Over the Garden Wall Fable AU Concepts

Okay, so - when I was across the pond to see my partner, them and I watched Over the Garden Wall. @the-uninformed-zennial had never seen it, and it's so very much their vibe so obviously we had to. And, as we are both Fable nerds, we ended up talking about potential AU ideas. I'd had two possible concepts for AUs floating in my noggin for a while and we fleshed them out together a bit.

Now, between (hopefully) finishing Three Wishes, and the holidays, and that pesky 30+ page bachelor thesis paper, I won't have time to write them as actual fics anytime soon, so I figured I'd at least put out the concepts somewhere, and Tumblr seemed like a good choice.

For anyone unfamilar with Over the Garden Wall: It's a mini series by Patrick McHale that aired on CartoonNetwork a while ago, focussing on two brothers stuck in the mysterious Unknown trying to get home and experiencing wacky halloween-y hijinks on the way. The Unknown is often interpreted to be a sort of afterlife/limbo, and the series has a lot of themes of that direction, but it's still quite charming and cute and funny (as it is made for kids).

Concept 1 Icarus and Rae are in the place of Greg and Wirt – they got into some sort of fight in the real world and ended up in a situation that made them enter the Unknown as a limbo between living and dying. In this case, the characters from the Unknown would be remaining a lot more like the ones we know from the show, so the Woodsman is just The Woodsman, the Beast is just The Beast, and so on. I’m not sure who’d be in the place of Beatrice, but there are a few possibilities. If we’re going with the popular interpretation that the Unknown is a form of the afterlife, then it could be someone from canon who has passed already (if we wanna be angsty, it could be Haley maybe? I am not sure if I want her to be though), or alternatively Beatrice could just be a random soul who, like in OtGW Canon, is trying to free their own family.

In this AU, the story would probably progress similar to the one in OtGW – Icarus and Rae trying to get home and through the Unknown, getting into more fights along the way, until Icarus ends up losing faith in being able to get home completely. Rae – much like Greg – would offer himself to the Beast in order to get Icarus home, and Icarus in turn would have to step up and be a responsible older brother and save Rae from turning into an Edelwood.

There’s a lot of similarities between Icarus and Wirt, I feel like, though Wirt’s anxious poetic nature seems more alike Rae. But both Icarus and Wirt have this streak of blaming their younger brothers for stuff that those brothers weren’t necessarily responsible for, and lashing out at them, so I can see Icarus in Wirt’s place rather well. Plus, well, Rae, like Greg, going on a whole arc of “maybe this is actually my fault so I’m gonna go with the Beast to try and fix it” seems fitting for him to me.

Concept 2

Now, the other concept I might actually like more by just a little bit – in this, the people lost in the Unknown would likely be Athena and Jamie, who (due to something other in the real world) are finding themselves in the woods, where they meet the Woodsman – who would be Rae. I can just see Rae being someone to devote themselves to being the Lantern Bearer for the Beast, if it meant to keep the soul of a loved one alive (though in this case it wouldn’t be the child, but likely Aax and Caspian) – plus, the Beast has the whole antler aesthetic going on, so that can overlap neatly with the warden in my opinion. Maybe it’s just cause the Woodsman is such a tragic figure already in OtGW canon, but I think it would be a neat spin to see that character lead the ones lost in the Unknown instead of just sending them on their way, to make the idea that he might be the Beast even worse of a betrayal, which I always thought OtGW was a bit light on. I wish they’d have given that betrayal as much weight as Beatrice’s betrayal. And then, once revealed to the Woodsman that the Lantern holds the Beast’s soul, not anyone else’s, the big fight feels in character for Rae to me, too. Rae’s devotion to the ones he loves is immense, and him fighting the monster that deceived him so – especially to also keep two innocent souls safe in the process – would not only be in character, but also give a quite triumphant turn for him in this AU. Plus, he’d get the happy ending he deserves once he actually slays the Beast and returns home to see that his loved ones are actually there and likely have been all along. The unfortunate side to his AU idea is that most of the characters in the Unknown, like Rae, already being dead and likely for a long time. However, Zenni presented an alternative idea, where the inhabitants of the Unknown aren’t always actually the souls of the deceased, but might also be sort of mirror-verse representations of them. I’m not sure how Athena and Jamie would get to the Unknown then, but it would be an interesting concept to explore, and give more detail to the world – plus, give Athena and Jamie both more of a reason to trust the Woodsman and either for the believed betrayal to hit even worse or for them to not believe it because they know Rae so well in the real world.

