#I love that Usagi is weak and a crybaby

Hi....if you don't mind, can I ask something from BNHA? What do you think are Midoriya and Bakugou’s greatest personality strengths and weaknesses? Why? What do you love about their dynamic? Sorry if you've answered these questions before.....Thanks....
No need to apologize, if anything, thank you for asking me anything! I tried to keep my response spoiler free and, since I had trouble clarifying what I value as strengths vs weaknesses when I wrote in prose, I broke it out below with the Why's highlighted for simplicity. Still a pretty long read so buckle up, buttercup!
Tumblr media
I will probably never have a reason to use this gif otherwise but feel this AU is hilarious and important.
PERSONALITY
I recently thought about the headspace of these characters here and here.
Midoriya Strengths
I feel like this goes hand in hand with the crybaby hero trope but he has an incredibly strong sense of justice where he's compelled to do what's right even at the expense of doing something that would be otherwise frowned upon. This trend toward Chaotic Good keeps things interesting.
A forgiving heart with an enduring spirit that allows him to seek understanding with those who oppose him because he tries to see them as people in need of saving as well, where possible. Same could be said for Tanjiro Kamado or Usagi Tsukino I feel like, so, just MC vibes. But the limits of this are certainly tested.
He's unapologetically a little weirdo who's finally seeing his dreams take shape after years of being miserable and he does absolutely nothing to keep his cool about it. Kid is unabashedly a nerd with his incessant muttering and social awkwardness and Class 1A is just like, "well he's our fanboy". He's secretly being coached by his idol who is a teacher at his school and his dorm looks like a shrine to said teacher. Like... bro, get it together. I highkey feel like Midoriya is basically y/n if y/n finally got their Censored Wizarding School letter.
Midoriya Weaknesses
He's overwhelmingly naive when it comes to hero society despite being a fanboy of it. It takes time and a lot of heartache for him to get to a point where he can think critically about those he admires or the systemic failures within hero society. Simply, he's just a kid. Can't really blame him for not knowing any better but I think it really emphasizes how far off his dream of being a hero really was.
He's hardwired for martyrdom. Given enough time, anyone can rationalize breaking bones to master OFA when Recovery Girl is like right there, sure (still unhinged behavior but go off). But, considering the great mind he has for strategy, his default setting being a willingness to sacrifice himself and his body is dissonant. I think it's compounded by a desperation to measure up to All Might and he eventually grows from overt displays of this over time. Bakugo being captured at the training camp and his dissatisfaction with being incapable of doing anything about it was the impetus, but, sometimes, I wonder if the martyrdom stems from lack of other options or just having spent so long being ground down by his quirklessness that it's just second nature for him to think he has to suffer. Lowkey, Bakugo is wired the same way. This weakness just kind of makes me sad from all the things I think this complex stems from.
Bakugo Strengths
He is a perfectionist with a one track mind. Bakugo knows what he wants and works towards it relentlessly. This nerd is incredibly disciplined (hello senior citizen bedtime) with an aptitude for combat that doesn't stem from being a hero family legacy. Which means, any conditioning that made him good stock for UA came from his individual contribution as someone who is driven to be #1. Not to mention, he doesn’t have All Might personally coaching him so any growth yielded from constructive criticism while at UA is a product of Aizawa’s lessons, a sprinkle of Best Jeanist and Bakugo figuring things out himself. Case in point, learning from All Might that his “Win to Save” mentality needed to be tempered with a “Save to Win” mentality to be successful. He cultivates his own personal growth which allows him to be more communicative and slightly less hot-headed to enact a winning battle strategy in the exercise against Class 1B. Not to mention, Midoriya is getting a lot of real life experience that Bakugo isn’t but he manages to keep pace with Deku and still embody a determination to not accept any casualties (RE: Midoriya taking down Stain, taking down Muscular at the training camp, fighting and surviving Overhaul, taking down Gentle Criminal and everything that follows the initial Paranormal Liberation Front takedown).
As best he can, he cares about the people around him. You cannot accept Shoto Todoroki's shortcomings when he first got to UA and condemn Bakugo for his when they are arguably both products of hostile upbringings. That being said, in his own way and through the limited perspective of an unreliable narrator, he respects Ochako Uraraka as his equal where other boys of Class 1A are shown to not view girls as formidable adversaries (during the sports fest and the face off with Class 1B), Aizawa and Denki praise him for his strength of character, he makes it a point to pull aside that kindergartener who was teetering down the same path he followed during the extra provisional lessons, he goes out of his way to protect Class 1A during the Cultural Festival, and he is notably less of a jerk to Todoroki considering his home life. Since it's Bakugo, that care and concern just looks a bit different. Where Todoroki's character growth is staked in how he cultivates relationships with Class 1A (which isn't from a point of outright antagonism) and working to forgive his family, Bakugo's growth is tied more intimately to Midoriya whose first person perspective is a bit limited or biased.
He's hilarious to me. Like, sir, is there anything you respect? He's even a brash asshole to All Might, his idol. Where Midoriya has tunnel vision when it comes to All Might, I think Bakugo is able to reconcile the fact that All Might is still fallible while remaining in awe of him. It's why he keeps his secret after all although even he admits it’s not for All Might. Plus, as far as deuteragonists go, he's perfectly incendiary and goads Midoriya (and subsequently their classmates) to level up which Aizawa notes is what makes Class 1A something special.
Bakugo Weaknesses
Hand in hand with that last strength, for all of Bakugo's barking, he has issues with self worth and insecurity. While the viewer really only witnesses this when he's lashing out, it becomes clear this is something he deals with internally as it's a big factor in why he and Midoriya are at odds. Though Midoriya struggles with the same issues, Bakugo’s manifests violently and make him a ticking time bomb until his emotions finally explode.
He is immature and emotionally constipated. He is hard pressed and shitting diamonds before he'll ever admit his remorse for how he treated Midoriya, how he may not be good enough, or any other uncomfortable feeling that isn’t strictly confident superiority. His inability to communicate emotions and frustration to do so is what makes him unlikeable to people who don't bother to understand the nuance of his character and how that relates to Midoriya.
