This is Expressions of Light 16, done more as a personal project than anything else, but used as my 2014 Christmas card, too.

Deliberately referencing Alphonse Mucha's long-haired ladies in this piece. That thing he does with curls... 🤩

I used Prismacolor pencils over watercolor, over an ink drawing, for this piece. In the arch on top, the centers of the ellipses contain carnelian cabochons.

Wrapping up my Etsy orders gives me warm fuzzies.

So with my (mostly Good Omens and Our Flag Means Death) themed etsy orders, I like to make my customers feel like it's their birthday even if it isn't. (I can't always do the outside of the envelopes like this on international orders due to huge customs labels taking up space, but I like to on UK orders). So they get a pretty holographic envelope, some fun washi tape to unwrap first, then inside you get a hand-written thank-you note from me, some free stickers (OFMD or GO, depending on the theme of what you've ordered, as a little bonus present), pretty organza bag, and usually (mostly for the rings), pretty sparkly wrapping paper and different fun washi tape. EG kraken rings get kraken washi tape, snake rings get snake skin print washi tape. It's not just an order, it's an experience. I specialise in rainbow holographic pride flag designs which you can have your pronouns or fandom themes on top of - eg nonbinary flag with Stede Bonnet's flag over it, or pronouns, or instead of a flag, just a fun, colour shifting, magnetic multichrome background with something like the Good Omens logo on it, or Aziraphale's summoning circle from the bookshop. I have a load more designs I can do, and with neatrly 2,000 different polishes in my collection, I can match almost any colour, so let me know what you have in mind and I can do a custom commission. I also do custom nail art on re-usable press-on nails, which can be worn for repeated short-term wear, eg for a night out or a weekend, then taken off again for work the next day easily, and re-worn again as many times as you like, without damage to your natural nails. You know, I was hoping for a nice wind down in the run up to Christmas, maybe even take a day or two off, and slowly build up some stock in time for a big January relaunch.

Instead, Twitter is trying to melt down before my very eyes, and I’m trying my very best to get my feet under me for a solid start to 2023.

But I come bearing glow! These 3 are from my newest parcel of labradorite, it had some gorgeous multicoloured cabochons. Can’t wait to see who they go home with.

Letters from Watson: The Blue Carbuncle

Part 1: The fun bits

Carbuncle: noun 1) Pathology. a painful circumscribed inflammation of the subcutaneous tissue, resulting in suppuration and sloughing, and having a tendency to spread somewhat like a boil, but more serious in its effects.

2) a gemstone, especially a garnet, cut with a convex back and a cabochon surface. I do not think this double meaning was entirely unintentional, because this case was pretty hard on the goose.

This case was published seventh out of all the short stories: with Watson's commentary on the six cases in his archives matching up to the previously published six, it seems implied that these all happened the same year. Cases published later will not be in the same tidy order.

Peterson the Commissioner is probably a Scotland Yard Commissioner: part of the police but in an administrative role. Love that he said "oh, a lost and found case with a funny story? Perfect Christmas gift for that consulting detective."

As to the hat deductions, the phrenology is strong with this one. If you're not familiar, phrenology was a pseudoscience related to eugenics that purported that the shape and size of a skull was directly related to the qualities of the brain within it. Intelligence, for example, was alleged to be a matter of overall skull size.

The things that we can corroborate based on the hat mostly relate to it's actual condition: It was once a very nice hat, and if its owner could afford a better one, or to repair it, he would not be wearing it out in public in this condition. His recently cut grey hair is of course present on the hat, as is the scent of what he dresses it with.

Other refutations: Holmes do you know how damn sweaty the inside of a hatband usually is? Also sweating is not a sign of being out of shape: it's winter so the man was likely wrapped up warmly, and conditions like that, especially when you're walking around a city, tend to make people sweat. Some much more than others.

Watson's memory of newspaper articles once again comes in clutch.

John Horner, the plumber, is working on something that is not pipes. This probably wasn't weird: Plumber originally comes from the job description of someone who works with lead (which pipes were often made of) so a spot of soldering would have been a normal part of the job.

At least THIS goose will be fresh.

The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle Part 1

It's just past Christmas, and Holmes is inspecting a disreputable hat when Watson calls on him.

Innocent of crimes to describe recent cases.

A goose, a hat, and an Inspector begin the tale, alongside the goose and hat's owner having gotten into a tussle.

"You are too timid in drawing your inferences." Ahh Holmes, Watson's just not the one to hold all the trivia needed to make your deductions in his own head.

Seriously, Holmes? You equate the size of the hat to intellectual ability? I'm scoffing at that one.

The rest of the deductions are reasonable enough.

Carbuncle is "(obsolete) any of several red precious stones " or "garnet-cut cabochon (cut convex but not faceted)". That it is blue makes it quite rare.

And there is a famous sort of one missing as of fives days previous.

We shall have to see how it turns from here…
