self indulgent got concept.
Ned brings Jon home, Cat hates the boy, everything stays the same... until Robert Baratheon is charging through the halls of Winterfell looking for the babe, ready to butcher the poor thing where he lay helpless in his cradle.
in a matter of moments Catelyn learns three things:
The babe was never a bastard, Ned had only lied to her to protect Jon, and that she would die before she let Robert lay a finger on the babe she'd previously wished death upon.
cue Catelyn Stark snatching Jon from his cradle, holding him, protecting him, loving him as she would her own son, risking it all to keep him safe, all care for herself thrown to the wind.
like they say, what a mother's love holds no bounds, and what it makes her capable of had no limits.
#listen listen listen#I just want Catelyn to love Jon Snow and I don't care what I ahve to do to make it happen#(plus the angst is delicious)#I was rewatching old kids movies and ended up watching ice age and idk why but the mom sacrificing herself for her babe gave me ideas#I just imagine young Cat holding onto the boy she hated and wished death on for being bastard (only to find out he wasn't one) as tightly-#as she could. knowing Robert and his men were coming. knowing they would slaughter the boy in front of her. knwoing she'd wished for this-#and deciding she'd give her own life to protect him if thats what it came to.#and in my mind she jumped from the window of the nursery knowing the halls will be filled with the kings men and leave little chance for-#escape. before fleeing on injured legs to hide the babe and herself knowing Robert would be right behind her. she's in agony. but she'll-#going for the babes sake. she won't stop until her heart is dead in her chest. even if it hurts to move and breath and think he keeps going#maybe she takes a horse and flees wintefell all together. maybe she hides somewhere in/around the castle. maybe Robert catches her?#if she runs with him she'd have nothing but the clothes on her back. she'd have to feed him and keep him warm. she'd have left her own son-#behind. the potential angst and hurt/comfort as Cat misses her own son and learns to love another. feeding him and keeping him warm from-#her own body while she's injured and lost and at the will of the elements of the strange new place she now considered calling home#idk I just think it'd be an interesting concept#there's something about a mother and her child being cornered by 'wolves' (in this case a stag). this has the added spice of Cat and Jon's-#dynamic. just earlier that day she could barely look at him and now she's willing to die for him. the change happened in seconds.#that was a lot of ranting in the tags. oops. anyway...#catelyn stark#jon snow#I love putting these two in harrowing. life altering. and/or traumatic situations so they can finally just be mother and son#I live for the angsty family feels#got#game of thrones#asoiaf

We’re almost halfway through the year so I felt in the mood to make a rec list, and what better fics to rec than the ones which have possibly been overlooked in 2020!
Please remember that this is my own rec list and not being on here does not reflect skill, enjoyment or anything else. It’s just my opinion!
Enjoy! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
• Pretty Little Bunny by funnylookinfella (2.2k, E) Kylo makes the 'mistake' of telling Hux he thinks bunnies are cute. Just a silly little smut fic for springtime!
• Kitten by koi_boi (3k, M) Hux sleeps in an orange cat onesie (which happens to match Millicent). Kylo catches him snoozing in said onesie. They cuddle.
•  Paintball Warriors by @rudbeckiasun (2k, E) Supreme Leader Kylo Ren decrees that all officers must have shore leave. Then someone suggests teambuilding activities. Hux isn’t convinced, but paintballing turns out to be far more entertaining than he ever imagined.
• You're My Fucked Up Remedy by @nonsensicalsoliloquy (15.7k, E) For years now, Hux had plans. For so many long, arduous years he’d schemed in the shadows, waging a silent war with the men who’d taken his life and diligently strived to have it suit their every desire. He thought himself prepared for anything. However, what Hux hadn’t planned for, what took over his messed up existence like it suddenly had any other meaning beyond vengeance…was Ren.
• Revenge is Best Served with Hesitation by @heresetrash (4.6k, E) Hux had never been one to do his own dirty work. He preferred to send others to perform those tasks for him. Not because he couldn't do them himself - he was more than capable - but such work was time-consuming and messy, and he had better things to do. Kylo, however, was different. This was personal. Hux didn't just want to kill him himself, he needed to.
• Matters of Efficiency by mundanecactus (4.3k, T) A diplomatic mission goes awry, and General Hux is forced to admit that maybe he doesn't have a protocol for everything...
• Sick Day by newh0pe (2.3k, T) Kylo Ren has killed Supreme Leader Snoke and become one of the most powerful men in the galaxy... but his boyfriend still has to drag him out of bed when he isn't feeling well and baby him.
• We Remain by @drxcomxlfoys (1.1k, G) Kylo finds Hux in the holding cell after Pryde shot him. They both decide to leave the First Order.
• Smirks and Cigarettes by @ashenpages (1.8k, T) The first time Hux has Ren light his cigarette, it isn’t planned or discussed, or even a sensible time to be smoking.
•  ghosts from the past by morlawny (<1k, T) It was the same nightmare he had been having for the past few months, and it was haunting him. His father’s voice, the look he gave him… The way his hand touched his face... Kylo released a deep, heavy sigh, causing the body next to him to stir.
• Regeneration by DaisyChainz (3.8k, E) Hux discovers Kylo Ren out in the woods practicing a local ritual to welcome their current planet's Vernal Equinox. Somehow he gets drawn into the rites and finds that, while he objects to the mess, there might be something to the idea of 'renewal'.
• You're Making Fun of Me by DeviantDarkBelle (<1k, M) Kissing something that shouldn't be kissed.
• A Murder on Starscatter Isle by @theweddingofthefoxes (WIP, 8.2k, M) Detective Armitage Hux has volunteered for the case of a lifetime -- solving the murder of Snoke, the leader of a mysterious and isolated commune. If he succeeds, he's sure to get promoted. But if he fails, he could be in for more than he ever expected. Is the new leader, Kylo Ren, a friend, a foe, or something else entirely?
• By the Grace of the Fire and the Flames by Mothwing (11.1k, E) The sight of the pale, sunken chest lifting, pausing, falling again as the valve released. Air escaped the slack mouth with a little huff. Hux’s eyes were sunken and closed. He looked so much smaller than Ben remembered, vulnerable, almost soft around the edges, all his wiry strength gone. Ben had strangled him with both the force and his bare hands before, in anger and in a lust that felt very much like anger. And even though it could have never been easier to end his life, something stopped Ben just as it had always stopped Kylo. Something about the dry patches on his hands. Something about the blue shadows under his eyes. It felt odd to say this, but there was simply no honour in killing this man. Nothing good would come from ending this life, even though, and Ben knew that, they both deserved to die. A little balance. A little justice. And you could not tell a corpse that it’d lost. Ben dismissed the thought. No one was even keeping score any more.
• Whole Worlds Fade by boomsherlocka (34.5k, M) Their first meeting was not noteworthy. Hux was not yet General, and Ren was not yet what he would eventually become.
• Watch This by DaisyChainz (2k, E) Hux had never had a lover like Kylo before: someone that wants Hux, and not just a random warm body. So Hux Really wants to give Kylo what he's asking for, but he's just so damn exhausted. Luckily, Kylo has a stimulating solution.
• Aural by @kyluxtrashpit (2.7k, E) Hux fucks Kylo's ear.
• let go by DarthKyloRen (1.8k, G) “You’re in pain,” Ben’s small voice broke the silence. Kylo nodded in agreement. “I am.” “You don’t have to be.” “Yes I do.”
•  The Bidding by tsar_saltans_swan (3.4k, T) "Going once, going twice, won't these gentlemen suffice?" Armitage, a young lawyer, is suddenly thrown into an auction house to atone for the crime of not finding a wife by 25. It's a living hell... until he meets Ben.
• My Jolly Sailor Bold by @ellalba (<1k, G) A ship wonders into the Knight’s of Ren territory and get taken down by Kylo and his knights. Kylo has always been fascinated by humans but never really gotten the opportunity to actually interact with one in a way that doesn’t end with bloody murder. So he spots his opportunity to keep one when he sees a survivor getting away in a rowboat. A survivor with red hair.
• Take A Jump And Pray, May The Force Guide You by @ggerisminth (5.5k, M) The Resistance won, there is peace, well their version of peace. It isn't peace, it isn't even stability. It's just as worse as it was if not worse. But the far greater tragedy is the death of her family, and she will do everything in her power to get them back, even if that means using a technology created by the Sith to take her back in time. Even if it means that it might not work, or that she can never come back. She will never stop fighting to get them back, that is a promise. A promise to the Force, the Stars, and the Moon.
• Stay or Go? by Lokisbestgirl (5k, M) Hux enters into an arranged marriage with General Pryde for power and protection, but he's not getting any satisfaction in the bedroom. When Kylo comes around, they start sleeping together behind Enric's back and Hux finds out he is expecting. The trick is to get Pryde to sleep with Armitage again before suspicion arises. Will Pryde find out or will they get away with it all?
• Fixed by Offing (<1k, T) There was a small bottle sitting on the side table. It was clear, filled with a yellow liquid, and labeled simply, “Happiness”. A hypodermic needle sat next to it.
• I Really Wish I Hated You by inquisitor_tohru (1.5k, T) In another galaxy far, far away, Kylo Ren becomes aware that the voices he's hearing may not be aIl that they seem and comes to the unfortunate conclusion that Hux may be his only hope.
• Caim by Eiramma (20k, T) Hux is stolen from his academy bunk late one night and is dumped on the frozen waste land that is Ilum along with a small handful of his other classmates. Despite never having dreamed a night of his life, on his first night on this frozen planet, Hux finds himself in the body of an angry padawan, Ben Solo. As his stay on Ilum continues, it becomes apparent that pair of them share some sort of deep connection forged through mysticism of the Force, that permits them spend their dreams in one another's waking lives, and Hux has no idea why. But with danger lurking around every snow covered tree, Hux begins to wonder if he will be able to live long enough to understand the mystery of their bond, never mind deal with the growing fondness for the other boy that has begun to bloom in his heart.
• A War of Wages by R_Quarion (2.9k, M) When Kylo Ren kills Palpatine and the power is passed onto him, the Rebellion becomes a story of the past. With the First and Final Order in control of the galaxy, Hux cannot believe that he doesn't even have control over his own paychecks. Phasma is stubborn.
• Wookie Wash by @bostarsky & @sunnywritesstuff (5.6k, E) There had been posters, propaganda on the minuscule level. Nobody had been bold enough to do anything directly, but Hux could tell the decision had not been taken well by his men. That was when he had prompted the head of morale on base to do something about the insurrection, and she had told him she would fix it. Hoping he had finally washed his hands of the matter, Hux had gone back about his day as normal. That had been three days ago, before all the racket. The issue with the campaign was that the model who had been shown in the ad was... Incredibly attractive, to say the least, and apparently the morale officer said that that man was none other than Kylo Ren. Now, nobody had ever seen his face before, but everyone always assumed he was ugly. Hux loathed drama and gossip of all kinds, it distracted his officers from their important duties... But even he couldn't get over the ridiculousness of the new advertisement. There was no way in the galaxy that such an attractive man could be under that mask, and Hux wanted to get to the bottom of it.
• To be Licked, Topped and Loved by hexgoldyloins (2.1k, E) Ren wants to be licked, topped and loved. Hux is willing to explore that.
• For This One Night by Lady_Faulkner (<1k, T) As Starkiller Base nears its completion, Supreme Leader Snoke orders General Hux to go on vacation. The general isn’t pleased. At least he has Kylo Ren in a speedo to look at.
• Halloween Candles by @paperprinc3 (1.3k, M) Ben convinces his friend Hux to help him with a ritual so that Ben can try and talk to his dead grandfather Anakin. The ritual requires a virgin host to take the spirit however Hux didn't think that it was meant literally.
• Fate Is A Cruel Thing by shinogi (<1k, T) What would happen if Kylo was on the steadfast during the events that took place to Hux?
• An Eros Festival Gift by Lady_Faulkner (<1k, T) Hux has been away for two weeks, but he’s due back on the start the Eros Festival, a galaxy wide festival of love, and Kylo has the perfect gift for him. That is, he hopes he does.
• An Earned Reward by PrincessDesire (5.2k, E) Hux rewards his sub Ren for a successful mission.
• Snow Powered by IsaiahVirus (<1k, G) Kylo finds comfort in the snow and in Hux.
• Calligraphy by @emperorsvornskr (1.1k, T) Kylo goes back to an old form of meditation assistance, and asks Hux to participate to give them both some stress relief.
• He's Got the Whole World in his Hands by undernightlight  (<1k, G)   Finally, he is the Supreme Leader. He has the power he’s always deserved, the power that was promised to him, so then, why does he still feel hollow?
• Twin Crowns by kylux_nonsense (<1k, G) Twin thrones, one black marble on white floor, one white marble on black floor. Twin crowns, one rests amongst long, dark hair, one sits atop fiery red. There is but one galaxy, and in all its infinite variety every corner owes its allegiance to one or the other.
• Eh, it's love by @abboh (<1k, G) Hux was never one to show love of any degree but then there was Kylo, who showed his love in his own little ways.
• Castles in the Sand by orphan_account (2.4k, T)   A depressed General Hux and his secretive obsessive pining for Kylo Ren.
• The Duel of the Fates by mheb (31.2k, E) Hux’s datapad chimed again, a call from Kuat this time, and he sighed aloud at it, exasperated. “What?” Hux leaned back in his chair, eyeing the holographic figure seated across from him, the shadowy form of their TIE cockpit barely visible around their body, the entire image emitted from the steel inlay in the far wall that Hux used to transmit his speeches. Hux carelessly knocked over a good half of the physical chess pieces in front of him, putting his bare feet up on his desk. His projected guest scowled at him. But Hux paled at the words that met his ears through his datapad. 'Jedi are with the rebel group that bombed the fueling station...the girl is here.' He ended the call without a goodbye, returning to the other conversation he’d been having, up until this point quite pleasant. “Ren.”
• And They Were Bottoms! (~oh my God, they were bottoms~) by   Ki_Ken_Tai_Ichi (<1k, T) Kylo and Hux both had very similar -and yet very different- plans for how their first night of intimacy was going to go.
• Tough Games by ouigeneral (4k, E) Kylo Ren and Armitage Hux have been participating in a secret relationship for a while. Both men love power play and experimenting with bondage. One night Hux organises a surprise for Kylo. Kylo certainly is surprised.
• Hate until you love by SuperEllen (<1k, T) Can you hate someone so much that you actually love them?
• Mark Me, Burn Me (the sun is nothing compared to you) by                 DiamondCrystalInk (1.7k, T) Enjoying a morning on Coruscant, Hux gives Ren a proposition. It's time Hux leaves his mark.
• Put Your Money on Me by Asrael_Valtiri (2.5k, E, WIP) He felt Ren press against his back, wrap his arms around his waist. He couldn’t help himself; he leaned back into Ren’s broad chest. Hux was glad their full-length mirror was behind them; he didn’t want Ren to see his face. So Hux closed his eyes a moment, let himself pretend he possessed all he’d ever wanted. Power, security, order, galactic peace--and above all, Ren.
• deep by g4t1t0 (2.9k, T) snoke dies and kylo ren is lost. hux hates to see him this way, but for a reason he cant name/hux prefers to see ren enraged, violent, hungry/he gets what he wants
• Heads Will Roll by @pizzzazlut (2.3k, M) Hux and Kylo decide to venture into the notoriously haunted Arkanis Asylum one night to try and see if they can get actual evidence in their ongoing investigation into the question, are ghosts real?
• Grandfather of the Century by ashangel101010 (<1k, T) The Emperor of the Seven Sith Hells does his best to protect his grandson.
• Love and Fear by @abboh (<1k, G) Sometimes it is better to be feared than loved by your people. But, gazing down from above, love can be found amdist all that fear.
• Take A Moment To Ask Yourself, Is This How We Fall Apart? by @bumblebae8 (1k, T) Take a moment to ask yourself… if this is how we fall apart?
• You Ruined It by ravenlights (1.1k, T) Kylo Ren is serious about home-baked muffins, and Hux, well. Hux ruins it.
• Crevices Of Sanity by WynneWritesHQ (<1k, T) How late the hour was, or how ramshackle the small room in which General Hux had decided he would spend the night, did not matter anymore. Not when everything he could think about was the man kissing his neck, carrying him aloft and onto some crates that, miraculously, withstood the general disorder better than the dusty residues beneath his always-well-polished boots.
• Pygmalion by orphan_account (17.4k, T) This is a story inspired by the theme of artificial intelligence and explores Armitage Hux's feelings of loneliness and isolation in the First Order. Unable or unwilling to seek out human connections and relationships, Hux turns to a company which provides custom built androids as personal companions to satisfy his need for intimacy.
Adjacent Ship Recs
• Home for Dinner by DaisyChainz (2.9k, E) Matt is always so sweet and attentive to Techie. When he's having a bad day, Techie tries to be brave enough to make things better for him.
 • Icing on the (Strawberry) Cake by Luxuria_Ira (3.6k, G) On a rainy night in June, Clyde takes Stensland up into the rolling hills of West Virginia and asks him a question that's been on the tip of his tongue since they met.
• Better, Ren? by DeviantDarkBelle (1.5k, E) Before Hux and Kylo have to return from leave, Hux hopes he can treat Kylo to something nice. Of course, Thomas and Charlie are more than willing to help out.
• Someone could see us by DeviantDarkBelle (<1k, E) Thomas McGregor is on vacation in NYC. He runs into Charlie Barber. Somewhere along the way, feelings are caught.
• Horny Hearts by Rattlesnake (9.5k, E, WIP) Techie has a new flatmate called Matt and all he can really think about is doing it with him.
• Leaving It Up to You by undernightlight (8k, E) Henry Beard had been staring at him all day - Flip wasn't blind. Once it was just the two of them in the office, Flip decided to casually confront him about why. He had a mild suspicion, but he wanted to know for sure. He likes to be proven right.
• The Might and Measure of Love by @atlinmerrick (1.2k, E) A clearer invitation to go poking around inside Mr Cheung's house was never made, so a minute later and sure enough Clyde found Stens in the bathroom making weird little frantic noises. Clyde knew those noises. They were 'trying desperately to get off because of awkwardly-timed stiffy' noises.

