Album Review: Dave McMurray - Grateful Deadication 2

Sequels rarely pack the punch of their predecessors. And though Dave McMurray was aiming for the exception, Grateful Deadication 2 is instead the sonic rule.

Following his 2021 original, saxophonist McMurray co-opted six Jerry Garcia and three Bob Weir compositions for GD2. And while there are a few moments of the fabled X-factor captured on tape, more common are light-jazz tracks such as the opening instrumental triad of “Playing in the Band,” “China Cat Sunflower” and “Bird Song” that would sound cool while on hold or in a lift but not in the listening room or the car.

Jamey Johnson makes a country weeper of “To Lay Me Down,” while Dead & Company Bassist Oteil Burbridge is unfortunately double tracked on “Scarlet Begonias” making his vocals sound unnatural.

The highlight comes when McMurray and his band graft some uncredited “Green Onions” into “Truckin’” and when jazz keyboardist Bob James (“Taxi”) hops on board for “The Other One” and “If I Had the World to Give.”

Not essential enough for foreground listening and with too many vocals for the background, Grateful Deadication 2 struggles to find a home in the listening library. But it could definitely provide filler for an expanded edition of the superior Grateful Deadication.

Another from that Deadicated tribute and another cover from the Mars Hotel album. Fine with me, as I like that record. Anyhow, this is by the Harshed Mellows, who only exist for this one tune. It’s basically three-fours of the Georgia Satellites, three-fifths of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and Atlanta-based vocalist Michelle Malone, who’s played with or written songs for everyone from ZZ Top to the Indigo Girls. For the record, that’s Satellites frontman Dan Baird singing and if you’ve ever heard the ‘80s song “Keep Your Hands To Yourself,” you might recognize his voice.

I've been reading a lot of longfics lately and I'm realizing that they're actually a lot longer than the published books I've been reading. So now I'll start a book and realize that I can actually finish it in like a few days of light reading, whereas a longfic might take more hours. I think it's because fanfiction is made without all of the same edits and considerations for marketability and printing, so they can be longer?

I think I need to stop reading fanfiction as heavily because it has completely thrown off my sleep schedule :')
