Man in a Suitcase: All That Glitters (1.10, ITC, 1967)
"But I understand that. Cos I help people too."

In all honesty, Y/N never liked fighting with her parents, especially TK. TK was her lifeline and even though he hadn't been there when she was born or with her in her early years, he was certainly making up for it. So when they fight it breaks them and Carlos. Carlos may have never wanted kids, or at least not yet, but when he met TK's little girl everything changed. Y/N is both of their's whole world even if she doesn't know it.
Y/N didn't like keeping things from her parents but for some reason, she thought this had to be kept from them, what a mistake that was. She wanted to go to a party that her boyfriend, Max, was throwing and attending. Her dads never really liked this boyfriend of hers and thought he was a bad influence. After some persuasion from her and she promised not to fall for his traps they let her date him. The party was on a Saturday and it was a Friday night so now she had to persuade them to let her go and if they said no then she was going to sneak out.
They had just sat down for dinner when she thought it was a good time to bring it out. "Hey, a friend of mine is having a party this Saturday. Can I go?" She asked as she took a bite of her food. TK and Carlos looked at each other.
"Which friend?" Carlos asked after we swallowed and before he took a drink of his drink.
"Kathleen." Y/N said liking the way this was going. Even though that was a lie and Max was throwing the party.
"Are her parents going to be there?" TK asked and when Y/N didn't answer they knew the answer.
"If no parents are going to be there, then it's a hard no." Carlos said
"You guys never let me have fun. It's just one unsupervised party. Max is going to be there." She said getting angry.
"The answer is no especially since Max is going to be there." TK said and she huffed.
"Oh come on! You guys are never going to like him if you don't trust him." She exclaimed
"He doesn't give off very good vibes Cariño." Carlos said trying to stay calm.
"You said you were going to give him a chance." She said and they both sighed.
"We will but not when he's going to be at an unsupervised party with our daughter." TK said and she huffed. They finished their supper in silence, once she was done she stormed off upstairs.
It was a Friday night which meant that both of her parents had to work well into the night, well TK would be working a full 24 hours and Carlos an 12-hour shift. She smiled when she remembered that. They were both going in at 10 PM and it was just now 9:50 PM. Carlos and TK were getting ready and discussing if they really wanted to leave her alone, but they both came to the conclusion that she was a smart girl and that she would make wise decisions. They liked to think that they raised her right. As both the parents were done they walked to the bottom of the stairs. "Y/N, we're about to leave!" TK yelled out and she came downstairs even though she was mad at them she still loved them. When she got down they hugged each other and said their goodbyes and love yous to each other and they were off. Now she just had to wait until they were completely gone. The party started at midnight and would last well into the night and morning. She watched them leave and smiled to herself and waved when they waved at her.
Alright! They're gone! Wanna come over and get ready with me?
Kathleen: I'll be over soon!
Y/N smiled and threw her phone onto the bed and they began to get ready. The two girls talked and giggled. "How did you convince them to go?" Kathleen asked and Y/N shook her head.
"I didn't. They said no but Papa is working until 10 AM and Dad is working a full 24 hrs. I'm planning on staying with Max for the night." She said with a smirk.
"You sneaky little shit." Kathleen said and slightly slapped her on the arm as they both giggled. As 11:59 PM rolled around both of the girls were out the door and heading to Max's house, she noticed that it was colder than usual and wished that she would’ve worn warmer clothing. They got there right at midnight they walked into the house and Y/N greeted Max with a kiss and then a couple of minutes later the party was in full swing.
Around the 30-minute mark, Y/N lost track of Kathleen but she didn't care she was with Max and she had a couple of drinks in her. Her parents would be so upset with her but what they didn't know won't kill them. She was having a great time and nothing could stop it.
3 AM is when the party died down and officially ended at 4 AM. Max was there to make sure everyone was out and then it was just him, Y/N, and Kathleen. They all three looked at each other and then headed into the living room where they sat and talked. "This was probably the best party you've thrown." Kathleen said looking at Max and he smiled.
"I have to agree with that. I'm so glad you guys could come." Max said as he threw an arm over Y/N and she snuggled into him. Kathleen yawned and then they all laughed.
"Well, I better get home. Y/N you staying?" She asked and the other girl nodded.
"Let me know when you get home." Y/N said and Kathleen nodded and made her way out. Max and Y/N both decided that it was time to head to bed and Max would deal with the aftermath later. 10 minutes later she got a text from Kathleen that she was home and now she could sleep in peace.
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
Max and Y/N slept until their alarm went off at 9:30 AM. It was hard for them to get up neither wanting to leave each other's arms but she had to get home. She got up and put her shoes on and they both headed downstairs the house was trashed but neither of them cared and Max said he would take care of it later. She kissed him and then he was watching her be on her way. He hated that she had to leave but knew that she took a risk and came to the party.
When she stepped outside she shivered. When did it get so cold? She thought to herself as she made her trek back home. When she got to her driveway she saw Carlos' car in the driveway and froze, she would've stayed there much longer but the wind blew and sent a shiver up her spine. Maybe he was in bed and she could go through the front door but then he just got home so her bedroom window it was.
It was really starting to turn cold as she began climbing up the short distance to her second-story room. "Holy shit it's cold." She said to herself as she put one leg through her window that was thankfully unlocked and as she ducked to bring the rest of her body in she thought she was in the clear but she was in fact not.
"What do you think you are doing?" Carlos said and she froze she pulled her body into the room and looked at him.
"Just getting a fresh of breath air." She said and he frowned and crossed his arms.
"Did you go to the party that we said that you couldn't go to?" Carlos said and she didn't say anything "You know I'm going to have to tell your father about this." He said as he pulled out his phone and her mouth dropped.
"What? No. It was just one party and everyone was safe despite the alcohol being there." She said and they both froze.
"What did you just say?" He asked and she shook her head as her eyes widened. Just as one of them was about to speak the door opened.
"Guys! I'm home!" TK said and both of them were still silent. "Guys?" TK said as he walked up the stairs still in his uniform.
"What are you doing home?" Y/N asked TK as he took in the scene before him.
"Dad let me have some time off. Weather is coming in. What is going here?" He asked and she bent her head as Carlos answered.
"I just caught our daughter sneaking into her room after she snuck out to go to the party we told her not to go." Carlos said and TK's expression turned into one of rage and disappointment. "There was alcohol involved as well." He added and Y/N looked up.
"I didn't drink of it. After the party I stayed with Max and Kathleen went home. I wasn't going to walk back home in the dark." She said
"So not only did you lie to us about Kathleen throwing the party it was actually Max." TK said and she knew that she was defeated and when neither of them said anything they walked out and headed downstairs and she followed. When they got to the living room they turned to her.
"We are disappointed in you. We raised you better than this. We're grounding you." Carlos said and her jaw dropped.
"What? That is not fair! It was just one party and I learned from my mistakes." She said almost pleading.