Tumblr media
Also, he may be an asshole but he's our asshole
─────────────────
More: warm hugs
The brunet detective let out a grunt as he flopped himself on the couch, grabbing some of the couch's cushions and groaned on it to muffle the sound while his lover merely looked at him with amused [Eye color] eyes. Arms crossed as he rosed a brow at the brunet male who just laid there.
"Okay, what happened now?" The [Hair color] haired man had asked as he uncrossed his arms and walked towards his brunet lover who let out another groan.
"Robbers... attack... child... t-that's what happened..." Gavin had said as he took the cushion away from his face and placed it on his stomach and stared blankly at the ceiling as [Hair color] haired man had sat beside the brunet's legs.
"And?" Gavin grumbled out some curses as he maneuvered himself to face his lover, rolling his eyes as he did. The brunet had stayed quiet for a bit as his mind went back to what had happened hours ago. Gavin just blankly stare at his lover who's amusement slowly diminish. After awhile of not getting an answer, [Name]'s lips formed into a frown as he looked at Gavin with worried [Eye color] eyes.
"Gavin?" [Name] softly called the brunet who slowly began to shake. Sitting up as his hands instantly found themselves on his face as he began to explain.
"There was so much fucking blood..." The brunet detective had quietly muttered to himself as he then continued. "S-so much fucking b-blood..." Gavin had muttered. [Name] furrowed his eyebrows as he looked at his lover confused and worried. He couldn't understand Gavin's quiet mumblings and he was curious on why his brunet lover started to act this way.
"What? Gavin I can't hear you." The [Hair color] haired had said as Gavin began to quietly mutter again which the male, once again, did not hear. "Gavin, please I need you to speak up a bit louder."
Again, the brunet merely let out quiet mumblings to himself which frankly, slowly made the [Hair color] haired man was a bit annoyed. What was Gavin so glum about? Did Hank piss him off again?
Sighing, [Name] tried again. "Gavin, can't you speak lo--"
"THERE WAS SO MUCH FUCKING BLOOD OKAY?!?"
The brunet had snapped as he glared at his [Hair color] haired lover who seemed to be surprised from his outburst. Despite the guilt he felt on it, Gavin couldn't stop himself but let out all the pent up emotions of the day take over his thinking. "There was a fucking robbery and they left nothing but a fucking corpse of a fourteen year old boy with a bullet wound in his fucking head and a four year old girl who's skull was fucking cracked open!" Gavin had yelled as he felt the tears fell down his eyes.
"A fucking four year old [Name]! T-they fucking killed her without mercy unlike her older brother!" The brunet had shouted as his mind went back to the scene. The brunet almost vomit on seeing the young girl's corpse, face barely recognizable by her parents.
"She fucking died feeling the fucking pain of her head being bashed repeatedly on the fucking floor unlike her brother who was immediately fucking shot in the head! She fucking died suffering [Name]!" Gavin cried out to his lover. The corpses of the two too young children to die was so painful for the brunet detective. Especially the little girl's where she suffered greatly before death embraced her.
"S-she died p... painfully [Name]..." Gavin had quietly muttered as he sobbed. "S-she was too young... they were t-too young..."
[Name] could only hug his broken lover as Gavin clung onto him. Crying on his chest as the brunet had clutched his shirt. The anguished sobs of his lover made the [Hair color] haired male mutter things to comfort him.
"T... they d-didn't deserved t-this..." Gavin muyyered through his sobs as he felt his lover rubbed his back to soothe him. [Name] brought his lover closer to him as he muttered onto Gavin's neck, "I know love... I'm so sorry for you to witness this..."
"I-I couldn't e-even f... find t-the people who did this to t-them..." [Name] hugged Gavin tigher as he felt his lover shake in his arms. "Shhh, you will love. You'll find these fuckers and have them jailed..." Embracing the brunet tighter in his arms as he consoled Gavin.
More: good sleep
For the past few nights, the brunet haired male couldn't sleep. He felt a bit miserable each night he slept alone in their large bedroom without the comforting embrace and the warm body of his [Hair color] haired lover beside him. For three days or so, the [Hair color] haired man was too busy doing work and would often come home late, more so in around twelve or past two in the morning. It also doesn't help that the brunet male as that haunting scene of the case he had weeks ago was still fresh in his mind.
The brunet male let out a tired sigh as he looked at the empty space beside him where his suppose to be lover lay. Gently patting the empty space with his hand as he wished the other male was right beside him now. Gavin wanted his lover's arms wrapped around him as he get pulled closer in a warn embrace. The feeling of his [Hair color] haired lover just there, embracing him and always affectionately mutter sweet things to his ear that sometimes he felt embarrassed about. He missed [Name] dearly. But he couldn't do much but just imagine the male was there beside him.
After awhile of just mindlessly looking at the empty spot of the [Hair color] haired male, Gavin finally felt himself succumbed to the tiredness he had felt as he slept soundly. Not really noticing the door to their bedroom slowly opened for the very male he was waiting to come in.
[Name], the [Hair color] haired male had some small bags underneathe his eyes from the late shifts he was working through and despite how tired he felt, he softly smiled when he saw his brunet lover sleeping soundlessly on their shared bed.
Slowly, the man had unbuttoned his white dress shirt and putting it on an office chair they had in the room, he then proceed to take his black dress pants off and mindlessly kicked it on the floor. Going through his closet to find a grey sweatpants and a black wifebeater to wear, he then proceed to go over to sleep beside his lover.
[Name] wasn't surprised when as he laid down beside Gavin, the said man had immediately shifted and pressed himself on the [Hair color] haired man's side. The [Hair color] haired man couldn't help but smile softly as he watched his sleeping lover cuddle on him as he slowly wrapped his arms on the brunet, pressing a soft kiss on the male's head as he then closed his eyes. It didn't take long for sleep to take his conscience.
The two slept well that night as Gavin was in his lover's arms. Not a nightmare of that horrid case to be found.
More: adventures
Day offs were the best. That is where he and his [Name] could agree on, other than coffee is the best early in the morning. Gavin would spend his day off just laze around his and his lover's shared home, watch a horror movie and midlessly pet their furry baby, Donut. The fat orange tabby cat who they adopted when Gavin and [Name] moved in with each other and had decided to just sit on the house's back porch to enjoy the calm day a few years back.
Gavin was laying his head on [Name]'s lap. The [Hair color] haired man stroking and playing his brown locks. A donut in Gavin's hand as he ranted about a suspect on a case he had few days ago. Talking animatedly as [Name] looks down at him with ove in his eyes and a smile on his lips. Listening to Gavin talk and comment at times.
The two were having a peaceful time with each other when a meow was heard and before the brunet knew it, an orange blur passed by him and saw that it had took the donut in his hand. Gavin let out a cry as he immediately sat up, almost hitting his head with [Name]'s if the other man had not been startled and reeled back because of Gavin's cry and actions.
Gavin, having to sat back up and frantically tried to look at the culprit who took his donut. A bit enrage because it was his favorite one and was planning to hit whatever thing that took it-- only to see a few feet away from him and his lover was seating at, close to the fence was a tabby cat, consuming his donut.
After that, [Name] had caught the furry rascal and immediately fell inlove. The [Hair color] haired man silently pleading Gavin on taking care of the cat but the brunet didn't agreed. His reason was that the cat took his donut. His favorite and last donut.
The brunet male was ready to come inside and hopefully find another snack to eat but when he looked at [Name] who was holding the fat cat... he gaved up. He was stubborn and very against it.
Until the two-- [Name] and the cat-- pouted and gave him a pleading look. Both looks made the brunet cave in and that was when they officially had their first "baby".
A fat, lazy, furry, annoying baby who craves attention. Especially from the [Hair color] haired man. The detective swear that the cat gives him the smuggest look a cat can do when [Name] pets him and switch his attention from Gavin to Donut. Cooing and smothering the orange tabby cat with all the love and affection while Gavin silently fumed in rage as the cat-- a fucking cat had the audacity to look so smug when it looked at him while his own lover was cooing and showing affection to it.
That was where Gavin realize how much he loved yet also hated cats.
"I will call you Donut-- no [Name]. I will name this little shit rug right here. No. You forced me to adopt with this little asshole and I have the power to name him. Now, where was I? Right. I will call you Donut, because HOLY SHIT, I DO NOT FEEL LIKE SEEING YOUR DUMB SMUG LOOK ON YOUR FACE YOU FUCKING LITTLE ASSHOLE-- OH MY GOD! [NAME] LET'S THROW THIS ASSHOLE IN THE POOL!"
More: interesting conversation
It was a hot day and the two lovers stayed inside for it. Just lazying around. Gavin, again, had a day off and he just spended it with him and [Name] in the livingroom.
Gavin had taken on lounging himself on the coach and was playing away with Donut that was laying on his chest. Not really minding the tabby cat as he played with the cat's orange fur. This was one of the few occasions the cat actually lets him be affectionate to Gavin since the tabby cat mostly preferred [Name]'s attention.
Gavin's head laid on [Name]'s lap as the latter was reading on an old book. Paper books were rather rare nowadays and [Name] always loved them than the tablets. He felt like a child when he reads. Remembering back in his childhood where his parents would buy him books to read.
"Would it considered be incest if you fuck your own clone?" Gavin had abruptly said. Tone laced with boredom as he had continued to mindlessly run his fingers on Donut's fur. The cat purring, happy with the affection he was getting.
Gavin's comment made the [Hair color] haired almost choke on his spit as he had paused his reading and looked at the male.
Gavin giving him a unwavered determination on his face when he had looked at the male in the eye.
"What...?" [Name] asked, confused and rather perplexed with what his brunet lover had just said. Destroying the silence and making him ponder if Gavin finally lost his mind.
"Why... explain," the [Hair color] haired had sighed as he had placed a bookmark on the page he was reading and closed his book. Putting it down on the coffee table beside the couch as he returned to look at Gavin.
"Like... well... doesn't your clone carry your dna or some science bullshit? So, isn't that how incest works?" Gavin explained. Making some hand gestures that amuses [Name].
"Just... it is incest to fuck your clone!" Gavin had continued as he made made a face that seemed to be mix with anger and realization. "Wait... it is also kinda gay too, like, right?"
[Name] bit back a laugh threatening to leave his lips as he shake his head with Gavin rambling on about more about clones and if you would have sex with one.
"Gavin... you are gay," [Name] mused as the brunet detective send him an unamused glare when he had chuckled.
"Well, yeah I am shitlock. I am dating your dumb ass," retorded Gavin as the [Hair color] haired laughed. "What I mean is..." Gavin trailed off as he madly gestured something invisible that only seemed to see. It was amusing to [Name].
"Clones."
Leaning down toward's Gavin face, [Name] placed a soft kiss on the brunet's lips.
"Honestly, your adorable," mused [Name] as he parted and went back to his comfortable position on the couch as Gavin sputtered out incoherent words.
More: laughter
Gavin rolled his eyes as he saw [Name] play with Donut. The [Hair color] haired man and the orange tabby cat were on the floor. Donut was laying on his back, his tummy exposed to the [Hair color] haired man that [Name]'s [Skin color] hand would tickle the cat's tummy then raise it fast enough for the cat not to grabbed. [Name] laughing and enjoying his time with the feline as the cat was also enjoying aswell. Purring and meowing with content. This made Gavin a bit irritated.
"You pay more attention to that damn cat more than me," Gavin had grumbled out of a blue as he strutted towards the two as he then plopped down beside [Name] who didn't seemed to mind him.
"Oi," Gavin pouted when the [Hair color] haired man did not turn to greet him nor give a single glance to his person.
"[Name]," the brunet whine as the said man merely hummed as he played with the tabby cat. "[Name], talk to me," Gavin whine as he dragged the 'e' in the last word for higher annoyance.
"Yes, dear?" Hummed [Name] as he picked up Donut and raised it towards his eye level. The tabby cat looking at him in the eye and sticking his pink tongue. The cat's actions made [Name] chuckle as he nuzzled his nose towards the tabby cat's ones.
"Such a cute kitty you are," [Name] praised as Gavin let out a loud groan. "[Name] pay attention to me you dick," Gavin whined.
The said man did not do as what Gavin had whine which made the brunet huff in annoyance. After awhile of the [Hair color] haired cooing at the tabby cat. Gavin finally split.
"Give me the cat," the brunet had stated. [Name] seemed to pay attention now to what he says at the [Hair color] haired man turned his head away from Donut who meowed and looked at Gavin.
"What now?" Asked [Name].
"I said give me the damn cat," Gavin had commanded as he saw [Name] rolled his eyes but nevertheless, gaved the cat to the angry brunet. Placing the tabby cat gently on the brunet's hands as Gavin immediately raised it towards his eye level like [Name] did awhile ago and glared with the cat's eyes.
"You," Gavin started as Donut looked at him in eye with its own version of an annoyed glare. Clearly the cat was not hapoy to be taken away from his quality bonding tine with his [Hair color] haired owner.
"Fuck off you damn pussy-- he's fucking gay," Gavin had said.
Donut was an intelligent cat. Well, cats are more intelligent creatures that humans give them credit for. But Donut was really an intelligent one. He seemed to know what his brunet owner was saying and in return for Gavin's angry words. Donut hissed in Gavin's face and wiggled out from the brunet's hold.
Due to Donut's abruptly hissing and wiggling his body, he successfully got out of Gavin's hold which made the brunet yelp from the hissing. The tabby cat had landed in all fours as he then dashed back to [Name]. Leaping at the [Hair color] haired man's lap as the orange tabby cat then made himself comfortable there.
[Name] laughed at what he had just witnessed as he mindlessly patted the cat on his lap while he watched Gavin swear at everything.
"Mother fucking cat! Suck ass bitch like what the fuck that mother fucker--" and the curses go on and on and on that made the [Hair color] haired man laughed out more. Honestly, why was Gavin always like this? He doesn't know but he loves it.
Gavin let out a few more string of curses as he angrily glared at ther feline until he directed his glare at the laughing [Hair color] haired man. "Stop laughing dumbass," grumbled Gavin as [Name] rolled his eyes and chuckled.
"Sorry but Donut really do not like you," [Name] had said as he took a quick look at the purring cat on his lap. Gavin seemed to catch his words which caused the brunet to roll his eyes.
"You think?" Gavin sarcastically had said. The [Hair color] haired man merely sent him a grin.
It took a second for Gavin to realized [Name]'s words again.
"Did you just... you..." Gavin had said as he look at the other man who sent him a beaming smile.
"What? Cat got your tongue?" Gavin groaned at the joke his lover had said as he slapped his hand on his forehead. Despite it though, there was a smile on the brunet's lips.
"God, you are such a fucking dumbass," Gavin had said to the man as the other merely shrugged.
"You love this dumbass though," the [Hair color] haired commented as Gavin rolled his eyes but laughed.
"Dang right I do!" Beamed Gavin as the [Hair color] haired man shakes his head but softly smiled. Leaning towards the brunet and placed a soft kiss on Gavin's forehead.
"You are such a dork," [Name] softly said as Gavin sputtered out incoherent sentences with his surprise affection. Gavin's reaction made the [Hair color] haired man laugh again.
More: happy dances
Gavin groaned as he stiffly sat up straight. The brunet trying to fix the collar of his suit as he sent [Name] a glare when the man chuckled at his discomfort.
"Having a great time gents?" A voice piped up from behind them. Gavin didn't have to look to know it was one of his older sisters. Specifically, the one who wore a white wedding gown with a cheeky smile on her lips.
"I would if this would be fucking over," grumbled Gavin as [Name] elbowed him but sent the older female a charming smile.
"Oh course we do, Delilah," he said as Gavin rolled his eyes sister.
"When will this be over again?" Gavin asked as he saw his sister sent him a small glare but then pouted. His comment had made the [Hair color] haired man sitting beside him elbow him again. Making him grunt in pain.
"Fine, fine," grumbled Gavin. "I am having a blast with the part Del! Such a marvelous party it is, oh yes it very is!" The brunet sarcastically and dramatically had said as Delilah sent him another pout and turned to the [Hair color] haired man.
"Ugh, I'm so sorry you have to date his ass, [Name]," Delilah had said as the [Hair color] haired man shrugged.
"I'm sorry for myself too," [Name] commented which earned him an angry "hey!" from the brunet and a chuckle from the woman dressed in white.
"Anyways, off to mingle with the other guests now!" Delilah said with a clap of her hands. She send the two men smiles again and even ruffled Gavin's hair which gotten her some curses from the brunet. "Have fun you two!" She said as she walked away. Finding herself talking to another pair of people.
"Honestly," huffed Gavin as he crossed his arms on his chest. "She is still that annoying shithead of a sister," he had said.
[Name] only chuckled as he shakes his head. "You're still happy she's married though, right?"
"Not really," Gavin answered honestly which earned him a raised brow from the [Hair color] haired man. Not that he could see anyways. "I mean... that asshole better treat her right or I swear to God, he'll be framed for murder or some shit," sweared Gavin underneath his breath and the man beside him still caught it.
The [Hair color] haired merely shake his head and a fond smile on his lips as he looked at Gavin quietly grumbling uncomfortably in his seat. The two did wore some formal suits for it was Delilah's wedding. Gavin being a sibling is definitely invited while [Name] was his plus one and date. The two, of course, being lovers and all.
It was quiet-- save from the occasional grumblings from the brunet-- as two merely minded their business. Already finished eating the food that was catered by the wedding caterers and all.
After awhile, the large speakers in the area began to boom some songs. A song appropriate for a slowl dance in fact and it made Gavi perked up for a bit as he looked around. Watching how Delilah and her now-husband dancing in the middle and then some few guests aswell.
[Name] seemed to noticed his gaze on the dancers as he softly smiled. Standing up from his seat, the [Hair color] haired walked around his seat as he then offered his hand to Gavin who had looked at him with a raised brow.
"Care for a dance?" [Name] said with a charming smile that made Gavin roll his eyes but nevertheless, took the offer with his own grin.
