Aot [Eren x Self insert. Au: college] (fem pronouns)
Armin
---------
Eren walks off leaving Y/n outside with a couple new freshmen known to be cocky little shits. She leans against the wall and watches our friends talk and giggle in the grass ahead of her. Her big doe eyes flick to the side as a freshman approaches her. They talk for a bit and she has a huge grin on her face. Eren comes behind me, his hands deep in his pockets, his breath hot with jealousy. "That motherfucker, he has no idea who he is dealing with." Eyes wide a bit, looking at him, he has an evil grin on his face.
But it fades rather quickly as the student grabs Y/n's waist and pulls her to them. I hear him growl slightly. His hands in my view, clenched tight in a fist. So tight his knuckles change from his skin color, to red, to white. He marches over,he pulls her head back by her chin with his thumb. His hand around her throat and the other on her bare stomach. His index barely reaching the hem of her crop top, stopping right under her breasts. He presses their lips together softly and let's tongues explore.
Eren
---------
Just leaving for a water to see some bastard hitting on my girl. She is mine and will be mine for a long time. She doesn't know it yet but it's known all over campus. Her eyes widen, pupils dilated as my tongue explores every crevice of her mouth. My hand tight around her throat her cheeks dusted a deep shade of red. Pulling away, a string of saliva connecting our lips.
Shakey exhale as she moves back, covering her blush with the back of her hand. "What was that for?" Smirking and lifting her Chin for her to look me in my eyes. Her lips gently parted and the cold showing her breath as she softly pants. "Just need everyone to know you are mine." She slowly nods and looks deeper in my eyes. Making her walk in front of me leading her into my dorm.
Y/n
---------
In a position hundreds of girls at our college would jump at the chance of being offered to me just from a boy talking to me. His fingers delicately undo the buttons to under my breasts, his eyes travel over the thin purple sports bra covering my breasts. "They seems small but this bra compresses them to look that way. Take it off you'll see." He looks back to my eyes down to my tits again. Shrugging he rips the shirt the rest of the way open.
Pulling the bra over my head. Burying his tongue in my mouth, softly moaning caught completely off guard. One hand groping my ass the other massaging one of my breasts. Barely fitting in his hand, he chuckles underneath his breath, "Ah that's a good fucking girl." Smirking in the kiss getting everything you wanted. "You want me?" He nods and lifts me onto the bathroom counter. Tugging my hair making me throw my head back as he sinks his teeth in. He leans back and lets out a prideful "Heh!" While admiring the bruising already appear on my skin. Slyly making eye contact as he presses his palms again my bare thighs, my legs slowly spread. His hand slides up eagerly. I chuckle and push it away, hopping off the counter and jumping on my bed. Kicking my feet behind me, "You don't deserve to be between my legs Eren." Small growl as he leans against the doorway of my bathroom looking at my ass from the bottom of my shorts. "Why not sweetheart?" Rolling my eyes and looking at him, "Because you can't make my pussy throb even if you tried!"
He scoffs, my eyes glued to the screen of my phone while I text a guy I have no interest in. Feeling his eyes burn right through me as the boy texts me to come over with some obviously cringe emojis if you know you know. Warm but calloused hands yank the bottoms from my hips, roughly pressing his fingers against my more than slick hole. "Shit!" He leans over to gently chew my lip and moves down my body kissing his way to my nipples taking them in his mouth. Small gasp as his tongue stimulates and sucks. A small moan escapes my lips as he chuckles again underneath his breath, "You are mine and If you don't want me your body obviously does. So except it princess, decision has been made...

tell me about the fallout dnd campaign... *eyes emoji bc i'm on my laptop*
HEHEHE OK you don't have to tell me twice ! :3
sooooo first things first, the group consists of a hippie vault dweller (Joel), pre-war ghoul park ranger (Nettle), a girlfailure cowgirl (Andy), and a stubborn bos aspirant (Victoria). I'm literally kicking my feet in the air thinking about them rn
my character is Anderson (Andy for short) and wait. you're gonna love this. SHE RIDES A MECHANICAL HORSE. that's right folks, a giant giddyup buttercup!!!!! it's an absolute pain in the booty ass to draw but it's soooo worth it because it's cool as hell like I'll have to post some of my doodles soon so you can see
now, with 2 points in charisma, she's so. so bad at talking. she fails at pep talks, cannot rally a crowd to save her life, and always says the wrong thing at the wrong time. it never stops her from trying tho! one example of this is after Joel's vault was raided by the "legion" (WHAAAAT!!!! "what does that mean??" you dont get to know yet! cause I don't even really know yet 💀 anyway) she looks at the vault door on the ground and goes "well, you know what they say! one door is... um... blasted off it's hinges and... uh........ another...... um.......... opportunities!!" I LOVE HER !!!!!! I could talk about all the terrible ways she says things all day it's so freaking fun
HOWEVER. somehow, (luck?), it always works out one way or another. no matter how she butchers a speech, no matter how awkward an interaction is, it WORKS. tho people don't react the same way that they would to a more charismatic person, of course. it makes her more lovable, and people listen! for some reason.
she's not stupid, though, I want to make that clear. she's very smart when it comes to things other than talking 💀 with 8 intelligence points and tag skills in repair and science, she knows what she's doing! I mean, she built buttercup all by herself! the brotherhood keeps tabs on her because of her tech capabilities!
speaking of the brotherhood... her interactions with Vic(toria) are SO everything. I like to call Vic a bos pos because she really is a little piece of shit (lovingly) LOL and Andy just. torments her. like somebody threw a snowball at Vic in the vault (it's winter btw) (the dwellers weren't happy with her) and she was like. 'I'm going to handle this with dignity and grace. I am not going to react' and then Andy THROWS ANOTHER just to poke the bear. like girl 😭 or how they all need to use the bos terminals and so Vic is like "ok be normal guys let me do the talking" and before she can, Andy BURSTS through the doors like "I DEMAND TO SPEAK TO YOUR MANAGER" which she would not fucking say that normally but to embarass Vic? absolutely. especially since everyone there already KNOWS her and they're like 'Andy. David is literally in the other room. I don't get paid enough for this.' (and then she proceeds to call him Dave like they're old friends and Vic wants to kill herself and/or Andy at the same time)
now, what's ALSO fun is the interactions between Vic and Nettle. they HATE each other. I mean, obviously, cause Vic is the typical bos type of racist, but also because Andy tries SO desperately to keep things civil like "one big happy family" which we're actually seeing process with recently so !! yay !! Vic got radiation sickness one day and Nettle silently offered her some radaway like awww look at them go :3
Joel is another beast entirely. he doesn't know SHIT about the wasteland (typical vault dweller really) (which is also perfect because his player also doesn't know shit LOL) so he has us 3 idiots to rely on just because we happened to be nearby when his vault opened. his original goal was to set up supply chains because his vault's crops were dying and they have plenty of water to trade, which we dealt with pretty quick, but then we returned to find THE LEGION!!!! subsequently, his dad was stolen, the president (overseer, our dm hates when we call him the president but we do it anyway) was also stolen, and his life was turned upside down! yay!
so now, obviously, our goal is to save Joel's dad, the president, and whoever else the legion stole ! ngl it's been over 2 months since our last session 💀 but that just means I have more time to doodle things that happened previously! I'll post them after finals or something :) thanks for reading omg what do u think?? I'm not doing them justice really there are a lot more complexities but I guess that's the basics. also thank u for asking 🥺 I love talking about them and I will likely do it again LOL

Lazzle's Rune Factory 5 Review
Alright so here are my thoughts and experiences with RF5! This is a big boy so buckle in earthmates...
Obviously this review will contain spoilers, read at your own risk.
Initial thoughts upon playing...
Great opening! I enjoyed the jazz music~ I did feel like it leaned a bit more towards the male player though. It definitely feels like a rune factory game. It's familiar, and controls are easy to get accustomed to for the most part. The mold is there and rf5 doesn't stray too far from its predecessors which is comforting for veterans. That being said, I'm not going to pull any punches and will critique this game harshly. Keep in mind as updates for the game are released not all things discussed in this review will be as relevant overtime!
Let's hear some thoughts on...
The story/plot. The plot is enjoyable overall. I'm not crazy about the whole Seed organization thing but it was a neat idea. They address the Sechs Territory and it is confirmed that the game takes place some decades after RF4. But by the end of it, I didn't feel like I really accomplished anything because it felt like I barely did anything really. Also they left a lot of stuff unanswered. I'm not even sure I understood the message they were sending, if they were trying to send a message at all. The main story is too short, and it doesn't involve enough of the townsfolk. You're basically doing everything yourself in secret the whole time and the townsfolk barely know what's actually going on. Out of the love interests, Lucas plays the largest part in the story, followed by Priscilla and Scarlett. The story feels targeted at male audiences--at least that's how I felt. You, the player, have a larger role in the game, much like in RF3 and I was glad to see this. As of right now there are only two arcs. Praying for DLC 3rd arc...!
Protagonists. The latest protagonists to join the crew of Earthmates are...decent. Their designs are nothing special unfortunately, though I appreciate Alice's more than Ares's. Appearance-wise they lack personality and creativity. Personality wise I am pleasantly surprised with how sociable they are. They're not exactly quick witted and sassy like Lest/Frey were in rf4, or as endearing as Micah in rf3, but they have a certain realness to them that makes their reactions to things believable. I'm certain Xseed will see to making them a bit more sarcastic in their localizing efforts, so let's all look forward to that. Overall though, while I appreciate their mannerisms, they don't really measure up to all the previous amnesiacs we've grown to love over the decades.
Characters. Overall I enjoy all the characters introduced in Rune Factory 5! I feel like there is someone for everyone in this game on some level. The voice acting was pretty good for every character. The designs are very much Rune factory. Like OG runefa, compared to rf4 ( 4 kind of strayed from their usual style) which I like. Characters still have their own signature quirks that you find endearing. Although I would have liked to see more variety? Like we've had mermaids, univir, half monsters, vampires, etc in previous titles but rf5 only gives us the usual (half) elf, dwarf, and then a succubus (physically she doesn't have unique features aside from the ears and heart eyes), and some were-people. I was hoping for something more unique to really give that classic runefa vibe.
Dungeons/Battles. I'm pretty split on this one. On the one hand, the dungeons have more depth due to the 3D aspects. They've included more contraptions that are very fun to see even if they aren't executed that well. So I'm grateful for that. On the other hand, the dungeons are insanely short imo. It doesn't take long at all to get to the boss. The puzzles are also pretty subpar and few compared to RF4. Fighting monsters is similar to the other games. You can lock on now but I only use it when I'm trying to use my Seed Circle. The lock on feature is actually counter-intuitive and makes it harder to dodge. Weapon mechanics have shifted a bit. There’s a feature that makes you invincible to damage if you time the R button dash correctly. Axes and Hammers are significantly slower than in older games? Like. I thought I was in slow motion it was so slow. Lances are also harder to use as well? I'm questioning my sanity here. I don't know if it's a bug or intentional either.
Farming. Not much has changed from previous games mechanics wise. They added new types of special crops which is neat. The camera view changes to overhead when you go near your fields though, and it can make you dizzy/uncomfortable. It actually makes it a bit difficult to see at times so I wish there was a way to adjust the angle. If you are tilling corn or dried weeds to improve the soil, you need to place them separately if you don't want to use the entire stack. Otherwise, it will till the entire stack on the land if you place them all down at once. The flower shop is unlocked late in the story. Weird thing to do considering you need flowers to make medicine. Not to mention the fact that you wont have access to the fertilizer that increases defense against typhoons? During typhoon season? Thinking emoji...
The town. I have to say Rigbarth's design is poor compared to Sharance, Selphia, etc. It's too big and it takes too long to get around. Everything is too spaced out and there aren't enough warp points to make it easier on players. I don't want to walk an entire mile up a hill to talk to one person and then walk all the way down to the beach to speak to another. It doesn’t really feel like a ‘town’.
OST/BGM. Music was good, though nothing really stood out to me where I'd go "damn this slaps" or something. I think they might've had some old soundtracks from rf2 or something because it felt really nostalgic at times.
We need an exterminator. (Bugs Bugs Bugs)
Marvelous, I don't know how to tell you this buuut...your customers are NOT your testers. When you release a game, you need to make sure it's not littered with glitches because customers don't enjoy dealing with them and will drop the game!
Here are some of the types of glitches I encountered:
Crashing. Game would randomly crash or freeze and close at any moment. Sooooo frustrating! Sometimes you get lucky with the autosave feature, but the autosave only activates every morning at 6am in your room and then when you warp to a dungeon level/floor. So when you're in the middle of your daily tasks in town and it crashes, you have to start all over. Marveloussss no one enjoys losing their progress in a game I promise you that much.
Lag. The dialogue bar is seriously slow, especially after loading your file. Crafting/Cooking screen lags. When you press the Y button to skip through dialogue it lags like hell. Pretty much after every time you load the game will lag, the audio will lag if you're in a battle, everything is just. so. slow.
Repeating dialogue. So if you close your game entirely (or if it crashes) naturally you'll reload your file to continue where you left off. There's a bug that will cause all NPCs to repeat the last dialogue that occurred from whatever plot related thing you did last. So for example, if the last thing you did in the story was unlock Ludmilla, everyone in town will naturally have some dialogue about her. But even after seeing all this dialogue and even saving, if the game is closed and reloaded you'll have to read all that dialogue again from townsfolk. It got really annoying after a while.
Monster taming. One time I tamed a monster but once I named it and hit 'ok' the monster never showed up in my barns? Just. gone. Okaaaay then...? Additionally, I expanded one of my monster barns but all of the monsters I tamed wouldn't appear in the added room. You get 4 monsters for each room but the monsters I tamed would show up in the original room. Meaning I had like 7 monsters in one room! I tried to bring them into the newly added room but they would just warp back to the other room. Sad.
Pond Glitch. I fished in the pond located in Sasayaki Forest and left the fish I caught but didn't want laying around the water's edge. If you leave fish around the pond's edge and go to sleep, the next morning you will be teleported to the pond and trigger the fairy dialogue as if you had thrown all of the fish into the pond??? So the dialogue of her telling you she wants 'X item, not this!' will trigger over and over for all of the fish you left at the water's edge. RIP.
Party member Bug. I had Martin in my party and I made him leave. Then when I went into my monster barns to get a monster pal to join me instead it showed me Martin's portrait???? Also I've encountered a bug where I can no longer ask anyone to join my party for some unknown reason. The R &L button prompt was just gone when I reloaded.
Errors. When cooking or crafting, the dialogue box shows up sometimes...
Typos. Random average typo here and there. Not a real biggie but there is one instance where the heroine will use the japanese male pronoun "boku" instead of "watashi" which really convinced me that this game was completely intended for men lol.
Let's talk about Pros
The good stuff. The stuff that makes you all warm and fuzzy inside.
Plot Advancing. Now I'm gonna put this as a pro because I'm certain the average player will enjoy this even though I do not. There are now markers on the map to show you where to go to advance the plot. This is all well and dandy, but it also made the story less appealing for me because you don't need to go around town and speak to residents for clues or assistance to advance anything in the story.
3D Graphics The 3D models are all amazing. The interior designs of the houses/buildings are also incredibly detailed and realistic.
Collecting items. Now there's a feature that will allow you to collect items into your inventory just by walking over them. This is pretty neat and welcome for the most part. Once the item is sparkling, you can walk over it and it'll go into your rucksack automatically. This also makes lumbering and mining go much faster. Yay!
The miraculous L pocket. Now you can customize the categories that appear in your L pocket by going to the rucksack tab in the menu. This is a super neat feature that makes things easier on players who want to manage their items in a format that suits them.
Weapon/Tool Toggling. You can now toggle between your equipped weapon and tool by pressing the left or right buttons on the trackpad.
Collecting lumber/material stone. Oh lord this is probably the most welcome improvement moving forward from the previous game. You can now put all of the lumber and material stone from your inventory into its storage at once. This also applies to fodder for tamed monsters. Well done Hakama.
Autosave. This feature is a welcome addition to the series. The game will save your data every morning and every time you enter a dungeon. Autosave has really saved my ass a few times when I made a huge error in judgement so I'm incredibly grateful for this feature. And it doesn't save over your actual save file--there's a separate autosave file at the very top. So if you messed up something but already saved on your main file, you can still salvage your mistake by reloading the autosave! I just wish it activated a bit more often sometimes.
Warping. Now we can warp to each level in a dungeon as well as certain places on the map in town. It's pretty convenient for the most part.
Increased party members. Now you can have up to 3 members in your party! Hooray! Party members act more intelligently than in older games. Scarlett can use the Seed circle to assist you in fights. I think she also tosses healing potions at you occasionally. So far, no one has tossed a dish at me if I haven't eaten like Kiel and Clorica did in rf4. But I have been hit by a failed dish (from reinhardt?) and a healing potion (from scarlett). Scarlett, Priscilla, and Reinhardt are the most helpful when dungeon crawling in my experience. Some of them however, (looking at you Doug) don't shut the hell up with their one line of dialogue they have and repeat it constantly.
Seed Circle. This neat feature allows you to capture monsters. By charging it and releasing you can capture monsters for the bounty system or add them to your party temporarily. If you throw it without charging it, you can stun monsters in place momentarily or grab things from far away. When stunning monsters, it can also give you the monster's drop item occasionally. Unfortunately it uses a lot of RP so it can be difficult at times.
Combo attacks. This is a neat feature that I appreciate and use often for boss fights. They do some serious damage so it's good to save them for the bosses. The actual cutscenes aren't that impressive, and feel kind of subpar when you get down to it but I think it's a start in the right direction.
Farm Dragons. I'm listing this as a pro although I really just see it as a new feature. Farm dragons have fields on their backs that you can place monster barns on and farm on. Giving them certain crystals will give your fields boosts in certain criteria, like length of growth, soil quality, you get it. I personally don't use the crystals because I couldn't give a shit lmao I have men and women to woo here. But if you're into this kinda thing then it's a pro.
Storage. When opening your storage box, fridge, etc. you can actually hit the R & L buttons to switch between ALL of your other storages. Looooove thissss. Great addition. So much faster to put items away in their respective places.
Crafting/Forging. Now we can also use the R & L buttons to alternate between the different weapon types/accessory/gear types instead of having to exit the menu and going back in each time you want to make something different.
Cooking. More recipes have been added. Yay!
Days are longer now. More time to get shit doneeeee ayyyy
Fishing. They've added many more fish to the game! Now the player will shout something when you get a bite, making it easier for you to hit B at the right moment. Nice. Also if you fail or press B too early, the fish doesn't vanish most of the time. Also nice. There is now a feature to fish with another person's assistance. Once a day you can investigate the sign near the fishing station and someone might offer to lend you a hand. Press the B button at the right moments on the slider and you can get a rare fish that can't be caught normally.
Monsters. New types of monsters! Love the designs. Even the monsters that are the same but just have different skins are really neat. They look great in the 3D format too. You can even ride with up to two people on certain monsters! Some bosses had awesome designs while others...were bad.
New Types of Furniture. The carpenter store has a wide arrange of furniture you can buy for your home. It also has wallpapers and stuff which is really neat. Though unfortunately you can't even sit on some of the furniture so that's a shame.
Events. Now there is a system where events are triggered by approaching an icon on the map. This is probably an improvement to RF4's randomized system, though personally I found it annoying because it meant that I had to see the events before I could just enter a building normally. Sometimes I just wanted to get shit done and not have to read through walls of text for someone's love event when I just want to buy something.
Voiced Lines. The protagonist seems to have more voiced lines, as do other characters. Good!
Let's talk about Cons
Not including glitches. Oh boy. So many cons. Where do I start?
Dialogue. Probably the most notable con in the entire game. The dialogue is drastically minimal in comparison to previous games, especially rf4. There is probably a quarter of the amount of dialogue compared to rf4's insane amount of content if not less. Townsfolk repeat themselves. Often. Too often. Am I playing Harvest Moon? Originally I thought it was because the dialogue is randomized, but I think it's actually because more dialogue is unlocked as you raise townspeople's FP. Despite this, there's no linear build up where you start off as acquaintances and eventually become very close like in rf4 because of how sporadic the LP/FP is. Townsfolk don't even talk to each other. One of the greatest perks about runefa is the conversations townsfolk can have with one another. Residents randomly gathering in small groups to talk about anything. Previously you could add someone to your party and sometimes a dialogue will occur if you speak to the right person at the right time with that person in your party. This is nonexistent now. The only time they do this in rf5 is during the festivals. But, it will only trigger if you have unlocked all the characters in each marriageable lineup and they can't be in your party. The residents will talk about one another but that's pretty much it outside of town events. They got rid of all the minor dialogue that occurs too. Trying to sleep in someone's bed while they're right there? They wont comment. Inspecting objects in stores while the shopkeeper is present? Wont say anything. Take a character with you to a dungeon/boss fight? Their lips are sealed. Where's my sense of community? :(
FP/LP This ties into the dialogue issue. The rate at which LP/FP increases is sporadic as hell. You can go from 1FP/LP to 4FP/LP just by giving a gift sometimes. I wouldn't even speak to people and their affinity increased by like triple for no reason. Then it increases by like 2% for the longest time. Argh!!!
Graphics. I don't consider myself very picky when it comes to graphics. I don't really mind that the foliage and scenery are at the level of a ps2 game at best. I tried playing on my television initially, but the lag and camera operability was too much so I fully switched (haha puns) to handheld. One thing that sucked is that I literally cannot tell the difference between medicinal herbs, antidote grasses, and green grasses without the captions because the graphics are so indistinguishable. So when you're trying to pick up multiples of those items by holding the A button, you're just randomly walking over anything green in the hopes that you'll get the right ones...
Lack of Sound Effects. Something I noticed is they got rid of the sound effects that will play when you complete a puzzle or add someone to your party. When you try to brush a monster there's no sound for the '♪' they make when you successfully brush them. So it was hard for me to tell if I had actually brushed them or not. I was a bit saddened by the lack of cute sounds.
Too much free range. From the very beginning of the game, you're allowed to go pretty much wherever you want when leaving town. It was too easy to stumble into high enemy level territory without knowing, so when I was like level 5 so I got KO'd immediately.
Artwork. The portraits seem to be lower in quality somehow. Runefa has always had shitty portrait art imo but this time it's even worse. Many character's eyes looked fucked up. Though the 3D models are insanely good for mostly every character except Terry. Terry's 3D model looks Terryfying and I prefer his portrait.
Festivals. They've added some new festivals. Some I enjoy. Some not so much. They changed the format of the eating contest. It's horrible. Good luck with that one.
L pocket + R button? They got rid of the feature that lets you skip to the other end of your items when opening the L pocket by pressing R button. I really liked that feature because it made it faster to reach my items so I was bummed that they got rid of it.
Gotta go fast. Now when you speak to someone, it doesn't 'stop time' as you might say it did in previous games. So people are still moving about as you speak to someone, making it harder to catch up to people! Annoying!!!
Catch and release? Not in my farming simulator! Say goodbye to being able to toss a fish you caught back into the water. In fact, say goodbye to tossing anything you don't want anymore into the water. Now you just have an army of fish flopping on the ground around you. And with the auto pick up feature, they're probably going to end up in your inventory anyways once you try to move. There are still certain ponds with fairies that you can toss stuff into, but you'll have to deal with the fairy harping at you for giving her something she doesn't want.
Shop Hours. Oh god. The shop owners don't even open their stores at the correct hours? It says open at 9am. If you speak to them they won't open their store until like 9:07??? But Priscilla and Lucy will show up to work their part-time jobs at around 8:30am and you can buy stuff through them before 9am. So the actual shop owners (for the bread shop and general store) are pointless usually. Additionally, if the store is empty (but open) you can no longer add a shopkeeper into your party and then enter their store with them to buy things from them. Why. Just why. When you want to buy something that only a specific person sells (Only Hina sells fish, only Heinz sells misc items) you have to wait for them to finally decide to work in their own store. Wonderful.
Monster Item drops. Maybe I'm crazy but the monster drops are seriously a lot harder to get than in previous games. Especially boss drops. It's almost impossible to get the rare drops now. I don't even want to try anymore. And as far as I know, the only place to buy monster items is through Heinz, but his items are actually misc. items, not specifically monster drops. So you'll be lucky to check his store (whenever tf he decides to actually work) for any monster items you might want instead of farming for the drops. Sighs.
Difficulty. This game is too easy. There is little to no challenge whatsoever. I had to increase the difficulty setting to hard mode and it was still too easy. I beat it at level 139, never once did I need to grind or level. In fact, your character levels up way too quickly for the pace of the story. I had zero trouble with any of the bosses and even the final boss was a breeze. Quite sad. Though because I am not new to the franchise, it's likely that newcomers would have some trouble in the later parts of the story.
