* Tsuji is quieter, calmer and smarter than Shiba.

* Also stronger.

* But still, I'd say he's also a bit crazy, although he usually chooses to listen everything first

* He is a very cool character with his hair style that he changes frequently and his unique style

* He has a cool vibe, he seems like a bit of a shy person for being cool

* Crazier than Shiba in fights. Doesn't get angry quickly but can be pretty tough

* He's also quite loyal. We all know that Shibaman and him were with Todoroki from the very beginning and they never left him alone.

* No matter how tough and wild he may seem, I think he is very kind hearted, soft and funny to those he loves.

* For him, I think someone between would be great, rather than someone too serious or too loud.

* Someone who is calm but knows how to have fun, is not afraid to say what she thinks, helpful and cheerful.

* I think Tsuji is quite introverted and not showing his feelings. So he'll be grateful for someone who understands him without he tells

* He's pretty big and tall, so it doesn't matter to him whether you're tall or short, fat or slim.

* I don't think he is afraid to take the first step. But I think when he likes someone, he'll hide it for a while and want to be sure.

* Not someone to judge you when you cry. When he sees your eyes watering, he will hug you in his arms and quietly stroke your hair until you relax.

Writing a critique of mask as if it was something I was critiquing for grad school lol. Some plot spoilers under the cut

Strengths

Always start with the positives. What did I like? I think the setting and music were immersive. Since I've been playing skies lately I was so excited any time something from it was mentioned. In games I love to make auditory connections, and I was excited that the audio for the sunlight in the parliament ending matches the intro of The Forge Timespace track on the skies OST! And on the topic of audio, of course the curator cries from skies. Hello Veils

There were a few parts, especially in a certain ending, where the writing really shone through. There are genuinely funny and compelling moments which has always been a strength of the devs, that dark comedy tone. My most recent playthrough, I basically just hooked up with monsters and that was the most fun I've had in the game.

Weaknesses

We've already discussed pacing to hell and back so I'm gonna skip that. Besides pacing, the biggest flaw in MOTR is that the game has identity issues. It doesn't know what it is or what it's trying to be. Mask fails as a dating sim, as a mystery game, and as a visual novel because it's trying to be everything at once and thus failing to be anything. If I played it like a dating sim, well. Pressing flirt repeatedly and seeing some of the same scenes play out every time you seduce a character with little new text doesn't immerse the player. If I played it like a mystery game, the pacing is prohibitive when it comes to solving it. I haven't actually played other visual novels so don't have a reference for that but I don't think they are as rushed as this

Either you can go into a little bit of detail about a lot of things, you can go into a lot of detail about a few things, or you widen the parameters so you can go into more detail about more things. Within the framework mask exists in (and I don't thing slowing the pacing will fix this beyond making it easier to finish some quests), the scope is too small to do justice to the scale of content they're trying to convey. I'd tell the author they had too much going on at once and to narrow their focus. Decide which characters should be focused on and which aren't so necessary. Some of them definitely were included in a way that felt last minute just to get a reaction from fans, and not because they had something to offer the narrative. Those characters either needed a plot with more depth or weren't necessary.

Mechanics

Mechanically speaking, I... didn't see a point to most of the new features. I was never in a situation where I needed certain clothes to progress, which made collecting them kinda pointless. You can complete any number of different playthroughs without touching story crafting at all. I got the feeling from marketing that story crafting would be used to help matchmake with other characters, but it very much does not do that unless I'm completely missing a big chunk of the game, which is possible given how nigh impossible it is to progress.

The engine is innovative and stunning from the perspective of someone with experience in code. But then you can't DO anything in it. Sure it may be super responsive to different paths, but if the variables change, the dialogue/written consequences don't.

Diversity and Inclusion

Finally, these notes. It's seldom comfortable to bring it up but it's important. I almost called this nitpicking compared to everything else but no, it's not! These issues are just as important and deserve to take up space. I see fellow players sort of expressing "yeah I didn't expect them to improve these areas" but that still doesn't minimize the issue.

I'm just puzzled. They took effort to research writing Jewish and Sikh NPCs but then go and keep assuming the player is Anglican. (In an ending after failing in the trial, I got a random bit mentioning how they used to hang Catholic dissenters and I was like... was that really necessary.) Idk like, especially with all the research they did you figure something would have changed, that someone somewhere would have pointed it out

The line saying the player spoke the Queen's English REALLY bugged me. First of all I have a working class accent, and I'm American not British, but accent is still a touchy topic and was even more significant in the 1860s than it is now. Same point as above, there are a lot of characters that do not have high British accents. Phoebe, Archie, Ferret, Ivy. Why assume with the player? The thing is they already have a mechanic in place with the backstories! Sure, a society player would speak Queens English but a dockworker would not! Go by that!

And body diversity. Can we please get more characters that aren't the same thin body type. It being the Age of Malnutrition isn't an excuse. (To get specific. You Know Who was from Mesopotamia where the culture had beards. The one option in late railway uses the silhouette from the cheery man which has a beard so I had misplaced hope but alas)

Summary

While the game posed tidbits of interesting horror lore, the classic dark comedy tone, and spicy monsters (before the encounters became repetitive, that is), Mask fell flat in so many ways. I had an ending after seducing Milton where he remarked that the player rarely talks about themself and I laughed because yeah, that's how the game was designed. The player has no opportunity to gain a personality through flashbacks or dialogue choices. The NPCs are stiff and very rarely have unique reactions to your character. Conversation changes topic with no clear thread or motivation.

I'm honestly flummoxed how this got through development with these glaring problems. Everyone in the playerbase noticed them right away. Ugh. Little is more frustrating than things that had so much potential that isn't realized.

It felt like a long ES, with all the pros and cons of an ES lol. Certain paths blow your mind and you might walk into hot moments with ur favs. But then no time to realize why you should care about characters, story that abruptly ends, new mechanic that is shiny and interesting but can only carry it so far, yada yada yada

— When she started using eyeliner everyone thought that Karai had taught her, but she actually taught herself. She has an excellent pulse so the eyeliner always looks divine on her ✨️.

— April taught her to paint nails.