DYNAMIC
I tend to process things a lot better when read vs. watched so reading the manga and appreciating the exposition into their relationship while still being deprived of most of it has been fun to pick apart because we’re given Midoriya’s perspective and forced to interpret beyond what he’s able to do at the time. It's easy to forget the story tends to be from a first person perspective so we're left with some legwork to read between the lines using other characters (my favorite being Aizawa) who offers additional insight into the unbiased reality of their characters and, at times, their relation to one another.
They make each other better. As stated previously, Aizawa has observed that their rivalry not only draws out the best in them but it also forces those around them to be better as well.
By design, they are two halves of the same whole. All Might recognizes that, with Midoriya’s “Save to Win” and Bakugo’s “Win to Save” mentalities, their imitation of him is incomplete. You can’t have one without the other in order to be successful and he even proposes that they would make an unstoppable team.
They understand one another. Midoriya provides insight into Bakugo during the Sports Festival to Uraraka which Aizawa explains better. Bakugo (implied spoiler?) tells two mentors that he knows Deku best and is able to pinpoint what antics he's gotten himself into, too. While shown to be largely non-communicative, they have a penetrating understanding of one another that Horikoshi hasn't really explained. From our perspective, they were childhood friends and then they simply weren't around the time that Deku didn't get his quirk (so around 4 or 5). So how do they continue to understand one another so implicitly? I'm anticipating a big reveal into more of their childhood in coming chapters. If you're caught up in the manga, you see we've already gotten a taste (if you're not, mind the spoiler warnings in the links above).
They respect one another. I know this seems unfounded considering how shitty Bakugo is shown to be to Midoriya BUT, when Bakugo encourages Kirishima that there's strength in being unrelenting during Kiri's moment of insecurity.. I very much think that he's thinking of Midoriya. Meanwhile, unique from the reasons above, Midoriya is undeterred from engaging with Bakugo despite his mistreatment because he's determined to be recognized by him and stand shoulder to shoulder with him. This is actually found to be something that they both obsess over. They want to be one another's equals.
They imitate one another. Deku incessantly imitates Bakugo. From his fight style which Iida and others have remarked to his trash talking when he wants to be victorious as he observed himself. Bakugo mutters/strategizes like Deku and I also feel like when I read the manga I recall thinking about how we focus on Deku imitating Bakugo but his AP Shot put me in the mind of Deku's Full Cowling. I'll have to dig through the notes I took while reading and continue my MHA Manga With Me posts but they are frequently shown to make similar faces and are constantly looking to one another for inspiration. Horikoshi has, throughout the story, linked them in this way. While not readily apparent (I'm chalking it up due to Midoriya's POV blind spot), we also see this between Kirishima and Mina (search "Kirishima v Mina" to get to the good stuff), Mirio and Tamaki, Ochako and Midoriya (but a sprinkle of confusion with Toga). @dekacchannn talks about this here.
To one another, they are worth saving. They both have a tendency of being a little self-sacrificing. Quirkless Midoriya throws himself at the Sludge Monster for Kacchan's sake, he goes back and grabs Bakugo's unconscious body during their exam, he runs on pure adrenaline at the training camp to go after Bakugo despite shattered bones and.. the list continues. For all of Bakugo's strength, most people assume he can take care of himself. Worse, many people assume he's simply irredeemable, with a temperament that teeters on villainy as discussed when he was kidnapped by the League of Villains. But Midoriya will always have an outstretched hand ready for Kacchan. Being mindful of spoilers, Bakugo will break and crack if it means he will Win to Save. He proves this when Deku is threatened because, despite his newfound power and exponential growth, despite being The Chosen One... at the end of the day, he needs someone to take him into account because he's simply "screwed up in the head" to do it himself and Bakugo knows this better than anyone.
Thank you for your patience in reading this rant and your curiosity in asking! I hope someone kisses you on both cheeks today because you made my day =)
Your question didn't seem ship specific so I didn't answer with that in mind. If I interpreted your question incorrectly, feel free to let me know though you can probably infer from the above.

Every time someone tries to pull "X is a ripoff of sailor moon" I will pull out my trump card
Because SHERA did it first!! Let me explain:
- Normal blonde haired blue eyed girl who finds out she's a magical princess
- scratch that normal girl who is the last person expected to be a hero (usagi being a crybaby, adora worked for the horde)
- team of color-coded female characters with distinct skills and personalities and are even royalty themselves
- Transformation sequence
- Animal sidekick who can talk (well the og swift wind relied on telepathy but you get the picture)
- Mystical guide who is ✨immortal✨ (Queen Serenity, Angella and Light Hope)
- Meant to be a distaff counterpart to a male character (sailor moon being inspired from Super Sentai, which mostly catered to boys)
- Evil female henchmen with their distinct looks, personalities and skills
- Main female villain with magic powers who plots bts, has darkness powers and whose identity may hint to something more (Beryl, Shadow Weaver)
- Theme is a mix of science and magic along with celestial and elemental motifs
- That one male character who relies solely on natural skill kinda had a rep for being "useless" but in reality a flip on damsel cliches, and has romantic theming (Bow with hearts, Mamoru and roses)
- Another male character who is charismatic and has secrets but ultimately is a true ally to the heroine + odd romantic connection (Seahawk who i think actually was Adora's love interest; Usagi and Seiya's disguise)
- Trio of magical girls who all share a stellar motif (Star Sisters, Sailor Starlights)
- Main male villain who serves as general/leader for a bigger villain (Beryl's generals, Hordak)
- The conflict revolves around a war of some kind
- Focal point it femininity is a strength not weakness
- Plucky pinkhaired girl who hails from lunar royalty and fluctuates between useless and competent (Chibiusa and Glimmer)
Anymore similarities I missed? Comment! This isn't me dunking on sailor moon btw it's just me pointing out such ridiculous notion!✌

My Top 10 Favorite Anime Heroines by DarkChild316
Being a hero isn’t easy, but someone’s gotta do it! And these ladies have shown to be just as capable as their male counterparts. Now I’ve already done a list showing everyone “My Top 10 Anime Villainesses”, but I figured: “Hey the good girls deserve some love too,” so I decided to give you guys my list of my Favorite Anime Heroines as well. So, with that in mind, here’s my list:
#10. Saeko Busujima (Highschool of the Dead): This is an anime that will give you plenty of two things in abundance…boobs and zombies! While it may seem like your run-of-the-mill apocalyptic fanservice anime, among the well-proportioned ladies is this kendo warrior who’s more than capable of holding her own against any foe and would fit right in with even the most old-school samurai-themed anime. When the dead start to walking most of the cast usually reach for a form of firearms, not this lady who prefers to slice apart the undead with the greatest of discipline and precision, whether it be with her signature bokken or her deadly Murata-tou sword. There’s no denying that Saeko’s the ideal companion we’d want on our side for a zombie apocalypse.