Fishing cons. Idk how you fck up fishing but they sure did. You have to stand further back now because the pole is so long that you'll miss the fish you're aiming for. In fact, it's seriously hard to aim period. You'll end up recasting more often than not. Fish come in the various sizes but they don't seem to have the darker or faded characteristics that can indicate whether it's a rare fish or not. The graphics make it hard to tell. The pros that i've already mentioned are welcomed but it doesn't negate the fact that I do not enjoy fishing like I did in previous games.
Mining/Lumbering Cons. You can no longer strike three times consecutively when mining/lumbering. This sucks lol. Even when you upgrade your axe or hammer, powering up the tool does nothing for getting wood and material stone--it only expands the area of your strike. So it takes longer to get wood/stone from stumps and rocks now since you have to strike the full 9 times but it's not too bad. It's also harder to aim now as well so that's also unfortunate.
Seasonal Fields? Kiss them goodbye! That's right, there are no seasonal fields in rf5 because devs are insane! You instead have the farm dragons that seem to look seasonal based on the fact that they are designed after elements like earth, water, and fire. But no, these dragons are simply extra fields for you to use. Here's a spoiler: you're not going to use those fields. You're just not. They're kinda useless unless you're obsessed with farming. Now you have to grow your crops out of season like the sad farmer that you are.
Farming cons. Seeds no longer tell you how long it takes to grow the crop. Why. As of June 29th, they fixed this with an update. But I still had to play the whole game without it so fuck you marvelous. The joystick is really sensitive? So when you're trying to use a fertilizer or something on your field you're likely to place it on the wrong 4x4 tile, wasting your fertilizer. So it’s best to hold down the R button when farming. Also the crops look uglie as hell.
Sleeping and warping cutscenes. Just like in rf4 there's a cutscene when you go to sleep that can be skipped easily by pressing A. In rf5, there's a cutscene to sleep and a cutscene when waking up. It takes a bit more than a second to skip these scenes so it gets annoying after a while. Warping is this new feature that replaces our beloved escape spell. Overall I appreciate the feature but I hate it for two reasons. One: there's an annoying ass cutscene for it each time you use it that could be much shorter. And Two: townsfolk now use warp even when inside the town. In previous games, someone exiting your party in town would just manually run to wherever they need to be. So you could easily chase after them if you need to talk to them or give them something. Now, party members use warp regardless of where you are at the time. So say you have someone at 7 hearts and you want to try confessing to them. You would have them join your party, save your game, and then have them leave your party and immediately speak to them and confess before they can run off. If it doesn't work you reload until it does. In RF5 this wouldn't work anymore because they will warp. Now you would have to save, run around town trying to find this person and hope they accept the confession. Otherwise you'll have to play hide and seek again because reloading your file will randomize the resident's locations (if they are not working in a shop)!!!! I often just waited until a festival day because then they will be at the plaza for most of the day and it has a warp point there.
Crafting/Forging/Cooking. They've removed the feature where you can press Y on the ingredients in the menu to add more of that particular item. I miss this feature :'(
Lacks incentive. There is no trophy room from my knowledge. The final dungeon that is meant to be like the sharance maze/rune prana isn't that hard to beat for skilled players and is only 20 floors. After you beat the main story and this dungeon there's not much else to do really.
Request Board. Unlike in rf4, you need to make sure you have accepted requests before you complete them or else it will not count. Previously, you could complete all sorts of tasks and Eliza would still recognize your work even if you accept their request after the fact. ie, shipping goods, harvesting crops, etc. So make sure you don't harvest your special crops before accepting the request it's for!
Return of the "Loli" Dragons... Yeah you read that right. We got more dragons in children's(???) bodies with skimpy clothes. I don't know anymore????¿¿¿
Can't marry the Milfs or Dilfs. Tragic.
Still no homo. Grow up Marvelous.
Reverse Proposal? Reverse Uno card-- Laid low by the patriarchy. You now have to buy the double bed and craft an engagement ring to propose to your man if you're playing as Alice. Marvelous this isn't what we meant when we said we wanted equal rightsssssss This can be seen as a pro if you're a softhearted babey who doesn't like rejecting bachelors' proposals because you feel bad :'( But this is a con for me because I don't want to spend money and materials on a double bed dammit!!!
Misc. Still can't stack dishes or fish. There's no green elemental fairy???All the other elemental ones are there except the green one? why??? Still can't tame the giant Wooly. Some bosses that have insanely awesome designs cannot be tamed and makes me wanna eat glass.
Let's talk about Love~
Relationships. We want them. And half of us only play these games for them. I've only played as the female heroine so far but I'll be updating this review as soon as I finish with the bachelorettes as the male hero.
Confessions
As usual, we must raise the love points of our beloved to 7 hearts before we can attempt to date them. However unlike in rf4, if you fail at a confession once, you will need to raise the LP up an entire level before you can try again with any chance of success. It's imperative you save before attempting a confession now.
Love Events
Each love interest has two love events that must be seen before you can date them. They're reminiscent of older game's style but I felt they could have been a biiiit more interactive or so? Or involved the town a bit more for some of them.
Dating
Once you get your honey to be your bf/gf, you get to choose the nicknames as usual. Then you can go on dates. The first three (non-festival) dates are actually events. You need to see all three events to get married.
Marriage Event
The final event you need to clear before you can marry your sweetie. In my honest opinion, so far for the boys, these events were rather disappointing. They lacked the drama and angst that sort of 'test' the love between the two when compared to rf4. Also this is a huge con for me personally and a minor spoiler but there are no special cutscenes at the end of the marriage event like in rf4. Instead, the cutscene takes place during your actual wedding. I was saddened by this because it took away the depth from the marriage events and the actual character? As it is just a cut and paste type of thing instead of an original cutscene for each person. They lack individualism this way. Also it kinda felt like a way for devs to avoid gay relationships and cut corners :^/....sus.
First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes...
Children!!!!!! This is actually one of the coolest additions in the game. Just like in rf3, you can have up to 3 children again! Your first child will resemble you, and you will have the option to choose its gender as well as its personality. There are 6 different children, (3 boys and 3 girls), all with different hairstyles, mannerisms, and seiyuus. Your answers will determine which child you get. A year after your first child is born, you will get the option to have a second child. You'll end up with twins, both resembling your partner. You won't get to choose the genders (it will be a boy and girl) but you will get to choose the personalities once more. The children all have canon names too and each kid is incredibly cute. And of course, you're still able to take your kid with you in your party~ ...Though you can only take one kid with you at a time.
So is RF5 good?
Yeah it's a fun game! My theory is that Marvelous forced the devs to release the game earlier than they were ready for, and that's why it's so lacking. But that doesn't mean it's not worth playing! I'd rate it 3.5/5 stars hehe. Not nearly as good as RF4 (full stop 5/5), or RF3 (4/5) but enjoyable nonetheless. I wouldn't recommend it as a first game to play from the series for newcomers though, I feel it's best for vets who can overlook all the cons thanks to loyalty and nostalgia. By the time it’s released in the West, the bugs should all be dealt with too.
So! Definitely buy this game! We want the series to continue and we want RF6 to be better than this--and hopefully Marvelous will make sure of that next time. If you're not a picky person I think you'll enjoy rf5 a lot. If you're like me and have high standards then, well, still pick it up and let it run its course. Then dust off rf4sp and cleanse your gaming palette >;^)

Bad Timing (Levi x reader) Part 10
Tumblr media
Summary: How do you tell your friends that you’re falling for your big brother’s best friend?
Word Count: 4.9 K
__
The loud buzzing of the tattoo gun was beginning to annoy Levi. The little pricks less annoying than the drone of the machine. He winced as the needle skimmed over a sensitive bit of skin.
"Try not to flinch." Farlan scolded as he readjusted his grip.
"Tch, sorry." Levi apologized through gritted teeth. Farlan reached for a wipe to clean off the excess ink, revealing the nearly finished piece. Like his other tattoos, this one was no different, the design was drawn out in thin delicate lines of ink. He had chosen to get this one on his tricep. Farlan spun his chair around to show Levi the design in the mirror, a flower, more specifically a lily of the valley. More specific yet, the flower for the month of May, the month his mother was born.
He nodded in appreciation a she admired the thin stem that led up to delicate bell shaped petals. The stems faded into a two leaves at the base of the design, they were all that needed to be filled in before the piece was complete.
"It looks good." Levi mused as he stared at the aggravated skin, the black lines were outlined with red angry skin.
"Thanks, I must admit I'm a bit rusty." Farlan chuckled as he leaned in with another wipe to clean the tattoo.
"Could've fooled me." Levi muttered as he turned in his chair to give Farlan better access.
"Let me finish this up and then we can go grab some lunch." Farlan gave the tattoo one last wipe down before he wrapped it in sandiderm. Once he was pleased with his work he tugged off the gloves and tossed them into the trash.
"Sounds good." Levi grunted as he stood up from the chair. Farlan had picked up tattooing as a side hustle, not that he booked many clients. It was more of a hobby for him, but he was rather good at it. As Farlan cleaned up the equipment and packed it back into his bag Levi went into the bathroom to wash up before they left for lunch. Isabel was out with friends, she hadn't been particularly interested in visiting the University with Levi and Farlan.
____
Levi trailed a few paces behind Farlan as they wondered through the sprawling campus. The campus had a dark academic vibe to it, with all the gothic architecture and the snowy lawns. Levi's trip was coming to a close, and he was glad that he had managed to squeeze in the visit. He spoke to an advisor, who was very enthusiastic about him applying. He figured that him coming from a single parent home, being an orphan with dual citizenship and good grades probably looked good for their statistics. So Levi and Farlan left, packets of information that they would need to apply. He decided that he should give Erwin a call, since he would be coming back home on the 26th, he originally intended on coming back after the new year but Hange had convinced him to come back early. Of course it was intended to be a surprise for Erwin and (Y/n), he felt bad for leaving Farlan and Isabel early but he figured that he could make up for the lost time when he got accepted into the University. They would have him all to themselves for four years if everything went according to plan.
"This place looks as good as any." Farlan paused in front of a small pub not too far from campus. Levi shrugged and kicked a chunk of ice out of his way. Farlan held the door open for him as they ducked into the dimly lit bar. The two settled into the barstools facing an impressive stock of alcohol, since it was about three in the afternoon the bar was basically empty save for a scraggly old dude that was mumbling to himself in a booth.
"Come here often?" Levi huffed as he inspected the sticky bar top. Farlan chuckled and waved for the bar tender.
"No actually, but I've heard that it's popular with the uni students." Faralan explained as he waited for the bar tender to finish counting the money in his hands.
"Two gin and tonics please." Farlan asked politely, the bar tender nodded and began to make the drinks.
"So you leave in what five days?" Farlan asked as he grabbed his drink and took a long swig.
"Yeah, sorry it was kind of last minute." Levi apologized, Farlan waved him off dismissively.
"Wait what did you get Isabel for Christmas this year?" Farlan asked as he slammed his already drained glass onto the counter.
"I bought her the DVD set for that one show she likes." Levi answered as he nursed his gin and tonic.
"Ah no way! That's a good one! The veterinary show right?" Farlan gushed, clearly impressed with Levi's choice of gift.
"Yeah that's the one." Levi nodded, a small smirk spreading across his lips.
"She'll love that. I got her some new jeans and a stuffed animal." Farlan shrugged, as he motioned for another drink.
"Not the shittiest choice." Levi mumbled as he brought his glass to his lips.
"Thank you Levi." Farlan held his glass up for a toast, and Levi indulged him, gently tapping his glass against Farlan's. Levi knocked back the rest of his drink before pulling out his phone to check his messages.
"What time should I pick you up from the airport?" Levi pursed his lips in thought before responding to Hange's text.
"Six in the morning."  he typed his response quickly and sent it. He had already planned on arriving early to give himself plenty of time to prepare himself for the annual post Christmas party that your family hosted.
"See you then, don't have too much fun in France!" Hange's reply was instantaneous,  Levi hated to admit it but he missed four-eyes and bushy brows. Hell he even missed Erwin's bratty sister.
_____
You draped your arm over your eyes in a feeble attempt to block out the blinding light that was flooding your living room. Although the snow was pretty, it sure was a bitch when the sun hit it, causing the light to reflect sharply in through the large windows in your living room. It was finally Christmas break, and you were enjoying it to it's fullest, basking in your sweats on the couch. Your mom had just gotten back from grocery shopping and was beginning to set out ingredients for the baking that she had planned to do for the rest of the afternoon. Erwin and Hange had gone ice skating with Mike and Nanaba, and planned to all meet up back at your house to assist your mom with the seasonal baking. Your phone chimed on the coffee table and you stretched to check it.
"Coffee and chill? 🥺" You rolled your eyes at Jean's message. He had been trying to contact you relentlessly for the past week. You had evaded him, not quite ready to confront him about his wrong doings. You ignored his text and instead favored to ask Mikasa if she wanted to come over to bake.
"hey I know it's been a while, but want to come over to bake cookies with me today? You could bring Armin and Eren if you want!" You sighed and dropped your phone back down onto the table with a sigh. You were pleasantly surprised by how quickly she responded.
"What time?"
"an hour?"
"See you then :)"  You smiled at the screen as you read her response. You always thought it was cute how she preferred to use characters instead of emojis when she texted. You decided that a shower would be a good idea since so many people were coming over now, so you hustled up stairs. You were thankful that Hange and Erwin weren't home because they had made a habit of interrupting your showers. Whether it was Hange trying to join you in the shower to "save water" or Erwin coming in to take a massive dump while you were in the shower. So you fully took advantage of your uninterrupted shower time while you could. You took your time, washing your hair and the rest of your body and enjoying the hot water. By the time you were finished the bathroom was cloudy with steam from the hot shower. You wrapped yourself in towel and scurried to your room to change. You pulled on a pair of leggings and a cropped fitted turtleneck. You then proceeded to tug on a faded crew neck to complete the look. You loped down the stairs, but paused about half way down. The sound of shoes being toed off and a coat being hung up made you rethink your decision.
"Oh Kenny! I'm so glad you made it!" Your mom gushed and you bristled. It wasn't that you didn't like Kenny, it was just that you weren't expecting him. It seemed that your house needed to keep an Ackerman on hand at all times because as soon as Levi left Mikasa and Kenny began coming around more frequently. Your mom invited Kenny over for coffee on Sunday mornings and you invited Mikasa over for sleepovers and craft nights.
"Hey sorry I'm late, I brought booze though." Kenny's rough voice felt foreign to your ears. Despite his sudden presence at your house he still felt like a stranger to you. Of course you could only blame yourself here, you tried your best to avoid him and his questions, not sure how you felt about the gruff man. He seemed nice enough but you weren't quick to trust him, Erwin certainly wasn't either.
"Ah (Y/n)! Perfect timing! Come down stairs and say hello." your mom called out, you winced but obeyed, descending the last few steps.
"Hey there kiddo, how's it hangin'?" Kenny drawled as you slunk into the kitchen sheepishly.
"Hey Kenny, I'm good how are you?" You asked politely, aiming to please your mother more than Kenny. The man smiled triumphantly and leaned further back into his seat.
"I'm fantastic." he stated with a smug smirk plastered on his lips.
"Mom, I invited Mikasa, Amrin, and Eren over is that alright?" you asked, dismissing Kenny.
"Yeah of course baby, the more the merrier!" she cooed as she continued to set up the mixer and prop up the cook book.
"So my little niece will be joining us tonight?" Kenny affirmed as he stood to help your mother untangle to cord of the mixer.
"Yeah." you trailed off, not sure if this was good or bad. Although the pair had both been frequenting your house recently, they hadn't run into one another yet. You knew that Levi had a bad relationship with his uncle, so you could only assume that Mikasa's relationship was also just as rocky.
"haven't seen that brat since she was in diapers." Kenny mused as he flipped through the cook book.
"really? Well she sure has grown. Such a lovely young woman." Your mother sighed dreamily as she thought about Mikasa.
"Glad to hear it.." Kenny mumbled as he paused on a gingerbread recipe. Before you could decode the meaning behind his bland tone, the door flew open and Hange sauntered in. Today she was dressed for the weather in a downy parka and leggings with a thick crewneck. Erwin followed close behind, dressed in joggers and a t-shirt, he tended to get hot easily. Mike however was different. Mike was dressed for Arctic temperatures with a thick quarter zip underneath his north face and a pair of denim jeans on his legs. Nanaba wore a quarter zip as well but leggings instead of jeans. You rushed to help them shove their coats into the cramped closet and put snowy shoes over vents to melt off the ice. Soon they were all crowding into the kitchen, Mike was quick to help your mom set out ingredients while Erwin went to light the fireplace. Hange was rushing up the stairs and Nanaba was skimming through the cook book.
Ah yes such a familiar scene. You immediately felt better in the presence of the upperclassmen, Kenny seemed to melt into the background as he watched you all fall into a familiar rhythm. Erwin returned to the kitchen, dusting his hands off as he entered.
"Hey." He greeted you with a slight nod before he stooped to pull a baking sheet out of the cabinets.
"How was ice skating?" you asked as you leaned against the counter near Erwin.
"Cold, we saw Petra and Oluo there." Erwin mused as he sat the sheet down with a clatter.
"Really? Are they a thing?" you quizzed, your interest piqued.
"Couldn't say, wouldn't surprise me though." Erwin shrugged, his large frame pressed against the counter opposite to allow Nanaba to squeeze through.
"I don't know Erwin, last time I spoke to her she seemed pretty fixed on Levi." Nanaba interjected as she stooped to pull out a bowl.
"I thought she was over him. He left her hanging at my house a few months back remember?" Mike reminded Nanaba who pursed her lips in thought.
"Oh yeah I remember that...she was upset." Nanaba agreed as she sat the bowl in front of you on the counter.
"Then why was she with Oluo huh riddle me that." Erwin challenged, a sly smirk on his lips.
"Oh they've always been close, doesn't mean she likes him or anything." Nanaba scoffed.
"Well he sure likes her, saw him checking out her ass." Mike chuckled, your mom gasped and hit him upside the head.
"That's enough you guys! (Y/n), Kenny mix cut this butter up." Your mom ordered, grabbing you by the bicep to drag you over to Kenny at the island. She dropped a huge brick of butter in front of the two of you along with two butter knives.
"Oh I can do it on my own mom." you insisted with wide eyes.
"Nonsense, show Kenny how it's done." she slapped you on the back and turned to help Mike crack eggs into the wet ingredients bowl. You and Kenny shared an uneasy glance, you took the knife and sliced the chunk of butter in half. You slid half to Kenny and took the other half for yourself. You began to slice the butter into thin chunks and drop them into a bowl. Kenny watched with raised brows, the knife hanging loosely in his hand. You spared him a glance and an amused huff.
"Just slice it into chunks and drop them in this bowl." you instructed, pushing the bowl closer to him. He chuckled and then began to tediously cut the butter into uneven chunks. You nodded in approval as he began to gain confidence.
"Where does this go once it's done?" Kenny asked as he finished chopping the butter.
"In the mixer." You directed, as you wiped your hands on a damp rag. The doorbell chimed and you weaved through the kitchen to answer it. You were greeted by the familiar faces of Mikasa, Armin, and Eren. The trio piled into the house and kicked off their shoes and shrugged off jackets.
"Perfect timing guys, we just started making cookies." You said as you helped Armin out of his coat.
"Great! We brought our piping tips." Eren said, holding up a plastic bag filled with piping equipment.
"Oh yeah I forgot that you're a natural at cookie decorating Mikasa!" you complimented as you guided them into the kitchen. You placed the bag next to Kenny who was staring at Mikasa with slightly widened eyes, she returned his gaze with a surprised expression.
"Hey hothead!" Hange called out to Eren in a sing song voice as she descended the stairs.
"O-Oh Hange!" Eren cringed at her volume as she swang into the kitchen.
"Hange!" Armin cried out excitedly, you'd known that Armin looked up to the brunette due to her intelligence.
"Aw hello coconut head." she cooed as she ruffled Armin's blonde mop of hair.
"And baby Ackerman!" Hange giggles, turning her attention to Mikasa who was scowling at the brunette.
"So nice to see you all!" Hange gushed as she pulled on an apron.
"That was an awful long shit. You constipated or something?" Mike scoffed as he whisked the eggs.
"Ha ha very funny Mike." Hange scoffed as she sidled up next to Erwin who was crushing almonds loudly with a rolling pin.
"I'm just trying to pick up the slack. Someone needs to make Levi's crass jokes for him." Mike sighed, setting the whisk aside.
"Ah I'm sure he will appreciate the sentiment." Erwin approved with a chuckle and another jaw-rattling smash of the rolling pin.
"Kids why don't you start rolling this dough out and cut them with these." Your mother instructed as she thrust the large mixing bowl into your hands and pointing over to Kenny. You led Mikasa, Armin, and Eren over to the open counter space. Mikasa was side eyeing Kenny as she sprinkled some flour out.
"I want to make a penis." Eren remarked, a stupid look on his face as he looked to Armin for approval.
"That's inappropriate Eren." Armin chided as he reached for the dough in the bowl. He dropped the heavy ball of dough with a thump and a whoosh of flour.
"Hah! I'd like to see it!" Kenny chortled as he brushed some flour off his shirt.
"See he gets me!" Eren chuckled as Armin began to roll out the dough. Mikasa and you both rolled your eyes at the boys. Nanaba breezed by and brushed her hand across both yours and Mikasa's shoulders as she passed.
"You girls want pizza?" She asked with an angelic smile as she stopped by the landline.
"Yes please!" Eren answered before either of you could.
"Shut up Eren!" You snapped before turning to look at Nanaba who was holding the phone up to her ear already.
"Yes please Nanaba, can you put pineapple on one of them?" you asked with a sweet smile.
"Ew pineapple on pizza are you insane?!" Hange screeched from across the kitchen.
"Now now, if you order one with pineapple I'll eat it." Kenny agreed as he pressed a cookie cutter deep into the dough.
"Ugh, you guys are disgusting." Mike shook his head in disappointment as he poured the liquid ingredients into the dry ones for the next batch of cookies.
"Alright everyone be quiet while I order this." Nanaba ordered as she pressed the phone between her ear so she could jot down the orders on a pad of paper. The volume in the kitchen fell from a roar to a soft murmur as Nanaba placed the order. Once Nanaba hung up the phone the bustle picked right back up. The cookie hustle only stopped once all the dough was in the oven and the pizza had arrived.
When it was all said and done you all settled in the living room to watch christmas movies and eat pizza. As the movie began to play you finally took some time to check your phone for the first time all afternoon. You were surprised to see at least twenty messages on instagram from a swagmasterfarlan. You clicked on the first message and your frown deepened.
"cutte assf."
"Let me show you parish"
"I cantreat you right."
":)"
The seventeen other messages followed a similar pattern. You noticed that the last message that had been sent two hours ago. You glanced at the clock and frowned, it was already eight pm. You considered blocking the account but upon checking, you realized that it was Farlan's  side account. You'd seen drunk texts before and these were no different. You glanced up to see Kenny with his hat over his eyes as he snored on the arm chair. Your mom was already dozing off on the couch with her feet in Erwin's lap, Erwin had an arm around Hange who was babbling about special effects to no one in particular. Nanaba and Mike were in their own little world on the floor as they watched the movie. Eren and Armin were joking in hushed voices as Mikasa's head lolled against your shoulder. Yeah you could use some entertainment.
"I would love to see parish."  you smiled at your response as you sent it. Not two minutes later a new message appeared.
"Woh, I'm durnk as shit."
"yes you are swagmaster ;)" you responded with a giggle.
"Let facetime before levi punches my face."  Farlan's words were becoming clearer so you figured that he must be sobering up to some degree.
"Alright."  as soon as the read receipts confirmed that he had gotten the message your phone buzzed as he called you. Mikasa grunted as you shifted to answer the call, you answered on the third ring, thankful for the darkness in the room which concealed your features for the most part.
"Heyyyyy kid!" Farlan drawled, you could tell he was in his apartment, the surroundings familiar due to the times you had facetimed Levi.
"Hey Farlan, nice to finally meet you. I've heard all kinds of things." You chuckled as he squinted at his screen.
"No kidding! Hey what time is it over there?" Farlan questioned as he brought his phone closer to his face, giving you a perfect view of his eyebrows.
"It's about 8:30 here, what time is it in perish?" You mocked his blunder from earlier and he gasped in offense.
"That's cold!" he moaned, playing along with your joke.
"Spell it right next time!" you snickered, you glanced up from your phone and met Hange's curious gaze, her head tilted to the left. When you returned your attention back to your phone you were surprised to see the camera was no longer on Farlan's face. Instead it was spinning, the sound of grunting and shuffling was deafening. You winced the struggle continues for a few moments before there was a thud and a deep groan.