"Not going to happen. You're grounded. End of story." TK said and she huffed and she stormed out of the living room and into the kitchen and they followed her. "Where are you going?" He added and she turned to them.
"I'm going to Max's house. I don't know when I'll be back." She said and stormed out of the house before her fathers could stop her. They looked at each other not knowing what to do but hopes she gets somewhere before the storm hit.
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
Y/N was in fact heading to Max's house but then it turned colder and it started to snow. This was not good. She had been walking clearing her head before she headed there that had been 6 hrs ago. She didn't even grab a jacket or anything to keep warm. Max lived several blocks away more into the country side of Texas. As she was walking to passed by another person that was walking trying to get out of the storm.
"Hey! I think we need to find shelter!" The male said and she nodded her head "I'm Nate Adams!" He shouted as the wind started to pick up.
"I'm Y/N Strand!" She shouted back the snow was falling faster and getting thicker. "Hey there is a cabin further up! It should be a good place to take shelter!" She said and they fought their way through the blizzard to the cabin. As they were climbing a steep bank of snow Y/N tripped and fell and into a puddle that hadn't quite frozen yet.
"Woah! Are you ok?" Nate asked as he helped her up.
"No, I'm freezing." She said a the wind died down but not for long. They made it to the cabin where they were luckily able to get in due to it being unlocked. By they time she got in her teeth were chattering. She sat down on the old couch as Nate looked around as she tried to warm up.
"There isn't any firewood and this place looks abandoned. I could go out but it would be a risk." He said and she shook her head as she shivered.
"Not worth the risk." She said as her teeth chattered.
"We need to find a way to get you warmed up." He said looking around once again. She really got a good look at him. He was tall about 6'0" and fit with some muscles. He had perfectly styled blonde hair that was cut short, but in a cute way, and some brunette was showing. He was handsome. Much cuter than Max if she had to be honest.
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
TK and Carlos were at home it had been 6 hrs since she had slipped out of the house and had ran off. They were getting nervous so what do they do? They call their fathers and let them know what is going and to keep a look out for the teenager. First they called Owen then they called Gabriel both letting them know that they would keep and eye out for her. Then they reluctantly called Max but he said that he hadn't seen her since this morning. Carlos came up behind TK and hugged him. "It's all my fault." He said and Carlos shook his head.
"No it's not. She has every right to be upset. We'll find her and she'll be just fine. She's a fighter after all. Look at who her dad is. She gets it from you." Carlos said and TK turned around kissed him. They both decided that they would go back to work that way they could help look for her and it would keep them from spiraling. They just hoped that she was ok not somewhere warm and safe.
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
It was now into the 14th hr and Y/N was doing worse. She didn't feel cold anymore and that scared her. Nate had given her his jacket hoping that would warm her up and it did but she was still in wet clothing which was defiantly not helping. She wanted to close her eyes but fought against it. She shakily grabbed her phone and found that it was nearly dead, she forgot to charge it last night. Everything felt numb and her phone didn't stay in her hands for long before it fumbled out of her hands. "I think I should go look for help." Nate said and she shook her head.
"No it's too dangerous." She said though it was coming out slurred.
"I promise I will be back." He got his phone "What is your number?" He asked and she gave it to him he saved it and sent a text and her phone dinged. "Now you have my number and can call me if I'm not back in 30 minutes." He said and she nodded and was going to give him his jacket but he shook his head. "Keep it. I'll be ok." He said and she got comfortable and he headed out. She hoped he would be back.
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
Carlos spent most of his time at the 126 that way he could be close to TK. Everyone was sitting around waiting for a call hoping they wouldn't get one and hoping they would at the same time. When they bells went off they took off and Carlos was right behind them. They had gotten a call about an unconscious teenager but they didn't get any other specifics. TK and Carlos along with everyone else hoped it was Y/N that way she would be safe with them but at the same time not because they didn't want her to be freezing. When they got to the destination they got to work. Everyone deflated when they saw it was a male and not a female. "What do we got?" Tommy asked as they got to work on him.
"16 year old male. Hypothermia. Unconscious." Nancy said as they began to move him and he started to wake up. "Sir, do you know where you are?" She asked.
"Y/N. Cabin." He said shivering TK and Carlos looked at each other.
"What about her? What's your name?" Carlos asked
"She's in the cabin about 20 minutes from here. Name is Nate." He said and then fell unconscious. Everyone looked at each other and seemed in agreement Nancy and Tommy would take him and the rest would head up to the cabin.
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
When 30 minutes came up she called Nate but before it could even ring her phone died and she groaned and put it in her pocket. She had gotten up from the couch and in the center of the living room. Why? She didn't know why, it just made sense in her head. The wind was howling and she could see the snow falling and had probably blocked the door. She was fighting so hard not to close her eyes but the darkness was inviting and it felt warm. She wanted to be warm. Before she could even begin to close her eyes there was shouting and banging on the door but she didn't have the strength to get up and open or make a sound. "Y/N if you can hear me, we're coming to get you." Carlos said but she didn't register it has being him everything was underwater and fuzzy. There was banging on the door and the windows and there was a crash and cold consumed her.
"Y/N!" TK hollered out and ran to her with Carlos right behind him. "Princess, you're ok." He said and when he laid hands on her he winced she was freezing cold and her clothing was like ice.
"Dad? Papa?" She said in a quiet voice and he pained them.
"We're here Cariño." Carlos said and bent down as both parents cradled her.
"So cold." She said and then fell into the more than welcomed darkness. This panicked them and everyone else in the room.
"Ok, everyone start making a clear path and Carlos you're going to drive her to the hospital." Owen said and everyone nodded and got to work. Carlos picked his and TK's daughter up and started to walk out of the cabin and straight to his car that had the heat blasting. He sat her down in the backseat and TK got in the back with her and hugged her trying to get heat to her and wake her but neither was working and that was scaring him. Carlos sped out of the country road and onto the main road with Owen and the rest of the crew behind them.
"How is she doing?" Carlos asked looking back in the review mirror and then back to the road.
"Not good. How close are we?" TK asked working on his daughter, something he never hoped he had to do.
"Here." Carlos said and threw the car in park and opened the back door for them both as TK grabbed her and they ran into the hospital. Owen had called ahead and warned the hospital and they were waiting for them. TK rattled off what was happening and they took off to begin the warming up process and hopefully the waking up process and hoping that they weren't too late.
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
3 hrs is how long the 126 had to wait for any news on Mini TK and they were a nervous wreck. If she was anything like her dad then tragedy and hospitals are going to be in her future.... a lot. They let Kathleen know what was going on and they let Max know too but only one responded. When her doctor came out they called out her name and the fathers and Owen walked up to her. "She very hypothermic and currently in ICU. Her body temperature was 89°F and we are getting it back up slowly. With her body temperature being low her body went into shock and sent her into a coma. We're currently monitoring her. We're only allowing two people to be with her at this time. Although people can stop in to see her only two people can stay the entire time." She said and they nodded.
