Reflecting on a Fallen Friend During a Gloomy April

Good evening, vampire hunters.

On Easter Sunday, Tobias, Ioana and her otter companion, Gani had traveled to a cross in the remote highlands in the Conifers Kingdom to visit the grave of a historian that dedicated his life to preserving documents of an ancient civilization ruled by machines. A long time ago in Ioana's childhood before she joined Frederick’s band of heroes, she came to be acquainted with this man at her mother’s cafe while he was waiting for her to pour his cappuccino. Ioana asked why he was interested in this type of coffee and his answer was that it was a popular drink in this civilization. Coffee beans were once cultivated in this industrious society and since it valued hard work in a time where an intergalactic empire plotted to wipe it out, there was little room for rest. Ioana wondered how a civilization with state-of-the-art technology could not flourish into the twenty-first century. The historian wished to find answers and one day open a museum for astronomers to study in once his research is complete. Ioana traveled with him for a year and a half to locate surviving pieces of computers before he embarked on an expedition in Florida. Every day, she would ask her mother about him in the hope he’d stop by the café again and her answer was always, “He’s a wanderer that has seen different worlds. He’ll be okay.” One Halloween night, Ioana came by the café after trick-or-treating and she found her distraught mother reading a letter that the historian sent her. She approached her and asked her usual question. Her mother said nothing and handed her the letter. The historian was chased by the Veiled Nocturne and had been captured minutes after he delivered the letter through a portal small enough to fit his hand. His fate remained unknown, but rumors that circulated through the town the next day hinted that Dracula had him sentenced to death. It is said that he discovered a secret that he did not want his enemies to uncover and keeping him as one of the unliving would be too big of a risk. The only object Ioana had kept to remember her time with the historian was a hand-sized mechanism used to predict the appearance of constellations and eclipses. She had found it in a swamp on the outskirts of Vireo City.

Thinking back to that painful night, Ioana shed a tear while stroking Gani’s back. She regretted her inability to save this historian from meeting such a tragic end even though she was too powerless to step in without risking her own life. She vowed that in his memory, she will locate remnants of the fallen civilization in her travels so that the magical sector can learn from its downfall and stand up to the Veiled Nocturne. If they allow Dracula to conquer London, the light will burn out like a lone candle in an empty room and all that has made the world of magic a wondrous place will be lost. Ioana gives the cross a sad smile and gives Gani a kiss. She whispers to him, “We can complete his work...It will be hard, but we’re going to have lots of fun. I promise.” She and Tobias walks down a hilltop to a river bank where Frederick and the group have set up camp. Cronix looks on as she leaves and nods his head with a smile on his face. Virgil and Clara (Mădălina's parents); they met in college, both in their "young" phase, both away from home and not in contact with their parents. Ugly divorce not many years down the line, with her going abroad and cutting contact with him and the kids.

Cristian and Ioana (Laurențiu's parents); they got married because they had a child, and they, too, were considered the rebels of their respective families. He did not end up a good husband, much less a good father, but she didn't leave.

All of them. V&C because they got separated never to even talk again, C&I because they're distant despite living under the same roof. But to be honest, it applies to Laurențiu and Mădălina, too. They, too, have not learned how to manage their own problems, much less conflict with another, and their immediate instinct is just fight or flight.

Laurențiu and Mădălina; they also relate based on feeling like outcasts (and based on how they identify with their suffering); he is the more "runaway" type among the two of them, but he eventually learns to overcome that, too, and they eventually reconcile and mend their relationship in a genuine way. In this regard, they do break the cycle of their parents, as it neither gets to the point of divorce, nor do they just stay together for the sake of it while resentment bubbles up

And in this one too, Mahito leaves the tower and it crumbles behind him, but he can still remember? In this one, he carries the memento with him, not unlike Chihiro and her charmed hair-tie, but it's framed in this kind way - 'You're not supposed to remember, and you must forget, but you can carry it with you for a while yet' and this gentleness absolutely fucking ruins me.

HOWDY EVERYONE- so excited to FINALLY be able to show off my piece for this year's Bumbleby Big Bang!

Unfortunately no accompanying story as of yet- but I really hope you guys get to read it someday! The premise involves Yang cursed to be trapped inside a sword, which was an idea I KNEW I had to make move.

Details and development stuff under the cut!

Lots of fun collaboration with the author, Celeste! We worked together to find the look-of-picture, Blake's outfit, how the Grimm look, the style of the sword, the whole shabang! I'm really happy with how it all turned out!

When I first saw all the prompts, even before claims opened, I got to work on a handful of exploration pieces based on some of the summaries, to decide which of the stories I was interested in would be the best fit. Here's the initial idea for this one I put together over a lunch break:

After showing Celeste, we got to work finding the look we wanted! Went back and forth a bit and found this great look for Blake! Also shoutout to Pinterest boards for visdev inspiration I love you Pinterest boards.

Just about everything stayed to final anim, with the simplification of getting rid of that purple cloth hanging from her belt, (since I already had the rope ends to think about working with), and the light purple strap across the chest, since leaving it out would simplify the linework on her chest.