"Get into bed now before I punch your lights out." Levi's voice was gravely and strained with exhaustion as he spoke. Hange's ears were still perked as she tried to figure out who you were on the phone with. Once she heard Levi's voice she stood up and skipped over to the sofa to sit next to you.
"I'm serious Farlan this isn't cute get the fuck in that bed or so help me-" the phone clattered down to the floor, and you could make out the sound of stumbling footsteps.
"What is going on?" Hange asked as she leaned on your free shoulder to see the screen. You shrugged and bit your lip as you tried to decipher what was going on.
"No Levi, I've got to talk to her, she's still on the phone!" Farlan grumbled, his voice sounded a bit far away.
"You can talk to her tomorrow just go lay down already." just by the tone of his voice you could guess that he was pinching the bridge of his nose the way he did when he was frustrated.
"nah I'll just go grab my phone and-"
"No." the sound of bed springs creaking and Farlan grunting hinted that he had been pushed onto a bed. After a few more moments of the bed creaking and incoherent mumbling, the sound of footsteps approached the phone and then finally the camera was turned back towards the ceiling as it was picked up. And then Levi's face filled the screen, his eyes widened in surprise, you snapped a screenshot of the moment much to his displeasure.
"What the fuck." he huffed as he took in both you and Hange's amused expressions.
"Hey Levi! How's it going?" Hange cooed as she angled your wrist to show more of her face.
"How-"
"He called me." You answered quickly as you angled the phone back onto your face.
"why?" Levi interrogated. You simply shrugged as you took in his face. You were relieved to see that he looked the same, maybe his eye bags were a bit darker, and his hair a tad longer. But otherwise, he was the same.
"What are you doing?" Levi continued to grill you, to answer his question you panned the camera around the room, sure to not linger on Kenny who was snoring in the chair across the room.
"Thrilling." he scoffed when you brought the camera back to your face.
"Yeah, we spent the day baking. What about you? Seems like you guys are busy." You began your own interrogation.
"Yeah, Farlan had one too many at the bar." Levi agreed as he dropped down into an arm chair with a heavy sigh.
"And you? Did you have anything to drink?" Hange asked with a sly smirk. Levi's brow creased at her suggestive tone.
"If you must know, no I did not drink.... a lot." he answered.
"Lucky, I wish I was drunk right now." you sighed wistfully.
"I never said I was drunk." Levi clarified.
"Any big plans for your birthday Levi?" You asked, quick to change the subject.
"No, just dinner and gifts." Levi replied with a shrug as he sank into the chair.
"That sounds nice." you smiled, Hange dropped her head to your shoulder, her chin digging into your shoulder as she did so. Levi shrugged and averted his gaze for a moment.
"Where's Isabel?" Hange asked as here eyes scanned the background, which was too dark to really reveal anything.
"In her room playing some stupid video game." Levi scoffed as he cocked his head in the direction which you assumed Isabel's room was.
"Fun." Hange mused as she closed her eyes.
"And you? What are your plans for Christmas?" Levi's question surprised you, but you still answered.
"Same as always, gifts in the morning, breakfast, hopefully be plastered by 2." you sighed, Levi scoffed at your answer but seemed satisfied.
"What about the 26th?" Levi asked carefully. you pursed your lips as you thought about your schedule.
"Hmm well I'm not sure, probably-"
"Oh I forgot to tell you, Annie is hosting a party and asked me if you'd come." Mikasa's sleepy voice startled you.
"Really? Huh that's weird. Are you going?" you asked, tilting your face down to speak to her.
"Yeah. We're smoking weed." Mikasa mumbled, her eyes still shut.
"Guess I'll go too." you shrugged. Meanwhile Hange and Levi shared a wide-eyed glance, this could throw off their plans. More specifically Hange's plans, even more specifically her plan to set you and Levi up.
"Weed?" Levi asked, clearing his throat after the word fell from his lips. You knew that he had smoked the stuff in the past, but recently he had stuck to his juul and the occasional dab pen.
"yeah, Annie has like 30 grams right now." Mikasa answered.
"I've never smoked weed before." you mused, excitement bubbling up in your chest at the thought of the chance for a new experience.
"Eh it's okay." Mikasa shrugged.
"Guess I'll just have to try it for myself." you teased, nudging her with your shoulder.
"Guess you will." Mikasa mumbled before falling silent once more.
"Well there you have it. I'm going to Annie's on the 26th." you smiled as you answered Levi's original question. With the 26th only three days away, it gave you something to look forward to.
"Fine. Do  what you want." Levi rolled his eyes and stood from his chair, his whole vibe seemed to change. You wondered if it had been something you'd said or if he was just growing bored.
"I've got to go. Farlan's phone is almost dead." Levi said as he walked through the apartment.
"Oh well it was nice-" before you could finish he had already hung up, or the phone had died.
"Classic Levi." Hange chuckled as she rose up, stretching her stiff muscles before returning to Erwin's side. You rolled your eyes and sat your phone down in defeat. You reached behind you for a throw blanket to cover you and Mikasa, you shuffled over a bit so you were snuggled between the arm of the couch and Mikasa, who had followed you. Using the arm as a pillow you lied down as much as you could with Mikasa still using your side as a pillow, she had stretched out as well to prop her feet up in Eren's lap. Eren was already passed out, his head leaning against Armin's shoulder, who was in a similar position to you. It was nice, you hadn't made much time for nights like these recently. Since you had spent most of your time with Jean you had neglected your friends, and you felt awful about it.
You had missed them deeply, in fact this had probably been the longest you'd gone without a weekend like this. Your family had been close to the Jeagers since you were babies. Your mom and Dr. Jeager both worked at the same hospital and often worked together, they had only grown closer when your father died of cancer when you were 9. Grisha and Carla had helped your mother our a lot the months following his death. Meaning you spent a lot of time with Eren and Mikasa, and by extension Armin. That same year was when they took in Mikasa since Kenny had been deemed "unfit" for a second child in his care. You assumed that the Jeagers would be coming over for Lunch like they always did on Christmas, as well as Armin and his grandfather. You felt your eyelids grow heavy as you thought about all the preparations that were needed for you to host this year, and before you knew it you had fallen asleep.

“I'm so in love with you
And I hope you know
Darling, your love is more than worth its weight in gold
We've come so far, my dear
Look how we've grown
And I wanna stay with you until we're grey and old
Just say you won't let go”
 ~ Say You Won’t Let Go, James Arthur
~~~
Tom’s leg shook anxiously as he mindlessly scrolled through his phone. Sat right beside him in the unusually quiet German airport was Harry, who could tell something was definitely off with his brother. Harry glanced over at Tom’s phone, but he was just on Instagram, looking at a random dog account, it was nothing out of the ordinary. It wasn’t until Tom started to bite his nails that the younger boy spoke up.
“Why are you acting like you’re going to explode?” He asked. Tom stared at his brother, brown eyes wide with his thumb nail still in his mouth. He dropped his hand from his lips and shut off his phone.
“Uh, um-“ He stuttered, unsure what to say about his nerves.
“Tom-“ Harry started, but he was quickly cut off.
“I’m asking Y/N to marry me.” Tom rushed out, and this time, it was his brother’s turn to have wide eyes.
“No way! Have you told Harrison yet?”
It was a simple question. It really was, and yet Tom felt his mouth dry up at the thought. Harrison was Tom’s best friend; he’d definitely be best man at the wedding, but Harrison was your older brother, and Tom didn’t know how to ask for his permission, even just asking to date you was awkward enough. His leg started to bounce uncontrollably again as he shifted in the uncomfortable chair.
“Not exactly?” Tom replied, and Harry looked at him suspiciously.
“You haven’t told Harrison?” He questioned.
“No.” He sighed, “I know I need to, but I just don’t know how. He’s my best friend, and I know he’ll let be supportive of me and of Y/N. It’s just-“
“It’s a big step.” Harry noted, patting his brother on the shoulder, “But you know he’ll let you, so that’s got to count for something?”
“It does. Right now, I’m more nervous about dealing with the ‘hey I wanna marry your sister’ talk than actually proposing.” He admitted, running a hand through his hair.
Their conversation paused as they heard the airline announce boarding, and the two of them got on the plane with ease. Sitting down beside Tom in an aisle seat, Harry reminded him, “I’ll be honest, I don’t know how much longer I can keep this a secret, so you have a week to tell him before I spill it. I’ve already told Sam.”
“When did you have time to do that?” Tom mumbled, and his brother smiled at him helplessly, pulling on headphones and a sleep mask, ready to sleep for the entirety of the flight, even though it wasn’t a redeye.
Meanwhile, Tom looked at his phone in his hands. His phone, and his heart, lit up as a text from you came through.
“Can’t wait to see you when you land! Love you!” it read, accompanied with several heart emojis. Smiling to himself, Tom typed out a response.
“Love you too! I’m counting down the minutes until I can hug you again!” and he even added the emojis to match yours. Tom let out a sigh when the stewardess called for all phones to be switched off as they prepared for take off. With his phone in airplane mode, he found himself on his photos app, thumbing through his favorite album, compiled with pictures of you, his favorite thing in the world.
The very first photo in the album was actually the very first picture of you two. Though neither of you knew it back then, it was one of the best days of his life, as well as one of the most embarrassing.
They say that you just know when you meet your other half, the love of your life. For Tom, that was very much true; the moment he laid eyes on you, he knew you’d make a lasting impact on his heart. But that couldn’t be farther from the truth for you.
It was your 17th birthday, and, like always, you and your twin brother, Harrison, had a joint party. He invited his friends, which included Tom, and you invited your own friends, including your crush from school. Tom had only been friends with Harrison for a few months, and he had no idea that his friend even had a twin sister.
So as everyone mingled around in your backyard under the colored lights from the patio, you found yourself occupied with Richard (to this day, Tom calls him Dick). Flicking your hair back, you let yourself flirt away with him, and he seemed to be getting into it as well. As he made a joke, you threw your head back in laughter— or well, in forced laughter because he wasn’t all that funny. With your eyes shut, you were completely unaware about the two boys running through the crowd. A body collided into yours and you lost your balance, falling into the pool behind you.
Even though he was the one who ran into you, Tom still blames it on Harrison, who managed to duck around you before Tom could, sending him crashing into you.
The party quieted down immediately as all eyes fell on you and your white dress in the pool. While Harrison couldn’t control his laughter at your embarrassment (like a true brother), Tom found himself frozen as he looked at you. He could still remember his heart thumping louder in his chest; he swore it was love at first sight. As you trudged your way to the stairs, Tom quickly shed himself of his jacket, thinking it’d be best to try to cover your now see-through material.
“Here.” He said to you as you stepped out of the pool, arms crossed over your chest. You eyed him for a moment, trying to see if he was serious, before you scoffed, rolling your eyes at him.
“Dumbass.” You muttered, walking past him and his jacket and into your house. Tom stood there, confused. Surely, you knew it was an accident and you knew he was trying to be chivalrous.
As the party continued around him, Tom shrugged his jacket back on and Harrison came up behind him, still laughing at the incident. “I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of that sooner.”
“What? Pushing a random girl into a pool?” Tom asked, and his friend raised his eyebrows at him in surprise.
“Mate, you realize that was Y/N, my twin sister.” The wide smile on his face did nothing to comfort Tom’s growing guilt and now the poor brunette was on the verge of a meltdown.
“That was your sister? This is her party, too?”
“I should’ve shoved her in that pool the moment Richard started chatting her up.” Harrison stated, putting an arm around his friend. “She’ll get over it.”
You didn’t get over it. You actually completely ignored his existence out of spite for nearly a year. But when you finally did get over it, Tom was glad you did.
The picture wasn’t even really a picture of you two. It was a group photo, taken by your mother after you had changed out of your soaking wet clothes. You stood in the middle of the group photograph, smiling beside Harrison, and Tom stood on the other side of his now best friend (Richard wasn’t in the photo anymore since Tom cropped him out). While it was subtle, Tom wasn’t even looking at the camera; instead, he was looking at you. Harrison loved to make fun of him for having “demon eyes”, but it was still a momentous photograph (which you actually loathed the picture because you didn’t like your damp hair in it).
As the flight took off, Tom busied himself on his laptop. With his phone connected to it, he moved over some of his favorite pictures of you, including the “horrendous” picture from your 17th birthday. He spent the next few hours piecing together the perfect slideshow, feeling his heart soar proudly as he worked on it. Though he still needed to ask Harrison for permission and still needed to get a ring, he figured now was as good a time as ever to work on his proposal plans.
He wasn’t really sure when he’d have an opportunity to talk to Harrison privately in the next week. When they land in London, they’ll be greeted by you and Harrison, probably Sam too, maybe even Paddy and his parents- he wasn’t too sure. Then, he’d spend the next week by your side, trying to get as many cuddles and kisses in as possible to make up for his time away.
The moment their plane landed and he switched his phone back onto its normal setting, a string of texts came through from the family group chat. Judging by the excessive congratulatory texts mixed with “why didn’t you tell us”, he knew Harry’s slip to Sam had gotten out. He could only hope Harrison didn’t know; it’d be a miracle if you didn’t know at this point.
As he left baggage claim with Harry, he looked for you along the pickup curb. He felt a bit disappointed when he spotted Harrison alone by his car, but then the nervousness settled in when he remembered the all important question he had to ask Harrison before he could ask you the other all important question.
“How was the flight?” Harrison asked with a bright smile, opening the trunk of his car for them.
“Slept for all of it.” Harry replied as he loaded up his luggage and Tom did the same.
“Good, just a flight. A normal flight.” Tom stated, a bit too suspiciously.
“You alright?” Harrison looked at him questioningly.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Why wouldn’t I be?” He answered defensively. With his things in the car, he made his way to the passenger seat and took a large gulp of his water, suddenly feeling dehydrated. Harry slid into the backseat, and Harrison made himself comfortable in his driver’s seat.
“I know Y/N said she was going to come, but she got dragged into a mandatory work meeting.” Harrison said, before either could ask about your absence. Tom didn’t answer, he just remained suspiciously quiet. Noticing this, the blonde spoke up, “You sure you’re fine?”
“I want-“ Tom started, before clearing his throat. He looked at his best friend beside him, nervously admitting, “I want to ask Y/N to marry me.”
Harrison was silent for a moment as he maneuvered the car out of the airport. It was probably only a few seconds that he was dead quiet, expression unreadable, but it felt like an eternity to Tom. “We’ll be brothers? Actual brothers?”
“Well, in-laws, but yeah.” Tom replied, still unsure if Harrison was okay with it. Before he could ask, the blonde reached over and punched him in the arm.
“You, dickhead, thinking I wouldn’t let you marry my sister. I thought something was seriously wrong with you.” He laughed.
“So, that’s a yes then?”
“Yes, it’s a yes. I better be the best man.”
“What about me?” Harry asked from the back. Harrison and Tom both turned around to look at him with mirrored raised eyebrows. “Alright, I get it.”
“Have you got the ring yet?” Harrison inquired, facing the road again to drive properly.
“I’ve looked at some, but I haven’t bought any yet. I know how I’m asking though.” Tom went off into a further explanation of his proposal idea. Needless to say, they were all excited about this.
The rest of the drive home was filled with proposal talk, and, when Harrison pulled up to the shared house, he let out a small sigh. “Okay, as much as I want to continue talking about this, maybe we should leave this conversation in the car.”
“Why?” Tom asked, confused by the suggestion.
“It’s nothing.” He shrugged in reply, helping them get their bags out of the car. Tom was just about to question it again when they stepped inside the house, but all thoughts about Harrison’s previous words were gone the moment the door opened.
“Surprise!” You cheered with Tuwaine and the rest of the Holland clan beside you, a ‘welcome home’ banner hanging on the wall behind you all. Tom dropped his bags and hugged you immediately. “Welcome home, baby.”
“I missed you so much, sweetheart.” He mumbled in your ear, before cupping your cheeks to kiss you, not particularly caring about the pda in front of his family.
“Yeah, we’re here, too. Thanks.” Sam piped up, having just greeted his twin with a hug.
“I’m not kissing you.” Tom laughed, before letting go of you to hug his brother and the rest of his family.
“I’m sorry I didn’t pick you up. I was busy planning all this.” You told him, once he came back to you, wrapping an arm around your waist casually.
“I love you. You’re the best.” He smiled at you, pulling you in for another kiss.
“I know.” You teased. Tom just looked at you with the fondest expression on his face, making you furrow your eyebrows at him, “Everything ok?”
“Yeah, why wouldn’t it be?” He replied, brushing it off.
As he looked at you in his arms, he thought to himself. ‘This is absolutely the girl I want to marry.’
fear and loathing in mandeville canyon *7* - final
Tumblr media
A/N: thanks for hanging out, guys. always a pleasure 💜
summary: Shawn & Lilly, derailed, detoured, but maybe not destroyed
warnings: language, butter, adulting
wc: 5.6k
----------
Lilly takes shallow breaths, all her tight core will allow as she carefully raises her legs back up over her head. The pressure at the crown is almost unbearable -- she’s probably still not totally strong enough to support all her weight in her core and arms like this in a tripod headstand, but she’s never been able to successfully raise her legs off the floor. So she can ignore the pesky brain pulsing. For a few seconds.
Lilly huffs and lowers her legs slowly, spread as wide as she can get them, until her feet hit the floor, taking some of the weight off her head. She unfurls to sit, blinks quickly and grins, catching a glimpse of her bright eyes and flushed cheeks in the reflection of the open glass door. Lilly straightens her back and admires herself, strong and stable, the result of a lot of hard fucking work.
She completes her practice as directed by her perky online instructor and lies in supported fish pose a little longer than usual. She rolls her hips, noticing the way it affects each notch of vertebrae in her back.
Her phone buzzes beside her mat. Her nose twitches as she fights a smile. She glances at it, though she doesn’t need to to know who it is.
Shawn: you coming?
Lilly closes her eyes and types back by muscle memory.
Lilly: shhhhh I’m zen
She rests her phone on her stomach and enjoys the way the night breeze sifts through the room.
The phone makes an angrier but muffled sound on her skin. She checks it, expecting a whining plea or a series of emojis. Instead her jaw drops and she chokes on a breath and pushes herself to sit.
Lilly knows this house as well as her own now. She traces her fingers lovingly along the hallway walls as she winds her way down the stairs and follows the music. It’s Harry Styles, which explains a lot.
The sliding doors to the pool are unlatched but shut to keep out the dreaded mosquitos. It’s past dusk now, the sky will go from cobalt to midnight soon. The pool lights make the water glow a smooth, clean turquoise. It’s interrupted by the boy in the shallow end with his arms hanging on the side, wearing a smirk that barely contains a goofy grin.
Lilly toes carefully over the gravel, hissing as it bites at her feet. The song changes to “Watermelon Sugar,” which incidentally is very appropriate, given the contents of his last text. He notices it too and that smirk gets even dopier.
Lilly shakes her head and glides to the edge of the pool, curling her opalescent painted toes over the edge. She crosses her arms and waves her phone.
“Is this a tease or an actual invitation?”
Shawn lifts a shoulder coyly. He draws a hand into the water and wiggles his fingers through it, looking casual. “Both, I guess. I got you out here, didn’t I?”
Lilly laughs and nods, glancing around. He already grabbed towels for them both when he came out here an hour ago to do laps, part of his regular routine now.
She hears movement in the water and looks down to see him wading toward her. He blinks innocently through wet, dark lashes and places a gentle kiss to each of her big toes, then rests his cheek on her feet.
“Your sushi’s inside on the counter,” he murmurs.
Lilly nods. “I’ll get it later.”
While his eyes are down, Lilly lifts her ribbed crop tank over her head and tosses it on a nearby chair. He lifts his head in time to watch her bare nipples harden in the breeze. His eyes bulge.
“Uh oh, I’m in trouble now,” he teases, kicking off the wall to float on his back as he watches her undress. She wriggles out of her leggings and panties while keeping her eyes on the hills and valleys of his torso.
As she rounds the corner of the pool to take the stairs, Shawn straightens up, sniffing and pushing his hands back through his hair. He opens his arms to her. She walks right in, tucking her arms and legs around him. His content sigh is so heavy the water ripples around them.
His hands wander her back and tangle in the ends of her hair, which looks redder and silkier in the water. Their heads rest side by side like they each need the other to hold them up. Lilly turns her face into his ear, giving his cartilage a lick and greedily sniffling the chlorine in his hair.
“I’m pretty sure that’s the dirtiest text you’ve ever sent me.”
She feels him chuckle and holds him even tighter. He scoops his hands down around her ass and starts to wade deeper into the water.
“You inspire me,” Shawn whispers, swaying with her toward the edge, where he can pin her up against the tile wall. She hisses upon contact with the cool stone and he takes the opportunity to steal a kiss.
It’s languid, exploring. She’s pretty sure he knows better than to try to fuck her in the pool. That’s only hot in movies. She thinks maybe he just missed her.
“How’d it go today?” she hums.
“Good. Mostly. There are still a few pieces that need to come together for the first two tracks and I’m still not quite getting what I want for track eight, but it was productive.”
Despite their circumstances, Lilly and Shawn have been pseudo-functional adults lately. Once the tent (as they’ve taken to calling the makeshift recording booth) went up, Shawn buckled down to focus on recording and working with producers and the other musicians tracking instruments. Lilly has finally tossed herself full time into writing, breaking for yoga and snacks and to visit him, if she’s super quiet, which she’s not, so she always gets politely kicked out after a take or two.
“How ‘bout you?”
Lilly pecks at the corner of his mouth and nods. “Also good. I almost totally rewrote that scene from yesterday but honestly I feel a lot better about it. It has some life in it now.”
“Good,” Shawn purrs, aiming his lips down at her shoulder. She smiles and tilts her nose into his hair again. Greedy, greedy.
“And… I finally did it.”
Shawn lifts his head and watches her like her face will give him a clue. In a matter of seconds, he lights up.
“Shut the fuck up. The whole way?”
Lilly’s cheeks scrunch with the effort of her smile. “The whole way. Probably killed a bunch of brain cells, but I did it.”
“Lill, that’s nuts! That’s so awesome!” he cries, squeezing her tighter, “Shit, I wanted to film it! I was gonna put it on Insta and tag you as #fitspo!”
Lilly snorts and drops her forehead to rest against his. “What a fun way to announce us to the world.”
“That I’m having really hot yoga sex with my really hot, stretchy girlfriend? I love that for me.”
Lilly cackles, dropping her head back against the stone. Shawn plods kisses up her throat.
“Will you show me later?” he asks, speaking into her wet skin.
“Not tonight, you’re going to be very busy, remember?”
Shawn goes quiet and still for a moment, then jolts with a laugh. “Uh huh, right. So busy. All night long kinda busy.”
Lilly can’t hide her squirm. Shawn gathers her in off the wall so she’s plastered against him, their noses brushing.
“That’s the best kind of busy.”
+
“Don’t headbutt me, don’t headbutt me, don’t headbutt me…”
Lilly’s quite sure he can’t hear her, even though he’s lying on top of her. He refused to get out of bed to get the phone charging cord, so he rolled over onto Lilly, his head on her chest under the sheets, as his hand flails toward the ground.
Lilly’s face scrunches up as he grunts and wriggles.
“Don’t headbutt me, don’t--”
“Huh?”
Shawn lifts his head straight into Lilly’s chin, even as she tries at the last second to tilt it away. His enormous head smacks into the base of her jaw, making her clench down on her tongue. She wails.
“Shit! Fuck, I’m sorry!”
The cord is forgotten. Shawn pushes himself up over her and cups her jaw, nudging his lips over the bridge of her nose. He pulls back after a few seconds to inspect her.
Lilly swats at him. “Fuck. God, you’re like Megamind only… less blue. I think my tongue is bleeding.”
She sticks her tongue out and lifts her eyebrows. “Ih ih ee-ing?”
Shawn looks closer. “Nope.” He cradles her face in both hands and kisses her soundly, sliding his tongue against hers, pressing a warm sigh out of her sleepy morning body.
“There, all better,” he determines, folding himself down beside her.
“That’s as close to vampirism as I ever hope to get with you,” Lilly grumbles, reaching for her phone. She allows his apology kisses as she scrolls through Twitter and brushes her toes against his calf.
Her shoulders drop. She exhales and puts the phone down. The sheet comes up over her head. Shawn follows curiously.
“What?”
She’s quiet for a few seconds. “Lover Fest is cancelled.”
Shawn makes a murmur of acknowledgement and tucks his arm around her, pulling the covers higher over both of them. The morning light is diffused through the clean white sheet.
“You kinda knew it would be, though,” he points out, sounding dejected for her.
