#Happy 10 years The Song of Achilles!!

Honestly I think the core of Achilles's character in The Song of Achilles is that he loves to learn ("He is surprising" 35/his eagerness to hear stories from Odysseus and Diomedes) and grow (pushing himself to beat his own records by having Patroclus count him on the beach, etc) and overall he thrives on the energy and movement of mortal life. This is in comparison to the godly life of eternally staying the same age. If he became immortal, he'd never grow anymore. He'd have challenges to rise up to and meet, but Miller's construction of the godly realm has it so a god's character is incredibly stagnant. Circe and Thetis grow as people, but only as a result of getting entangled with mortal lives.
When Achilles makes the decision to die at Troy, he sets his sights on immortality as payment for his forfeit future. He chooses to die young rather than age into obscurity. But in his desperate clawing for fame (and thus immortality), he casts off all the mortal parts of himself that made him happy. He stops wanting to learn about others ("It’s simpler if they just remember me" 247). He sees success in battle but doesn't push himself to progress the war: he avoids Hector, and thus avoids fate. He sticks himself in a repetitive cycle of killing and prizes that stretches on for 10 years.
He fell in love with the life he had on Pelion. He wants to keep it forever, to gain immortality so he never loses his youth or his most beloved. But on Pelion, he and Patroclus were learning from Chiron and growing into adulthood. Immortality is antithetical to the underlying nature of those things he seeks to keep: the striving involved with growing, the surprise of the unexpected, the ability to share these experiences with another.
The person he becomes at Troy is distanced from Patroclus even before losing him to death. Chapter Thirty, where Achilles sends Patroclus off in his armor, is riddled with parallels to things Achilles once said lovingly. Take this exchange from their time on Pelion: "They never let you be famous and happy...I’m going to be the first." He took my palm and held it to his. "Swear it...Because you’re the reason" (98). At Troy, it turns into this: He held up his hand. “Swear to me,” he said. “Swear to me that if you go, you will not fight them.” “...Yes.” I pressed my hand to his (309).
When Achilles is deciding between his two dooms, Patroclus thinks this: I had seen the joy he took in his own skill, the roaring vitality that was always just beneath the surface (158). Achilles thought that he would avoid losing this joy by choosing a young death. Instead, he loses his desire for both godly and mortal life, even while his body remains strong. Maybe if he'd acted differently at Troy, he could've brought the goodness of his mortal life into his godly one. But he gets so caught up in the fear of losing what he loves to his enemies that he doesn't realize he's robbed himself.

1. How many works do you have on AO3?
20! Three of those are drabble compilations, how I keep my 100-word drabbles organized for different fandoms, but I'm counting them 😂
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
35,104. I don't know how to write long lmao.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Most of my fics (15 of them to be exact, as well as the main longer fic I'm writing atm) are for Outlander, but I've written for a total of 5 fandoms, and hop between them at different times. In addition to Outlander, I have fics/drabbles for The Song of Achilles, The Last Binding Trilogy, 911, and 911: Lone Star.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
To Heart and Home (Outlander, multichap, canon divergent) - by farrrrr, which makes sense, as it's my only multichap