Now, obviously, these are just concepts, not nearly as fleshed out as I would make an actual fanfic - and some stuff might be jumbled as I've not actually written it out before and the whole Putting Things In Your Writing Brain Into Actual Writing thing is difficult as fuck.

Anyways. Those are the two ideas I came up with and have been mulling around my noggin. I don't know if I'll write them, gonna be honest, but - they are concepts alright.

Remus for sure. But only because he is far more impulsive of the two, and by his nature Janus is one to have many thoughts before doing something.

YES! We even see Remus laying back for a spot of stargazing granted on some train tracks in the OTGW video!

Whether it be clouds or constellations, the two would make a game of pointing out formations and either claiming that it looks like something utterly horrific/sexual (Remus) or just completely making up what it is he's seeing (Janus).

56 - What do they do turn the other on/put them in the mood?

Okay so, because of Remus' nature aka his his usual "always dtf" attitude, Janus could do literally ANYTHING to turn him on, even when he's just doing the mundane thing imaginable Remus would just glance his way and then just rips his whole outfit off in one go and pounces.

Though I do imagine that if Janus is on purpose going to turn Remus on, he would do very small but obvious physical touches. Like tracing his fingertips gently along the slope of Remus' jaw, a light brush of the hand on the small of his back etc. Lingering, tingling touches that leave Remus craving for more.

And when he doesn't feel like beating around the bush, sexy lingerie. Remus immediately explodes upon witnessing Janus in sexy lingerie.

Hi, I'm not sure how to word this in a way that doesn't sound a little rude so I'll just say up front that I'm trying to compare my experiences and figure stuff out. What does having alters and switching front feel like? How can you tell the difference between a switch and just a dissociation-moodswing-identity meltdown triple swing from your brain being a dick to you?

Okay, so. First and foremost I want to say that I’m sorry if this isn’t the answer you’re looking for, I’ve been there. I know just how frustrating it can be. But I will try to describe this the best I can.

Our system tends to go through cycles of activity. There can be days and weeks at a time where no one is fronting, and it sucks. Our communication isn’t the best either. Most of our time is spent blurry, as it’s usually referred to, where there’s still a detachment to the self and body but no clear identity in control. Some systems can summon a headmate to front, others can’t. We can if said headmate has specific (positive) fronting triggers, but most of the time it is a seemingly random process.

Because of this, having alters/headmates for us can feel like nothing and it can feel like everything. Sometimes you feel completely alone, but you’re aware that there’s something else there. Like something is watching you from the shadows, from behind the bushes. Some headmates have stronger presences than others, but their existence is just… a gut feeling.

Other times you feel like you’re in a room full of people with no way out. We don’t get multiple alters fronting at once most of the time, but when we do, it can feel crowded and overwhelming depending on how many. We’re usually aware that these things are happening entirely inside our head but depending on who it is or how deeply dissociated you are, what’s “inner” or “outer” world can be confusing.

For example, part of our innerworld is an OTGW-esque autumnal forest and we’ve gotten pretty familiar with how it looks and feels since we first discovered it. Someone from the forest fronted for the first time today and what our body was doing and seeing was completely foreign to them. Even if we know something as a whole, it’s not guaranteed that every alter will have the same knowledge and they may need to relearn things. When this happens, it feels like they’re aware of the knowledge, but actually being able to collect and process it is impossible. It’s just out of sight, hidden behind a metaphorical (or physical) door.

But! Not everyone is like that. Some headmates front for the first time and immediately know what’s going on. I’m not sure how to describe fronting since that too varies but if someone else is still conscious for it, it can feel like a body possession. We like people describing it as someone else taking over driving a car and you ending up in the passenger seat. Sometimes you still have your own stream of thought, sometimes you hear someone elses. Sometimes it gets blended.