Lilly’s face crumples into a pout. “I mean, yeah, but I just think it sucks that the universe has chosen to keep me from Taylor. My spiritual big sister. My celestial homegirl. Fate keeps us apart and its cruelty is weighing on me.”
Lilly feels safe enough to get melodramatic in front of Shawn for several reasons, not the least of which is that he, too, can pitch an impressive fit when he wants to. He also chooses not to judge her for complaining about a cancelled concert when millions of people around the world are sick and dying, of which she’s well aware. The guilt hits her secondarily, a privilege in and of itself.
“I’m so gross. I have no right to be upset about this right now.”
Shawn lifts some coppery strands out of her face and tucks them behind her ear. “You’re allowed to care about both.”
Lilly remains grouchy and unconvinced.
“Plus, the universe can’t keep you from Taylor forever, since we’re friends.”
Lilly keeps her eyes down and sucks at her front teeth. Shawn nudges her.
“What?”
Lilly’s expression doesn’t change, save for her eyebrows lifting. Her eyes remain unfocused on her legs. Shawn noses at her temple. Her eyes shut.
“Lillian, what?”
Lilly squirms and lifts the sheet over their heads, letting the world back in. She slides out of his arms and out of the bed, crossing to the chair for her cozy shorts and a big shirt.
“... nothing. It’s nothing.”
She knows she’s not getting away with it, not even close. She doesn’t want to look at him to see just how much she’s not pulling this off.
“Baby, come on.”
Lilly takes a long moment to blink and turns to face him. He’s shirtless and flushed in their rumpled sheets. She tilts her head and sighs, drifting back to him. She gets a knee up on the bed and slides her fingers into his curls. They seem to hug around them like her hand belongs there. He’s staring up at her like a woodland creature.
“Nothing. We should stop fucking and go call our moms before they realize that we’re total heathens.”
Shawn swallows uneasily but seems ready to drop it, for now. He takes her wrist to his lips and chuckles.
“My mum already knows.”
“About you, maybe, not about me.”
Shawn smirks and releases her, watching Lilly trail off in search of a cozy phone spot.
“Tell your mom happy mother’s day from me,” he calls.
Lilly looks back at him as she pads down the hall. “And tell yours from me.”
+
Lilly watches, entranced, as each pat of butter melts seamlessly into the silky pot of mashed potatoes. She’s not thinking, she’s not measuring, just feeling. Butter. Butter. More butter. She adds a whole stick before she realizes what she’s doing. Her gaze darts over her shoulder. Shawn is facing away from her at the other countertop, muttering to himself as he pulls out ingredients for Yorkshire puddings. She mashes her lips together and turns back, whisking hard to incorporate all her sins.
Cooking has become nearly as meditative as yoga recently. After spending their first few weeks together abusing their bodies in different ways, cooking feels like healing now. The grill took them a few attempts to master, and they side-stepped some potentially life threatening disasters to do it, but now they char slabs of eggplant and zucchini and ears of corn wrapped in tinfoil. They roast potatoes in the oven with fresh herbs and olive oil. Cooking brings them together at the end of the day and gives them a way to take care of each other and themselves.
Mother’s Day presented the perfect opportunity to expand their repertoires and distract themselves from missing their families. The Sunday roast was Lilly’s idea -- whole roast chicken with thyme butter, creamy mashed potatoes, roasted root veggies and Yorkshire puddings with gravy. Mother’s Day Sunday roast is a Mendes family tradition, one Shawn hasn’t been around for in a few years. He had hoped to be home for this one. Lilly decides to bring some home to him.
His arm is hard and warm, wriggling between the stove and her waist as he winds it around her. His other hand presents her with a glass of white. She accepts the kiss on the side of her neck and pretends to stir to look busy.
“Oh, hi,” she murmurs into the wide-bowled glass.
“Oh, hi,” he chuckles, giving her a squeeze, “I saw the butter.”
Lilly huffs. “Goddamnit.” She can’t shake her stupid smile though. He was watching her when she wasn’t watching him.
“Gonna kill us both,” he purrs into her skin, like he doesn’t mind one bit.
“My plan all along.”
Shawn hums in response and backs off, to Lilly’s chagrin.
“Batter’s ready, chef.”
Lilly turns the range down low to keep the potatoes warm. She turns and waves him over, gloving her hand with an oven mitt to get the hot muffin tin from the pre-heated oven. She holds it as Shawn pours batter into each cup.
“The trick my mom taught me is not to open the oven door once they’re in there,” Shawn reports with a nod, watching as Lilly closes the door and sets a timer. Lilly glances at him suspiciously.
“This isn’t my first rodeo, kid, who do you think you’re talking to?”
Shawn raises his eyebrows, a hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “An American.”
Lilly’s eyes bulge and her jaw drops. She swats him across the chest with her mitt, but lets him cradle her up against him anyway.
“You take that back!” she squeaks.
“I know, I’m sorry, I know you hate being reminded.”
Lilly and Shawn sit on the floor and watch the little popovers rise. They don’t open the oven door even once until the timer goes off.
Lilly puts on John Mayer again over the house speakers. They’re eating in the actual dining room today to be fancy, figuring their setting should match their food.
“He’s been soothing my achy soul lately,” Lilly sighs, dropping into her seat, immediately crossing her legs so her foot brushes up against him. Shawn nods absently but his eyes narrow a little at his potatoes. Lilly’s grin takes up half her face.
“You’re jealous!”
Shawn completes the eye roll his face was begging him for. He finishes chewing and sits back to glare at her. “Of course I’m jealous. Why is my music not enough for your achy soul? Why do you need Mayer?”
The teasing lilt in Shawn’s voice just makes Lilly laugh harder. “You love him even more than I do.”
“I do,” he sighs, “Maybe we could FaceTime with him soon and he can soothe you directly.”
Lilly feels herself going magenta. Shawn doesn’t toss around his celebrity weight, or even work his friend connections very often, but when he does, he does it with purpose. Lilly attempts to stay cool. Ish.
“I would not say no to that,” she attempts lightly, but her face-splitting smile gives her away. Shawn grins knowingly and bobs his head.
“I’ll text him. Maybe I can talk to Taylor, too, get you your own personal Lover Fest.”
Lilly’s smile falters a little. Her gaze drifts to her plate. She shoves a forkful of potatoes in her mouth. Shawn notices a shift.
“What?” His mouth is full.
Lilly swallows and lifts a shoulder casually. “I just didn’t figure you were really in a place to be asking Taylor for favors anymore.”
The song changes to a track Lilly doesn’t know. The air seems to crackle. Shawn sits forward as Lilly sits back. She manages to lift her eyes from her crispy chicken skin.
“What do you mean?”
Regret fills Lilly’s gut faster than the food. She takes a long sip of wine.
“I mean after what happened last year.”
He didn’t really need her to clarify, she knows. She also knows he doesn’t require further detail.
He comes up on his elbows, his brow furrowing. “I can probably guess what you think happened, but it’s more complicated than that.”
Lilly exhales and drops her fork, crossing her arms. Shawn looks alarmed.
“I have no doubt you can guess what I think, because you know me pretty well. And you probably also know I think it’s bullshit.”
Shawn’s eyes harden. “Lilly, you don’t know everything. You weren’t there. I don’t owe you an explanation for this, you weren’t involved.”
Lilly’s lips tighten at the corners, the kiss of death. Shawn’s shoulders tighten further, pulling up toward his ears.
“Yeah, I’m sure you think you don’t. Maybe that’s exactly what’s wrong,” Lilly jabs.
Shawn looks baffled. “What the fuck are you talking about? You’re the one who’s always telling me I don’t owe everyone everything. But now suddenly I owe people every detail? It had nothing to do with me.”
“You thinking it had nothing to do with you is a huge fucking problem, Shawn! It is a privilege! No one has threatened everything you’ve built. Why would they? You’re a white man. And you sat down and shut up when she needed you.”
The muscle in Shawn’s jaw twitches. “You don’t know shit about what I did, you weren’t fucking there. Stop pretending like you know everything. It’s fucking complicated, okay? Jesus, Lilly.”
Lilly deflates and folds her hands, pressing her forehead into them. “Let’s not do this. Let’s just not fucking do this, this was supposed to be nice. Can we not? I don’t want to fight.”
She looks up at him, pleading.
Shawn doesn’t hesitate. “I want to fight.”
Lilly blinks. “What?”
He nods urgently. “I do. I want to fight. Let’s fight, let’s figure it out and get through it. Let’s fucking fight, Lill, because it’s so much better than being fucking silent.”
Lilly swallows. Her stomach lurches. Shawn does not waver.
“Fine. Tell me, then. Tell me what you did. You texted her?”
Shawn scoffs. “I didn’t just fucking text her, I called her. We talked for like an hour. And if she were here, she’d tell you that and she’d say we’re totally fine, we’re good. Because we are.”
Lilly pushes a hand into her hair and feels the tears in her eyes. “No you’re not. You’re not fine. You showed up and did the bare minimum, Shawn, you’re not fucking fine.”
His eyes get huge. “What the fuck, Lilly? You don’t even know her!”
“I don’t have to!” she cries, throwing her arms up, “I don’t have to know her personally to know how many texts and calls she got from guys like you who felt bad but wanted to stay out of the way, stay in their lane, stay out of trouble. When you look at the ratio of women who spoke up compared to men, it’s fucking sad, Shawn. And honestly, I did not expect you to land on the wrong side of that, I really didn’t. But that was just the start.”
He narrows his eyes. “The start of what?”
“You shut down. You just… shut down. You got the girl and then fucked off. You have to know that’s what it looked like to everyone.”
“I fucked off because literally everyone was telling me to. Lilly, I swear to god, if you saw the kind of stuff people were saying to me, about me, about her…”
Lilly feels a chill down her spine. She’s desperate to crawl away from this.
“Shawn--”
“Everyone hated me. Everyone hated us. What was I supposed to do?”
Lilly chews on her lip and mutters, “Maybe not post that gross make out video, for one thing.”
He inhales so sharply Lilly looks up at him. His nostrils are flared. Did he get taller in the last two minutes?
“It was a fucking joke, Jesus Christ.”
“Yeah, well, you were the only two who thought it was funny.”
Shawn takes a breath and scrubs his hands over his face, then back into his hair, holding it back as he stares down at his food.
“I know the video was stupid. It wasn’t supposed to make people so mad.”
Lilly shifts in her seat uncomfortably. She takes his olive branch and returns with one of her own.
“Listen, I’m not gonna sit here and defend your entire fandom. I know better. I know a lot of the shit you guys took was unfair. But the distance came from both sides, Shawn. You alienated them, they alienated you right back. It doesn’t matter who shot first. That distance is still there.”
Shawn doesn’t argue her point. He draws a crispy corner of Yorkshire pudding through his gravy and pops it in his mouth. “I really thought the Foundation would turn it around, but it only made it worse.”
Lilly winces. “But you get why, right?”
Shawn clicks his tongue. “No, but I’m sure you’ll tell me.”
“It’s hollow, Shawn. It didn’t feel like you. Your heart wasn’t in it. It was like someone put your name on it and said ‘okay, guys, tell us what you want this to be.’ I mean, what is it? What do you want it to be?”
Shawn looks hurt. Lilly wonders if she should’ve pulled back a little, then thinks about what he said earlier.
I want to fight.
Lilly realizes maybe she wants to fight too. If fighting means fighting for this, for them, Lilly will get her gloves on and go to work. She steels herself.
“The whole point was to give a voice to my fans, to be the way they can make a difference. Have them act through me. That’s what I liked about it!”
Lilly shuts her eyes. “But it wasn’t your idea.”
She knew that already without him having to say it. The circumstances made that clear.
“Andrew pitched it, but I approved it,” Shawn snaps.
“Then do something with it!” Lilly cries, “Show some ownership! Show everyone you care what it means, what it does. You’ve always been so good at that. It’s one of the reasons people love you so much. Why people were hurt when you disappeared. Suddenly you were either nowhere, or you were with her. People missed you. I fucking know I did.”
Shawn’s shoulders begin to sink. The tense feeling clenching around Lilly’s ribcage loosens. Shawn reaches a hand out, face up on the table. Lilly slips hers into his and watches his thumb rub her skin.
“I didn’t know you were still paying attention,” he whispers.
Lilly lets the past several months drift over her face. “I tried not to.”
What’s left of their food is cold. Mayer’s voice feels loud in the absence of their yelling. They gaze at each other, looking and feeling haunted. Shawn is first to break the silence.
“I don’t want it to be like this. I… I don’t think I want to tell everyone everything all the time, but I don’t want it like this either. I can’t be afraid to talk to my fans.”
Lilly nods. “There’s a middle ground. You can find it.”
Shawn studies the veins in the translucent skin of her wrist. “Will you help me?”
Lilly smirks. “When you want me to, sure. But you don’t need me for that, Shawn.”
He’s silent for a long time. Lilly watches the tears gather in his eyes as they soften.
“But I do need you. I fuckin’ need you, Lill, you know that right?”
Lilly nods eagerly. “I know.”
He doesn’t seem satisfied. “No, I mean, of course I need you, but I want you. I want you so bad, all the time, every day. In every way I can have you. You make everything in my life better. And I swear to god, if you let me, I’ll make sure I can do the same for you.”
Lilly squeezes his hand. Her heart swims up into her throat and pushes out the words she hasn’t said in almost a year. “I love you.”
Shawn illuminates from the inside out. His cheeks go a vivid pink. He squeezes her hand right back and pulls it up to his lips. “I love you too, Lilly.”
Lilly cups his cheek. Her smile is small and quiet, but it’s not fragile.
The song changes. The opening notes are so distinctive, they have Shawn and Lilly smiling knowingly in under three seconds.
“See?” Lilly squawks, “John just gets me.”
Shawn rolls his eyes and pushes his chair back, holding his hand out to her. “Whatever. John may ‘get you,’ but I have you. C’mere.”
Lilly gasps, eyes sparkling. She looks to his face, then his outstretched hand, then back at his face. She’s vibrating in her seat.
“No!”
“Yes!” Shawn laughs. Lilly springs out of her chair and takes his offer before he can reel it back in. He holds their clasped hands to his chest and grins as she takes her place between his bare feet. They bob along awkwardly beside the table, cast in powder blue dusk from the floor-to-ceiling windows.
“Fucking finally, it’s like, why even bother putting John Mayer on if no one’s gonna ask you to dance?” Lilly crows, looking smug.
Shawn pecks the tip of her nose and pulls her closer. She rests her cheek on his chest.
“Now we see everything that’s going wrong
With the world and those who lead it
We just feel like we don’t have the means
To rise above and beat it…”
Shawn sings along and Lilly doesn’t even pretend like that wasn’t exactly what she wanted. She stares up at him, delighted by his total willingness to satisfy even the little whims she doesn’t say out loud. They don’t notice when the song changes. Lilly magnanimously decides not to step on Shawn’s foot when he says that her body, too, is a wonderland.
But she does prove it to him again later that night.
Epilogue
July 28th, 2020
Lilly squints up at the sky. It’s so blue that her retinas ache, but she finds what she needs.
“Look! Look, a cloud. Not safe to fly. You should stay. Come on, chop chop, bags down. You’re staying.”
Shawn drops his backpack into the trunk of the town car. His eyes are hidden behind mirrored aviators, but Lilly doesn’t need to see them to know his smile doesn’t quite reach them.
“I’m going to remind you again this was your idea,” he sighs.
Lilly scrunches her face up in protest but it doesn’t push away the tears building in her eyes like she hoped.
He’s right. It’s been almost a month since they had the first conversation about it. It wasn’t nearly as scary when it was hypothetical. It started with an innocent comment, Lilly joking about Shawn not having anything to write about if they’re together and happy all the time.
“You need some angst. How are you ever gonna miss me enough to write about me if we’re standing on top of each other all day every day?”
Shawn brushed it off, but it took hold in both their minds. It was another full week before they had a real conversation about it. Lilly cried and Shawn stared in horror, then held her.
“We cannot become real again in a vacuum. I love you, I love this, but it’s not real life. I want you for real. I need this to be real,” Lilly pleaded.
Negotiations ran in circles for a while. Maybe they just needed a change of scenery, Shawn suggested. They could take a little safe vacation somewhere, rent a place in Malibu or Big Sur. Distance wasn’t the answer. It couldn’t be.
But distance is their reality when the world is not on fire. Lilly does not work in an industry that permits her to follow Shawn around on tour or promo. Even if she did, they agree that arrangement could get emotionally fraught pretty fast. Lilly argues they have to get good at the distance again, since that was one of the factors that broke them up to begin with. Shawn insists that if they’re lucky enough to be together and safe during this time of crisis, there’s no reason to give it up.
Back and forth, round and around and around again. There was no compromise to be made. They were either together or apart.
Shawn tearfully agrees one night. Lilly is immediately horrified.
“No. No, I’ve changed my mind. Don’t go. Shawn, don’t go. Don’t let me bully you into this. This is a terrible fucking plan. Why would you leave? Everything is good!” she sobs.
Shawn wipes his eyes and tucks her into his chest so she can cry without him staring at her.
“You were right, Lill. If we’re ever going to be more than this, we have to start. We have to get better at it.”
“But this is already so good! Shawn, if you leave now, we have no way of knowing when we’ll see each other again. Things are already getting worse. What if you can’t get back?”
Shawn’s jaw clenches. It’s the one thing they haven’t said out loud. This distance could be more permanent than they intend for it to be if the pandemic continues to worsen in the U.S. There’s a possibility that if he leaves now, they won’t see each other again in 2020.
“We’re gonna figure that out,” he insists, wiping his hard calloused thumbs beneath her eyes, “If I have to marry you to make you a Canadian citizen and get you the fuck out of here, I will.”
Lilly’s heart skips a beat even as her eyes narrow. “What a romantic you are.”
Shawn chuckles, but it’s a dull, wet sound through his own tears. He arranges his pre-flight COVID test and buys a ticket home to Toronto the next day.
Without Shawn, and with her roommates calming down and staying virus free, there’s no reason to stay in this big house by herself. They take down the recording tent and send the equipment back. They carefully pry Command hooks off the ceiling, erasing the evidence. They latch up the doors on the balcony for good. Lilly’s car is packed; she’ll head back to Burbank right after Shawn leaves.
The summer breeze ruffles his curls, which she cut again recently so he doesn’t look like a sad sheepdog when he goes home to his mum, after the allotted two weeks of quarantining at his place in Toronto. He reaches for her, and her throat immediately burns, like it was holding off until he touched her again.
“I have terrible ideas. Don’t ever listen to me again,” Lilly half sobs. Shawn folds himself around her. She clings to him, digging her fingernails into the seams of his denim shirt. She feels his shaky exhale and feels ten times worse.
“What did I do?” she hiccups, “Why did I do this?”
Shawn lays his cheek on top of her head and sniffs before he speaks. “Because you want us to be real. Because you know it’s going to be different this time.”
Lilly breathes out slowly. Shawn loosens his grip and shifts to take her face in his hands. His cheeks are patchy pink, his eyes are a little bloodshot. He presses kisses to her forehead, her cheeks, the tip of her nose, and her lips. They kiss until they’re dizzy.
Shawn lets go, maybe because he knows she won’t. He reaches for the door of the car to anchor himself.
“You know how much I love you, right?” Lilly rasps.
Shawn nods. “I know. You know how much I love you, right?”
Lilly’s face crumples. She can’t speak. She nods.
Shawn smiles. “Then we’re gonna be okay.”
Lilly covers her nose and mouth as he climbs into the back of the town car. She stands there until it’s beyond the gates of the driveway and out of sight.
Lilly turns and looks up at the house. It’s not the first time she’s considered the mysterious magic of the place. In its age and grandness, Lilly knows hers is not the only gift it’s given. Theirs are not the only secrets it holds. She’s resigned to never knowing the rest, content with taking what it offered and hoping they left it with some of their own magic, too, for whomever needs it next.
Catra works at Burger King pt 3
Tumblr media
catradora in ther modern party clothes!
AO3
pt1/2
Catra was currently studying in the library, trying to work her way through a math problem.
Her place didn't have internet, so she usually alternated between the school wifi, the public library, and Burger King. Lonnie usually let her study in the break room when the libraries closed up.
Her phone pings with a message, obviously from Adora.
Catra picks up her phone and unlocks it, eyebrow raising when she sees the message.
Adora:
Wyd?
Catra sighs. Of course that airheaded jock texted like a frat boy. As much as she wanted to leave her on read, a deal was a deal.
Catra:
Studying.
Adora:
So diligent! You're so cool, Catra :)
Adora:
I'm weightlifting right now! Gotta work off all those BK calories 💪
Great, maybe she will leave her alone to go do her workout.
Adora:
Catra almost drops her phone when she sees the photo Adora sent. It was a shot of her by the mirror, and she was flexing with a dumbbell. She was wearing a black crop top, which framed her abs perfectly.  What was she doing, getting flustered over what, a gym rat photo that looked like it belonged on a Tinder profile? After much gay panic and debate, Catra takes a photo of herself with her middle finger up to the camera. She taps ‘send’ angrily.
Catra:
[image.attachment] 🖕 She doesn't get a response for a few minutes, which was odd. Usually Adora typed back at the speed of lightning.
Ping.
Adora:
wow Ur rlly hot  Catra looks at the text, slack jawed. What the hell?
Adora:
Oh my god I am so sorry. That was Glimmer, she took my phone.
Catra could almost scream, but she was in a public library. She settles for furiously chewing her out, sharp nails flying over the keyboard.
Catra:
Plz make Ur excuses more believable. It's so unoriginal I can't even post this on r/OopsDidntMeanTo.
Adora:
I really didn't mean to 🥺
Adora:
I mean
Adora:
Glimmer didn't mean to  God, Adora was so stupid. Yet here Catra was, blushing like a fool. When she doesn’t answer for a while, her phone starts pinging again with notifications.
>Adora liked your photo
>Adora liked your status >Adora reacted to your comment >Adora liked your photo
It goes on for another 23 times and Catra scrolls through it, dumbfounded. Unblocking her was a mistake.
----
As promised, Adora would visit her garage when her shifts were over bringing groceries. In exchange Catra would cook, as it seemed like Adora would burn water if she tried.
It started off as a weekly thing, but in a true Adora-like fashion it ended up like this everyday. They would talk for hours, catching up on their lost years together.
Adora talked about all sorts of things, like how hard it was adjusting to the soft beds at first and how she requested a hard one. She told her about the contents of the letters she would send to Catra that never went received. Catra just listened, gratified to hear that Adora missed her in their time apart even half as much as she did.
They would sing the little songs they invented back when they were kids and make up whole new ones as they waited for the food. Adora even started learning how to cook after watching Catra, and she would barge in uninvited with new recipes. The food tasted better with company, and Adora took great pleasure in piling her seconds.
Catra would show her the local dumpster and they would go scavenging for items they needed. She taught her how to repair the things they found using Youtube tutorials, and how to disinfect them. It was fun watching Adora try to haggle for prices at the market, or her face when she realized she had to use the outhouse to go to the bathroom at Catra’s.
Days bleed into months, their easygoing friendship making Catra feel at peace for the first time in forever.
Right now they were currently in their trial exam period, which functioned both as practice for their final exams and half of their final marks. They were sitting in the library, chatting about their future majors.
Catra taps a pencil to her chin. ‘Let me guess, you want to do art. No, art history.’
‘Political science, actually! Did you know Eternia University has  the  number one ranked Political Science course in the entire country?' Adora says, flipping through the uni coursebook.
'Wao, future leader of the free world huh? That's kinda hot.' Catra teases, while Adora swats her in embarrassment.
'What about you?'
'Double degree of Law and Social Work.' Catra replies. 'Cliche I know. But I just want to be in a position where I can sue the shit out of Shadow Weaver. The system is corrupt, and there's thousands of kids being abused.'
'Wow, you're so cool Catra.' Adora says in awe. 'You're so smart, you'd definitely get in.'
'Damn right.' She scoffs, crossing her arms.
'You're gonna love Eternia. I went to their open day, the campus is gorgeous. Oh my gosh we could dorm together!'
'Gross, who'd want to be  your  roommate?'
'You  would.'
'Ew, you're so full of yourself. Anyway get off me, I have work soon and I need to get changed.'
'Ah yes, the cute Burger King apron. I never get tired of it.'
They would always flirt back and forth like this, but nothing ever came out of it.
With her friendship came the feelings that she had repressed long ago, unknotting and resurfacing like they had never gone at all. However she had no idea if Adora even liked her in that way, given how affectionate she was with Bow and Glimmer. She was popular with boys and girls alike, but she never dated anyone. Catra never dared to ask.