"We're her fathers. We'll be staying with her." TK said and she nodded and lead them the way to her. When they got to her they felt their hearts dropped. She had been intubated and serval IV lines running to her. They took a seat beside her and waited. Everyone had left to finish out their shifts but they were right back at the hospital waiting on news.
Andrea, Gabriel, and Owen were the ones that stayed the most since they were Mini TK's grandparents. It was going into a week and nothing had changed. They did get information on Nate and he was awake and recovering. When he heard that she was in the hospital too he decided to pay her a visit. He asked the nurses where she was and they led him to her. Carlos and TK looked up when they heard a knock and they smiled and he returned it and walked into the room when they motioned him to come in. "Hey, you don't know me. I'm Nate Adams. You're daughter and I took shelter together." He said and both fathers agreed that they liked him better than they did Max.
"Thank you for getting our daughter to safety." Carlos said and Nate nodded. "How are you doing?" He asked.
"Better. I'm being released in a day or two." He said and they nodded and he sat down when they offered him a seat. They talked and got to know him and they really liked him. He eventually had to go back to his room but he promised to come and visit when he was able to and that made them smile.
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
It was during the night when she started showing signs of waking up. Both parents were asleep but woke up when they heard rustling and alarms blaring. Nurses rushed in and pushed them out of the way just as soon as Mini TK's eyes shot up and she began coughing. Orders were thrown out and they got her extubated and then once her doctor was happy with everything she left. Carlos and TK walked up to her and she smiled at them "I knew you guys would find me. I'm sorry for walking out and then getting caught in a snow storm." She said then her expression turned to one of seriousness "How's Nate?" She asked and they smiled.
"Hey, it's ok. We forgive you and we're both sorry." Carlos said.
"As for Nate. He's doing good. He came down to visit you earlier today. We really like him." TK said and she smiled and blushed. They talked for awhile and everyone came by to see her and bring her presents. They kept her in ICU for a few more hours when they were satisfied with her improvement they brought her to a regular room and wanted to keep her for at least two more days.
During those two days she was fussed over by Carlos and TK and everyone else. Kathleen had came to visit and they gossiped about everything especially Nate. Max had yet to answer texts or calls or even show up. While TK and Carlos went to get something to eat after her telling them that she would be fine they reluctantly agreed and went down to the cafeteria. She was watching TV when she heard a knock on the door and her thinking it was one of them members of the 126 told them to come in and then she looked over and saw Nate. "Nate! How are you?" She asked.
"Better now that I know you're ok." He said sat down in the chair beside her. She blushed madly.
"I tried to call but my phone died when I hit call." She said and looked down and he smiled and took her hand.
"Hey, its ok." He said and she smiled.
"How did they find you and me?" She asked
"Apparently someone called 911 and when they found me I told them where you were." He said and she smiled "I lost consciousness soon after and woke up here." He said with a smile. They continued to talk and it was real easy to talk to him. They liked the same things and had the same hobbies. They had so many things in common more so than her and Max. She really liked Nate better than Max even after one day. After all they did survive a freak blizzard together.
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
Carlos and TK were walking back up from the cafeteria and when they reached her room they paused. Inside was Nate and Y/N talking and seeming like they were enjoying each others company. They decided to let the two teenagers talk and they would come back later. As they were walking they smiled for several reasons. 1. Their daughter was ok and would make a full recovery. 2. She found another friend and hopefully an even better boyfriend. They really liked the idea of him and her together despite them not wanting her to grow up but if its with someone they like and someone that would treat her right and save her from a blizzard.... then that is a win in their book.

The actor Ian Lavender, who has died aged 77, played the awkward, impulsive Private Frank Pike in the long-running BBC comedy Dad’s Army, and was the last surviving member of the cast who portrayed Captain Mainwaring’s Home Guard platoon.
Most of the part-time soldiers depicted in the series, which ran from 1968 to 1977, were exempted from call-up to the army during the second world war because of advanced age. Pike, their junior in most cases by several decades, had been excused because of his weak chest, and always wore the scarf insisted upon by his widowed mum, Mavis.
In spite of their foibles and foolishness, Mainwaring’s pomposity and the frequent slapstick sequences, the heroes of Dad’s Army were courageous men prepared to give their lives to protect their country, and it was this innate nobility that lifted the series, written by David Croft and Jimmy Perry, to greatness. At its peak it had more than 18 million weekly viewers, and is still regularly rerun.
There were many catchphrases – Lance Corporal Jones’s “Don’t panic!”, Private Frazer’s “We’re doomed!” and Sergeant Wilson’s languid “Do you think that’s wise, sir?” – and the best-remembered belongs to the gangster movie-fixated Pike, though he did not utter it himself: Mainwaring’s weary “You stupid boy!”
Pike was also involved in Dad’s Army’s most frequently quoted joke. “What is your name?” snarls the German U-boat commander who has been captured by the platoon. “Don’t tell him, Pike,” shouts Mainwaring. There was often great subtlety in the inter-platoon relationships, best exemplified by that of Pike and Wilson (John Le Mesurier). Wilson, whom Pike calls Uncle Arthur, is Mrs Pike’s lodger, and is forever fussing around the boy, making sure his scarf is on tight and gently steering him away from danger. It was not until the end of the final series that Lavender asked Croft if “Uncle Arthur” was actually Pike’s father. “Of course,” replied Croft.
Born in Birmingham, Ian was the son of Edward, a policeman, and Kathleen (nee Johnson), a housewife; his mother often took him to see pantomimes, variety shows and Saturday morning cinema, which gave him his first ambitions to become an actor. After performing in many school drama productions at Bournville boys’ technical school he was accepted, with the help of a grant from the city of Birmingham, by the Bristol Old Vic acting school. Clearly far from being a stupid boy, he passed 12 O-levels and four A-levels. “The only reason I don’t have a degree is because I went to drama school,” he said years later.
He made his first television appearance soon after he graduated from Bristol in 1968, playing an aspiring writer whose family want him to get a proper job, in Ted Allan’s play for the Half Hour Story series, Flowers at My Feet, with Angela Baddeley and Jane Hylton.
In the same year, he was cast as Pike, joining the seasoned veterans of comedy and the classics Le Mesurier, Arthur Lowe (Mainwaring), Clive Dunn (Jones), John Laurie (Frazer), James Beck (Private Walker), Arnold Ridley (Private Godfrey) and Bill Pertwee as Air Raid Warden Hodges. Janet Davies played Mrs Pike.
While Dad’s Army catapulted Lavender to national fame at the age of 22, the role of Pike haunted him for the rest of his long career. Not that he had any complaints.
Asked in 2014 if he got fed up with a lifetime of having “stupid boy” called out to him in the street, he replied: “I’m very proud of Dad’s Army. If you asked me ‘Would you like to be in a sitcom that was watched by 18 million people, was on screen for 10 years, and will create lots of work for you and provide not just for you but for your children for the next 40-odd years?’ – which is what happened – I’d be a fool to say ‘Bugger off.’ I’d be a fool to have regrets.”
