Dead Pasts and Dread Futures

This is my Dragon Age series following Inquisitor Ixchel Lavellan and her battle to find hope for herself, and hope for Thedas. As the world ends, Ixchel is resurrected under mysterious circumstances and is sent back in time to the Conclave. Ixchel is furious, convinced of her own futility, and yet she cannot give up again. These are the stories of how she gets better.

Symbolism:

I previously made some "tarot" cards for Ixchel. In them I feature a motif of eyes/eye shaped leaves, and the number 7. These represent the Old Gods/Evanuris that threaten Thedas.

Kindle e-book Cover:

The cempasúchil are Ixchel's Ardent Blossom later in the fic. They have layers and layers of meaning for her and her story, beyond her being Mexican. In my headcanons, an ancient tradition passed down from Elvhenan, a noble would give their Champion a crown of flowers, an “ardent blossom” of their own, to honor the promise and dedication their Champion gives to them. In Elvhenan, marigolds play a big role in bonding ceremonies of all kinds, symbolizing a promise that will last through an end–whether that end be the end of a corporeal form through death, or through voluntary uthenera, or some other pre-agreed upon ending of a partnership.

Gingko leaves (bottom orb) come to symbolize hope in the story, and remembrance. She teaches Solas and those around her how to take lessons from the past to build a better future, with the world they're given; in turn, her companions give her the strength to survive anything and to see that future come to pass.

I made this specifically to be a cover on my Kindle, where I've started downloading fics! I used calibre and this tutorial (view on desktop) to edit the metadata for the epub and add the cover to my Kindle. It's a little hard to see in the picture but the values turned out really well and legible IMO!

For the Braised Fried Fish Maw Seafood Treasure Soup, the staff portioned it into ten smaller bowls before serving it to us. Not sure if it is because I am holding a camera, but my bowl came with more chunks of crab meat and fish maw. Basically, a seafood soup thickened with starch so the ingredients seem to be suspended/frozen in the soup. Black vinegar and white pepper accompanied this soup so feel free to add some to it.

Well, the Roasted Crispy Chicken with Prawn Crackers was warm and tender to eat, it however wasn’t crispy at it. And just like everywhere else in Singapore, they referred to this deep-fried chicken as a roasted chicken. Sprinkle a bit of the salt & pepper before putting it into the mouth. A lacklustre dish but thank goodness, the prawn crackers were crispy though.

This Steamed Hybrid Garoupa in Hong Kong Style was cut into sections just before they served it to us. This hybrid grouper is probably a cross between the giant grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus) and brown-marbled grouper or tiger grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus) and given the Dragon Tiger Grouper (龙虎斑) name. The fish got to be very fresh to be steamed and cooked with just a simple condiment of soya sauce, julienned spring onions and cilantro leaves for garnish. The end result, sweet springy flesh with collagen like skin that is so good to eat.

The Braised Whole 10-Head Abalone with Sea Cucumber and Spinach was up next but the process of waiting for the next dish to be served was a long one as in-between the hosts are showing us video stories of the newly married couple and plus the live singing by the friends and band. Ten pieces each of the abalone and sea cucumber sitting atop a bed of blanched Popeye’s favourite green vegetable. Why 10 you may ask? Because a table usually seat ten people so the food portions are divided equally so each get a piece of everything (for the expensive ingredients that is). The only complaint for this dish is that the spinach is on the bitter side.

Like an overturned basket or nest, spilling out Deep-Fried Prawns with Black Truffle Mayonnaise Sauce. If there is anything to change for the presentation, I would move the red and green coral lettuces from under the eatable nest and placed it in the nest for a more dramatic effect. Anyway, these truffle gratings lend an aromatic and earthy fragrances to the classic mayo prawns topped with orange flying fish roe. My colleague and I detected a mild spicy hint of wasabi in it but another colleague said it is from the truffle and mayo combo. Differences aside, this is one dish I won’t mind having again.

I always love this noodle served at the end of the dinner courses just before dessert. The Braised Ee-Fu Noodles with Yellow Chives and Straw Mushrooms is a usual staple at wedding due to the fact it is also known as longevity noodles (寿面). Normally, I would consume more than a bowl of the yi mein (伊面) but that night I was already quite stuffed from the dishes served and I was leaving room for dessert. :D

By the time the last dish was up and the clock was ticking closer to 11pm. The warm Teochew Yam Paste with Gingko Nut and Coconut Milk with its gooey and smooth yam (taro) paste and whole gingko nuts smothered in thickened coconut milk is bursting with sweetness and a great comfort to many of us Singaporeans. I liked the fact that the chef tuned the sugar level to just sweet enough as I preferred mine not too saccharine. Anyway, I just had to ask for another bowl as it was just too good to pass up.

Dinner is now over and after shaking hands with the groom, bride and their respective parents, it is time to head to the train station to catch the train home.

🌿 Old Bones, Old Souls 🌿

The world of velociraptor is buried deep, deep in time. There is so much we’ve learned about it, yet so much we don’t know, and may never know about this ancient animal.