"Let's show these motherfuckers how dancing is!" Gavin had said as he heard [Name] chuckle and helped him stand up from his seat. With hands holding, the [Hair color] haired man lead them both to the dance floor. With that, the two faced each other and placed their hands in the right order. Gavin placing one of his hand on [Name]'s shoulder while the other man placed a hand on his hips. The other hand holding each other as they looked one another in the eye. And they danced.
"You know, I thought you'd refused for a dance," [Name] confessed as Gavin sent him a small glare.
"I won't back down from this," muttered Gavin. Hearing his comment made [Name] smile.
"Well, that's good to hear... because I want to dance this song to with you," the [Hair color] had said with a smile as the bruney rolled his eyes yet a grin on his lips.
"Stop being sappy you dick," commented the brunet with a smile as [Name] laughed.
"I will if you change your last name to mine," came the retort as Gavin took a second to process what the other had said while [Name] smiled.
"Wait... did... did you just... what?" Gavin sputtered out as [Name] twirled him.
"Let's just enjoy this dance, alright?" The [Hair color] haired man innocently had said as he gave Gavin a smile. Gavin seemed to think for a second but nodded. A grin on his lips.
"You better come and proposed when I'm in the middle of my damn sappy congratulations to Delilah's marriage or so help me, I wont say yes," Gavin joked as the [Hair color] haired laughed at it.
"And get the attention off the newly wed? How evil," the [Hair color] haired man teased as Gavin rolled his eyes but smiled.
"Fuck them, I am an attention hoe and it's my revenge for making the two of us come here," Gavin replied as he felt [Name]'s hand squeezed their intertwined ones. "We could have fucked by this time god damn it."
"Let's see, shall we dear?" [Name] said as he spun Gavin around again. Then bringing the brunet close as the song slowly ended.
"Also, my answer is fuck yes," [Name] smiled at Gavin's words.
"That's great to hear."

The hospital receptionist’s face fell when she caught sight of Jackson walking in. Her face twisted in pity, but the boisterous arrival didn’t seem to notice.
“Good morning, Yeeun-ssi!” He greeted cheerfully, sliding his visitor’s pass across the front desk. “I ran late yesterday so I couldn’t make it.”
Yeeun seemed to be holding in an ocean of sorrow as she pushed the card back to him. “I’m sorry, sir.”
Jackson’s eyes narrowed in confusion. “What do you mean, sorry? For wh-“ He fell silent, gazing at Yeeun, who couldn’t seem to meet his eyes. “No,” he breathed out. “That can’t be.”
“I tried calling you yesterday, sir,” she pleaded. “If only it was just a day later…” She shook her head sadly. Fate was cruel.
Could I have said goodbye? Jackson thought.
“How did he…?”
“They…they pulled the plug.”

You opened your eyes to the jarring sound of your alarm, wishing more than anything else that you were dreaming and it wasn’t yet morning. But no. When did things ever go your way? Blindly reaching out, you smashed the snooze button.
Groaning, you pushed away covers that weren’t even there. In the heat, you had kicked off the thin blanket you draped over yourself anyway—again.
It was only morning, but you could already feel the humidity beginning to cling to your skin. How you wished you could fall back onto the mattress and drift off. The silence of the apartment reminded you of another thing, however—the poster you had drawn up the previous night: an advertisement for a flatmate. You really needed some noise and movement to distract you, especially after last month. Why did Dahyun have to move out?
The alarm began beeping again.
You had to get to work.
.
Saturdays at the library were always a sort of hassle. There were more children and their misinformed parents over the weekend than any other day. Of course there were some absolute darlings who loved to read and could sit for hours on end with their noses in a book or two. But on the other hand…
You sighed as you pushed open the door of the public library, eyes adjusting to the dim light. Before you could make it to the counter where you would be stationed for the day, you were stopped abruptly by a rather raucous child dashing across your path.
…On the other hand, those darlings always had siblings that had no interest in developing the skill of reading at all. Little rascals who came there only by force and chose to make as much noise as they could get away with.
You pursed your lips, staring distastefully at the runaway before walking swiftly over to the bulletin board. Slipping the notice for a flatmate out of your pocket, you pinned it to the board, then plopped down at the counter, depositing your backpack under the desk.
“Good morning, Y/N!” your co-worker Daniel chirped.
“Good morning, Daniel,” you replied dully, scooting your chair subtly away from him. You really didn’t have his energy at the moment. You loved the guy, but it was a little grieving to hear about his girlfriend twenty-four seven. To your relief, someone approached him at that moment, pulling his attention off of you.
There were quite the number of high schoolers despite it being a weekend, you noticed. Ah. There’s a reading room that the high schoolers are doing today, huh?  Your gaze swept around the seating area to your left. A familiar face caught your eye.
What’s Jinyoung sunbae doing over here? Is he reading to the kids, too? He was sitting with someone you couldn’t see because their back was to you. They seemed to be in some sort of deep discussion.  You weren’t worried. Anyone who came to the library with Park Jinyoung was sure to be just as much of a bookworm.
“Y/N!” You jumped at your supervisor’s voice, tearing your eyes away from your senior and looking up. Your supervisor tilted her head toward a cart full of books. “Be a dear and put these back, won’t you? I’ll man the desk for a bit.”
You bit back a curse, choosing instead to nod and leap up. You’d have to dodge some more kids but at least you could get away from Daniel’s overwhelming energy and rude ‘I-have-a-late-fee-but-I-have-no-intention-of-paying-it-off-quietly-I’d-rather-annoy-you-for-a-solid-ten-minutes-before-doing-just-that’ people.
.
“Jackson, I swear to every god there is, if you don’t find a place to live by the end of the weekend, I’m kicking you out. You can sleep on the streets.” Jackson flinched a little at Jinyoung’s sharp threat, but still pouted to lessen the impact—in vain; Jinyoung hadn’t even glanced up from his book to say all that. Some people didn’t even need eye contact to be intimidating.
“In this heat? Why, Jinyoungieee,” Jackson whined, dragging out his name. No effect. Park gae didn’t move. “Where will I go?”
“If you hadn’t dropped out, you could be staying at the dorms—legally,” Jinyoung remarked. “I’m not risking any more trouble sneaking you in.” Before Jackson could whine his name again, he continued. “Where’s JB hyung? Aren’t you always with him?”
Jackson chewed on the inside of his cheek, wondering how much he should tell Jinyoungie—or rather, wondering how much he already knew. “Uhh…we kinda stopped talking to each other for a while…”
This made Jinyoung look up from the page he was reading, eyes narrowing. “You fought?”
Jackson twitched his shoulders. “Not exactly. Just…” Thankfully, Jinyoung didn’t force him to elaborate, only shooting him a look that said he would definitely be interrogated about it later. “And then hyung went to Japan, remember?”
“But he came back.” Jinyoung was biting his lip in confusion. Funny how anything related to JB hyung made him a million times more attentive.
“He did. But…”
“Now you feel awkward going and begging for living space when you haven’t contacted him in so long?”
Jackson scratched the back of his neck. How the heck does Jinyoungie talk so accurately? “Sure. You could put it that way.”
Jinyoung sighed, sitting up and closing his book. “Do you really think JB hyung feels that way? I know he’s scary when he’s mad, but he still cares about you, hyung. Go and see him. It’ll be fine.”
“But hyung’s so busy and he doesn’t have that much room…and he has his cats…”
Jinyoung tilted his head, thinking. “Well. That’s true. Then what are you going to do?” Jackson could only shrug in defeat, staring around the library without seeing what he was looking at—a staff member putting books back on the shelves…kids running around…Jinyoungie picking at the corner of his book mindlessly…general peace.
Wordlessly, Jinyoung stood to check out the book he had been reading. Jackson followed.
“Hello again, Jinyoung hyung!” the boy at the counter said brightly.
“Hey, Daniel. How are your classes going?”
Jackson totally zoned out on the interaction between the two. Maybe I shouldn’t have dropped out in the first place, he thought. He hadn’t realized how deeply he’d gone imagining the life he could have led until he felt Jinyoung smacking his arm hard.
“Jackson!” he exclaimed, more forcefully, pointing to something. The bulletin board. More specifically, an ad pinned to the board.
An ad for a flatmate. Not too far from here.
“Seems like your lucky day, huh?” Jinyoung clapped him on the shoulder, taking a picture of it at the same time. “Go there today. You really don’t have much of an option.”
Jackson groaned.
“Fine.”
-
The doorbell ringing brought you out of your stupor. Hastily placing the photograph back on your bedside table and wiping your face off with a nearby towel, you made your way to the front door.
Now, you had seen nearly everyone who came by your place looking absolutely wrecked, but it still took you aback every time. You eyed the panting young man who stood outside your door in pity. Perhaps he thought he would have a few more seconds to catch his breath. You wondered how long he had been standing there before he rang the bell.
Fuck the standard questions. “Are you okay?”
He raised a hand and nodded, drawing one last breath and stabling himself. “Yeah. I’m good.”
“It’s quite a climb, isn’t it?”
He nodded. A beat passed in silence and then he seemed to remember why exactly he had rung your bell. “Ah!” he exclaimed, pulling out his phone. “Is this…?”
He turned it around, showing you the screen. You squinted at it, taking the phone in your hand. It was a chat in which someone had sent him the picture of your poster and a message under it—‘pls make a good impression for once’. You pressed your lips together to stifle your amusement—and then you saw the contact who had sent him the text.
“JYP?” You yelped, looking at the man in front of you in awe. “You know JYP?” He snatched his phone back in embarrassment.
“I—That’s a friend,” he said hastily. “He goes to SIU. I just call him that because he has the same name.”
That sounded familiar. “Wait, Park Jinyoung? You’re friends with him?”
Jackson hesitated. “Yeah…you know him?”
You smiled. “I go to SIU, too. He’s my senior. Who doesn’t know him?”
“Oh…that’s cool!” he replied, his face brightening. “I’ll definitely bring him around—if you accept me as your flatmate?”
Ah, so that’s what’s happening here. You crossed your arms, fighting a smile. “Are you already bribing me? I can’t believe you. I already have half a mind to not let you live here.”
His smile fell. “What? Whyy?” He didn’t hide the whine that escaped him.
Aw, that’s cute. “I’m kidding. If you’re a friend of Jinyoung sunbae, I’m guessing you’re a good guy.”
He frowned. “I’m sure that should be the other way, but it’s fine. I’m not arguing. Kinda desperate, here. Do you want me to, like, call Jinyoungie for you? To “affirm my credibility” or whatever?” He made air quotations.
You laughed it off, gesturing that he didn’t need to. He seems like a good guy. Maybe I won’t have to search any longer.
“I’m Jackson, by the way,” he suddenly spoke, looking sheepish. “Forgot to introduce myself.”
“Ah. I’m Y/N. And I’m desperate, too.” You sighed, blowing your hair off your face. “Do you know how glad I am that I rejected the guy who showed up before you? What a douchebag.”
A look of concern flashed across his face. “Someone came before me? Did he, like, try to hurt you or something? You’re okay?”
And he’s already concerned about me. I really really hope he doesn’t end up an asshole.
“I’m perfectly fine. Let’s talk splitting rent.”
.
“That’s the last of it,” Jackson announced.
You stood aside as his friend (Namjoon, was it?) dumped the two boxes he was carrying onto the floor, utterly exhausted. You couldn’t blame him. The two had been walking up and down the four flights of stairs with Jackson’s possessions all morning. You had helped, of course. But they weren’t used to climbing four floors.
“That better be the last, you jerk,” Namjoon spat. “When you said, ‘let’s hang out’, I didn’t think you meant this.” He wiped the sweat off his brow with his sleeve.
“I’ll pay you back for this, man.” Jackson patted his shoulder. “Let me buy you meat tonight.” His friend looked suspiciously at him but relented. You bowed him out.
To be honest, you hadn’t realized how short Jackson was compared to a lot of other people until Namjoon was standing beside him. Although you supposed Namjoon was just a giant. But still.
“I’m so tired,” Jackson whined, flopping down onto his mattress.
“Good,” you retorted, kneeling down to face him. “When you’re tired, you listen better. There is a rule in this household: you’re not allowed in my room.”
Jackson gasped, exaggerating his reaction. “Are you a dictator now? Rules? Will I be chucked into jail if I don’t obey? Do I have to go into hiding?”
You rolled your eyes. “I literally only said you weren’t allowed in my room at any cost. Isn’t that a reasonable request? You can make your own rules, too. No one’s stopping you.”
“Nah.” He shrugged. “You can come into my room, I don’t really mind. Nothing in here anyway.” He turned his eyes on you, narrowing them. “What are you hiding? Please don’t tell me you’re harbouring a fugitive in there.”
“Oh my gosh, no.” You stood up again. “I just want my privacy. My old flatmate respected it, so I expect you to as well. Okay? I’ll respect yours if you respect mine.”
He nodded. “I know. I’m just kidding. Are you always so uptight?” You frowned at the goofy expression on his face. “I promise I won’t go into your room.” He seemed sincere enough.
Maybe he wouldn’t be so bad…
.
“JACKSON!” you shouted, pounding on the wall that divided your bedroom from his. “KEEP IT THE FUCK DOWN!” If the volume went down at all, you couldn’t tell. Weary from lack of sleep for the past week or so, you rolled over and squinted at the time on your phone.
“Three thirty-four,” you muttered furiously. “THREE THIRTY-FOUR!”
And then the doorbell rang. And it rang again.
“Nobody ever does anything in this house,” you said loudly while forcing yourself up off the bed, half-hoping Jackson would hear it. But of course he wouldn’t. The amount of noise that was emanating from his room made sure of that.
The ringing became quite insistent and when you yanked the door open, wondering who on earth it wouldn’t be, you came face to face with Mr. Ok, the next-door neighbor. A tall man in his thirties, you had always found him quite the character—and you would’ve thought his pajamas and bedhead looked cute if it wasn’t for the expression of pure murder on his face.
“Oh…Mr. Ok,” you greeted with a hesitant bow.
“What the bloody hell is going on here?” he nearly spat, hands balling into fists that you knew he wouldn’t hesitate to use if he snapped. “Don’t you know we’re all trying to sleep?”
You winced. “I’m so sorry, Mr. Ok, I’ve been trying to get Jackson to quiet down for a while, but he’s not listening—“
“Where is he?” He growled, stepping inside without invitation. You jumped at the chance of getting Mr. Ok himself to threaten Jackson. You led him gleefully to your flatmate’s door. After pounding on it for a solid minute, in which the noise levels dropped completely, the door opened to reveal Jackson lazily yawning—clearly expecting you to be standing there. His features rapidly rearranged themselves to a politer expression.
“Ah, hyung!” he exclaimed. “What a surprise!”
Hyung? you questioned wordlessly. Since when has he become so chummy with Mr. Ok?
“Surprise, huh?” Mr. Ok hissed, eyes daggers. “What the hell are you doing, making so much noise?” It seemed to be rhetorical, because he didn’t give Jackson a chance to answer. “I have to get up at six, as do many people in this establishment. A lot of them have to go to work, or school, and a lot of them have families to take care of. I’m aware you have no such commitments—perks of being unemployed, I suppose—“ Jackson’s face twisted slightly. “—but that doesn’t mean you’re allowed to do whatever you want. When you live in close proximity with a lot of people, you have to learn to be considerate of others. Forget others, you live with a flatmate. At least be considerate to them!”
Jackson didn’t answer. You assumed he was still stinging over the ‘unemployed’ comment.
Mr. Ok didn’t even try to soothe his harsh words before he stormed out, slamming the door behind him. He must have been tolerating it for longer than he let on.
You crossed your arms and smiled smugly at your flatmate. “I hope you’ve learned your lesson.”
And just like that, his meek façade vanished, to be replaced by a pout. “But I wanted to finish the drama! I need the theatre effect to watch it, otherwise it’s just boring!”
You threw your hands up in the air and groaned, deciding it would be better for your health to just lock the door and then yourself in your bedroom.
Jackson was a mistake. One that you sorely regretted.
In the barely two months that you two began living together, you had learned one thing: Jackson was a force that was very much unstoppable. You would get burned if you so much as dared to try.
You could make a list—hell, you could write a book about the things he did that pissed you off. Was it your problem? Maybe. But it was clear enough that Jackson had certainly never learned how to adjust with people who weren’t on the same energy level as him.
He was loud. Point made. He was boisterous, always moving around, practically bouncing from room to room. You often restrained from asking him what gave him the right to look so damn happy. Perhaps you were just jealous. Your classes had begun again, and while you were working your ass off and burning the midnight oil just to keep your grades up, Mr. Unemployed seemed to be having the time of his life. Where did he even get the money to pay his rent off?
More than once, or even eight times, you had walked into the bathroom to find water literally everywhere—on the toilet seat, around the sink, on the floor, even on the walls. You couldn’t possibly imagine what he was even doing that made the entire damn place wet. He played music at night, loudly, with no regard for your wellbeing and the neighbours’. The nights he came home tipsy were even worse. And now he was watching a drama, it seemed. In full theatre mode.
The one rule you had—of him not being allowed to enter your room—had now expanded into a full three-page document, taped to the wall between your bedrooms.
You remembered how concerned he was about making a good impression in the first couple of weeks. He had even brought his friend Park Jinyoung around to meet you, as promised. Now you understood the pity in his eyes that day. He’d known things would get worse. You still got embarrassed when he sought you out in the cafeteria to ask how you were and if Jackson was giving you a hard time.
Maybe you should take Jinyoung sunbae up on that offer he made.
.
The breaking point came soon after.
It was a Thursday night and you’d just finished an essay due the day after, one that you’d been working on for the past week. So you were already running on barely three hours on sleep a day. It was past midnight, and Jackson still wasn’t home. He was probably lying drunk somewhere. As much as you wished you could just go to sleep and leave him to his own devices, you knew damn well that if he did show up, he would likely leave the door wide open and drool all over the couch.
You weren’t about to get robbed just because of Jackson’s bad decisions.
After calling him yet again and hearing no dial tone, you tossed your phone onto the dining table and waited with your head in your arms.
.