— She is curious about wearing a corset. If she could be human for a day she would try one on.

— She loves to wear sweaters and baggy clothes, it's the only human clothes that fit her, but she dreams of being able to wear tighter clothes.

— When she was a child she liked Lilo & Stitch a lot, her brothers also liked it but she more. She admired Nani very much.

— Her favorite Disney princess is Tiana.

Hello! I have kinda a longwinded question about fantasy dwarves, ive read your posts about the topic and id like to know if what im considering is distancing the idea of 'dwarves' from the real history of little people. I have a homebrew d&d world where ive created a fair bit of worldbuilding for a number of fantasy races, dwarves included. Everything you were saying about fantasy dwarves makes total sense, and I dont want to perpetuate that, so I'd like to change my homebrew setting to be more respectful of LP and their history. Is changing the name and physical characteristics (i.e. Not having the species called dwarves, not having them be small humanoid mining people, etc) and including fleshed out characters with dwarfism in other races enough to distance this from real little people?

To make up for a potentially heavy question: all the outfits you post are Excellent, what are your favorite clothes to find and alter? Or, is there any piece in your wardrobe you really love/ are proud of? I dont alter too much of my clothing but i always treasure finding a pair of pants i can reasonably take in and make work for me! Hello! Thank you for these questions ^-^ I've noticed that a lot of dnd players and world builders are working to create more accepting settings for their players, which is a great endeavor for the world of fantasy.

Q: Is changing the name and physical characteristics (i.e. not having the species called dwarves, not having them be small humanoid mining people, etc) and including fleshed out characters with dwarfism in other races enough to distance this from real little people?

Solid question - I think that the only real way to distance real little people from fantasy "dwarves" is to drop the made up race all together, which you would already essentially be doing once you stray from the necessary characteristics that draw the parallel. Basing a made up race of beings off of a marginalized community shouldn't be happening - full stop. And it shouldn't be missed. Yes, freely include little people in the fantasy genre, but don't use their bodies to mystify them. Don't turn them into a class other than human.

And removing "dwarves" as a race classification is really just a drop in the bucket. Include real little people in ALL genres outside of fantasy. Create positive representation. Use media as a means of destigmatizing and romanticizing bodies like mine, and step outside of the written word; Fight for equality for real life little people, and by extension the entire disabled community. Take stands against inaccessibility, workplace and medical discrimination, healthcare inequality. Educate yourself on spoon theory, take up sign language, question the nature of the world we've built in the same way you do regarding gender, sexuality, race and mental illness.

Q: All the outfits you post are Excellent, what are your favourite clothes to find and alter? Or, is there any piece in your wardrobe you really love/are proud of?

Thank you so much ^-^ well I'm a really big fan of earth tones and mixed patterns - lots of browns, greens, blacks, and mustards. I love finding things that I don't have to alter, but when I must I like to adjust sleeves - skirts and dresses are a bit more work. Currently my favorite garment is the skirt seen in the top left photo (description: knee length polyester skirt that sits at high waist, black with diagonal matte gold stripes) which I love to pair with both green pallets and red and yellow pallets. Mostly I love to have a lot of witchy fun with my clothes :)

im a recent follower and started reading ilal around last month i think? i guess i got here when you had just released chapter 8. im such a big fan of this fic, you have no idea! its probably one of my favorites in all ateez tumblr rn. i wasnt a fan of fanfics that have chapters (ive read one-shots for the longest time) but this preference has started to change recently and ilal has a major role in it. the story and universe is amazing, im truly amazed!

i'm so glad you enjoy ilal! it's been an absolute pleasure to write, and i enjoy nothing more than getting to share it with all of you! and wow, i'm so glad you gave ilal a chance! that really means a lot! i've always been more of a chapter person myself, but i completely understand why one-shots can be preferable because then you don't have to wait weeks/months to get more. i've wanted/thought about writing more one-shots myself, but sadly, i'm not very good with it. an idea gets into my head and then i write way too many words. which is also a problem because i usually struggle with finishing things. my drive is literally full of unfinished works. oops. but don't worry, i have never been more motivated to finish a fic before ilal. like, this one is going to be the one that i finally finish.

i'm so glad you love y/n's characteristics. i'm honestly really bad about using my own personalities and characteristics in characters i write because it's easier. and i think ilal y/n is probably the closest person i've written to myself. i didn't really mean for it to be that way, but oops. i'm glad though that you and others can relate to y/n though, and to know you're not the only one who struggles in areas like those. (like literally, i've been with my partner for almost three years now and i still struggle with being vulnerable around them.)

you are literally so right about proseka like. i tried it for a few weeks and i just couldnt get into it in any sense of the word. like d4dj i still dont know shit about the story or the lore but i really enjoy the actual rhythm game part of it at least but proseka just made me so frustrated. also this is just me but i hated the proseka character sprites 😭😭😭 they just felt weird to me i couldnt stand to look at them for very long

NO NO ANON YOU'RE LITERALLY RIGHT ABOUT THE SPRITES.... like i'm sorry but sometimes i compare the live 2d of idol games that have it (enstars, d4dj, project sekai, bandori) and like... prsk just. feels so stiff to me for some reason? the enstars ones sometimes weird me out but they're usually fine but the prsk ones... they just don't look natural to me a LOT of the time and i have no clue why, the movement on them iffs me quite a little and there's something very specific about the hands on them when compared to others like d4dj, they just feel so bone-y... i also think it's boring that they don't do live 2ds for the cards but eh

Also fully agree abt the rhythm game part like... Yeah there are some charts that feel fun to me but they are. So few when compared to any other. I feel like the gameplay is wonky on my device most of the time and whenever i swipe or release a hold note there's delay no matter how much i adjust the settings which always causes me to lose combos and frustrates me to NO end. i also think there's a VERY big lack of customization for the settings but for this one im fully willing to admit that d4dj spoiled me with rhythm game settings

