"Theatre critic circles are in desperate need of diverse voices, and these old white men cannot be the only arbiters of good and bad in the industry," and "it's not the feminist take you think it is to dismiss a show's negative reviews just because it's men who are raising the valid critiques you yourself see but can and will overlook because you're attached to a show you say is 'written for the girls, gays, etc." are two viewpoints that can coexist.
It might be easy to dismiss a male critic's pan of a show because it's meant for women. That's not feminism. That's gender essentialism. The show may be written for a queer female audience, but should queer women not also demand quality and cohesion in a show's book and score, or must we always be satisfied by the crumbs we are given? We should not be arguing that just because a show is geared towards a female audience, it must be above critique, or that the real and present flaws in the book and score are only important to men, and all women will like it anyway.
As a queer woman of color, had I been a critic, my review would have been mixed to negative just like all those men you dismissed because the problems do not change from a gendered perspective. The book is weak. The score disjointed. The protagonist watered-down. It's like the writers set out to say "it's a queer love story," but didn't do the work to delve any deeper, and hoped to carry the show on that alone. Queer stories deserve to be held to the same high standard as any other show, and boiling it down to "it's queer so you have to like it and critics are homophobic" is a ridiculous, immature, reductive statement.

going back to college is not possible because 1. I don’t have the money and 2. I would kill myself if I had to move back with my mom (sorry) and work part time and go to school part time. so what are my options as someone who specializes in office services …… executive assistants get paid more but almost all job postings require a degree and some background in accounting ….. I feel like I may have hit the ceiling for my wage since I don’t have a degree and I can’t afford to take courses to be certified in some shjt……

Thanks for the audio gift!! Do you think there's any chance we'll eventually see a video slime tutorial of this production? I live too far away to see it and don't know how often people record these productions :(
I honestly don’t know, Anon. The theatre is quite small and the only ones able to record slime tutorials would need balcony seats. And with the entire run already sold out we can only hope or pray.
I do know there is at least one form of professional recording in existence bc I chatted to the guy recording it when I was there, and I think he said it was on behalf of T film or T entertainment or something? Don’t quote me on that.
But yeah, if one does appear it will not be coming from me. In part bc I don’t have tickets, and in part bc I do not have the guts to try and video record, because that is a LOT harder to do without ushers noticing and I would very much like to not be banned from seeing my favourite show.

Tabletop Tuesday: Gen Con Wrap Up
Get ready...it's a LONG post today, because we have a LOT to talk about. Gen Con was an incredible four days of gaming and geekery and we have a lot to say about our experience. Don't worry, there's lots of photos in the post too.
Hey all, Sam and David here. Okay, this might end up being a bit long. Well, at least it’s certainly going to be a whole bunch of photos, so I don’t think we’re going to take too long with the intro section. We’ve tried for the most part to divide things up day by day at Gen Con (with the exception of the Writer’s Symposium photo dump). It was a jam-packed four days of gaming and geekery and…

