You know what your problem is? You hold everyone to an impossible standard, including yourself. It's super helpful for writing hot-take shakedowns, and clickbait take-downs, but totally toxic for your personal life and internalized sense of self-worth, girl.

bojack horseman is such a weird watch for me because wow this man is a piece of shit and one of the most complicated characters ive ever seen written. but he’s also just a horsey with a cute pink spot on his nose that i want to pet very badly.

So that one season of House was just Total Drama Island right. Like obviously it's actually a riff on the general zeitgeist of reality TV but with House being such a bastard "Host" Total Drama is the only thing that fits for me.

I never thought that such an epiphany would come from an animated series — even though BoJack Horseman is much more than than. She's right, she's fucking right.
I've always justified my shitty behavior feeling as if I was the victim, because it hurt me, but pain doesn't automatically mean redemption — the things I had done didn't suddenly become less serious. I've always, really, always loved characters like BoJack because they seemed more realistic to me, closer to who I am. And when they would make mistakes, I'd feel as if my worst actions weren't so bad after all. Because, like, if BoJack is an asshole, then we're all assholes, right? And that makes it "okay".
But it's not okay, not at all. Diane is so overwhelmingly right, it's almost as if she's talking to us viewers. You've loved BoJack for all of these seasons, you've felt him close to you because he's hopelessly flawed and far from being perfect. But you shouldn't cheer for such a self-destructive asshole of a character. Someone who keeps on going his own way not giving a shit about who he drags down with him. Don't justify him because you think he's like you, and don't justify yourself because you feel close to who he is.

There's no such thing as "bad guys" or "good guys." We're all just guys who do good stuff sometimes and bad stuff sometimes. And all we can do is try to do less bad stuff and more good stuff, but you're never going to be good. Because you're not bad. So, you need to stop using that as an excuse.