I enjoy the prsk characters and cards and the covers sound good most of the time, but the gameplay ticks me off soooo much alongside some of the fans... idk why the hell they are so salty about d4dj on twitter and it bothers me to no end. i am fully certain on the fact it's only that popular and taken as the "pinnacle of idol rhythm games" (it is not.) because of miku, not even all vocaloids... i feel like i could point a better rhythm game for everything people point out as a good feature of project sekai (except the outfit customization for characters since all the ones i know that have 3d models don't let you change clothes from character A to character B, but everything else? yeah)

SPLATOON DLC!!!!! aarrggrurahrgh it makes me so excited that they're coming in wAVES!!!! i feel like there might be two more waves bc of the 4 in colours behind the words expansion pack and the 4 tapes under the wave 1 screen but idk that might just be me grasping at straws shkdjfgh wave 1!!! hOUHRUHGRHG INKOPOLIS PLAZAAA ;;;;;;;; i think it was really funny that the whole fandom lost their shit at the dlcs being announced n then after getting over the adrenaline collectively decided that wave 1 doesn't actually do shit shkjdfhg but honestly i like it! splatsville feels a bit big for me plus i never got to play splat1 that much so it's nice getting to see where it all started. also sQUID SISTERS PERFORMING AGAIN ;;;;; i Love that their city of colours instrumental didn't change but their singing clearly did, and they look older noww!! ;; and also their clothes do the glowy glow now too!!!! so happy for them -w- also ss is my fav idol group of the three (but the other two aren't far behind so it's not rlly significant jskjhdfg) so obv i'm excited to see them again ;;;; i hope that w bringing back the plaza they also bring back AT LEAST the arcade minigames and everything, bc it looks like the arcade machine is still present in the plaza (but i might be tripping so don't take my word for it :p

NEXT MY CHILDHOOD BEST FRIEND KIRBY'S RTD DELUXE!!!!!!! AWOHHWHGOAWHGA i love kirby rtd ;;;;; it's my very first kirby game!! and one that i'd play over and over and over and over again. i'm so happy that it's getting remade for the switch ;;; absolutely looove the outline thing they did w the characters! i love that they kept the colours nice and bright and fun just like i remember! i'mm not sure yet how i feel about retconning king dedede's design hkdjfhg since rtd was my first game his design there is the one i'm used to n not his earlier design in kirby 64 crystal shards :p but yeah! i really like the merry magoland!! i played it a bit in the demo and it's a fun lil mario party minigame mountain feeling thing -w- aND THE MASK THING IS SO COOL??? Hello there! Oh, multiple questions this time, hm? Well let's see here...

1. I'm afraid I haven't heard of that before. :o Doing a quick search, it appears to be people doing improvised lines over the cutscenes... Hm, in all honesty, I'm not sure if this would appeal to my sense of humor, but I did only look at a small moment of one, so I very well could be wrong. As of right now, I'd say I don't plan to watch them, but I may change my mind at some point in the future.

I am a fan of the Sonic series itself, though! I'd say my favorites are Team Dark- I doubt it's a surprise I'm drawn towards a group with a thief character, haha. It's also kind of astounding to me the sheer amount of similarities Shadow has to Hiei- even down to having a sweet sister in blue. I admit, I do have an extra strong fondness for this character solely because of how much he's like Hiei. :)

2. Haha, I suppose getting the "zoomies" would be an accurate statement. I've always really loved running through nature, and there's something particularly appealing about it when I'm in my fox form. Perhaps it's because of how much bigger the world looks and feels, with the trees towering over me even more than usual. Plus, I love the way the wind flows through my hair, so experiencing that all over my body is quite nice.

Sometimes if I'm feeling a little restless, I'll shift into my fox form just to take a run. I also often get the desire to do so when its snowing, since I spent a lot of my early life in cold climates- especially once I gained my plant manipulation abilities, as I enjoyed training my powers in such environments. Many plants are less inclined to grow and be manipulated with youki in the cold, so I found the added difficulty to be quite fun. So I suppose winter makes me feel quite nostalgic for that time, heh.

3. Oh dear, funniest memory in all of my few thousand years? I think that'd be hard to pin down, and I'm sure there's a good few I can't recall at the moment... So, I'll go for a recent story.

There's been a few times where I've convinced Hiei to play strip poker with me. I'm quite skilled at card games, so I already usually excel against him, but there was one game in particular where I was still fully clothed while he was almost completely naked across from me. Finally he had won one round, and smirked at me as he said "shirt. off." With me being who I am though, I kept full eye contact with him as I slowly slipped off a shoe and tossed it aside, haha. I was almost afraid he was going to burn the cards again, but thankfully he didn't.

That, however, wasn't the moment that made me bust into a fit of laughter. I only explained that as it was surely the catalyst for what happened the next time I had asked him to play strip poker with me. Hiei agreed to play, but in a moment, so I shuffled the cards in the meantime. He was taking longer than I expected, but I could still feel his energy in the house, so I didn't worry about it and just waited for him to return. And when he did, he... well, he looked kinda like this:

Except it looked even more ridiculous, what with it being Hiei, and many of my clothes being much too big for him. I actually laughed so hard it started to hurt. 😂 I went with it for the game since it was too hilarious. And I did get a significant amount of the clothes off of him as we played, but I most certainly didn't win that time, haha.

Some notes about my OC Arte

My OC Arthur, who is featured in like three pieces, is going through some changes. While I used the name Arthur in reference to the medieval tales, it was long before I knew Sonic was sometimes written as King Arthur in fanfics. I've considered changing my OC's name for a while despite really liking the name

So I've decided that although Arthur is his official name, he will go by the nickname Arte, pronounced "art," like magic artes. This is also a bit of a reference to the Tales series, specifically Tales of Arise, which I watched SO play and really enjoyed

(Arte's love interest will still refer to him as Kingsley, his last name. This is just a plot device where in times of importance, she will refer to him as something else. A bit like in Nier Automata 🤫)

Another big change is that his hair will no longer be black, as for some strange reason when he has black hair, he reminds me of someone I don't prefer no matter how much I try to think otherwise 🙃 The resemblance always really bothered me since Arte is supposed to be based on SO, who also has black hair, but I just can't make it work. I've always really liked platinum blonde hair anyway...

