Goodbye Volcano High by KO_OP was recently demoed at GDC and PAX East. I've been busy compiling a bunch of the first impressions together. Also, in two weeks, the demo will be available to download on Steam (May 4th - 8th), so be sure to check it out when it drops! In the meantime, here are the things being said about it by the people who have played it:
Boston Bastard Brigade: "This feels like a proper step in the right direction towards a truly hands-on animated series."
TheGamer.com: "Goodbye Volcano High demonstrates a level of honesty and sincerity that's rare in game writing, and I'm pleasantly surprised about the impact it's already made on me."
Six One Indiecast (coverage starts at 24:00): "I'm really impressed with Goodbye Volcano High. […] The thing that I love about it the most, other than the amazing visuals and the rhythm minigame of it all, the 'narrative game' where you have to make choices, I've never seen this approach before."
Hardcore Gamer: "We have what could stand a chance at being of of this year’s best tales."
Canadian Game Devs (coverage starts at 44:00): "The UI was really cool, the sound design sounded great, the voice acting's good, the art style is so crisp-looking, […] I really like the kinda thematic thing they're going for."
EIP Gaming: "Visual novels, seemingly, needed a pioneer, and Goodbye Volcano High looks to be it."
Press Space To Jump: "Out of all the games on the show floor at PAX East 2023, Goodbye Volcano High was the game that took me somewhere else. I wondered if it would live up to the high expectations I had for the game, and it did. It truly felt like I was watching an animated show, but getting a say in what was happening."
All I could find so far, but in an era where LGBT+ media is being shouted down, banned, or dismissed, it's nice to find and celebrate victories like this. This is especially true for this game, if you've seen my previous post regarding its development history and the LGBT-phobic backlash to it.
Also, be sure to wishlist Goodbye Volcano High on the PSN Store and Steam! Wishlisting helps game devs a whole lot!

It’s not the best visual novel out there, but KonoSuba! Love for These Clothes of Desire! is still more fun than being swallowed by a giant toad.

REVIEW | "Chainsaw Man" - Vol. 14 | B3crew.com

There’s plenty to laugh and cringe at in the fourteenth volume of Chainsaw Man, with Denji & Asa's relationship taking precedent over the usual violence.

REVIEW | "Undead Unluck" - Volume Ten | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade
Tumblr media
Well I have to hand it to Undead Unluck. Ten volumes in, and it still manages to deliver quite a bountiful of surprises. On top of its narrative becoming a lot stronger, its action has become truly S-tier both in presentation and in creativity. Erm, even if said creativity reaches a truly gross level!
Said grossness arrives in the fight between Billy and Andy. After being rescued, Fuuko sets her sights on Spring on top of the tower. Her climb gives Andy the chance to duke it out with Billy, who has a range of techniques that’d make even All For One jealous! However, Andy finds new ways to use his body to aid in his fight, and those techniques are more disgusting than one can even imagine!
Tumblr media
Let me ask you readers something: when’s the last time you’ve seen a hero rip his own skin off to save his tail? How about their own scabs to create clones of themself? Well the answer to that is probably “fucking never!”, which makes Undead Unluck the first time you’ll ever see someone do this. Yoshifumi Tozuka holds nothing back in its presentation, with every sickening detail brought to these pages without a care in the world. To quote the webcomic FlorkOfCows: “I am disgusted, but impressed!”
It takes away nothing from the impressive fight between Andy and Billy, as the Union man does all he can to wallop the Under leader. Blood, weapons, street rubble, and back talk are thrown with a grace that shouldn’t even be allowed in such situations! And yet, this manga finds a way to bring all of it together in a feat of badassery not seen since the eighties! Yes, the fight is an acquired taste (or lack of), but it’s pulled off with such terrific tenacity and fortitude.

REVIEW | "Tegan and Sara: Junior High" | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade
Tumblr media
Junior high school is that time where one starts a finding their true selves. It’s a strange in-between place, where you are constantly conflicted between acting like a kid or an “adult”. But everyone has gone through this, from the most average of people to — in this case — a two twin sisters who’ve played to audiences all over the world. Tegan and Sara: Junior High tells the somewhat true story of the Quin sisters, with some relishing of the truth for the sake of the plot.
Although it was 1991 when Tegan and Sara were in middle school, this version of their story instead places the twins in the modern day. With their parents separated and their mom dating a new-but-nice guy, there’s already a bit of heaviness in the lives of the sisters. But upon entering junior high, both Tegan and Sara find their way to overcome obstacles, be it as a duo or on their separate paths. Of course, this also means that the sisters bump heads over the new people in their lives, especially when it comes to possible bullies and love interests.
Tumblr media
It’s clear that one twin has it rougher than the other. Tegan’s shyness in the beginning makes it a struggle for her to make friends, whereas Sara easily gels with her classmates. But with them being twins, the weird questions start coming out, ranging from telepathy skills to, well, questioning their very existence. However, things get a little weird between the sisters when Avery enters their lives, a girl who bullies one but befriends another.
Much of Tegan and Sara: Junior High focuses on the duo’s first year in their new surroundings. They deal with their share of academic issues, their first bras, and experiencing puberty in the most awkward of ways. Going to see their original first friend Faiza acts as a comfort zone for both, but — as long-distance friendships go — they start drifting apart and changing in ways that make them look like a much different person from before. It’s also the time when the twins start figuring things out about themselves. Well…okay, one does, at the very least.