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do! I don't post often enough that I get an overwhelming amount of comments or anything, so it's not a huge burden to reply to them all. I just am continually baffled by people reading what I write, it genuinely blows my mind.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
hmmmmmm. a lot of what I write is pretty angsty, but I love finding and weaving out the thread of hope that lives in those broken places. That said, does heaven have enough angels yet is pretty rough. It's a canon compliant little snippet from the pov of a stillborn infant so like...... she's sad. there's still hope tho! always still hope.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
ooo probably the fluffiest happy fic I have is All the Colors in the Rainbow! It ends with all the Frasers going off to Pride, and it makes me hella happy.
The happiest fic story-wise is probably To Heart and Home, just because it fixes The Main Fuckening that happens in Outlander and brings that family back together earlier.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
*knocks on wood* i haven't yet!
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I don't, I'm not brave enough. The closest I came to it was with Grievances Raised, wherein Claire pegs the brains out of her husband, but I only wrote the aftermath.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I haven't done one yet!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of 🤞🏻
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I don't think so? I feel like I remember someone asking me to translate To Heart and Home a few years ago, but I don't know if anything ever came of it.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I haven't! I feel like I would be the worst co-writer lol, I am farrrr too slow.
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
to write? idk, probably Jamie and Claire? I just feel like I know them, inside and out. I don't have to look for their voices, they're right there.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
oh god, so many outlander ones lmao.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I am really good at matching the tone of the source material! Once I get the voice of the characters/narration/general story style, I feel like I can reproduce the general vibes of canon. I think that's why I sometimes have an easier time with writing fic from stories in the form of books - there's a written tone I can internalize. And consequently, why I've had a harder time with nailing a voice for 911 or Lone Star, even though I do want to eventually write fic for those shows.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Dialogue and plot! I write Vibes™, but I don't know how to write actual Stories. I would love to be that writer who could crank out a whole story with a plot and shit, because I love that type of fic with my whole self, but my brain just functions in vibes.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I am a Coward about it. I've written a fair amount of Gàidhlig into my Outlander fics, especially in To Heart and Home, and honestly I think I've done a pretty good job with it. I spent a lot of time researching the language, up to and including researching grammar structures and taking duolingo lessons at the beginning of the pandemic for a few months. I've forgotten most of it now though, despite duolingo being extremely persistent with its reminders lmao.
However.
If I were to write for 911 and Lone Star like I would like to, I would like to include some Spanish into those stories (especially with Lone Star), and I just don't think I would do it justice. I failed Spanish miserably in high school, and haven't taken a stab at it since. If I include it I want to do it well and respectfully, ya know? I'm bilingual (just not with Spanish lol) and an interpreter, and I think that has brought with it a better understanding of just how complicated language is, and how easy it is to fuck it up when you don't know what you're doing. And as a very white person, I also don't want to act like I know fuck-all about a non-white language and culture when I don't.
Sooooo, I'm a coward about it atm. Hoping to get better eventually though!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Outlander! Never ever thought I would write fic, didn't think I was "allowed." Hadn't ever written anything creatively before (in english at least), so it was a big jump for me. this makes it sound like english is my second language, when really it's just that the first time that anyone made me write creatively was in my deaf lit class
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
Oh god this changes all the time. At the moment I've feeling very tender towards into the empty parts of me. It's a really tragic part of canon, but just gorgeous character potential. I loved how gentle this turned out, how John and Claire had a moment of healing in the middle of their tragedy.
But also I think that the fic I'm writing right now is gonna turn out to be my favorite ❤ once I get the writing juices flowing again for one last section 🤞🏻

yes and no. i love that people take the time to show their appreciation for a fic and i always want to reply and show how much it means to me... but i have this bad habit of not replying to comments on say, older works or older chapters of a fic. idk why... im just not good at it lol BUT I LOVE AND APPRECIATE EVERY SINGLE COMMENT, EVEN THE LITTLE ONES 💖💖
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
oh, Exit Wounds, for sure haha
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
im a sucker for happy endings so i'd say, everything else lol but particularly Almost Idyllic (The Song of Achilles) due to the build up and Salvation also, because of the events leading up to the ending.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not since my ff.net days haha.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
very occasionally. and nothing too wild (except for that dreamling butt plug one. that was. hmm.) but i typically enjoy writing first times.

i do not.

nope. though i have seen ideas/prompts used without credit. it doesn't bother me much.