His color scheme will stay red and black as those are SO's favorite colors. He's still a cat, SO's favorite animal. And I'm giving Arte ice powers because--you guessed it--ice is SO's favorite element

I thought that it would be tricky to make red and ice work; I even considered changing his fur color to cool tones. But after looking at Blaze, whose fur is not fiery red/orange (but rather purple to complement the yellow glow of fire), I realized I could make it work through a primary color scheme: red (fur), blue (ice), and yellow (hair). It's just another good reason to make him blonde

Arte will be getting an upgraded outfit. I've always liked designing clothes so that process has been really fun ^^ Plus this look tho 👀

Fun facts:

Arte owning a hotel business is inspired by SO's childhood

Arte's weapon, the rapier, is based off the Red Mage in FFXIV, a character SO enjoys playing

SO does not dress fancy; Arte dressing up is purely self-indulgent lmao

Arte not like the nickname Artie. Only use it to piss him off 💀

While Arte grew up spoiled (only child, born into wealth), a materialistic ex unintentionally showed him the error of his ways. He still enjoys the finer things in life, though he's more grateful about it

I've considered the idea of him receiving combat training from Blaze, though I haven't really fleshed that out yet

(When it comes to like, the historical context of things--a weapon from this century, a coat from that location--I haven't done any research to confirm if it all matches. But history is not my favorite subject so I don't particularly care in all honesty lol. Plus it's fiction. We're just gonna make it up as we go 😇)

This character has been in the works for a while so it's exciting to finally make some headway on him 🥲

I know it's pretty annoying to bring up my husband so much but he really has been a huge source of inspiration to me, always supporting me and being my biggest fan 💖

Welcome to the third part of my Mario retrospective. Here are the first and second parts if you want to read. Or don't! I'm not your boss. Since this movie is somewhat recent, I'm gonna put part of this under a spoiler. There's not really much to spoil; I just wanna be on the safe side.

Super Mario Bros. (2023)

The final movie, for now. Despite the critiques I’m going to give later on, I enjoy it quite a bit! It’s a very fun movie and is what it set out to be even if there’s a few places where it stumbles.

A lot changed about the Mario franchise in just one decade after the live action movie’s release: characters’ clothes, names, the complete disappearance of anything related to Brooklyn, New York, and so on. Imagine what can change in three decades! 

…Not too much more that’s relevant here. The series aims to be a static one, and this was very much the case during the 2010s. It’s only recently maybe kind of sort of getting away from that? Just a little bit. But this cementing of the Mario series identity is a big change in itself, and with Nintendo looking over Illumination’s shoulder, they couldn’t exactly get away with putting the Mushroom Kingdom’s inhabitants in leather and chains.

Nintendo choosing Illumination to take on this project makes sense the more I think about it. Not only are their movies generally well-received, they have experience doing adaptations like The Grinch (2018), and of course, The Lorax (2012). 

Let’s consider the Mario Movie Dilemma: How does Super Mario Bros. (2023) balance being a movie and being Mario? With Illumination’s talent and Nintendo’s strict oversight, it maintains this balance the best out of all three movies. Sure, there’s some wonky casting choices, some licensed music that doesn’t quite fit, and a feeling that the movie is about to burst from the seams with references, but it keeps its balance much like a unicyclist juggling on a tightrope.

The decision to keep in line with the last two movies and follow Mario and Luigi’s first foray into the Mushroom Kingdom is a strange one. As mentioned before, Nintendo had since made it so that they were born there, and hadn’t mentioned Brooklyn since. When this plot was announced, many fans were confused, assuming Mario always lived in the Mushroom Kingdom. I don’t think this movie had to be an origin story, there’s other plots that could’ve been made to fit the Mario Formula™, but it does make it easier to establish the characters.

Speaking of the characters, another big change that separates this movie from the other two is that the game characters have established personalities now. Mario is a happy-go-lucky guy with a lot of determination, Luigi is timid and easily frightened, Bowser is a brute that’s evil for the fun of it, Peach is sweet and dainty, Donkey Kong is an easygoing meathead, and Toad sounds screechy. 

These are simple characterizations, but they’ve had a good 20 years to marinate. They alone struggle to carry the kind of mainstream movie this one wants to be, so let’s see how they’re built on.

Mario - He’s an average guy, not as gung-ho as his game counterpart but not world-weary like the live action movie version. His family doubts his dreams, giving him underdog woes, yet further bolstering his determination. The beginning of the movie demonstrates that he’s already skilled with jumps and stuff before the adventure but inexperienced enough that there are still challenges for him to face during it. He is an acceptable protagonist …and yet, it feels like there’s something missing. Many have said that canon Mario doesn’t have a personality, and I’m not going to argue that he’s complex or anything, but he’s an endearing little guy. This Mario is just a guy. Despite having the most going on out of any depiction of Mario I’ve seen, this one feels the blandest to me. It’s not his design, it’s not even entirely his voice (though his voice actor’s lack of energy was an issue). He’s not very animated, I think. There’s never any moments where Mario stands out to me. His expressions in the OVA were really charming. In the games, he’s not always the most animated in expressions, but his voice is. Aside from the things that are required of this Mario as a protagonist, there’s little to endear me to him other than his and Luigi’s relationship. And that leads into a whole other issue. As for whether he sets the tone of this movie... I can't say for certain. The movie is dead set on making the world of the games look fun, and Mario is having fun, but he seems kind of muted compared to the rest of the cast. If anything, I'd say everyone but Mario sets the tone here.

Luigi - Along with being easily scared like his canon counterpart, this Luigi really cares for Mario and thinks the world of him, which is also true to canon, but it really has a chance to show here. It also leads into some of the funniest lines in the movie. He’s also portrayed here as kind of helpless. It’s established that Mario is his protector, and wherever he goes, Luigi goes. Charlie Day’s performance is really spirited; I hope he was compensated for all twenty of his lines. That’s exaggerating, but yeah. He gets captured instead of Peach, which I understand why, though it did make me sad to know that he wouldn’t be a part of the adventure, especially after seeing how his and Mario’s relationship is depicted here. It would’ve been interesting to see an escape plan regardless of who got kidnapped, and Luigi taking steps to escape on his own would help tie together the character growth he has at the end a little better. But the movie doesn’t go that route. He sits there, barely getting lines.

