By Melinda Butterfield
It seems almost impossible that the anti-trans panic that started a few years ago could grow so swiftly into a campaign of legal and extra-legal eradication. But with zero resistance from Democrats in the White House and Congress – and with the cooperation of more than a few – the fascist measures have advanced unimpeded.
The Coalition to Protect Trans Lives will hold an initial organizing call for 2024 on Wednesday, Feb. 7.  Readers who want to participate are urged to contact [email protected] or fill out the interest form at ProtectTransKidsMarch.org for details.

How to tell how threatening a bill is
Ya go to Congress dot gov. Ya type in the name of the Bill. It comes out like this:
Tumblr media
Ya look at the "tracker" section and "latest action" sections. Then ya scroll down a little to the text of the bill, and right at the top will be the list of Senators who are currently co-sponsors.
Tumblr media
Count the names. In this example, it's 13. Out of 100.
That's all the facts-only stuff I'm teaching in this post. For personal conjecture: you can look at things like ""not only Republicans introduce threatening, racist, shitty ideas" and "oh these are mostly Senators in one party whose constituents often accuse them of being too moderate; probably this bill was created with the expectation that it would immediately die, but the press reporting on it would make it seem like we were taking a decisive, not-moderate action."
A fun way to not let politicians get away with this misleading PR bullshit is to use the steps mentioned above to make sure a thing that seems important or powerful actually is! Introducing a bill is nothing, most bills die, even the famous, decades old School House Rock song says so:
youtube
Assholes want you to be afraid and miserable; being afraid and miserable preemptively "just in case" because things "might" get worse is not the same thing as being better safe than sorry, it is not preparing or bracing you, it is not motivating you, it is harmful to you, and you deserve not to be harmed. You are good.

My heart hurts for all trans people and drag performers of USA...I fear Tennessee will be just the first state
Republicans are loudly declaring war on the LGBTQ+ community...
I don't know why but I feel like it’s going to happen a Stonewall 2.0

dispatches from Republican America, Jan 24 2024
Texas:
“Texas saw an estimated 26,313 rape-related pregnancies during the 16 months after the state outlawed all abortions, with no exceptions for survivors of rape or incest, according to a study published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association,”
“The authors noted that while some pregnant rape survivors who need abortion care may be able to travel out of state or manage the pregnancy at home with abortion pills, the bans leave many survivors without a viable alternative.”
Oklahoma:
On Tuesday, Oklahoma's superintendent of public instruction, Ryan Walters, announced he was appointing right-wing social media influencer Chaya Raichik — best known for her controversial Libs of TikTok social media accounts — to an advisory role on the state's Library Media Advisory Committee. That will allow her to help determine which books are appropriate for Oklahoma school libraries.
Raichik's social media accounts are known for targeting liberals, LGBTQ people and teachers. Often, she uses incendiary claims and conspiracy theories to suggest without evidence that members of these groups engage in the indoctrination or sexual exploitation of children. And both Raichik and Walters have been accused of stoking bomb threats toward people and places featured in Raichik's videos: Walters has faced calls to resign over claims that he helped incite bomb threats toward a librarian when he reshared an edited Libs of TikTok video. That video also led to bomb threats against his home; Walters called such threats "reprehensible and unacceptable," according to KOCO News, and said they were being investigated. Raichik, meanwhile, has been accused of inciting threats against hospitals and schools.
Ohio:
Ohio has banned gender-affirming care for minors and restricted transgender women’s and girls’ participation on sports teams, a move that has families of transgender children scrambling over how best to care for them.
The Republican-dominated Senate voted Wednesday to override GOP Gov. Mike DeWine’s veto. The new law bans gender-affirming surgeries and hormone therapies, and restricts mental health care for transgender individuals under 18. The measure also bans transgender girls and women from girls and women’s sports teams at both the K-12 and collegiate level.
Officials expect the law to take effect in roughly 90 days.
Texas (again):
Texas is apparently taking advantage of a loophole in a recent Supreme Court ruling involving the US-Mexico border in order to keep putting up more razor-wire fencing along the Rio Grande riverbank.
The Supreme Court's 5-4 Monday ruling delivered a huge win to the Biden administration in its ongoing legal battle with Texas over the southern border by allowing federal border agents to cut or move barbed wire fencing the Republican-controlled state installed at the border.
The ruling does not call for Texas to take any action in the matter — and the state's Republican governor, Greg Abbott, suggested in a post to X on Wednesday that Texas will keep putting up the fencing, even if federal border agents take it down.
"Texas' razor wire is an effective deterrent against the illegal border crossings encouraged by [President Joe] Biden's open border policies," Abbott said. "We continue to deploy this razor wire to repel illegal immigration."

