I'm having more Ted thoughts but this time they're heartbreaking.

I was rereading @unusual-ly 's post about the implications of Ted's love interests (read it here) and it made me realize something.

Has anyone ever held Ted's hand?

We technically don't know if Ted had a partner in high school but I doubt it. And even if he did, that was 20 years ago. In the past 20 years, he's been the horny bastard of Hatchetfield. The guy who will sleep with anyone who's willing. He's not someone you date.

Since Jenny was only a friend, they wouldn't have done anything like that, even if they both wanted to.

Charlotte would certainly never hold his hand. She's just sleeping with him because her husband sucks and she constantly feels guilty about it anyway. She doesn't have feelings for him.

I think technically Lucy DOES hold his hand once but it's to lead him somewhere, not for any romantic reason (at least at that point). It's the way you hold a child's hand so you don't lose them.

Even at the end of Black Friday when Charlotte has her hand over Ted's, it's because the world is literally ending and she's seeking out comfort. She'd probably hold ANYONE'S hand at that point.

So yeah. As far as we know, no one has romantically held Ted's hand in 20+ years and that just breaks my heart.

TIME BASTARD LYRIC OVER ANALYZATION

Jenny loves Ted… the younger Ted, not who he has become. He is both far from her temporally and emotionally. He has become someone she no longer knows. A bastard. Who time travels.

Ted is no longer playing the love game. He is playing the, as Richie would say, ~hit it and quit it, bro~ game. He’s a womanizer without shame. But he still thinks he can fix himself and be the kinda person he thinks Jenny wanted to make up for losing her.

It’s Ted’s destiny to lose Jenny, become a dick, and die in every timeline. She wants nothing to do with him.

NOW! Here is where I think Jenny starts referring to another person. A. Ted is not a criminal mastermind of any kind. He literally stumbles into another timeline. Who IS the mastermind of this misadventure? TINKY. 2. Even if “you” refers to Ted, why then switch to “the bastard” instead of “you bastard” again. This is a third person address. Another - tinky. He’s the one with the time to fall, Ted has already lost all control over his own timeline. Now it’s THE BASTARD OF ACTUAL TIME AND SPACE’s adventure (also, I would like to point out I think the term “bastard” in T’noy Karaxis’ title actually refers to him being a product of these two forces)

There’s two of them. Two Ted’s - younger and elder. And two bastards.

Now, Idk what “I followed once or twice” means at all in this sequence of events or in Jenny’s story. If someone has an idea please enlighten me.

OKAY! SO if this section is about Ted than 1. The student is either Ted’s younger self become a douche and ruining Ted’s chances at a good life, or 2. Jenny, the student, his beloved, dying. OR 3. What if… hear me out… Pete is the only crack in Tinky’s armor. Tinky wants both of them SO BAD but only one! (1)! Ever joins the box. Tinky’s weakness IS THE OTHER SPANKOFFSKI!

Finally. Someone said on Genius lyrics that the first line here references Jenny’s letter. Maybe because she signed it “forever and always”. Ted thinks she wants to erase him from her life and leave him forever but he doesn’t know that truth. She loves him no matter what, she doesn’t need to know where he has been (aka what he has been up to all these years, all the bad things he’s done since they knew each other) she just wants to know what TIME he is in. Not what he has done, but what has happened TO HIM. What IS HAPPENING to him.

They’re the only Hatchetfield couple we’ve seen truly FATED TO BE APART. Jenny died in 2004, aka very likely before the timelines split. She dies right in front of him. In every timeline. And it breaks him apart.

lucy's love theme - romantic piano piece all over ape man whenever lucy interacts with konk. comes back at the end for chumby :)

theme i thought was for konk but i vaguely remember hearing in non-konk contexts outside of this episode. will report back later

paulkins theme - NOT forever and always or anything from tgwdlm! seems to be unique to its episode, maybe a droid23 thing? it's gorgeous. plays during the wedding after emma runs off, and a few more times toward the end

ted theme??? - i wanted to label this as a ted/jenny love theme, but interestingly jenny has a separate theme more closely associated with her. not heard outside of time bastard to my knowledge (every instance of ted in nmt2 is accompanied by time bastard). first heard at the wedding when ted reminisces to hidgens, along with several variations in 2004

jenny theme - as mentioned above! heard a few times in the alt-timeline wedding and then later in the episode as she writes her letter to ted. gorgeous as well.

tinky - mentioned this in another post but i believe this may also double for kilgore within time bastard. spooky little 4-note chromatic idea used as an accent or ostinato, later referenced in killer track

i've watched more with a friend and noticed a few other character themes that i'm very excited to pin down as i go >:) and hopefully i can transcribe an example of each for easy reference

the more i think about ted & charlotte the sadder i get about it actually. if ted had a nickel for every time a redhead woman he loved couldn’t really be with him because of a shithead dude played by jeff blim and also because ted himself wasn’t brave enough to talk to her properly, and then he watched her die in front of him in a way he could’ve prevented, he’d have 2 nickels. which isn’t a lot but it’s heartbreaking that it happened twice