Once Adora had fallen asleep in Catra's bed, and the brunette had woken up to the other girls arm around her and their feet tangled together. It reminded her of when they shared the bed as kids, but now they were grown up and this kind of thing didn't have an innocent meaning anymore. Having her there made her heart race and her palms sweaty.
She had wanted to kiss her then. She wanted to kiss her now. Catra wanted every single morning to end up like that.
--
Adora:
Your birthday is soon! Did you want anything?
You  , Catra thinks, like a huge sap.
Catra:
My sanity back.
Adora:
Oh my gosh, we could throw you a party at my place! You’re turning 18 right? We could go out drinking! Angella has this amazing vintage wine collection and I could make cocktails!
Catra receives another wall of text, basically planning the entirety of this birthday party with Bow being the DJ and how Glimmer could make these buns that were to die for. Adora starts going through the entire party guest list until she has to cut in.
Catra:
lol calm down
Adora:
Does this mean Ur on board? 🎉
Catra:
yes fine since you won't shut up about it
Adora:
AAAAAAAH YOU'RE THE BEST!!!!!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️ U WILL NOT REGRET THIS
DW I WILL PLAN EVERYTHING <3333
💗💖💖😻
The excessive amount of heart emojis make Catra grin dumbly into her palm.
She's glad they're not video chatting, or Adora would've already taken a screenshot.
---
It’s the day of her 18th birthday, and she’s nearing the end of her shift. The best friend squad were waiting for her at their usual table so they could give her a ride.
‘Hey Catra. Can I speak to you out back?’ Lonnie asks, gesturing outside.
What the heck, did she do something wrong?  It’s been pretty peaceful as of late, and Catra tries to remember if she had done anything to Kyle recently. She nods, chucking her apron at the back as she tries not to notice Adora’s eyes following her.
 Catra goes out to the back of the store, the night air nipping at her shoulders. Lonnie waits for her there, biting her lip.
‘What’s up? Don’t tell me you’re giving me a raise.’ Catra jokes.
Lonnie looks conflicted, and she takes a big breath.
‘I’m sorry but our store isn’t doing so well. I know you’re turning 18, and that means we can’t afford to keep you on anymore.’
‘What…?’
Catra felt numb, like she wasn’t really there in the back alley with Lonnie. It felt like an out of body experience. She could only stare at her, betrayed.
Like Lonnie could read her mind, she tries to correct herself. ‘It wasn’t my decision, it was Octavia’s.’
Of course it was. Her regional manager was the reason she could never just swipe food while she was working. Octavia never liked her, she always reviewed the security cameras and told her off for goofing around. She must’ve known the door incident was on Catra’s shift, and what really happened despite Adora’s cover up. This ‘layoff’ was just an excuse to get rid of her from a financial standpoint.
‘Thank you for all your hard work over these past 3 years. I know you’re going through a rough time, so we will of course give you a recommendation.’
Catra just nods.
She returns to her shift, robotically going through the motions. Catra doesn’t even say anything sassy when Adora asks for a burger with no patty and no onions and no sauce, only cheese on bread.
The lack of a clever comeback to their gag routine has Adora concerned. ‘Are you okay?’
Of course she wasn’t. How could she be? She was going to have to vacate her garage space, not like she had anywhere to put her furniture in. What the hell was she going to do?
‘I’m fine.’ She says, even though tears were threatening to burn a hole in the back of her eyelids. ‘Just...rough day.’
‘It’s your birthday! The party will cheer you up.’ Bow says brightly. ‘I have the sickest playlist of all time, you're gonna love it.'
'My mum isn’t home so we have free reign over the entire house! Come on girl, let's get you changed!' Glimmer crows, too excited about the party to pick up on Catra's mood. 'Makeover time!!'
The two of them force her into Glimmer's Mercedes, on their way to buy every alcohol imaginable from the bottle shop before they go to her house.
The last thing Catra wanted to do was play dress up or even go to her party, but Adora had planned for so long for this. It would definitely ruin the entire night if she refused to go.
Out of all the times they had hung out, she’s never been to Adora’s house. She leans her head against the window when they drive into the fancy part of town, by the lakeside with the multi-million dollar yachts parked in the water.
That still doesn't prepare Catra for when security lets them in through the black gates to the biggest mansion she’s ever seen. There were fountains, perfectly manicured lawns, a tennis court, and was that  a helicopter pad?!
It was incredible, she had only seen this kind of luxury in the movies. So Glimmer was rich , rich. No wonder she was put out that Adora had her 18th birthday at Burger King.
Catra looks at Adora with a dumbfounded expression as the attendants let them in, and the blonde looks almost embarrassed when they have to get into an elevator to go to her room.
Glimmer picks out a hybrid of clothes from her and Adora's closets. The walk-in wardrobe is huge, like a department store full of designer clothes, shoes, jewellery and bags.
Her wardrobe alone is the size of Catra's home. The brunette suddenly understands why Adora cried upon seeing her concrete garage space. Looking at it, she wanted to cry too.
Glimmer sets her down on her huge poster bed as she brings out a checkered crop top, ripped black garter shorts and an expensive looking black leather jacket with a gold trim. While Catra reluctantly gets changed, Glimmer picks out a pair of black strappy heeled boots and a hair straightener to battle the bush on Catra’s head.
She sits still while Glimmer goes to work on her face, bringing out an entire Sephora’s worth of makeup. When Catra looks in the vanity mirror, she almost doesn’t recognize herself. Her eyes were framed with false eyelashes, a swooping cateye, smokey eyeshadow, sharp contour and her lips were now cherry red with bold lipstick. Glimmer applies the finishing touches with silver rings and clip on piercings.
She hears Adora inhale with shock from the staircase in her bedroom.
‘Catra you look incredible !’ She gasps. Adora was wearing this cute backless white dress tied with strings, short enough that it cropped above her knees. She was wearing sparkly wedges to go with it, and her hair was curled instead of her usual ponytail. Her delicate gold sword necklace frames her collarbones.
Catra’s throat goes dry. ‘Uh- You too.’
 Glimmer smirks, satisfied with her work. She gets changed into her own outfit, a short purple tulle lace dress with a white fur trim and a cute Gucci clutch to accompany it. The pink haired girl spritzes them all with her various floral and sea spray scented perfumes before they head back downstairs.
‘Wow you guys look amazing!’ Scorpia marvels, and Adora’s friends voice their approval as well.
‘Gosh this place is crazy.’ Scorpia whispers to Catra. ‘Did you see their pool? We should’ve just held the swimming carnival here!’
Catra opens her mouth to tell her how Lonnie had let her go, but Sea Hawk’s booming voice interrupts them.
'I challenge you to the ultimate game of BEER PONG!' Sea Hawk announces, spinning the ball on his fingertips.
Of course this gets everyone's competitive spirit going, and everyone gets into pairs.
After a few drinks Catra has almost forgotten what she was worrying about earlier, too focused on the buzz. Her and Adora demolish the other teams by a landslide with their impeccable aim.
Soon the attendants came out with dinner, and it was lavish with every food you could imagine. Lobster, kobe beef, hor d'oeuvres, beluga caviar, kale, and opulent ice cream were all among the plates of food on the table. They bring out a massive 3 tiered truffle cake, the words 'Happy Birthday' written with an oddly crude drawing of Catra.
'You drew this?' She asks, and Adora nods happily. 'You worked so hard on mine, so.' Catra doesn’t have the heart to tell her that the cake was $7 and the drawing of her forehead was meant as an insult.  They sing the birthday song for her, and this time no one brings up the cake cutting tradition.
 After dinner they sit outside in the garden around the bonfire Sea Hawk had made. He was drunkenly singing a loud shanty while Bow piled in the wood, fanning the flames. Frosta sips on a mocktail, the only one there who wasn’t old enough to drink yet. The fire flickers and dances, casting shadows around them.
Catra downs a few more cocktails and jello shots as she waits for Mermista to light up some fireworks. Apparently it was illegal, but Mermista just waved her off, telling her that she’ll just pay the penalty fee as Catra’s birthday gift. Sea Hawk really did rub off on her.
When she successfully sets them off they light up the sky in dazzling multicoloured sparks. Adora’s friends whoop with glee, taking photos and videos to commemorate the moment.
Adora's side profile is lit up in the dark, and she looks impossibly beautiful among the backdrop of stars. Longing tears at her chest, Catra wants to hold her hand but her throat feels too tight and she can’t move. The truth was that she knew she had always had feelings for Adora, even back when they were just kids back in the foster home. But like a coward, she could never voice them for fear of Adora leaving her side.
A loud neighing can be heard from the stables in response to the loud booming noises from the fireworks.
'Swifty!' Adora says, standing up. The moment's breaks and Catra reels back her hand. 'Stay here, I'll be right back.'
Her chance disappears, she couldn’t say it after all. She watches her go tend to her horse, feeling stupid.
‘Yoohoo~, want a rematch?’ Sea Hawk calls out from the patio, pouring vodka into tiny glasses.
‘Don’t mind if I do.’ Catra replies. She definitely didn’t know her alcohol tolerance levels yet, so it was the perfect time to take that to the test.
Catra confidently does a whole line of shots, determined to drink herself into unconsciousness. Every time she sees a flash of Lonnie or Adora’s face in her mind, she takes another swig. Everyone is cheering her on, screaming the song ‘Shots’ over and over again, also all drunk out of their minds. Sea Hawk taps out at the 5th drink, and everyone screams at Catra’s flawless victory. Scorpia lifts her into the air to do a victory lap, cheering.
Adora finally makes an appearance, alerted by the sound of Catra's shrieky laughter as Scorpia swings her around.
‘Don’t worry, I can take it from here.’ Her school captain says pulling Catra away from her friend. Scorpia just shrugs and makes her way to the food table. ‘Catra, maybe you should slow down.’ Adora tells the giggling girl in her arms.
‘Noo way.’ She slurs, she was enjoying the feeling too much, the alcohol burning through her body, making her feel lightheaded. The light up disco dancefloor starts to blur into a kaleidoscope of colours.
‘You got some weed?’ Catra asks, seeing Perfuma light a bowl. The taller girl hands her an already rolled up one and Catra snatches it to take a long drag. The smoke hits her lungs and she starts coughing.
‘Oi Perfuma, why did you bring drugs? Angella will kill me!' Adora gripes, trying to wrestle the blunt away from Catra.
‘Aw don't be like that! I made some edibles for you guys to try.’ Perfuma says cheerfully, pointing to the pot brownies.
‘See? Scorpia likes them.’ She gestures at the other girl, who seemed to be currently tripping out of her mind and eating everything on the table.
Catra goes to reach for one, but Adora grabs her by the wrist to lead her back inside. 'Alright, you're done for the night. Everyone say bye!'
‘Byee Catra!’
‘Happy birthday!!’
Adora grabs her by the waist to lead her to her bedroom, Catra wobbling after her in the heels Glimmer lent her.
'Ugh Adoraaa, don't be such a party pooper. I'm fine.' She moans, leaning heavily on the other girl. 'Don't you have a shift tomorrow afternoon? I don't want you getting hungover or drug tested.' Adora chides, rummaging around the dark for the light switch.
Catra snorts. 'Oh you don't have to worry about  that  anymore. Got laid off.'
Adora looks at her in confusion, until realization dawns on her. 'Wait, is that why Lonnie took you outside?'
'Say, I never got to give you  your  birthday gift.' Catra pushes her hair back, voice sultry as she flings off her jacket. She never pinned herself down as a horny drunk, but here they were. Catra shoves Adora onto the bed, straddling her. Her golden hair spills over the mattress, soft like spun silk.
'You still want that kiss?' Catra whispers in Adora's now burning red ear. 'My knife touched the bottom.'
Adora's face now resembled a fire truck, mouth gaping in shock.
'C-Catra, I…'
Catra presses their lips together, silencing her. She knows she probably tastes like alcohol and weed right now, but she couldn't care less in the moment. Adora's mouth is still slack jawed from mortification, so she takes the opportunity for tongue. She frowns and moves down to her neck when Adora doesn’t return the kiss.
'Catra, what are you doing-'
Catra bites down on Adora's nape. The blonde underneath her lets out a soft gasp, arching her back. Her gold manicured nails dig into her shoulder.
'Stop, you're not thinking straight-!'
'Sure ain't.' Catra grins, licking a stripe down the base of her neck. Adora’s necklace chain jingles with the movement. There was now an impressive hickey there, blooming violet on her pale skin. She pauses to admire her handiwork.
'This isn't you talking, you'll, you'll regret this in the morning.' Adora stutters. She's shivering, their hands now laced together, silver rings clanking.
'I know. I don't care.' She replies, kissing her again. Adora's teeth nick her lip. The alcohol in her system makes her feel lightheaded, confident. No way would she have managed this sober. Adora tastes better than she does, sweet like blueberry soju. Catra's hands wander down further, pulling the strings to untie the back of her dress-
'Catra stop!'  Adora suddenly shouts, striking Catra across the cheek in a deafening  slap .
Adora's eyes were blazing, almost teary in the dark. Her breathing was irregular, panting in and out. Catra stills, clutching her cheek. The look in her eyes sobered her immediately.
Adora looks down at her palm, realizing what she just did. 'Sorry for hitting you!' She flounders. 'It's just that, you're only doing this because you’re drunk and upset, right?’
Catra just stares at her before climbing off. Cold realization settles as the fog in her brain clears. 'You're right. Forget it.'
She sits on the edge of the bed, numbly watching Adora hurriedly trying to re-tie the back of her now wrinkled dress. Her lips are stained with Catra’s red lipstick. Adora catches her looking, and she quickly turns away to smooth down her hair with her fingers. 'You've had more than enough to drink tonight. I’ll get you some water to clear your head.’
She gets up to turn on the light switch, and Catra blinks in the harsh light from the chandeliers.  ‘Come on, let’s get you sobered up, okay?’ Adora leads her to the kitchen on the same floor, gingerly placing her friend on the slippery bar stool.
The blonde goes to get the chilled jug of infused water from the fridge and pours it into a glass. Adora slides it across the island, and Catra reluctantly takes it. She sips at it, mint and lemon on her tongue. It tasted way better than her hose water.
‘I’ll uh, pick out some groceries for you since we’re here and all.’ Adora says awkwardly into the silence, turning around to rummage through her pantry.
Suddenly Catra is brought back to the whole reason why she was sitting here in this oversized mansion in the first place. Their friendship agreement. The one she had just violated. Catra had never felt more stupid to mistake Adora’s kindness and guilt for actual feelings. She felt like a charity case, waiting to collect food from the soup kitchen.
Of course Adora didn't like her back. She just saw her as someone needing to be saved. The product of survival guilt. Catra wanted to whack her head on the corner of her marbled countertop and not wake up.
Adora takes out a green plastic bag, and starts filling it with everything and anything she can get. Cans, pasta, biscuits, fruits and vegetables. Actually this feeling was more like being one of those poor kids that white girls would pose next to for their Instagram after their trip to Africa.  Did Adora have fun, volunteering to slum it up in her place while she returned here? All she ever wanted her entire life was to be Adora’s equal.
Scorpia and Sea Hawk's loud laughter and DJ music can be heard downstairs in the garden, beyond the tall golden trimmed windows. The class difference between them stretched like an unfathomable canyon. Living the classy bougie dream until the clock struck midnight and she was back in her run down garage. Except soon she won’t even have that anymore. Why did Adora have to bring her here? It was almost cruel.
Catra's suddenly overcome with the urge to vomit. She nearly falls off the high chair in her rush to throw up the unholy cocktail of alcohol into the sink. Tears bead in her eyes from the sour taste as she continues to vomit out everything she ate that night. She can feel Adora by her side, patting her back reassuringly.
It was by far the worst birthday she has ever had.
 --
The morning of, Catra woke up in Adora’s bed with a splitting headache.
Unfortunately she was  not given the gift of amnesia, as she vividly remembered every last excruciating detail about last night.
She spots Adora’s mop of blonde hair under a blanket on the floor, even though there were a billion other free spare rooms to sleep in. Adora was probably too afraid to share the same bed as her now.
Catra’s borrowed crop top digs uncomfortably into her skin, and she angrily flings it off her body. The shorts stick to her like a second skin, smelling of tequila. She grabs her old Burger King uniform and puts it on, though even this didn’t belong to her now.
Adora shifts in her sleep, and Catra lightly steps over her to get to the door. The last thing she wanted was for Adora to wake up.
As soon as she’s out, she runs out to the elevator and bangs frantically on the buttons until it sends her to the bottom floor. The lift opens with a  ding  and in her haste she almost crashes headfirst into Glimmer.
‘Oh hey! Are you going to work?’ Glimmer greets. She was in her silk pajamas and slippers, holding a glass of orange juice.
‘Uh. Yeah.’ Catra lies, trying her best to look natural.
‘Some party last night huh? Lucky today is a Saturday.’ Glimmer says conversationally, unaware of Catra’s urge to throw her across the room. ‘Hey, what happened to your cheek?’
Catra clutches her face, it still strung from where Adora struck her. ‘Nothing.’
Glimmer raises an eyebrow. ‘Well anyway, did you wanna stick around for  breakfast? The cooks made pancakes, bacon, eggs, the whole deal.' She peeks behind Catra. 'Is Adora  still  not up yet?’
As much as Catra wanted to scream  get out of my way she schools her expression to her best customer service smile. ‘Nope she’s still sleeping it off. Anyway I’m gonna be late so I can’t stick around.’
‘Did you need a lift?’ Glimmer asks. It dawns on the brunette she couldn’t exactly run the entire way back home. ‘I’ll ask one of the drivers to take you back so you make it to your shift.’
Catra thanks her lucky stars that Glimmer was still too hungover to drive her. She wouldn’t have been able to dodge her questions if she had.
‘Yes please.’ Catra says, giddy with relief. ‘Thank you.’
‘Ooh and before I forget, Adora told me last night to give you this.’ Glimmer says, grabbing the green bag of groceries off the counter. The shorter girl bundles it into Catra’s arms before she can object.
‘Get home safe.’ She says, waving as the attendant leads her out the door.
Catra looks down at the cans of food in her arms and doesn’t say anything.
 ------
The days leading up to graduation were painful, to say the least.
They more or less pretend the kiss didn't happen. Adora never brings it up, and neither does Catra.
She would stare at the ceiling, wishing she had never gotten piss drunk at her birthday and kissed her. Adora was right, she did regret it. It was awful, the look on Adora's face when she slapped Catra replays in her mind and nightmares over and over again. It was mortifying.
Adora still messages her every 3 days, and Catra still replies, though her words are empty and devoid of banter.  I'm worried about you,  she says.  I'm fine , Catra always responds.
The brunette continues to humour her to keep the peace, only shutting down when her old job was mentioned. Catra doesn’t allow Adora back into her home again.
Sometimes they study together, but she can't concentrate when Adora wears her glasses. Her heart hurts, so she cradles her cheek and tries not to remember.
The hickey she had branded Adora's neck with had been covered with foundation until it faded away. None of her friends had teased her about it, so she clearly had not told a single soul what had happened.
Catra bites at the scab on her lip from where Adora’s teeth nicked her until it bleeds. She wants to apologize, but the words stick on her tongue and she can't bring herself to talk about that night.
Catra knew Adora was only here by her side to alleviate her guilt. Shame buries itself under her skin every time she's near her, like she was too embarrassed to even exist in the same space as Adora. She wants to disappear.
Exams are hard, and without an internet connection after the library closes at 6pm made it difficult to study. In her heart she knew she wasn't going to come out on top. Her ranking had slipped, she wasn't even at second place anymore. Rent was due at the end of the month, and without her Burger King wage she knew she'll be kicked out sooner than later.
Catra felt stressed and self destructive, and the only thing that kept her from falling off the edge completely was Scorpia. As much as she hated depending on others, she'd much rather her old coworker than Adora.
Her classmates seemed to like this new, muted down version of Catra who didn't argue and just stayed quiet most of the time. Fighting back was too difficult when all she wanted to do was blend into the wallpaper. All they talked about was where they were going for vacation after graduation, and Catra certainly had nothing to contribute to that conversation.
She felt like crying, all the time. It was agony, wanting to burst out into tears randomly while she sat wasting away in the student council room. Despite herself, she missed Burger King, and she just kept getting ghosted or rejected in her other job applications. Sometimes when she really wanted to indulge herself, she'd go cry silently in the school toilet stall.
Glimmer notices the change, and she catches her glaring. 'You don't seem as alive lately. Your eye bags are huge.'
'S'fine.' Catra replies, hiding her hands so she doesn't see how they shake. Honestly Catra couldn't remember the last time she slept.
'Pfft, don't lie to me. Adora's worried about you. You're getting skinnier, and your eyes are always raw. All you do is stare into space.'
Catra bites down on her nails. Of course she knew that. But she's gone through this before, and she'll do it again.
'What happened between you two?’
‘None of your business.’ Catra replies, shuffling her way to the hall.
--
 Their graduation ceremony starts off uneventfully. Every student’s parents except Catra’s sit proudly in the audience, eager to watch their kid graduate. One by one they receive their certificate and return to their seats.
Adora and Catra stand side by side onstage, as Adora makes their final speech as School Captain. Through the blinding lights, she sees Angella waving proudly at her adoptive daughter in the crowd.
Catra looks at Adora in the corner of her eye. She must look pathetic, lovesick and pining after someone she couldn’t have.
‘It’s been such an honour serving the entire faculty and students of this school. I couldn’t have done it without my amazing Vice-Captain and all of my prefects. Now I’m proud to hand over my badge to the next School Captain, Frosta.’
They go through the rest of the ceremony like that, each member of the student council handing their badges to their successors.
Soon their Principal comes up to the podium, tapping it once and clearing her throat.
‘Announcing our honor student, and the winner of the scholarship to Eternia University…’ Castaspella says, turning over the sign card.
‘None other than our school captain, Adora!’
Everyone starts clapping, and Adora walks across the stage to shake Castaspella's hand.
Sounded about right. Catra never won against Adora in her entire life. She had already expected this outcome. Like a game of cat and mouse, going over and over for all eternity.
Adora would excel with her elite education and secure a well paying job. Catra would struggle at the bottom indefinitely, never amounting to anything. She never would, if Adora was still there next to her. When the blonde re-entered her life, everything she had been working towards for years just collapsed. Her job, her home, her School Captain status, her chance at the scholarship, her sanity.
She had to be wiped clean. A fresh start.
The flower petals were falling, the streets decorated with a vibrant pink. The other students mill out of the crowd with their parents, chatting excitedly about what was next in their futures. She waits for Adora underneath a tree.
'Congratulations.' Catra says, when she finally spots the other girl in the crowd. Adora pulls away from Angella’s embrace to meet her.
'You deserve this so much more than I do.' Adora says, her voice pained like she didn't just win a full ride to her dream university. 'You should take it.'
'It's in your name, silly.' Catra replies, lightly tapping her with her rolled up certificate.
'Besides, I knew you'd get into Eternia, so I never applied.'
Adora blinks dumbly. '...What? Aren’t we going to the same university?’
She always was a bit slow on the uptake. ‘Only  you  decided that, stuupid. Say, it's about time we ended this right?'
‘Catra, what are you...'
'Our deal. You don't need to feel guilty anymore or bring me anything.' Catra says, her voice sounding like it didn't belong to her. She rummages in her bag, bringing out Adora's spare varsity jacket that she hadn’t returned. 'Here, take this. Thank you for all the help.'
'What do you mean? You want to stop being friends?' Adora says in disbelief, taking the jacket.
Catra nods. ‘I can’t continue with the arrangement. I hope you understand.’
‘I don’t! Was I the only one who thought we were friends, real ones?’ Adora asks.
‘...That’s right. I never saw you as a friend. You were just a meal ticket to me. Are you happy now?’ Catra snaps back. Shit, that wasn’t what she meant to say. She had planned to end this quickly and painlessly, on a high note.  Trust Adora to put up a fight.
Something seems to click in Adora’s brain. ‘Is this about the night of the party?’
‘Figure that out yourself.’ Catra replies, turning to walk away.
Adora grabs onto her arm. ‘Wait! If- if that’s what you want, I’ll give it! Just don't go!'
This dumb blonde really was offering up her body, out of what? A sense of duty? How stupid.
‘Is that right?’ Catra says, walking closer to her. Adora backs up until she is pinned to the tree. They’re face to face now.
‘Can you really do this?’ Catra lifts Adora’s chin by a finger.
Finally it seems to dawn on Adora exactly what Catra wanted. She swallows, biting her lip.
There’s a flicker of hesitation, before Adora’s eyes squeeze shut defiantly. The blonde is shaking like a leaf, her breath coming out in panicked stutters from her pursed lips.
Catra just stares at Adora’s scrunched up face impassively. Her scared reaction was the only confirmation she needed for closure.
She flicks the other girl’s forehead, and her big blue eyes open in confusion. ‘Chill out, I’m not that evil to do it to someone so unwilling.’