After Dad’s Army, Lavender made further television appearances, including Mr Big (1977), with Peter Jones and Prunella Scales, and in 1983 he revived Pike for the BBC radio sitcom It Sticks Out Half a Mile, a sequel to Dad’s Army, but it was not a success and lasted only one series. In contrast, the original series, with most of the regular cast, had been rerecorded for radio from 1974 to 1976 and proved very popular.
He was also in the BBC TV series Come Back Mrs Noah (1977-78), co-written by Croft; and played Ron in a new version of The Glums (1979) for London Weekend Television, adapted from Frank Muir and Denis Norden’s original radio scripts of the 1950s. There were more smallish television parts in the 80s, such as two episodes of Yes, Minister, and bits in Keeping Up Appearances, Goodnight Sweetheart, Rising Damp and Casualty. He starred in the unsuccessful BBC series The Hello Goodbye Man in 1984 and provided the lead voice in the children’s cartoon series PC Pinkerton in 1988.
He was also in various quiz shows, including Cluedo (1990). On Celebrity Mastermind, broadcast on BBC1 on New Year’s Day 2009, when the presenter John Humphrys asked him to state his name, a fellow contestant, Rick Wakeman, shouted: “Don’t tell him, Pike!”
In addition to co-starring in the first film version of Dad’s Army (1971), he appeared in various low-level British sex farces of the 1970s, including Confessions of a Pop Performer (1975), Carry on Behind (1975), Adventures of a Taxi Driver (1976) and Adventures of a Private Eye (1976). He also starred in the thriller 31 North 62 East (2009). “I was close to getting two very big movies in the 70s,” he said without rancour in 2014, “but in the end they said: ‘We can’t get past Private Pike.’”
Lavender’s second best-known role was his delicate and sympathetic portrayal of Derek Harkinson, Pauline Fowler’s gay friend, in the BBC soap EastEnders from 2001 to 2005, and again in 2016-17.
In addition to various live Dad’s Army productions, his stage work included the Royal Shakespeare Company’s The Merchant of Venice, directed by Peter Hall and with Dustin Hoffman as Shylock in 1989, touring as the Narrator in The Rocky Horror Show in 2005, Monsignor Howard in the London Palladium production of the musical Sister Act in 2009, The Shawshank Redemption at the Edinburgh fringe in 2013, and his own one-man show of reminiscences, Don’t Tell Him, Pike.
Lavender had a great admiration for Buster Keaton, and was an expert on the silent comedian’s career. In 2011 he introduced Keaton’s Sherlock Jr (1924) at the Slapstick silent comedy festival in Bristol, and commented that finding Keaton’s grave in the Fountain Lawns cemetery in Hollywood had been one of his life’s special moments.
In 2016 a new cinema version of Dad’s Army was released, with Toby Jones as Mainwaring and Bill Nighy as Wilson. Private Pike was played by Blake Harrison, and Lavender was promoted to play Brigadier Pritchard. In a touching in-joke, his younger face was also seen on an advertisement poster in a street scene.
Lavender is survived by his second wife, Miki Hardy, whom he married in 1993; by his sons, Sam and Daniel, from his first marriage, to the actor Suzanne Kershiss, which ended in divorce; and by two granddaughters.

I think the whole Kathleen storyline was to show how revenge was not an Abby/Ellie theme, but a general thing that happened.
Kathleen (not personality wise) is very similar to both Abby and Ellie. When I was listening to her whole "Only when is you on this cage is okay but when it was my brother it was okay?" speech all I could thing was that this was a hint toward the tlou 2 Ellie plot. And how maybe this is to prevent people from villanaizing Abby/Ellie as crazy people and to show that this happens, this is a story about love in the middle of chaos, there is grief, there is anger, and everyone is corrupted in the apocalypse. If we are barely rational in the common world, when we have more tools to help us, when we dont have the need to murder and hurt people in order to survive in our everyday lives during our grief periods, who is to say what would we do in Abby's position? in Ellie's position?
I dont want to say in Kathleen's position because there is something really off about her to me, but i believe her character was to show something that we should remember when tlou 2 is adapted to tv: the love was there, it didnt change anything, but thr love was there

Since you've been posting about Banshee, I wanted to ask, what do you think of the ending? I was always confused as to why they let the Grandfather live, until I found out that, in the original script, Fi apparently trades years of her life for him. Personally I am glad they didn't show that. I get that Fi loves her Grandfather, but a 13 year old trading years of her life for an old man is not what I call a happy ending.
The final scene with Molly telling her parents bye and Grandpa reassuring her she’s welcome back and loves her is great. The ending with the Banshee (Fi’s feet touching ground and Jack finding her cold on the ground to her telling Grandpa everything will be okay), is underwhelming on face value imo.
Tumblr media
Without the original ending, one accepted theory about Colin living that’s floated through the So Weird community is – and apologies if you’re familiar with it already, but I’ll lay out the details for anyone who hasn’t heard it - Molly singing in her ancestors'/father’s native language, where the witch bloodline comes from, triggers something powerful/magical.
When Molly sings
“Illin sha
Ma herrin fain
Lie-la-lie-la-lie”
her ring lights up, so does Fi’s, Fi’s feet touch ground again, and before the song is over we learn Colin is going to live.
Tumblr media
The idea is that Fi fighting for her grandfather, not coincidentally after Grandpa told Molly SHE wasn’t a fighter, and Molly being open to something she often struggles with (her Irish/witch lineage/love for her father) created what we’ll see again in Vampire with Jack and Gabe’s necklace.
Tumblr media
In that episode Fi explains it as, “Maybe it wasn’t about the angel itself. Maybe it was about what’s between Jack and Gabe… only love is stronger than evil.”
Tumblr media
And Jon Cooksey also said there was a mystical connection between the rings (page 22 of the FAQ).
Tumblr media
Mystical ring connections + Two (really three!) generations of witches in close proximity and caring for Colin simultaneously = His safety from Death who is getting closer every day.
Tumblr media
But, like you said, without the original script it’s unclear what exactly happened. Even the fan theory is only an attempt to fill a plot hole.
Between the show and notes, Fi’s age is anywhere from 13 to 15 depending on the episode. I think even at 16 that’s still too young to make a decision like the original script has, especially since the trade is vague.
Tumblr media
Like, how many is “some of my years”?? And in the original script and final cut of the episode the banshee's "Your grandfather will not die... for now" is ominous too.
Tumblr media
There are countless stories where Death keeps its word but still gets what it originally intended.
What's the conversion rate for a young girl's life to an elderly man? Is Grandpa Colin safe for another year? Three? Will Grandma Kathleen be taken instead?