“I’m not drunk, Markipooh!” A loud exclamation, followed by someone shushing the voice sounded outside your door.
You swung it open, looking pissed enough for Mark—Jackson’s go-to designated driver and body hauler—to look ashamed.
“I’m sorry,” he said quietly. “You know I can’t control Jackson.”
“I’m not drunk, though?” Said man slurred, collapsing into a chair.
“Thanks, Mark.” You sighed bitterly. “Go home.”
As the door closed, Jackson lifted his head and repeated, “I’m not drunk, though.”
“Oh, really?” you snapped, raising your voice. “Then listen to this: I’m not your fucking servant or something, just waiting for my master to come home so I can attend to you! I’m a student and I have a shit ton of work to do and just because you are so useless you can’t find a job doesn’t mean I have to suffer for it!”
Fury dashed across his face. Seizing the first thing he saw on the table, he threw it with all his might at the wall behind you, where it shattered and fell sadly to the floor. You tensed, fear coursing through you, trembling as he came closer.
“Fucking shut up, I already have a headache.”
And then he was gone, leaving behind nothing but the stench of alcohol. His door slammed.
Silence.
You slid to the floor, stunned. How could things have gone so wrong?
With shaking hands and a pounding heart, you felt around for your phone. The screen was cracked beyond repair, glass scattered all around you. What did you expect, that it would survive being thrown against a wall with Jackson’s muscle?
Enough, you decided. Enough was enough. He has to go.
And if you cried yourself to sleep that night against the dining room wall, nobody had to know.
-
“Y/N!”
You didn’t even think that anyone would be actually calling your name. So you didn’t stop. The entire day had you fuming internally, and you didn’t think anyone deserved to hear your outburst.
“Y/N!”
You halted. Normally you would be absorbed in your phone, but today you didn’t have it. Of course you didn’t. After last night, you didn’t even think it was safe to. You turned when you sensed the person—what did you mean, person, of course it was Park Jinyoung—catch up to you. If you were in your right mind at the moment, you might be a mildly blushing mess. Who wouldn’t be? It was Park fucking Jinyoung. But now? You were five point three centimeters from losing your temper completely and you couldn’t help but resent him for being friendly with you now when two months ago, he didn’t know your name, despite being your senior.
You sighed, turning around to face him. “Yes, sunbae?”
If he was taken aback by your slight rudeness, he didn’t show it. “I tried calling Jackson yesterday and this morning, and he didn’t pick up. He okay?”
You pursed your lips. “I couldn’t care less about Jackson, sunbaenim. You know my address, if you’re so concerned, why don’t you go and see how he is?” You scoffed and made to turn away, but Jinyoung caught your arm.
“Whoa, what’s with the attitude?” He teased, pulling you along with him down the hall and into the student council’s meeting room, currently empty. “You okay? What did he do?”
A little comforted that he immediately assumed his friend did something wrong, you slumped your shoulders. “A lot happened.”
“Clearly.” He leaned against the president’s desk and folded his arms. You didn’t know if he was analyzing you or not. Your face flushed under his gaze.
“He went out and came back drunk beyond words,” you explained, irritated at the memory. “And maybe I shouldn’t have, but I yelled at him saying that I wasn’t his servant to wait or clean up after him and—” you broke off, hesitating. “I might have told him off for not having a job.”
Jinyoung winced. “He’s pretty touchy about that.”
“Yeah, I figured.” You let out a bitter sigh. “He smashed my phone.”
“Wait, what?” Jinyoung lifted himself off the desk, looking at you in disbelief. “He—he smashed your phone? Jackson Wang?” You nodded, spreading your arms out.
“That’s why I don’t have it today. The screen shattered.”
Jinyoung looked genuinely disturbed. “It’s not like Jackson to lose his temper like that.”
You didn’t want excuses made for him, even if he had been drunk. “Oh, really? Pray, do tell.”
“Y/N—”
“Why? What did I do? Am I wrong?” If your eyes were daggers, Jinyoung would be bleeding now. “Tell me, sunbaenim. Am I just a maid to him?” You bit the inside of your cheek and spoke the words you had been contemplating all night. “I want to say yes to your offer, but he’s going to get kicked out soon. The nieghbours are already blacklisting him. If they tell him to leave, I won’t be able to hold any ground by myself.”
He seemed at a loss for words, appalled by both Jackson’s and your behavior. “Listen, I’ll talk to him, okay?” He checked his watch. “You should get to class.”
What’s the point? You thought, but conceded anyway. Just before you closed the door, you heard him call your name.
“And no, Y/N,” he said, a tight smile on his lips, “you’re not wrong. Give me your phone number.”
-
You refused to return home that day, choosing to stay all night in the library—until Jinyoung met up with you and nearly begged you to go back to your apartment.
“I’ve talked to him,” he had said, “and he’s really sorry about everything that happened last night. Truth be told, he doesn’t remember some of it, but anyway, he’s sorry. Hear him out.”
You couldn’t believe you were being forced to accept whatever pathetic apology your roommate was going to give you—just because he was your roommate and you had to live with him. It just wasn’t fair.
But when you stepped in through the door, the first thing that registered was the aroma wafting to you—the smell of food. Curious, you peered around the door and saw the little table beautifully set, dishes spread out all over it. And behind them all, obediently sitting on a chair, was Jackson. Guilty smile on his face, but still.
So this is his apology, you thought, closing the door and kicking off your shoes. A food bribe.
You pursed your lips as you reluctantly approached him, slinging your bag over the back of another chair. You crossed your arms. “What’s all this?”
He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, diverting his gaze from your harsh stare. “I…uh, I wanted to apologize for the stuff I did…last night.” He pressed his lips together. “For breaking your phone and yelling at you and...stuff.” From under the table, he brought out a small box you instantly recognized as one a phone came in. “I got you a new one.”
Your lips parted in surprise. “You—wait, you got me a new phone?” Your tone did not hide your disbelief at all. “But…that’s expensive!”
“It’s my fault that yours is broken beyond repair,” he explained. “I’m obliged to do this.”
You couldn’t speak for a moment. “But…where did you get the money? I didn’t think—“
“Borrowed it from my mom,” he admitted, cheeks turning red. “I got an earful, but I had to do what I had to do.” He looked up at you pleadingly. “I’m really sorry for everything. I don’t usually lose my temper like that, I guess I was just frustrated—that’s no excuse,” he cleared hastily. “I just…I’m sorry.” He gestured to the food on the table. “I got your favourites?”
You didn’t know what to think. Jackson stuck his bottom lip out in a pout.
Honestly, why does Wang look like a kicked puppy when he’s sad?
“I don’t forgive you,” you said firmly. His face fell. “But I do accept your apology.” Ignoring the sigh of relief that he let out, you sat down at the table.
“That’s good enough for now.”
“And I should apologize too,” you remarked, picking up your chopsticks. “I said some harsh things to you yesterday.”
Jackson waved it off. “No. You were right and I just didn’t want to admit it.” He sighed deeply. “I’ve started looking for a job.”
“That’s great, Jackson.” Your smile was genuine now. Looking reassured, your flatmate mimicked you and picked up his own utensils. “I’m glad.”
Jinyoung sunbae, I guess I won’t have to take up your offer after all.
.
“Yah, who the hell are you texting nowadays?”
You heard the whining voice of your flatmate before you saw him. Barely glancing up from your phone, you asked, “What happened, Jackson?”
He scoffed. “See? You’re not even looking at me when you say that. You’re always tapping away on your phone like I don’t exist here! Pay attention to me!” You let out a startled yelp when he plopped his heavy body onto your side. “I don’t think you’ve said a full two sentences to me in the past week.” When you ignored him, angling your screen away, he felt suspicious. “Who are you texting—!”
“Yah!” You attempted to grab your phone back from him in vain. Jackson suddenly sat up.
“Jinyoung sunbae?!” he shrieked. “As in my friend Park Jinyoung?” He held your phone out of reach with one hand and used his free arm to wrestle yours to the sofa seat. “What the hell are you even texting him for?”
“He’s not only your friend, Jackson,” you whined, squirming in his grasp. “He’s really nice to me at university, why can’t I talk to him? He’s my senior, too.”
You made noises of protest as he began to scroll through the messages the two of you had exchanged. Before long, he was spluttering in fury.
“What is this?” He yelped. “Hey Y/N do you want to meet up for coffee? Since when has Jin—actually never mind, since when have you two been that close?” He tossed you your phone and you took it back gratefully. “So this is why Jinyoung says he’s too busy to get food nowadays, huh?” Heat crept up your cheeks. “Are you actually blushing right now?” He howled. “Okay, I can’t take this anymore!”
Your phone began to ring. Both of your heads turned to it.
On the screen was a stupid photo of his friend and the name Jinyoung sunbae.
“Don’t you dare answer that,” Jackson said lowly.
“You’re not the boss of me,” you spat in return, sliding the button to answer, pressing the speaker button simultaneously. “Hello, Jinyoung!”
“Hey, Y/N, what’s up?” came his voice from the speaker. “Are you busy? You didn’t answer my message.”
You giggled at the expression on Jackson’s face. “No, my flatmate was just being annoying.”
“Ah, Jackson? Is he there? Wait, is this on speaker?”
“Yah, Jinyoungie!” Jackson burst out, betrayal written all over his face. “Why are you ignoring me for Y/N? This isn’t fair; you were my friend first!”
“Are you serious right now, Jackson?” Jinyoung’s voice was amused. “I assumed you would be tired and busy from work. I didn’t want to bother you.”
“But what about Wang gae Park gae?” he grouched.
“Wang what?” You looked from the phone to Jackson.
“Never mind about that, Y/N,” Jinyoung interjected hastily. “You’re coming, right?”
“Coming where?” A growl emanated from your flatmate.
“Yeah, sunbae, I’ll be there soon.” With words of parting, you hung up the call.
“Where are you going with him?” Jackson repeated.
“I don’t see how that’s any of your business.” You stood up, reaching for your backpack.
“Why can’t you tell me? I thought I was your flatmate, shouldn’t I be worried? What if you don’t come back?”
You burst out laughing. “Why would I not come back? Don’t you trust your own friend?” He opened his mouth to protest, but you were halfway out the door. “See you later, Jacks!”
-
“You should have seen his face!” you told Jinyoung, laughing along with him at the memory. “Has he always been like that?”
“He’s jealous.” Jinyoung shrugged.
“Hmm. Yeah. He really likes you, you know.” You pointed your pencil at him. “Why do you reject him when he asks you to get food? It’s like stealing candy from a puppy.”
“He likes me?” He retorted incredulously. “The heck? It’s me he’s jealous of.”
It was your turn to be puzzled. “What do you mean? He was literally whining about him being your friend first and that I was stealing you away from him.”
Jinyoung guffawed into the crook of his arm. “Okay, if you don’t believe me, there’s nothing I can do about it.” He jabbed his pen at your textbook. “What are guys learning in class now?”
-
Jackson was bored. His best friend had ditched him for his flatmate. And vice versa, he supposed. How long could someone flop around on a bed and flick a fidget spinner around? He almost wished he had to go in for work today. Even washing dishes sounded better than what he was doing at the moment.
He groaned into his pillow. Why has everyone forsaken me? Honestly Jackson just get your ass up and do something other than faceplanting into the bed.
Pushing himself off the mattress, he stumbled to his feet, still flicking the spinner around. His stomach rumbled. Food,he thought blearily, banging against the doorframe on his way out of the room. “Ow! Fu—whoa, no!” The fidget spinner escaped his grasp and hit the floor sharply, skidding under the door adjacent to his, despite his futile attempts to intercept it with his foot. “Damn!” He stared at the door—Y/N’s door—that he had been forbidden to enter at any time, in any situation. To prove it, there was even a piece of paper stuck to the door announcing the same.
Absently, he laid his palm on the handle, but didn’t turn it. “It’s just a fidget spinner; can’t I just open it real quick, grab it and shut it again? That should be okay, right? I won’t look around.” He chewed his lip, second guessing himself. “Ah, fuck it, I’m practically Y/N’s boyfriend already. There aren’t any secrets to hide.”
Shrugging his shoulders, he turned the handle, eyes trained to the ground.
The spinner was lying on the ground next to a nightstand. Determinedly not looking around the room, Jackson bent to retrieve the damn thing.
His mistake was looking up as he straightened himself.
His eyes fell on the nightstand. Or rather, the photo framed on it.
His breath hitched. He thought his heart might have stopped beating for a moment.
Within the four wooden pieces stood Y/N. Much younger than now; the photo was clearly old. But Jackson’s eyes were on the young boy standing right beside Y/N.
The fidget spinner clattered to the floor again.
“Hyung!”
A car screeching. The sound of an impending accident, lifelong scars.
Screams.
Was that glass shattering? Or dreams?
Commotion. And cries for a person nobody knew.
“HYUNG!”
Jackson gasped, stumbling back a step, the force the picture exerted too strong for him to handle. His plastic toy dug into his heel and he cursed, the pain momentarily diverting his attention from his pounding heart.
Picking up the spinner, he choked out a ‘this can’t be happening’ before darting out of the room and slamming the door behind him.
He needed air.
What is going on? This can’t be possible.
Does Y/N know that I…no. That can’t be. It just can’t be!
Y/N? Of all people? Y/N wouldn’t do that…
Right?
.
Jackson wasn’t home when you got back.
Good for him, you thought. He’s learned to get out of the house by himself.
You stretched, glad to be back inside away from the heat outside. It was refreshingly cold inside…unsettlingly so. Why was it cold? Or were you imagining it?
Wondering if Jackson had become thoughtful enough to cook, you ventured into the kitchen, but then clicked your tongue disappointedly on seeing everything as you left it. Of course he hadn’t.
Sometime during your attempt at making pasta, the door opened.
“Jackson?” you called out, hoping it was him.
“Yeah?”
“You like pasta, right? Come here and help me.”
You were too occupied with the nearly burning food to notice Jackson’s heartbroken expression, but you did see that he was spacing out really bad. It wasn’t like him to not be bursting into speech animatedly at all times.
“Jackson?” you called for the fourth time, waving a spare hand in front of his face. He jolted.
“Ah, yeah.” He rubbed his eyes. “Shit, sorry. What was that?”
“Could you get some water?” He nodded absently before trudging off to carry out his task. You squinted at him. “Something wrong?” He quickly shook his head. But you knew Jackson enough to know that he was very, very bad at hiding his emotions. “Don’t lie, Jacks. I can see it in your face. What happened?”
He shrugged, his confusion disappearing almost entirely. “I—uh, I sorta did something, but I won’t tell you because you’ll get mad at me.”
You tilted your head. “What did you do?”
He shook his head and pouted, some of the playfulness returning. “You’ll get mad at me.”
“I promise I won’t.”
Jackson looked at you hard, for a moment or two, then cast his gaze to the floor. “I went into your room today.”
Those words dropped into your head like a bomb. “You what?” You let the fork clatter to the countertop, nearly lunging at him. He caught your arms just in time and held you away from him.
“You said you wouldn’t get mad!”
You huffed loudly, yanking your arms from his grip. “And you said you wouldn’t go inside!”
He held out his hands, blocking you from coming nearer. “It was an accident! My fidget spinner went under your door!”
You scoffed, turning back to the pot on the stove and wishing your room wasn’t a mess. “Still.” All you could think of were the paintings on the walls and the photos. Had he seen them? Would he ask?
“Hmm.” The two of you lapsed into silence for a while. Neither spoke until the pasta was ready and you divided it between the two of you. You sensed that Jackson was itching to say something, but, coward as you were, you weren’t sure you wanted to hear it.
“Um. Y/N?”
You looked up from your bowl, chopsticks faltering. “Yeah?”
He cleared his throat. “Uh, I know I shouldn’t have, but I couldn’t help but notice…that picture on your night stand…”
You froze, quickly setting your chopsticks down to hide your trembling fingers.
“Who is that?”
.
Jackson knew a more accurate question would be ‘Who was that?’ but he didn’t dare to ask. You didn’t know who he was. He hadn’t known who you were until this afternoon.
It hurt him. It hurt him to ask about the boy in the photo so casually, as if nothing had ever happened to him, as if one day he would get to see him again. He knew it would hurt you too. But he had no choice. He couldn’t risk the suspicion that he would rouse. You would demand answers. You would hate him for lying, for hiding who he was and what he had been doing.
He stared guiltily at you, where you sat across from him, clutching the table so hard your knuckles turned pale.
“Does—does it matter that you know who it is?” you choked out, evidently trying not to cry.
Jackson abandoned his own chopsticks and reached out to take your shaking hand in his. “It does. It does to me.”
You nodded, eyes red, staring determinedly anywhere but his face. “That’s…Hanyu. My baby cousin.” He inclined his head, encouraging you to tell him more. Even though he already knew it all. “He stayed in the city in the dorms—you know SOPA?”
“Yeah, of course.”
“He got in and…we were all so proud of him. And since I was already here, his parents weren’t worried about him at all. They—they trusted me.” Your voice broke and so did Jackson’s heart. “And one day, there was an accident. Someone took him to the hospital, but he…he fell into a coma.” Nothing more than a whisper. “Four months.”
He didn’t know he had gotten out of his seat until his arms were wrapped around you.
“There wasn’t anything we could do. He was just—getting worse. Every day. His father finally gave the order after hoping for so long. To—let him go.” You burst into tears and Jackson turned you so you were sobbing into his shoulder. “It’s my fault, it’s all my fault. They only let him stay because—because I was here. Because I would be there for him.”
“Hey, hey,” he said softly. “It’s not your fault. It…it wasn’t your fault. You didn’t do anything wrong. You were there for him. Things…these things just happen somehow. It’s not your fault.”
So, it wasn’t you after all?
A huge weight lifted off his chest. He hadn’t realized how much hatred and resentment he’d been carrying around all this time without knowing it.
It wasn’t you.
“How—how are his parents?”
“Not doing good.” You sniffed hard, wiping your tears away. “Not good at all.”
He gripped your shoulders and made you look at him. “What about you?”
He watched helplessly as more tears escaped the corners of your eyes. “Neither am I.”
