must use what they have to survive. Or not. Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Injuries, Mild Sexual Content, Animal Harm Characters: General Iroh II, Asami Sato, minor appearances of others Pairings: Iroh II/Asami Sato When I Started: This fic was originally started for the @avatar-rare-pair-ship-challenge prompt "Seasons" in April 2021. You know, yesterday. How I Lost My Shit: At one point I let this story get too big in my head and then got a bit paralyzed by the level of ambition. I also wasn't quite sure how I wanted to end it. Those factors, plus life and 115 other fanfics, put it on the back burner for far too long in spite of the fact that it's always been one of my favorites. How I Finished My Shit: IRL I'm extremely motivated by deadlines and the idea of disappointing other people. Getting an artist with a posting date and knowing they'd be left holding the bag if I didn't finish was incredibly helpful. I've also been cheered on by a few very loyal readers and friends (@myargalargan, @yellowsalt3 and @badlucksav in particular) without whom I'd almost certainly never have completed this story. Love you ladies. Finally, I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the @wipbigbang for giving me the structure and motivation to finish this fic, and to Doughrito Art for the beautiful cover art that to me perfectly captures the spirit of the story. Intimate content should be consensual in nature, and please make sure to follow the guidelines of whatever platform is hosting your work.

As an FYI, this blog will use the tag #spicysukkaweek for any NSFW content in case you’d like to block these types of works.

4) Submissions should be previously unpublished.

One of the goals of this events is to inspire people to create brand-spankin'-new Sukka works! If you would like this blog to promote your existing works, I'm happy to do so during the lead-up weeks prior to the actual event week. Feel free to shoot me an ask or DM with a link!

That said, unpublished chapters to pre-existing works are okay! As are works that are cross-posted to simultaneously-occuring events.

5) If possible, it would be helpful to provide descriptions of visual or audio content.

e.g., image descriptions for fanart, edits, gifs, etc. and transcripts for audio content. I will do my best to remember to provide these descriptions when reblogging if they haven't been included already!