Hi everyone! It feels good to finally post this!! I’ve been rather swamped, but updating my tumblr is one thing I can check off the list!! This piece has been done for a little while, but I’ve only just had time now to format it. I remember doing the rough sketch of this back in the fall and not being too thrilled, but I can now say that I’m really happy with how it came out! This piece also is next to the dragon “Emerald Mist” and I feel they pair really well together :)

This is the last piece to catch up to my other social media, so things will slow down again after this!! I have some plans in the works for the future, but unfortunately I don’t have much of a time scale on it because it depends on my health and my school work. Regardless of when exactly, I am excited to make some new work!! :D

Somehow, this went into my drafts and never posted. This was a treat I made for the BTV server’s Satinalia exchange. @dreadfutures’s Ixchel Lavellan and her beloved, Dirthamen. 

When researching for this, I noticed art deco influence in the Elvhen frescoes and the tarot card art style in Dragon Age: Inquisition. That fit well with the fan-like shape of the gingko leaves, one of Ixchel’s signature elements, so I made an art deco-style fan motif out of the leaves. The embroidery and book embossing are also art deco motifs. <3

Maybe in the abyss AU or when they were really little, but if you wanted intimidation, you get Morax. Honestly, the children are more intimidating than their mother because they're half adeptus/archon, and they're all really tall.

I have this funny image in my head of someone trying to rob wifey and then getting jumped by five tall ass men and women with horns, tails, and claws because how DARE you try and hurt THEIR MOTHER?

Also, bonus: tiny baby dragons yipping and growling at Morax and wifey trying to roar and be scary dragons, and their parents are trying so hard not to laugh because they just sound like grumpy puppies. Wifey caves first because it's too damn cute.

Do you wanna elaborate more on the bond between a dragon and their mate? I assume the process in creating the bond is what happened in Gold as The Gingko Trees but wdym by they can share emotions and stuff? Is it like a bond in abo? How would a dragon know the perfect mate to bond with? Is it instinctual (like a soulmate) or is it someone they get to know? How often do dragons choose mates outside of their own species? How does sex work? How does reproduction work? Birth or eggs?

So dragons choosing mates outside of their species isn’t overly common, but it’s not rare for them to take non-dragons as mates. Usually a dragon will court their chosen for about 4-5 years before choosing to bond because they only mate once in their lives. They don’t really have fated pairs, but they can choose based off how compatible their chosen is.

A mental link is forged after a dragon bonds with their mate! Dragon’s can share their lifespan with their mates if they aren’t of draconic descent, which leads me to think bc of this whole life sharing bond that it ties the mated pair much closer mentally. Due to the bond’s close knit nature to each other’s lives it allows them to share their emotions, and thoughts to a certain degree. I just think it would be a cool little add on to having a dragon share it’s lifespan with it’s mate tbh

Now for sex and reproduction I’ll explain that later lmao bc that is a WHOLE other topic for me I have notes about that whole thing trust me. I am insane abt this stuff

HEADCANON: PHARMCOLOGY && ALCHEMY

centuries have led jing yuan to pursue other forms of knowledge and one of his first pursuit was pharmacology and alchemy with the commission as part of his preventative plans for luofu. while he is far from a master, given his other more important duties, he is fairly knowledgeable equivalent to an expert when it came to the creation of different types of medicinal herbs, antidotes and ointments.

at the moment, he helmed and took over an important project with the alchemy commission after dan shu departed. an antidote for the draught of draconic surge.

at long last, the general encountered his breakthrough after numerous obstacles and have developed the antidote, with the assistance of the alchemy commission, bailu, cao lee, shufeng (@crownedveil) and a certain party of vidyadhara friends loyal to the previous high elder.

HONGLOONG HUA ( red dragon flower ) - seeks to treat the body of a mara-struck or in process. JINLOONG HUA ( golden dragon flower ) - equivalent to remedium tertiorum, a magical medicine from another planet. it seeks to treat the mind of a mara-struck or in process.

as the body and mind are both intertwined yet separate components, it is decided that two medicine are developed to focus on one of each while complimenting each other for the full antidote. it will be taken in cycles over the course of one full year. its efficiency is at best when targeting individuals undergoing the process of mara-stricken and longer cycles is required for those mara-struck.

NOTE that it will not be effective for all xianzhou natives at this early stage of the project. specific groups of body will require certain dosage of medication and a change of variable ingredients due to different medicinal effects and adaptability. more research into this lack of versatility will be committed in the next phase.

the main ingredients are as follows

luoshen powder yuanmei moss astragalus root valerian powder shufeng gingko** terimus tomatoes** small shavings of vidyadhara horns***

** the shufeng gingko is a special component grown under specific conditions and ratios with a homemade fertilizer unique to the source's family secret, giving it a more translucent glow with a rainbow hue. ( like when you score a 5* on the banner kek )

** terimus tomatoes origins are traced outside of luofu and have been brought to grown within luofu. incredibly bitter with a strong foul taste. it acts as an immune booster for the body when broken down, filtered and used in pharmacology.

the two projects above are helmed and successfully harvested by shufeng @crownedveil details of the projects can be found in her journals.

*** the small shavings of vidyadhara horns are donated by vidyadhara friends, many of which remain in close contact with jing yuan after the exile of their beloved high elder of whom they stand with.