#9. Touka Kirishima (Tokyo Ghoul): Living as a ghoul isn’t easy, especially when you’re trying your damnest to retain what little remains of your humanity. Starting off as a cold, yet collected individual, Touka found shelter in both the horrors of her dark past and her constant hunger for flesh in her day job at a café as a waitress which serves other ghouls and as a hangout stop for ghouls. While she grew warmer as her relationship with one Ken Kaneki grew, she’s not without her bestial side, possessing an abject hatred for the CCG after they killed her parents. In a series where everyone seems to be on the edge of insanity and turning into a rampaging, bloodthirsty monster, Touka is one of the few characters genuinely fighting for a chance at a peaceful life.
#8. Riza Hawkeye (Fullmetal Alchemist): Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye is undoubtedly one of the best female anime characters of all time and for good reason, she is truly the perfect soldier. As both an Amestrian State Military’s officer as well as Colonel Roy Mustang’s bodyguard, Riza Hawkeye is a dangerous sharpshooter and firearms specialist. From the outside she can seem strict and even a little cold, but those close to her know that there’s much more to her than her strict no-nonsense attitude, including a courteous nature in the presence of her allies and a desire to protect those she holds dear. Beneath the strict persona is a kind soul who understands the difficulty of carrying a heavy burden and let’s not forget…she’s a true badass in every sense o the word!
#7. Erza Scarlett (Fairy Tail): She went from child slave to arguably one of the strongest mages in all of Fiore. All while battling against S-Class mages, terrifying demons, and even her own psychotic mother, now that’s dedication folks! Forced by her possessed childhood friend to build the Tower of Heaven, she manages to escape her captivity and make her way to Fairy Tail, where she would soon rise to become one of Fairy Tail’s youngest S-Class mages and one of the most truly badass fighters in Fairy Tail’s ranks. With her magical ability known as Re-Quip, she has an unlimited number of weapons and armors at her disposal, each possessing their own devastating abilities. She’s a stoic warrior with a soft heat and a dark past, and you can bet your ass that she’ll fight to defend her Nakama to the bitter end.
#6. Ryuko Matoi (Kill la Kill): Her choice of armor may be a bit on the revealing side but going against this rebel isn’t the smartest idea if you value your life. You’re not likely to find a more stubborn soul in this absolutely whacky series and trust me…NONE of these characters are on the subtle side of things. In search of her father’s killer, Ryuko takes up the sentient life-fiber uniform Senketsu, and openly battles the dictatorship that is the Student Council. Stubborn as hell, Ryuko will always stand up to anyone who gets in her way, no matter how badly the odds are stacked against her. How can you not love someone with that kind of drive!
#5. Saber (Fate/stay night): Before she became a hero in the endless Holy Grail Wars, Saber was actually Artoria Pendragon, known throughout history as King Arthur, the mythical King who united Britain. As the Saber-class servant, Artoria generally tries to hide her identity in battle by using an invisible sword. When pushed, she can brandish Excalibur instead though, a sword she wields with unmatched skill and can do long-range attacks as easily as close-range. With her holy sword, and her “Mana Burst” ability, she is one of the most powerful Servants. Saber is loved by fans worldwide for good reason: she is kind, valiant, and fierce, all traits that make for one divine heroine. None would mind putting the fate of the world in this blonde beauty's hands.
#4. Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan): Attack on Titan's Mikasa is one of those reserved, stoic characters who doesn't speak very often and seems to be stuck in her own head. After all the trauma she’s experienced living under the looming terror of Titans and the carnage she witnessed while part of the Survey Corps, not to mention the brutal murder of her biological parents by criminals, it would be difficult to come out unscathed. Perhaps it’s endurance that is one of Mikasa’s most relatable traits. Despite her often-cynical comments about the world around her, she manages to retain her humanity. Mikasa herself said, “This world is cruel. And yet... so beautiful.” The stereotypical boy-saves-girl gender roles that play out in media are also very much reversed when it comes to her relationship with Eren, which is a refreshing and welcome change of pace to see, though her protectiveness of him seems a little unhealthy at times. On top of everything mentioned, she’s also totally ripped.
#3. Asuka Langley Soryu (Neon Genesis Evangelion): I just couldn’t leave out Neon Genesis Evangelion’s Asuka Langey Soryu from this list of awesome female protagonists. Asuka is a classic anime heroine and remains beloved by fans of the show to this day. Asuka is an American teenage girl who serves as an Eva pilot for the Evangelion Project and pilots the Evangelion Unit-02. Asuka was raised in Germany and often swears in German. She was a child prodigy with a college degree at only fourteen years old, but definitely has her human flaws. She has a temper and is obsessed with being the best at everything she does. Despite these flaws, Asuka is hilarious in her own way and has the kind of confidence and pride you rarely see in a young girl. She knows she can do her job well and isn't afraid to tell you about it. Asuka is relatable in that she is stubborn and often has a hard time properly expressing her feelings and vulnerability to others. Her eventual nervous breakdown shines a light on her humanity-- she is not a perfect person and she is still a child forced to do a job that no child should be forced to do.
#2. Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell): Major Motoko Kusanagi is one of the primary protagonists of the popular Ghost in the Shell franchise of manga, films, and animated series. Motoko is a cyborg who works as a field commander for Public Security Section 9 on the Japanese National Public Safety Commission. Motoko is a very physically strong and incredibly intellectual who that is quick-witted and an excellent hacker. But put a firearm in her hand, and she’s especially deadly. As a child, Motoko was comatose following an airplane accident. After her health began to steadily decline, her consciousness was put into a  "full-body prosthesis,” an augmented-cybernetic human body. Motoko causes us to question exactly what makes us human. She is an emotional, stoic, strong woman who fights for the citizens she protects, yet she lives inside an artificial body. But her greatest use is as a platform to speak on the nature of humanity in a technological age. She's a human mind that has been stuck in an artificial body since childhood, and her life and trials bring up the age-old question, "What does it mean to be human?"