once, The Red Witch (which btw has been discontinued, pls don't read it lol). it started off just me, then my editor jumped on maybe 5 chapters in once i realized they were much more versed in magick and fantasy than me.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
ahhh haha... fuck. idk i want to say none. but my brain keeps whispering about the dreamling road trip au. i thought i had a plot but as i continue working on bitb and other little drabbles... ive realized i might've bitten off more than i can chew. and my only option is to completely sideline it until im done with bitb, or change the story (because right now the research i have to do for it is too much and y'all know how i am...) it sucks cos i do want to write it. but it's difficult when all my patience for research is already going into one fic (bitb).
16. What are your writing strengths?
dialogue and monologuing, probably.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
self 👏 motivation 👏 finding 👏 the 👏 urge 👏 to 👏 write
(technically, it's tense. i flip between past and present tense constantly and at this point i just consider it one of my endearing qualities pfft)
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
i try to avoid it but when it happens i just use Google Translate and then toss a disclaimer that ive done my best (to which usually a commenter will helpfully correct me and then all is well)
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Inuyashaaaaa (Miroku/Sango omg). exchanging physical notebooks with my friends with fanfics we'd written in school lol
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
truly a tie between Savory & Sweet and Let Me Down Easy (at the moment). the restaurant au was so easy and fun to write (probably because i used to be in the industry) and i reread it a lot. the pacing is fast and i love how immediate Hob and Dream fall into each other haha. Let Me Down Easy was very similar. my major was Media Production in undergrad and although it's been a while since i've held a camera, it was fun putting myself back in that environment. also the angst and tension were just a blast to write and figure out.

as much of an lover i am of hurt no comfort i very rarely write it lmao but a lot of my tsoa fics had sad endings. autumn’s coming around is the first one that popped into mind, but that’s at least slightly open ? i’ll hold your hand while you drown, less so.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I feel like a lot of my fics have equally happy endings haha, the one that came to mind was our hair tangled in the breeze, simply because its a happy ending canon complaint tsoa fic which is a feat lmao

nope the closets ive ever come was when i was 12 and people were like nice story but god your grammar and spelling is terrible! which was fair!

I’d love to continue for everyone im about to prove wrong, and I think I even have a mostly finished chapter lying around somewhere, but I’ve just not had the inspiration rip.

I think I’m good at writing characters in general, especially when it’s from their pov. first person pov my beloved.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I’m not really a person who uses a lot of metaphors of writes flowery language, but i wish i was!! i love very beautiful language and poetic writing but i just don’t do that that much im pretty straight forward, which isn’t a bad thing but I wish i could expand a bit more.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
takes me out the story way too much, it’s fine if it’s like one word every now and then but nah. ive read a couple of young royals fics, and as a swedish speaker its a bit jarring to suddenly have swedish words there lmao

If non published count, harry potter. if only published, glee!

i’m gonna be fair to myself and choose one for soc and one for tsoa.

Icarus by Bastille (this song fucks, I have no other way of explaining it) and Achilles Come Down by Gang of Youths (thanks for the fire fanfic title and for the beautiful ache in my heart I get literally every single time I listen to this)

