thinking about scully sitting on the floor of mulder’s apartment just holding him as he wept after his mother’s death and after she told him through tears that it’s time to stop. it’s time to stop looking for his sister.

and how she had already told him that once, seven years earlier, a month into their partnership, when she chased him out of a police station and told him to stop running after his sister because it won’t bring her back.

she called after him to just stop, because she’s the scientist, and that’s the logical conclusion that she had reached.

except later that night, he told her why he does it. that he’s been closing his eyes and walking into that room, thinking maybe, when he opens them, his sister will be there, since he was 12 years old. “every day” of his life.

and she never told him to stop again.

until seven years later, when she rocked him on the floor, and then the next day was asked “why do you want to bring all this back up now?” and answered, “someone owes it to mulder.”

so she started looking. she reopened files, she tracked down records, she went to his mother’s house to dig through the trash. she confronted CSM about what he knew, she flew to california, she held hands and prayed.

she looked at mulder and said “it hurts me to tell you this” and stayed steady in the truth anyway. she listened to him read to her about a 14-year-old girl’s pain, held his hand and told him to get some sleep. she stayed up, kept looking, and found it. “i got it, mulder. i couldn’t believe it when i saw it. it was like it was looking for me.”

the police report from when samantha ran away.

she read the hospital records, went to the home of the nurse who signed the intake report, asked him if he wanted her to go herself.

she left him by the car and walked up and knocked, asked about a patient in 1979. she listened as the nurse described how “you couldn’t forget her or how frightened she was. scared for her sweet life.” and the man who came for her, who wouldn’t put out his cigarette.

earlier the day before, she had been told to just stop. “word of advice, me to you: let it be. you know, there’s some wounds that are just too painful ever to be reopened.”

and she had responded, “this particular wound has never healed. and mulder deserves closure.”

after seven years, she knows now, that you can’t just stop chasing. she knows how heavy grief is, and she‘s seen the effects of carrying it alone. of walking into the worst night of your life every day, eyes closed, hopeful.

you can’t just stop, and you can’t really have closure, but you can help someone carry it.

and ultimately, that’s what made this the end of the road. sometimes the heaviest burden of grief is feeling that pain is all there is left of someone, and that alleviating it would be to abandon them.

scully’s right, this wound has never closed, but there’s freedom in shared remembrance and shared dedication. she doesn’t ask him to stop until he’s ready to know the truth, and she’s willing to find it. she doesn’t ask him to rest until it’s safe for him to, because it’s not forgetting samantha. she knows and she remembers.

Today when walking home through the still shiny from rain and quiet night city, I have encountered three party trams. They were absurdly overpacked with people, who sung and danced to a very loud music, while strobe lights shone through the windows. When passing the third tram, it stopped at the red light, and while the machine itself wasnt moving forward, it still bounced slightly to the rhytm and I could hear the squeaking of metal on metal. Suddenly a big cloud of smoke wafted out of the accordion like midsection and for a second I thought, that something broke in the mechanisms and caught fire, but it was just all the weed smoke finally finding a way out. Even after the tram was gone, the weed smell and smoke lingered a while.

Hey!! Yes he does know! The finding out comes around chapter 3 of the original PBATMB fic — Anakin has left after sleeping with him even though obi-wan practically staked his claim on him that night, and obi-wan demands that Rex and Cody find out everything they can on his pretty bird in flight….they dig up Vader (after all, anakin was still fighting in rings under the name Vader so it’s not the hardest of struggles to find)

Knowing Anakin was Vader and Vader is still Anakin makes him all the more fascinating to Obi-Wan, and it definitely guides his actions and how he chooses to lure Anakin back to him and keep him by his side. He knows about his past and seems to make the leap that Anakin is trying to forget about it all and separate himself from “Vader” — and that’s why he sends his hitman after him. Because anakin will have to kill him and he assumes (and is correct) that that would be the first kill Anakin makes since running from Palpatine, and he wants to prove to Anakin that there is no Vader. It’s just Anakin and all the monstrous things that Anakin is capable of.