#1. Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon): You really can’t have a list of awesome female protagonists without including everyone’s favorite schoolgirl superhero: Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon. Usagi is the embodiment of an empowering female in anime in her fearless display of conventional femininity without any implied weakness. Usagi is your typical teenage girl who is all about her friends, food, and cute things, while simultaneously being a badass heroine who cleanses the streets of evil. In the original manga and anime, Usagi was portrayed as reluctant to be a superhero and would often run away from fights and be a crybaby. However, through her careful character development, Usagi becomes a brave, reliable, and confident person who cares deeply for her friends. She becomes a better version of herself without stereotypically “shedding” her girliness. Instead, her femininity becomes a defining feature of hers, deconstructing the idea that being girly makes you weak. On the contrary, Usagi’s girliness makes her funny, relatable, and a good role model for young girls. Usagi set the template for a generation of female heroines for generations to come, and it’s for that reason why she’s well-deserving of my #1 ranking on my list.
So that's my updated list, what did you guys think about it? Love it, hated it? Go on and tell me what you think and let me know who your favorite anime heroines are. See you soon!

I could really go for a kiss out of anger...
Here you go, love. Happy Birthday, this one is all for you and comes with all the hugs!
-
It was one time too many. One time too cruel.
She couldn’t take his gentle touch around her midriff today, the worried, panicked eyes as he’d snatched her up and cradled her too softly and too caring. His shining, tortured eyes as he set her down, his lingering hands.
She couldn’t take it today.
It all flared up on her skin in white-hot anger, in visceral, gutting fury that crawled up her throat and burned her tongue and made the tears boil in her eyes.
She took it all out on Rubeus. For the first time since they’d been up against him and the Ayakashi Sisters, there was something akin to fear in his eyes, or maybe respect.
The girls looked at her warily after he’d fled with Calaveras, and their droid was long dust.
It all sat in her chest and came out her trembling hands and in furious tears, and she was just so angry.
Mako-chan and Rei both called after her in concerned voices as she bolted, jumped up the nearest banister, into the trees and back into the maze of grey buildings. Out.
She didn’t notice the loose shingle, cursed, shrieked, slipped and skidded right off the roof.
Because Usagi was a crybaby and a klutz no matter if she was Sailor Moon, and Mamoru didn’t want her like that. Had maybe never wanted her at all.
She wasn’t perfect, she was no princess, she was no warrior. She was just Usagi.
Even when she braced herself for impact, arms tight across her face, she never ended up falling.
Tuxedo Mask settled her down on her feet in the alley below and looked at her with stern, judging eyes and stared her down.
She stared right back, jaw pressed so tight it hurt, cursing the tears, cursing the shake of her whole body, cursing him.
“What’s wrong, Usagi,” he growled, all tenseness, all accusation. It made it all worse. As if he didn’t know. As if it wasn’t his fault.
It wasn’t fair.
It’s exactly what she ended up shouting at him, though it might have been an angry snarl or even a whisper, she wasn’t entirely sure what her voice was doing. She’d switched to auto-pilot.
“It’s not fair!” she cried.
His sigh was so deep it lifted his shoulders even when it didn’t move the frowny glare from his eyes even a tad, and he ripped his mask off to glare at her harder, or whatever.
“What isn’t fair, Usagi?” he hissed back. As if he was angry too. Angry at it all and the world and that he had to be around her still and it hurt.
She took a step towards him, even when he remained rooted to the spot. He didn’t move when she lifted her balled fist and left it hovering above his heart.
“That you’re still gentle. That you're still the boy I love,” she whispered angrily. “That you keep hurting me.”
His look sobered instantly, but he didn’t move. Not at all. Even less.
“That you broke up with me,” she spat at his chest, her voice little more than a snarl, “and I can’t do anything about it.”
Her fist finally connected with his chest. She wanted to punch. She wanted to so badly. But it was little more than a soft thud, and her fist loosened to stroke above his hammering, angry heart.
Her voice was broken snarling and angry hiccups, the tears were so wrong they made her feel ashamed but they kept spilling. “That you don’t love me anymore and I just have to live with it?!” she screeched, and lifted her hand and this time it was at least a weak, pathetic slap, but a slap anyway.
When she looked up at him, his eyes were full of tears too, and full of shame, and full of regret.
But of course, he didn’t say anything to make it better, and he didn’t take it back.
“It’s not fair, that you can just decide this and I have no choice about it!” she screeched.
“Usako…”
The soft word made her retreat her hand as if burned, and she looked up at him in betrayal.
“It’s not fair!” she whispered, and he nodded with swimming eyes and a quivering chin as if he agreed.
And when she reached up and knocked the stupid hat off his head he didn’t even flinch. And when she reached out again and pulled him down to her by the back of his neck he came pliantly, and when she kissed him, angry and spiteful and biting his lip too hard and attacking his lips too furiously, he kissed her back - too soft and too gentle and full of regret.
He was crying harder than she was. It was his fault, after all.

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon!!!
“Elegance is when the inside is just as beautiful as the outside”
-Coco Chanel
Naoko Takeuchi’s Sailor Moon is one of my favorite manga/anime that I’ve had the pleasure to experience, and although the original series diverges from the manga as well as the Crystal adaptation in that it gets very “Monster of the Week”, one can still see why it’s had so much influence over the years, especially with young women.
In the first episode, we meet Usagi Tsukino, a 14 year old girl that’s late for school and gets bad grades. Part of the reason why Usagi has become such an iconic character over the years is how relatable she is. She has flaws like a real person, but they’re balanced with her real personality. To draw from personal experience, she is crybaby representation, and us crybabies simply do not get enough representation. Nonetheless, Usagi shows kindness to Luna, portraying her kindness to animals, as well as the unspoken cooperation found between women (even if one of those women is a cat). This episode serves to establish Usagi’s character, making her development in the later seasons so much more meaningful.