Fronting can be an immediate switch-over, but it can also take hours. Headaches and confusion are common. Same goes for splitting/a new headmate forming, but that can take days. For a while it can feel like the metaphorical door, where their presence is noticeable but their identity is unclear or locked away. Most of our headmates are fictives (present as/identity with a fictional character) so sometimes you can have a Vibe or be presented with certain thoughts/mannerisms and clock them.

I guess it can be hard to distinguish things from other causes, but my advice is to take note of unusual thoughts, mannerisms, memories, feelings, etc. Not every headmate is going to be completely different from one another, but if something feels Different, look into it. Taking notes did us a lot of good when we were first figuring out our situation. Some things will be more obvious than others, do whatever feels right.

There’s a lot more we could say but we’ve rambled enough in this response. If you have alters, they will change and grow with you. The way things function inside your head may change too. Remember that. You’re not faking if something doesn’t line up the way it used to.

Not every part of being plural needs to be dramatic and profound. It can be as simple as hearing comments from someone who isnt you or just… not feeling alone inside your head. It can feel like your imagination, and that can cause a lot of doubt, but trust in yourself. Plurality can be determined by so many different things and there’s no right way to be multiple.

I'm so glad I found someone on here who share the sentiments I have about hunt/low. You and other askers have pretty much stated what I wanted to about the ship, so I'm just gonna say two things about how I hope it turns out. I really want them to have it where Willow doesn't return his feelings, but reaffirms how he's one of the most important persons in her life. And maybe for Hunter to learn that rejection doesn't have to hurt if people still want him in their life. That's what I want to happen. If it doesn't, then I hope they at least leave it ambiguous if they got together. Not really sure if this is a good comparison but if you watched otgw then you know Wirt has a crush on Sara and how at the end, they will hang out to later listen to some mixtapes. But it's left open to interpretation if they actually decided to be more than friends. That's what I hope happens instead if we don't go the rejection route.

Yes! YES!! That’s exactly it! I think someone said the exact same thing the other day where it would be amazing to have Willow reject him, but at the same time assure him she still deeply cares for him- just not romantically. And to have their friendship blossom further from that/have them grow closer. And like you said, it teaches Hunter that rejection isn’t be all end all or something negative and that rejection DOESN’T mean people just leave you or abandon you or that you’ve done something wrong to “deserve it”. I really REALLY think that actually WOULD be a good addition to his character arc, because she’s helping him heal as a friend, not as a “romance fixes trauma” type deal. Plus, let’s be real- Willow has only ever shown interest in a friendship with Hunter, she hasn’t shown any romantic interest in the show at all so I think that’s a path they very well could take. It’s a lesson Hunter needs to have, to learn rejection doesn’t always mean something bad and for Willow to stick around with him and prove it as his friend.

And if they don’t go that route, I agree with wanting it to be ambiguous. Like even ambiguous bothers me, but if that’s the best we can get than so be it :/

The Old Grist Mill

I'm just going to go ahead and link this song because in my opinion it is one of the best songs in the whole series period.

I love how the beginning of the series makes no sense to first-time watchers but after you have watched it at least once, everything at the beginning of the first episode makes sense. It gives off the same vibes as Jojo's Bizzare Adventure's openings... The Tome of the Unknown style is in every single title screen and it makes me so aesthetically happy. It intensifies the melancholy-autumn mood that this whole show embodies and of course, the art style is just amazing. I don't think any other art style would fit this series better than this one. Can we just pause for a second and talk about how f*cking cool it is that this entire show is just one big circle? The opening scene when the narrator starts talking is Wirt falling into the frozen pond... How do people come up with stuff like this!? I wish more series/movies did this kind of stuff. It just opens the door to so many more theories and expands the lore just that much deeper. Also before this episode gets any further in I just want to mention: grist;

Beatrice is one of my favorite characters in this show besides the Frog. The name Beatrice has many meanings but the one I think that makes sense in relation to the storyline is the one from the bible: deriving from the Latin word Beatrix meaning "One who blesses others". We'll talk about her more later because she is definitely a very important character in the series and the amount of lore is just *french kiss*. I'm ashamed to admit that I missed this the first time around but it's now so funny to me that while Wirt is wallowing in his sorrows and talking versing poetry about his life- Greg is just in the background swinging around objects to see which one he could knock out the woodsman with the best.