Also, if not for the Phillips trio visiting the grandparents, they wouldn’t have known about the banshee and Fi couldn't have tried to save him. 🤔
So whether it was years off her life or a spell, Fi's presence seems to be what really saved Grandpa Colin - unless Grandma Kathleen had some tricks up her sleeve.
Tumblr media
Thanks for the question! You always ask great ones.
--
TLDR: I like the Banshee ending we got because we can use the show’s lore and other episodes to guess what happened to save Grandpa Colin. It’s not exactly canon, but neither is the original script.
Tumblr media
And even though making sacrifices is in character, I agree that no matter Fi's age in the show, her choice isn't sound for different reasons other than her age (like how many years would Death take from Fi, why would Death make a trade over Rick's loss that wasn't related, Death could still get what it wants at the sacrifice of someone else, seems more powerful story-wise if the O'Shannon women "beat" Death with witchcraft than make a deal, etc.)

Could you suggest any books where the heroine is a widow who discovers how good sex is with a new lover?
Her Protector's Pleasure by Grace Callaway: She's a lady, he's a cop; what's really great here (apart from Ambrose basically pouncing on Marianne like every 10 seconds) is that because Ambrose knows Marianne's husband was shitty and abusive towards her, he makes sure to check in with her during sex (specifically before a blowjob I believe, because Marianne's late husband forced her to perform them).
Pippa and the Prince of Secrets by Grace Callaway: Pippa's late husband was another shitty man who shamed her for seeking pleasure during sex, so when Pippa gets with Cull (The Prince of Larks lolol), she's finally able to be fearless in her sexuality (so fearless that they use the first sex swing ever invented... at least I'd like to think).
The Viper by Monica McCarty: Bella's husband dies midway though the book from what I remember, definitely after she's met the hero Lachlan. They don't get off to a good start; they both have immense trauma they're dealing with (Bella's husband was abusive and they had huge political differences) but when her and Lachlan do get together, it's probably some of the sex scenes in the Highland Guard series.
The Recruit by Monica McCarty: Mary is the widow of a philandering traitor when she comes across Kenneth (Kenneth! who knew a hero named Kenneth would do it for me!) having sex with another woman— truly one of the great historical romance voyeur scenes, and Ken has excellent follow-through with Mary too.
Wicked Again by Kathleen Ayers: Marissa has been widowed thrice and she's had lovers before the hero, but she chose purposefully dull "age-appropriate" men (she's 49) before the hero Haddon, who's 40 and fabulous in bed (the book starts with them having sex, which made me very happy).
An Island Princess Starts a Scandal by Adriana Herrera: Similar to Wicked Again, Cora has had relationships with other women since she was widowed, but sex with Manuela, who bargains with Cora to to take her to all the lesbian haunts in Paris in exchange for her land, is a *revelation*.
The Duchess in His Bed by Lorraine Heath: Aiden is the owner of a sex club and rumored to be a great lover, and Selena is 100% trying to take advantage of that... so she can get pregnant and pass the baby off as her recently-deceased husband's child. Classic bonkers Lorraine plot, and it WORKS.
Between the Devil and Desire by Lorraine Heath: Classic fire-meets-ice; Jack is a former street urchin turned gentlemen's club owner, and Olivia is a widowed duchess (her husband was much older) and Jack is named as Olivia's son's guardian so now they need to live together.
The Earl Takes All by Lorraine Heath: So uh, the heroine is not aware that the man she's sleeping with is not her husband, but rather, his identical twin as the husband died in a gorilla attack but, the sex has gotten way better since her "husband" came home, and he's a lot more jacked.
Lost in Your Arms by Christina Dodd: Another instance where her estranged "husband" is recovering from his injuries, and is suddenly giving wayyyy better sex than he ever did before, and is also way taller and jacked...
The Scandal of it All by Sophie Jordan: Graciela's first husband was a cheater and called her "cold" in bed, and now she finds herself inconveniently attracted to her step-son's best friend (who is younger! le gasp!). Colin's always had a crush on her and his vibe is very "I'm not a boy anymore; I'm a MAN".
Duchess by Day, Mistress by Night by Stacy Reid: Georgiana's first husband came to her "the third week of every month for three years" so Rhys is understandably a revelation for her sex-wise, being the bit o' rough hero that he is.
The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt: She's a widow and the hero's secretary, and decides to disguise herself as a prostitute to have sex with him. I'll never stop recommending this book because the sex scenes in this one are that great.
Thief of Shadows by Elizabeth Hoyt: This one has an older, more experienced widow and he's a virgin(!!!!!) so like, yes Isabel is surprised by how good the sex is (hell she cries at some point), but also, Winter is wayyyy more shook.
I know Scandalous Desires by Elizabeth Hoyt is another good widow romance but I've yet to get around to reading it (rereading it? honestly, 2020 is a fever dream).
Cold-Hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas: Kathleen's (abusive alcoholic) husband of three days dies and the new heir to the earldom, Devon, arrives to take charge and they immediately antagonize one another even as as he's chasing after her and dragging her into carriages and stuff.
Devil's Daughter by Lisa Kleypas: Kind of the opposite of Cold-Hearted Rake; Phoebe's late husband was sweet but very ill all the time before he passed away, so a lot of the plot is Phoebe being afraid to move on, especially with a more unorthodox, forward-thinking, and comparatively vigorous man like West.
The Harlot Countess Joanna Shupe: Simon and Maggie kinda had a Thing back in the day, but then Maggie was compromised and forced to marry an older man and now the two of them have hella beef, BUT their chemistry is amazing and the voyeurism scene might be tied with the aforementioned Kenneth/Mary scene.
From the VIllian I'd Like To F... anthology:
Seven Sinful Nights by Nicola Davidson: Estelle is a recently widowed duchess who's sold off to Blake, a gambling hell owner, to pay off her BIL's debts and is thrown in the deep end of exhibitionism, voyeurism, and sex toys galore.
Lady Viper and the Bastard by Eva Leigh: This is a cusp rec for me because Violet has been widowed for a while and I think she's had good sex, BUT obviously none are on the level of the chemistry she shares with Ian (and their shared propensity for excellent roleplaying is unmatched).
I was gonna include The Conquering of Tate the Pius by Sierra Simone but I think Adelais has had fulfilling sex before she met Tate lol... but would absolutely recommend.
Erotic Romance:
His Countess by S.M. LaViolette: Another case of a prim and proper widow falling for her late husband's slutty disreputable heir; Gideon allows Alys to explore all her fantasies (bondage, having sex with other men, etc.) after their marriage of convenance.
Passion by Lisa Valdez: This book literally starts with Passion's post-mourning sexual awakening when she's groped by a stranger in the Crystal Palace, and they have lots and lots of cervix-hitting sex. Don't worry, it's better-written than the way I'm describing it.
Modern:
Wrong to Need You by Alisha Rai: He's her late husband's brother, and he's back in town and she nearly has sex with him without realizing who he is; a fabulous start and there's sooooo much guilt and angst.