Before any of that can happen, however, we watch Punishment Awaits! where the young men of Usagi’s school are enchanted, to act upon all of their impulses. Although it goes without saying that women have similar dangerous impulses to men, this episode has a strong message to say on how men and women interact in society. The men turn on each other, Umino and the gang calling out a male teacher on being “incompetent”. When their impulses are released, they lack respect for social rank, and Sailor Moon, an icon of femininity, has to reign them back in. It shows that when their thoughts are uninhibited by social norms and moral regulations, men do what they want without a thought of others.
Now before the men reading rightfully grab their pitchforks, there is a similar message put forth in Learn how to be Skinny from Usagi! where a gym craze takes the town by storm. The women, all concerned with their weights, form an echo chamber that gets increasingly radical, and they begin to lose their filters of politeness and empathy for others. We see the schoolgirls, our heroine included, not masking their negative outlook towards the chubbier girl in the conversation, which is terribly judgmental. Furthermore, when uninhibited, the girls become less rational, Usagi skipping meals until she’s weak. She holds this obsession until her crush tells her that it’s okay to have some meat on her bones. Thus, like a woman having to reign in the fellows in episode 2, a man has to reign in this woman here.
Sailor Moon has a very positive outlook on romantic love, which is shown in many instances as something to be wanted and respected. Usagi’s parents love and respect each other, and seeking love is seen as motivation for self improvement. Thus, the parallel between these two episodes serves a similar message, that of improved harmony and relations between the sexes.
The positive interpretation of a piece made by a woman, for women is missed out on in Newsom’s Girl Power. In her piece, Newsom describes Sailor Moon as an example of “girl power”, meaning women believe they have independence when they still conform to “patriarchal” values and expectations.
The piece seemed extremely America-centric, talking about the problems of American adolescent girls juxtaposed to Sailor Moon, rather than the original audience of Japanese girls. Japan has had a different journey with women’s rights, being a significantly older nation state, but also giving women suffrage a generation later than the United States, so the differences of societies should have been factored in. I truly winced when the author said the protagonist’s name was “Serena Moon”, because this tells that she did her research based off of the original American translation, which is less than ideal.
Furthermore, I could not ignore her statement, “The Sailor Scout characters are sexualized and presented as sexual”. First of all, the girls are 14. Although anime and manga don’t necessarily stray away from sexualization of young girls as they should, I feel this is disrespectful to Takeuchi’s message throughout her work. It disregards the complex characters of each of the Sailor Scouts and their assorted company, the kind that we see in Episode 8. The same characters that Newsom characterizes as “objects that act like subjects” overcome societal expectations to great reward, Usagi befriending Ami despite her friends judging the prodigy out of jealousy.

Sera Myu Ranking - Sailor Moon (1993-2019)
OMG yes I’m finally doing a ranking thing! I have been wanting to do this FOREVER and I’m SO excited!! I decided to do a post instead of a video because I’m too lazy and the new Sera Myu is (hopefully) just behind the corner so I’m going to wait until then and then do a ranking video xD But let’s just get started!
Also, I’m not native English speaker so there might be some spelling or grammatical errors so keep that in mind.
This is also just MY OPINION not anyone else’s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
 10. Marina Kuroki
Tumblr media
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Marina! <3 She is definitely one of the best dancers and singers that Sera Myu has ever had but her acting skills weren't that good for me. She was just overacting too much for me.
 9. Kanae Yumemiya (FIRST IMPRESSIONS ONLY)
Tumblr media
Since we haven't seen her acting as Usagi at all, only singing so it's hard to truly rate her. But what we have seen, she gave me major Fumina-vibes, which isn't a bad thing but she seemed kinda serious to me. She is really beautiful tho <3 (Maybe if we someday get the full recording of Super Live she might rise in this list!)
 8. Fumina Hara
Tumblr media
Okay, let me just say something. Fumina is the reason I fell in love with Sera Myu. This goes waaay back in but the very first time I saw Sera Myu (I was about 8 or something and it was probably Marina's musical or something) and I didn't like it AT ALL. But then a few years later I ran into Kaguya Shima Densetsu and fell in love with (Sera Myu and) Fumina because of how pretty she was! <3 <3 (That's why KSDK is still one of my favorite Sera Myu musical and why Fumina always has a special place in my heart) So she is imo the most beautiful Sailor Moon but to me she wasn't really Usagi as she seemed to struggle on bringing out the goofy crybaby we all love. But she was fantastic as Neo Queen Serenity! <3
 7. Tomomi Kasai (FIRST IMPRESSIONS ONLY)
Tumblr media
Okay, I just want to say that Tomomi is this low only because I haven't seen the full performance of Super Live. But what we have seen, I feel like she is amazing. She already is very Usagi-like so I think she will slay us all. I also love her singing voice (which also fits Usagi <3) And on topof that she also loves Sailor Moon which just makes it all better AND OMG HER COVERS OF LA SOLDIER AND DENSETSU SEITAN 😍
 6. Hotaru Nomoto
Tumblr media
OMG HOTARU MY PRECIOUS BABY 😍 Whenever I see her I just start smiling! You can clearly see that she enjoys being on stage and performing since she looks always so happy! She was able to bring Usagi out on her own way (which I loved) but I think she was more fit for StarS where Usagi is more serious. But she still was really amazing and I love her ❤️ (Also she gave Anza a run for her money with her scream in LMF xD)
 5. Satomi Okubo
Tumblr media
OMG I really struggled on whom I like better, Hotaru or Satomi. But I think Satomi takes the cake. She was really bubbly and very Usagi-like which was amazing ❤️ You could clearly see how much effort was put into it. But sometimes she spoke so quickly that it sounded like she was just speaking gibberish xD Her singing voice wasn't very Usagi-like imo but I still enjoyed it! I think that I still liked her more as Sailor Cosmos (She SLAYED that role!!) (Also I cry every time I watch her graduation in UNV)
 4. Anza (Ooyama)
Tumblr media
QUEEEN I LOVE HER ❤️ ❤️ Her singing was ON POINT (especially during the StarS musicals) But her acting wasn't that good in the first musicals imo. She acted so childish-y that she could have acted as Chibi-Usa (I know that hse has said somewhwere that she wasn't an actress that she was a singer) But it got better towards the end and she SLAYED at StarS and Eien Densetsu and she always manages to crack me during her speech in Eien Densetsu Kaiteiban (which is my FAVORITE musical!) Also gotta give her props for being able to perform with those 10 kg wings on her back xD
 3. Sayuri Inoue
Tumblr media
OMG THIS GURL JUST SNATCHED MY WEAVE WHEN SHE STARTED PERFORMING.