Ten Books to Know Me By!
Tagged by @honeyteacakes! I really loved your list of books, I saw the scarlet pimpernel on there and did a happy scream!
1. Little Women - Louisa May Alcott
This was a formative book for me throughout my childhood and adolescence. I must have read it almost 10 times. I struggle to read it now (some parts just hit too close to home for me) but I hope one day that I’ll be able to return to this wonderful novel.
2. Daughter of Time - Josephine Tey
This book altered the course of my life, no kidding. If you love history or true crime this book is seriously for you. It will definitely make you rethink everything you know about the way history is written, the way historical individuals are portrayed and why stories are so important.
3. Persuasion - Jane Austen
All of Austen’s novels have impacted me massively, but this one is my favourite. The way that romantic love is portrayed in this book is so beautiful to me, the way people’s personal flaws are portrayed as something that can be forgiven and accepted. This is a very hopeful book, and it is also an incredible portrayal of what it’s like to live with anxiety.
4. Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman
I love all of Neil’s stuff, but this one is probably my favourite. It was the first of his solo novels that I read (after Good Omens). It’s fun, imaginative, terrifying. I fell in love with the idea of urban fantasy thanks to this book, and I think it was super influential on the development of my own writing.
5. Santaland Diaries - David Sedaris
I love the combination of cynicism and sentiment in this book. It's funny, it's real (if a little overexaggerared at times). It also makes me feel better about myself and my struggles with employment. Plus, David Sedaris was probably one of the first gay people I was ever aware of.
I also worked as a Christmas elf in a store (not Macy's, unfortunately) so I feel a forever connection to this book.
6. The Wizard of Earthsea - Ursula K. Le Guin
This book confounded me when I first read it as a child. I didn't like the main character, I found the plot complicated. But returning to it years later, I fell in love with it. It's a book about becoming a better version of yourself, about fucking up majorly and trying to put things right. And about love and friendship. Plus there are further books in the series, and a dragon. What's not to love?
7. War of the Foxes - Richard Siken
I know a lot of people have read Crush, and while I absolutely love it, War of the Foxes is a gentler piece of work which explores some of the same themes from a mature perspective. There are some absolutely beautiful poems in this collection and I really recommend it for anyone who wants to contemporary poetry!
8. 163 Days - Hannah Hodgeson
Another favourite poetry collection! This is a beautiful, unique piece of work that discusses life limiting illness, hospital, and what it's like to be disabled in an able bodied world. It takes a lot to make me cry but this book moves me so much and brings me so much joy, too, because it exists! And I can feel just a little bit less invisible because of it.
9. Cold Comfort Farm - Stella Gibbons
The funniest, most ridiculous book, and an absolutely brilliant satire of British countryside life. I quote this book ALL the time. It is my lifetime ambition to own a cow called Useless.
10. The Song of Achilles - Madeline Miller
Another formative book which did so much for me as a young queer person. The fact that this book was "mainstream" and loved by so many people (including people who may not have naturally been queer allies) made the difficult conversations easier. It was really important for me to be able to bring this book home without having to hide.

i saw someone else do this and thought why the hell not. some fun things about me :)
1. Were you named after anyone?
My name is Haley, and its loosely after Edmond Halley, who discovered Halley's Comet. My parents just didn't like the double L.
2. When was the last time you cried?
This morning. I listened to a song I haven't heard since I was in kindergarten.
3. Do you have any kids?
I'm only 15, and plan to wait a while. I do love kids and want one or two when I'm older. I already have names picked out in my head
4. What sports do you play/have you played?
I played volleyball from 5th to 8th grade, and had 3 undefeated seasons and 2 conference championships. I'm currently on my high school's varsity bowling team.
5. Do you use sarcasm?
Liberally, when in person. not as much online because tone is harder to get across.
6. What's the first thing you notice about people?
General level of colorfulness. Something about people who have a lot of fun with color in their clothes and hair and everything tend to draw me in pretty quick. being free and comfortable with clothes and color is a huge green flag for me
7. What's your eye color?
Brown so dark it looks black.
8. Scary movies or happy endings?
Happy endings every time. I'll watch horror if there's nothing else on, but it's not my go to. Give me the angst then stuff it full of hurt/comfort until they ride off into the sunset.
9. Any talents?
Pretty good at art and have a decent singing voice.
10. Top 3 fandoms?
Good Omens, PJO, then LOTR. This account is pretty much good omens even though it started for PJO, but I interact more with PJO and LOTR content on instagram and other apps. good omens certainly has the best stock of fic writers, meta writers, and fanartists imo.
11. Hobbies?
I crochet a ton, and have sold at a couple craft shows. Current obsession is crocheting replicas of the many sweaters of David Tennant. Other than that, I read and draw as much as possible.
12. Do you have pets?
I have a painted turtle named Oliver, a 21 year old cat named Claudia, and a crap ton of fish. We foster kittens occasionally, current babies are Squadcar, Squinty, Eddie, Beelzebub, and Hastur. i think its obvious which ones I was allowed to name..
13. How tall are you?
5'5"
14. Favorite subject in school?
Current favorite classes are digital art and web design, but favorite mandatory class is AP World History.
15. Dream job?
Something in either animation or museum curation.
16. Favorite books?
Good Omens, LOTR, PJO, Lockwood & Co, The Reader trilogy, The Girl at Midnight trilogy, Song of Achilles. anything myth or fantasy based, really!

