Alberta will require post-secondary universities in the province to annually report to government their efforts to "protect free speech" on campus.
Alberta Advanced Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said in a statement Friday the province will also continue to explore possible additional steps.
"It is abundantly clear that more needs to be done to ensure our institutions are adequately protecting free speech," Nicolaides wrote.
"Alberta's post-secondary institutions should be bastions of free speech and academic freedom that promote critical thinking."
The new steps were promised by the minister earlier this week. He was responding to reaction to a planned lecture on the University of Lethbridge campus by controversial academic Frances Widdowson.
Widdowson, who made headlines in 2020 for comments she made suggesting there had been an educational benefit to residential schools, had been asked to the campus by a faculty member. But that plan had been met by significant resistance by faculty and staff, with two petitions receiving more than 2,500 signatures. [...]
In an interview, Nicolaides said the report cards will be made public annually. The government does not have a final timeline at this point, though it hopes to wrap up the process by the end of the year.
Nicolaides said he plans to sit down with universities and colleges to determine what the reports should look like, adding he did not want to create a mechanism that adds more red tape to an institution. He said it would be likely that the report cards would fall under the free speech policies already in place at various institutions.
"The University of Calgary and the University of Lethbridge have similar language where they say that the university should not shield individuals from speech and speech events or activities," Nicolaides said. "That's something that we can pull out and look at in the context of the report card." [...]

Female Gamers’ Perceptions of their Mental Health influenced by the Online Gaming Space (18+)
Hello Everyone,
My name is Andrea. I am conducting research as a part of my Master’s thesis at the University of Lethbridge. I seek to explore female gamers’ experiences as they are interacting with other players and playing multiplayer online games.
I am seeking individuals who identify as female who also play online multiplayer games.
The survey takes approximately 15-20 minutes. I would like to capture thoughts and perspectives on the player interactions that female gamers may be experiencing in game. Your responses to the questions in the Qualtrics survey will be kept confidential. There are no personal identifier questions.
There is no compensation for participating in this study. However, your participation will lead to valuable research information that can help inform and shape the online community. If you are willing to participate please click on the link. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Fourteen follows Donna to work one day, “Not to do any world-saving, just to look around! Check out the archives, see how Kate’s getting on, the like!” It lasts until about 11:00, at which point he’s become such a distraction that Kate calls Shirley and tells her that her schedule for the rest of the day has been cleared, and to “For the love of God take him down to the lab, show them the projects, goof off for all I care, just don’t cause any structural damage and get him out of my hair.”

The Council of the Great Mother is a Gallifreyan organization that specializes on the politics surrounding regeneration and some additional religious matters. (Audio: Spring)
While stuck in a dream on the verge of regeneration (while the Master was in turn trying to prevent that regeneration), the Fifth Doctor was unable to remember his wife's name or how many children he had lost over the years (he lost count after five). (Audio: Winter)
The Sixth Doctor once became the Valeyard, but this was temporary. (Novel: Millennial Rites)
On an unknown university campus, the Ninth Doctor was caught having an argument with the Seventh. (Short story: Have You Seen This Man?)

In the above situation, Benny Summerfield was Braxiatel's best man. (Audio: Braxiatel in Love)
The Fifth Doctor once said that Gallifreyans from the Prydonian Chapter could not be trusted as they were far too cunning. Nyssa then had to remind him that he was Prydonian. (Audio: Spring)
The Third Doctor's address was listed as "The TARDIS, care of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, UNIT HQ." (Novel: The Time Lord Letters)

Doctor Who Unbound : Sympathy for the Devil (2)
Now where do I start with this. I've got too many things to say but at the same time I don't feel like there's anything to add to such a piece. It's definitely one of my favourite works from Big Finish that I've listened to. Pure quality.
First of all the acting is on point. It is fairly due to the five stars casting supporting this, but it is worth mentioning. David Warner, Nicholas Courtney, David Tennant and "Sam Kisgart" all make a hell of a quatuor that rocks the dynamics between every character.
The story in itself is definitely inspired by the Third Doctor era and does really well with it. The version of the future that is told to us in this is really grim and it works perfectly. Lethbridge-Stewart's character evolution is pretty well thought through and it is also what permits him to take the decision he takes right at the end of this. The mischievous plan of the bad guy and the way all elements come together at some point is brilliant. It definitely keeps you hooked up all the way through.
The realisation, the sound effects, the music, the overall atmosphere all work really great, especially in the last part when the Ke Le Divisions are set free of their mind control. Truly chilling.
All I have to say now is I had an amazing time listening to this and you should do it as well!