I love rock facts. 〔´∇｀〕

🍬 The candy trail that Greg has and produces out of his pants that ultimately "leads the beast' to them (Wirt and Greg) could be taken as a metaphor for no good deeds go unpunished- or that all good things lead to the bad. The 'beast', or the bad in OTGW is led to the mill by Greg's candy trail that was supposed to lead Wirt and Greg back out of the Unknown. One of my favorite lines from the show is when Greg sees the 'beast' and says "You have beautiful eyes". Greg always looks for the good throughout the series and that makes me happy （＾ｖ＾）

 🐢 The Black Turtles ~

These guys show up everywhere. I recommend you read the short article about them from the wiki that you can find here. I love these things. They're so mysterious, rare, and never explained. It never is even explained why Wirt says later in the series to Auntie Whispers that he "came to burgle her turts!". Does Wirt know something to do with the turtles that the watcher doesn't or is he just being observant and trying to make up an excuse on the fly? (More about that later in the series) It's such a good example of an uncanny valley~ they are turtles but they're black..? Black turtles don't exist in real life** and the ones in OTGW seem either to be just a singular turtle (although its never specified ).

** I kind of went down the Wikipedia rabbit hole and found out that "black" turtles do exist. Okay, so they're not entirely black but they are at least darker in color than your average sea turtle. Even farther down the rabbit hole, I started to find some things about Chinese Astrology and what certain constellations mean to them. The one that I found is the most 'relevant' (a.k.a I think it just matches the theme of OTGW the best). This is kind of complicated because of course, everything is disputed because legends and myths are always disputed so I'll try to explain this in the least confusing way possible: So the moon travels around the earth in a total of 27.32 days. Scientists track this progress by calculating the longitudes along the orbit (called an ecliptic) and then split it up into 28 different segments called Mansions or Stations (and sometimes even houses for some reason?). Anyways, ost often these were used by ancient cultures as part of their calendar systems. One of these cultures is ancient China. There's more... "The 28 Lunar Mansions are divided into four clusters, with each cluster made up of seven constellations"... There's a lot of math involved in all of this and I'm not an astronomer so I'm not sure how all of these connect but anyways I will put a pretty picture to kind of give you an idea of what I'm talking about here. Now... how does this connect to OTGW? Well, 2 things: 1. All of these Moon Stations make up "The Black Tortise of Winter" which according to this Wikipedia passage states that the Black Tortise corresponds to astrology and traveling to the underworld to guide people. 2. The 11th Moon Station of the "Black Tortoise of Winter" has a Chinese character meaning Emptiness. (pictured below)

I think that all of this concentrated around emptiness and the underworld largely reflects the ideas of the Unknown in OTGW. The Unknown is like a different world where people who are lost go to never be seen again. Kind of like Hell or the underworld. It's vast and has very few inhabitants. The turtles showing up in the movie could be almost like a guiding figure.

I appreciate the fact that the 'beast' in the beginning is Beatrice's dog. I just love dogs and that little extra added touch for the whole full-circle vibe of this show just makes me happy. "Aint that just the way" Burdens and burdens that are needed of bearing are mentioned in this episode and then never again but I still want to acknowledge that the Woodsman kind of predicts that Wirt will take on most of the problems in this show following this episode. Taking the blame, solving problems, etc., etc. which is most likely the reason why he gets turned into an adle wood tree first before ultimately Greg does. Kind of a statement piece on how difficult it is being an older child and looking after your younger siblings. This whole sentiment of "oh, your younger sibling is too young and doesn't understand, and therefore shouldn't get blamed" really can affect the elder sibling and like Wirt in the end, make them lose hope over time. Getting blamed for other people's problems is a tough situation and I think that way too many eldest children get put in the same boat. Especially at younger ages, this can cause severe problems later on down the line. I love the frog. I also love this drawing by @wabidrawbi

Come to the Sabbath: His voice has 80s vibes. Oooh the high note was spectacular actually. No idea what he's saying but it's cool. Peak instrument noises, extremely vibey. Very contrasty. The rhythms are quite interesting, it just sounds neat. Strange & unique. He's even screaming a bit. Not quite as fun as growling but still up there with fun voice noises. Overall there are a lot of vibes here. Holy shit this solo is something. This song sounds a bit like anxiety, there's so much. But it's quite good. Comes together nicely. I like the ahing. And the guitar right after (7.5/10)

