Religious Studies Term If The Day: Janam-Sakhis

Hey everyone. I hope y’all are doing well. Today I wanted to talk about the janam-sakhis, which is the Punjabi word for “Birth Stories.” These are collections of stories that are about the Sikh Gurus, not unlike the Torah and Neviim of Judaism, the Gospels of Christianity, or the Hadith of Islam. At least that’s how I’ve understood them. I have read some excerpts from these stories, but I really want to read them more. I’m actually hoping that these kinds of texts would find themselves in world literature classes so people would understand more cultures than just Ancient Greece or Israel or England and so on. But that’s just my opinion, and I’m always open to hear what others have to say about that.