Bowser - Perfect. No notes. Whenever they give Bowser lines in the games, he’s an evil jock who's larger than life. He’s basically the same character here, even down to the voice, which I was shocked to hear Jack Black pull off. The only difference in his characterization is the running gimmick of how insecure he is about wanting Peach to like him, which is fun.

Donkey Kong - In this movie, he’s a showoff-y jock who really loves his dad. It’s weirdly endearing at times. He’s also Mario’s rival and bickers with him a lot. I have mixed feelings, because while I do like how he and the rest of the Kongs were handled in this movie, removing them might’ve freed up some time for the main cast to get to do more.

Toad - He’s there. The trailers propped him up as if he was going to be the comic relief sidekick, but once the adventure starts, he’s barely in the movie. I got jumpscared a few times by him because I forgot he existed. You could remove him from the heroes’ group, and it would barely change anything.

Lumalee - Lumalee is not an important character, but I wanted to single them out because their whole gimmick is “cute creature says depressing things,” which probably overstays its welcome even for those who got a laugh out of it. Personally, I found it grating, but even more grating is that most scenes that could be focused on Luigi or any of the other more interesting prisoners focuses on this character instead.

Side Cast in General -  Very good! For what some of the main characters lacked, the incidental characters really made things fun. The only one I have critique about is Foreman Spike, whose role in the movie (aside from being an obscure reference) is better filled by Mario and Luigi’s family.

You may notice that I skipped Peach. This is because from a creative perspective, she’s such an interesting challenge that she deserves her own mini-essay. She’s worth it. 

Having a female character whose sole purpose is to be a damsel in distress has been seen as cliche for many decades, but you could get away with it to some extent in years past. Fans of the games are fairly resigned to it, but it would not be wise to go that route when trying to appeal to a broader movie-going audience in 2023. 

On top of that, Princess Peach has the least consistent characterization of the main Mario characters. In most mainline games, she’s kidnapped, so we really only get to see that she’s sweet and dainty. Those aspects are still there in spinoffs, but the ones added onto her vary a lot. In Paper Mario games, she’s portrayed as strong-willed, in the Mario & Luigi RPGs, she’s proactive and clever, in some of the party/sports games, she doesn’t seem to know what’s going on all the time (“Did I win?”), and in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, she’s so oblivious that it loops back around into her seeming too cool to care. ‘The airship we’re on is exploding? That won’t stop me from having a nice tea party with my new friends Samus Aran and Solid Snake.’ So while Peach has a few established personality traits, there’s many different directions she could be taken in.

This movie decided to make her a proactive, actiony type, willing to defend her kingdom with her own two hands if it comes down to it. On paper, this sounds close to how she’s depicted in the Super Mario Adventures comics, which is my favorite version of her. Before rewatching the movie, I was going to say that the movie version of her felt like a watered down version of that in practice. I still think so, but not because there’s anything wrong with how she’s written. She just doesn’t get a lot of chances to shine. Every character kind of has that problem. There. That saved nine paragraphs of me rambling.

Despite my complaints about how some characters were (not) used, it doesn’t impact the movie too badly. The movie’s more plot-focused than character focused. There’s a lot of care put into staying faithful to the games in both looks and vibes, which I appreciate, while also being a fun movie in its own right. 

The plot itself is not super complicated: Mario and Luigi stumble into the Mushroom Kingdom’s world and get separated, and Mario wants to rescue him. In the meantime, Bowser is trying to take over the world and marry Peach. Very fitting for a Mario plot.

What the plot may lack in complexity, it makes up for in… stuff. Stuff is happening all the time. They really wanted to fit in as many things as they could from the games, and while it helps give characters things to do during their journey, it borders on feeling cramped.

Take Bowser’s beautiful power ballad, for example. I thought we were going to get a full musical number, only for it to be cut off right when I was really feeling it. The movie’s like “Chop, chop, we gotta move to the next scene.” It feels like it’s always running out of time, and it gets stressful at some points. I remember being on pins and needles during my first watch, wondering if it would give Luigi something meaningful to do in the last five minutes.

Watching this movie is like going on a tour in a beautiful city, but your tour guide is going at a breakneck pace. You still have a good time, but you don’t get to take things in as much as you want to. The movie has little room to breathe; I feel like this might be part of the reason some characters, Peach and Luigi especially, were mishandled. With so much going on, there’s no time to focus on them. I’m still looking forward to the next movie, though! Hopefully, they’ll slow down?

Let’s end things off with my personal ranking of each movie, from favorite to least.

Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! (1986): Due to being released so early in the series’ lifetime, it’s a little odd to some, but it’s cozy and full of charm like any good Mario game. It succeeds at what it’s trying to do.

Super Mario Bros. (2023): It’s incredibly faithful to the current state of the series while being a fun movie in its own right, but key characters lack charm, and the experience can feel a little rushed.

Super Mario Bros. (1993): It threw away any resemblance to Mario in order to be its own movie and somehow failed at both. Pour one out for the visual artists.

I've been debating whether or not I should start a journal of these adventures and came to the quick realization that because I was in doubt, I should do this. There would be nothing lost by documenting my adventures and deciding I don't want to continue this later, but I would only feel regret by not doing this, and later wishing I had. So here we are!

I've been a fan of pokemon since it first came out. I have fond memories of playing red and blue for hours on my gameboy, collecting the cards (of course while I got nothing of note, my brother got Charizard in his first booster pack, something he has never let me forget even decades later), and just being entirely swept away by the craze with no turning back.

I will probably end up sharing bits and pieces from my memories in the various posts here, and not make just one giant memory post because I have 25 years of memories to share and don't need to start this journal off with an entire novel.

This will, however, be a documentation of my adventures through the games from here forward.

I am currently going through Shield with my pokemon partner, Fen. Here's us just today:

We always adventure side by side, and I acknowledge I am entirely the luckiest creature in the world to have someone like that in my life. Yes, the games are fun enough to solo through, but I found my joy multiplied ten times when we started going through these worlds together. Someone to battle with, someone to trade with, someone to complain to when a big mean growlithe knocks out your poor adorable defenseless azurill. Expect to hear mention of Fen a lot, because my time in these games are shared with him.

