Guy Bluford Changed the Course of Space History
On Aug. 30, 1983, Guion Bluford, better known as Guy, became the first African American to fly to space. An accomplished jet pilot and aerospace engineer, Bluford became part of NASA’s 1978 astronaut class that included the first African American, the first Asian American, and the first women astronauts.
He and the other crew members of mission STS-8 were aboard the orbiter Challenger as it lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida; it was the first nighttime launch and landing of the Space Shuttle program. While aboard, he and the other crew members deployed the Indian National Satellite (INSAT-1B), operated a Canadian-built robot arm, conducted experiments with live cell samples, and participated in studies measuring the effects of spaceflight on humans.

Guy Bluford chased his childhood dream of becoming an aerospace engineer, and in doing so, changed history and encouraged other Black astronauts to follow in his footsteps.

Fall, 1905--
James Coates married Noel Knight at the First Baptist Church of Willow Creek. Although the celebration was rather quickly put together, there was no shortage of love felt on the day. It was clear to anyone paying attention that James and Noel adored each other, and their joy spread infectiously throughout the congregation.

Josiah and Elaine ran throughout the grounds, engaging in a series of brief and playful games before finding themselves distracted by the next antic, utterly oblivious to the woman who had quietly joined them. The stranger allowed a moment to pass before breaking it with a warm and amiable "Hello." The children stopped in their tracks, wide eyes locking onto the figure standing on the other side of the fence.

Elaine was the first to recognize the woman. “We met you at the market.”
Whether Josiah managed to recall her or not was inconsequential, as he wasted no time darting into the manor, intent on finding the first authority figure he came across, whether that happened to be Cecily or their father.
“I didn’t mean to scare you,” the lady spoke gently. “I waited at the gate for some time, but no one came around.”
“We don’t normally have visitors aside from Mr.Day and Dr.Alfred,” Elaine explained, “When we do, we’re not allowed to let them in… or speak to them.”
“It’s good to follow rules. I’d hate to be the reason any of you get in trouble.”
Elaine thought for a moment. “If you told me your name, that’d make you less of a stranger.”
Imogene introduced herself with a soft smile.
Before Elaine could share her own name, the clamor of Josiah’s energetic and breathless exclamations reached her ears from behind. He entered the yard alongside their confused father, whose initial bewilderment dissipated as soon as he laid eyes on the culprit behind his son’s distress.

Elaine called to her father, “Daddy, you have a guest! Her name is Imogene!”
Edmund’s composure wavered when hearing her name out of his daughter’s mouth. It felt like a secret he had guarded for over a decade; one he had once intended to carry with him to his grave. And yet, there she stood, visible to his children and on the grounds of his property.
Imogene watched him beckon his children over. While she couldn't discern his words clearly, the slump of the young girl's shoulders and their eventual retreat indicated that he instructed them to go inside.
Both Edmund and Imogene were met with a maelstrom of emotions as he closed the distance between them. Their gazes locked, brimming with unreadable emotions. He struggled to decipher her motives for coming, and she had no way of gauging the overwhelming impact each step he took had on him. Finally, he stood a few feet away from her, the fence still acting as a barrier between them.

"What are you doing here?" His tone carried a note of agitation. Neither of them expected his first words to sound so hostile. He tended to speak without considering his words beforehand.
Imogene’s shame deepened and her awkward smile faded. "I'm sorry," she apologized, her head bowing slightly. "I hadn't fully considered how inappropriate this might be. I can leave.”
Her single step backward held more weight than its physical measure, stirring a sense of guilt within Edmund for addressing her in such a manner. Simultaneously, he felt fear of losing any opportunity to see her again.
Edmund shook his head, cursing himself. “Apologies are all mine. That was uncalled for - I was startled, is all. I mean- What I meant to ask is just-“ He stumbled over his words before gently restating, “What brings you here?”
Her gaze lifted, and their eyes met once more. His apology provided her with a fleeting sense of comfort. “I came to talk,” she said. “If you’re busy, I can return at a more convenient time. Or, if being here is inappropriate, we can come to an agreement on a change of scenery.”
Edmund hesitated, aware that he had only seconds to decide whether he’d open the gates to her or not. There was the chance that if he allowed her entry, she would voice her grievances and then officially vanish from his life. Even with that as a possibility, he preferred the certainty of her confirmation rather than speculations that’d haunt him.
He ran from her on two occasions prior: once after his undisclosed college return, and again in front of the flower shop many years ago, evading confrontation with the weight of his decisions and what that meant for their separate futures. In both instances, he had assumed that was the last he’d ever see of her - convinced that they’d live the rest of their lives accepting the demise of their young love. She’d resent him and he’d carry that knowledge as a silent burden.
Although the impulse to escape was resurfacing, he knew that if he fled this time, it would mark a definitive end. The significance of his current choice outweighed all those from before, and the longer they stood, it became increasingly apparent what his decision was.