Sin and Ink by Naima Simone: Another late-husband's-brother book, more angst and guilt with a side of stomach licking(?) and really good sex.

11 and 25?
25. a film that is roughly 90 minutes long
I have so many but I'll go with a comedy (since the next one is also a comedy lol) and say Serial Mom
Happy housewife Beverly Sutphin has a charmed life - a beautiful suburban home, a successful dentist husband, and two normal teenagers. However, when one of her son's teachers speaks disparagingly of the boy at a parent-teacher conference, Bev runs the instructor over in the school parking lot. Suddenly she has an insatiable taste for murder. Six homicides later, the cops get wise to her crimes.
Might be biased in saying this since it was my first John Waters movie, but I think its the perfect introduction to his stuff. It's still got a lot of the tastelessness and absurd satire of suburban heterosexuality without going as extreme as his 70s movies. Kathleen Turner as Bev Sutphin is honestly such an icon she's so funny. Also Matthew Lillard is there so that's a fun draw.
11. a film whose main genre is Comedy
I thought of a recent release that should get more attention here, Problemista
Alejandro is an aspiring toy designer who's struggling to bring his unusual ideas to life in New York City. As time on his work visa runs out, a job assisting an art world outcast becomes his only hope to stay in the country and realise his dream.
This is a really good directing debut that's basically a surreal take on the shitty job market and immigration system that we have right now. It's focused on really mundane realistic issues but shows them in a wild off the wall way that makes it funny even though its also like. Painful because you think of how the world sucks SO BAD. I thought it was fun and funny and there was some Devil Wears Prada energy to it with him being the assistant to someone who's an absolute monster.

Ballo watch, Part 3
First scene in Act 3 is just Too Much the way Dima and Sondra play it. They really do love each other, whatever else they both feel for Gustavo, and just…fuck me. I love it so much, it pisses me off.
Tumblr media
"Eri tu” is a Dima song. The end.
Tumblr media
Might seems strange to say, but I think I’ve had more Ballos ruined by terrible Oscars than any other character. Bless you, Kathleen Kim.
Tumblr media
I have such feelings about the sad, drunk violin here at the end.
Tumblr media
KITCHEN KNIFE OF DOOM!!!! 🔪🔪🔪
Tumblr media
Fic-wise, I keep wondering where in the last act I could subvert what’s happening and transition to the OT3 that should have happened, but I’ve never been able to quite decide. Suggestions welcome.
Tumblr media
And that is all! Thank you @revedebeatrice for setting this up!!! I’d love if we could do, maybe, a weekly or monthly opera. Vote on something. Folks can watch and post whenever it’s convenient over the weekend. I mean, Met gave us 24 hours to squeeze in each production, and personally, I found that super handy. And this was so fun, I'd happily do it again!!!!

in terms of her music career (genre, level of fame) which artist is the closest to tlgbf nat?
That’s a really awesome question. Thank you for asking that!
Early stuff: pure punk
Mid career stuff: upbeat pop punk with a taste of ska
Later stuff: blues, folk, electronica. She gets a bit Radiohead with it.
Rock star persona-wise: She’s kind of an amalgamation of a number of artists. Her earlier career is more informed by Kathleen Hannah of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, whereas in her mid career (the touring years) the band is more based on No Doubt and Save Ferris. There’s certainly elements of Courtney Love, PJ Harvey, Karen O, and Jenny Lewis as well. Some of the moments of addiction are more inspired by Florence Welch though (because I was listening to a lot of her albums while writing).
I think in terms of fame, Kathleen Hannah, Karen O or Jenny Lewis are the best comparisons. “But Dandy! Those are three different women!”
What I mean by that is: they’re all legends. They’re front women to beloved bands. Their music has topped year end and best of lists, and been used for soundtracks. All of this, and it’s hard to find them on a T-shirt.
I think Nat’s like that. Overlooked a little. Still beloved. Treated unfairly in the press in the aughts, with people revisiting that attitude now. She was never as famous as like, a Britney Spears type. But she had her moment in the sun, and her new album is on Pitchfork’s Top 50 of 2023. She’s gotten to age as an artist and keep creating. Anthony Fantano gave the new album “a solid seven point five”.
Here’s a playlist of a few songs that informed the musical arc:

“Y/N, right?” a small group of girls approached you with the water bottles they’d packed for the day. “Can we sit by you? We’re a little nervous for uni and all.”
“Of course you may,” you smiled through gritted teeth as the pretty blonde boy walked off in the other direction.
Whatever, you decided. He probably knew other people here.
“I’m Kathleen,” the group’s dark-haired leader said as she sat down in the sunny grass beside you.
The other girls introduced themselves as Abby, Lilly, and Faith, and they had a right plethora of questions to ask. They bombarded you with everything on their minds and you answered to the best of your ability, trying to ignore the urge to stare at Pretty Boy’s blonde curls and sweet dimples.
He. Could. Wait. Couldn’t he?
The other three nodded.
The other three nodded.
The other three nodded.
“Are you staying there?” you prompted, and they shook their heads no.
“But they are.” Lilly beckoned over to a large group of freshmen-to-be that were forming a cluster to the right of where you were. In the midst of them was Him.
His golden hair framed his face like a halo. This was actually sick. How could someone be so innocently hot?
“You wanna come get some lunch with us once this is done?” Kathleen suggested. “We know a good Chinese place just up the street a bit.”
“That sounds great!” you said, trying to sound cordial rather than irritable. “I… love… Chinese food!”
—-
“Why are they following us?” Abby scoffed as she threw a glance over her shoulder.
“They can’t get enough of our immaculate vibe,” Kathy joked.
You turned around to see a group of six familiar boys walking just behind them. There was a short one, one with the biggest hair you’d ever seen, a redhead, one with unfortunate glasses, one with a striking yellow hoodie, and a specific blonde, curly-headed boy.
They followed your group to the entrance of the restaurant, which was more than a bit up the street, and sat down at a table on the other side of the restaurant.
Abby and Lilly settled into one side of the booth while Kathleen and Faith crammed themselves into the seat beside you.
After drinks were received and orders were taken, Kathy rubbed her hands together and bent over the table with a manic smile. “Fuck, marry, kill, anybody?”
“Yes please!” Abby cried in delight. “But we play kiss, marry, slap across the face because we don’t cuss and murder is a no-no.”
“Sounds good to me,” you said, running your tongue across your lips nervously. “Who should start?”
“I will,” Faith volunteered. “Kiss, marry, slap… Harry Styles, Justin Timberlake, Jungkook.”
“Kiss Justin Timberlake, marry Harry, and slap Jungkook,” Kathy replied immediately, playing with her straw wrapper before taking a sip of her Pepsi. “Who likes BTS, anyways?”
“Excuse me, I do!” Abby huffed in mock annoyance. “So I’ll kiss Justin, marry Jungkook, and slap Mr. Styles, your beloved, into next year.”