So yes! I have started my shield playthrough. I did play through the base game of sword before, but not the expansions, and I plan to get through both of those this time.

I had a team pre-prepared for this playthrough: an aron named Melor, an azurill named Leo, a cottonee named Mika, a sizzlepede named Ignis, a toxel named Riff, and an alcreamie named Neyli. I will enjoy my adventure with these guys from beginning to end while I work my way through everything and also try to complete the pokedex for the shiny charm (something I've done in Sword already, but I also wish to accomplish in Shield).

I must confess I've spent far too much time in the clothing shops already, but I'm always a huge fan of character customization. I'll be changing my clothes probably every time I post here.

I've currently just finished the first gym. I rushed forward to get the badge quickly because I am always worrying about over leveling my team and then losing their loyalty. I will probably continue to evade all of the trainers I can for now, and try to get a few more badges before slowing down the pace and taking my time to fill up my dex more and fight other trainers.

I don't entirely know how often I'll post, but I look forward so much to seeing these pages filled up with memories that I can look back on someday.

I watched the trailer for the new Fire Emblem! Still don't have a switch though, so I won't be playing it any time soon :x

I won't lie, I'm not sold on the summoning aspect. On one hand, it could be seen as a way for the fans to have their favourite past heroes in a game. On the other hand, that's already been done with Fire Emblem Heroes, Fire Emblem Warriors, and the Amiibos. It feels like the game creators think that the only way to engage fans is to include the past heroes, when Fire Emblem has always been about new stories every instalment :( And while I do like some of the past characters, it's not like the heroes are always my favourites :/

Is it just me, or does Alear look over-designed? The dual-coloured hair and eyes is extremely old school anime. It's a little odd to look at because the colours pop out differently, especially with the eyes. And with the whole anime look, it really feels like the story is going towards a more lighthearted feel than something a little more grounded. Not that Fire Emblem was ever that serious, but the anime-ification was always a bit ? to me. Also pet peeve was that the trailer only featured M!Alear and not F!Alear :<

I won't lie, the dress up part of the game had me like ??? OH??? I love customizing my characters in any video game, and if I can't customize the avatar's look, then at least I can dress them up lol. We had some dress up in Fire Emblem Fates, but it was just accessories. I wonder if the clothes have stats attributed to them, or if they're just cosmetic.

I haven't played Fire Emblem Three Houses, so I don't know what it's like to play the battles with more detail in terms of the graphics. I'm used to viewing the grid and units in 2d style. I don't know if seeing the characters running up in more detailed animation will be distracting. I've been playing Final Fantasy Tactics A2 and honestly the time it takes for the characters to run sometimes is kind of distracting lol. I also wonder if the 3d will make it a bit difficult to view the grid. Hopefully there'll be a way to change the angles, but it might be a bit annoying.

The story seems pretty standard. Alear is descended from the bloodline of the dragon and is therefore the one great hero who is capable of taking down the Fell Dragon. In this case, Alear has been asleep for a long long time.

I have a feeling supports are going to make their way back to the game. Supports have always been pretty fun to me, but I admit that based on the 3DS games, they worked better when each character only had supports with certain characters. When characters have supports with every single character they can marry, their conversations get pretty stale and repetitive.

In terms of the battles, I don't think they look all that different, but of course, we've only seen a preliminary trailer. The big difference was summoning the heroes of the past, "engaging" them. I suspect that they'll be kind of gimmicky, unless they unleash huge power that makes it worth it to use.

Looking forward to seeing more trailers, and once again, deciding if I should get a switch for Fire Emblem lol.

Just some small things that I think he does

wears odd socks. He likes all the fun colours but always manages to lose one of them. He never buys plain black socks, but sometimes wakes up to find most of his coloured ones gone and replaced with them

regularly goes charity/thrift shopping. Not only is it another way for him to be environmentally friendly, but the clothes in there are cheap as chips, which is good for someone on a gift shop worker's salary

speaking of the gift shop, whenever he sees a cool new paperweight, he buys one for Gus' tank. He tries to set up all the things like a real landscape at first, but ends up swapping the decorations around so often that he forgets

always so excited when he sees a school arrive at the Egyptian exhibit for a trip. He always tries to sneak away to explain an interesting fact to a group of (largely uninterested) kids, before he's dragged back to the gift shop by Donna

he also ends up infodumping about whatever product a customer is paying for, before looking up and seeing them impatiently waiting to actually pay for it. Like if they're buying a pharaoh bookmark, he absentmindedly starts talking about exactly which pharaoh it is and how you can tell and the historical significance of it and the reason it's important and th- right they're still waiting to pay

when he got fired from the museum, he started infodumping to Gus instead, because keeping it all in made him feel like he was going to explode (and Gus never gets bored and stops listening)

read The Kane Chronicles and loved it so much that he tried to read Percy Jackson too, but found that the Greek gods weren't as interesting to him as the Egyptian gods, and just reread The Kane Chronicles again instead

I was going to say that he can't put up IKEA furniture, but the amount of care and patience he approaches things with made me change my mind. He absolutely can put a flat pack table together and enjoys every second of it (Marc on the other hand... "Marc just read the instructions" "No Layla, the instructions are wrong, I can do this myself" *proceeds to make a chair when it was supposed to be a chest of draws*)

tried to look after house plants, but there wasn't enough light in his flat so they died. Then tried to look after succulents and cacti instead, but when they died too he just gave up. I do think he just has one stubborn cactus that sits on his windowsill and refuses to die, which makes him smile everytime he remembers to water it

this is such a random one, but I imagine he understands English slang really well (obviously) while Marc is just completely lost, so he tries to translate

like imagine Marc gets into an altercation with a roadman one day and he has to be like "Steven, what does back out the rambo mean?" And Steven's like "MARC HE'S THREATENING TO STAB US!!!"