The last thing you remembered was slumping into Jackson’s arms, drained of energy.
.
You didn’t think you would be telling anyone about Hanyu. You hadn’t told anyone except your psychology professor, who had called you to her office sometime in March because you looked too depressed to be taking your finals. And that too, was reluctant. You knew you should talk to someone about it, you knew you should be accompanying his parents to the therapist you forced them to see, but—maybe it was the prolonged blow that lessened the pain to a dull throb. Hope had ebbed away bit by bit, not all at once.
But talking about him to Jackson was so simple. It was almost as if he understood exactly what you were going through. Almost as if Hanyu was his own brother.
You wondered if Jackson had lost someone dear to him in the past. Maybe he had. That would explain the sudden compassion he had towards you now. You hadn’t told him everything, just the brief story, but he didn’t press further.
He’s sweet, you realized all too late. He really is.
-
You’d think you would be free of your flatmate at least when you went to work on weekends. Jackson was the last person who would willingly enter a library—at least, without an emergency. But no, there he was, still blowing up your phone about how he slipped in the bathroom and thinks he broke his butt, and then found that his ramen was finished so he couldn’t eat (despite there being like, healthy food somewhere in the fridge) and therefore begging you to buy some on your way home because he couldn’t go (due to the broken butt). You were rolling your eyes at the messages, but an endearing smile still crept across your lips.
“Boyfriend?” Daniel crashed his wheely chair into yours, peeking over your shoulder at your phone. You winced at his knobbly shoulder and turned off the screen.
“No.” You shoved his chair away.
“Girlfriend?”
“No.”
Daniel looked confused. “…Partner?”
Wah. What an open-minded king. “No, Kang. Just my flatmate.”
“What?” He scrunched up his nose. “No way. I saw how you were looking at their texts.”
You screeched. “What the heck?” He seemed satisfied at your reaction.
“So, crush?” he confirmed, sniggering at the blush that crept up your neck. “Who is it? Give me their number, I’ll set y’all up.”
“For the love of—”
“Y/N!”
You looked up, startled, to see Jinyoung standing on the other side of the counter. You straightened up, tensing; you had been sort of avoiding him for a while.
“Sunbae.” He pursed his lips at you in a disapproving stare.
“Where have you been? Do I have to come all the way to the public library to see my junior?” He crossed his arms. “Why are you avoiding me?”
“It’s—it’s not like that, sunbae—”
“Don’t say anything. Jackson’s been telling me about his broken ass—” You flinched, eyes darting to Daniel, who for sure misinterpreted that phrase, “—and that you’re ignoring him. What happened?”
“Oh, Y/N’s flatmate?”
Fucking hell, Daniel. Please learn to shut up.
He was sporting a shit-eating grin. “Y/N’s got a crush.”
Jinyoung’s lips immediately curled upward and you waved your arms around, banging them together in an ‘X’. “No. No, I don’t have a crush!”
“You know it’s okay, right?” Your senior reassured you. “He likes you, too.”
Oh.
Wait, what?
“Huh?” The disbelief was evident in your voice. Jinyoung shrugged, a smug little smile on his face.
“Jackson’s my best friend, Y/N. I know him. He tells me things.” He set a book down on the counter in front of Daniel, who obediently took it and scanned it for him. “And I also know he doesn’t have the balls to tell you anything. So, my question is, what are you going to do about it?”
What am I going to do about it? An idea popped into your head and you blurted it out before you could stop yourself. “I’ll tell Jackson I like him when you tell him—what was he called? JB, that you like him.”
Jinyoung’s face paled. “What?”
Now you were the smug one. “You heard me, you hypocrite. Confess to your crush and I’ll confess to mine.”
He squinted at you, clearly plotting his next move. “Fine,” he retorted, sticking his nose in the air haughtily. “I will.”
-
“You still texting Jinyoungie, huh?” Jackson teased, the pout very much audible in his voice. You looked up from your phone. He crossed his arms, narrowing his eyes.
You rolled your eyes. “Dude, when will you get over him ditching you? You know damn well he’s drowning in his love for your other friend—who? JB.”
Jackson tensed a little, but you didn’t seem to notice. “I know,” he breathed out. “JB hyung is so oblivious. So is Jinyoungie.”
“Besides,” you continued, tilting your head coyly, “Jinyoung sunbae says you’ve got a crush on me.”
The way Jackson spluttered at that was hilarious. “Wha—Me? Crush on you? As if.”
“Sure, sure.” You turned back to your phone. Jackson sat down heavily next to you, plopping his head on your lap. You peered under your screen to look at him. “Hello. What are you doing?”
“Pay attention to me.” You chuckled at the whine in his tone. “You don’t talk to me anymore.” He grasped your hand and placed it on his head. You began stroking his freshly dyed strands. You would never admit it but you liked his hair blond.
“Are you going to dye it back?”
He shifted, getting comfortable. “Probably not soon. Why? Don’t you like it?” He sat up, twisting to face you, horrified. “Do I look bad as a blond?”
You leaned back, laughing. “Stop being so dramatic, Jackson!”
Two knocks on the front door and then it opened. You jolted at the sight of Jinyoung staring between the two of you in that position. Jackson turned to follow your gaze and yelled in surprise. Slowly, Jinyoung raised a hand to cover his eyes.
“Yah!” Jackson shouted, the sheer volume causing your ears to pop. “It’s not like that!”
-
As Christmas came and went, your heart grew heavier and heavier. For several reasons. On the one hand, you were crushing hard on your flatmate like some dumb romcom cliché. On the other, that date was approaching you like a truck at eighty an hour with broken brakes.
A year to the day of the accident.
You knew, technically, that Hanyu only passed away in April, but this was truly the day you lost him. Truly the day that something was lost inside you. Something that you may never fully find again…
“Hey, Y/N, you see this?” Jackson bounded over to you holding up a snow globe and shaking it enthusiastically.
…but perhaps, one day, you would.
Your eyes softened as you watched Jackson’s infectious smile bloomed. Would he agree to come with me? He does know about Hanyu, after all.
“Jackson?” you asked quietly.
“Yeah?” He looked up and caught your expression.
“Would you come to a place with me if I asked?”
He tilted his head. “Where?”
You bit the inside of your cheek. “The funeral home.” As his face fell, you continued, “It’s almost a year to the day of…the accident.”
“Ah. It is, isn’t it?” He searched your eyes. “Are you sure about this? About me…coming with you?”
You nodded. “Yeah. I think…I think it would be good. If I had someone to talk to about it. And also haul me home. I’m probably…gonna be a mess.”
Jackson reached out, hesitantly to grip your shoulder tight before drawing your closer for an embrace. “It’s okay,” he said, sounding a little unsure himself. “It’s all gonna be okay.”
-
It was just an ordinary cold Saturday when you and Jackson left the apartment to get groceries at the supermarket. When you two were arguing over ramen, you heard a shout.
“Hey, Jackson!”
Both of you turned to see a tall, broad-shouldered young man stroll over. Jackson straightened immediately. An odd sort of feeling crept up your neck.
He seems familiar. Have I seen him—
You gasped silently.
That’s Jaebeom. How could I forget him?
“Jackson, man, where have you been?” the man asked, clapping his friend on the shoulder.
Your flatmate looked quite uncomfortable. “Guess I got busy, hyung. Sorry.”
You had to speak. “Excuse me? You’re—Im Jaebeom…right?”
Jackson quickly intervened. “This is my flatmate, hyung.”
The man turned his focus to you, narrowing his eyes curiously, before they widened in recognition. “Oh!” He pointed at you. You wouldn’t deny you were surprised he remembered you from almost a year ago. “You’re that...Y/N. Right? From the hospital?” He faltered at the mention of it. “Ah…um. How is he?”
Your heart clenched painfully, but you forced a smile. “He, uh, passed away. In April.” Jaebeom winced at the news.
“Ah, I’m really sorry.”
You waved it away. “No, no, don’t be. You have my eternal gratitude for getting him to the ER. I don’t know how many people would have done that.”
He inclined his head, fidgeting uncomfortably for a moment. “Still…yah, Jackson-ah, you knew? Why didn’t you tell me?”
You turned to Jackson curiously. “Hm?” He was pale, staring at Jaebeom with helplessness in his eyes.
“Ah, you two met there?” Jaebeom asked, contemplating. “When did you guys talk?”
You were confused, not seeing the sharp looks of ‘please-stop-talking’ that Jackson was shooting his friend. “Sorry, what? Met where?”
It was Jaebeom’s turn to look confused. “At the hospital, of course.”
You breathed out a nervous laugh, because you didn’t know where this was headed. “Why would I meet Jackson at the hospital?”
“Hyung!” Jackson interjected suddenly. Suspiciously. Moving his body in between yours and Jaebeom’s. “I think maybe we should finish up our shopping and meet later—”
“No, tell me, Jaebeom-ssi.” You put a hand on Jackson’s shoulder.
Jaebeom was at a loss. He didn’t seem to understand Jackson’s panic, and neither could you. “Jackson was with me at the hospital when we brought him in. We brought him together. I thought he met you there when you came.”
You inhaled sharply, glancing at Jackson with surprise in your eyes. “Jackson.” He flinched, remaining quiet. “Is that true?”
“Hyung, I’ll come over later,” he told Jaebeom quietly, pushing him away. His friend took a step back, wondering why on earth something so simple—good news, in fact—turned awry. He bowed, mumbling out a greeting before he picked up his shopping basket and turned away.
You were shocked beyond words.
Jackson took Hanyu to the hospital. Jackson knew who he was. Jackson knew who you were. What did this mean? Was he tracking you? Was he tracking anyone with connections to Hanyu? Is that why he asked about him and his parents?
“Y/N…”
You suddenly didn’t want to hear anything. Your feet carried you after Jaebeom, calling his name.
-
Jackson was fucked.
Why, he screamed at himself, didn’t you tell Y/N the truth as soon as you found out about it? Why, why, why? Can you blame Y/N for not listening to you? You fucking lied, Jackson!
You hadn’t come back to the apartment until past midnight after running off to talk to JB. He’d waited up for you, but you didn’t spare anything a glance before locking yourself in your room. He’d wanted to call you, wanted to make sure you were okay, but he’d already done enough damage. Were you even willing to talk to him at all? He decided he didn’t want to test it. For all he knew, you thought he was some sort of creep or a stalker or something. You probably hated him.
He fell asleep that night to the sound of you crying from the other side of the wall.
-
Unease. You didn’t know why you were feeling so unsettled. It was a bright cloudless day but you weren’t sharing the spirit. In fact, you were spacing out so much that your partner for your Statistics project had to keep snapping his fingers in front of your face to bring your focus back to him.
“Sorry, Gyeom,” you muttered wearily. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me today.”
He nodded sympathetically. “Maybe you should go home. I’ll finish up around here.”
“Ah, no.” You shook your head. “I’ll be fine. Let’s finish this.” But your phone was ringing, the caller ID displaying an unknown number. You frowned. “Hello?”
“Excuse me, is this Jia Hanyu’s emergency contact?”
You froze. This wasn’t a voice you knew. Emergency contact? Why—why would they—who…?
“Um. Y-yes?” You were already shaking. Yugyeom looked at you in alarm.
“We need you to come to the General Hospital immediately. There has been an accident.”
A click. You stared at your phone, heart racing, trembling all over. “Oh my god. Oh my god, what do I do? What do I do?” Yugyeom seized your shoulders and forced you down from growing hysteria.
“What. Happened.” His voice was steady enough that you responded the same way.
“General Hospital.”
“I’ll take you there.”
The drive to the hospital was wrought with tension. You could only think of the worst and you were crying by the time you got there, despite Yugyeom’s attempts to calm you down. You let him drag you through the reception and you desperately asked for Jia Hanyu, to be ushered—alone—into the ER. The last thing you remembered seeing was Yugyeom’s reassuring smile before you turned a corner out of sight.
You nearly bumped into a man on his phone in your daze and hastily apologized, but he neither seemed to notice or care.
The talk with the doctor was less than reassuring, however. You signed whatever they thrust at you to get his surgery started and then demanded to know who brought him in.
“Hello,” the young man greeted you politely, his clothes still stained red. He was looking at you carefully as if you would break down any moment.
You forced a wobbly smile. “Thank you so much.” It was barely more than a whisper, but he caught it.
“It was the least we could do,” he replied. Your knees suddenly gave way and you sank into a chair.
“Tell me what happened to him,” you pleaded.
And he told you about the car that came speeding out of nowhere although the signal was red. If you were in your right mind, you might have heard the anger in his voice. It hadn’t been the kid’s fault then. Tears slipped out of the corner of your eyes.
Your gaze rested on his soiled clothes. “I’ll—I’ll replace those,” you said weakly, gesturing to his attire. “They’re ruined.”
“Don’t be silly, of course you don’t have to.” He knelt in front of you. “Are you okay? That’s what matters.”
You nodded, sniffling. “Yeah, I’ll be okay.” You didn’t know why you were attempting the brave front. “You didn’t tell me your name yet. How can I be grateful if I don’t know your name?”
He chuckled under his breath. “My name is Im Jaebeom.”
“Y/N.”
He squeezed your hands. “He’ll be fine, you know.”
“I know. That doesn’t make things any easier.”
“Doesn’t it?”
The two of you sat there in silence before you remembered that this was a person, he probably had plans interrupted, he must need to get home. Reluctantly, he stood to leave, but only after making sure you would be okay.
“And—” you grabbed his wrist. “Yugyeom—he’s sitting out there in reception. Tell him—tell him to go home and that I’ll be fine. Please?”
He nodded. Left.
You broke down completely. And you thought that would be the worst to happen.
You weren’t bargaining on the mess that would happen the next day.
You never thought he wouldn’t wake up.
-
The apartment fell silent in a way that you never thought would be possible after Jackson moving in. There was always noise in it; but no longer. Several of your neighbours had even asked if Jackson had moved out. What were you supposed to tell them? No, he didn’t move out, I just found out he’s a liar and I’m trying to cope with that by ignoring him and he’s too scared to approach me?
In truth, you weren’t totally mad at him or worried that he would be a stalker. After talking things over with Jaebeom, you’d concluded that Jackson hadn’t seen you that day at the hospital (Jaebeom recalled he’d gone to make a call or something). So the first time he saw you really was at the apartment. And that’s why he was so curious about the picture. That’s when he’d known.
But why hide it from you?
-
“Y/N!” You weren’t sure if socializing was a good idea at the moment, but when you bumped into Jinyoung at the coffee shop down the street, you didn’t push him away. He joined the line at the counter right after you.
“Hello, sunbae.” The smile you put on definitely didn’t reach your eyes, but Jinyoung didn’t comment. Most college students had the same problem.
“I did it.” He told you smugly.
“Did what?”
“I told JB hyung that I liked him.”
Despite the inner turmoil you’d been going through for the past few days, you gasped. “Wait, what? Seriously?” He nodded, clearly brimming with glee, bouncing up and down on his heels like a giddy child just given sweets.
“He’s here, I want you to meet him.” He gestured to a table a short distance away. You saw the top of a head and smiled.
“I’d love to.”
He grinned, eyes crinkling. “Thanks, uh, for encouraging me to.”
You let out a laugh. “Um, you’re welcome? I didn’t really think you’d do it; I only said that to get you off my back about Jackson.” And as soon as the name rolled off your lips, your heart sank.
Jinyoung must have sensed the distress in your expression, because he asked, “Are you okay? Did you guys fight again?”
“I guess you could say that.” After placing your orders, you followed him to their table, eager to meet this JB hyung you’d heard so much about.
You saw the man break into a wide smile on seeing Jinyoung return, but the moment you came within his line of sight, his face fell in surprise. So did yours.
“Y/N?” he asked, incredulous.
“Jaebeom?” You were in equal disbelief. A moment of silence passed when you two looked at each other and Jinyoung back and forth between.
“You guys know each other?” Jinyoung questioned. “Ah, did Jackson introduce you? I thought you and Jackson weren’t talking, hyung.”
“This is your JB hyung?” You laughed.
Jaebeom looked sheepish. “My friends call me that.”
Jinyoung was just sitting there next to you, across from Jaebeom, confused. Jaebeom decided to take pity on him.
“Nyoung, you remember I told you that Jackson and I took a kid to the hospital? Last year?”
He nodded. “Yeah, the car accident.”
Your chest felt tight. “That was my cousin.”
Jinyoung’s mouth fell open in shock. “Wait, what?” His eyes darted around, thinking. “And…Jackson knew who you were?”
You shook your head. “I met Jaebeom-ssi at the hospital that evening, but I didn’t see Jackson. He didn’t know I was the emergency contact until a month ago or something. But he didn’t tell me he was the one who took Hanyu to the hospital. I only found out a week ago when we bumped into Jaebeom-ssi at the supermarket.”
Jinyoung sat there, stunned. “I can’t believe he didn’t tell me any of this.”
“He told me everything a few days ago,” Jaebeom interjected. “But he made me promise not to tell anyone.” He leaned forward and stared at you. “You’re still not talking to him, are you?”
You lowered your head in guilt. “I want to. It’s just—he lied to me and I don’t know why. I want to talk to him, but I just—don’t know how to break the silence.”
“His heart’s…in the right place,” Jaebeom assured you. “Honestly, I don’t think even he knows why he hid it from you.”
“I think I might know,” Jinyoung said softly. Both of you turned to look at him.
“I thought he didn’t tell you anything.”
“Not the recent stuff,” he agreed, “but he did tell me what happened last year.” He searched your eyes, probably wondering how to put things into words. “Did Jackson tell you that he visited Hanyu at the hospital?”
You stilled. “He—he visited Hanyu?”
Your senior nodded. “He went nearly every week to check up on him, to see if there was any progress.”
Your jaw dropped in shock. “What?”
Jaebeom glanced over at his boyfriend, biting his lip nervously. “I think Jackson should be the one explaining all this.” Jinyoung looked sufficiently chastised.
“I’m just saying that might be the reason,” he hastily said. “He was really…devastated when he passed, you know. Came to me bawling his eyes out. I really didn’t know what to do.”
“Where was I during all this?” Jaebeom questioned.
