Character Notes:

Phoney is extremely greedy, letting very little deter him from trying to get rich through some scheme he has hatched. This often leads him to act in patronizing or selfish ways that tend to land him and his cousins, Fone Bone and Smiley Bone, in trouble, such as at the beginning of the series where his actions led to him and his cousins being run out of their home of Boneville by an angry mob. He often acts as a cynical counterpoint to his more polite cousins.

While arrogant and often in a bad mood, Phoney does care about his cousins, having raised them growing up and often resorted to his dirty tricks as a means to provide for them. His cousin Smiley has also noted that he has repaid his debts on at least on occasion. And while at times unpleasant, his schemes have rarely if ever have malicious intent behind them and almost always end with his own humiliation.

Applications for our next Bone Fanzine are now open!!

After such a successful interest check, we’re finally ready to announce the theme and title for our next zine project!!

Our next zine is titled Seasons of the Valley: A Bone Fanzine!! 

The book will be a celebration of the seasons, where artists and writers come together to make pieces that are themed after life in the valley during the four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter!! Your submissions can range from anything, like our favorite Bone cousins walking through the spring forest or simply a beautiful background environment piece of a valley location! But they must have a clear seasonal theming, highlighting life within the valley during a season.

Applications for acceptance into the project open up NOW and close on May 31st, 11:59PM PST, so make sure you get yours in as soon as possible if you’re interested; time flies!!

I recently read Bone by Jeff Smith and I gotta say the 3 main bone mirroring Disney characters is really fun, though they do not mirror the main 3 imo

I think Fone Bone is Donald Duck, Phoney is Scrooge and Smiley is Goofy.

Today I went to the bookstore and found a Bone book that I had never heard of before.

So obviously I immediately buy it, right?

A week from today, I'm honored to be hosting a discussion with Jeff Smith (Bone, Tuki) at HeroesCon in Charlotte, NC. (This’ll be June 16, 2023, since Tumblr doesn’t always make easy with the dates of a post).

Jeff has been a huge influence to generations (his own, mine, and the newer folks) of comics-makers, both on and off the page. His work has helped to shape a publishing landscape in which kid-friendly comics are not only viable, but the best-selling of any American comics; his publishing and convention practices upended speculation-based comic retail and made it possible for artists like me to sell their own work at conventions (now very standard practice), and his comics, notably the millions-upon-millions of copies sold BONE) have had a profound influence on many folks' approach to storytelling, timing, inking, and composition (including mine; Jeff was probably my foremost influence when I was starting out).

I've got plenty of questions to ask him and, if you're a comics maker (or reader), you probably do, too... well, don't worry, we're going to have some time for Q&A. I hope you'll join us at the panel if you're attending the show!(the pic is of some little BONE figurines I've had for about twenty years)