The sword also went through a bit of change! Celeste had the idea of Yang making the sword catch on fire, which I LOVED. I went with a split design so we can see the fire more clearly start from the hilt and grow to cover the whole blade.

And from there we brainstormed animation ideas! I went all over Youtube for video reference of sword work (that would be complex enough to be interesting, but short enough to be manageable). I found something we liked from Motion Actor Inc., a channel I've used LOTS for both personal and professional work (I work in 3D Animation, for those who don't know). I edited this together, to see the action from multiple places at once, which gave me the idea for that camera move that's in the final anim!

Now for the fun part! Make that badboy MOVE. For the cam turn, the first frame she's in the air I'm referencing the top left video, and the frame she lands I'm referencing the bottom left one. While she's airborne I'm just inbetweening that! No reference for the Grimm, just wanted it responding to her attacks, but I end up tweaking the roughs later on to make the block feel stronger.

Then from there we had to actually figure out Grimm designs! Nimona had just released, and Celeste and I loved it, so she asked if I could take some inspiration from Nimona's shadow form! GLADLY. Here's what I came up with!

I was going between how the movies and comic designed Nimona, really loving the almost liquid shadow of the movie, but also how the comics had this broken up/held together rougher form. Celeste liked the second to last one the best! The original plan was to have it leave a wispy shadow trail like the concept art, but to simplify the animation we left it solid instead!

Next up is tiedown! Basically just getting the roughs more on-model, so the lineart comes out nice and clean. I've also transferred the new Grimm design to the base from earlier, and fire's also outlined orange so it reads clearer. (SPOILER- if you look REAL close here, you can see Yang visible in the fire! I liked the idea of Blake's slash also doubling as Yang throwing a punch. The idea is in the concept art earlier but now it's working with the action.)

Next step- final look of picture!! I asked Celeste for sources of inspiration to draw from when thinking about environment design, and we got Nimona, She-Ra, and Owl House! Used each of those as springboards for shading style, colour palettes, and how the fire would look!

From there, we kept the straight trees/bush/lake/foreground greenery from the first one, the blues from the second, and the fire from the third!

Once I had this frame, it was a matter of working backwards and making the background work pre-camera turn (which was ABSOLUTELY the most challenging part of this process). Learned a lot doing this! Procreate isn't quite equipped to make something like this efficient, but I'm pleased to say that Dreams would make something like this easier in the future (keyframing objects instead of hand-drawing/spacing duplicates by hand, for example).

From then on it was just colouring the lineart, adding shading, and finishing up the background! Beginning-to-end this whole process was beginning of July to end of October!

I had an absolute BLAST putting all this together. Here's to next year where I find a way to do something even more ridiculously complicated!! It's fun!!!

Rejoice in the Garden with Care

Good evening, vampire hunters.

Frederick and Eforie are getting ready to look for Clément, a wise red cat that hangs around Baudelaire City, but aspiring heroes cannot find him anywhere. The day may not be over yet, but if the wolves have gotten him in a previous attack, it could take ages for these heroes to know where to start, leaving the city vulnerable to the next strike. They’ll have to settle for these weapons, hoping they’ll at least keep the wolves at bay until dawn. I haven’t vectored them yet so the best that can happen is that they’ll walk away with nasty paper cuts. (Don’t tell Sidiyq Qadim!)

Meanwhile, in the present, our heroes of Waltz of Sepulchral Silence and The Heliotrope Chronicles are celebrating Frederick’s birthday in Esther’s secret garden. Ioana and Lucinda are occupying their time searching for a chocolate cake hidden in one of the bricks while their companions are chatting below them. Ioana expresses her concern that no one knows how long the cake had been concealed for and if it is still edible once found. Lucinda laughs it off and regales her with a tale of how during his quest to save his brother, Florentin Chinezu found a freshly cooked pot roast in a crevice after tearing a hole in a cavern wall with his handcrafted sword.

Ioana is baffled by Lucinda’s argument, suggesting that the roast was prepared moments before it was placed in the crevice, but the rebuttal heightens Lucinda’s expectations. She turns her head right and notices a gilded platinum brooch with an amethyst crested in the middle hidden inside a vase full of flowers. She forgets about the chocolate cake for a moment and believes the brooch would be a perfect present for Frederick. She reaches her hand inside and grabs it, but what the clumsy Lucinda didn’t realize was that the act summoned rogue elemental drones to the group’s location. Embarrassed, she tried to apologize, but Frederick, Eforie, Jay, and Ioana sprang into action to deal with the sentient crystals. Sadly for Lucinda and Esther, the sisters could only watch the battle unfold. They neglected to take the time to find weapons of their own when entering the garden and they possess no magic of their own. They inherited their mother’s belief that violence is never the answer, but never have they entered a world where it is common to kill or be killed yourself, specifically inside Dracula’s castle. Even the most serene, colorful areas in his domain is a battleground in the making. Lucinda and Esther will have to start looking for weapons if they hope to resume the birthday celebration quicker and just maybe, they’ll have to infiltrate the Caustic Cakery for ingredients in case the chocolate cake is nowhere to be found.