I like to think that whenever the Brig is being Particularly Difficult the Doctor is just like "Alright, Brigade Leader" and the Brig doesn't entirely know the context for that but he gets the idea and also context clues

Chapter Five
Something strange has come to Earth.
--
A string of mismatched syllables broke through the Doctor’s consciousness, pulling him unceremoniously from the deep abyss of sleep. Rolling onto his back, his groggy mind worked to identify the source, slowly concluding it was the eleven-month-old sleeping between him and Missy. Or rather, the eleven-month-old who was supposed to be sleeping between him and Missy.
“Da ba da,” they very much awake Alistair babbled with purpose, “Badada.”
“That’s very interesting,” a second voice responded.
Opening his eyes, the Doctor was met with an annoyingly bright light, needing to blink a few times to adjust. Alistair sat upright in the bed, holding a mobile phone – his, the Doctor quickly realized – in his hands, the image of Nardole on the screen.
“Gaga badaba,” Alistair eagerly shook the phone as he spoke.
“Sorry, but could you please put your dad on now?” Nardole tried to coax him, “I’ve told you already it’s urgent.”
Quickly glancing to the other side of the bed, the Doctor saw Missy lying still, undisturbed by their son’s antics. With the hopes of keeping it that way, he scooped up the baby, taking the phone from his hands as he took them out to the corridor.
“What do you want?” the Doctor asked, holding the phone with his free hand.
“It’s not me, sir, it’s UNIT,” Nardole got straight to explaining, “They’re asking for you.”

EDMONTON - The Alberta government says changes are coming to further protect free speech on campuses as a former professor speaking out on so-called “woke” policies prepares for a showdown with the University of Lethbridge.
Advanced Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides says he plans to announce the changes in the coming days but did not give details.
He was responding to the case of Frances Widdowson, a former tenured professor at Calgary's Mount Royal University, who was invited then disinvited to speak on campus this week about her concerns that a mob mentality and “woke policies” increasingly threaten academic freedom.
Widdowson has previously come under fire for her comments on residential schools.
“I understand past comments made by this speaker are controversial,” Nicolaides said in a statement Tuesday.
“But I believe it is important for our universities and colleges to foster a strong culture of free speech and diverse viewpoints, even when those viewpoints are deemed controversial, or even offensive, barring speech intended to incite hatred or violence of course.” [...]
About 2,500 students signed a petition pushing back on the university for hosting the speech.
University president Mike Mahon, as late as last Thursday, defended the decision to host Widdowson, citing free speech even if the university did not agree with her views.
However, on Monday, Mahon said after further consultation the offer of space was revoked because Widdowson's views would not advance the residential schools discussion and would cause harm by minimizing the pain and suffering inflicted on First Nations children and families. [...]

Doctor Who: Inferno
I rewatched this serial on 3 February 2023. Gosh. Four stories in and we’re at the end of season seven. If watching it on first BBC transmission back in 1970, the seventh episode of this concluding serial aired around the summer solstice. Colour came with a price — fewer episodes per year.
I last rewatched Inferno fairly recently as research for my most recent Lethbridge-Stewart novel, A Most Haunted Man (Candy Jar Books, 2022). If you want to see why, you can order it here.
Anyway, the story builds up quite well. Obstinate leaders of experimental scientific establishments are rapidly becoming a stock villain for Doctor Who. The Doctor and Liz vibe well together, and how wonderful that he trusts her to work on the TARDIS console. At the end of the serial, with the Doctor being pally with the Brigadier after being rude to him, there’s a hint that these four stories are only four of many, many adventures.
In context, I am struck by how many drilling or mining facilities our heroes ended up in during the late 1960s and 1970. At least this rig isn’t at sea. I know these themes are returned to later in the series, but it’s quite a feature of these earlier stories.
And, at last, among the fairly large support cast of extras, there’s a Black man. A technician who is seen a few times throughout the crowd scenes.
UNIT are now wearing fatigues that are more like British Army dress at the time. The Brigadier sticks with his slightly futuristic uniform.
And then we arrive with the Doctor in an alternative universe. Back in 1970, the fascism of Germany, Italy and Spain were in living memory; in Spain, the fascists were still in power. Looking at this now with the resurgence of similar rightwing views in power in the UK, USA, Hungary, Poland… the ideas are the same, but the trappings less so. The serial isn’t subtle with its message that fascism gets you to disaster quicker… It’s also not subtle with the Doctor being a Cassandra character at risk of being ignored yet again about the real dangers of humans interfering with the environment. When did Doctor Who become “woke” again?