Florida's genocidal legislation against transgender people: a basic guide on what's happening
Preface
Queer people in Florida -- ESPECIALLY trans people of all ages -- are in trouble and it's largely going unreported. State senators and representatives openly called the trans community demons, imps, predators, and called for the erasure of the LGBTQ community this legislative session. Media outlets are largely not reporting on this/mainly focusing on pride events being canceled, and while that’s obviously terrible, that’s a tiny fraction of the problem.
I wrote this to help spread the word because my friends, family, community, and I are being affected. They are trying to kill us and all I can do is keep screaming and hope that someone hears me.
Please note, this focuses on Florida's anti-LGBTQ laws. Bills targeting immigrants, BIPOC folks, education, how history can be taught in schools, and more were passed this session as well. The NAACP, the League of United Latin American Citizens, Equality Florida, and the Florida Immigrant Coalition have all released travel advisories warning Black, Hispanic, queer people, and immigrants from traveling to the state. I reference some of these laws in this post but don't go in depth on most of them; I'll put some sources at the bottom if you'd like to do further reading.
As of May 22, 2023, here is what's happening in Florida:
Health care
SB 254 (gender affirming care ban)
Gender affirming health care has been dramatically limited/essentially banned for transgender people of ALL ages. This law, SB 254, went into effect immediately upon signing (May 17, 2023).
Youth care was already banned by ruling of the Board of Medicine in February; SB 254 puts it into law. Trans kids who were receiving care prior to the ban have been grandfathered in and can continue their care; no new minors can receive care (puberty blockers, HRT, surgery, etc.).
Physicians and health care workers could be charged with a first-degree misdemeanor for providing gender-affirming care to children not grandfathered in.
Adults who were on HRT/are looking to be put on HRT must get their prescription in person from an MD or DO. (About 80% of trans people in FL were getting care from nurse practitioners/telehealth.)
Adults also must sign an informed consent document created by the Florida Board of Medicine before they can receive care. That document does not yet exist. Some providers are theorizing it may never exist. Another concern is that it could be used to create a state registry of trans people.
As of now, places like Planned Parenthood have had to pause gender affirming care because there is no informed consent document. Pharmacies are (inconsistently) declining refill requests for HRT.
SB 1580 (right to discriminate)
While this bill does not directly reference trans people (that I know of), the “Protections of Medical Conscience Act” — which is colloquially being referred to as the “Let Them Die Act” — allows health care providers or payors to deny service on the basis of “a conscience-based objection.” This includes any ethical, moral, or religious beliefs, and the bill provides no definition for what constitutes a moral or ethical belief.
This bill puts trans, queer, BIPOC, disabled, and otherwise marginalized people at risk of being medically neglected or otherwise discriminated against without repercussions.
Access to public life
HB 1521 (bathrooms)
With the signing of HB 1521, as of July 1, 2023, trans people will be required to use the bathroom that correlates with their sex assigned at birth in certain public areas. These include buildings owned/leased by governmental entities, schools, universities, private colleges, hospitals owned by universities, some sports arenas, convention centers, city parks, beaches, airports, and more.
If a trans person is in a bathroom with a cis person and the cis person complains, an employee can tell the trans person to leave. Refusing to do so would bring a trespassing charge against the trans person. This can carry a sentence of up to a year in jail.
Gender markers/updated birth certificates will not protect trans people from this law. The law says that sex is determined as “indicated by the person’s sex chromosomes, naturally occurring sex hormones, and internal and external genitalia present at birth.”
SB 1438 (drag ban)
This law went into effect immediately upon being signed. It's written vaguely but bans kids and teens from attending certain performances in private venues, such as drag shows (including family-friendly ones).
Additionally, it bans cities, counties and other governments from issuing permits for events that feature drag performers. If this aspect of the law is violated, the organizer of the event would face a first-degree misdemeanor.
The law defines "adult live performances" -- which minors cannot attend -- as a show, exhibition or other presentation that "depicts or simulates nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement, (or) specific sexual activities," which include exposing breasts or genitals, "lewd conduct, or the lewd exposure of prosthetic or imitation genitals or breasts" when it's offensive to "prevailing standards" and is "without serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value for the age of the child present."
As a slight side note -- it was during a discussion for this bill's companion House bill that Florida Rep. Randy Fine, a Jewish man who also helped pass a bill against anti-Semitism, characterized queer people as predators and called for the erasure of the LGBTQ community: "If it means erasing a community because you have to target children, then damn right we oughta do it. I just don’t think you have to inherently say 'cause you’re lesbian or gay you have to target children.' I find that statement to be offensive to them."
As of May 22, Treasure Coast Pride, Tampa Pride, and St. Cloud Pride canceled their events/parts of their events as a precaution because of this bill.
Education and families
SB 254 (cont.)
SB 254 allows the state to remove a child from a parent if the child is receiving gender affirming care/if the child is “at risk” of receiving care, or if the parent is trans/suspected of being trans. PLEASE NOTE I am not a parent and I am a little less familiar with this aspect of the law. I believe this only applies in custody cases. Tiktok user @/frogexecutive has been posting a lot about this because they just fled Florida; their page has more info.
HB 1069 (education)
House Bill 1069 expanded the “Don’t Say Gay” bill through 8th grade. It also bans schools from using students’ or teachers’ preferred names or pronouns. It goes into effect on July 1, 2023. Separately, the Board of Education voted to ban the teaching of anything related to gender/sexuality through 12th grade, but that wasn't signed into law. I'm not sure if/how that will be enforced.
*Note: SB 266, Florida's STOP Woke Act, and other bills prohibit public colleges/universities from using funds for diversity and equity programs, impact what can/can't be taught in classrooms, and limit teachings on queerness, race, history, etc. I'm not going in-depth on these bills but if you're interested in education in Florida, those two laws especially are ones to look into.
Further reading
I pulled much of my information from some of these sites (as well as the actual text of the laws). I'm also listing sites with more information on the other laws put in place this session. Please reblog with more sources for info, resources for queer people, etc!