Tumblr media
I haven't been following Nogizaka46 that much or anything (before NogiMyu) but what I have seen was that she seemed really shy so I was kinda worrying that she couldn't really do Usagi but OMG SHE DID SOOOO GOOOOD! Her acting, singing and dancing were all amazing! ❤️ (She also gave Anza a run for her money with her scream of terror)
 2. Mizuki Yamashita
Tumblr media
OMG I LOVE HERRRR ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ SHE DID SO AMAZING LIKE SHE WAS USAGI! So yes I love her xD Her singing was kinda weak but it got better as the musical went on so it didn't bother me that much since her acting was ON POINT Also she gave Anza a run for her money with her scream AND speech during the curtain call omg it was AMAZING and SO HEART-WARMING I CRIED SO MUCH xD
 1. Miyuki Kanbe
Tumblr media
Did anyone NOT see this coming? She IS Usagi! When she was on stage it was Usagi herself was there! I just love her so much ❤️ Her singing was somewhat nasal but imo it fit her so it didn't bother me at all. She was the perfect Usagi to me and I wish she would have stayed longer and perform in other arcs too! May her soul rest in peace ❤️
OHMYGOSH I actually did it YAYYYY
So if anyone has any thoughts or comments I would love to hear them xD

I need to get this thoughts out!
These are My thoughts on Sailor moon. As you seen in My earlier statement I think that the Sailor scout fuku are boring and improper in battle. Heck the Sailor ocs fuku are so much better then Naoko’s that every Senshi should be a copy of Sailor moon. Thoose who make oc make the Sailor fuku fun, intressting and very matching to that they have choosen for their Character. And give then weapons or wand to match the mythology of the planet or element they have choosen Naokoshould have stayed with her prototype designs because they were more fun and intresting. And don’t give me that bullcrap that they have these suit so it Will be easier for them to battle! Because all Pretty Cure groups has giant hair and puffy skirts in battle But they still kick the enemies ass with hand to hand combat unlike the Sailor Senshi! Heck even in Magical spells attack they are weak compared to Pretty cures and other Magical Girls shows attacks. And the only one who can even defeat the enemy is Sailor moon while the other Senshi attacks are like wind against the enemy of the week. So if I have to put the Sailor scouts against other Magical girl shows. Then the Sailor scouts would lose Pretty quickly and not only in Power. But also in combat and tatics. Heck the other Magical girl show must the characters fight to gaim New powers while Sailor moon gets it by the so-called Power of love. Then she gets more Power, New Wands/staffs and New Sailor fuku that makes her more intressting. And in the End she becomes the Queen over earth together with tuxedo mask! While the other Senshi gets very small Changes on their fuku, Weak New attacks, No weapons and becomes Sailor moon meatshields in the future and are not marry to the person they love( Except for Uranus and Neptune) They deserve it to because they are royalty over bigger planet then moon and earth Dammit! Heck the outer Senshi has only two attacks and That’s thanks to the talismans and if they didn’t have them they would only have one. And i don’t how long they would Stand with that if the enemy is stronger. But worst is the Sailor starlights! Oh My god how i don’t like them and how toei animation made so that they outclassed the Senshi in powers. So Please to all pepole on Sailor moon fandom that loves the other Sailor Senshi then Sailor moon! Have fun and don’t make the Senshi copy of Sailor moon! But that they have instead their own uniqe design. That they have own weapons, more powers, that their Bodies has changed like to exempel Usagi can survive different gravity and Rei isn’t bother by tempartures under 80-celcius. And Please have more fantasy with the fanfics like Usagi can betray and be the mean to while the others can be the mature and powerfull goddesses! And if you don’t find inspiration! Look on the internet and read the planets mythology. Make crossovers! Make a crossover ship! Just use your fantasy because it has No limits and don’t listen to thoose who say you make the Character wrong Dammit! Because look at the thousands of drawings of Sailor moon who is a clumsy, adorable crybaby while in the drawings she is a angel, knight, goddes or something even more stronger! So Please think outside the damm box! That is then you are free and can do so much more!

