How Has Women's Literature and Bundan Culture in Japan Evolved Over Time, from Lady Murasaki to Contemporary Magical Realism
When one thinks of Japanese culture, certain images come to mind: samurai warriors, geishas, and sushi, just to name a few. However, one aspect of Japanese culture that is often overlooked is the Bundan culture. The Bundan, which roughly translates to “literary circle,” emerged in Japan in the early 20th century and has since become a significant part of the country’s literary tradition. The…

The Onmyodo Game: What's In The Box
As I'm getting closer to the final stages of production, it's safe time to mention what will be included in the game. 1. The 'Box' will be a carved wooden chest. I am expecting most, if not all, of these boxes to feature the Inyo (Yin/Yang) symbol carved into the lid, though may offer alternative designs (such as Godai symbols etc) Boxes will likely be hinged. 2. Over 120 Tani Cards, each one featuring a region containing a different Yokai! These cards form your legendary Journey! 3. 54 unique Traveler Cards, each featuring a special character who might be in your group. Legendary characters such as Abe no Seimei, Momochi Sandayu and Son Goku! Historical archetypes such as the Noh Performer, the Onna Bugesiha and the Anui Huntress! 4. 12 double-sided Season Cards (for 24 Seasons total), each side featuring 3 microseasons (72 total!) that can affect your adventure!
5. A unique Season Marker to use with the Season Cards. (exact design still being developed!). I may also included a second Marker to use on the Tani cards themselves, mostly for cosmetic purposes.
6. Innovative 'Rulebook' consisting of tarot-sized cards bound with a ring so that all pages can lay flat. The pages can even be reordered or removed if desired by the player.
If the game also exists in a Kickstarter Campaign, I may offer upgrades and special add-ons, such as Matsuri Festival Items.

There's still time to get tickets to Monday's History of Kimono lecture! I've been reworking the slideshow to improve the flow, add more images, and correct a few spelling mistakes that had crept in. I'm very excited to see what everyone else thinks of it.  What: History of Kimono Where: Zoom ($10 ticket), Angry History Guy's FB page for 24 hours after the presentation ends (minimum $1 donation to be notified when it is available) When: Monday, July 27th at 7pm EST How: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/history-of-kimono-tickets-111485207256?aff=instagram   The word "kimono" translates literally as "thing that is pulled on (over the shoulders)." The study of historical clothing often focuses on Western Europe and its cultural derivatives, while the styles worn in other parts of the world are summarized as "traditional" and assumed to have changed very little. This is very rarely accurate-- all human fashion stems from a continuing relationship between economics, technology, politics, and aesthetics, creating a shifting system that evolves over time. I have been studying historical clothing in general and Japanese historical clothing in particular for over a decade, and I am looking forward to introducing you to the fascinating trajectory of traditional Japanese clothing between 500AD and the 1920s. The presentation consists of a lecture with slide show followed by a Q and A, and lasts about an hour.    The presentation will be recorded and available to watch on my public FB page and Youtube channel for 24 hours: https://www.facebook.com/Angry-History-Guy-100580271451129 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUXZ10pypo-OsqaHbIp7aDQ #kimono #kimonohistory #japanesehistory #historicalclothing #clothinghistory #historicalkimono #heianperiod #costumehistory #sewing #textilehistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CDHPBJvAuVJ/?igshid=1gk1whgj1mvif

Today’s poem is from the first poetry collection I ever bought: THE INK DARK MOON (Love Poems by Ono no Komachi and Izumi Shikoku, Women of the Ancient Court of Japan), translated by Jane Hirshfield, from @vintagebooks. This particular one is Shikibu. She has just taken Prince Atsumichi as a new lover. This #heianperiod #japanesepoetry dyed my own poems deeply. #izumishikibu #janehirshfield #poetryintranslation #poetrymonth2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/B-pikIvgaBO/?igshid=1fyrjx4mhku4h

😲Look at the amount of people who attended this year’s Aoi Matsuri (one of Kyoto’s Top 3 Matsuris)...I believe this line stretched 2.5 miles from the Shimogamo to the Kamigamo shrine! ...It was a long wait and had to go there early to get a good spot. Doesn’t matter though as we were rewarded with very good views and a nice hot weather perfect for tanning 🌞🌞🌞 #aoimatsuri2019 #kamogawa #kamoriver #kyoto #japan #travelblogger #matsuri #hollyhockfestival #onlyinjapan #heianperiod #tokyocameraclub #xandriainjapan2019 (at Kamo River) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxexSbnAC5z/?igshid=1spfd93fkqwit

-
Welcome to a new cultural delivery in this occasion I am going to comment on the festivity, the day of the child that is celebrated every 5th of May that is called Kodomo no Hi and it would be writtenこどもの日 once said this make yourselves comfortable that we begin. - When did Children's Day come about? The holiday, which dates back to the 8th century AD in what would be the Heian period, was possibly influenced by Chinese in this respect as it was based on Tango no Sekku. Sekku is based on the turning points of the seasons and is based on the five element theory of yin and yang in China. - The traditional way to celebrate it is to offer seasonal offerings to the gods, pray and eat second-hand goods together. In the Kamakura period, at the height of the samurai boom, it became an important event to pray for the growth and health of children and the prosperity of the family, with decorations such as armour, helmets, carp streamers and festive dolls. - Now here are some of the sweets usually eaten on May 5th: Kashiwa mochi, Chimaki, beko mochi, akumaki, no koi cake. - I hope you liked it and see you in future posts and have a happy children's day.
