A book recommendation for Felice in Young Royals, that will make her feel seen and understood, is Young Adult novel, Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-íyímídé.

This Get Out meets Gossip Girl inspired thriller, is perfect for lovers of Dark Academia.

Set in an elite all white high school, where the only two Black kids, Devon and Chiamaka, start to feel that all is not right in their last year of school. Their dreams for their future, and their lives, are at risk from a mysterious entity called Aces.

Chiamaka is also the popular girl in her school and is mixed-race like Felice. This book was published the month before Young Royals season one came out, so I would totally recommend d it to be on Felice's tbr. It's also featured in Heartstopper Season one episode one - Isaac is reading it at Charlie's sleepover party.

The author Faridah, who is Black-British, queer and Muslim, was writing Ace of Spades during her first year at a Scottish university, aged 19. The book was part inspired by her experiences there.

About the teenage friendships in Ace of Spades, Faridah has said:

"Something that gets left out of t.v. shows and books often is how much friendship means a lot to teenagers. I think friendship breakups are more common and more hurtful than romantic ones when you're growing up, because those are your main relationships. I really wanted to highlight how toxic friendships and unhealthy relationships can look like. As well as ones that are good but flawed. I think it's really important to show teenagers that. When I was younger there were so many friendships I had that were definitely toxic but I had no words to articulate why they were because I guess everybody's desperate for friendship and nobody wants to be alone."

Still a fun reread though.

#dreamweavers #aroaessidhe 2023 reads #isa pearl ritchie #into the labyrinth #ok this is definitely on the younger side of MG - or probably just nz mg & ya is overall younger compared to US/UK #it is fun there's some cool ideas! #it does make me nostalgic for certain nz ya/mg fantasies too #the true aroace and also 14yo fear of your friends not liking you as much as each other #or getting bored with you when they get crushes #there's a reasonable subplot about that in book 1&2 which sort of ends on her friends being like. We Will Not Do That also we're not+ #planning on dating or crushes any time soon anyway #and the MC eventually mentions she googled and saw something called the ace spectrum but she doesn't know anyone irl like that #and her friend is like sounds legit also we love you the way you are no matter what - and then it doesn't really come up after that #(which makes sense for 12yos though I think it could have been more narratively concluded) #a bit that made me laugh was when a magic person is talking about bad things that happen in the waking world and she's like: #what; like.........atrocities? #you know. The Atrocities. just in general. sdhjgjhfd #the third one tried to bring in some bigger ideas and I think got a bit lost….. #it almost felt like the core of the characters/narrative was put aside to make the focus We Have To Make Kids Care About Climate Change ! #also ends quite abruptly? #and there were a few things that felt Too silly and took me out of the story. maybe 12yos would find it funny idk #anyway I think overall: not bad! but probably one of those middle grades that is more just for kids not also enjoyable for an adult audienc #(which is fine of course!) #asexual books #nz author

All of Us Villians Duology - Amanda Foody and C.L. Herman

I've said before and I'll say it again; bring back fantasy duologies!! All of Us Villians and All of Our Demise were such fun reads. For being young adult books, they were well stocked of morally gray characters, violence, and betrayal. I loved this series and each of the characters, with a competition resembling that of the Hunger Games, the addition of magic, and 7 power-hungry families, this was an intriguing set up. Every champion entered this competition with expectations set on their shoulders and every one defied them. There's much to discuss so this is just going to be a ramble of my thoughts. In the first book, I really liked Isobel and Alistair's scenes, how she realizes he isn't the monster everyone thinks he is and then death-curses him anyways. Isobel was such a fascinating character; she's branded as the "pretty girl," but my god is she one of the most vicious. She literally cast a death curse as she was kissing Alistair... enough said. Not to mention in the second book she literally plots out everyone's deaths while they sleep in the rooms next door. I love her. Moving on to Alistair though, homie just needs a hug and someone to care about him. I loved how he tried to act like a monster (though sometimes he really was) but eventually everyone realizes he just traumatized and clumsy (and a loverboy at heart...). He is also one of my favorite characters and I'm glad he gets to leave everything (his grief, trauma, horrible family name and legacy) behind at the end of book 2. Not to mention his relationship with Gavin- genuinely one of the best slow burn, enemies-to-lovers storylines I have ever seen. Their relationship was so cleverly thought out and I'm glad that after they fight through many death experiences to end the tournament, that they can be happy together. Honorable mentions to Finley, Briony, and Reid, whom I didn't love but enjoyed their POVs anyways. I feel like of any of the MCs to die, Briony made the most sense and I wasn't even surprised as I read the chapter. She always wanted to be the hero, so she got the martyr role in the end. I know there's more I'm leaving out, but in the interest of this being relatively short, I'll just say this; you will not regret picking up this series!