That’s also why in Vowbreaker when Anakin goes off the rails but also importantly decides to live until he catches and kills his stalker, he has to find the one part of himself Obi-Wan said didn’t exist, the part of him he hid behind for years before Obi-Wan came around and convinced him that part never existed. Obi-Wan never really interacted with Anakin’s idea of Vader because Obi-Wan spent all their time together coaxing Anakin into realizing/believing that it was him all along, just under a different name. He didn’t have time for Anakin’s make-believe, and that’s part of the reason Anakin is able to survive post Obi-Wan’s fake death. He can once more retreat behind Vader.

BUT ultimately this actually just proves obi-wan right about there being no Vader because in Vader’s narration, he keeps slipping up and showing care or grief that is purely Anakin’s, and there are even lines in the last chapter posted and the one in my drafts where Vader calls himself Anakin by mistake

Ok this might be a me thing but… putting this out into the world in case anyone else needs it.

What I’ve learned is sometimes my brain needs to exorcise a thought. If I keep having a thought over and over, it just NEEDS to be had and there’s no use in trying to suppress it because it WILL NOT be suppressed. What does work, however, is expressing a different but similar thought that is more productive.

For instance; “I hate myself.” Bad thought to have over and over all day long. But I need to hate something. For some reason. Replacement? “I hate raisins.” Better thought to have over and over all day long.

“I love (person I shouldn’t be feeling this way about).” Bad thought to repeat. Better thought to repeat: “I love dogs.” I do! They’re so cute.

Sometimes my brain needs to repeat an idea but that idea doesn’t need to be harmful to me, you know?

Yes, being uneducated as a child is my headcanon. It makes perfect sense to me since so many people of Ed's background at the time were. I also agree that he likely can read a little bit, though not well, but don't think he can write properly at all.

Learning to read and write in childhood was reserved for the higher classes at the time, unless you were very lucky to know someone who could and who cared enough to teach you. Ed's mother might've taught him if she herself could, but his father would absolutely not care enough to get him any sort of education. If he himself could even read and write, and it is just as probable he couldn't either.

If you know of Harpo Marx, who was a very famous actor and comedian of the 1920s and 1930s, and his upbringing then you'll see what I see for Ed. Harpo didn't learn to read properly until later in life and never learned to write properly. Well into his 50s would write things like "sizzers" and "wadder" instead of scissors and water. He couldn't even write his own name for most of his life. Harpo was also a certifiable genius and highly skilled in music to the point that he taught himself to play the harp when he was still in his teens.

That is what I see for Ed. Uneducated in reading and writing but highly skilled at other things. You do not need to be able to read properly to do maths. Just ask anyone with dyslexia and yet no issues working with numbers. You just need to be able to recognize the figures and how they work together in a given situation, which Ed has shown he's very good at. That alone should be proof enough he's very far from stupid, even if he is uneducated. Being uneducated does not make anyone stupid.

Okay. You're allowed to have that headcanon. I agree that being illiterate doesn't make someone stupid. And if the headcanon existed in isolation, it wouldn't be a problem.

But it doesn't. It's just one aspect in an interpretation of Ed that makes him out to be uncultured, uneducated, unfamiliar with basic things, and dependent on white people. I'm not saying this is how you see him. But this uncharitable (and wrong) (and racist) interpretation of Ed exists, and it's part of a pattern behaviour common across many fandoms, where characters of colour get sidelined, or misinterpreted to fit racist stereotypes. And details like this are never just details.

For example, the headcanon that Ed is illiterate often goes hand in hand with "Izzy has to do the reading/writing for him". Which fits into the larger pattern of "Ed needs Izzy to take care of/manage him".

Or the "Ed eats soap" joke: Part of a larger pattern of "Stede has to teach Ed about things like proper hygiene and skin care". Again this fits into "Ed needs a white man's help for basic life skills".

I'm not saying that this pattern is always (or even often) intentional. Growing up in a racist society, we all have racist assumptions in us that we need to unpack. This is why I said I would like people who just assume he's illiterate to look at that assumption and think about why they have it. Because assumptions can often be warped by biases we maybe aren't even consciously aware of.

Now I am not saying that you personally see Ed (or other characters of colour) like this, or that you're a bad person for having that headcanon. But I hope you can understand why it's such a hot button issue, especially when it's brought up in the way it was in that post.