“Japan, I think. But Y/N, I’m not saying you shouldn’t be mad at him,” your senior advised. “I can understand that. But, you know, hear him out. I’ll talk to him if you want. He’s not a bad guy.”
You inclined your head. “I understand. I’ll—I’ll listen to what he has to say.”
-
You went back that afternoon, heart in your throat.
What do I tell him? What do I say? How do I break this silence?
-
You waited.
The clock struck ten, then eleven.
Twelve.
You fidgeted with your phone, anxiety seeping through you. Where was he?
Should I call him? Would that be—ah, never mind. Why should I be the one to patch this up? I didn’t do anything wrong! He’s the one who should apologize. Why isn’t he here?
An hour later, you weren’t thinking about the politics of your troubles. You were worried now, very much so. You tried to call him, but his phone was switched off. Had he run away somewhere? What was going on? Should you call the police?
It was past one thirty when an unknown number called you. You stared at your phone, heart pounding, tears already pricking at the corners of your eyes.
Not again, you thought desperately. Please not again.
“Hello?”
“Y/N, it’s me. Jaebeom.” He didn’t waste any time. “Jackson’s with me; I figured you would be worried.”
You sunk into the sofa cushions, a hand over your heart. Oh, thank heaven. “He—he’s with you?”
“Yeah, he—uh, I’m guessing he went out by himself because he’s drunk out of his mind. Came knocking at my door a while ago.”
You didn’t know what to think. “Ah. I tried calling him, but…”
“Oh, his phone’s dead.” You heard muffled noises on the other end. “I wanted to call you sooner, but I had to find your number from his wallet.”
“His…his wallet?”
“Yeah, you’re his emergency contact. He has your info written down on a piece of paper.”
“Oh.” Your voice sounded very small. “I see.”
He cleared his throat. “Um, he’s asleep now, but I’ll send him over tomorrow after his hangover’s gone down.”
“Ah. Yes. Thank you, Jaebeom-ssi.” You paused, about to hang up.
“Wait, uh, Y/N?”
“Yes?”
Jaebeom sounded hesitant. “Okay, I’m…I’m not as great with words as Jinyoung is, but…um, I think you should know that Jackson is a good guy. Like, I know he may have hidden some things from you, but he wasn’t trying to, like, hurt you or anything.”
You swallowed down the lump in your throat. “I know.”
“He was crying, you know.” Jaebeom made an uncomfortable noise, as if he didn’t know how to proceed from there. “When he showed up here. I couldn’t understand what he wanted to say, but I heard your name. He really cares about you, yeah? Even if—even if he doesn’t tell you.”
You nodded slowly, before remembering that he couldn’t see it. “Yeah, I—I understand.”
There was a brief awkward pause, before he coughed. “So, um, yeah. You should…probably sleep. Good night.”
“Right. Good night.”
You silently set your phone down and put your head in your hands. When did all this become so complicated? Why was it so difficult? I guess it’s my fault for not listening to him or giving him a chance to explain. Do I just wait for him to come back? What do I say?
-
The sun rose bleakly on the next morning.
You awoke to the jarring sound of the alarm ringing in an empty, silent apartment.  Laying in bed, staring at the ceiling, you sighed, going through everything that happened a year ago, a month ago, a week ago. Wondering how things had escalated to this. It’s better not to overthink about it. When he comes back, we’ll either talk it out or fight it out.
Around ten, Jaebeom shot you a text informing you that he’d sent Jackson back.
You sat on the sofa, giving you a view of the front door. You would wait. Waste no time. Just get it over with. You were vaguely aware of your heartbeat in mild panic state.
At last, someone knocked, tried the door and opened it.
Jackson’s gaze fell on your stoic expression and he flinched. Slowly stepping in and removing his shoes making as little noise as possible, he stood in the doorway for a moment before sitting down on the other end of the sofa.
Neither of you spoke.
You sensed him fumbling with his fingers, itching to say something.
“I went to see him.”
You didn’t respond. He took your silence as invitation to continue.
“Every week. I—I don’t know why, to be honest. I just…” He shook his head. “I just felt some sort of attachment to him. I wanted him to get better. I really did.”
Your heart ached at his words. How could you be angry for this? For his compassion?
“When I went the day after he…” he broke off. “When I went, I was told…the news. And I didn’t know how to take it. I couldn’t say goodbye. I couldn’t believe that anyone would give up on him.” He drew in a deep breath, still clearly anxious at your silence. “Deep down I guess I knew that there was nothing we could do and it was easier to…end his suffering, but…I didn’t want to accept it, I guess. I know that sounds silly, but—”
“It’s not silly.”
He paused, hesitant. Your voice was rough from lack of use.
“Ah.” He scratched the back of his neck. “I…I shouldn’t have, but I think I just put my resentment on whoever his emergency contact was, you know? I guess I figured they made the decision.” You felt tears beginning to form but your blinked them away. “I really didn’t know it was you. Or that you weren’t—”
“I know, Jackson.” You finally looked up at him. He was on the edge of his seat, worried but hopeful. “The boys told me everything. I just wish you hadn’t lied.”
“So do I,” he said sincerely.
The two of you stared at each other, not saying anything. Jackson seemed ready for an outburst, a single sentence that you weren’t going to forgive him.
“Why would you do that, though?” You spat, slamming your hand down onto the cushions. Jackson jumped, startled.
“I’m really sorry, Y/N, I didn’t think—”
“Do you have any idea how worried I was when you didn’t come home last night?”
“—find out…wait, what?” He was dumbfounded. “Oh.”
“I was this close to calling the police, you know that? I don’t even know how many gods I thanked when Jaebeom called saying you had crashed at his place. Why do you have to go and get drunk, huh? Why do you have to put yourself in danger like that?”
Jackson visibly relaxed, a small smile breaking across his lips. “I’m so sorry. Does this mean I’m forgiven?”
“You’re so stupid.” And you stretched your arms out for a hug. He melted into it, holding you tight so he’d never let you go. “He would have loved you, too,” you murmured into his shoulder.
He drew back, eyes uncharacteristically serious. That was a grand statement you had just made. But you weren’t going to withdraw that. You knew it was true.
“Does-does that mean you—love me?” Jackson spluttered, blotches of red forming on his cheeks. And then you realized exactly what you had said.
“What? No,” you retorted defensively, pushing him away. “What are you talking about? I never said anything like that.” And then you jumped up to run away, squirming out of his firm grasp. His fingers found your sides and you burst out gasping.
Laughter rung through the still apartment.
There was happiness again.
-
“Hyung, you called Y/N yesterday?”
“Yeah, I did. You think your flatmate wouldn’t be worried about you?”
“What did you say?”
“Ha. I didn’t say anything. Why? Should I have told Y/N you were saying “I love you” in your sleep?”
-
“Yeah, Jinyoung, I’ll be there, don’t worry so much,” you spoke into the phone you balanced on your shoulder. Your hands were busy washing out the dishes you’d used for lunch. “How’s Jaebeom doing?” You hummed as your senior (now graduated, big whoop, whatever, ugh) went into an explanation on how his boyfriend’s cat woke them up yowling at three in the morning because she got herself stuck on top of the display cabinet and he couldn’t go back to sleep.
“Is Jackson there?” he asked you. You wiped your hands hastily on a washcloth before taking your phone in your hand and stepping over to the window.
“No, he had a morning shift,” you informed him. “He was supposed to be here by now, come to think of it.” You glanced out, wondering where he might be.
“Ah, okay. Remind him to come tomorrow, too.” Jinyoung paused. “Wait, is it a good idea to bring Jacks? Do you think he’ll be too loud? I don’t want to blow this—”
“Jinyoung, relax,” you reassured. “Jaebeom’s parents already love you, I don’t see why you’re so afraid—”
“That’s when we were just friends!” He cried, panic evident in his tone. “I don’t even know what they’ll say about this!”
Your phone made a funny beeping noise. “Jinyoung, you’ll be fine. I promise you. I’ll call you back, okay? I’m getting another call.” You hung up on him to see an unknown number calling. Without thinking twice, you answered. “Hello?”
“Excuse me, is this Jackson Wang’s emergency contact?”
-
A/N: *bowing* I’m very sorry.

Mr. Scarface
“You cost us a lot of money, you know,” Anthony’s mom scolded him angerily. “Maybe you thought this would make us feel bad for you, but you’re still gonna repay every cent we spent on you.”
And a lot of money I bet that was, Anthony thought. He sat in the backseat of the car, between Jack and Bartholomew, the ones responsible for his horrificly burned face.
“Did you not hear your mother, young man?!” snapped Anthony’s dad. “We are NOT HAPPY with you.”
“I know,” his son said. It was obvious. They really thought that he pressed his own face into a barbecue grill as an attention getter. His brothers weren’t laughing, they were crying tears of sympathy. They weren’t holding him there, it just looked like that when they rushed forward to pull him off.
Now Anthony would have to go through life with bars burned into his face. Wonderful.
He’d spent two weeks in the hospital. There, he was mostly observed and given basic pain medicine and antibiotics. His parents refused to pay for a skin graft or other plastic surgery.
There were a few good things, Anthony mused as he lay in his bed that night. For one, most of the burns were third degree. That meant nerves were destroyed. He couldn’t feel most of the damage.
The other good thing was the nurse who let him call her Auntie Irene. She brought him candy, let him swear as much as he wanted, and best of all, she believed him.
She was the only one who asked him for his side of the story. During his many hospital stays throughout the years, she always picked at his family’s dumbass excuses for his injuries. She didn’t believe a  word of their bullshit. It was too bad that no one believed her.
He had known her most of his life. When he was nine years old, at the hospital for a routine check up, he had cried to her about how his brothers killed his bunny rabbit and blamed it on him.
As his mother texted obliviously on her phone, Anthony whispered to the kind old nurse: “Can I tell you a secret?”
She knelt at his height. “Of course, Sweetheart.”
“I wish you were my mommy.”
But she wasn’t. Anthony woke up with tears dampening his bandages. He looked to his bedside table where the ashes of Apollo were kept. The cremation and urn were the only decent birthday present he’d ever gotten. His parents believed he did it, but at least Jack hadn’t been able to convince them it wasn’t an accident.
Jack was twelve when he pulled the car out of the driveway and onto Apollo. He told their parents that Anthony took him out to play without a leash and he got in the way of Jack’s driving practice. Jack wasn’t strictly supposed to be doing that, but the boys’ parents gave zero fucks about that.
Anthony Huang often laughed at the bitter irony of life and his parents’ so called logic. Once he did it in the street, and a passerby looked...scared.
Anthony listened to himself and realized that he sounded demented. It felt good.
Anthony rose from bed the next day and stood in the mirror to change his bandages. The scars were a deep, deep red. They looked like red prison bars. How accurate.
Back to school he went, behind two sets of bars.
“What the fuck happened to your face?”
Anthony glanced at the boy who shared his locker. “What the fuck happened to your brain?”
Having your face pressed into a red hot grill changes you. It can change you in many different ways. In Anthony’s case, it unleashed a deadly rage inside of him that had been at least partially contained before. Until his first real fight, he didn’t realize that he could be as dangerous as his brothers.
When Bitchy Bastard swung his fists, Anthony blocked it with ease that  shocked him. He was so surprised that he didn’t expect the next blow.
Being punched in the gut hurts. Anthony knew from experience that being punched six times in the gut while pressed against a locker is much, much worse. Bitchy Bastard found that out soon, and though he got detention for two weeks, Anthony truly felt it was worth it to give someone what they deserved.
He got in a lot of fights and they showed him that it feels good to hurt people. Anthony didn’t think he was like his brothers, though, because he only hurt people who deserved it.
Over the next two months, Anthony continued to change drastically. His outlook on being beaten up changed,
Don’t stand there. Stand up for yourself.
His prayers changed.
“Don’t kill my brothers. Give me the balls to do it myself.”
The way he perceived himself changed as well. Before, he was weak. Now he began to see himself when he looked in the mirror.
Despite being the youngest brother, he was also the tallest. Anthony saw that now. Anthony also saw that the scarring on his face made him look intimidating.
And he wasn’t even remotely weak. He was actually more muscular and stronger looking that Bartholomew and Jack put together. Maybe that had something to do with all the hits he took.
And weren’t his teachers always saying how smart he was? It became clear to him that he didn’t need to wait for the death of his brothers when he could make it happen.
On a Tuesday evening, Anthony sat thinking. He didn’t want to go to prison, but he wanted his family gone from the planet.
Yes, all of them. In Anthony’s eyes, his parents’ negligence and stupidity were just as abusive as sticking someone’s face in a barbecue grill for kicks. They all needed to die.
Maybe he could forge a murder suicide note. That would be funny. Anthony had to bite his arm until he stopped laughing, then he kept planning. Who would the killer be?
Bartholomew. The brother who’s name he bore between his first and third had always been the worst. They hated each other with a burning passion, literally.
Behind closed doors, Bartholomew was the family pyromaniac. He liked lighting butterflies wings on fire to watch them burn as they soared. Anthony was the sensitive one who cried at the sight, so of course, Bartholomew did it all the more.
When Anthony was six and and his oldest brother was nine, he lit balls of paper on fire and threw them at him, forcing him to jump in the family’s pool and nearly drown. No one believed his reason why.
Good old Bart, always playing with fire. He had actually been the first one to press his face down on that grill.
Anthony had actually been able to smell his flesh burning. He could feel his eye melting like candy left in the sun for too long. It was agony until the burning demolished his nerve endings, and then, looking in the mirror was the true agony. That was worthy of death.
By eleven at night, the family was sleeping and Anthony’s plan was complete. He’d spent two hours getting the handwriting just right. Bartholomew’s handwriting.
There was rope in the shed and gloves and knives in the kitchen and a letter in Anthony’s hand. Grinning like an even more demented Cheshire cat, Anthony carried out his plan.
He tied a noose and went to Biggest Brother’s room. For this part he needed everybody to stay in bed. So instead of messing with the rope first, Anthony chose suffocation.
“Ready to fucking die?” He smothered Bartholomew with his pillow, then wrapped his hand around the knife and rope, then stabbed Jack with the knife. Blood poured from the wound and Anthony smiled even bigger. He had dreamed of this for years, and it felt every bit as wonderful as he had imagined.
Now he had to hang Bart’s corpse from the ceiling rafters. Easier said than done, but it got done. Now for his parents, Carolina and Miles Huang.
First, Anthony put on Bartholomew’s shoes. Later, this would be important.
Miles went first, and he went easy. His wounds were identical to those of his second son, but Carolina fought. If they all died the same way, it just wouldn’t be realistic. That would be suspicious, and Anthony didn’t plan to get caught. He planned on a long and satisfying career of vengence.
First, Anthony replicated her husband and son’s stab wounds. To make it look like there was a struggle, he slashed her face and arms. He then pulled her down, purposefully knocking over a lamp in the process.
Bartholomew was never methodical in anything he did, it was always chaos. Anthony had to replicate that.
He walked back to Bartholomew’s room in his shoes and tracked blood there purposefully. Then he put the shoes on Bartholomew.
After he was finished, Anthony walked through the house and made sure that all the evidence pointed toward his oldest brother. It did.
He went outside and scaled a tree, just in case a neighbor decided to spy. This was important to Anthony’s story. He planned to tell the police that during his mother’s struggle, she shouted for him to run and call 911, so he had.
Anthony double checked the evidence again when he went back inside, as he waited for the police to arrive. It was perfect.
Funny. Everyone said that revenge wasn’t so sweet when you got it, but they were so damn wrong. It felt amazing, and Anthony laughed long and hard, because he knew he would never be caught.

The Worm Reads: The Assassin’s Blade, Ch 28-29
A great way to start your first year in college is reading shitty YA novels.
We open up with Celery and some other assassins helping Ilias and the Master.
A few sniffs revealed that the wine had been laced with a small amount of gloriella, just enough to paralyze him, not kill him. (...) How had he not noticed it before he drank? Perhaps he wasn’t as humble as he seemed; perhaps he’d been arrogant enough to believe that he was safe here.
I am going to lose my shit. I am actually going to go insane.
You didn’t fucking notice either Celery you goddamn waste of space piece of shit!!!!!!! You were drugged the same as him, you don’t get to act all high and mighty!!!!! Fuck you, Celery. I was considering snarking the rest of the series but Jesus Christ this is actually making me fucking exhausted to the point where I don’t know if I can handle it.
The next few pages do that shitty thing where each scene is only a sentence or two long and they have to use the scene indicator a million times and it looks fucking ugly. Look at this.
Tumblr media
Shit’s ugly, man. Anyways, Celery lets Ansel go even though she murdered innocent people and generally fucked everything up because of reasons, I suppose.
The Master calls Celery into his room later to talk (yeah, he can talk now) to her about how poor Ansel lost her family. Yeah, still doesn’t justify her murdering Mikhail and other people who considered her their friends.
Tumblr media
He walked to a latticework hutch, as if he were giving her the time to regain her composure, and pulled out a letter. By the time he returned to her, Celaena’s eyes were clear. “When you give this to your master, hold your head high.” She took the letter. Her recommendation.
I wish the Master was in a better book, he truly deserves it.
He also gives Celery a bunch of gold to help pay off her debts, and even though I hate Celery and she doesn’t deserve it, the Master is too pure, too good for this world?
Sunlight gleamed on the gold inside, reflecting through the room like light on water. All that gold … and the piece of Spidersilk the merchant had given her … she couldn’t think of the possibilities that wealth would open to her, not right now. “When you give your master his letter, also give him this. And tell him that in the Red Desert, we do not abuse our disciples.
I think I stan him now? Yeah, I stan a minor character whose never gonna appear again. That’s how shitty the cast is in this book.
With that, that brings this shitty, shitty story to a close. I hate this one the most so far; horrible writing, horrible characters, Celery continues to grow even more unlikable, and there wasn’t even any Sammy in there to cling onto. Let’s just start the next one.
The next story is called The Assassin and the Underworld. Ow the edge.
The cavernous entrance hall of the Assassins’ Keep was silent as Celaena Sardothien stalked across the marble floor, a letter clutched between her fingers.