Idk that's just a funny situation to me

cannot just walk past a bookshop. He tries so hard to just ignore them, but once he sees the books in the window, he's done. He loses hours in there just perusing the different titles and ends up buying like, six new books

he went vegan after seeing a documentary on food production as a kid. Seeing the way farmers treat livestock made him feel horrible, and from then on he avoided anything to do with meat and animals

reading about how cows and bulls were sacred in Egypt only reinforced his decision

I think that's it for now, but I might make a part 2!! I could talk about this show literally forever, so we'll see how it goes. I also want to say that I've never read The Kane Chronicles, so feel free to let me know who you think his favourite character would be! I'm personally a big fan of Norse mythology, so reading Magnus Chase and then trying to read Percy Jackson was a struggle. But anyway, I hope you enjoyed!!

(I really enjoyed writing this so ty for this request). now I'm simping for husbando kakashi- Also note I made it more like focusing how both y/n and kakashi are like a married couple and what they do/say to each other so hope that’s alright too ^^

synopsis: kakashi hatake is y/n’s husband, while you, as his wife, being a workaholic and how is both of your lives are like in a modern AU. (incoming some adorable headcanon-)

First off, you and I mean Y/N is the ONLY one who can see Kakashi without his mask. He feels that his wife is the only person in the world who is only allowed to see him without his mask and cause he loves and trusts you a lot. He feels only comfortable showing it to his amazing wife and no one else, not even Guy sensei (even though they were buddies since they were kids). His love for you is strong.

He would send you random messages during your work saying “Yo! make sure to take care of yourself alright?....Also, do you wanna order food tonight?”

You both work and I definitely see Kakashi in a modern AU with a job as a teacher and he would brag to you about his students. Especially Naruto (won’t shut the fuck up in the class) and Sasuke and how they always fight, making him slowly gonna lose it with them one day.

Also, he would talk to you about Shikamaru being such a rascal that gets on his nerves whenever he corrects him in class, or sleeps and whenever he says “Sensei, going to your lessons is such a drag..” and his friend Choji eats a lot of snacks at the back of the class but Kakashi secretly takes one of his snacks without him knowing.

Whenever he mentions them to you during dinner time, you feel at ease and even chuckle and start to relax. And he knows that cause he has seen you been so busy lately with work and he wants to always see you laugh and not tense up.

You both have the same timing of your break time so, you being such a workaholic, you try to even work during the breaks but someone stops you by doing that. Your awesome husband. Kakashi literally rings you even 5 minutes before your break from a video call.

You guys would defiantly match clothes and he loves that so much.

Kakashi catches you sometimes wearing his mask and he finds that so cute, it melts his heart. “Haha, you are so adorable!” and he would give you his happy face smile and hug you as you blush. You always get embarrassed and shy whenever he throws in comments such as “you look hot��, “you are my sweetheart” and etc.. and he knows that! but does it on purpose cause he likes to see how you get all red and especially in public ;)

During the weekends, he knows you wake up early to work and so he decided to change that and make the weekends to bake! Every morning in the weekend you guys would bake cookies and muffins and they smell and taste so good. (you eventually forget the load of work you had to do and Kakashi notices that and he gets happy lowkey-)

Okay, he is a big fan of reading, and so he loves reading comics and fanboys about it to you!

During your work, as you wait for the next customer you would get a random message from him and he would send screenshots of the comic and he’s like “Omg dear, did you read the latest chapter?!”. You know he is all excited so you texted him back. “Hm, No why?”. “Quick!! Go read it before I spoil it!”

Would chill and vibe with you for sure whenever you play some music and both of you are sitting at the balcony, stargazing.

He is in charge of cooking most of the time cause he knows you have more work than him and whenever he cooks, oh...it’s amazing and that’s one of the best things when you get back home after a long day.

He would brush your hair every time whenever you go out to work which is usually earlier than him

Whenever you sleep together, he would cover you up with the comforter while you sleep and would later hug you around your shoulders, he does that to hold you and also to shield you (it’s a habit of his and its cute)

He would give you also a thumbs up all the time before you leave and say “Good luck dear with work!” (it’s now your lucky charm before you leave work). Oh, and he would always remind you to take your lunch that he packs for you every early morning and he would usually put a cute little note there saying ‘Don't overwork yourself!’

I feel like he would get another small tattoo on his wrist after marrying Y/N.

During breaks if your work place is near his, you guys would have cafe break dates and he would literally recharge even if he sees a glimpse of you.

You guys have his pet dog, Pakkun, one of his smallest cute dogs who is usually grumpy but ever since Pakkun met you, they loved you instantly and listens to you instead of Kakashi. Ha....This damn dog. He would think and twitch his eyes as Pakkun is all over you. (The dog is doing that on purpose to piss Kakashi off).

Makes you stay up with him late at night reading comics and the stories you both like to spazz about it and he loves doing that with you.

All his students thought he is a lonely sad man who lives alone with his dog and reads comics.

He once caught Naruto using his phone in class and he was going to give him detention but....he was shocked to find him reading the comic that Kakashi and his wife liked the most.

Kakashi: “Naruto! I told you not to use your......Oh.” Damn he is in chapter 34 already?! I need to caught up, this little kid is fast.  

“Hm...Sensei?...WAIT! YOU READ IT TOO!” Naruto would scream and get up from his seat. “Naruto, shut up you are being loud.” Shit.

He would text you immediately after that. “Omg...Y/N! Naruto reads our favorite comic!!”

Y/N: “NO WAY! Bond with this kid, he seems cool.”

After that, his favorite student is Naruto and they become pretty close but still finds him annoying, although Kakashi finds him as a good kid. And when they have parent teacher conference, Kakashi wouldn’t mention to Minato and Kushina that he uses his phone during class or skipping some classes.

Shingeki no Kyojin Headcanons: 104th training corps (College AU - Outfits pt I)

Hello, Postmodernbeing here. I decided to continue writing about this College AU , only this time, I'm making some outfits HCs, since I'm working in a oneshot and this visuals could be helpful. Also, it seemed like a lot of fun so I've decided to give it a try. Hope y'all like this. Much love.

IMPORTANT: I do not own Shingeki no Kyojin nor the trend of this outfits-displays, only this HCs belong to me. // Contains spoilers (for the icons that I used in some characters) // English is not my first language, so I ask for your patience and understanding.