who did it better
Tumblr media
It’s the age-old debate, granted I’m a little bit late to the party but my thoughts are not. It’s the Who Did It Better? Sailor Moon Edition! The epic battle of moon versus moon! Now keep in mind no matter what I say it is just an opinion, I don’t expect everyone to agree with it, this is Sailor Moon after all, not science. Disagree but be civil alright? Before I start this I was watching Sailor Moon Classic and reading the Sailor Moon manga roughly side by side. When I say I was reading the manga I mean not the manga that you know as manga but little comic book versions that were done chapter by chapter. I want you to also know that I was watching the Classic dubbed version and the errors in the dubbed version translated to the comics as well so at least it was consistent. When I watched the Classic subtitled version I was also reading a better and truer version of the manga (and it was actually a manga) alongside it. So why bother telling you this? I want you to know that my assessment of Sailor Moon Classic and Sailor Moon Crystal are not coming from a place of 90s nostalgia. That’s what a lot of people tend to argue in these debates, and because Crystal follows the manga for what it’s worth I can’t be accused of having that 90s nostalgia for Classic. So let’s break down the categories. Story Art Music Mythos Character likability Character development Ability/Power Growth Pacing I think I have hit most of the categories that tend to come up in a lot of these debates so let's go through them one by one. In terms of story, Sailor Moon Classic takes this category. The reason why Classic takes it over Crystal has everything to do with the fact that Crystal’s story is little more than a regurgitation of the manga and not a very good one. I’d almost rather read the manga for the extra bits that Crystal leaves out, it might not seem important but those little bits add up when telling the story of Sailor Moon. The first story arc of Crystal was already rough, but it turned into a dumpster fire when they tried to execute the Shitennou romance with the Inner Senshi. Classic told it’s own story and I think the execution overall is much better, Crystal felt like it was all over the place, especially in the first two seasons. The third season was better by miles, but it tripped out of the gate when it should have come sprinting out of the gate making it feel like a weak cash grab. No doubt it is, much like it’s shounen brother Dragon Ball Super. In terms of art Sailor Moon Classic also takes this category. Okay so it is not always consistent and it is not up to present-day standards, but that would be an unfair comparison. Sailor Moon Classic came out in the 90 and Sailor Moon Crystal came out in the 20-teens. They ought to be judged based on the standards for their own time right? If I judged Classic against the manga then yes the manga would win, but this is anime vs anime here and the quality for Crystal was just far below what it should have been, the inconsistency is way more jarring than in Classic, and the CGI transformations were cheap and they took me out of the moment. Even season to season they have a hard time staying consistent with the animation, granted season 3 was again an improvement over one and two, but my understanding is that there will be more changes with season 4 (the movie releases). For the music category, Sailor Moon Classic takes it yet again. The only thing I like about Sailor Moon Crystal as far as the music goes is some of the orchestrated stuff, I think that is better than Classic, but overall none of the songs are memorable, none of the transformation music is memorable, most people immediately think Moonlight Densetsu when they think of Sailor Moon and I can honestly say that there was maybe one song I personally enjoyed from Crystal and that was Eternal Eternity. The rest of the OP and ED songs were just forgettable honestly. In the mythos category, finally Sailor Moon Crystal takes it home for the win with the help of the manga because I did think the mythos in the manga was handled better than in Crystal, but Crystal tried. We actually understand our enemies, we know their history, we know their real motivation. Just looking at the first arc of each story as an example in Crystal we learn that Beryl wasn’t just some evil entity without a cause for the sake of being one like in Classic. We understand why she was so enamored by Endymion, where it wasn’t really clear before. She was a witch from Earth who was in love with Endymion and heart broken when he fell in love with Princess Serenity. We learn that the Shitennou were once loyal to the Prince Endymion, but their minds were poisoned against him. We get to see the darker side of Serenity’s anguish over losing Endymion. And one thing I liked was when they actually went to the moon in order to learn all of this history as opposed to being ejected into a different dimension by Kunzite which was just strange. I also like that we learn that all of the Senshi are princesses in their own right and get their powers from their respective castles and they have their own gowns which are awesome and I hope to one day see in Crystal. So congrats to Crystal and the manga by extension for the mythos.   For character likability, Sailor Moon Crystal also takes this category (Crystal might be catching up). For whatever reason so many characters in Classic had their personalities altered to either extreme levels or shitty levels. Mamoru was a total dick and I can see why so many people dislike him, the Classic version of Mamoru was a real jerk especially in season one where he would make fun of Usagi’s weight and he was just borderline verbally abusive...well maybe not borderline, he was. Mamoru in the manga and in Crystal would never talk to Usagi or anyone that way, he may have teased her, but he was never cruel to her and you could see that he loved her much more in Crystal than you can see it in Classic. Usagi, don’t get me wrong I love Usagi, but it’s almost like she reboots every season, just about. We see her grow in one season and she’s just as immature, childish, and insecure in the next season. She’s far more mature in Crystal, even though she is clumsy and a bit of a crybaby at times, though when she grows she grows. Rei is just a straight up bitch in Classic and Chibi-Usa never stops being annoying, the only seasons I liked Chibi-Usa in were the seasons when she wasn’t there. She’s so much better in Crystal and in the manga, she and Usagi have a stronger bond and they care more for each other, and Chibi-Usa does what she can to cheer Usagi up as well. They are not opposing forces as much as they are in Classic. Michiru and Haruka are also woefully changed from the Crystal and manga version. In Crystal they want to work with and to the same ends as Sailor Moon and the others, Haruka desperately loves her princess and you can see how heartbroken she is when she can’t save her or when she fails her (especially in the manga). In the Classic they treat Sailor Moon and the others like they are in the way like they have to earn their respect, they often have different agendas from the Inner Senshi, and they come off as double agents too. Character development. Sorry, I have to hand this to Sailor Moon Classic, this is what I was dreading with Sailor Moon Crystal and anyone who has read the manga and is being honest with themselves should agree that the characters in Crystal and the manga are very much underdeveloped. Their histories, their personalities, their quirks are watered down and when you think you’ve gotten to know one character half a dozen more characters pop up to push them to the back burner. The Inner Senshi are quickly pushed aside when the Outer Senshi show up and you have even more Senshi show up in later arcs that the only characters you really get to know are Usagi, Mamoru, and Chibi-Usa. The others barely get a moment to shine. Ability and power growth goes to Sailor Moon Crystal. I always felt like the other Senshi were constantly lagging behind Sailor Moon in abilities, power growth, and transformations in Classic whereas they grow when Sailor Moon grows in Crystal so we get to see more abilities, transformations, and powers. Even Mamoru gets to be badass in a way that he wasn’t in Classic with his roses, he gets Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber which is pretty badass looking in spite of the name. Pacing is a tie! The pacing is pretty shitty for both of the shows, we can all agree on this much I think. Sailor Moon Classic was running alongside the manga so it kind of had an excuse, it had to have fillers so the manga could catch up. Still, it was stuffed with fillers, some of them I liked and they were fun, some of them were unnecessary and added nothing. Sailor Moon Crystal blows by really quickly, so fast you feel like you don’t get to know the characters very well, you don’t get a flushed out story, in fact, pacing contributes to the reason why Crystal fails in other categories and it kind of has the manga to thank for it. The Overall Winner is! Sailor Moon Classic!

Here’s the moment Usagi first introduces herself as Sailor Moon. In Crystal, this moment works on so many levels, and here’s why.