Kiss The Go-Goat: I very much like this song. The religious trauma playlist is excellent for school, the Hozier keeps me from getting overwhelmed & the Ghost makes sure I don't fall asleep. The guitar in this song is super fun, as is the pre chorus part. So so vibey. They're just,,, quite good. Do I know any of the words? Not really! I'm focusing on the silly noises & vibes. What'd you say this song was about again, making out with Satan. Iconic (8/10)

Detroit Rock City: OH I like this song. It's very fun. They should definitely play this in church, I say, 10 seconds in, remembering no lyrics. Even though there's no ahing. There's a very strong vibe to this song. The drums!!! They're doing things!! I got distracted with the otgw watch party convo but the song was very vibey (7.8/10)

I Could Have Been A Dreamer: Oh wow I like this one too already. Like just? The vibe? Superb. And whoo for more Dio. He just sounds so cool, they write great vocal lines. The drums are also neat. This has less head banging energy than like. Bopping your head back & forth. Which I'm more inclined to do anyway. Funky guitar solo time! Overall this song's quite lovely. Brain stop thinking about otgw & focus on the music things please (8/10)

Home Sweet Home: The beloved disasters! They're such chaotic guys. I like this song, there's emotions in it. Chiller energy. But still some killer guitar. I love the way Vince sounds! With all the instruments! There's just! A vibe to it! I dunno. It's neat. It's much more calming than Mötley Crüe has any right to be. We need to rewatch the dirt again eventually (8/10)

King of Rock and Roll: More Dio!!! Very exciting. And it's faster, his voice is amazing & the guitar sounds great & I'm just,,, oh also the drums. It's awesome. This has head banging vibes. I like how Dio has a specific sound. I know I've mentioned it before but like? If my brain retained that sort of info, I'd be able to tell which band it is just by the instruments. They each sound unique. It's brilliant. This would be an awesome song to hear in person, all of these would be. But this one's energy is superb (8/10)

Diary of a Madman: Ozzy! Hello Ozzy. I haven't heard nearly enough of your music. I just loop Crazy Train sometimes to study the drum part. I love the cover art for this album, he looks so deranged. His voice sounds very interesting, it's all echoey & has layers. The guitar is quite loud, they layered this song much differently than like, Metallica would've. The drums get a bit muddled but they're very cool too. The vibe & energy they created for this song feels very deliberate. Oh I hear a violin! Exciting. I like violins. Echoey guitar solo, awesome. The choir at the ending? Superb. Very good ending. Quite dramatic (8/10)

Dressed to Kill (1980) dir. Brian de Palma

OK so I didn't HATE this.

but lets be honest it is problamatic.

so dressed to kill is one of those thrillers that came out were woopsie doodle the serial killer just so happens to be trans, (and/or suffering form DoD, they get conflated, (and patholigized), a lot).

So unlike say Silence of the Lambs this one focuses a lot less on the whole tranvestite serial killer bit and is just more about following around a hooker who witnessed the first murder.

also this movie is super fucking horny. It literally starts with a woman fingering herself in a shower, For me it says hey titties in case anyone forgot what they look like. To be honest there is a very deliberate conflation between sexuality and violence in this film thats not subtle. Also a lot of repressed women sexuality but luckily that one chick gets DICKED DOWN before she gets brutally murdered.

This is a giallo-lite thriller with lots of titties, violence, and honestly a lot of stuff that did not age well. So now you know.

Midnight Snack (2014) dir. David Romero

ok so apparently David Romero is on Tumblr. Badass.

So first can I just say that I love everything about this. The protaganist, the classic style ghost story, his animation style. Like he did a 3d modeled set that he hand animated over I mean who doesn't fucking love that. Mother fucking icon.

So this is a short film anout a young woman in latin america who is riding the subway when the lights flicker and some creepy monster starts stalking her.

this was definetly a great little short film and I had a lovely time watching it.

so I assume that this type of strange home video is an intentional post modern interpretation of nostaglia and childhood.

for some reason i expected it to be like, a six hour thing like a two cour anime like y’know 24 episodes 24 minutes each kind of thing but no it was like a clean hundred minutes but yeah!!! real good yeah