And we’re starting off with another Celery POV. Joy. At least The Healer short story allowed us tiny breaks with Yrene. Will I ever get my beloved Sammy POV?
So Celery marches into Arobynn’s study and tosses the letter at him, growing immediately pissy when he doesn’t open it.
She looked at the exquisite red carpet beneath her feet. Someone had done a splendid job of getting all the blood out. How much of the blood on the carpet had been hers—and how much of it had belonged to Sam Cortland, her rival and co-conspirator in the destruction of Arobynn’s slave agreement?
Good lord SJM, we know who Sammy is, stop info dumping us about shit we already know.
“If I could take back that night, Celaena, I would.” He leaned over the edge of the desk, his hands now forming fists.
So Arobynn pulls the abuse shtick of apologizing again and again for abusing Celery, and I hope to god she isn’t stupid enough to fall for it.
“Every day,” he went on. “Every day since you left, I’ve gone to the temple of Kiva to pray for forgiveness.” She might have snorted at the idea of the King of the Assassins kneeling before a statue of the God of Atonement, but his words were so raw. Was it possible that he actually regretted what he had done?
I swear to fucking god if I have to read Celery forgiving her abuser and handwaving his abuse away I am actually going to Kermit
Father, brother, lover—he’d never really declared himself any of them. Certainly not the lover part, though if Celaena had been another sort of girl, and if Arobynn had raised her differently, perhaps it might have come to that. He loved her like family, yet he put her in the most dangerous positions. He nurtured and educated her, yet he’d obliterated her innocence the first time he’d made her end a life. He’d given her everything, but he’d also taken everything away.
I am actually cringing so hard right now this is a major Yikes. Regardless of how many presents he buys you or if he acts nice sometimes, he’s still an abuser! He still beat the shit out of you and threatened to kick you out of your home if you didn’t get what he wanted!
So yeah Celery decides “oh well I’m not telling him about the gold I have and my plans to leave him” so fuck the Mute Master for giving you all that gold, I guess? Fuck you, Celery, just fuck you.
“Benzo Doneval is coming to Rifthold,” Arobynn said. Celaena cocked her head. She’d heard of Doneval—he was an immensely powerful businessman from Melisande, a country far to the southwest, and one of Adarlan’s newer conquests
Another boring fucker like Lord Berick who probably won’t even make an appearance? Seems likely.
Doneval is friends with a queen of Melisande that surrendered her crown to the King of Adarlan and he’s here to discuss building a trading road to help get some wealth rolling in Melisande.
Doneval also wants to set up a slavery trade in Adarlan, so Arobynn has been hired to take him out. Great. More of using slaves to prop Celery up, I see.
She was beginning to see where this was going. Doneval was practically wrapped in a ribbon for her. All she had to do was find out what time the meeting would take place, learn his defenses, and figure out a way around them.
I cannot wait to see how she fucks up this supposedly easy mission.
And even though there was no excuse in this world for what he had done, Arobynn was all she had. The history that lay between them, dark and twisted and full of secrets, was forged by more than just gold. And if she left him, if she paid off her debts right now and never saw him again …
Yeah, you read that right. Celery forgives her abuser because he raised her. Holy fuck, this is very uncomfortable for personal reasons I’m not going to get into, but just because someone raises you doesn’t mean you owe them shit. Fucking hell, SJM, do you know how humans function? Do you read your own shitty novels before you send them off to be printed?
Celery peaces out of there after lowkey forgiving her abuser which is. sjkhakdhkadhjk.
A passing servant bowed his head, eyes averted. Everyone who worked here knew more or less who she was, and would keep her identity secret on pain of death
But like??? Just???? Why?? Why is this a thing why why why why.
She clenched her hands into fists and was about to whirl and stomp back down the stairs to tell Arobynn that she was leaving and that he no longer owned her, when someone stepped into the elegantly appointed hall. Sam Cortland.
THERE HE IS THERE’S MY BOY THERE’S MY BOY
I missed Sammy so much holy shit, I can’t believe I’m actually excited to read this book for once. Sammy deserves such a better series.
No missing limbs, no limp, no indication of anything haunting him. His chestnut hair had gotten a little longer, but it suited him. And he was tan—gloriously tan, as if he’d spent the whole summer basking in the sun.
I’m so happy in fact, I barely did more than roll my eyes at the tanning thing. Sammy is here and he’s not maimed or harmed! No doubt that’ll change by the end for Celery’s angst but let me have this while it lasts.
“Are you hurt?” Sam asked quietly, taking another step closer. It took her a moment to realize that his imagination had probably taken him to a far, far worse place when she said someone had held a blade to her throat.
Please tell me that wasn’t a casual reference to sexual assault. Please tell me.
He was now looking more closely at her, at the almost invisible white line along her cheek—another gift from Ansel—at her hands, at everything. His lean, muscled body tensed. His chest had gotten broader, too.
I love how Sammy was implied to be an average sized dude until SJM decided Celery needs to thirst for him, and then BAM instant broad shouldered buff hottie. This series is so fucking ridiculous we are reaching Twilight levels.
“Sam!” a dark-haired, green-eyed young woman chided, laughter on her lips. “There you—” The girl’s eyes met Celaena’s. Celaena stopped smiling as she recognized her.
Oh great, more fucking girl hate. Listen, I’m not gonna pretend all women are perfect delicate angels who do nothing wrong and that all women get along 100% of the time but I’m sick and tired of all girls in YA not getting along. Why can’t girls just... be friends? Be civil and kind to one another? You know, how it mostly is in real life?
“Lysandra,” Celaena echoed. She’d met Lysandra when they were both ten, and in the seven years that they’d known each other, Celaena couldn’t recall a time when she didn’t want to beat in the girl’s face with a brick.
Oh great, it’s Lysandra to boot. Those who read my E0S know she was a decent character, certainly one who deserved better than to be a love interest for Assdion. Can’t wait for Celery to slut shame her a million times in this novel!
Apparently Lysandra and Celery cat fight all the time and one time Lysandra stole a fan from Celery so she beat the shit out of her. Lovely.
“[Arobynn] invited your future clients here?” “Oh, no.” Lysandra giggled. “This is just for me and the girls. And Clarisse, of course.” She used her madam’s name, too, like a weapon, a word meant to crush and dominate—a word that whispered: I am more important than you; I have more influence than you; I am everything and you are nothing.
Literally nothing that Lysandra said implied any of that, but go off on how important you supposedly are, Celery. She doesn’t have the brain power to comprehend people’s lives don’t revolve around her.
Lysandra lifted her chin, looking down her delicately freckled nose at Celaena. “My Bidding is in six days. They expect me to break all the records.” Celaena had seen a few young courtesans go through the Bidding process—girls trained until they were seventeen, when their virginity was sold to the highest bidder.
I know shit like this happened in real life, but the fact that Lysandra is excited about it is.... bleh. I already know SJM is gonna be super fucking tasteless about serious topics like this.
“Sam,” Lysandra went on, putting a slender hand on his arm, “has been so helpful with making sure all the preparations are ready for my Bidding party.” Celaena was surprised at the swiftness of her desire to rip that hand right off Lysandra’s wrist. Just because he sympathized with the courtesans didn’t mean he had to be so … friendly with them.
Oh, fuck you, Celery. Just because you have a crush on Sammy doesn’t mean he owes you shit. If he wants to be with Lysandra, that’s his right and he has no obligations to return your feelings!!! But no, use it as an excuse to slut shame Lysandra. You fucking piece of shit.
Though Lysandra’s virginity was unquestionable—it had to be—there were plenty of other things that she could still do. Things that she might have done with Sam …
This fucking bitch I swear to god.
1. Way to slut shame and portray it as a good thing if the girl “‘deserves it”“, SJM!
2. So what if Sammy and Lysandra had sex with each other? Sammy has no obligation to like you back or save himself for you. Jesus fucking christ.
Celery runs off to have a cry and literally nobody gives a shit. The end.

Curiosity Killed the Cat ; Part 2.
Imagine: that you’re basically apart of the ‘Scooby Gang’ and have been gone from Riverdale for the year before coming back to only find out that everything’s changed. Death and all, so when visiting a surprised Jughead, Sweet Pea shows up and Sparks a flame in your pretty little badass mind - Part 2! This was requested awhile back, if you don’t remember this imagine. Here is part 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You’ve basically known Sweet Pea for a good Seven months. That’s how long it’s been since the two of you met at Jugheads Trailer. You can honestly say that even though he’s your best friend. You have completely fallen in love with him. Sure he isn’t pure as most hearts in this town but it didn’t really matter to you. Yet you don’t want to ruin what you both have, he means the world to you and you don’t think you can afford to lose him. Archie just got used to the fact that he’s was your friend, which is relieving as hell. At this point, you were thinking of telling Jughead and get his opinion on all of this.
You slowly walked up to Jugheads trailer as you knocked on the door. “(Y/N), hey."Jughead said, hugging you as he smiled.
"Juggie, How’s things?"You asked as he pulled away.
"Good, great actually.. but I have a feeling this isn’t your annual house call. What’s wrong?” Jughead asked as he walked to the kitchen, grabbing something out of the fridge before returning with two soda’s, sitting down with you on the Sofa.
“You know me so well, Jones."You said with a laugh, taking a drink as you looked at him.
"So what is it?"Jughead asked, fixing his beanie.
"Sweet Pea."You said, sending him to cough on his drink.
"Is this where you tell me that you’ve helplessly fallen in love with the asshat?"Jughead grinned as you laughed, slapping his shoulder.
"That obvious, huh?"You asked as he arched his eyebrow.
"Considering you’re wearing his Jacket, and all you ever do is spend time with him? Duh."Jughead stated, causing you to blush before sighing.
"So what do I do, Jug? I don’t want to lose him."You asked as He nodded his head.
"You need to talk to him, Just go to his place and try okay?"Jughead told you as you thought to yourself. "Besides, You’re (Y/F/N) fucking (Y/L/N). If he doesn’t see your worth? He isn’t worth it."He assured you, causing you to laugh softly before smiling and ended up hugging him tightly.
"Thanks Jug."You said as he rubbed your back. "Anytime, Sunshine."He chimed.
You left Jughead’s trailer that night, driving to Sweet Pea’s.
//
You noticed an unfamiliar bike in the driveway once you arrived at the familiar trailer. "You’re my best friend, you never have to knock.” You recalled Sweet Pea saying that day, however. Tonight night made you wish you had. The front door was slightly open, You noticed Sweet Pea conversating with a girl, a beautiful one at that.
“You’ve changed so much. All to that girl that Jughead knows, for what? Some fun? How am I supposed to know you’re serious about this job?"The girl asked, the Serpent Jacket on her back signature she was one of them.
This point you thought Sweet Pea would stand up for you.. "I haven’t changed, that girl doesn’t mean anything, just some Northside play toy. Okay? I can handle this."Sweet Pea snapped. At that point, you felt your heart drop to your stomach. You couldn’t believe anything you were hearing at that point, but you knew it was true.
Sweet Pea was just using you, for seven months that was. All the late night hang outs, the milkshakes at Pop’s. Drag races, movies, walking you home that first night. You couldn’t believe how stupid you were. Yet the memories of happiness was the least damage. The issue what really broke you was that he called you ‘Just some Northside Play toy.’ that had brought you back to the night you first returned and how you were attacked by ghoulies. That is what really made you lose control. But maybe you were dazing. So doing the most idiotic thing, you stayed and listened.
"Oh yeah?"The girl asked him as she got in his face. "Prove it."She whispered with a smirk, kissing him as he was in shock. That was it, that was your final straw. You had backed away from the door, as something had ran down your cheeks. You didnt realize that at this point you were crying. You didn’t know why you seemed so damn shocked at this. You just threw his jacket down, it knocked over a glass on his porch sending it to shatter and more than likely draw attention in the process. Yet you didn’t care.
You ran to your car as you pulled out of the driveway, a concerned Sweet Pea standing on the porch as you sped out onto the road. You didn’t even bother to look back at the boy who just broke your heart.
***
It’s been about two weeks, over 100 missed calls from Sweet Pea, non-stop knocking on your door at home. You couldn’t bring yourself to face him. Toni had called you, of course you didn’t have any reason to hate her but you never knew if it was her or Sweet Pea calling. Those chocolate eyes of his clouding your memory made it hard not to pick up the phone to call him. Or the reminder of his strong arms holding you when you two were on his couch chatting about your crappy days.
You finally went back to school today, a worried Betty and Veronica rushing up to see you. "Are you okay? Jughead told me, you haven’t answered our calls."Betty said as you gave her a weak smile.
"I’m cool now, Betty. I just needed time, you know?"You said softly as Reggie and Archie walked over.
"I Hope you know, Jughead let him have it. Like full blown."Archie mentioned as he wrapped an arm around Ronnie. You smiled softly as you glanced at the two, sighing at how it reminded you of how Sweet Pea held you when you two hung out with Toni and Fangs.
"Guys really, I’m fine. I just want to enjoy this last day of school before we all are eating Thanksgiving turkey and puking out feathers until Christmas."You joked as Reggie wrapped you in a hug and ruffled your head.
"That a girl."He teased as the five of you walked to class.
//
Meanwhile on the other side of town, a familiar quote drove Sweet Pea over the edge. "You see, if we love someone. We don’t hurt them, at least we try not to. We want to protect them. Even if it means you do have to hurt them. Even if you didn’t mean to.” The English teacher said as Sweet Pea slammed his hand down and stormed out, Jughead arching an Eyebrow as he stood up and followed him, along with Toni and Fangs.
“Sweet Pea, Slow down!” Toni Yelled as the group followed him outside.
“I Fucked up! I hurt her, I didn’t mean to. I just, needed Gina to believe me so I can find out who the hell is selling this Jingle Jangle. I didn’t know (Y/N) would be there. I need her okay? She might be a Northside Princess, but she’s my Northside Princess, my best friend.."Sweet Pea said, the unexpected happened.
Toni saw a genuine tear slip down his cheek as Jughead sighed. "Why didn’t you tell us Sweet Pea, we’re your friends. We would have understood!"Jughead snapped as Sweet Pea glared.
"I didn’t want to involve you, if something would’ve happened to you she would’ve kicked my ass."The young boy yelled as Toni walked to him.
"Alright, let’s calm down, okay? Now do you want to get (Y/N) Back or not?"Toni asked as Sweet Pea looked down at her.
//
It didn’t take long for Jughead to explain it to the others and how they needed to lure you to Jughead’s trailer that night. That was when Betty called you, you still had your school clothes on and luckily your shoes. Because what she told you nearly gave you a heart attack. ”(Y/N)! Jughead’s been beaten up by some ghoulies, I need help!“Betty said, sounding concerned.
"Fuck, okay. Uh, I’m on my way."You said as you hung up. You grabbed your ball cap and slipped it on as you headed out.
Betty and the others were all at Pop’s as she hung up the phone. "Well?” Toni asked as Fangs was leaned over the back of the booth.
“She’s on her way."Betty said as Jughead took a breath.
"Let’s just hope my trailer is still in living condition by the time it’s over."Jughead stated as Ronnie patted his back reassuringly.
"Jughead? Betty?” You asked as you hurried into the trailer, it was empty. Which now you recall, That wasn’t Jughead’s bike in the driveway.
“Sorry, they’re not here."An all too familiar voice said as the door shut behind you with a lock.
"What the Hell?"You cussed as you turned around, there he stood. The boy who literally recked your world.
"Hey."He said quietly as you tried to walk past him.
That however didn’t work as the strong Serpent member pulled you back"Let me out of here, Sweet Pea."You said, glaring at hi.
"Sorry Princess, no can do."Sweet Pea said as you felt shivers go down your spine. You loved to hear his nickname for you. Yet at this point you just wanted to rip his throat out.
"Don’t you dare fucking call me that!"You snapped as you shoved him off.
"Come on, don’t be like that."He said as you felt tears form in your eyes.
You Rose your hand and slapped him across the face, as hard as you could. He just stood there, turning back to face you. "I deserved that."Sweet Pea mumbled as he rubbed his cheek.
You pushed him back away from your body to avoid any contact. "You deserve way worse, you dick.” You glared as he stumbled backwards. He stopped as you went to smack him again, this time he caught your hand as you tried to pull your hand back from him. Instead he just pulled you to him.
“Let go, Sweet Pea."You stated as he shook his head.
"Not until you hear me out."He said as you freed your hand.
"There isn’t anything for me to hear out! I’m a mistake, I don’t mean anything, Remember? I’m just some Northside play toy."You recalled, those words making you hurt all over again.
Sweet Pea shook his head. "It was fake, okay? I had to make Gina believe you didn’t mean anything so I could find out about the damn Jingle Jangle."He tried explaining. You glared before you looked away. "You’re my friend, I would never hurt you on purpose."Sweet Pea said quietly, taking his fingers as he pulled your chin back to make you look at him. You knew in that moment that he was telling you the truth, because not once did he hesitate.
"You jerk, why the hell didn’t you tell me you were going after the Jingle Jangle Creator?"You muttered, slapping his chest.
Sweet Pea held his hands up before chuckling."Because, I didn’t want to put you in danger or at risk of being hurt, Princess."Sweet Pea explained as you crossed your arms.
"Too late for that."You mumbled as he sighed.
"I get it, I’m sorry. Okay? Now can you please just forgive me?"Sweet Pea asked as it was your turn to sigh.
"Of course I forgive you, Sweet Pea."You stated as Sweet Pea went to wrap you up in a hug. "But, I can’t be your friend anymore."You said, you seen the hurt in his eyes. You wanted things to be normal, but you knew they couldn’t be. Because you loved him, and you couldn’t pretend you didn’t.
"What? I- I don’t understand, I told you what I said didn’t mean anything."Sweet Pea said, getting frustrated as he tugged at his own hair.
"We just can’t be friends, okay? It’s that simple."You said quietly, grabbing your purse and walking to the door once more.
Your hand was on the knob but that didn’t last long as he grabbed your arm."Simple? No, simple is actually giving me a damn reason. Not just walking out on me. On our friendship."Sweet Pea snarled, spinning you around as he held both of your arms as you had tears in your eyes.