First, on the story level. When Usagi goes to Osa-P to save Naru, Jadeite’s first monster asks, “Who are you?” But Usagi doesn’t even know what her superhero identity is called! Luna meows, looking up at the moon, and guess who Usagi thinks of? That sailor-suited ally of justice, Sailor V! Usagi’s only heard of Sailor V from Umino today, but once she does she sees Sailor V everywhere. Sailor V’s even a video game at Usagi’s favourite Crown Arcade! So she plays the Sailor V arcade game, and beats an enemy with some help from Motoki. Usagi is seriously connecting with this Sailor V person, whom she now idolises and thinks doesn’t have to study at all (if only she knew). When she gets home, she imitates Sailor V by aiming a kick at her little brother Shingo, and even dreams of being Sailor V. After she transforms for the first time, her first comment is, “I look like Sailor V!” And so, when she thinks of a name for her superhero identity, Usagi bases her decision on this ally of justice she has only just heard of today: she calls herself “Sailor Moon”!
Next, also on the story level, but for people who already know the later part of the story. We know that in her past life, Usagi was never Sailor Moon, only Princess Serenity. In fact, I’m of the belief that Sailor Moon exists on Earth mainly because of the plan to use Minako as the decoy princess. Which means that in the story at this point, the name “Sailor Moon” does not exist in the world, and that this is the very moment that the “Sailor Moon” identity is born. It also has so much foreshadowing power for those of us who are so familiar with Usagi’s story over the five arcs. Sailor Moon begins as a weak crybaby who needs to be protected and saved, and ends as the all-encompassing, ever-loving goddess who saves the entire universe. This is the moment where it all begins.
Finally, on the level of Sailor Moon Crystal. Sailor Moon is back, and Kotono Mitsuishi is back as Usagi Tsukino, reprising her role from the 90s anime. While on the story level this is all new to Usagi, for those of us who grew up with the series and the 90s anime, this is familiar. Sailor Moon is back! On this level, Usagi’s smile is a knowing one. It’s saying, “Are you ready to go on this ride again?”, before Usagi breaks out into her signature phrase:
“愛と正義のセーラー服美少女戦士セーラームーン!月に代わっておしおきよ!”
“For love and justice, I am the sailor-suited pretty guardian Sailor Moon! In the name of the Moon, I’ll punish you!”

As much as I love strong female characters, I feel like a lot of them are just... impossible to connect to. At least for a complete wimp like me.
How often are they scared? Never. Do they ever back down? Never.
Please hear me out.
I'm an emotional and sensitive girl. I constantly think I'm weak and useless. I think that, because society tells me I am. I have never felt strong, because society NEVER portrays girls like me as someone strong. Girls like me who are timid, emotional, and sensitive are rarely ever action girls, and are often the butt of jokes!
There's something just not right about that.
This is why Usagi Tsukino means so much to me.
Usagi is timid like me, she's a crybaby, but she also manages to save the world. She has a huge heart and thinks of others, which is what makes her strong. She's proof that girls like me can triumph, and CAN be a hero. She inspires me more than anything.
It drives me up the wall when anyone says Usagi is weak and not strong. Because I'm my opinion, Usagi is the strongest bravest soldier ever. She's emotional and sensitive, AND also kicks ass like a badass. She fights for justice and stands up for what's right. And most importantly, she has a powerful heart. She tries her hardest and perseveres. Her character development is amazing. She's the only big feminist icon I can think of with a personality like mine.
She inspires me and gives me hope that maybe I can be a hero too.

ENGLISH:
Sick, sick rabi-get you! Sick, sick rabi-get you! Sick, sick rabi-get you! Sick, sick rabi-get you!
Ah, today too as usual, I'm sleepy and fed up like this Am I even alive? The replies I send you are just my selfish desire for control (I'm just being honest)
Sick, sick rabi-get you! Sick, sick rabi-get you! Sick, sick rabi-get you! Sick, sick rabi-get you!
I'm wondering, who are you with? I'm anxious, where are you at? I'm worried, what are you doing? I'm a sick rabbit
Hop hop; a sick rabbit jumping around The truth is, I'm quite lonely Hey, you better give me some attention or my weakness will end up killing me Hop hop; a sick rabbit jumping around I'm much more cowardly than everyone else Ah, why is it so hard like this?
Who am I with? Wonder about it Where am I at? Be anxious about it What am I doing? Worry about it I'm a hopeless rabbit
Hop hop; a hopeless rabbit jumping around The truth is, I'm quite lonely Hey, you better give me some attention or my weakness will end up killing me Hop hop; a hopeless rabbit jumping around I'm much more cowardly than everyone else Ah, why is it so hard like this?
Hey, why aren't you only looking at me? Hey, why can't I be the only one for you? Hey, why are you looking at someone else? Hey, why? Hey, why? Answer me, answer me, ANSWER ME
I don't need to feign innocence at this point I'm just a twisted sick monster Come here Come here Come here Stop it- I'm all confuseeeeed
Either way, I guess this love is just impossible after all A blind flag is a step straight into hell
You're only for me I'm only for you I can't stand it; steal it all away from my impure self A crybaby, sick rabbit This feeling that I can't reach Hey, notice me more
Hop hop; a sick rabbit jumping around I want to feel your sweat Ah, just now, I felt our eyes meet
Sick, sick rabi-get you! Sick, sick rabi-get you! Sick, sick rabi-get you! Sick, sick rabi-get you!
TL NOTE * 1 - 'Sick' here does not mean physical illness- it's more of a mental health term. 'yami' has in more recent years with the menhera boom amongst younger people become a term for someone who's, the best way to put it while maintaining the word sick, is 'sick in the head' (not to be confused with yamikawaii fashion- that incorporates that theme, but doesn't necessarily mean the wearer is ill.) in this song in specific the girl seems obsessive, yandere-esque. * 2 - I chose "rabi-get you!" rather than "rabbi get you!" because I think it fits the sort of cut-off that "usa gecchuu" has. * 3 - 変幻自在 isn't easy to translate naturally without it just sounding very robotic. I went with 'twisted' since that's pretty common for people to say in English, "twisted sick monster" or "sick twisted monster." * 4 - I don't really know what a blind flag is, both in Japanese and in English. I have to wonder if it's been used as some sort of metaphor for "a blind future" or "an unknown future"? * 5 - I translated "ki ni naru" and "ki ni shite" in different ways for each time it was said to add some variation rather than just leaving it one way for each line