f - favorite song: How can I just pick one song? Achilles come down from Gang of Youths imeditaly comes to mind, and Hozier's Diner and Diatrides and Vienna by Billy Joel.
g - grossest memory: eh... I don't wish to trigger my friends with emetophobia.
h -horror yes or horror no: Yes horror. My current blog icon is Carrie even. Horror is my absolute favorite genre. I think, when done right, it can be used to explore a lot of societal commontary. It's a genre in which anything can happen, such a playground!
i -in love?: Very much so with my two wonderful partners <3.
j - jealous of people?: Not jealous but more envy. in a sense that I might want what something (like owning a house, a better job etc.) Never in a way that I want something and therefore think someone else doesn’t deserve it. I feel like that’s healthy.
l - love at first sight or should I walk by again?: Always walk by again! Love at first conversation though, I believe in that.
m - middle name: Don’t have one, maybe if I ever legally change my name I will get one?

r - reason to smile: 10 years ago I was a depressed weirdo lonely teenager. Today I'm surrounded by people who care about me and who I love in return. I'm currently only doing things that make me happy. My cat is taking a nap beside me. I've made it :).

t -time you woke up: at 8:15, snoozed til 9:00 and then I decided nope, went back to bed til noon.

v - vacation destination: I have two seperate trips to London plannend. I have already been to London this year. I keep going to London. Why do I keep going to London?
w -worst habit: I'll just say it, I'm bad with money. Which is bad because I have a job and I have acces to adult money. On the brightside, I have to coolest wardrobe.
x - x-rays: Broke my knee 3 years ago. I have a beautiful X-ray and even a 3D model of that masterpiece :). No I haven't recoverd and I probably never walk normally again. :( (chronic pain gain, rise up)
y - your favorite food: I think sushi is overrated, and yet it is sushi.
z - zodiac sign: I'm a June Gemini with Scorpio rising. If I believed in astrology, I think this would explain a lot about me.

Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall
Another case of a book that I couldn't put down once I picked it up.
It's fun, it's witty, it's touching and it has one of my favorite tropes, the Fake Dating to Lovers, both characters are deeply flawded and they complement each other very well; the story is so well written and has such fun dinamics between their main and side characters and touching moments that will stay with you for a long time.
As soon as I was done reading it I wanted to read it all over again, and when I found out there was sequel coming out in August I couldn't be happier!
If you're a fan of romantic comedy and queer books, this is a must read.