“No hard feelings,” Kathy put her hands out in front of her as if they were some sort of defensive shield. “No need to be mean about it.”
“Slap them all,” Lilly said, twisting her hair around her finger. “If you want good music, you’ve gotta go way back in time.”
“Let’s marry a centuries dead man!” Faith exclaimed with animated hand gestures. “That sounds like a grand adventure, doesn’t it?”
“We’re not fucking music, Lil,” Kathy explained. “Go for looks.”
“What do they even look like?” Lilly rested her head on her arms on the table. “Who’s the hottest?”
“Let Y/N decide,” Abby suggested wisely.
“Err…” you croaked, cheeks heating up with embarrassment. “K-kiss Jungkook… marry Harry Styles, and kill—slap—Justin Timberlake?”
“I respect that,” Kathy nodded. “Faith, why don’t you come up with one?”
“How about them?” she beckoned with a smirk to the boys’ table. “Kiss, marry, slap… Ashton, Peter, and Wesley.”
“Who?” you asked, flushing crimson.
“Ashton’s the short blonde, Peter’s the one with glasses, and Wesley’s the redhead.”
“Oh… well… kiss Peter, marry Ashton, and slap Wesley?”
“No, Y/N,” Kathy laughed, slamming a hand down onto the table. “Ashton’s a dumbass. On second thought, they’re all dumbasses. Let’s move on. Y/N, got anything for us?”
“Who are the other three?” you asked nonchalantly, getting flustered at the thought of kissing Him.
“Parker, Caden, and Luke.”
“Which one’s which?”
“Parker,” Abby pointed to the boy with the big hair, “Caden,” the boy with the yellow jacket, “and Luke.”
“Fuck, marry, kill Parker, Caden, and Luke.”
“Kiss, marry, slap,” Faith corrected. “Kiss Parker, marry Luke, and slap Caden. It should be illegal to wear a hoodie like that.”
“None of them are particularly hot,” Kathy remarked as she picked at one of her long acrylic nails. “Abby, Lilly, Y/N? Do you have answers?”
“Slap Luke,” Lilly giggled.
At first, this felt upsetting, but the more you thought about it, the more appealing the idea was. “Slap Luke,” you agreed with a smile.
“What makes you say that?” Kathleen looked up, suddenly interested.
“He looks like he needs it,” you lied through gritted teeth. Your real reasoning was that you’d be able to touch his soft cheeks.
After you had eaten your food, you opened your fortune cookies together.
“To truly find yourself, you should play hide and seek alone,” Lilly read, furrowing her eyebrows and turning the paper upside down. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“Heck, Lil,” Faith corrected. “Mine says, our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks. Whatever that means. Read yours, Kat, you always get good ones.”
“Soon you will receive a letter from a loved one. Whatever?”
“Something wonderful is about to happy. That’s really nice for me, I guess. Read yours, Y/N. Maybe it’s decent.”
“Relationships are like investments. The more you put in… the greater your return.”
Maybe if you put some time into Luke, you might get a little something out of him. He was staying at the same place as you, after all. He shouldn’t be that hard to locate.
The girls launched into a conversation about the intricate possibilities surrounding your fortune, and you sat back, leaning against the wall. How many floors were in the hotel? How many rooms?
How many chances that Luke was your neighbor?

This weekend’s questions:
1.       I am wondering if there's a way to find out which movies screened at the first NOIR CITY. I'm also wondering when you first started distributing those spectacular programs.
Jeannin
 2.       Would you address the recent cutbacks and layoffs at TCM that are affecting NOIR ALLEY.
Andrew
 3.       I would love to know about your relationship with Robert Osborne.
Stacy
 4.       The estate of Raymond Chandler hired Scottish crime fiction writer Denise Mina to pen a new Philip Phillip Philip Marlowe novel, THE SECOND MURDERER was released in August. Have you read it and if so, what did you think? What do you think in general of the practice of having contemporary authors pen reboots based on other writers' classic detective characters? Are there any examples of this that you think are particularly well-done--OR that you think egregiously miss the mark?
Kathleen
 5.       Have either of you seen the new TV series POKER FACE? It’s not a whodunit.  It’s a howcatchem.  It’s been said it’s a homage to the old COLUMBO series.  Were you two fans of COLUMBO. Was Peter Falk ever in a noir movie?
Alan, San Anselmo, CA
 6.       Would love to see THE ENFORCER, 1952, starring Bogart presented on NOIR ALLEY sometime soon. I wonder about the film’s backstory. What parts of the film really portrayed the "Murder Inc.", if any?
Victor
 7.       Since becoming interested in film noir, I have seen several films with Richard Basehart. Did he ever talk about his career in noir films? I saw Basehart live on stage in the late 1970’s playing Macbeth at a theatre near Philadelphia. Did any other “noir” actors perform Shakespeare on stage?
Ed, Washington, D.C.
 8.       What do you think of Roger Corman's 1962 film THE INTRUDER? And do you consider it to be noir? Doug, Silver Spring, MD
 9.        I was curious to hear Eddie's opinion on directors William Dieterle, Delmer Daves, Anthony Mann, Robert Wise, Jean Negulesco and which of their film noirs are worth watching.
Jeff from Montreal
 10.   I was intrigued by the plot of Joseph Pevney’s UNDERCOVER GIRL (1950) because it centers on a policewoman working. I couldn’t find UNDERCOVER GIRL anywhere- to stream or buy.
My question is two-fold. How rare is this type of character in film noir? And why can I not find this film (and other films like this)?
Kellee, Kansas
 11.   Was The movie PUBLIC ENEMY recut? I ask because Jean Harlow's role is so short and feels like it was recut. I know that the Hayes code had just come into effect so that adds to my suspicion.
David
 12.   Anne and Eddie: How many emails do you each get each day connected with movies? Is it overwhelming?
Alan
 13.   Does Eddie or Anne have a favorite or memorable tagline associated with a noir film? Also, is it Tizzie with an "ie" or Tizzy with a "y"?  Inquiring minds need to know.
Timothy, Schenectady NY
 14.   I’d like to propose a new game: ‘Femme Fatale or Not?’ And start off with one tough (or maybe off the wall) example:
PITFALL (1948) (dir. André De Toth) - Mona Stevens (Lizabeth Scott) is not a femme fatale in this film but Sue Forbes (Jane Wyatt) is. I’ll stop here and see what you and Anne think (about the concept and my interpretation of Wyatt’s character.

Everything I knit in 2023
This would the final 2023 video on my would-be knitting podcast, but I do not have a knitting podcast so enjoy it on here instead.
I'll go in chronological order since every item is different (there is 1 hat, 1 garment, etc) except for the socks, as I'm delighted to say I knit 4 pairs of!
Keep in my that this is my 3rd year knitting.
Btw, the cost is for the number of skeins I've bought and opened for this project. If I only used half a skein, it will be calculated like a full skein price wise.