 Adora blinks, clutching her forehead. ‘Catra?’
Suddenly Angella’s voice cuts through their conversation from the car park. ‘Adora dear, are you done chatting with your friend? We have reservations!'
‘Um, I…’ Her old school captain opens her mouth to say something, but Angella's started to lose her patience. 'Adora, how long are you going to stand there? Glimmer is already waiting for us at the restaurant!'
Catra just smiles tiredly. ‘Take care, dummy.’
She watches Adora being dragged off unwillingly by her adoptive mother to the car.
Catra lets out a sigh. Her phone pings with a message from Scorpia, and she knows it's time to go.
---
 By the time Angella releases her from their graduation celebration, Adora can feel that it's already too late.
 Adora:
Please, can we talk? Let me fix this
A pop up appears over the screen.
Message Not Sent
This person isn't receiving messages at this time.
Adora sends another message, but they all go undelivered. Catra had blocked her again. Panic spikes through her veins, and she quickly dons on a jacket and grabs her car keys.
She sneaks out that night, down the familiar winding path through the bush that led to Catra's place.
'Catra?' She rolls up the garage door, blinking in the darkness. When her eyes adjusted, she found Catra's old home completely emptied.
All the furniture and items her friend had collected over the years, they were all gone. The little stove where they cooked, the old mattress where they talked late into the night, all vanished like they were never there.
A single green plastic bag remained on the floor untouched, filled to the brim of food.
 pt1, pt 2
Catra was currently studying in the library, trying to work her way through a math problem.
Her place didn't have internet, so she usually alternated between the school wifi, the public library, and Burger King. Lonnie usually let her study in the break room when the libraries closed up.
Her phone pings with a message, obviously from Adora.
Catra picks up her phone and unlocks it, eyebrow raising when she sees the message.
Adora:
Wyd?
Catra sighs. Of course that airheaded jock texted like a frat boy. As much as she wanted to leave her on read, a deal was a deal.
Catra:
Studying.
Adora:
So diligent! You're so cool, Catra :)
Adora:
I'm weightlifting right now! Gotta work off all those BK calories 💪
Great, maybe she will leave her alone to go do her workout.
Adora:
Catra almost drops her phone when she sees the photo Adora sent. It was a shot of her by the mirror, and she was flexing with a dumbbell. She was wearing a black crop top, which framed her abs perfectly.
What was she doing, getting flustered over what, a gym rat photo that looked like it belonged on a Tinder profile?
After much gay panic and debate, Catra takes a photo of herself with her middle finger up to the camera. She taps ‘send’ angrily.
Catra:
[image.attachment] 🖕
She doesn't get a response for a few minutes, which was odd. Usually Adora typed back at the speed of lightning.
Ping.
Adora:
wow Ur rlly hot
Catra looks at the text, slack jawed. What the hell?
Adora:
Oh my god I am so sorry. That was Glimmer, she took my phone.
Catra could almost scream, but she was in a public library. She settles for furiously chewing her out, sharp nails flying over the keyboard.
Catra:
Plz make Ur excuses more believable. It's so unoriginal I can't even post this on r/OopsDidntMeanTo.
Adora:
I really didn't mean to 🥺
Adora:
I mean
Adora:
Glimmer didn't mean to
God, Adora was so stupid. Yet here Catra was, blushing like a fool. When she doesn’t answer for a while, her phone starts pinging again with notifications.
>Adora liked your photo
>Adora liked your status >Adora reacted to your comment >Adora liked your photo
It goes on for another 23 times and Catra scrolls through it, dumbfounded. Unblocking her was  a mistake.
----
As promised, Adora would visit her garage when her shifts were over bringing groceries. In exchange Catra would cook, as it seemed like Adora would burn water if she tried.
It started off as a weekly thing, but in a true Adora-like fashion it ended up like this everyday. They would talk for hours, catching up on their lost years together.
Adora talked about all sorts of things, like how hard it was adjusting to the soft beds at first and how she requested a hard one. She told her about the contents of the letters she would send to Catra that never went received. Catra just listened, gratified to hear that Adora missed her in their time apart even half as much as she did.
They would sing the little songs they invented back when they were kids and make up whole new ones as they waited for the food. Adora even started learning how to cook after watching Catra, and she would barge in uninvited with new recipes. The food tasted better with company, and Adora took great pleasure in piling her seconds.
Catra would show her the local dumpster and they would go scavenging for items they needed. She taught her how to repair the things they found using Youtube tutorials, and how to disinfect them. It was fun watching Adora try to haggle for prices at the market, or her face when she realized she had to use the outhouse to go to the bathroom at Catra’s.
Days bleed into months, their easygoing friendship making Catra feel at peace for the first time in forever.
Right now they were currently in their trial exam period, which functioned both as practice for their final exams and half of their final marks. They were sitting in the library, chatting about their future majors.
Catra taps a pencil to her chin. ‘Let me guess, you want to do art. No, art history.’
‘Political science, actually! Did you know Eternia University has the number one ranked Political Science course in the entire country?' Adora says, flipping through the uni coursebook.
'Wao, future leader of the free world huh? That's kinda hot.' Catra teases, while Adora swats her in embarrassment.
'What about you?'
'Double degree of Law and Social Work.' Catra replies. 'Cliche I know. But I just want to be in a position where I can sue the shit out of Shadow Weaver. The system is corrupt, and there's thousands of kids being abused.'
'Wow, you're so cool Catra.' Adora says in awe. 'You're so smart, you'd definitely get in.'
'Damn right.' She scoffs, crossing her arms.
'You're gonna love Eternia. I went to their open day, the campus is gorgeous. Oh my gosh we could dorm together!'
'Gross, who'd want to be your roommate?'
'You would.'
'Ew, you're so full of yourself. Anyway get off me, I have work soon and I need to get changed.'
'Ah yes, the cute Burger King apron. I never get tired of it.'
They would always flirt back and forth like this, but nothing ever came out of it.
With her friendship came the feelings that she had repressed long ago, unknotting and resurfacing like they had never gone at all. However she had no idea if Adora even liked her in that way, given how affectionate she was with Bow and Glimmer. She was popular with boys and girls alike, but she never dated anyone. Catra never dared to ask.
Once Adora had fallen asleep in Catra's bed, and the brunette had woken up to the other girls arm around her and their feet tangled together. It reminded her of when they shared the bed as kids, but now they were grown up and this kind of thing didn't have an innocent meaning anymore. Having her there made her heart race and her palms sweaty.
She had wanted to kiss her then. She wanted to kiss her now. Catra wanted every single morning to end up like that.
Adora:
Your birthday is soon! Did you want anything?
You, Catra thinks, like a huge sap.
Catra:
My sanity back.
Adora:
Oh my gosh, we could throw you a party at my place! You’re turning 18 right? We could go out drinking! Angella has this amazing vintage wine collection and I could make cocktails!
Catra receives another wall of text, basically planning the entirety of this birthday party with Bow being the DJ and how Glimmer could make these buns that were to die for. Adora starts going through the entire party guest list until she has to cut in.
Catra:
lol calm down
Adora:
Does this mean Ur on board? 🎉
Catra:
yes fine since you won't shut up about it
Adora:
AAAAAAAH YOU'RE THE BEST!!!!!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️ U WILL NOT REGRET THIS
DW I WILL PLAN EVERYTHING <3333
💗💖💖😻
The excessive amount of heart emojis make Catra grin dumbly into her palm.
She's glad they're not video chatting, or Adora would've already taken a screenshot.
---
It’s the day of her 18th birthday, and she’s nearing the end of her shift. The best friend squad were waiting for her at their usual table so they could give her a ride.
‘Hey Catra. Can I speak to you out back?’ Lonnie asks, gesturing outside.
What the heck, did she do something wrong? It’s been pretty peaceful as of late, and Catra tries to remember if she had done anything to Kyle recently. She nods, chucking her apron at the back as she tries not to notice Adora’s eyes following her.
Catra goes out to the back of the store, the night air nipping at her shoulders. Lonnie waits for her there, biting her lip.
‘What’s up? Don’t tell me you’re giving me a raise.’ Catra jokes.
Lonnie looks conflicted, and she takes a big breath.
‘I’m sorry but our store isn’t doing so well. I know you’re turning 18, and that means we can’t afford to keep you on anymore.’
‘What…’
Catra felt numb, like she wasn’t really there in the back alley with Lonnie. It felt like an out of body experience. She could only stare at her, betrayed.
Like Lonnie could read her mind, she tries to correct herself. ‘It wasn’t my decision, it was Octavia’s.’
Of course it was. Her regional manager was the reason she could never just swipe food while she was working. Octavia never liked her, she always reviewed the security cameras and told her off for goofing around. She must’ve known the door incident was on Catra’s shift, and what really happened despite Adora’s cover up. This ‘layoff’ was just an excuse to get rid of her from a financial standpoint.
‘Thank you for all your hard work over these past 3 years. I know you’re going through a rough time, so we will of course give you a recommendation.’
Catra just nods.
She returns to her shift, robotically going through the motions. Catra doesn’t even say anything sassy when Adora asks for a burger with no patty and no onions and no sauce, only cheese on bread.
The lack of a clever comeback to their gag routine has Adora concerned. ‘Are you okay?’
Of course she wasn’t. How could she be? She was going to have to vacate her garage space, not like she had anywhere to put her furniture in. What the hell was she going to do?
‘I’m fine.’ She says, even though tears were threatening to burn a hole in the back of her eyelids. ‘Just...rough day.’
‘It’s your birthday! The party will cheer you up.’ Bow says brightly. ‘I have the sickest playlist of all time, you're gonna love it.'
'My mum isn’t home so we have free reign over the entire house! Come on girl, let's get you changed!' Glimmer crows, too excited about the party to pick up on Catra's mood. 'Makeover time!!'
The two of them force her into Glimmer's Mercedes, on their way to buy every alcohol imaginable from the bottle shop before they go to her house.
The last thing Catra wanted to do was play dress up or even go to her party, but Adora had planned for so long for this. It would definitely ruin the entire night if she refused to go.
Out of all the times they had hung out, she’s never been to Adora’s house. She leans her head against the window when they drive into the fancy part of town, by the lakeside with the multi-million dollar yachts parked in the water.
That still doesn't prepare Catra for when security lets them in through the black gates to the biggest mansion she’s ever seen. There were fountains, perfectly manicured lawns, a tennis court, and was that a helicopter pad?!
It was incredible, Catra could only walk in a daze with her jaw dropped on their polished marble floors. So Glimmer was rich, rich. No wonder she was put out that Adora had her 18th birthday at Burger King.
Catra looks at Adora with a dumbfounded expression, and the blonde looks almost embarrassed when they have to get into an elevator to go to her room.
Glimmer picks out a hybrid of clothes from her and Adora's closets. The walk-in wardrobe is huge, like a department store full of designer clothes, shoes, jewellery and bags.
Her wardrobe alone is the size of Catra's home. The brunette suddenly understands why Adora cried upon seeing her concrete garage space. Looking at it, she wanted to cry too.
Glimmer sets her down on her huge poster bed as she brings out a checkered crop top, ripped black garter shorts and an expensive looking black leather jacket with a gold trim. While Catra reluctantly gets changed, Glimmer picks out a pair of black strappy heeled boots and a hair straightener to battle the bush on Catra’s head.
She sits still while Glimmer goes to work on her face, bringing out an entire Sephora’s worth of makeup. When Catra looks in the vanity mirror, she almost doesn’t recognize herself. Her eyes were framed with false eyelashes, a swooping cateye, smokey eyeshadow, sharp contour and her lips were now cherry red with bold lipstick. Glimmer applies the finishing touches with silver rings and clip on piercings.
She hears Adora inhale with shock from the staircase in her bedroom.
‘Catra you look incredible!’ She gasps. Adora was wearing this cute backless white dress tied with strings, short enough that it cropped above her knees. She was wearing sparkly wedges to go with it, and her hair was curled instead of her usual ponytail. Her delicate gold sword necklace frames her collarbones.
Catra’s throat goes dry. ‘Uh- You too.’
Glimmer smirks, satisfied with her work. She gets changed into her own outfit, a short purple tulle lace dress with a white fur trim and a cute Gucci clutch to accompany it. The pink haired girl spritzes them all with her various floral and sea spray scented perfumes before they head back downstairs.
‘Wow you guys look amazing!’ Scorpia marvels, and Adora’s friends voice their approval as well.
‘Gosh this place is crazy.’ Scorpia whispers to Catra. ‘Did you see their pool? We should’ve just held the swimming carnival here!’
Catra opens her mouth to tell her how Lonnie had let her go, but Sea Hawk’s booming voice interrupts them.
'I challenge you to the ultimate game of BEER PONG!' Sea Hawk announces, spinning the ball on his fingertips.
Of course this gets everyone's competitive spirit going, and everyone gets into pairs.
After a few drinks Catra has almost forgotten what she was worrying about earlier, too focused on the buzz. Her and Adora demolish the other teams by a landslide with their impeccable aim.
Soon the attendants came out with dinner, and it was lavish with every food you could imagine. Lobster, kobe beef, hor d'oeuvres, beluga caviar, kale, and opulent ice cream were all among the plates of food on the table.
They bring out a massive 3 tiered truffle cake, the words 'Happy Birthday' written with an oddly crude drawing of Catra.
'You drew this?' She asks, and Adora nods happily. 'You worked so hard on mine, so.' Catra doesn’t have the heart to tell her that the cake was $7 and the drawing of her forehead was meant as an insult.
They sing the birthday song for her, and this time no one brings up the cake cutting tradition.
After dinner they sit outside in the garden around the bonfire Sea Hawk had made. He was drunkenly singing a loud shanty while Bow piled in the wood, fanning the flames. Frosta sips on a mocktail, the only one there who wasn’t old enough to drink yet. The fire flickers and dances, casting shadows around them.
Catra downs a few more cocktails and jello shots as she waits for Mermista to light up some fireworks. Apparently it was illegal, but Mermista just waved her off, telling her that she’ll just pay the penalty fee as Catra’s birthday gift. Sea Hawk really did rub off on her.
When she successfully sets them off they light up the sky in dazzling multicoloured sparks. Adora’s friends whoop with glee, taking photos and videos to commemorate the moment.
Adora's side profile is lit up in the dark, and she looks impossibly beautiful among the backdrop of stars. Longing tears at her chest, Catra wants to hold her hand but her throat feels too tight and she can’t move. The truth was that she knew she had always had feelings for Adora, even back when they were just kids back in the foster home. But like a coward, she could never voice them for fear of Adora leaving her side.
A loud neighing can be heard from the stables in response to the loud booming noises from the fireworks.
'Swifty!' Adora says, standing up. The moment's breaks and Catra reels back her hand. 'Stay here, I'll be right back.'
Her chance disappears, she couldn’t say it after all. She watches her go tend to her horse, feeling stupid.
‘Yoohoo~, want a rematch?’ Sea Hawk calls out from the patio, pouring vodka into tiny glasses.
‘Don’t mind if I do.’ Catra replies. She definitely didn’t know her alcohol tolerance levels yet, so it was the perfect time to take that to the test.
Catra confidently does a whole line of shots, determined to drink herself into unconsciousness. Every time she sees a flash of Lonnie or Adora’s face in her mind, she takes another swig. Everyone is cheering her on, screaming the song ‘Shots’ over and over again, also all drunk out of their minds. Sea Hawk taps out at the 5th drink, and everyone screams at Catra’s flawless victory. Scorpia lifts her into the air to do a victory lap, cheering.
Adora finally makes an appearance, alerted by the sound of Catra's shrieky laughter as Scorpia swings her around.
‘Don’t worry, I can take it from here.’ Her school captain says pulling Catra away from her friend. Scorpia just shrugs and makes her way to the food table.
‘Catra, maybe you should slow down.’ Adora tells the giggling girl in her arms.
‘Noo way.’ She slurs, she was enjoying the feeling too much, the alcohol burning through her body, making her feel lightheaded. The light up disco dancefloor starts to blur into a kaleidoscope of colours.
‘You got some weed?’ Catra asks, seeing Perfuma light a bowl. The taller girl hands her an already rolled up one and Catra snatches it to take a long drag. The smoke hits her lungs and she starts coughing.
‘Oi Perfuma, why did you bring drugs? Angella will kill me!' Adora gripes, trying to wrestle the blunt away from Catra.
‘Aw don't be like that! I made some edibles for you guys to try.’ Perfuma says cheerfully, pointing to the pot brownies.
‘See? Scorpia likes them.’ She gestures at the other girl, who seemed to be currently tripping out of her mind and eating everything on the table.
Catra goes to reach for one, but Adora grabs her by the wrist to lead her back inside. 'Alright, you're done for the night. Everyone say bye!'
‘Byee Catra!’
‘Happy birthday!!’
Adora grabs her by the waist to lead her to her bedroom, Catra wobbling after her in the heels Glimmer lent her.
'Ugh Adoraaa, don't be such a party pooper. I'm fine.' She moans, leaning heavily on the other girl. 'Don't you have a shift tomorrow afternoon? I don't want you getting hungover or drug tested.' Adora chides, rummaging around the dark for the light switch.
Catra snorts. 'Oh you don't have to worry about that anymore. Got laid off.'
Adora looks at her in confusion, until realization dawns on her. 'Wait, is that why Lonnie took you outside?'
'Say, I never got to give you your birthday gift.' Catra pushes her hair back, voice sultry as she flings off her jacket. She never pinned herself down as a horny drunk, but here they were. Catra shoves Adora onto the bed, straddling her. Her golden hair spills over the mattress, soft like spun silk.
'You still want that kiss?' Catra whispers in Adora's now burning red ear. 'My knife touched the bottom.'
Adora's face now resembled a fire truck, mouth gaping in shock.
'C-Catra, I…'
Catra presses their lips together, silencing her. She knows she probably tastes like alcohol and weed right now, but she couldn't care less in the moment. Adora's mouth is still slack jawed from mortification, so she takes the opportunity for tongue. She frowns and moves down to her neck when Adora doesn’t return the kiss.
'Catra, what are you doing-'
Catra bites down on Adora's nape. The blonde underneath her lets out a soft gasp, arching her back. Her gold manicured nails dig into her shoulder.
'Stop, you're not thinking straight-!'
'Sure ain't.' Catra grins, licking a stripe down the base of her neck. Adora’s necklace chain jingles with the movement. There was now an impressive hickey there, blooming violet on her pale skin. She pauses to admire her handiwork.
'This isn't you talking, you'll, you'll regret this in the morning.' Adora stutters. She's shivering, their hands now laced together, silver rings clanking.
 'I know. I don't care.' She replies, kissing her again. Adora's teeth nick her lip. The alcohol in her system makes her feel lightheaded, confident. No way would she have managed this sober. Adora tastes better than she does, sweet like blueberry soju. Catra's hands wander down further, pulling the strings to untie the back of her dress-
'Catra stop!' Adora suddenly shouts, striking Catra across the cheek in a deafening slap.
Adora's eyes were blazing, almost teary in the dark. Her breathing was irregular, panting in and out. Catra stills, clutching her cheek. The look in her eyes sobered her immediately.
Adora looks down at her palm, realizing what she just did. 'Sorry for hitting you!' She flounders. 'It's just that, you're only doing this because you’re drunk and upset, right?’
Catra just stares at her before climbing off. Cold realization settles as the fog in her brain clears. 'You're right. Forget it.'
She sits on the edge of the bed, numbly watching Adora hurriedly trying to re-tie the back of her now wrinkled dress. Her lips are stained with Catra’s red lipstick.
Adora catches her looking, and she quickly turns away to smooth down her hair with her fingers. 'You've had more than enough to drink tonight. I’ll get you some water to clear your head.’
She gets up to turn on the light switch, and Catra blinks in the harsh light from the chandeliers.
‘Come on, let’s get you sobered up, okay?’ Adora leads her to the kitchen on the same floor, gingerly placing her friend on the slippery bar stool.
The blonde goes to get the chilled jug of infused water from the fridge and pours it into a glass. Adora slides it across the island, and Catra reluctantly takes it. She sips at it, mint and lemon on her tongue. It tasted way better than her hose water.
‘I’ll uh, pick out some groceries for you since we’re here and all.’ Adora says awkwardly into the silence, turning around to rummage through her pantry.
Suddenly Catra is brought back to the whole reason why she was sitting here in this oversized mansion in the first place. Their friendship agreement. The one she had just violated. Catra had never felt more stupid to mistake Adora’s kindness and guilt for actual feelings. She felt like a charity case, waiting to collect food from the soup kitchen.
Of course Adora didn't like her back. She just saw her as someone needing to be saved. The product of survival guilt. Catra wanted to whack her head on the corner of her marbled countertop and not wake up.
Adora takes out a green plastic bag, and starts filling it with everything and anything she can get. Cans, pasta, biscuits, fruits and vegetables. Actually this feeling was more like being one of those poor kids that white girls would pose next to for their Instagram after their trip to Africa.
Did Adora have fun, volunteering to slum it up in her place while she returned here? All she ever wanted her entire life was to be Adora’s equal.
Scorpia and Sea Hawk's loud laughter and DJ music can be heard downstairs in the garden, beyond the tall golden trimmed windows. The class difference between them stretched like an unfathomable canyon. Living the classy bougie dream until the clock struck midnight and she was back in her run down garage. Except soon she won’t even have that anymore. Why did Adora have to bring her here? It was almost cruel.
Catra's suddenly overcome with the urge to vomit. She nearly falls off the high chair in her rush to throw up the unholy cocktail of alcohol into the sink. Tears bead in her eyes from the sour taste as she continues to vomit out everything she ate that night. She can feel Adora by her side, patting her back reassuringly.
It was by far the worst birthday she has ever had.
--
The morning of, Catra woke up in Adora’s bed with a splitting headache.
Unfortunately she was not given the gift of amnesia, as she vividly remembered every last excruciating detail about last night.
She spots Adora’s mop of blonde hair under a blanket on the floor, even though there were a billion other free spare rooms to sleep in. Adora was probably too afraid to share the same bed as her now.
Catra’s borrowed crop top digs uncomfortably into her skin, and she angrily flings it off her body. The shorts stick to her like a second skin, smelling of tequila. She grabs her old Burger King uniform and puts it on, though even this didn’t belong to her now.
Adora shifts in her sleep, and Catra lightly steps over her to get to the door. The last thing she wanted was for Adora to wake up.
As soon as she’s out, she runs out to the elevator and bangs frantically on the buttons until it sends her to the bottom floor. The lift opens with a ding and in her haste she almost crashes headfirst into Glimmer.
‘Oh hey! Are you going to work?’ Glimmer greets. She was in her silk pajamas and slippers, holding a glass of orange juice.
‘Uh. Yeah.’ Catra lies, trying her best to look natural.
‘Some party last night huh? Lucky today is a Saturday.’ Glimmer says conversationally, unaware of Catra’s urge to throw her across the room. ‘Hey, what happened to your cheek?’
Catra clutches her face, it still strung from where Adora struck her. ‘Nothing.’
Glimmer raises an eyebrow. ‘Well anyway, did you wanna stick around for  breakfast? The cooks made pancakes, bacon, eggs, the whole deal.' She peeks behind Catra. 'Is Adora still not up yet?’
As much as Catra wanted to scream get out of my way she schools her expression to her best customer service smile. ‘Nope she’s still sleeping it off. Anyway I’m gonna be late so I can’t stick around.’
‘Did you need a lift?’ Glimmer asks. It dawns on the brunette she couldn’t exactly run the entire way back home. ‘I’ll ask one of the drivers to take you back so you make it to your shift.’
Catra thanks her lucky stars that Glimmer was still too hungover to drive her. She wouldn’t have been able to dodge her questions if she had.
‘Yes please.’ Catra says, giddy with relief. ‘Thank you.’
‘Ooh and before I forget, Adora told me last night to give you this.’ Glimmer says, grabbing the green bag of groceries off the counter. The shorter girl bundles it into Catra’s arms before she can object.
‘Get home safe.’ She says, waving as the attendant leads her out the door.
Catra looks down at the cans of food in her arms and doesn’t say anything.
------
The days leading up to graduation were painful, to say the least.
They more or less pretend the kiss didn't happen. Adora never brings it up, and neither does Catra.
She would stare at the ceiling, wishing she had never gotten piss drunk at her birthday and kissed her. Adora was right, she did regret it. It was awful, the look on Adora's face when she slapped Catra replays in her mind and nightmares over and over again. It was mortifying.
Adora still messages her every 3 days, and Catra still replies, though her words are empty and devoid of banter. I'm worried about you, she says. I'm fine, Catra always responds.