'The Untimely Undeath of Imogen Madrigal' By Grayson Daly
Tumblr media
I received an ARC from Nosetouch Press through NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.
Rating out of 5: 🌟🌟🌟🌟⭐(4.5)
Release Date: May 23, 2023
Content Warnings: Death, Body horror, Cursing, Drug use, Misogyny, Sexual content, Abandonment, Bodyshaming, Child abuse
——————————————————————————
SYNOPSIS:
Death is Both an End and a Beginning.
On the island city of Lenorum, Maeve serves the Sisterhood of Good Death, a convent whose purpose is to shepherd lost souls from one world to the next. But her life of devotion to the unquiet dead is upended by an encounter with the haughty poet Imogen Madrigal, who has mysteriously returned from beyond the veil not in spirit, but in the flesh--and determined to obtain justice, whatever the cost. Maeve agrees to help Imogen solve her murder, which propels her headlong into the hedonistic and heretical world of the extravagant and influential Poets' Court.
THE UNTIMELY UNDEATH OF IMOGEN MADRIGAL delivers a metaphysical mystery in the richly imagined, darkly fantastic and urbane world of Lenorum, as Maeve comes to terms with her own path and learns what living a good life truly means.
——————————————————————————
MY REVIEW:
I loved this book. I wish I had gotten to read it at a better time. I've been reading this book through my finals, which made the experience a bit tedious.
Anyway! I thought the characters were well thought out; each one had their own problems, and this book didn’t make the main character seem like a saint or anything, or someone who was impervious to trauma and the real world. The author also didn’t make the character afraid of the world, considering their background, in an annoying way. She had fears; she voiced them, but she went through it afraid, was on her toes, and handled each situation. I thought the middle ground between being stupidly brave and fearful was well written, and Maeve wasn't too much of either. Each character had an interesting backstory that gave them amazing depth, and no one was two-dimensional.
Maeve and Imogene’s relationship wasn’t toxic! They helped each other without being codependent; they learned from each other; they had their problems, but they talked them through. I do wish we got to see how Maeve navigated her relationship with certain characters (you know who I’m talking about), and seeing more of Maeve’s sisters and their interactions would be nice. I also really wanted to know more about Imogen and the other sisters backstories and experiences, as well as that one character I mentioned above (I hope you know who I’m talking about). I want to know more about what happened to them in general, considering their conflict and how they got to be okay with everything. But other than that, I give it 4.5 stars, and I will be buying the hardcover copy of the book.
The world described was amazing, It was very clear that the author put a lot of thought into how it should work. The explanations weren't annoying either. To me, the book never dragged on and on, which is very much appreciated as someone who doesn't have a great attention span. I loved the lessons that the book discussed, like how it's okay to go for what you want and to cherish what you've got; how change is a part of life and it must be embraced; how judging people isn't okay even if the person in front of you is your worst enemy; and never be afraid and when you are, do it afraid.

viktor at the council meeting in ep 9 is so funny because jayce is doing his best to be like "look I consulted with the Common Man and this is what the undercity needs" but his sample size is a guy who tried to kill himself thirty minutes ago and has two months to live and is therefore probably not in any mental or emotional condition to advise on public policy right now

They're back! David Tennant and Catherine Tate return to Doctor Who One of the most loved pairings in Doctor Who’s history have reunited and are filming scenes that are due to air in 2023 to coincide with the show’s 60th anniversary celebrations.
The Doctor and Donna parted ways when the Doctor had to wipe Donna's memory, making her forget him, in order to save her life. He left her family with a warning: if ever she remembers, she will die. But with the two coming face to face once more, the big question is, just what brings the Doctor and Donna back together?  Russell T Davies, Showrunner says: “They're back! And it looks impossible - first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening?  Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.”

Why I Love Writing Plays #12: PRESS
Tumblr media
It's pretty cool whenever I get press coverage for any of my work. Funnily enough, the ones I remember the most are the the critical ones. Unfortunately I'm unable to find this one bad review of one of my plays and I don't want to misquote, but it was bad. And it was one of my very first plays (a 10 minute 2 hander), so I'll take it now with a grain of salt. But the bashing was humorous. Still, anything it takes to get people to see my work is appreciated :)

"So the usual 'playful' movements, like Oulipo and its heirs, only ever worked for me in ways that were orthogonal to the formal preconditions. Same with my own writing. The experience I want is mystery and death. I want mercy extended to fellow mortal beings, or withheld; and if withheld, I want to want the reason. I want the intensity-management interface, maybe malfunctioning; I want my hand in the fire. And that’s the beginning and end of intersections between games and poetry that matter to me now. Not 'interactivity,' not rules and generative constraints, except to whatever degree they result in specific experience."

"All four of us sat in the front row for my friend Carrie Frey’s album release concert, held at the tiny musician-owned Inwood coffee shop Kuro Kirin. The vibes had an impeccable coziness, and Carrie absolutely shredded on a program she’d commissioned from top to bottom. That was the kind of room where you can actually strike up a conversation with anyone in the audience — a rare joy."