I just finished Ultimate Weapon Alice. Hands down one of the best dramas I've watched action wise and romance wise all year. Actually in the past 5 years. I rank this show that highly. I know when it finally gets popular in the mainstream like Squid Game or something like some other popular top 10 Netflix show, people will definitely ask themselves how did they miss this gem.
Totally reminds me of when I first read The Song of Achilles the year it came out in 2011. I was like this book is wonderful and has so many layers like an onion, that one day it will be on something like OH THIS BOOK IS THE BEST EVER AND LET'S TALK ABOUT IT! It's 2022 and I just now see TSOA at my local Target on the popular books and I don't have to go searching for it like it's some diamond in the rough anymore. It's hilarious watching certain media become popular LATER. So many get so mad and start gatekeeping and I'm like, bro, it's not about that. Sometimes things become popular at different times. We're all not on the same schedule. Loving media is like that. That's the joy of libraries and finding your favorite song at random times. We're not all gonna get that at the SAME time. But when you do come across something and you feel alone, a lot of the time you will be able to see years later the RESURGANCE. The OH WE NEED TO DISCUSS THIS MEDIA NOW. IT MISSED IT WHEN IT AIRED BUT LET'S DISCUSS IT NOW.
Ultimate Weapon Alice will in my opinion have that moment. I can feel that in my soul just like TSOA in 2011. It's amazing in ways that I'm like, productions with 10x the budget and "star power" wish they had 10% of the sheer performances in this show.
Dark humor. Complex story line. Cliché tropes being poked fun of and yet in the end, you realize it's all completely realistic anyways. Sometimes life IS like that. It feels like a trope. Trauma is like that. It's not this little neat little box with oh I fell in love and it fixed me. No. The trauma talked about in this show is refreshing in a way that I'm like, I wish this was in a TED talk by itself. If this was watched maybe just MAYBE we could get the ball rolling on so many mental health points in a way others will NOT feel ashamed or be immediately demonized for saying they are suicidal due to severe trauma etc etc. The writers did their homework. So much work BEHIND the scenes show in this show. Closest mega production I can think of that tackled this and is openly talked about is the first Deadpool movie.
It might not be on a top 10 most watched list this year in 2022 for many, but I know years later it's going to be, oh what was I doing in 2022 when this show came out? How did I miss it? It's gonna have that later.
It's absolutely perfection in a way of, it made me go, I've had the worst year of my life this year in 2022, but this 8 episode show I found yesterday and binged in 2 days, when I've not done that in months due to severe depression myself, I'm like, oh. I feel seen and heard and I have a little more hope too. I know I'm not alone. I'm not new to severe depression. Had it also since I was a kid. I'm 31. But wow, seeing a show tackle it the way Ultimate Weapon Alice did? *chef's kiss* I wish the entire cast and crew nothing but success and happiness and many more projects.
10/10 must watch.

I love a good essay about an underrated drama!
I feel the same way - is it the best K-Drama ever? No BUT. For the low budget, the NOT a-list actors (though hopefully now they'll all get leading roles!) and the concept I just loved it! And it WAS weird how no one watched it and I honestly just stumbled upon it. LUCKY MEEEEE :)

Since I just received a mean anon who complained that I post about too many different things/fandoms, here's a small list of things I enjoy and that you will most likely see on here: (not that I need to justify myself *sigh* but here we go)
•My Chemical Romance and everything that comes with it. MCR is my entire world. Always has been, always will be. Mikey Way is my biggest love xx

•Mental/Physical health (hi, I have bpd, ocd, an ed, depression, anxiety disorder and crohns disease. Feel free to reach out if you need someone to talk to)
•Heartstopper (obviously) and everything involving it. Love my sweethearts Nick and Charlie, Kit&Joe and everything our Lord and Savior Alice has done for us so far
•LGBTQ+ related things/Especially bisexual pride (hi I'm bi)
•Alexander the Great and Hephaestion /Achilles and Patroclus/ Greek mythology in general. (Grew up with it, my mama educated me well in that regard)
•Bands, such as Fall Out Boy, P!atd, 30 Seconds to Mars, Sunrise Avenue- just to name a few
•Author related stuff such as writing/ao3/writers block, fanfiction in general etc
•I also enjoy Miraculous Ladybug, Atypical, The Umbrella Academy, Doctor Who, Queer as Folk, Gilmore Girls, The Walking Dead and a gigantic bunch of other series and movies
This list could go on and on but I think those few points cover my current interest.
Look guys, people and interests change. When I created this blog roughly 10 years ago I was very much into The Hunger Games, Jacksepticeye, Markiplier, Sia and Ireland. (Still love all of that to pieces!) This blog will never have just one specific thing I post/blog about. I love tumblr and I want to continue feeling safe and happy here, and due to that I post what makes me feel good. I hope you can respect that. Thanks for understanding ❤️