"We’re different! Okay? You’re a Serpent, Pea. I’m a Northside Princess, We just can’t be friends."You said trying to get out of his grasp.
"It didn’t chase you away when we met, what’s making you run now?"Sweet Pea asked with venom filling his voice.
"I can’t tell you."You said as he glared.
"Tell me."He stated as he pulled you away from the door and stood in front of it. "You’re not Leaving, until I get an answer."Sweet Pea stated.
Yet just as Sweet Pea, you were stubborn."I’m not telling you a thing."You remarked as he groaned.
"Stop acting like you’re two!"Sweet Pea snapped as you rolled your eyes.
"Then get out of my way!"You retorted, it took a few minutes before he shook his head.
"Whatever."Sweet Pea mumbled as he didn’t bother to even make eye contact with you.
It was killing you that this is how things were going to end, but you didn’t have a choice. You walked out of Jughead’s trailer as the group was outside, leaning against their cars."Happy?"You annoyingly spat as you brushed past a concerned Betty, who you just shrugged her off as you got into your car. This time you glanced back, just to see an angry Sweet Pea slamming Jughead’s door. You drove off that night, you didn’t have any intentions of going back over the south side of the tracks..

I’m so sorry it took so long, school hasn’t been the best to me and I’ve been sick a lot. I hope this long post somewhat makes up for it. I promise that the third part will be up to finish this mini-fiction up! @southsidequeenie @dazhane @m-a-u-r-aa @bethers85

Open the Window (Goodbyes May 4th)
He hated this place. Of course anyone that isn’t walking out with a baby hates hospitals. The florescent lights, and the smell of cleaning products always put him on edge. He couldn’t help but think that this wasn’t a place of healing as much as a place where life ended. This was the place where his Mother died, and now it was going to take his Father.
He walked in to the hospital room the soft beeping from the machinery and labored breathing were the only sounds. In the bed his father laid asleep. It was hard to see him like this. When he thought of his father he remembered the giant man that held him over his head, and let him mess up his hair and then would act surprised for him when he looked in the mirror.  Mark could hardly recognize the slim green figure in the hospital bed.  Garfield Logan was never a large man, but the cancer and its treatments had reduced him to less than hundred pounds. His once bright green eyes had sunken into his face. His hair once hunter green was now silver and thin like a threadbare towel.
“Dad, Can you hear me?”
Garfield Logan’s eyes slowly opened.
“Mark?”
“Yea Dad” Mark forced a smile “how are you doing?”
“What time is it?”
“It’s about four in the afternoon”
“You got here at a good time. If I can get that window open I was planning  to take a fly across the bay.  I could use some fresh air.” His voice choked out.
“Sure Dad”  Mark agreed knowing that he hasn’t been able to change shape for the last year, and for the last month could barely walk.
“Maybe instead I will turn into a mouse, go along the hallways, tell me do woman still wear skirts? I always liked a nice set of legs.” he said with slow creeping smile.
“Dirty old man”
“And I am getting older and dirtier by the minute” he laughed. “The good thing about getting old it’s amazing what you can get away with. Most people just think I am confused or senile.  My body might be falling apart but I am as sharp as I ever was”
Mark could almost hear ‘Yea somewhere between pudding and warm cheese’  in his mother’s voice.  Marks parents were always like that,  always jabbing at each other, verbal sparring. You wouldn’t believe that they had been together since they were teenagers, and married for almost 50 years. One minute they were arguing, the next they would be in each other’s arms.
“Maybe you should stay in this afternoon, it looks like rain anyway”
“And Rae would be pissed if I went out and got a new girlfriend. Well since you’re here then I will” he consented. “Is Sam here? did you bring Rachel?”
“Just me this time”
He looked into son’s eyes “I am that close aren’t I?”
Mark couldn’t find the right words. The ones the doctors chose to use did not offer him any comfort. He couldn’t imagine they would help his father.
“Mark I raised you not to lie to me”  he said taking his sons hand  "Also you are really bad at it, and I take that as a sign of good parenting"
“Hours, You might make it to tomorrow morning”  Mark said with his eyes closed as if saying them was going to kill him right then and there and he didn’t want to see it.
“Good”
“Dad? No-” Mark started but his father waved his hand to silence him.
“My affairs are in order.  We have all known this has been coming for a while. In a way it’s been a blessing” He said clearing his throat.  "Do you remember when my friend Vic passed?  Had no will, it was an amazing mess for his girls I was not going to leave that for you and Sam"
Mark didn’t know what to say, he didn’t know what he was going to say to his wife or his daughter, no matter what the Doctors had said the idea that his father was not going to be there just did not seem real. Till now.
“Dad I really don’t care about your stuff-”
“Mark I am ready.” he stated. “This has been a good life but I miss your mother so much.” his voice was ragged “I can feel it, she is waiting for me. She’s probably going to be angry that I am so late.  So I am going to blame you.  She could never stay mad at you.”
He was still joking. Mark could almost see his father looking tough his memories like flipping tough a photo album in his head.
“We are so proud of you, do you know that.”
“You and Mom were heroes. You guys saved the world. I am just a guy that designs buildings”
“You listen to me.” He said a new hardness in his voice “My whole life has been about beating the odds.  I was not expected to live when that monkey bit me.  I spent my life putting myself in danger. I have taken on monsters and criminals and supervillains.  I have been shot, shocked, burned, stabbed, and beaten to a pulp. My back is a subway map of scars. I have taken on the Devil himself, and I got your mother to marry me.”  Another round of ragged coughing followed Mark wondering if he should get help but his father would not let go of his hand.
“But you were it Mark!  Your father has DNA alphabet soup your mother is half demon the odds of us having you was winning the lottery while getting hit by lighting. ” Mark could feel his father’s fingers tighten around his “You are the miracle Mark”
Another round of coughing came and a deep intake of breath.
“We got the chance to raise you, see you graduate, see you marry Sam, have Rachel.” He pointed at his face “Look at me I am a shriveled green raisin. Do you know how many of the people I have worked with didn’t make it to 40?”  He closed his eyes and laid back into his pillow.  "On top of all that I got to spend nearly 48 years married to the love of my life. Trust me nothing tops all that.“
“I wish Mom was here. She would know what to do”  Make said quietly.  He could picture her there standing on the other side of the bed.  She would put her hands on her husband’s face and she would heal him. Just like she did for him every time he had a scrape or a bruise, or that time he broke his left arm after falling out of a tree.  If Mom was here she could fix this! Screamed in his mind.
“No Mark” His father pulled him out of his head. “I wish she was here too, but this is my time.”
“I miss her Dad, I don’t want to lose you too”
“She at times was cold, impatient, neat freak and stubborn as a mule and I should know, I have been a mule. She was also strong, giving, her mind was as sharp as her tongue. ” His eyes eased closed  "She was truly extraordinary and I miss hearing her voice. I can close my eyes and see her in her chair in the bedroom a book in her hands. She would read to me. It was the first things we did that was intimate. It didn’t matter what it was or what language hearing her voice made my head quiet. She would let me lay in her lap as a cat, and stroke my fur and I would listen to her. When she found a passage that got her interested or excited I could hear it warming her words. It was almost as good as her rubbing my fur”
“Mom was the neat freak?”  he asked
“Every time I leave my socks on the floor, or a dish in the sink I can hear her scold me. Even after she passed.” He laughed “I would sometimes do it just hear that.  But I kept the place neat, like she kept it, it made it easier to think she was going to walk through the door again. You know sometimes I would brew up a pot of that tea she loved just to smell it. ”
“I make that tea sometimes. Rachel likes it. She not going to understand this.”
“Children don’t understand death, I am an old man and I barley understand it. ”
“Yeah, but I thought that was because you’re not that bright.” the words slipped out of his lips.  He was going to apologize but his father’s chest started shaking with laughter.
“You are your mother’s son!” Came out between small chuckles. “Tell Rachel that I am going to be with her Grandmother, that we both love her, and she can have the old game station”
“My daughter lover of retro video games”
“My son the real hero of the family that keeps stone age technology running.  Also tell Sam that the library is hers, You mom loved having a daughter in law that loved books as much as she did.  I know she will take good care of them”
“I should have brought them…”
“No, I don’t want Rachel to remember me like this, and she is going to need her mother. Sides I wanted a word with my boy.”
They just sat there quietly, Mark holding onto his father’s hand.
“Mark?”
“Yea Dad”
“Open the window”
Mark was frozen statue still not sure what to do.
“Mark trust me just open it,  the air is stale in here, all I can smell is my old sweat and antiseptic I want to smell the ocean, the rain, please.”
Mark knew that look in his eye.  It was the look he had when he was going to do something nuts.  It was the look he had when he pulled him out of school so he could introduce him to the Green Lantern.  It was the look he had when he would show up at the house unannounced with toys for Racheal. Or that he and Mom were just going to pick a direction and go and be gone for weeks sending pictures back from their latest adventure.
He also knew that when his father made up his mind about something he was committed.  Mark knew that if he didn’t open that window his father would find away.  He got up slowly and walked over to the awning window. The pane of glass hinged only on the top was meant only to let air in it only opened a few inches.  He stood there taking in a deep breath, taking in the scent of the storm that was brewing outside.
“Much better” Garfield breathed.  "Thank you Mark"
“Dad, you need anything else.”
“Could you go find that Nurse, the young blond one.” Garfield said with a smile.
“Dad?” he asked wondering if he was making a joke.
“I am serious, my left leg is doing that thing again,  she will know what I am talking about.”
“Ok” Mark said reluctantly as he left the room to go to the nurses station. He found two older woman and a young man. None of them knew about a blond nurse working in the ward.
When Mark came back to his father’s room the bed was empty. The window was still open and the staff had no idea where he had gone.  Mark didn’t know what to think. That somehow his father was now flying over the water? Or maybe Mom had come to get him.  History will remember Beast Boy the green hero that could turn into animals.  Mark and his family will, remember Garfield Logan a husband, father and grandfather who made bad jokes, gave his granddaughter pony rides and loved his family fiercely.
“Your late”
“Mark’s fault!”
“No its not, you got too caught up playing with Rachel.”
“I couldn’t help it. She’s cute, and she takes after her grandmother.”
“She had you wrapped around her little finger. ”
“So did her grandmother.”
“Azar,I missed arguing with you.”
“Mama take me home, and please don’t leave me ever again”.
This was a story that has been sitting with me for a long time. I was going to do the other prompt from this but when I wrote it out if felt forced. Also this is also my first attempt at something that is not pure fluff. I like to think of these characters as real people. Well real people die, I would like to think they would after a good long life with a happy family. That is why I do love these fanfics, we get to add or expand the facets of the characters that might not be explored in the books or cartoons.  Also I think that is why that years later why were still writing about them, these were not cookie cutter characters designed to sell action figures, they had depth.

Ravensedge is a mighty kingdom perched high on the Elinway mountains. The king’s residence in the Sparrington Fort had been an impenetrable fortress for generations. The old king, Alfred, had died leaving only his daughter – Princess Anne. With no male heir, Alfred had made a selection amongst his trusted Knights Guard as a suitable successor. Sir William Raleigh had been the most obvious choice. William was a noble knight, a learned man and if the rumours were to be believed, already held the heart of the fair princess. However, to the astonishment of the kingdom, Alfred chose instead Sir Henry Deveraux to be his son in law and therefore king of Ravensedge. Henry too was a fierce knight but he had always struggled to best William in tournaments. Henry focused on his accomplishments more than his learning. Anne didn’t care too much for him either. Something had inexplicably changed Alfred’s mind. The wave of support Alfred had shown towards Henry spread. Anne married him and he was crowned king. Like a creeping curse the people of Ravensedge followed Henry without question. Only Henry himself knew how he came to be on the throne and he would show no mercy to those who would uncover the truth.
It was a warm day in Ravensedge. The sun was high and strong. A cool breeze flowed down the mountain to the luscious greenery and the Wilton Woods that lay at the bottom. King Henry was holding court in the Kings Hall. It was a long room with thin slits for windows. The floors were a heavy marble. Henry sat on the throne of Ravensedge as his subjects brought their concerns to him. The queen’s chair beside him was vacant.
Henry could see that Sir William was eager to speak so he leaned his head on his hand, stifling a yawn and ushered him forward.
“You look a little anxious, Sir William,” said the king. The gold of the crown that circled Henry’s dark feathery hair glinted in what little light the room allowed.
William raised his chin and stood proudly. He would always be Henry’s closest rival, even if no one seemed to remember it so. “It’s been several weeks since the death of King Alfred. It was always his wish to demonstrate the might of Ravensedge across the kingdoms. Now would be the best time to do this. If Your Majesty agrees that a suitable time of mourning has passed.”
A smile broke on Henry’s thin lips. Before Alfred’s travel away from the mortal coil the people of the court barely looked at Henry twice. He was of no noble blood and fought tirelessly to be taken into the Knight’s Guard. Now that they asked his permission for everything he was given a great deal of satisfaction.
“You’re suggesting that we go to war?” asked Henry. “To what end?”
As the king’s dark eyed focus narrowed on him, William ran his fingers through his thick blonde hair nervously. “Imperialism, Majesty, pure and simple.”
Henry laughed. “I like the way you think Sir William. I have always wished to see the kingdoms of Navaria, our closest neighbours, draped in the black and yellow of Ravensedge. It would also be quite a boon to have the wealth of Elgany at our disposal.”
William’s gaze dropped to the vacant chair. “Will the queen not be joining us?”
Henry felt a flutter in his stomach. He was angry what he should be asked such a question.
“She needs her rest,”he replied, probably saying more than he should have. “Pregnant women can be terribly fussy. Only her own maids will see her until she gives birth to my son.” The court was watching him. Their judgemental stares caused his own to lower to the ground. “You impudent knave!” he barked. “You have no right to ask of the queen.”
William bowed low. “I’m so sorry Your Majesty. I meant no offence.”
Henry stood as tall as he could. His chest heaved. “You have overstepped your bounds too many times. I will have your head if it ever happens again.”
***
When the court had cleared Henry told his aides that he wished for some time alone.
“I’m not to be disturbed,” he warned.
“Of course, Majesty,” said the young squire. He was an apple cheeked young boy who hailed from a long noble lineage. Henry had never learned his name. The boy dashed off to see that the knights and nobles met the king’s demands. Henry removed his crown and sighed. He wiped the sweat from his brow. The crown was a much heavier burden than he ever imagined.
Through the Kings Hall was a narrower corridor that led to the south west of the fort. Along the corridor lined images of previous Ravensedge kings, watching Henry with judgemental stares like those of his court.
‘What do they know?’ grunted Henry to himself. ‘They had the throne handed to them by birth. They didn’t have to struggle as I did to become king. Kissing the arse of some old fool just so he’ll give me a second glance and perhaps consider letting me marry his daughter.’
His thoughts carried him through the corridor and up to the second floor of the south west tower. He had the only key to the room. He kept it on him at all times. The long, black, iron key was too important to be entrusted to inferior hands. The door opened with a soft click. As it swung open he was met with a shrill shriek. Anne had thrown herself in the corner. Her flowing, white gown was stained with blood. The stain was heaviest around her pregnant stomach. She was holding a silver dagger in one hand, the other was splayed like the claws of a cat. Her magnificent hair was in disarray. She looked more like a mad witch than a queen.
Henry pulled the dagger out of her clutches. “What have you done!?”
“I will never bear your child!” she screamed. “My womb is for regal children and will never be infected with the dirt of your seed!”
Henry slapped her. She stumbled backwards.”I am your king,” he roared. “You will bear me one hundred children if I order you to do so.”
“My father never wanted you,” she spat venomously. “You are a useless knight then and a joke of a king now. My father wanted William.”
Henry threw her onto the floor. “I am the only one who knows you are here. Where did you get this dagger?”
Anne was breathing heavily. At first she refused to answer, until finally she said, “I will never tell you.”
Henry growled, “Now I have to fetch a doctor. You are lucky you didn’t kill yourself you stupid whore of a woman.”
As Henry locked the door again he heard crash as Anne threw her piss pot against the other side.
When Alfred had first chosen Henry as his successor, Anne had been as compliant as the rest of them. Now she remembered the struggles Henry had trying to prove himself against William. Whatever bewilderment the kingdom had fallen under it was wearing thin. Henry was running out of time.
***
It had been a trip to the surrounding Wilton Woods where everything had changed for Henry. He had been frustrated by his constant humiliations trying to beat William, the king’s failing to acknowledge him and Anne’s refusal to offer him a second glance. He met a tall, skulking creature named Benedict there who offered him the chance for all his dreams to come true. A month had passed and all his dreams were beginning to take the shape of nightmares. He had to find Benedict again. He had to make Anne succumb to him and have his child. With a son of true royal blood his rule would never be questioned again.
He waited at the same spot he had first met the unusual man, until darkness began to charge across the sky. He was preparing to leave when he heard a rustling in the foliage of the forest floor. There was Benedict again. He was so pale he almost glowed in the dusk.
“I get the sense I don’t have a happy customer,” he said with an underlying shrill malice. A wide grin spread from ear to ear.
“Anne hates me. My knights want to go to war. It won’t be long before they all remember.”
Benedict emitted a throaty laugh. “You were warned that ambition can be toxic. You can only control people for a time. Sooner or later their minds become their own again.”
Henry became flustered. “I need more of the drink you gave me. I need to secure my place as king and then it won’t matter if they have their own minds. They won’t be able to question my crown.”
Benedict stretched out his arm and turned the palm to the sky. A small glass vial appeared containing luminescent green liquid. “Now I want you to be sure of this. The last dosage left quite a bitter taste.”
Henry snatched the vial and gulped down the contents. Benedict watched him intently. “Aren’t you going to ask what the price is? Ambition like that doesn’t come for free.”
Henry climbed onto his waiting steed. “If it will make Anne bring me a son and controls my knights I don’t care what the price is.”
“I’ll seek you out when payment is due,” called Benedict as the king rode back to his castle. “You will care for the price,” he grinned. “And you will pay it.”