Again, please reblog with more resources, and please feel free to add additional information or correct any errors. And please, please share this. We are fighting for our lives here in Florida.
One final note: Please do not comment telling people to move or making jokes about abandoning Florida/cutting it off/hoping it sinks into the sea. It is full of people who cannot leave. Your glee at the idea of abandoning Florida just hurts those of us who voted against this fascist monster and ended up having to live under his thumb anyway.

I just tried it out and here's my feedback:
For President Biden, I might vote to reelect him because he took steps to repeal discriminatory policies like the Trans Ban (DADT 2.0). While I appreciate this progress, I hope to see a more critical approach to U.S. support and funding for Israel. Even still, Trump would be worse for Palestine. Vote Blue No Matter Who, until we get Ranked Choice Voting.
For Senator Murkowski, I approve of her reelection because I appreciate Senator Murkowski's dedication to child development and her progressive stance on LGBTQ+ rights. However, I wish she would support stronger gun regulation and prioritize green initiatives more consistently. I'm encouraged by her stance against Trump's policies.
For Senator Sullivan, I strongly oppose Senator Sullivan due to his positions against reproductive rights, transgender rights, and affordable healthcare. Additionally, his denial of climate change, support for gerrymandering, and alignment with extremist views surrounding the January 6 insurrection are deeply concerning. He is an un-American Trump Sucker and I need him out of my chair this instant.
For Rep. Peltola, I approve of her because I appreciate Senator Peltola's support for COVID-19 proposals and her progressive stance on marriage, children, LGBTQ+, and transgender rights. However, I believe there is room for improvement in her support for military service members, veterans, and moderate gun regulation.

Kansas City is protecting trans rights even though Missouri is banning those rights. Even if Missouri stops Kansas City from protecting trans people it shows that the community cares about the trans people in it. It shows us that we can fight back against these bans on gender-affirming care, sports, bathrooms, etc. We can fight back as a community just like Kansas City. Other cities should follow Kansas Cities lead. Cities should make it known that they care about the whole community and not just the cisgender people in it. Cities in states that have not banned trans health care should make sure that they are prepared to fight back against state laws that would ban trans healthcare if or when they happen. Cities in states that have already banned trans healthcare amongst other things make sure trans people know your community does not care about people being trans and wants people to be able get the healthcare they need and deserve to be able to get. Cities should fight back against laws that take away trans rights.
We will not comply with these bans against our existence. We will fight back against these bans against our rights. Thank you Kansas City for giving me hope that we can fight back. https://www.kcur.org/news/2023-05-11/kansas-city-transgender-safe-haven-gender-affirming-care-missouri-laws

I'm seeing a lot of doomer posts about the Missouri trans rule thing and like, I won't downplay it is bad, and it is a gross disgusting invasion of people's rights and an attack on everyone's right to make basic choices around their own health care.
HOWEVER, I'm seeing a huge number of posts acting like it's a done deal, like it IS going to happen.
I'm not a lawyer to be clear however every legal expert I've heard on this says these "emergency rules" are legal trash. As in not only are they bad on a moral/human level, but legally the logic is trash.
I know the ACLU and Lambda Legal are suing over this.
I think the most likely outcome is that these rules will have an emergency injunction blocking their enforcement put in place before they take effect to allow the case to be fought out in court.
The AG of Missouri went way out on a limb on this and legally I don't think he'll win.
yes this is scary, yes this is upsetting, yes this is enraging.
However HRT remains legal and available in Missouri and likely will stay that way, no one, right now, is being forced to detransition. I'm saying that not to downplay or discredit feelings of panic from anyone but I'm scared that if we make the bad situation sound any worse we'll be responsible for people killing themselves.
If there isn't an emergency injunction this week I'd be shocked, and if it doesn't happen I'll delete this and apologize for my optimism.
any ways give a dollar to the ACLU of Missouri or Lambda Legal