The brunette continues to humour her to keep the peace, only shutting down when her old job was mentioned. Catra doesn’t allow Adora back into her home again.
Sometimes they study together, but she can't concentrate when Adora wears her glasses. Her heart hurts, so she cradles her cheek and tries not to remember.
The hickey she had branded Adora's neck with had been covered with foundation until it faded away. None of her friends had teased her about it, so she clearly had not told a single soul what had happened.
Catra bites at the scab on her lip from where Adora’s teeth nicked her until it bleeds. She wants to apologize, but the words stick on her tongue and she can't bring herself to talk about that night.
Catra knew Adora was only here by her side to alleviate her guilt. Shame buries itself under her skin every time she's near her, like she was too embarrassed to even exist in the same space as Adora. She wants to disappear.
Exams are hard, and without an internet connection after the library closes at 6pm made it difficult to study. She tries to use the Mcdonald's wifi but soon just ordering a water cup wasn't enough for the workers to let her stay. It was a fruitless effort anyway, in her heart she knew she wasn't going to come out on top. Her ranking had slipped, she wasn't even at second place anymore. Rent was due at the end of the month, and without her Burger King wage she knew she'll be kicked out sooner than later.
Catra felt stressed and self destructive, and the only thing that kept her from falling off the edge completely was Scorpia. As much as she hated depending on others, she'd much rather her old coworker than Adora.
Her classmates seemed to like this new, muted down version of Catra who didn't argue and just stayed quiet most of the time. Fighting back was too difficult when all she wanted to do was blend into the wallpaper. All they talked about was where they were going for vacation after graduation, and Catra certainly had nothing to contribute to that conversation.
She felt like crying, all the time. It was agony, wanting to burst out into tears randomly while she sat wasting away in the student council room. Despite herself, she missed Burger King, and she just kept getting ghosted or rejected in her other job applications. Sometimes when she really wanted to indulge herself, she'd go cry silently in the school toilet stall.
Glimmer notices the change, and she catches her glaring. 'You don't seem as alive lately. Your eye bags are huge.'
'S'fine.' Catra replies, hiding her hands so she doesn't see how they shake. Honestly Catra couldn't remember the last time she slept.
'Pfft, don't lie to me. Adora's worried about you. You're getting skinnier, and your eyes are always raw. All you do is stare into space.'
Catra bites down on her nails. Of course she knew that. But she's gone through this before, and she'll do it again.
'What happened between you two?’
‘None of your business.’ Catra replies, shuffling her way to the hall.
--
Their graduation ceremony starts off uneventfully. Every student’s parents except Catra’s sit proudly in the audience, eager to watch their kid graduate. One by one they receive their certificate and return to their seats.
Adora and Catra stand side by side onstage, as Adora makes their final speech as School Captain. Through the blinding lights, she sees Angella waving proudly at her adoptive daughter in the crowd.
Catra looks at Adora in the corner of her eye. She must look pathetic, lovesick and pining after someone she couldn’t have.
‘It’s been such an honour serving the entire faculty and students of this school. I couldn’t have done it without my amazing Vice-Captain and all of my prefects.
Now I’m proud to hand over my badge to the next School Captain, Frosta.’
They go through the rest of the ceremony like that, each member of the student council handing their badges to their successors.
Soon their Principal comes up to the podium, tapping it once and clearing her throat.
‘Announcing our honor student, and the winner of the scholarship to Eternia University…’ Castaspella says, turning over the sign card.
‘None other than our school captain, Adora!’
Everyone starts clapping, and Adora walks across the stage to shake Castaspella's hand.
Sounded about right. Catra never won against Adora in her entire life. She had already expected this outcome. Like a game of cat and mouse, going over and over for all eternity.
Adora would excel with her elite education and secure a well paying job. Catra would struggle at the bottom indefinitely, never amounting to anything. She never would, if Adora was still there next to her. When the blonde re-entered her life, everything she had been working towards for years just collapsed. Her job, her home, her School Captain status, her chance at the scholarship, her sanity.
She had to be wiped clean. A fresh start.
The flower petals were falling, the streets decorated with a vibrant pink. The other students mill out of the crowd with their parents, chatting excitedly about what was next in their futures. She waits for Adora underneath a tree.
'Congratulations.' Catra says, when she finally spots the other girl in the crowd. Adora pulls away from Angella’s embrace to meet her.
'You deserve this so much more than I do.' Adora says, her voice pained like she didn't just win a full ride to her dream university. 'You should take it.'
'It's in your name, silly.' Catra replies, lightly tapping her with her rolled up certificate.
'Besides, I knew you'd get into Eternia, so I never applied.'
Adora blinks dumbly. '...What? Aren’t we going to the same university?’
She always was a bit slow on the uptake. ‘Only you decided that, stuupid. Say, it's about time we ended this right?'
‘Catra, what are you...'
'Our deal. You don't need to feel guilty anymore or bring me anything.' Catra says, her voice sounding like it didn't belong to her. She rummages in her bag, bringing out Adora's spare varsity jacket that she hadn’t returned. 'Here, take this. Thank you for all the help.'
'What do you mean? You want to stop being friends?' Adora says in disbelief, taking the jacket.
Catra nods. ‘I can’t continue with the arrangement. I hope you understand.’
‘I don’t! Was I the only one who thought we were friends, real ones?’ Adora asks.
‘...That’s right. I never saw you as a friend. You were just a meal ticket to me. Are you happy now?’ Catra snaps back. Shit, that wasn’t what she meant to say. She had planned to end this quickly and painlessly, on a high note. Trust Adora to put up a fight.
Something seems to click in Adora’s brain. ‘Is this about the night of the party?’
‘Figure that out yourself.’ Catra replies, turning to walk away.
Adora grabs onto her arm. ‘Wait! If- if that’s what you want, I’ll give it! Just don't go!'
This dumb blonde really was offering up her body, out of what? A sense of duty? How stupid.
‘Is that right?’ Catra says, walking closer to her. Adora backs up until she is pinned to the tree. They’re face to face now.
‘Can you really do this?’ Catra lifts Adora’s chin by a finger.
Finally it seems to dawn on Adora exactly what Catra wanted. She swallows, biting her lip.
There’s a flicker of hesitation, before Adora’s eyes squeeze shut defiantly. The blonde is shaking like a leaf, her breath coming out in panicked stutters from her pursed lips.
Catra just stares at Adora’s scrunched up face impassively. Her scared reaction was the only confirmation she needed for closure.
She flicks the other girl’s forehead, and her big blue eyes open in confusion.
‘Chill out, I’m not that evil to do it to someone so unwilling.’
Adora blinks, clutching her forehead. ‘Catra?’
Suddenly Angella’s voice cuts through their conversation from the car park. ‘Adora dear, are you done chatting with your friend? We have reservations!'
‘Um, I…’ Her old school captain opens her mouth to say something, but Angella's started to lose her patience. 'Adora, how long are you going to stand there? Glimmer is already waiting for us at the restaurant!'
Catra just smiles tiredly. ‘Take care, dummy.’
She watches Adora being dragged off unwillingly by her adoptive mother to the car.
Catra lets out a sigh. Her phone pings with a message from Scorpia, and she knows it's time to go.
---
By the time Angella releases her from their graduation celebration, Adora can feel that it's already too late.
Adora:
Please, can we talk? Let me fix this
A pop up appears over the screen.
Message Not Sent
This person isn't receiving messages at this time.
Adora sends another message, but they all go undelivered. Catra had blocked her again. Panic spikes through her veins, and she quickly dons on a jacket and grabs her car keys.
She sneaks out that night, down the familiar winding path through the bush that led to Catra's place.
'Catra?' She rolls up the garage door, blinking in the darkness. When her eyes adjusted, she found Catra's old home completely emptied.
All the furniture and items her friend had collected over the years, they were all gone. The little stove where they cooked, the old mattress where they talked late into the night, all vanished like they were never there.
A single green plastic bag remained on the floor untouched, filled to the brim of food.
I saw the max facts (pun intended 😂) you did for that question a while ago. So I was wondering if maybe you could tell us some more facts about Max it doesn’t have to be anything too detailed but anything you know would be nice to know, pretty please 😊
Okay... RANDOM FACTS ABOUT MAX - PART 2
I went on deep analysis mode this time to try and say all of Max's little nice and cute moments I know of.. Pls take notice, tho!! I'm not trying to flex or anything, I'm just a simple peasant girl on Maximilian's kingdom for a long time and it happens I have FBI blood in my veins 😭 so It's all gather on my brain and hard drive lol SO! I'm just answering this ask with a lot of thought and care so you can know more about Max and how he is even more awesome than you think!!! (And just in text form, cause Max doesn't need to be tagged on more personal stuff on IG (there’s too much illegal fishing at my tumblr pond already! 👏). It’s probably weird to know certain things, yes, but at least I'm respectful, I'll never bother him with this kind of stuff). Well, enjoy the bible below to end up knowing very little about him, still haha.. Just some more small facts.
- Max was at a barbecue just yesterday. It was someones birthday from the set of his new movie. He drank his beer, like usual, idk about the meat.. there was wurst and chicken.. I'm not sure if he's trying to be a vegetarian or not (after that thoughtful video he posted) 🤔.. maybe he didn't eat it, I don't know!!
- a little while before the start of this shooting, he was at the Baltic Sea filming for the series he's gonna be in (just one episode again! Don't get your hopes too high lol he's gonna be a security guard who disappears mysteriously, so....)
- He helped his friend renovate his house a few weeks ago!! How could I forget that on the first post.. Then, he had to go to Hesse for the movie shooting, and his friend had to call another friend to come help him lmao damn
I think I could describe some videos I have then... at least there's some cool and funny stuff. (Friends himself tagged in the past and cast friends)
- Max's dad went to the same uni as him. Also, he voiced a police officer on the phone in a short film Max wrote and directed all by himself (he didn't act on it, but he was also another police officer over the phone haha). Another thing, his dad made the official music for one of his plays.
- The falafel day.. his friend was taking a piss filming Max at the shop from afar and zooming in, saying "omg, guys! I found Noah from Dark! He's right there buying falafel" lmao, then, Max is just standing there looking all wonderful with his perfect hair and such, moving his hands, scratching his chin, ordering his food, and his friend talks some more, doing like a rough Max voice "yeah yeah, I'll have that one. Good, yeah". 😂
- the day he went to take a walk in nature. His friend asks him for a cigarette, he is denied, he goes to take it anyway, Max slams his cup of tea on the table and tries to take his cigarette back and it's all black and they're just laughing lmao (I love his laugh btw, so giggly!)
There was storys posted by Max himself.. so, maybe you saw it, but it's from before dark s3 came out.
- The pigeon storys. He filmed two pigeons chasing each other at the station, one always running from the other and he captioned "me trying to flirt" haha
- He screen recorded an ad for an app that deletes people from pictures and made some joke too, I can't remember exactly what he wrote, smt like "when you break up, but still wants to keep the picture" lol also, he unfollowed like 5 people that week after posting that... hm 👀
- he posted a video of him walking in the dark with really cold wind.. you can only see his hair flying around. Also, with a mask on, another chasing a cat in a big field, and that one drinking his coffee and eating his yogurt (you most likely saw it already)
- Ohh.. His friend was playing Max's drums the other day!!! Made a lot of jokes, it was obvious he was messing around in Max's room (maybe they live together, maybe he just waters the plants lol idk). Some of the jokes were "I've been playing this drums since 1921" and "the drums and me are a perfect pair, don't ever believe otherwise". I wonder what Max said to him.. he can't do anything about it, he's not in Berlin hahah. He has a little giraffe in his room, and other home decors (you can see it on his drumming video on his own IG)
- he likes to read on longer train rides.
- there's a video of him screaming inside a wardrobe after being jumped by a friend and one of him putting lipstick on with the song "I'm a sexy motherfucker" playing in the background hehe we was tagged, it was easy to find when there wasn't much tagged post.
- There's moments of ppl filming something/themselves and he just comes and photobombs it lol he is just like thiss 👏 showing his tongue and doing a funny face and such. One of those I saw it on the IG of a Das Boot cast member I actually already followed before.
- this group was such a blast. There's a few pictures, one of them he's in a dress, he has white stockings on til his thighs, heels and all haha lovely
- His improv-group.. he was almost in tears singing "I believe I can fly" with the group on their last day.. But he was happy! A mix of emotions. He loves everyone, he expresses his love a lot to people in general, he says it and adds heart emojis to make sure haha you can see his comments going on IG of his cast friends, especially from Das Boot (I followed a lot of the guys). So, about always commenting something funny on people's posts.. I didn't saved those, so I forgot most of it, but one I remember was that someone posted a video of a hailstorm and he was like "what are u doing, free ice!! Go grab them" hahaha
- Max has that Noah picture where he's peaking by a wall (you know that one Baran posted) printed and framed! 👏
- Things he’s pretty much always with: his backpack and his big headphones (it's always on his neck. At almost every picture, from every year, with different people etc. I was confused when he had normal headphones at his farm storys. Maybe he forgot them in Berlin 😭. Besides those, his rings, necklaces and bracelets (always, for years and years! Same ones, even). He uses frequently on premieres, as I saw it. Sometimes they also show up on his characters in his one-episode works!! Hahah is so nice when that happens. You can notice this on my screencaps.
- that pic of him that is everywhere now (with glasses, holding a bottle of champagne), I posted that months ago.. There's 2 more pics and 1 video. One pic, he is pretending the automatic lighter that's on the table is a Harry Potter wand (but I think I cropped the table, right.. I can't remember). This was actually posted by Max himself and he tagged his friend who took it. I went to see if they posted smt and there was a picture where he is literally biting the cork of that bottle off with his teeth Lmaoo, and one video.. he is talking on the phone trying to block the view with his feet.. this man!!
- he really doesn't care about buying too much unnecessary clothes and shoes and stuff. He is mindful of his things and the environment!!
- there's a video of him on the set of Der Zauberlehrling, I need to recall where I got that from (maybe I could share this one. I'm not sure), he is messing with the broom and someone asks him "hey Max, what's that animal?" and points to the fluffy microphone. He says "it's a fucked up coala bear" (in english) 😂
Again.. I can't say names or anything, cause ppl are not mindful! Like.. I know I'm probably weird, but only for myself and my FBI office LOL I don't go over there and follow/reply to all these people’s posts and storys or take their videos and tag Max on them, this is just not.... nah. I'll always be respectful (yeah, some older stuff has gifs, cause he had like 10k followers, and 5 fans on tumblr lol But i never sent/tag him in anything personal directly.. that’s why i only posted on tumblr for the past year, in fact! I never thought things would be the way they are now a year later.. so, newer stuff it's not posted/gif nor ever will). I don't want him to be weirded out and like, disappear from IG!! I think about these things.. when people are being weird and stuff towards him. I don’t know how ppl don’t think about this when tagging him recklessly in random pictures and videos!!!
I wish he had more interviews, so we could know more proper stuff about him. (The few interviews he has are translated on my IG highlight. There's still an 8min interview missing there, cause I'm contemplating about being more of a bother to german speaking people, since I only have basic german..
50 Sim OC Questions
I was tagged for this ages ago, don’t remember by whom, and found this in my drafts. I normally don’t do tags, but I like this one because it is about my Sim and not about me.
Questions and answers under the break, because long.
Sims's Name: Cassandra Shurtugal 1 How old is your sim? About halfway through Adult 2 When is your sim's birthday? Last day of the first Lunar cycle of Spring. 3 What is your sim's zodiac sign? Aries 4 What is your sim's ethnicity? Human (i.e. no occult state) 5 Does your sim have any nicknames? Cassie 6 Do they have a job? If so what is it? She is a Home Manager (SAHM). With fibromyalgia and two special needs children that's as much as she can manage. 7 Where does your sim live? Once I finish it she will live in New Sunset Valley, somewhere on New Sunset Boulevard. 8 Who does your sim live with? Her children Bris and Saphy, cat Moos and wombat Punky. Saphy also wants a dog but she hasn't decided on a breed yet. 9 What environment did your sim grow up in? (strict, loving, cold etc.) Her father went by the then common rule that the husband provides the income and the wife takes care of the children, so he was never really present in her life. Her mother was a very perfectionistic and demanding SAHM, no matter how hard Cassie tried nothing was ever good enough. It took a lot of work and some very good friends to make her realise as a YA that she is in fact very smart and very good at a lot of things. 10 What are your sim's favorite foods? She loves anything spicy, but also has a sweet tooth. 11 What is your sim's favorite drink? Water, hot chocolate when it's cold, when it's warm a glass of dry white wine. 12 If they have one what is your sim's favorite color? Turquoise 13 Does your sim believe in any cliches? She does have some good online friends though. 21 What was your sim's favorite school subject? History 22 Is/was your sim a high, mid or low achiever in school? Very much a high achiever. 23 Are they planning to go or have they already been to college? If so what would be or what was their major? No she hasn't, and given her age and lack of career she isn't going to. She does like taking evening classes at Community College though (using the Evening School mod) If she had gone to college she would have majored in Communications or Fine Art. 24 What are your sims political beliefs? (if they have them) She has been reading Michael Waters' articles for years and is a staunch supporter of Casanova Masters. 25 What is one thing your sim wants to do before they die? Visit @nilxis‘ Uranesia. 26 Does your sim have a favorite tv show (cable) and/or movie? She doesn't watch much tv, mainly sports (cycling, swimming, winter sports), and she watches anime (Japanese cartoons) with her kids. 27 Is your sim a Netflix viewer? If so what are their top 3 shows. No, she has better uses for her money. 28 Does your sim like books? If so what's their favorite one? She loves to read, mainly fantasy, but also non-fiction. 29 Does your sim enjoy video games, if so what is their favorite one and do they play on pc or console? When she grew up pc's didn't exist yet, and she's never been into consoles. She started playing pc games as a young adult, mainly simulation games (SimCity Classic anyone?) She also plays some MMO's with her kids, notably World of Simcraft. 30 What is your sim's personal style? Classic but cute. She has neither the age nor the body shape for shorts, mini skirts and crop tops, but she loves animal and anime prints. 31 Does your sim have a lucky charm? No she doesn't. 32 Is your sim religious? I don't have religion in my game, though there is a sort of cultural reverence for Mother Earth as the source of all life. 33 What kind of music does your sim listen to and who is their favorite artist? She likes just about anything from classic to hardrock, but she usually leaves it to the kids to pick the background music playing in the house. 34 Is your sim a festive person? If so what's their favorite holiday? She loves holidays, especially Christmas. 35 What is your sim's favorite type of weather? Warm with lots of sunshine. 36 Does your sim prefer to start fights or finish them? She tends to walk away from fights, she absolutely hates them. 37 Does your sim have a dream job? No, she has never been into the whole career thing, and has never wanted anything more than to raise her children well. 38 Does your sim have any siblings? An older brother, but he emigrated decades ago and they have lost touch. 39 Does your sim get along with their family? She doesn't have any family besides her kids, with whom she gets along pretty well. 40 What is your sims favorite hobby? Reading and computer games. 41 What does your sim look for in a romantic partner? Nothing, she is happily single. 42 What is a secret about your sim? If I told you it wouldn't be a secret. 43 What is a wish your sim has? Learn to paint, and learn to play the guitar. 44 What is a flaw your sim has? She can be short-tempered, especially when she is tired. Which happens a lot because of her fibromyalgia. 45 How do others generally perceive your sim? I don't know, you would have to ask them. 46 Does your sim have a greatest achievement? If so what is it? Maxing her Cooking skill? She doesn't really have any big achievements, just lots of small ones. 47 If they have one, what is your sim's greatest regret? Staying in, and exposing her kids to, a toxic relationship for far too long, instead of getting a divorce years earlier. 48 Does your sim have a favorite emoji? xD 49 Does your sim use simstagram? No she doesn't. 50 What is the last text your sim sent (and who did they text)? Probably something practical about one of the kids, to her ex-husband.
Not tagging anyone because this is old, but feel free to do it anyway if you like it and haven’t already.
Digging Deeper
Thanks @alienfuckeronmain for the tag, this I’ve loved reading everyone’s, and I tag @taintedlav @rahashirley @raisemybody @twopoppies @cuethetommo @metal-eye and @seasurfacefullofclouds1 if anyone wants to play!!
1. Do you prefer writing with a black pen or blue pen? ink color matters less than ball-point-ness...
2. Would you prefer to live in the country or city? I want a witch’s cottage with a giant messy garden on the edge of the moors and a forest a million miles away from everyone. So country.
3. If you could learn a new skill what would it be? I’ve actually stretched myself this summer! Am learning French and guitar, and idk if it counts but learning my new job which I NEVER thought I could handle lol since I’ve never worked retail
4. Do you drink your tea/coffee with sugar? Honey ;)
5. What was your favourite book as a child? Well I have to say Narnia and Redwall, but when I was very tiny I loved this book about a girls who could whistle and speak to animals (named Mable) and the Velveteen Rabbit, and a book called “The Lost Princess” which is fucking amazing, by the precursor to CS Lewis, George MacDonald
6. Do you prefer baths or showers? I usually take showers because baths take too much time. Also baths are romantic and that makes me sad, and also I have to look at my body which, ug, not prepared to do that all the time rip
7. If you could be a mythical creature, which one would it be? Mer. Fucking. Maid. Though I’ve always wanted to fly too, I used to spend HOURS in the water just underwater swimming with my legs stuck together just pretending to be on ocean adventures
8. Paper or electronic books? I usually much prefer paper, but since I got these blue light blocking glasses I am finding i’m fine either way physically. Soul-wise though, yeah, paper
9. What is your favourite item of clothing? Probably my mango colored crop hoodie that I once smashed melting frozen blueberries on and then spent hours and days getting the stains out...
10. Do you like your name or would you like to change it? My real name is super boring and typical, though I do like it. I enjoy my tumblr name a lot, Toni, and it feels more genderless and constrictive than my actual name lol
11. Who is a mentor to you? I’ve had so many great teachers, but the biggest lesson I’ve learned in life is that so many you admire can be deeply flawed. I have lots of trust issues. I only take advice from a select few people, and they don’t include anyone ‘old and wise’ lol
12. Would you like to be famous and if so, what for? Oh for sure, I used to want to be an actress or a rock star or whatever. Famous author. I would fucking LOVE to have a platform and help people and cheer people up and see people grocery shopping and have instant friends. I know that sounds terribly naive but I’ve said before I share a lot of Harry’s personality, and I just love flirting with people and smiling with them and giving hugs. Now, I would want to be famous as TONI me and not real me, because then I could never be myself because my fam would find out rip
16. Who do you want to be closer to? I’m working on getting to know my amazing sister better, and that’s been lovely.
17. Do you miss someone at the moment? All my friends have been long distance for actual years, so i don’t miss anymore more than normal. I am missing just... the POTENTIAL for someone. This indefinite distancing is wearing on me.
18. Tell us about an early childhood memory. I was like two or three, and we were out on a full moon walk and I was in my stroller in the red sheepskin bundled up, and I remember coming up our sidewalk and looking at the world and moon and thinking, “remember this moment, or you’re going to grow up and forget how wonderful it was.” Also when I was five I had a breakdown on my mom’s lap because “I’m going to grow up and be too big to be sung lullabies to!” and I didn’t want anything to change EVER
19. What is the strangest thing you have eaten? I used to make a concoction of rye crackers, mustard, and pickles. Don’t ask
20. What are you most thankful for? all the opportunities I’ve had in life. I’m so massively privileged
22. Have you ever met someone famous? I saw a few celebs in NYC, Shosh from Girls, the guy from Monk, Tim Gun, John Oliver (and his golden retriever) and I passed a drunk as a skin Alec Baldwin outside Lincoln Center one day. Probably other people I didn’t recognize. Oh and S**** M***** rented my instrument right before covid hit here, and drunk him (or high him) couldn’t believe he had a h*** to play around on, and then I saw him staring at mountains being the most stereotypical rich white boy ever, also he did not send out gay vibes but don’t let that stop your Shiall, please don’t let it
23. Do you do you keep a diary or journal? I almost always start with the new year and do like. A day. And then forget.
24. Do you prefer to use a pen or a pencil? PEN
Tumblr media
It was just supposed to be a workout.
A Mayans based Story Adult Content
Master List
Chapter Nine
 “Are you going out like that?” Bishop asks as I bend down to tie my sneakers. I look down at myself wearing yoga pants and a crop top and hop up on the stool.
“Yeah, just going to the yard to work out with Gilly,” I give him a confused look. “What’s wrong with what I’m wearing? Do I need to change?”
“Are you comfortable, querida?” he sets a cup of coffee in front of me as he goes back to the stove to fry bacon. I nod. “Don’t change. You wearing that is just gonna make it hard for anyone to get any work done.”
“Stop,” I chuckle as I take a sip from my cup, “No one but you looks at me like that.”