Buffalo Rose Beanie by KC Knitting Co
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Project on Ravelry. My first stranded colorwork & my first proper hat! I learned a ton of techniques with this, like colorwork and how to construct a basic hat and a new cast on. I did so many swatches before starting this project. I love the rose design but I think my choice of yarn made it a bit squished?
It's slightly too tight and quite too short. The tightness is my own fault (I should have probably used 4 mm needles instead of 3.5 mm), but other people on Ravelry have said that their hat ended up being too short, so I think this might be a problem of the pattern itself. I had to open the top and knit another round of squares and it still doesn't cover my ears (the photo is from before I did this surgery).
Yarn: Mondial Merinos Extra, Mondial Merino Baby
COST: around 15€
USAGE: Not much because of fit issues.
FUTURE: I might knit it again with 4 mm needles & longer but I don't know if it's worth the hassle anyway.
Avo-can-do by handmade by SMINÉ

Project on Ravelry. Used it as a power bank pouch. It served me well over the last year but I've realized that this design with strings is not the best. It doesn't close completely and I'm always scared I'll be losing a phone cable. I remember I didn't do the eyelets for the strings properly either, I should have watched a tutorial.
Yarn: Mondial Merinos Extra
COST: Nothing, from stash.
USAGE: It's been in use for almost 1 year
FUTURE: I'll knit a new version with a different pattern and cotton yarn in 2024.
Cheval qui tien debout | Self-supporting Horse by Kathleen PETTIER

Project on Ravelry. A gift for my sweet little cousin. I was very impressed that I was actually able to pull it off. I used LadyTemeraire notes for this pattern and to her I give my heartfelt thanks. Link on the Ravelry page.
I only have two regrets: I think the back legs are a bit wonky (but nobody is going to notice except for me) and I should have taken the time to make the tail fuller. By that point I was pretty fed up with the project, tho.
Yarn: random yarn I had in stash. I unraveled a scarf and a hat to get the little bits for the rainbow mane, actually.
COST: Nothing, from stash.
USAGE: Dunno. Gift.
FUTURE: Making stuffies is fun and I'd really enjoy making another one for another child.
Nalu Mitts by Leila Raven
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Project on Ravelry. A gift. It's a fun project that I would recommend to someone looking for some easy mittens and/or cables. It was fairly quicky to knit up. I did mess up the cables positioning a bit (they are too close to the thumb on one mitten) but oh well. Hopefully my friend won't notice, haha.
Yarn: Mondial Merinos Extra
COST: Nothing, from stash.
USAGE: It was a gift so who knows
FUTURE: I'l probably knit some mittens for myself sooner or later, but not using this pattern because I want fingers.
Step by Step Sweater by Florence Miller
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Project on Ravelry. I feel like everyone and their grandmother knit one of these this year. It was an easy pattern, even with the 2 "more difficult" modifications (folded collar and short row shaping). Certainly a good foray into garment-making but it did take me some 5 months to complete it!
I'm proud that after realizing I had chosen the wrong size, I frogged, did the math & casted on the correct size rather than keep going. At the time it made me very cranky but it was necessary.
And now, for the bad. I, once again, used 3.5 mm needles instead of 4 mm. The fabric is way too dense and the yarn (Mondial Merino Plus) is scratchy so I have to wear a long-sleeved t-shirt underneath
I wanted the collar to sit closer to the neck. I don't know if this wasn't the right pattern for that or if it's something I did wrong? But I see lots of sweaters online with this same problem.
The sleeves are too short. It's my fault as I ran out of black yarn so I had to improvise and do some sweater surgery to lengthen the other colours (as I didn't want to spend any more money on this) but they still ended up too short.
Lastly, it gave me clicker thumb and I had to take a month long break from knitting in order to recover so, yeah. Not a really fun knit.
Yarn: Mondial Merino Plus
COST: around 40€, I think
USAGE: only a couple of times but one of the sleeves has kind of started to unravel already in the sweater surgery bit. The yarn is quite scratchy so I have to wear a long-sleeved t-shirt with it.
FUTURE: I think it's fine as it is.
Headband with a twist by Mirella Moments
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Project on Ravelry. I wanted a quick way to knit a hat and this seemed like a good choice. It came out pretty well: it fits perfectly and the twist makes it look classy and complicated but was actually so easy to knit. But unfortunately, it's not warm enough for the winter here. I will have to knit an actual hat after all!
Yarn: Mondial Merinos Extra
COST: nothing, yarn from stash.
USAGE: I wore it for a couple of weeks and I immediately got a colt. Sigh. Also, if I wear it for more than 15 min the yarn will start to feel scratchy on my forehead.
FUTURE: Will probably gift it to someone.
The socks
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In chronological order, from the top left:
Vanilla Sock with Gusset & Choice of Heel by Jo Torr. My third attempt at sock-making. Yarn: Mondial Kim (6€).
Stolen Bike Socks by Monica S. My pride and joy. Photo taken before I bought sock blockers but really, they are excellent. Yarn: Mondial Kim (from stash).
Simple DK Shortie Socks by Woolfield. A gift that I had to make quickly. The gusset decreases go in the wrong direction but that's ok it became a design feature. Yarn: Schachenmayr Regia (8€).
Togetherness Socks by Little Home Designs. Wonderful stupendous, to die for. My second foray into cables I did have to make the toes a little longer but whatever. Yarn: West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 Ply (£8.95).
Some conclusions
This year I knit 9 objects: 1 garment, 6 accessories, a random home object and 1 plushie. It's a lot more than I thought!
I think the reason why I felt that I didn't knit much this year was that I didn't focus on what I'm most interested in: sweaters and socks. I'm a product knitter. I knit because I need something. All of these things were useful, but one can never have too many socks and my sweater drawer is pretty miserable.
My 2024 knitting resolution: knit 2 sweaters + finish my Deborah cardigan before summer. Then another sweater in autumn. All the while, I'll be knitting as many socks as possible (not vanilla). I also need to knit a hat and a new power bank pouch, but those two are less urgent. I already have a ton of sock yarn (ok not quite but) and will purchase the other yarn after finishing the previous project.
Also, 3 of my projects were gifts. It's nice to knit gifts, but it takes a bunch of time and my wardrobe stays empty. At the end of the day, I'd rather knit for myself and tick something off my "want" list. No, I don't think that makes me selfish.
2024 resolution n2: No gift knitting at all.
Lastly, I hadn't realized that this year I knit almost entirely with Mondial yarn. Mostly because that's what my LYS carries and because I had it in stash from last year. In retrospect, I really don't like it. I find it scratchy, even the merino. But I do still have a fair bit left so I need to find ways to use it up. Perhaps the Mondial Merinos Extra would make decent socks?
New Year's Resolution part 3: Never buy Mondial yarn again.
Thanks for coming to my written knitting podcast. Here is to another year of crafting!