Eren Yeager

Chains and rings of stainless-steel. Combat boots matching faux-leather jackets with studs and pins from bands.

Has a few flannel shirts (that he stole from Zeke, his brother doesn't mind, tho). But for the most part, Eren's shirts are from merch of bands with a few (handmade) changes.

Eren likes to sew badly on purpose some patterns or figures by following quick tutorials. All his clothes are modified or drawn over.

While his main looks are metal head alike, he also wears snickers, hoodies, sporty pants, and jackets to class. Pretty laid back, he looks as he just woke up from a nap all the time tbh.

Sometimes goes skating but he’s not that good, his skateboard is more of a fashion statement really.

Has both ears pierced around (lobe type) and tattoos on both arms.

It’s pretty obvious to this point, but I’ll say it anyways: Eren wears black religiously. Definitely he’s open to darker shades of any color, but must wear something black at least.

Mikasa Ackerman

Our girl wears black clothes mostly. She doesn’t have a preference between skirts/dresses or pants, but you’ll rarely see her wearing jeans.

Many skirts and ripped tights to match with platform boots or classic converse. Also owns a large wardrobe with different hoodie and shirt sizes and designs yet mostly in dark shades.

Lots of necklaces and rings with perforations to match, none in her face yet lots in her ears. Mikasa has only one tattoo: Azumabito’s clan logo.

Speaking about Azumabito’s, whenever she’s working with them, she wears faux leather jackets at most, and her classic red turtleneck. Nothing too exaggerated nor formal.

A total goth since middle school, and even though in college finds it a bit unpractical, she tries to keep it as loyal to her style as possible.

Books and notebooks are part of her attires. She’d be writing or reading at any time that’s possible. Not always about her classes, tho. She also likes novels and arts. An artsy goth, perhaps?

Armin Arlert

Sky blue is his color. Matching it with classy pants and blazers in clear colors.

His wardrobe looks like one that belongs to an aristocrats’ son. Some light-academia realness.

He can pull off some casual looks with sneakers but it’s more common for him to wear his oxfords, cap toes or moccasins to class, or anywhere really.

Cardigans, vests and blazers are his best friends as soon as autumn arrives. Always in colors such as beige, green, brown, and grey.

Armin is easily the best dressed from all his group of friends, and I’m not even open to discuss this. Let’s just remember his canon outfits throughout the four seasons. Even in a Modern AU he’ll keep being the king he is.

Not a big fan of accessories though. Except for his handkerchiefs that match his blazers. Since his grandfather used to choose his clothes, he taught Armin that a handkerchief was a gentleman’s must carry. Now he wears them only to pay his grandpa honor, as a lesson more so.

Jean Kirstein

King of brown jackets and turtlenecks. Really, his wardrobe is in such color harmony. It’s impressive.

Little to no accessories besides an occasional scarf or a single ring matching some bracelet.

Although he’s used to wear a consistent type of clothes and even colors, he wouldn’t dare to define a style for himself, is it boho? art hoe? dark academia? Maybe we’ll never know.

Zero perforations only because he’s scared of pain, but Jean is really drawn into them, so he uses fake ones for his ears sometimes. Has only one little hidden tattoo, made when he started college and lost a bet against Sasha and Connie.

Jean’s always stylish, clean, and smelling like cologne. He also has an extensive routine for shaving, combing his hair and trimming his beard.

Second best dressed of all his friends. Lowkey loves fashion but keeps it for himself (and Marco). Plus, in her mother’s house he keeps more clothes than his dorm' wardrobe can storage.

Marco Bodt

Colorful, youthful, and casual, that’s his style. Marco’s clothes reflect his joyful personality and every time he enters a room, he brightens the mood so easily.

A lot of denim and if he’s not wearing bright colors, you can be sure he’s caring something white with him (a bandana, a baseball cap, a scarf or his sneakers).

Shares with Jean a special appreciation for clothing, except Marco prefers more laidback and casual outfits.

Has no tattoos but recently got both ears pierced. He decided to since he really likes the earrings that k-pop idols wear.

If spring was a wardrobe, Marco would have it. I can’t stress this enough. Just so pretty and genuine.

Also, he definitely uses accessories (small jelly or colorful rings, bracelets of all kinds and simple necklaces) but there's more, he uses objects that are not meant to as accessories too. Such as band aids and small stickers around his face, skates in his backpack and flowers in his pockets.

Sasha Blouse

Unironically messy style. No matching patterns nor colors, different textures and sizes that made little to no coordination in her outfits. Unaesthetic is her aesthetic.

She likes baggy jackets and jeans with big pockets for snacks obviously, midi-skirts and graphic tees. Sasha is the definition of zero fucks given and still looking cute.

Of course, she knows how to pull off some cool outfits, it’s just that she doesn’t care that much unless is specifically required.

Not a big fan of accessories besides belts (maybe) and her backpack. Unless we’re talking about bucket hats that became a must wear thanks to Connie.

“Borrows” Nicolo’s hoodies/shirts that wears with her favorite threads. Then plays dumb when her bf asks her about his clothes. They both secretly love that dynamic.

Sasha plays it safe when it's about her hairstyle, also not a big fan of makeup -at least not the way Mikasa or Historia do-, but she’s open to try new things if her best friends dare her to.

Connie Springer

King of striped shirts and golden chains. His style is mainly urban and youthful. Conniegod remains unmatched in his awesomeness even in a Modern AU, if you ask me.

Owns a collection of sneakers that wears with his numerous printed socks. So creative and colorful.

Also, Connie has a small collection of unique shaped tinted glasses, also bucket hats and simple stainless steel chains.

Has small fun tattoos around his legs and arms, ears pieced but nothing too grunge. Speaking of which, he matches religiously his earrings with his chains that hang of his belt.

Usually wears dress pants or cargo pants. Anything but denim or really skinny fitted pants. Coincidentally, most of his shirts are loose too.

Definitely brings his skateboard with him all the time so it’s part of the outfit, really (Eren tried to copy that from Connie, let’s be honest). He’s so good at skating, and when he doesn’t feel like walking around campus, skating is always a good idea.