“Everyone looks at you like that,” he responds. “They don’t act on it because you’re my queen.”
“Your queen?” I quirk a brow, slipping from the stool to make toast. I could successfully make toast without burning it.  That’s still cooking, right?
“I’d never call you my ol’ lady,” he places the cooked bacon on plates and we sit together at his kitchen bar, “at least not to your face.”
“That makes you a very smart man,” I peck his cheek, “Another reason I love you.”
“No, it’s cause without me you’d starve,” he says back, giving my thigh a gentle squeeze.
“That too,” I slide my arms around his neck from behind and give him another kiss before taking a piece of bacon from his plate. “I gotta meet Gilly in fifteen, see you at the yard?”
“I don’t like the idea of you going out alone,” Bishop’s word’s stern.
“It’s fifteen minutes.  Straight there, no detours, I promise,” I say. “You’ve still got to get showered and dressed.”
“I still don’t fucking like it,” he stated. “That shithead is still out there.”
“I know that more than anyone,” I grab my keys from the table by the door, “I can’t be watched twenty-four/seven. Yesterday I had to stop Coco from coming in the ladies’ room with me at work.”
“Alright,” he agrees reluctantly, “text me when you get there.”
As promised in fifteen minutes I shift my SUV into park and type out a text:
"Now I'm thinking about you naked in the shower alone," I smirk and hit send.
"That's not what I meant when I said text me. I've already got your ass in those pants on my mind. Be good. See you soon," he sent back.
I send him a wink and a heart emoji then step out of my SUV. I give Chucky a wave as I cross the yard to the cage.
"You ready, hermana?" Coco greats me.  He takes in my confused look. "Gilly is late. Asked me to get you started."
“OK,” I drop my duffle by the gate mentally preparing myself for my lesson.
“I was thinking,” he said, “you’re little, right? There’s no fucking way you can take down a huge guy by yourself.”
“You and Bishop aren’t exactly huge and you hold your own,” I state.
“Si, but we’ve been training for fucking ever.  Our fucking life made it where we had to from the fucking womb,” he said. “And we don’t have that kind of time. Imma teach you something that will fucking keep you breathing. And put the other asshole in the fucking ground.”
I nod listening to him. I knew at my core he was right. There was no way a few days of learning how to kick or punch would stop Warren or any one of his men from doing whatever they wanted to me.  I could slow them down but just enough to piss them off. And then I’d still be running and hiding. Coco’s way was a permanent solution.
“Take this,” he pulls his piece from the pocket of his kutte. “You ever shoot before?”
“I used go skeet shooting with my dad,” I hold the 9mm pistol in my hand studying its weight, “Nothing like this.”
“The fuck is a skeet?” Coco asks.
“Clay target flung in the air. I was pretty good,” I curl my fingers around the butt of the gun letting testing how it feels.
“Rich white people making up shit to shoot at,”  he snorts a laugh, “that,” he motions to the piece in my hand, “you use that to put down a guy. Nothing fake about killing a man. You do what you gotta hermana. The rest of the bullshit fades away.”
I nod, “I get it. We’re not that much different. Life may have fucked us in different ways but we both got fucked. And now we’re here. You’re teaching me how to keep from getting fucked again. That’s something.”
For the next couple of hours, Coco taught me to hold the gun, aim, and shoot. Gilly arrived and showed me the best ways to take a guy down unexpected. Side and groin being the best targets.  Kicks would be far more impactful than a fist.  My legs are stronger than my arms.
I move into the shade and take a drink from my water bottle and reapply sunscreen. Getting a sideways look from the guys. “Not all of us are blessed with caramel skin. Y’all should wear it too, melanoma is a bitch.”
“Take your fair skin inside,” Gilly laughed tossing a sweaty towel at me. I wrinkle my nose and toss it back at him.
I close my eyes, feeling the cool air hit my skin when I walk in the clubhouse. I didn't realize how hot it was outside until I savored the air-conditioned room. I reach my arms up in the air to stretch and then bend down and lift my foot to stretch the backs of my legs. I was a little sore. But nothing a few stretches couldn’t fix.
"Fuck," I hear Bishop mutter behind me, "you are making it really fucking hard to concentrate."
I glance back at him over my shoulder seeing that he’s clearly checking out my ass from his table with Taza and Hank, “I am not doing anything.” My lips tug into a slight smirk as I stand. I rather enjoyed the way he was looking at me.
“You are doing plenty, querida,” he says back. “Come sit.” I give a gentle kiss to his lips before taking the seat beside his.
“I didn’t mean to distract you,” I move my gaze between the men.
“It is a welcome one, sweetheart,” Taza says. “Beer?” I shake my head, “Too early for me. I’ll take a Diet Coke if you’ve got one.”
“Just regular,” he responds grabbing a can from the fridge. “I’ll put it on the list for the Prospect.”
“You don’t have to do that,” I open the can and take a sip.
“You’re here almost as much as we are,” he states, “It’s not a big deal.”
I nod realizing just how much I was here. If I wasn’t hanging out with Bishop after a table meeting I was helping Chuckie with the yard books. Or EZ clean. I wasn’t privy to all the details that happened on the other side of the stained glass door. But I knew enough.
“It doesn’t bother you that I’m here so much?”
“Na, you class up the joint,” Hank responds. I shake my help with a smile. I knew he was flattering me. It was nice to have people.  For so long Warren kept me from people. I was isolated. And now I had freedom. I could be fully myself. And I couldn’t thank Bishop enough for that.
My thoughts are interrupted by a bang and a loud crash from outside. Without another thought, the four of us push out of the clubhouse door. The noise was coming from the garage.
“Mother fucker,” Angel lies on the garage floor as Coco and Gilly lift the bike off of him. I rush back to my SUV and grab my medical bag. I couldn’t stand idly by since there was something I can do to help. I drop to my knees beside him. My eyes quickly scanning over him and I shine a light in his eyes. Watching his eyes dilate.
“Doesn’t appear to be any brain damage,” I give him a slight smile, “well not much.” His pulse was racing, his breathing was labored. “Look at me, Angel. You’ve got to stay calm.” My hand moves along his side and find a screwdriver lodged in his side.
“Fuck calm,” he grunts as he starts to get up. I shove him back, “Be still you moron.” I hold the screwdriver steady keeping the blood from gushing more. “You have a dislocated shoulder on top of a puncture in your side. It’s in there pretty deep. We really need to get you to the hospital.”
“Just yank it out, Malibu. Give me a bandaid and a beer,” he groans.
“And have you bleed all over my shoes, no fucking way,” I responded. “You don’t have to act all macho.  I know it hurts like hell.” I glance back as the guys surround me in a semicircle, waiting for instructions.  I lock my gaze with Bishop’s, “Bring my SUV over and put the back seats down. I can’t fix this here.  And I don’t want you dragging him through a dark, dirty tunnel.”
We hadn’t talked about what happens on the other side of the border, but I knew.  Not everything but enough. Some of the shit that happened they couldn’t explain in a traditional hospital. But Angel is legal and he fell in the garage.
“Get him in the back,” I keep pressure on his side as Gilly and Riz hoist him up. I climb in as they load him through the hatch. I look down with a half-smile, trying to keep calm. But he was weak and the color was fading from his face. I meet Bishop’s eyes in the rearview and give a nod. “Hurry.”
It felt like an eternity as we drove the few miles from the scrap yard to Santo Padre Memorial Hospital.  I had the ER on the phone and they were ready as my SUV pulled into the ambulance bay. The hatch opens and the ER doctors help unload him onto a gurney.  I was so focused on keeping my hand pressed to Angel’s side I barely heard the doctors and nurses telling me they got it.
“You can’t come back here, Nova. Now let us work,” Dr. Ramos says as she takes over keeping the pressure on the wound. The warmth of his blood flowed through my fingers as I let go. They wheel him through the double doors.  I stop and stare after them relaxing only after I feel Bishop’s hands on my shoulders.
“Did someone call EZ or their father?” I wipe my hand across my face as I’m lead to the waiting room.
“They’re on the way,” Hank says and hands me a rag to wipe the blood from my hands and face.
“Thanks,” I slide my arms into the dark hoodie that Bishop offered then take a seat beside him.  I didn’t realize how much blood and grease was on my body until I slide the zipper up. I didn’t care how shitty I looked at the moment.  My eyes bounce from the nurses' station to the door watching as Felipe Reyes walks through the automatic doors. He’s met instantly by Taza and Riz. They explain how the bike fell from the lift and fell on top of him.
I stand up when Ramos comes from the back.  I relax reading her expression.  I knew Angel would be OK before she spoke. He needed fluid antibiotics overnight and he would get to leave in the morning.  Take it easy for a few weeks.  EZ and Felipe are lead to the back to see Angel.
“Take me home?” I slip my arms around Bishop’s waist.
“Of course, querida,” his arms around my shoulders as he leads me out of the hospital and to my SUV.  I walked straight from the car through the house and into the bathroom. Bishop helps me strip my clothes from my body.  It wasn’t seductive, it was comforting.  I let him take care of me. He followed me into the shower.  The blood and grime rinse from my body and swirl down the drain. He scrubs my hair and body clean.
I settle with my head resting on his chest in my bed. We lay there quietly as he rubs my shoulder lightly with his thumb. The day had everything. Joy and Fear. I know above anything, that here is where I belong. I just say simply, “I love you.” Before closing my eyes.
Dig a little deeper
Thanks for tagging me @satans-helper!
Do you prefer writing with black or blue pen? Black all the way.
Would you prefer to live in the country or the city? Country. My favorite place to be is in the middle of nowhere. I’ll never forget the weekend I spent helping one of my friends with her horses. Her barn is very remote, and when we came back from dinner in town and I looked up at the sky, the view that I had of the stars knocked the breath out of me.
If you could learn a new skill, what would it be?
I would absolutely love to learn how to play guitar. I’ve tried so many times and I just can’t pick it up.
Do you drink your tea/coffee with sugar? Nope.
What was your favorite book as a child? I will forever and always have a deep love and appreciation for everything the Percy Jackson books did for me.
Do you prefer baths or showers? Showers. Bath water doesn’t stay warm long enough and sitting in lukewarm water just doesn’t appeal to me. In the shower, I can just keep turning it up until I melt.
If you could be a mythical creature, which one would you be? I wouldn’t mind being a water nymph. It’d be very peaceful, I think.
Paper or electronic books? Paper!!!
What is your favorite item of clothing? I recently cut up a t-shirt of mine that was too big to wear; I turned it into a crop top and now it’s my favorite. I also have a white linen button down with thin gray stripes on it that I’m in love with.
Do you like your name? Yes.
Who is a mentor to you? There’s a very famous American show jumper by the name of Elizabeth “Beezie” Madden. She’s an incredible rider with a tremendous amount of accolades, but she also treats her horses and employees with great care and respect. Unfortunately, there aren’t many other top show jumpers I can say the same about.
Would you like to be famous? Not really. The only reason I’d want to have a platform of any kind is so I could use it to help others and make change in the world.
Are you a restless sleeper? Not really, but I do sometimes have trouble sleeping through the night.
Do you consider yourself to be a romantic person? A little bit.
Which element best represents you? Air.
Who do you want to be closer to? My coworkers. When you work for a competition barn, you spend most of your time traveling around the country with clients’ horses and showing them. Considering that we spend so much time on the road together, you’d think that we’d all be closer, but it just hasn’t clicked yet.
Do you miss someone at the moment? Yeah. But it’s hard to explain.
Tell us about an early childhood memory. I have a very vivid memory of when my mom asked me if I wanted to try riding lessons. It was the beginning of something that would become the most important part of my life.
What is the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten? It wasn’t strange really, but just kind of funny. When I was in China a few summers ago I ate cantaloupe off a stick from a street vendor. I feel like that’s not normally something you’d buy and eat from a street vendor, but it was absolutely delicious.
What are you most thankful for? My own inner strength.
Have you ever met anyone famous? No.
Do you keep a diary or journal? Yes, but I only write in it when I feel like it. I don’t do it daily or anything.
Do you prefer to use pen or pencil? Pen.
What’s your star sign? Libra sun.
Do you like your cereal crunchy or soggy? Crunchy. I don’t ever put very much milk on it. I just like a little bit.
What would you want your legacy to be? I want to be remembered as someone that was always trustworthy, hardworking, and kind.
Do you like reading? What was the last book you read? I do, but it’s gotten harder for me as my life has gotten busier. I just read The Prophet by Khalil Gibran. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
How do you show someone you love them? I stand by them. Whatever they need, I’m there.
Do you like ice in your drinks? Yes!
What are you afraid of? Anything bad happening to my animals or loved ones. I would rather die than see any of them in pain.
What is your favorite scent? The smell of summer horse shows. Horses, hay, sweat, grass, hoof polish, leather, saddle soap. It’s lovely. I also really love the smell of record stores.
Do you address older people by their name or surname? It depends on who the person is and what my relationship is with them.
If money was not a factor, how would your life? Not in Ohio!
Do you prefer swimming in pools or the ocean? I like them both, but if the ocean waves are big, it scares me. I almost drowned in them when I was a kid.
What would you do if you found $50 on the ground? Unless I know who it belongs to, I’m keeping it.
Have you ever seen a shooting star? No, I really want to.
What is one thing you’d want to teach your children? To be kind to everyone, but also to stick up for themselves and those that are less fortunate.
If you had to get a tattoo right now, what and where would it be? 93 is a very important number to me. So probably that, and somewhere easy to conceal...inside of my wrist.
What can you hear now? Birds chirping as the sun goes down. It’s lovely.
Where do you feel the safest? In the middle of the woods, in the middle of nowhere.
What is one thing you want to overcome/conquer?
I was in a bad riding accident years ago and the PTSD from it compromises my ability to ride today. I’m fine 90% of the time, but it comes back to me in the worst moments and it’s exhausting trying to do my job while dealing with it. If I could completely erase the memory of it from my mind, I would.
If you could travel back to any era in time, what would it be? The 70s!
What is your most used emoji? ❤️
Describe yourself using one word. Strong.
What do you regret most? “There’s nothing that I’d take back, but it’s hard to say there’s nothing I regret.”
Last movie you saw? I’m so bad at watching movies 🙄. I rewatched Ford vs. Ferrari a little while ago. It’s a good one.
Last TV show you watched? ATLA!!!
Invent a word and it’s meaning. I can’t think of what it would be, but I wish I had a word specifically for the frustration I feel when I’m trying to share genuine emotion with someone and they’re just too shallow to grasp what I’m trying to communicate.
Hisoka x Illumi Hunter Exam pt.1
The only thing Hisoka loved more than hot showers was writing for his travel blog. But when he found that the places he wanted to visit were restricted, he decided to enroll in the hunter exam. Will Hisoka be able to pull through with the help of his new (and dreamy) friend, Illumi?
Hisoka woke up on the day of the exam feeling excited. As he breathed in the fresh morning air, his mind was alight with the possibilities this new certification could bring him. This morning, though it was the beginning to a bid day, started no different than any other morning: with the blog.
“Zaban City- your complete guide to the city of aspiring hunters,” he started to write. Aspiring hunters... Just the idea excited him, and made him giddy. Too nervous to work longer than that, he got up, took a shower, and put on his favorite outfit: Harlequin leggings, a white crop top with the four card suits on it, black platform boots, and his gold star earrings. To top it all off, he drew a pink star under his left eye, and a blue water drop under is right.
Perfect. Now that the look was done, it was time for breakfast. He thought about what he should pack... A change of clothes for sure... How long was this exam, anyway? Just as he was finishing his favorite breakfast, Froot Loops with almond milk, he got a text.
“Wishing you luck! I hope you have lots of fun! We miss you!! -Chrollo”
Hisoka couldn’t stop the rush to his stomach. The last big city he wrote about was Meteor City, a place he never wanted to go back to. But while he was there, he met a tight-knit yoga group that called themselves the spiders, presumably because they could stretch really far with their long legs. Hisoka made sure to tell them that he wasn’t too into yoga, but they let him in anyway, as Chrollo, the leader, clicked with him right away. Although, after missing a couple of meetings, Hisoka got the feeling that maybe the rest of the group didn’t like his spontaneous, fun style. Still, Chrollo and him kept in contact, and had become quite close, even over the distance.
“Thanks babes! I can’t wait to show you my new, shiny licence”
But before sending the text, Hisoka added his signature heart emoji, but this time in red. He didn’t know if it was the excitement of the morning, but he was feeling flirty, and the sole recipient of this frisky attitude at the moment was Chrollo.
Hisoka always added a little flare, and that was what Chrollo liked about him. Chrollo was a shy, bookish sort, and Hisoka was confident, brilliant, and so very metropolitan.
With his correspondence with Chrollo established, and his things packed, Hisoka left his small Zaban City hotel room for the Hunters Exam. As he was leaving the lobby, though, a delicious smell from the restaurant next door greeted him. Well... Maybe I could just indulge a little... and besides, I could give this place some exposure on my blog.
Ever the critic, Hisoka found it best to experience the food and service of a restaurant from a quiet and undisturbed portion of the establishment, so he always made sure to ask for a private room, if they had one. He walked in, ordered and noodle bowl with medium rare beef, and was surprised at how quickly he was ushered into a delightfully decorated little room with a big table.
This place seems super promising, he said to himself. Then, all of the sudden, what felt like an earthquake started to occur... well, no it couldn’t be an earthquake, but it felt so strange... as if the room itself was an elevator. He uncrossed his legs and immediately shot up from his seat and tried to open the door, but it was sealed shut and wouldn’t slide. It was then that he noticed that the table was bolted to the floor, which confirmed that this room was meant to move.
Hisoka was angry and annoyed that the server didn’t warn him that this was only an elevator leading to the real room. He was also wondering how much time it would take for them to get there to serve him, as he had somewhere he needed to be.
When the door opened, Hisoka was feeling very cross, so his arms were folded and his toe was pointed. What he saw next, he was not expecting.
An underground chamber full of chattering people, all wearing numbered badges. As a little green man walked up to him, Hisoka considered that he maybe wasn’t in a restaurant after all.
“Welcome to the Hunter’s Exam! Your number will be 44. Feel free to mingle until about noon, when we will be starting the exam. Good luck!”
Embarrassed yet impressed with his instincts, Hisoka took the badge with his number on it, and sat down to write in his notepad. He didn’t want to bring his precious computer, so paper and pen would have to do. After a couple of minutes, he looked up from his notes to see that the room was now filled with a lot more people, one of which was walking right towards him.
A short, fat man with a five-o-clock shadow and a rectangular nose was making his way towards Hisoka with a can of juice in his hand.
“Hello. Is this your first time taking the exam?” Said the man, whose number was 16.
“Yes.” Said Hisoka, not interested in entertaining someone who looked like that.
“My name’s Tonpa, nice to meet you! Would you like some juice?”
“No thanks, I don’t drink anything but water and coffee,” Hisoka responded.
“Suit yourself,” said Tonpa, who looked upset.
As he was walking away, a man nearby, who had been watching the exchange, came over and sat next to Hisoka.
“You have quite keen instincts. What is your name?” Said the man, whose 301 badge was now clearly in view.
“Hisoka; charmed” He replied, outstretching his hand towards the stranger, being sure to show off both his manicure and his jewelry.
When the stranger looked back at Hisoka’s ivory, outstretched hand, Hisoka got a good look at him. His eyes were massive and luminous; very dark and not very expressive. His jet-black hair was down to his elbows, and looked so smooth and strong that someone could pull taffy on top of it and it wouldn't be damaged. But more than anything else, Hisoka noticed this beautiful stranger’s dead-pan expression. Had this man shaken his hand as he was invited to, Hisoka would’ve been uninterested; But instead, the man ignored his hand and continued asking questions. Oh no, Hisoka thought, He’s exactly my type!
“...could you let me know?”
“Pardon?” gasped Hisoka, who had been daydreaming instead of listening.
“I told you that I’m looking for a boy who’s about twelve years old and has white hair and a skateboard. If you see him, could you point him out?” Repeated the man, seemingly unbothered by having to repeat himself.
“That depends,” purred Hisoka “who would I be reporting to?”
“Me. Perhaps I misjudged your ability to aid me..” replied the man, expression still unchanged.
“No, I just meant that I don’t know your name” said Hisoka, whose attempt at flirting had gotten confused for stupidity.
“My name is Illumi. What’s your phone number?”
Baffled at how quickly things were going between the two, Hisoka marveled at how straightforward Illumi was... how adorable. Hisoka loved a man who wasn’t concerned with self awareness. Biting his lip, Hisoka put his number into Illumi’s phone. Handing it back, Hisoka jested “Now I hope you know how hurt I get when I wait up for a call that doesn’t come.”
Seemingly ignoring Hisoka’s banter again, Illumi started to get up.
“Well, I won’t be too upset!” Hisoka tried desperately to keep him there, but Illumi was blended in with the crowd in a blink of an eye.
Still my beating heart, thought Hisoka, as he licked his lips and squinted his eyes. With a Man like that walking around, I need to be careful not to lose sight of what I’m here for.
Protests and how to stay safe.
This doesn’t fit with my blog but I don’t care, it’s important so listen up.
I should start off by saying I’m a white Canadian, so I don’t have all the facts, but we do have police brutality and we do have systemic racism.
I’m not here to repeat all the shit we already know, the police are awful, and the system is unjust, we know that already. I’m here to tell ya’ll how to stay as safe as possible at the protests. This is long, buckle up.
If you have any questions or something I should add send an ask!
First things first, if you live somewhere where riots are likely to break out, or already have, DON’T BRING YOUR KIDS. they will get hurt. I’m talking small kids here. Older teens 16-19 ya’ll are good. (just if you’re a minor tell your parents ofc
What do I wear?
You don’t wan’t to wear form fitting clothing, but don’t wear things that are super baggy, Wear full sleeves and pants to protect against smoke and gas. Make sure you can run because you might need to.
All black, Make sure if your shirt has logos it’s worn inside out. you want to look as unidentifiable as possible.
Cover any tattoos, scars, and obvious birthmarks, take out piercings, if you have dyed hair, don’t let it be seen.
Boots or sneakers, If you’re wearing combat boots please for the love of god follow lace code. Make sure you can run, and that you’ll be comfortable.
Face protection, Goggles, masks, whatever you have. In a pinch you can make a shirt into a full face covering this also helps you be harder to identify
DON’T WEAR THINGS YOU ALWAYS WEAR. it only takes one person to point out a battle vest for you to get arrested.
What do I bring?
A backpack, Fill it with the following.
Water, two bottles, make sure they have squeeze tops. you can also bring Gatorade.
Snacks, protein bars and high energy snacks (nuts, dried fruit, trail mix). You don’t want to faint.
Prescription meds, take a few days extra of any daily meds, or inhaler refills.
A med kit, any basic one will do. or you can make your own by throwing  bandages, alcohol wipes, and gauze into a zip lock bag, throw a bandanna or a rag soaked in vinegar into a different zip lock bag in case you get pepper sprayed.
Your cellphone, if you can’t get a burner. Close all running apps and make sure it’s fully charged. Here is a guide on precautions you should take
Backup charger and cords.
A sharpie and a small notebook, this is used to take down badge numbers and any other important info. Write down important numbers in it, (lawyer, public defender, emergency contact, number of a friend on the outside.)
What else should I know?
No one gets left behind, protect each other. If you’re white stand in between cops and POC, you are less likely to get shot.
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS, these are different everywhere so google them!
Learn how to rinse your eyes, go from the inner corners outwards, a water and baking soda mix helps with peppers pray.
If you bring a sign, don’t take pictures of it and do not bring it home with you.
If you take pictures, don’t show the protesters faces, put emojis or just crop them out entirely. report photos showing their faces, it puts them in danger.
If you carry a large sign you will stand out on cameras, it will make you easier to target for after protest arrests.
If you are white do not speak over POC, their voices are important, listen to what they have to say.
In the case of looting, don’t go for family owned businesses, big corporations are fair game. they can recover, and they usually donate to police soooo.
Keep in touch with a friend who isn’t at the protest, update them with your location every hour or so. If you go missing, they’ll know what hospitals or centers to call.
Know your escape route, make note of police blockades. If shit goes bad you need to know where to go.
For the love of fuck turn off your cellular data, and your location. Your safety is more important than some snapchat video. you can always post those later, your location and your data can be used to track you at the protest.
If a white man is starting fires, shooting guns, or just inciting violence, he is probably an undercover cop trying to start a riot. Ignore him.
Police are using arm bands to identify each other in some states. be aware of this.
Police tend to go after people who are separated from the group, if someone in standing alone, be sure to bring them to the group if possible.
Run, they can’t catch all of you. If your friend is arrested, you might have to leave them behind, you can help them more if you aren’t in a cell.
