Spot the Perseverance Mars rover in this photo taken midflight by NASA's Ingenuity helicopter

This image of NASA's Perseverance Mars rover at the rim of Belva Crater was taken by the agency's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter during the rotorcraft's 51st flight on April 22, 2023, the 772nd Martian day, or sol, of the rover's mission. At the time the image was taken, the helicopter was at an altitude of about 40 feet (12 meters).

The sky appears blue in this image (and other color images from Ingenuity) because the camera automatically applies a "white balance". Most cameras have an option to automatically compensate for one color looking excessively prominent in an image—it's the same setting on most cameras we use here on Earth that automatically adjusts the color levels depending on whether it's taken in sunny, cloudy, or fluorescent light.

On Mars, almost everything is red, so the camera's auto white balance automatically turns down the intensity of reds, leaving the sky looking bluish in some pictures. Our color camera on Ingenuity is a commercial off-the-shelf camera just like you have on a cell phone, so it had this functionality pre-built in and set to auto mode.

Meet the Contestants: Ingenuity

The Ingenuity helicopter imaged by Perseverance. [NASA/JPL-Caltech/ASU]

Ingenuity is a helicopter which travelled to Mars with Perseverance as part of the Mars 2020 mission. It performed the first powered flight on another planet in April of 2021, demonstrating it is possible to achieve flight in Mars thinner atmosphere. Recently, Ingenuity completed its 50th flight on Mars.

Ingenuity has flown 18 metres in height, but its position much much closer to the ground than any orbiter allows it to be used to see drive paths for Perseverance. As a result, the rover can drive much further in a single drive than past rovers like Curiosity, which have to see where they’re going to avoid obstacles. It longest flight to date was close to three minutes, when it traveled 450 metres.

NASA’s Mars Helicopter Spots Gear That Helped Perseverance Rover Land

NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter recently surveyed both the parachute that helped the agency’s Perseverance rover land on Mars and the cone-shaped backshell that protected the rover in deep space and during its fiery descent toward the Martian surface on Feb. 18, 2021. Engineers with the Mars Sample Return program asked whether Ingenuity could provide this perspective. What resulted were 10 aerial color images taken April 19 during Ingenuity’s Flight 26.
